The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024) s01e03 Episode Script

Bye

1
OKAFOR: B's get in.
A's are sent away and killed,
except you two.
[CRYING]
I found you.
RICK: Don't show them who you are.
What I am?
A leader. Hide it.
My name is Dana,
and I've been out there
a long time by myself.
She found you, but I'm keeping
that off the books.
You have to know that
if you try to escape with her,
I will make sure that all those
people that you love die.

MAN: All right, listen up,
your time is your own.
We're gonna meet back here at 5:00.
Take it in. This is gonna be
your home someday soon.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS]

Hey, can you pass me a napkin?
Hi, Rick.
I'm gonna save you.
Not a fry guy?
If you're looking for a fancier place,
there's a decent spot this way.
My people and I when I had people
we were approached by one of them.
They proposed a resource exchange,
and if we, uh, came across
lost souls who needed saving,
we would hold them
and give them to the CRM.
And if we found a threat, well,
we'd give them to the CRM, too.
In exchange, we got supplies.
I've been a regular
at this place for a month,
so that whenever
your orientation happened,
I would be here and we could talk.
The fries are good,
but onion rings that's living.
They keep asking me
what to ask you,
and I say, "I don't know".
Obviously, I was hoping
that you would say
that you're looking
for someone to follow.
You can talk to me, Rick. Here.
They don't operate in the city.
They can't, much to their annoyance.
You brought me somewhere I can't leave.
I could have chosen to let
you die on the riverbed,
or I could have told them
you were a threat.
The CRM doesn't take chances,
but I did 'cause I owed you.
Why aren't you working consignment?
It's me, right?
Me. Giving them me.
No. I believe in this place.
I'm enlisting in the CRM.
I'm signing up and I'm gonna move up.
This place has a 500-year plan
to recreate the world as it was,
better than it was.
Remaking civilization,
finally besting the dead
that seems like a perfectly fine
way to spend one's life,
and the people that we left behind
their children's children
will have a world.
I'm going home.
Follow your bliss, Rick.
But I did save your life.
That is what happened.

You're welcome.

[KNOCK ON DOOR]
You heard?
They told me. A-Are you okay?
Just listen to me.
There's a woman who saved me.
She's in designation intake right now.
She's an A and I don't want
them to send her away.
You don't know for sure.
I'm making a call,
but if I argue for her,
they'll think I'm emotional, indebted.
You gotta make sure she stays.
Why?
For Okafor.
Because that's what this
has all been about.
He's dead.
No, he's not, because we're here.
Are you here, Rick?
Are you a part of this?
I understand now.
I told him just before.
You were right.
[SIGHS]
Who brings her along?
You do, like you brought me along.
They trust you more.
He trusted you more.
Rick.
Look, it took me a long time.
You helped me.
I'm here.
She should be, too.

You're thinking about killing me.
I will.
But not today.
It's funny. I see it. I feel it.
Everything you made happen for yourself,
just throwing it away
because you needed to get
in the middle of something
you have nothing to do with.
I have everything to do with it.
Our fates are bound.
You, Michonne, me.
And for you two to be
the first people to ever leave,
we would never stop
looking for you, ever,
and I would know where you are.
So, I would have to go and kill
all of you to make sure
that no one else got there first
and our arrangement
was somehow discovered.
This was your mess.
This is you. This is you.
In the event of my untimely demise,
I just put a little file
among my possessions,
telling them everything
they need to know about you
and all the people that you love,
and I imagine that a CRM
reclamation team
would have everybody that you love dead
within hours of that file's receipt,
because you and her
leaving with the knowledge
of that city and this force?
You know that can't be had.
She doesn't belong here.
Then she shouldn't have come here.
But that was her choice.
So, what's your choice?
Will you tell me that you
will not try to leave again?
If you try with her,
everyone back home dies.
Why? Why?
Security and secrecy above all.
- Oh.
- And I will not jeopardize
"everything I've made
happen for myself".
I won't wait for them to find
you and they will find you
and it'll all blow back on me.
Is Is there a deal to be made?
- You clean it up?
- No.
I'm a believer, Rick.
She's very, very lucky.
They suspect that she's an A,
but they still let her in.
Thorne stepped up.
Did you do that?
Wow.
You pulled that off.
So, have your life together here.
We're the last light of the world.
What's your choice?
You know, I don't need to hear it.
You didn't threaten me or the people
I love before when I told you
I was gonna get away.
That's 'cause I knew you couldn't.
What changed?
You two together?
You can do anything.

[DOOR OPENS, CLOSES]

[BANGING]
WOMAN OVER PA: Every assignment
brings you one step closer
to enjoying the benefits of becoming
a citizen of the Civic Republic.

MICHONNE: Shoto, it's Daito.
I found him.
I found the brave man.
He's in a place I didn't expect.
A world I didn't imagine.
I know you have questions.
I wish I could answer them.
But there is no much I don't know yet,
about the people here,
and how they were able to keep someone
as strong as the brave man for so long.
[WALKERS SNARLING]
He's been trying to come
home all this time.

They've stopped him, again and again.

But Shoto
they can't stop us.
WOMAN OVER PA: Good work out there.
We're two hours to transport
to Richmond Power Station.
You cut through them quick.
You out there a while?
Yeah. Were you?
Yep. Cleo. Cleo Clifton.
Uh, Dana Bethune.
Just taking it all in.
Yeah, it's a lot to take in.
The doorstep of paradise.
You think it's paradise for everyone?
I'm pretty sure it is.
Before this, I was eating
crickets and sleeping in a tree.
[DISTANT EXPLOSIONS]
Oh. Disruption charges.
They drop them to scatter the stiffs
if too many build up in one area.
Second time this week.
So, what are you? Three day or six day?
They size you up and give you either
a three-day training or a six-day,
depending on how much steel
they think you got.
Why don't you guess and tell me later?
Three. I'm just happy to be
with someone knew who knows their shit.
You don't know if I know my shit.
Ah, I got a good idea.
You radiate shit-knowing.
[GRUNTS]
Damn it! Ugh!
[SNARLING]
MAN: Heads up, we got nonkills.
Nonkills.
Consignees, clear!

Cleo, down!

Good work. Good work.
Yeah. You know your shit.
WOMAN ON PA: Consignees, clear
orange for station assessment.
Consignees Bethune and Clifton,
return to transport for health
check and incident report.
MAN: All right, consignees,
let's get 'em clear.

BEALE: Major Donald Okafor had a wife.
And that night, he could've made
sure he'd see her again
if he had stayed on mission.
But he dropped those bombs,
ending everything he was,
everything he had.
He showed us that our enemies
can be our salvation
if we look at them differently.
Some of you know what
this sword means to me.
It was, among other
military antiquities,
being evacuated from the Museum
of the American Revolution.
Or stolen. We don't know.
But the truck was caught
in some of the bombings
by our former illustrious Air Force,
and I found it
at the Battle of Fitler Square,
and it saved my life.
It was Revolutionary War
General Hugh Mercer's sword.
Mercer had different lives.
He fought on different sides
in different wars,
landed on the right side in
the fight against the British,
and he died in that fight.
I believe you can draw a straight line
between his sacrifice and
Donald Okafor's sacrifice.

I was laying on my capsized sloop
when this cruise ship drifted by.
Ghost ship.
Climbed on board, but they had nothing.
No food, no water. Just cigarettes.
I was smoking in the sun
when this helicopter found me.
They lowered Okafor down from the sky,
but I thought he was a mirage.
He talked to me, took my measure.
I realized, right there and then,
he decided that I was an A.
He gave me a choice.
He said I could either come
with him to save the world,
or he would have to kill me.
I told him not to bother,
that if he left me there,
I'd be dead in a few days.
He said, "I do not agree
with that assessment".
[CHUCKLES]
After I tried to to kill him,
he had his gun in my face,
his own blood dripping off the barrel,
and he still didn't shoot me.
I thought, "Who is this stupid
man with the helicopter?
Who is he not to pull the trigger?"
That was you back then, not now.
Was it?
I mean, the man who changed
everything for me is dead.

Maybe I was
[SIGHS] Maybe I was
right the first time.
[CAR DOOR OPENS]
Major General, sir.
Sergeant Majors, both
of you meant a lot to him.
He saw a lot of potential.
- Thank you, sir.
- Don't thank me yet.
I warned him you two weren't
gonna be worth the trouble,
but he made a mission to prove me wrong.
My perspective is still changing.
I keep thinking "pharmakon",
an Ancient Greek word
meaning both "poison" and "the cure".
I think about that when
your name comes up, Grimes.
The thing is, I'm not sure about you.
I'm just not sure.
"Martial Arts: The Book
of Family Traditions"
by Yagyu Munenori.
I gave it to Okafor, too.
Wasn't sure about him, either.
But with him, the sky
was the limit, yes?
Thorne, I need to speak
with you privately.
Let's take a ride.
Yes, sir.
[CAR DOOR OPENS]

[ENGINE TURNS OVER]

[KNOCK ON DOOR]
I'm Command Sergeant Major Thorne now.
Beale promoted me.
Thank you.
[DOOR CLOSES]
He told me everything,
gave me the full briefing.
The Echelon Briefing.
I thought it would be years before I
I'm going to need you
to take over logistics
at Cascadia Forward Operating Base.
They're accelerating the schedule
and there's a lot that needs to be done
before the commanders arrive
for the opening summit.
Beale said that they're
all going to be there.
Every senior officer,
every decision maker.
The entire Frontliner force.
He also asked me about
Consignee Bethune.
More than 17,000 in this force
and, um, she's on his radar.
I just want you to know
she reflects on me now.
Well, you told them it was for Okafor.
I did, and it was.
It was for you, too.
It's happening.
I'm moving up, and I can't
have her pull me down.
I just need you to know that.
She won't. I'll make sure.
You will.

Thank you for listening, Rick.
And for this.

What? No salute?

You didn't hear what I heard.
You didn't see what I saw.
You will.
Good night, Sergeant Major.
Good night, Command Sergeant Major,

[DISTANT EXPLOSIONS]

[HELICOPTER BLADES WHIRRING]

RICK: This is it, tonight.
We gotta move fast.
The disruption charges
brought out more of the dead.
Tonight's will bring even more.
[WALKERS SNARLING DISTANTLY]

[SNARLING CONTINUES]

After post-task health check,
go to Consignee Fitness,
locker 678.
The key will get you out
of the building,
under the base, and away.
Follow the map.
There's a red canoe in the brush.
I love you.
And I left you a little something.
[SNARLS]

[WALKERS SNARLING]

[CLANGING, WALKERS SNARLING]

[EXPLOSION]

[EXPLOSION]

[WALKERS SNARLING]

[GURGLING, SNARLING]

[EXPLOSION]
[SNARLING, CLANGING]

Rick?
Rick?
[SIGHS]

[WALKERS SNARLING DISTANTLY]

RICK: I'm not coming.
And if you don't go,
you'll never get away
and we both die here.
The only way to get you back to Judith
is that I stay here to make sure.
I love you forever.
If you love me
you'll go.

[EXHALES SHARPLY]
[HELICOPTER BLADES WHIRRING]
State your business, soldier.
She's gone, and you're helping
me make her stay gone.
How is she gone?
I made it look like she died trying.
I know I needed to stay
to get her away, so I'm here.
She actually left without you?
I don't believe that, Rick.
She didn't know she was
leaving without me.
You still want to kill me, Rick?
You still see that?
Maybe I was just dreaming.
I can't kill you. People are a resource.
You're part of this now.
"Our fates are bound".
- How's that?
- I found a body.
It was close enough after I
put it in a consignment uniform
and tore it apart, tore
its face and scalp off.
Story is she fell, hit her head
on the rocks, walkers got her.
You just make sure you're
on the investigation
as soon as they find out she's missing.
Body's on the shoreline,
southeast of Pier 70.
I was just heading out
for the first security audit
at your Cascadia Base.
I will be gone, thank God.
I'll make sure I'm on point when Dana
goes gone and I will get to work.
But any shit that rains down,
it wasn't my doing.
And if you do want to make
your dream come true,
kill me while we're nose to nose.
I already left them all the answers
you don't want them to have.

You say you did it for her.
I'm sure that that is true,
but I wonder if there isn't
something else
that's keeping you here.
Again, I-I did save your life.
Well, now you get to save hers.
You're a hero
with a shit haircut.

[BUZZING]
As you were.
You're in real trouble now,
Sergeant Major.
MAN: [SHOUTING ORDERS INDISTINCTLY]
Let's move!
[ALL GRUNTING]

[WALKERS SNARLING]
[GRUNTING LOUDLY]

- Way to go.
- Oh, my God!

- Wow.
- [CHUCKLING]
[MURMURING]
[PANTING]
THORNE: During intake, she said
that she was looking
for safety in numbers.
It helped me make my case.
Thing is, she doesn't look like someone
who relies on others for safety.

RICK: Keep walking.
Ahead and to the left. We can talk.
All these years, the only way
I wasn't killed
was one man saving
my life over and over.
The only way you get away is
if someone is here making sure.
It's taken me years to know
I can't go anymore.
I asked for help, I didn't get it.
To get away, you need someone
on the inside.
I'm that for you.
I said that if you loved me
you'd go.

MICHONNE: Shoto, it's Daito.
Someone told me I had
to know when to go.

I had a chance to go home,
but I couldn't do it
without the brave man.
Maybe I should have.

Just when I wondered if he
could have been drawn in
by the ambition and
the hope of this place,
that it could've replaced us,
I found something.

You're the one who drew me.
Yes.
Always you and the girl.
He would come every few months
and ask for a new one.
There was a boy he asked me to draw,
but I could never get it right for him.
Carl.
His name was Carl.
You're more open.
Took three years before he'd say names.
You're Michonne and the girl is Judith.
Is she here?
- Sorry.
- She's okay.
He said he wanted the drawings
for until he saw you again.
Here you are.
He knew he'd see you. He knew it.
He stopped talking like that.
- I told him
- I know what you told him.
Thank you.
It helped me.
He found you.
Now I'm looking for him.

Believe a little bit longer.

[WALKERS SNARLING]
Bethune.
I'm Command Sergeant Major Thorne.
You know Sergeant
Major Grimes, obviously.
I do.
Did you enjoy orientation,
your first trip to the city?
Yeah.
I saw some interesting artwork.
Hmm.
Not so enthusiastic, eh?
Is that life not for you?
Do I have a choice?
Come with us.
[CAR DOOR OPENS]
[CAR DOOR CLOSES]
What is this place?
It's what the city would have
become if it wasn't for one man.
It was bombed?
Yeah.
Now, I don't know much about you.
You emerged from the woods
and saved someone very important.
Sergeant Major Grimes
saved my life once.
I would call him a friend,
but friendship
seems like something
that doesn't exist out here.
It's too light. Too soft.
He's my family now.
My only family.
So, my question is
who are you?
Just Dana.
This is not the moment
for humility, Dana.
I'm a survivor.
A survivor wouldn't have
run out of the woods
to save a man who was about
to have his throat cut.
Well, I did.
And I survived.
Why did you save him?
I was looking for people.
It's safer with people.
Why did you save him?
- It didn't seem
- Didn't seem what?
It didn't seem right.
He was on the ground, helpless.
[LAUGHS] Him?
I can't imagine him ever being helpless.
Well, I don't know him.
But he was about to die,
if I wasn't there.
I don't want to see anyone get killed,
especially anyone that seems helpless.
[EXHALES SHARPLY]
I'm letting you in on a secret.
You are here because of me.
People like you, they're not let in.
You're a leader, what we call an "A".
If you are allowed to live in the city,
you won't work, farm, shop, read.
No. You'll look for answers.
You'll ask what happened here
and why and to whom,
and you'll seek justice
based on a feeling in your gut,
a feeling you can't name.
But what if I told you that
there is only one way
to get those answers, those secrets,
only one way to understand
the whole picture?
Would you take it?
You would give me the answers?
A chance very few get, very few
in the entirety of this force,
very few in the world.
I would say

yes.

Sergeant Major,
this consignee will be joining us
for clearing operations
at Cascadia Base.
Ensure she's properly equipped.
- Provisional BDU.
- Weapons?
Killstick only.
You can return to the vehicle,
Consignee Bethune.
[WALKERS SNARLING DISTANTLY]
That was good. You're good at this.
Yeah, she's strong,
Rick, and I'm not Okafor.
We don't mess with security.
For all I know, she could be
sprinting towards the river.
You drew your sidearm.
You drew your knife.
I was ready to back you up.
And she's not running for the river.
You could bring her along.
I am not gonna be responsible
for a vulnerability.
I know it all now.
I see why we are out here, doing this.
I'm not Okafor.

THORNE: Cascadia Forward Operating Base.
Used to be a university.
We've made it into a center of power.
The only infantry who've seen
this place other than Frontline
is Grimes and I. You're in good company.
And you're only a consignee.
Do well, you'll have fresh
salmon for dinner.
Worth the trip across the country,
even if it means stopping for fuel
at five different jump points.
MICHONNE: There's nothing out here.
What's it protecting?
The security of the Civic Republic.
Expanded resources and intel
operations along the West Coast.
The future.
MAN: Amber-Indigo. Red in the field.
Threat is classified as imminent.
There's an assigned mission deployed.
Copy.
At the ready.
The briefing is now.
The mission is now.
Squads are out on operations,
so it's on us.
We have a significant sink
breach on the perimeter bars,
with scatters already incurring.
That is the obstacle.
The objective is 200-plus
incoming delts moving
towards the breach.
Flybys and dispersion charges
are bouncing off the rock face,
not doing their job.
So we are going to move
the delts ourselves,
right out of existence.
We are a few days away from
the summit of all CRM brass
and the entirety of
the Frontliner corps.
If the delts pile through that breach,
this project goes back to zero.
The plan gets set back.
Do we allow the plan to get set back?
- No, ma'am.
- SOLDIERS: No, ma'am.
THORNE: One soldier takes
the R-DIM through the breach,
to the horde and beyond it,
and places it 100 paces past
the horde's exit edge.
A flyby will shoot charges after
to create dispersional sound.
Who has the ball, ma'am.
I do.
Stealth is the play, soldiers.
Cold weapons and pneumatic rifles only.
Consignee, stay in formation.
I want you off the line
on cleanup, ready for no-kills.
We call them Frontliners, yes?
Keep them up front.
Things go sideways,
you get lost in the fog.
Don't panic.
Hit your PRB.
You hit that button,
and any CRM helicopter
within 300 miles can come find you.
Grab the ball, let's go.
The R-DIM why you?
'Cause you're all slow sacks of shit.
Since I've learned what I've learned
what you'll learn soon
I don't agree with Okafor on everything,
but he led from the ground up.
I want to do that.

[WALKERS SNARLING]

More incoming. Blocking the way.
We need to clear that now.
[GRUNTING]
I said you were off the line.
Stay back for no-kills.
MAN: Come on!
[GRUNTING]
Ah, shit!
Round everybody up, put
them towards the breach?
They're occupied.
Should have given the last seat
to a soldier.
We bring up the ball when there's a gap.

[SOLDIERS SHOUTING INDISTINCTLY]

Consignee Bethune!
Stand down!

[THUD]
Let's go.

- [BEEPING]
- Come on.

[ALARM BLARING]
[SNARLING]

Come on.
They'll find us. They will.
We'll make it so they can't.
Not like this.

10 delts left! 10 delts left!
[WALKERS SNARLING]

[EXHALES SHARPLY]
She broke protocol, which
made you break protocol.
She was running.
She needed help. You needed help.
We follow a chain of command
or order fails.
She went rogue and you followed.
How many others are gonna do that?
I trusted her. I put
my neck out for her.
For you. I regret it.
Don't. I wanted you to win.
That's why I did what I did.
Listen, maybe it was too early for her.
I'll send her back, give her
more time at the Harvest Point.
Yeah, for now.
We need to take care of this.
Us.
Take the consignee back.
I don't want to see her again, okay?
And you you handle all
the shit work, all the refuels.
I'll give you a pass this time, Grimes,
because you did help eliminate
a couple of hundred delts, okay?
Major General Beale wants to brief you.
You're moving up.
Rick, you better understand.

I'm headquartered here now,
through the summit and beyond.
Home sweet home.
No more day and a halfs
between here and Philly.
You should come take
a look at my quarters.
Beautiful view of the Cascades.
She hasn't seen me.
Oh.
There it is.
She saw me.
Doesn't matter.
- Jadis?
- It doesn't matter!
You're going back to base right now,
then I'm getting you
the hell out of here
if I have to knock you out
and put you on that Goddamn boat myself.
I belong here, you don't,
and you will never change that.
It's over.
Everything we had is broken.
You hear me?

[THUNDER CRASHING]

MICHONNE: Shoto, it's Daito.

I'm sorry.

[RICK SCREAMS]
I don't know if we'll be back.
[THUNDER CRASHES]
RICK: What the hell is this place?
We needed a time out.
Jadis will destroy our home
if I try to leave.
You wanna call them here?
We need to go back!
[GROWLING]
We don't have to be afraid.
Yes, we do.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]
JADIS: Hey, can you pass me a napkin?
Hi, Rick.
I'm gonna save you.
GIMPLE: This episode actually begins
with three different timelines
with the past, with
the very recent past,
and with the current timeline.
RICK: She doesn't belong here.
JADIS: Then she shouldn't
have come here.
But that was her choice.
Jadis is now legitimately
concerned that he could escape
because Michonne is there now.
And it's not only just
the motivation of that
but the way they work together.
So she's created some
insurance for herself.
If they kill her, they'll be found out.
Have your life together here.
Here we are the last light of the world.
LINCOLN: Essentially,
these two characters
are sort of caught in this stalemate.
She decided to, you know,
save Rick's life
and yet put him in purgatory
because he can't
he can never leave.
GIMPLE: And she sees this place
where people are safe and fed,
and she's blown away by it.
MCINTOSH: She believes in the long game,
and she is absolutely determined
to do her job,
and nothing will get in her way.
Hi. I'm Rick.
We own your lives.
You want to buy them back?
GIMPLE: More often than not,
these scenes are Andy and Pollyanna.
They just have always
played off each other so great.
Pollyanna had really hard stuff
to do in this show.
Head down.
Really strange stuff that she made real.
It was a little funnier
on the original show.
Well, we're together.
I lay with him after.
LINCOLN: I'll never forget
acting with her
half-naked in the heat in Atlanta.
And even though I was undressed,
how she was able
to still undress me even
further with her eyes.
It's a rare gift she has.
On this, it's a little darker,
it's a little more intense.
But the way that they interact,
the way they play
scenes together, I love it.
RICK: Follow the map.
There's a red canoe in the brush.
I love you.
GIMPLE: Is Rick in denial?
He's hoping against hope that she goes.
He's done everything
he could to get her to go.
Michonne sees that boat, and, you know,
expletives and just bewilderment,
because this is Rick Grimes,
this is the man she loves.
GURIRA: She faces him and starts to see
his position in this army
and how he seems to be embedded in it
in a way that he's not able
or willing to leave.
That's when she sees
there's a lot going on here.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]
LINCOLN: Essentially everything
that he's been doing
for the whole of the first episodes
is in order to save her life
and sacrifice his own.
Rick is trying to push Michonne away
in any way he can,
because he truly believes
she is in danger.
And she is, so he doesn't care.
He'll break her heart.
It's over. Everything we had is broken.
LINCOLN: Never say that to Michonne.
You know what I mean?
'Cause she pulls you
out of a helicopter
No!!
which, frankly, is
one of my favorite ends
of any episode we've ever done.
Made me so happy. I just thought,
"This is absolutely bonkers,
but we're doing it".
