NARRATOR: There are ghosts that haunt ghosts that hunt And ghosts that kill.
KEITH: When I first saw the house, there was something that wasn't quite right there.
It felt like something would jump out and grab me.
Krista? KEITH: I've never been so scared in my life.
Aah! I found out that they can, in fact, kill you.
Whatever was in that house was showing me now that they could physically harm me.
[ SCREAMS .]
My name is Keith Dovichi.
The events that happened to me sound crazy, but I swear on my life that they're true.
Aah! When I came out to Pioneer, I had no idea what I was getting into.
I had been living in Stockton, California.
I was out of employment, and I just lost the love of my life.
Felt like I needed to make a change.
My best friend had this place that needed fixing up, so I decided to come up and help a friend out.
When I first saw the house, I thought there was something that wasn't quite right there.
There was an odd feeling in there that I wasn't used to feeling.
There was a lot of spiders.
I had not seen so many spiders in a long time.
To get these spiders out of there was of major importance to me.
But it wasn't too long before I realized spiders were the least of my problems.
[ BIRDS CHIRPING .]
I'd been at the house, working, for about a month when [ DOOR CREAKS .]
i heard a big crash.
[ GLASS SHATTERS .]
And I thought, "What the hell was that?" When I got in the house, there was glass all over the ground.
It was a big mess.
I started looking around, trying to figure out where they came from.
I had stacks of wine glasses across on a shelf, and there was a hole right in the middle of them.
Where the shelf was and where the door was had to be 10 feet away from each other.
I didn't understand how glasses could just fall off a shelf and end up 10 feet away from it.
Not long after I moved in, I got a call from my daughter Sunrise.
I recently became a single mom, and I needed some help getting back on my feet.
SUNRISE: You ready to go see grandpa? My dad said my daughter krista and I could move in with him for a while.
I hadn't had much time to spend with my granddaughter yet, so I was looking forward to it.
SUNRISE: My dad was like, "There are some A few crazy things going on.
" I just was like, "Yeah, dad.
Okay.
" Hey, krista.
Good to see you.
[ CHUCKLES .]
[ TALKING INDISTINCTLY .]
I was more concerned with having a place to stay, having a roof over my daughter's head.
[ INDISTINCT CONVERSATION .]
KEITH: It wasn't too long after Sunrise moved in that she started having some things happen to her that were unexplainable for her, too.
SUNRISE: Krista, who is this? KRISTA: I don't know.
SUNRISE: It felt like something would jump out and grab me.
Where did you see him? I don't know.
I would get goose bumps when that feeling was around.
One day, I was in the kitchen [ CLATTERING .]
and I could hear our coffee cups clanging together.
And there was nobody there, and there was no breeze in the house, and nobody had been over there to touch them.
[ CLATTERING CONTINUES .]
And they were just sitting there, swinging back and forth, banging into each other.
It was an eerie feeling.
I was very afraid.
[ CLATTERING CONTINUES .]
KEITH: At this point in time, I was kind of curious.
I wanted to find out what it was.
I was not fearful.
All this was getting ready to change in a giant way.
It was about 1:00 in the morning, and I'd just got to sleep.
[ STATIC CRACKLING .]
I heard footsteps.
[ FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING .]
[ KNOCK ON DOOR .]
And then I heard a knock on the front door.
I got to find out who the hell was at my door at this time of night.
[ HEART THUMPING .]
So I look out, walk around the front door.
[ DOOR SLAMS .]
[ DOORKNOB RATTLES .]
Turn around the go back in The damn door was locked.
At that point, I was thinking somebody drew me out of my house, gained entry, and then they locked me out of my house.
As I came in the back door [ SIGHS .]
i noticed two shadow figures just went into my bedroom.
I immediately grabbed my shotgun, loaded it [ GUN COCKS .]
Come out.
I'm armed.
and shouted out, "I'm armed.
" Nobody answered, so I went in after them.
I spun around, thinking that they got to be in the closet.
[ HEART THUMPING .]
I have to say that this was probably the moment that opened my eyes to ghosts being in the house.
'Cause I saw them go in my bedroom.
I know something went in there.
At this point, I think I would have to say I was definitely freaked out.
About that time, it had to be 2:30 in the morning, but now my adrenaline was kicked in, so I decided to go in the kitchen and make a cup of coffee.
I should have never let my guard down, because that's when the ghosts started to attack.
[ SCREAMS .]
KEITH: People say that ghosts are in their own realm, that they can't hurt you.
Let me tell you something From my own experiences They definitely can.
It was in the middle of the night, and I was in the kitchen.
I just so happened to look up.
When I did, I saw a reflection of someone in the window.
Suddenly, there was a burning sensation That of a very bad sunburn.
Aah! [ GRUNTING .]
I had to get out.
I was in pain from the attack on my back.
I went out on the back deck and smoked a cigarette.
Noticed that my daughter had slept through everything.
At that point, I was very terrified.
Whatever was in the house was showing me now that they could physically harm me.
[ BIRDS CHIRPING .]
[ RUSTLING .]
[ GASPS .]
Hey.
Hey.
What are you doing out here? Uh, I don't know.
SUNRISE: That morning, I came out, and there was my dad sitting on the porch.
He didn't look very good.
I asked him what was wrong, and he told me to look at his back.
Okay.
[ GROANS .]
Oh, my god.
[ GROANS .]
He had bloody scratches on his back.
These ones weren't just regular scratches.
These ones actually dug down into the skin.
They were welted, bleeding a little.
Fresh, I would say.
When I saw what had happened to him, it freaked me out.
I said to my dad, "You know, after last night, you know, what's next?" It was about a week after that night with my dad.
I was taking a shower, getting ready for work [ WATER RUNNING .]
and I felt, like, a small, warm hand on my back.
I felt it running from the middle of my back down to the small of my back.
Krista, mommy's taking a shower.
[ SIGHS .]
she'll be out in a minute.
I thought it was my daughter krista trying to get in the shower with me.
I turned around to look Krista, I told you, I'll be out and there was nobody there.
Krista? I kind of just shrugged it off as my imagination.
So, I went back to taking my shower, and it touched me again.
After that, there was no telling myself that it was just in my head.
I felt very violated, being touched in the shower.
Whatever was in the house didn't have a sense of boundaries.
KEITH: Not long after Sunrise had her experience with the spirits, I felt the thickness of the air, the heaviness of the air, that there was another presence with me and I heard a whisper in my left ear.
MAN: E sha ha.
I had no clue what "e sha ha" meant.
All I knew is it sounded native American, and it was definitely a verbal threat.
That night, I went into investigation mode, trying to find out what "e sha ha" meant.
E sha ha.
Found out that the valley in which we stay was a trading post for the miwok tribe, and in 1921, the white man had given blankets as gifts to the Indians, and they were infected with the smallpox virus, which wiped out the whole tribe.
I did find a man that speaks the native tongue, and he told me that the phrase, "e sha ha," means, in the harshest way "The baby will die.
" KEITH: If somebody was to tell me that, "These spirits are gonna try to kill you" I think I would have laughed at them and said, "Let them try.
" Aah! I needed to get rid of this ghost.
When I heard that phrase, "e sha ha," "The baby will die," I went into protection mode.
My main goal was to protect my granddaughter.
I gathered my grandmother's crucifix that was blessed by the Vatican and was preparing to go to battle.
When I was done, the heaviness in the house seemed to go out the door, like it [ EXHALES DEEPLY .]
We're safe now, honey.
I felt kind of proud that it Thought maybe it worked, unknown to me that I kind of angered the god, you might say.
[ CRICKETS CHIRPING .]
[ GROANS .]
So, that night, I was trying to sleep, but I was restless.
[ SIGHS .]
I felt as if there was another presence with me.
[ PICTURE FRAME CLATTERS .]
[ SCREAMS .]
Suddenly almost felt like somebody's hand was in my chest, trying to stop my heart.
Aah! I'm thinking I'm having a heart attack.
[ GRUNTS .]
I felt as if I was going to die.
[ PANTING .]
I've never been so scared in my life.
SUNRISE: In the morning, I found my dad in the living room.
He was hunched over in pain, holding his chest, pale, sweaty.
I knew there was something wrong.
I told him, "I'm calling an ambulance, or I'm taking you to the hospital.
" The doctors had did x-rays, and it was concluded that he had a concave chest Like he had been in an accident or something.
It's terrifying.
KEITH: At this point, I wanted answers.
A friend told me of an Indian priestess that he thought might be able to help me.
You have been visited by spirits.
They have tried to do you harm.
She told me that I was at war with a chief of a tribe You are living on their land.
and that I must ask for his permission to remain there.
If I do this, she feels he'll accept my apology and allow us to stay.
When I got home, I called to the spirit, and I asked for his forgiveness.
Great spirit who lives in these woods I asked for a sign of acceptance.
my family and me in peace.
And I felt my right hand, as if somebody touched it almost like a handshake.
I felt relief.
There was an end to a very bad situation.
I've faced a lot.
I've seen a lot.
I can't compare this to anything.
There's no comparison.
[ VOICE BREAKING .]
it's the scariest Scariest thing I've ever had to go through.
This experience has made me a very strong believer in the afterlife That ghosts do exist and that they can actually reach out and touch you, literally.
My name is Chan Greer.
I guess it's one thing to hear about a ghost story, but I never knew it would be real.
I never thought it would happen to me.
I grew up in cullman.
I've pretty much lived here my whole life.
[ TRAIN WHISTLE SOUNDS .]
I've never really thought about living anywhere else.
So, as soon as I had the opportunity, I bought the house.
It was a small house Not very big.
I didn't need a big house.
Everybody wants a place they can call their own, so I got it, and oh, I was thrilled.
I thought, "Well, here's the place that I can start my groundwork for life.
" When I bought my house, I had been in the national guard about six or seven years.
A few weeks after I bought it, I had to deploy to Iraq.
When I deployed, I asked a friend of mine to take care of it.
It was really nice having someone at the house that I could trust to tell me what's going on.
When I first deployed, everything seemed fine, but it really wasn't long before I started getting concerned messages saying that there are some things out of place.
My friend told me that her daughter was talking to someone in the back bedroom.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
[ TALKING INDISTINCTLY .]
Of course, for a 3-year-old, that's normal An imaginary friend.
But things started happening weird after that.
My friend told me that her daughter watched it all the time to see where it would go, what it would do.
She said that he gets angry.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
And he doesn't like things to be out of place.
When she first started telling me, I didn't pay any attention to it.
I was a skeptic.
I mean, I didn't think that it was true.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
[ SCREAMS .]
GREER: But then she had told me her daughter would refuse to sleep in the room at night.
And for a 3-year-old not to go in her bedroom where all her toys and stuff were was kind of crazy.
[ TALKING INDISTINCTLY .]
That's when she started getting scared.
My friend said, "To heck with this place.
" It bothered them so much that they moved.
I didn't really think much of it, because I thought, "Well, maybe the mom's just stressed.
" But things definitely changed when I got back home and got settled back in.
That's when I started noticing things for myself.
[ SCREAMS .]
I had seen a lot of things in my tour of duty that I wished I could forget, but, compared to war, that that house was very scary.
When I came home from overseas, I moved back in to the house I had bought before my tour in Iraq.
It was a nice homecoming to have my own place, and I could enjoy it, finally.
But after a while, I started noticing things that just didn't make sense.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
[ KNOCKING .]
The first thing I noticed was pretty much the knocking.
I started hearing some knocking in different parts of the house.
[ KNOCKING CONTINUES .]
It was like it originated from the back bedroom, but I could be in the kitchen and hear the same thing right behind me.
I really tried to explain everything, you know, rationally A pipe making a sound, an animal.
You know, I tried to fix the pipes, inspect them, you know, see if there's something that it could have collided with and made a sound, but I really couldn't explain what was going on in there.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
I thought, "Okay, I got to get back in the swing of things", not be paranoid at every drop of a hat," but it drove me insane.
At the time, I had a lot of stuff that I didn't know what to do with, so I put it back in the back bedroom.
It would be cold really cold.
It was very just peculiar, because the rest of the house was warm.
It stinks.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
I would smell smoke.
Pretty much the only place that I smelled the smoke aroma was in that back bedroom.
I tried burning a candle but it would always have that aroma, no matter what I did.
It was just very strange to me.
After all this stuff started happening, I wasn't really scared, but I needed to prove it to myself that I wasn't just hearing something and making things up in my head.
So, one day, I finally decided to do a little bit of my own investigative work and try to figure out what it was.
[ TALKING INDISTINCTLY .]
[ BUTTON CLICKS .]
The next day, when I listened to the recording, I was very surprised at what I heard.
[ THUDDING, STATIC CRACKLING .]
I heard thumps and, all of a sudden, I heard on the tape sounded to be, like, a roar or a growl or something.
[ GROWLING .]
[ BUTTON CLICKS .]
It was pretty scary.
I shut the tape recorder off, and I was mad.
I thought, "Okay, well, I got a ghost, and he's messing with me.
" Soon after I came home, I met a girl in one of my classes named Tonya.
After a little while, Tonya and I started dating.
I knew she was picking up on something the second she walked in.
It's kind of cold in here.
CARTER: It felt strange.
There was always a smell of smoke in the house.
It just felt this heavy feel.
I never slept well in Chan's house.
That house was scary.
I would feel like somebody's staring at us.
[ CREAKING .]
And then you would hear those cricks.
I thought, "Maybe, you know, it's in my head", and I just need to relax," so, um, I told myself that it was fine.
GREER: I was hoping that nothing was gonna bother her.
I never really expected anything to happen, but I was wrong.
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
CARTER: The house is always gonna haunt me.
It's always gonna haunt my nightmares in my sleep.
I believe in ghosts, but I never thought that they could hurt us in any way until that house.
That night, Chan and I watched, like, a movie for, like, an hour, and he said, you know, "Let's go to bed.
" So, we laid down and fell asleep.
GREER: Whenever she slept over, I felt really, really calm, and I thought, "Hey, that's gonna be a good night", "because there's another energy in the house that ain't trying to aggravate me.
" CARTER: All of a sudden, I woke up, and it was cold.
I was shivering.
I knew that something was going on.
It was too cold.
I knew it wasn't right.
It was pitch dark in the room, and I couldn't see anything in front of me, and then all of a sudden Chan! i could feel fingertips grabbing me and pulling me down on the end of the bed.
I was fighting back as much as I could.
I was just grabbing the covers.
It was just, like, a panic to get myself back on the bed.
Finally, it released me, and I crawled up in behind him.
Chan? I thought he would wake up, but he didn't even move.
I didn't want to move.
It was the most frightening thing I've ever experienced.
When I woke up, I thought, "Maybe I was just dreaming it.
" Look at this.
What happened? But I glanced down, and there was the fingerprints.
GREER: It was a black-and-green-looking handprint, like something had grabbed her and grabbed her hard.
I was yanked out of the bed in the middle of the night.
CARTER: You could see the bruises, and it was perfectly shaped where I had got grabbed.
I knew it was evil at that point.
Why would it be pulling me out of bed for no reason like that if it wasn't trying to hurt me? GREER: Let's go.
Show yourself.
Why don't you attack me? After she got a bruise, I was so agitated.
Come on.
Let's go.
CARTER: He couldn't harm it because it wasn't in physical form, and I think that's what kicked in with him the most.
Come on! Do something! Come on! Come at me! I was pissed.
I walked through, cussing it, talking about it, daring it Just anything and everything I could think of to scare it or piss it off.
Come on! Daring it to do things.
Come on out! I dare you.
Nothing.
Nothing, yet.
A couple nights later, I heard things coming from the storage room.
I had the sense that there was something Something crazy, just out of the norm, happening.
When I opened the door i gazed upon what appeared to be a man with chewed-up face.
It was intense.
It just didn't compute in my mind.
I didn't know what I was looking at, and it scared me.
After I seen the face, I left probably for about three days.
At some point, I decided just to man up.
CARTER: He's military, and he's not gonna run away from it.
He's gonna try to fight it hisself because that's how he's bred to be.
GREER: When I first got home, I remember the knocking being really bad.
[ KNOCKING .]
My radio started losing power [ STATIC CRACKLING .]
and the volume would go down, come back up, and there was nothing I could do about it.
[ KNOCKING CONTINUES .]
It felt like it was just a lot of people in the room A lot of things going on that I couldn't physically see.
[ WHISPERING INDISTINCTLY .]
I wasn't in control of that night.
There was definitely something taking me for a ride.
MAN: [ DEMONIC VOICE .]
Come on, Chan.
Go, Chan, go.
It's not your fault.
You're mine now, Chan.
Something told me, "Go over to Tonya's house," and then all the real bad stuff started happening.
[ SCREAMS .]
MAN: [ DEMONIC VOICE .]
Come on, Chan.
CARTER: The whole time I've known Chan, I've never seen him act strange as he did that night, and I never want to see it again.
GREER: I just remember feeling really, like, a lot of pressure.
Just oppressive just, like, pressure all over me.
CARTER: He had called me and said that there was some weird things happening, and he's like, "I just don't feel right.
It doesn't feel right in here.
" [ DEEP, MONOTONE VOICE .]
I'm coming over right now.
This doesn't sound like you.
His voice got really deep all of a sudden.
I know Chan, and I know how he talks, and there was no way that was him.
No.
No, don't come over.
He wanted to come over my house.
I kept telling him, "No.
" And then he kept saying, "Yes, I am.
" Hello? Chan? [ DIAL TONE .]
All of a sudden, the phone call gets disconnected.
Hello? GREER: The last thing I remember was calling Tonya, and then something told me to leave the house.
That's when everything got fuzzy.
CARTER: All I could think of was, "Please, don't let him come over here.
" I had a bad feeling about About what might happen.
[ WHIMPERS .]
I knew the ghost had took Chan over, and I knew his intentions were bad.
GREER: During the drive, I was losing consciousness of what was going on around me.
It definitely wasn't me doing the driving.
It was very strange.
CARTER: The next thing I knew, I could see his car pull in.
I saw him get out of the car.
He was sweating and shaking and pale white, and, I mean, he looked like he was just, like, glossed over.
I was afraid to open the door because I was afraid that he was possessed.
GREER: [ DEMONIC VOICE .]
Let me in.
[ DOORKNOB CLICKING .]
Tonya.
[ KNOCKING ON DOOR .]
I've never seen Chan like that.
I was scared for my life.
[ GROWLING .]
[ KNOCKING CONTINUES .]
[ PANTING .]
[ HEART THUMPING .]
I didn't know if I wanted to let him in.
I didn't know what would happen.
Finally got up courage, and I opened the door.
[ CRICKETS CHIRPING .]
Oh, my god.
Chan.
You okay? He was groggy, and he didn't look right, at all.
It was hard to see him like that.
He's usually so tough.
GREER: The next morning, I felt like someone had just beat the crap out of me.
I probably didn't move the rest of the day.
CARTER: I think that point, he had enough, and he didn't want to deal with it anymore, and he moved out of the house.
GREER: If I knew what was gonna happen when I was in that house, I definitely wouldn't have bought it.
I do think it's still possessed.
I think the house will always remain possessed and and evil.
I'm not gonna find out, because I'm not gonna go over there.
That I don't think that you can get rid of that stuff that easily.
GREER: A lot of people don't believe in ghost stories, but when you and the people you love are mixed up in them, it becomes real.
It was my experience, and I'm changed for it.
