Duets (2012) s01e04 Episode Script

Party Songs

1 (Quddus) Last week on "Duets," our first amateur went home Alexis Foster.
They didn't understand my heart.
They didn't understand where I was coming from.
(Sniffles) Yes, sir! Leaving superstar Robin thicke with only one hope tonight Olivia chisholm.
Tell me this isn't crazy right now your love's got me looking so crazy right now Jennifer's two amateurs, J.
Rome To live And John glosson Soul Were at the top of the charts.
But can they stay there? I'm just secretly trying to figure out how to get you kicked off the show.
(Laughs) Meanwhile, meleana's fairy tale came crashing down Some people want it all As did bridget's.
I heard it through the grapevine With both of John legend's amateurs falling on the chart.
Oh, my girls are not going home.
Yeah! And Jordan finally strutted her stuff.
Nobody else to blame, go and Don't throw it at me if you don't want me to catch it, baby.
While Jason had to sing for his life Holding hands Barely surviving elimination.
Here we go! "Duets" continues with party songs Yow! I love rock 'n' roll But not everyone's having a good time.
I don't know where to begin.
It was really pitchy.
I felt like she could've stretched a little bit.
After each duet, the superstars who didn't perform give a secret score to the amateurs, and the two lowest scoring amateurs will have to sing for their lives the last time I was gonna sing on the stage.
When the music stops, one's going home for good.
Nobody's safe, so you have to give everything you got every time.
Then in two weeks, we go live What could possibly go wrong? And you, America, get to vote on who will stay and who will go.
So take that, America! What are you gonna do with it? Captioned by closed captioning services, inc.
Thank you! Welcome to "Duets"! (Cheering) I'm your host Quddus, and it's about to go down tonight.
We have got seven huge performances lined up for you.
Our amateurs and superstars are gonna bring the energy, and they're gonna get it crackin' on this stage as they tackle some of the biggest and baddest party songs of all time.
But before we kick it off, let's hear it for our superstars John legend Thank you! Kelly clarkson (Cheering) Robin thicke, and Jennifer nettles.
Very shortly, they'll be joining our amateurs right up here on the "Duets" stage, and the pressure will be at an all-time high, because at the end of tonight's show, one more amateur will be going home.
Robin, last week, unfortunately one of yours was the first to go.
How tough is that, to see one of you duet partners get sent home? Well, you know, it's it's it's all very exciting to be on this show, I mean, for the contestants and the stars, and and I think at that moment, you realized they were all still human beings and that, you know, loss hurts and pain hurts.
And no matter what happens tonight to any of us, you know, that, uh, everybody just just, uh, stays true to their heart and, uh, keeps following their dreams, you know? You're a good man, Robin thicke.
Yes.
Kelly, Jason was also up for elimination and he sung and survived.
(Kelly) Yes.
What do you think I got a survivor, baby! Yeah, you do.
(Laughs) He's been in the bottom every frickin' week! Yeah.
So We're gettin' him up there.
What do you think he has to do to change that tonight? He's about to show you.
Okay.
(Cheering) Them's fightin' words.
(Laughs) Okay.
So with a new life and a fresh chart this week, Jason has taken on a party song that he can relate to.
Congratulations.
You did not get kicked off.
(Jason laughs) (Chuckles) I was actually shocked that Jason was second to last, last week That was, like, a really awesome performance.
Let's go ahead.
We'll watch it real quick.
I asked them to bring it in so we could watch it.
But I still thought he did a beautiful job of emoting, and I thought he should've been higher than he was.
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth See how that was a little flat? And then when I watched it back, I was like, "okay, there are pitchy places that I couldn't here.
" I was shocked.
After watching that, there are definitely, like, pitchy parts.
(Jason) Being in the bottom is a second home because every week, I'm always there.
Singing for their lives, here are Jason farol and Alexis Foster.
(Jason) I was kind of expecting to go home, so I kind of had nothing to lose.
Holding hands (Kelly) I think him being in the bottom two, singing a capella, they respect him a little more as a singer now.
Like, it's gotta be like I can't get me no We picked a soulful song.
It's called "satisfaction.
" I wanna see that movement.
I wanna be, like, this kind of stuff This week is all about stage presence, 'cause everybody's gonna sing songs that are probably easy to sing.
They're sing-along songs.
Party songs are sing-along songs.
So I think you've gotta have that party vibe going.
(Piano playing "satisfaction") I can't get no Yes! I can't get no Shut up! (Laughs) I'm looking forward to singing this song because the lyrics really connect with my journey on the show.
(Kelly) Yes! I can't get no satisfaction I've been trying and trying, and the superstars still aren't satisfied with my performances.
I want you to look at them and be like I can't get no 'cause you ain't voting for me Specifically, I'm looking for Jason to move.
(Laughs) I'm looking for him to just own his body and be comfortable on stage.
Just do this (Snaps fingers) Yes.
All right.
Don't not this! What are you doing? (Laughs) (Laughs) Okay.
Okay.
She wants me to dance, and that's pretty different for me.
So I think I just gotta up my game a bit more and I'll be all right.
Yeah! Singing the rolling stones' first-ever number one hit in the U.
S.
, "satisfaction," here is Kelly clarkson and her duet partner Jason farol.
I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try, try, try I can't get me no I can't get no Whoo! When I'm driving in my car and the man comes on the radio telling me more and more about some useless information he's trying to mess with my imagination I can't get me no I can't get no hey, hey, hey hey that's what I say yeah I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try, try, try I can't get me no I can't get no when I'm watching my TV and then a man comes on to tell me how white my shirt can be but he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me hey, hey, hey hey that's what I say yeah hey, hey, hey that's what I say 'cause I try and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try and I try, try, try I can't get me no I can't get no I can't when I'm driving in my car and the man comes on the radio he's telling me more and more about some useless information he's trying to mess with my imagination I can't get me no I can't get no I can't get me no Yeah! I can't get me no satisfaction (Cheering) Okay! Ha ha! Jason farol back with a vengeance! So what message did you wanna send to the superstars with that one? Give me some satisfaction! (Kelly) Yeah! (Laughs) Quite literally.
So, Jason, let's hear from the other superstars and what they thought about that performance.
Let's go to Jennifer first.
That was your best performance so far this show.
(Cheers and applause) Here's the thing, boo.
I mean, I know you've been working and struggling at the bottom of the charts here for a few weeks, but you're also one of the youngest on the show, so you have so much potential that you can grow, and you have one of the best in the business to help you with that growth, and this is a-a I'm paying her to say that.
Thank you.
Don't be all shy.
Don't act modest.
You are.
I paid her to say that.
Thank you.
So, John, last week you thought that he didn't really pronounce his words that well.
Do you think he corrected that this week? Yeah.
I think this is his most effective vocal performance (Jennifer) Mm-hmm.
So far.
It was very good.
Whoo! I was of two minds about the movements because it felt like sometimes it looked like you were having fun but sometimes it looked like you were thinking through the moves you're doing to tell us you can perform.
(Scattered boos) It kind of looked like that.
(Chuckles) Still, a lot of progress from last week.
There was definitely a lot of progress, absolutely.
All right.
Yeah! Robin? I totally agree that that was your best performance here, you know.
And, uh (Cheering) You know, at first I was watching you, and then I couldn't help but watch Kelly do that little shake she was doing.
(Jennifer) Whoo! But, uh, but, yeah, what I will say, Jason, is I think your nerves are starting to go away, and I-I'm really excited to see what you do, uh, the rest of the show, too, 'cause it really seems like you're you're percolatin', just percolatin' right now.
Thank you.
(Cheering) All right, so here's a quick reminder of how the scoring works.
The tho didn't just pm have now just entered a secret score on their "Duets" tablet between 1 and 100, based upon performance and presentation.
After each amateur performs, we'll add those up and reveal where they stand on our chart.
The better your singing, the better your standing.
All right, Jason, let's see where you're at on the chart.
(Cheering) Yeah.
(Man) Whoo! Since he was the first to perform he's not at the bottom! Yeah! (Laughs) He's not at the bottom.
Exactly.
Okay, so obviously, since you kicked off the show, you're gonna hold down the number one spot.
But as the night goes on, we'll see if that performance is good enough to keep you out of the bottom two.
All right.
Well, best of luck.
You can join Kelly in the lounge now.
Thanks.
We got John legend and bridget carrington taking us back to the '70s with an academy award-winning hit, and six more amateurs preparing to take the stage.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
(Cheering) Welcome back to "Duets," where our amateurs are setting the stage on fire with some of the hottest party songs of all time.
Now don't forget.
At the end of tonight's show, two amateurs at the bottom of our chart will sing for their lives in a solo showdown, and somebody will be sent home.
After bridget carrington landed in the middle of the pack at number four on the chart last week, let's see how she approached this week's rehearsal with John legend.
Last week, I thought we were one of the best performances of the night, and we were not the most sentimental (Exhales deeply) Performance of the night, so Can't beat the tears.
The tears.
I'm not much of a crier so I haven't been able to inspire (Laughing) My singers, like Jennifer.
(lmitates crying) I can't do it.
Any given week, we could be number one or we could be number five, and number five's not gonna cut it.
We don't want to go back to tax collection.
No, we don't.
(Sighs) Yeah.
You know, I used to work in management consulting for several years.
So I would go to the studio and I'd still have my business casual outfit on (Laughs) And I'd be, like, playing for kanye or singing on Jay-Z's project and I was still working a day job.
I'll what it's like (Laughs) (Sighs) Okay.
To have that 9 to 5.
It was interesting to know that John had a similar background where he actually had a job and he was just doing music on the side.
We gonna try to make it so you don't have to go back.
And it gave me some type of hope that it can happen for me, too.
(Plays chord) last dance last chance for love Yeah, that's good.
This week, we're doing Donna summer's "last dance.
" 'Cause when I'm bad I'm so, so bad It's a little bit hard to show your vocal ability in a faster tune.
Make sure you get them entry notes.
That's the most important thing, 'cause everything else comes so easy to you.
Part of my job is to convince bridget that she deserves to be here.
Come on, baby Let's put some more stank on it.
Come on, baby dance that dance Music is in me and it's something I have to do, so I'm just going for it.
Man, I gotta figure out how to cry more often.
I know.
(Sighs deeply) Tell me a sob story or something.
Mm.
(Sighs) I can't do it.
(Laughing) I ain't even mad at ya! Paying homage to the late Donna summer, with a special tribute performance of "last dance," here is John legend and his duet partner bridget carrington.
last dance last chance for love yes, it's my last chance for romance tonight (Woman) Whoo! I need you by me beside me to guide me to hold me to scold me 'cause when I'm bad I'm so, so bad so let's dance the last dance let's dance the last dance let's dance the last dance tonight last dance last chance for love yes, it's my last chance for romance tonight oh, oh, I need you by me beside me to guide me to hold me to scold me 'cause when I'm bad I'm so, so bad so let's dance the last dance let's dance the last dance let's dance the last dance tonight oh oh, oh, oh, oh whoo, ooh, ooh baby yeah, yeah oh, oh, oh, I need you by me beside me to guide me to hold me to scold me 'cause when I'm bad I'm so, so bad so come on, baby dance that dance come on, baby dance that dance come on, baby dance that dance tonight yeah, yeah, yeah tonight (Cheering) Hey! Nicely done.
You definitely had me dancing.
(Chuckles) So how much does that mean to you, to be able to honor Donna like that? Well, I mean, she was the queen of disco, so we couldn't have picked a better song for this week.
Well, let's hear from our superstars now.
Kelly, what'd you think of that? I love how you ended.
I thought that was awesome.
Like, how you just went for the mnh.
And, like, he did his whole, like, "hey, I'm posing for a magazine," it looked really awesome.
I love it.
(John laughs) And no, it was sexy, and I loved that y'all together were so cute up there and it was all intimate.
You made it sexy.
You made it fun.
Now only one thing for you is, I want to see you, and you keep looking at him.
And I love that you're looking but she can't help it! But I see she cannot help it.
He is gorgeous.
I get it.
But get over how hot he is, and look at these beautiful faces out here.
I'm like 'cause I-I just wanna see you performing more, but other than that, I loved it.
That's one of my favorites for you.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Jennifer? I will say that I am surprised that all of these are turning out to be the favorites because we've all been discussing among ourselves that party songs, at first we felt a bit apprehensive.
They tend to be faster and a little bit less vocally active.
But I love where then you took the song at the end, you were doing all the runs and the vocalese stuff and you made it really big and fun, and I thought it was really great.
You're so confident up there.
Its nice.
Thank you.
Robin? You have such a passion when you perform Mm-hmm.
Which is what I respect, which is what I try to perform with, is passion.
But I did just wanna see it just reach that next level of fun as well as the passion that you were singing with from your heart and soul, which might be, you know, why that's the remix.
That one Yeah, the remix.
Yeah.
(Laughs) We're gonna get kanye we're gonna get kanye on the remix.
Yeah, you you always do such an amazing job.
It was beautiful.
Thank you.
(Speaks indistinctly) Well, we've heard what our superstars have to say.
Now let's see your position on the chart now.
Okay.
Right to the top.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
So now you can join your superstar in the lounge.
And next up, we got Jennifer nettles and J.
Rome taking on a Michael Jackson classic.
This is one of the performances you do not want to miss.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets.
" Now before the break, bridget performed and moved into the number one position on the chart.
But there's still five more amateurs waiting to take the stage.
Up next is Jennifer nettles and her duet partner J.
Rome.
I feel like we're here now, you know, you're at the top of the charts Mm-hmm.
And we need to keep our heads in the game.
Everyone in this competition is reaching for the top of the charts.
I want J.
Rome to reach for the stars he's been number one for three weeks in a row.
Tonight, tonight ooh, ooh, ooh, honey all that I've been living for You're so good.
I hate you.
(Laughs) Do we wanna keep number one status every week? Yes.
But the important thing is to look at this as an opportunity to prepare him for what I am telling you is inevitably coming.
I feel like I'm a pop/r&b artist Mm-hmm.
And, uh, and and and Michael is, too, and it's ironic because that's what we're doing this week, you know.
Right.
The party song that me and Jennifer chose was, uh, "p.
Y.
T.
" "Pretty young thing" by Michael Jackson.
(Piano playing "p.
Y.
T.
") I want to love you pretty young thing I want to make everybody, like, just get up and dance Say na, na-na, na (Laughs) 'Cause last week I made everybody cry.
Listen to me trying to be Michael Jackson.
(Laughing) tender loving care Oh, huh? Huh? (Claps hands) I love it.
Yes! I don't aspire to be rich.
(Falsetto) I'll take you there Do you wanna go with do your falsetto for that? I aspire to be a positive person Thank you, guys.
And just loving life.
I want America to see how much I love this.
I want America to see how much this means to me and how much I love them.
I want to love you We can definitely tell so far.
Singing Michael Jackson's "P.
Y.
T.
," here's Jennifer nettles and her duet partner J.
Rome.
(Cheering) I always wanted a P.

(Man) J.
Rome! (Panting) Ain't no easy thing.
Yeah, that is not an easy thing to sing.
No.
(Laughs) So at this point, you've been number one on the chart every week out.
Is that a lot of added pressure? Yes, 'cause, I mean, judging from from from last week, nobody's safe, so you have to give everything you got every time, so hopefully you guys thought so.
All right.
Let's see what they think right now.
Kelly, you told J.
Rome last week that he's so good you hate him.
I do.
I can't stand him.
In a positive way.
Do you hate him even more tonight? No, in a positive way.
J.
Rome, you know I love you.
You're one of my favorites in this competition.
My biggest thing that I really did not like about that performance is I love J.
Rome, and I think that just looked like you were impersonating Michael Jackson all the time.
(Scattered boos) Sorry.
Thank you, though.
Okay.
She's entitled to her opinion.
She's entitled to her opinion, but you can boo.
You can boo me.
That's all right.
I love J.
Rome, and he knows that.
(John laughs) I love you, too, Kelly.
All right.
So, Robin, what do you think? Oh, man, you belong on a stage.
You know, even the way you cracked a smile when you turned to the audience and you know exactly when to crack that smile, that 1,000-watt smile like, I-I really think that this show is just the stepping-stone for you to start your career in the music business, without question.
I-I-I do.
Thank you, Robin.
Thank you.
You belong up there, man.
Thank you.
Absolutely.
John? I mean, it gets old telling you how good you are every week.
I think the only comment I would say, vocally it it was a little nasal and I feel like sometimes you gotta watch that and sound a little more full.
But you're awesome, and you know it, and, uh, you're gonna keep being awesome 'cause you you're good.
(Chuckles) Thank you.
He might know, but he always likes hearing it.
All right, so we've heard from our superstars.
The scores are locked in.
J.
Rome, let's find out where you are on the chart.
At the top.
Thank you, guys.
Congratulations.
That means you're safe yet again.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Go ahead to the lounge.
All right, next up it's Robin thicke and Olivia chisholm's turn to take the stage with an R&B classic from Al green.
And later, John legend and meleana brown have a surprise duet for one of our superstars that you do not want to miss.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
We are back here on "Duets," and before the break, J.
Rome kept up his chart-topping ways and moved right back into the number one spot.
Right now, that bottom two in jeopardy of going home is comprised of Jason and bridget.
Up next, we got Robin thicke, and he's down to one last duet partner.
So this week, he decided to turn Olivia chisholm's rehearsal into a family affair.
Hello! How you doing, sweetie? Good.
Hi! You've met Julian before, right? You remember Olivia? You give her a big hug? Yes.
Yeah? Can I have a hug? Thank you! I brought my little boy Julian because I haven't gotten to spend as much time with him as I normally like to.
And do it.
Feel it.
He just lightens the pressure, you know? And and he makes me realize that my art is my everything, but it's not more than him now.
You know, he's the most important thing.
This week, we're gonna do one of the greatest love songs of all time, Al green's "let's stay together" Okay.
'Cause we we're a family now, okay.
Okay.
I'm a real family guy.
You know, I got my little boy and I've been I've been with the same woman for a very long time.
So this is about us fighting to stay together (Chuckles) Okay.
(Laughs) On this show and, uh, not get voted off.
(Piano playing "let's stay together") I'm ooh, babe I'm so in love with you love with you It does not feel good seeing someone be eliminated, especially someone who's on my team.
(Quddus) Alexis Foster.
Aw! I'm sure Alexis going home affected Olivia but no more than it affects any of the contestants.
It makes them all realize, oh, my gosh, somebody went home tonight.
It's all right with me Say it like it's all right.
Really say it there.
(Sings indistinctly) One time.
One more second.
'Cause you sound great.
Now I just want you to add that When you say you're "so in love with" me, I need to feel it.
You know what I mean? Okay.
I wanna feel like you're in love with me.
I don't want Robin to have nobody, you know? So that just motivates me to work even harder.
I'm so in love with you Whoo! There you go.
What was that? Oh, what? (Chuckles) That's what I'm talking about.
wanna do I'm trying to teach Olivia to connect with the lyric, but she's so young she's only 21 years old so she might not have even been in love yet.
So sometimes you have to kind of act it or or get as close as you can to the truth of what love feels like to sell the emotion of the song.
Okay, give her a big kiss good-bye.
Bye.
Mwah! Blow her a big kiss.
Bye-bye! Mwah! Okay, bye, sweetie.
Bye.
So, yeah, just work it, work it, work it.
All right.
Bye! You're gonna be great.
Bye, sweetie-pie.
Thank you.
(Julian babbles) Yeah.
(Cheering) Performing one of my favorite songs of all time, Al green's "let's stay together," this is Robin thicke and his duet partner Olivia chisholm.
ooh ooh-ooh-ooh ahh I'm I'm so in love with you whatever you want to do it's all right with me 'cause you make me feel so brand-new new ooh, ooh I want to share my life with you you ooh, ooh things just ain't the same since we've been together oh, loving you forever is what I need let me be the one you come running to oh I'll never be untrue oh, baby, baby let's let's stay together together loving you whether whether whether times are good or bad, happy or sad why, somebody tell me why do people break up? oh, turn around and make up see, I just can't see baby, yeah 'cause you'd never do that to me would you, baby? to be around you is all I see here's what I want to do let's oh, oh let's stay together together loving you whether whether whether times are good or bad, happy or sad good or bad, happy or sad good or bad, happy or sad (A capella) let's stay together, oh ooh, ooh-ooh ooh Nicely done.
So last week, you decided to take on a modern song with Jay-Z and beyoncé.
Yeah.
This week, an old-school classic.
How did you feel you did just now? I feel I did good.
I had fun.
And I just came on here and made sure that when I came up here I had fun at the end of the day.
Good.
That is the bottom line, I think.
Yes.
(Chuckles) All right, well, let's hear from our superstars.
John, last week, you were mesmerized by her legs.
(Laughing) Were you mesmerized by her voice this week? Um, I think you are great when it comes to the sound and smooth, which this song certainly calls for.
But I think it needs a little bit more strength, too, to compliment the full voice, you know? Okay.
Tute observation, sir.
Now Kelly? How soft you sing I mean, you have amazing breath control.
Not many people can sing that soft and hold out those notes that long.
But I just think sometimes when you don't push and I tell Jason and Jordan this all the time any kind of hesitancy or any kind of not strong enough, you're gonna sound pitchy Okay.
And that was my only thing.
Good note.
Now, Jennifer, what are you thinking? I didn't I didn't notice as much on I noticed a little bit on the pitchy thing, but I didn't notice that as much.
First of all, I would say I would love to see some more of that up energy that we saw from last week.
And yet again, this song shows your diversity 'cause you have such a smooth, smooth tone.
So I thought it was a great performance.
I loved how y'all got into it.
I thought it was great.
Thank you.
Awesome.
Great feedback there.
So, Olivia, let's find out your position on the chart.
Okay.
(Robin) Aw! (Scattered boos) All right.
Jason and Olivia are in the bottom two, so you're in jeopardy.
(Mouths word) Bridget carrington, you are safe.
Go ahead.
Okay.
Sashay down.
Head to the lounge.
And next up, we have got Kelly taking the stage with Jordan Meredith, performing Joan jett's classic "I love rock 'n' roll.
" Jordan's managed to rise on the chart each week, but will she climb further to the top tonight? This is "duet" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets," where our theme tonight is party songs.
With only three more performances to go, Olivia and Jason are sitting in the bottom two and in danger of going home tonight.
Up next, it's Kelly and Jordan Meredith's turn.
Last week, Jordan hit her stride, and this week, she's looking to keep the momentum going and take her performance to the next level.
All right, so last week you did amazing, and I'm gonna force you to watch yourself be amazing (Laughs) Because it was a world of difference, like the judges said, like, your stage presence.
(Clears throat) And we're doing another fun song this week 'cause it's party week, and I want you to exude this.
So let's watch this.
(Groans) Wish I could be just a little less dramatic Listen! like a Kennedy when Camelot went down iflames leave it to me to be holding the matches when the fire trucks show up and there's nobody else to blame go and fix your makeup, girl Nice! That's so good! (Laughs) Run and hide your crazy and start actin' like a lady This past week, I felt really comfortable on stage, which is really weird 'cause usually it's nerve-racking to step out there.
Heart Are you kidding me?! That was so good! (Laughs) Knowing that it was literally, like, do-or-die I do well now or I could be going home helped me push myself.
I just I need that attitude in this song, too.
So I know you have it, so if you don't bring it I'm gonna kick your butt.
This week, Jordan and I are gonna perform Joan jett's "I love rock 'n' roll.
" 'Cause that's something about Joan jett.
She's so cool and just like, "whatever," and, like, you know, that's why she'd go, "ow!" In the middle of her song (Laughs) Like, 'cause she's like, "I can do it.
That's why I'm doing it.
" I'm a little nervous coming into this song.
I kinda set the bar high for myself, and I hope I can at least reach it if not exceed it.
(Piano playing "I love rock 'n' roll") (Harmonizing) I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah, me, singing I (Drops octave) I love That's gonna be tricky.
Yeah.
Do you wanna do that high one? (Chuckles) I can try.
It's not gonna Let's try it.
Let's try it.
It doesn't matter if you mess up.
It matters if you're selling the song, you know.
She's gotta really up her game even more um, especially since it's party week.
Come and take your time and dance with me Ow! I want that out of you.
I think I can take what I did from last week and amp it up even more this week.
I love rock 'n' roll It's the same stage.
They've seen me do it once, they can see me do it again and rock it.
Singing the Joan jett platinum single.
"I love rock 'n' roll," here's Kelly clarkson and her second duet partner Jordan Meredith.
I saw him dancing there by the record machine I knew he must've been about 17 the beat was going strong playing my favorite song and I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah, me I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah, me, singing I love rock 'n' roll put another dime in the jukebox, baby I love rock 'n' roll so come and take your time and dance with me Ow! He smiled so I got up and I asked for his name he said, "that don't matter, darlin'" "'cause it's all the same" said, "can I take you home" "where we can be alone?" and next we were moving on and he was with me, yeah, me and next we were moving on and he was with me, yeah, me, singing I love rock 'n' roll put another dime in the jukebox, baby I love rock 'n' roll so come and take your time and dance with me Ow! Said, "can I take you home" "where we can be alone?" and I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah, me I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah, me, singing I love rock 'n' roll put another dime in the jukebox, baby I love rock 'n' roll come and take your time and dance with me I love rock 'n' roll put another dime in the jukebox, baby I love rock 'n' roll so come and take your time and dance with me I love rock 'n' roll put another dime in the jukebox, baby I love rock 'n' roll so come and take your time and so come and take your time and come and take your time and dance with me (Cheering) (Quddus laughs) Okay.
Much better than my karaoke versions of that song, that's for sure.
(Laughs) Oh, well, good.
That's saying something, right? Yeah.
(Chuckles) So how did you think it went? Uh, good.
I was a little nervous 'cause I know, like, the bar was really raised last week for me.
Sure.
So I hope I did okay.
(Chuckles) I think you did okay.
I think you did okay.
All right, it's time to hear what our superstars thought of your performance.
Jennifer? I felt a little bit of that nervousness that you were talking about.
I felt a little reserve here and there, except there were moments, too, where you would, you know, burst out, where you gave us the "ow!" I can't do it but you can do it.
Ow! (Laughter) Um, I love that you were taking in the video, I was like, "please take the high one.
"Please let her take the high one.
Jordan, please take the high one.
" Yeah.
And so I was glad that you did that.
I thought it was really, really nice.
I loved the arrangement.
I would say, yeah, really, just the nerves were the only thing that I could see in comparison to last week now and knowing you can do.
Right.
Part of it could've also been the shoes.
But be comfortable.
Tell them they you don't wanna wear those if you don't wanna wear 'em.
I do.
(Jennifer) True.
Good advice.
Take it.
Thank you so much.
All right, Robin, what are you thinking? I did feel like last week, when you were, um, sultry and bluesy, that you got to show your strength, where this week, you know, rock 'n' roll is about angst.
It's about, uh, going against the system, and I didn't feel any anger or any tension It was fun.
But I-I did miss a little bit of that sultriness that you threw at me last week.
(Laughs) (Laughs) Mr.
John legend, what are you thinking? You know, I-I think she should just sing barefoot every time I agree! (Robin) Yeah.
Because last week, you just looked so (Jennifer) Comfy.
Comfortable, so happy, and this week, it was a little bit, you know, tied up a little bit, and I think it might've been the shoes.
And my only other issue is, actually, I felt like the chorus feels weird with a harmony.
The I love rock 'n' roll You wanted everybody in unison.
Yeah.
I felt like I wanted it the arrangement to be yeah, but y'all yelled at us when we did that on "stronger.
" (Laughs) Thank you.
(Jennifer speaks indistinctly) Now that we've heard from our superstars, it's time to see what they actually scored for you, see where you end up on our chart.
Jordan number 3.
You're safe.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
(Chuckles) Head on over to the lounge.
Jason and Olivia technically are still in jeopardy, but there's still a lot of show to go.
Coming up, we got John legend and meleana revealing their surprise song for one of our superstars.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets.
" The energy is off the chain in here tonight! Whoo! Our amateurs are singing some of the biggest party songs in music history.
Before the break, Jordan performed and landed at number three on the chart.
And with only two more performers to go, Olivia and Jason are sitting at the bottom and in danger of going home tonight.
Up next is John legend and meleana brown's turn to take the "Duets" stage.
But first, let's find out what secret John had up his sleeve for one of our superstars.
I got an idea that could very well impress the judges quite a lot Okay.
Especially one particular judge.
We had picked a song.
We felt like it might've not been dynamic enough.
And my manager gets this sly smile on his face and says, "what about this?" And pushes "play," and it's one of the superstars' songs.
And I'm like, "brilliant.
Let's do it.
" Do you think you can do it? Yes, yes, I can do it.
I can do it (Chuckles) As long as you think I can do it.
Yeah.
Well, we're gonna do it.
It's a hard song.
Okay.
Oh, my God.
John definitely surprised me with this song.
Just sing the chorus for me.
One, two, three, four, one, two.
If I had a concern, it would be learning how to rock out because I'm used to slow songs and kind of grooving a little bit.
But this one, you gotta just pump it up.
Do that first line, then go to this part.
This is a risk because one of the superstars is gonna know this song very well.
Hey, let's try it.
And I think it's gonna work.
(Singing scale) test, one, two, three, four I am a little worried (Sighs) About going home this week.
There's some things that I can't control, but there are things that I can control, and that's my performance.
Sounded really good.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Your voice sounds great up there.
All right.
Cool.
All right.
I think she's gonna be back on top with this song.
She's gonna wail, she's gonna hit those high notes, and we're gonna have a good time.
(Giggles) Let's do it.
(Kisses) Thank you.
Every week, we have to go into it like we could lose and get kicked off the show.
And if we don't go into it like that, we will lose and get kicked off the show.
It's gonna be hot.
(Chuckles) Yeah.
I'm excited.
Aha! Ooh, I love surprises! Singing a surprise song from one of our superstars, here's John legend and his duet partner meleana brown.
(Playing Kelly clarkson's "since u been gone") (Cheering) Here's the thing, we started off friends it was cool but it w all pretend yeah, yeah since you've been gone (Laughs) You dedicated, you took the time it wasn't long till I called you mine yeah, yeah since you've been gone unh and all you'd ever hear me say is how I pictured me with you that's all you'd ever hear me say but since you've been gone I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah thanks to you now I get what I want since you've been gone how can I put it? You put me on I even fell for that stupid love song yeah, yeah since you've been gone how come I never hear you say "I just wanna be with you"? I guess you never felt that way but since you've been gone I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah thanks to you now I get, I get what I want since you've been gone you had your chance, you blew it out of sight, out of mind shut your mouth, I just can't take it again and again and again and again Come on! Come on! (Cheering) Since you've been gone Come on! I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah thanks to you now I get you should know that I get I get what I want since you've been gone since you've been gone since you've been gone I harmonized! (Laughs) (Cheering) Oh, my God.
(Laughs) (Quddus) Oh, yeah! Oh, you guys Talk about taking it in your face, huh? I don't even know if they heard me.
Meleana Come on up.
Oh, wow! I totally harmonized with them at the end.
That was a really bold move.
It was pretty nerve-racking.
(Laughs) Come on.
That was a great job.
But you know what? I has so much fun up here.
I really had so much fun.
John wanted me to get out of that that slow mode and he wanted me to challenge myself, and this is the first time I ever sang a party song and I had a blast, so thank you for that.
And Kelly is putting in her score right now.
Sorry! I as so distracted.
And I am very curious about what you just put in that tablet.
I'm gonna that that's ballsy.
Like, I just loved it 'cause that's a hard song.
I remember when I first heard it, I was like, "no.
" My only thing is, girl, don't get me wrong if I were judging myself, I do the same thing.
You were a little pitchy in some places, just a little pitchy.
But, girl, come to my show, and I promise you I'm about pitchy throughout the whole thing.
(Laughs) It's a hard song to sing 'cause you're jumping up and down, you're running up the whole thing.
You performed the hell out of it.
It was good.
I loved I loved the surprise.
That was awesome.
(Laughs) That was good.
Thank you.
Must feel good to hear that.
Jennifer? I-if this is the first time you sang a party song, I wouldn't know it because you really have the energy.
You were getting into it.
You had some hair stuff going on.
Some sexy sexy, some lean in, some pull back.
Um, I agree with Kelly.
There was a little bit of pitchy.
Like on the first chorus, I heard you like, okay, let's reach up to it! And then by the second one, though, you were warmed into it.
But I was sitting up here, going, "please let it be my song.
Please let it be my song.
Please let it be.
" But (Laughs) That's next week.
Next week.
But it's cool.
It's cool.
I'm not upset.
No, I thought it was great.
I thought it was great.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Really good choice.
Robin, what are you thinking? I (Chuckles) I'm swimming in a barrel of emotion right now.
It is actually a little weird for me to hear John legend sing "since u been gone.
" (Laughs) I gotta be honest, you know what I mean? Now that I know you can do it, you have to sing it with me somewhere on the stage.
But John sang it great.
John sang John sounded great.
And the way that you came out of your shell, even though you started a little bit like, "what am I doing?" And then you gave it all over to to to the moment, and I'm really impressed with the way you gave it over.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah.
So all that was great to hear, but now it's what's really important.
What did they score? Let's have a look at where you are on the chart.
(Scattered boos) So you are in jeopardy.
Go head to the lounge.
Thank you very much, though.
Great performance.
With that rank, now we know that, Olivia, you are definitely in the bottom two this evening and will be singing for your life in our solo showdown.
Jason, you are safe.
When we come back, we got one final duet.
And later, one amateur will be going home.
Don't go anywhere.
This is "Duets" on abc.
(Cheering) Thank you, and welcome back to the "Duets" stage.
Now before the break, we found out that Jason is safe for the first time ever.
(Cheering) Olivia is in the bottom two and will be singing for her life in a matter of minutes.
And with only one performance left, meleana is in jeopardy of joining her.
But last up is Jennifer and her duet partner John glosson's turn.
(Woman) Whoo! John! And after a strong outing landed John in the number two spot last week, let's take a look at what party song he decided to take on this week.
Hi, babe.
Hi! How are you? Everybody knows John is a wonderful singer by this point.
With this song, "life is a highway" Mm-hmm.
I think it could be great for your voice.
My goal for this week is to show the world that he is fun.
I guess what I really like to sing the most, obviously, is, like, more ballad-y kind of Mm-hmm.
Okay.
You know, that kind of feel, because I feel like that's when I connect with the audience.
Party songs are probably not where I feel the most comfortable, but yet, I love the high energy stuff.
It just maybe takes a little bit more to get it out of me than what I am accustomed to.
You can do this, too.
You can't do a whole show of ballads.
You have to be able to do something upbeat and enjoy it so that you can have fun with the audience.
Okay, well, we can see how this goes.
So let's feel it out.
(Piano playing "life is a highway") Well, life's like a road you travel on it's one day here and the next day gone life is a highway I wanna ride it all night long Okay, here's what I wanna point out.
By the time we get to the chorus, it feels good.
Yeah.
So good.
The verse feels, like, slow and so dead.
(Laughs) I'm not happy with this song! Well (Laughs) I know.
So at first, we were a little apprehensive.
Kick us, little John! life is a highway And then we got into the band room, and it was just like, "whoo!" The whole thing blossomed.
Come ride with me to a distance shore I was having a blast, and so was he.
This fun and all this crazy and that, like Yeah, we got it.
I mean, I want you to get whatever it is that you feel, son, you do it.
Okay.
And I'll do it.
Okay.
(Chuckles) We got it.
This is a party song, so anybody that says anything about John's movements is a hater.
I mean, he's out there having fun on the stage.
I don't care who you are and how you move.
If you are having fun, and somebody has something to say against it? (Singsongy) Hater.
I'm rockin' my shorts off, guys and gals.
I definitely wanna show everyone that I have a lot more than just a ballad inside of me, that I can have fun and that I can entertain, too.
I've always wanted to do that.
All right.
Performing "life is a highway," here's Jennifer nettles and her last duet partner John glosson.
(Cheering) (Jennifer) Well, okay, then! (John) Everybody, come on! Yes! Well, life is a road you're traveling on it's one day here and the next day gone sometimes you win, sometimes you fail sometimes you turn your back to the wind we won't hesitate to break down the guarding gate there's not much time left today, yeah life is a highway I wanna ride it all night long all night long, yeah if you're going my way I wanna drive it all night long Whoo! (Shouts indistinctly) Through all these cities and all these towns it's in my blood, it's all around I love you now like I loved you then this is the road and these are the hands there's a world outside every darkened door where blues won't haunt you anymore where the brave and the free and the lovers soar come ride with me to a distant shore no load I can't hold the roads are rough, this I know I'll be there when the light comes in just tell 'em we're survivors life is a highway I wanna ride it all night long ooh, yeah if you're going my way I wanna drive it all night long yeah, yeah life is a highway I wanna ride it all night long ooh, yeah, yeah if you're going my way I wanna drive it all night long yeah, yeah life is a highway ooh, yeah, ooh Yeah! Yeah! (Cheering) Yeah! Ooh, hoo hoo hoo! Man! You got a rock star in ya! Ooh! Yeah! (Quddus and John g.
Laugh) Well, John, great performance, and now it seems like you're really getting close to Jennifer.
That must be a trip for you 'cause that's, like, your hometown hero, right? Exactly.
Yes.
That could just be all the the pelvic thrusting I'm doing.
That could just be that.
But I did that for Robin.
Right on.
(Laughs) All right, it's time to hear from our superstars.
Kelly? Love what you said.
You can't sing a whole show of ballads.
And I think she picked the perfect song for you to sing.
Mm-hmm.
And and this is what I this is what I wanna say.
The difference between and, J.
Rome, I'm gonna say it to you and I love you, man.
I love you, baby, okay? I'm not saying this to to hurt him at all.
But I felt you.
I really wanna make sure that everybody's being them, and that was you and it was fast and it was great and you're having a good time, and you came down here and gave us a little dance, and it was good.
(Speaks indistinctly) Thank you.
Thank you, Kelly.
Robin? What you got to say? I honestly feel like your voice is so good, you just don't have to try as hard physically.
I-I would just love to just he ain't trying! He's doing! Okay.
Hey (John l.
Laughing) Ah! Listen, John is my boy, but honestly, man, when you got a voice like that like, John doesn't dance a lot.
I don't try to dance a lot.
I do not.
I'm not good at it.
(Laughs) (Kelly) I don't dance.
Yeah, I mean, all I'm saying no, I hey, the girls are just looking at me crazy right now.
No, no.
I'm not disagreeing with you.
I'm just saying I don't dance either.
I'm not right.
So I'm like I jump up and down.
When you have a voice like that, you just don't even have to do too much.
I would just want (Stammers) I would come to to hear you sing alone every time and just embody that that swagger.
Like, if you just put that swagger that your voice has into your physical nature, you're unstoppable.
That's what I would say.
Thank you, Robin.
Thank you.
You were in danger for a minute there.
(Laughs) All right, John, what are you thinking? I thought you were great.
I actually didn't mind him running around, having a good time, you know.
I thought it worked, and, uh, your voice always sounds great.
Don't pull the mic away when you do your big notes, 'cause I actually wanna hear you sing the big notes.
That's the Southern gospel in me.
I'm like the mic police on this show.
(Laughs) But I-I just wanna make sure you're heard 'cause you sound great.
Absolutely.
That's a consensus.
So now we've heard from the superstars.
The scores are locked in.
It's time to reveal the final chart of the night, where our superstars' last vote will determine who is going to face off, amateur against amateur, in a solo showdown.
John, let's find out your position.
(Cheering) You're safe tonight.
Meleana and Olivia are the bottom two.
All right, so when we come back, meleana and Olivia sing for their lives in our solo showdown, with one of them leaving us tonight.
You won't wanna miss this.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets.
" Now before the break, our superstars revealed that meleana and Olivia are the bottom two on our "Duets" chart.
So right now, it all comes down to this moment.
They are about to sing in our solo showdown.
Each one will sing their heart out a a, no band, no backup with everything on the line.
It's just them and a microphone.
Singing for life, this is meleana brown.
(Cheering) A few stolen moments is all that we share you have your family and they need you there though I've tried to resist being last on your list but ain't no other man gonna do 'cause I'm saving all my love yes, I'm saving all my love I'm saving all my love for you (Cheers and applause) And now singing for her life Olivia chisholm.
(Cheering) Turn down the lights turn down the bed turn down these voices inside my head lay down with me tell me no lies just hold me close don't patronize don't patronize don't patronize 'cause I can't make you love me no you can't make your heart feel something it won't here in the dark in these final hours I will lay down my heart and feel the power if you won't no, you won't Thank you.
(Chuckles) (Cheering) Thank you, ladies.
Thank you.
Beautiful.
All right, for the last time tonight, let's hear what our superstars thought of those performances.
Robin.
Both of you girls are, uh, so beautiful and so spirited and you guys have beautiful smiles and great voices.
Listen, this is just the beginning of your career and, uh, you never give up on your dreams.
Okay.
John? They were both beautiful.
I thought that was a great way to showcase your vocal ability.
And, uh, I don't envy you.
I've never had to stand in front of anybody and do this (Chuckles) To save my career.
This is this is a tough thing, so, uh, thank you.
I have.
It's hard.
(Laughter) It's hella hard.
I mean, there are a lot of famous people y'all hear on the radio that cannot stand up there and sing a song a capella and stay on key.
(Robin) Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Amen.
Okay.
So But what I'm saying, though, is I think what y'all should both know, too, you both have completely different voices.
We're voting on apples and oranges right now.
So it's like, I just want you both to know you've done a beautiful job.
And I get it.
That's hard, and you both did it.
Jennifer? Both of you have a place on stage, so regardless of what happens, I think you are both fantastic, and I can't wait to see what you're gonna do next because it's really great.
All right.
Well, as for right now, all four superstars are gonna be entering a final secret score for each ofour amateurs here.
Our superstars have officially locked in their scores, and the results are in.
The amateur who will be leaving us tonight is Meleana.
(Cheering) That means you're safe, Olivia.
Congratulations, Olivia.
Thank you.
Head over to the lounge.
You're safe for another week.
(Quddus) Come on up here.
(Meleana speaks indistinctly) You did good.
You did really good, sweetheart.
Thank you.
Really good.
I'm proud of you.
John, I know you got some stuff you wanna say to her.
Oh, she's wonderful.
She came in at the last minute.
You know, stood in line with all these other auditioners.
And we picked her because we thought she was beautiful and wonderful and had a great voice and had a lot to offer the show.
And I don't regret it for a minute.
Oh, she definitely delivered.
Thank you.
Is there anything you wanna say to John or to our superstars? Thank you so much for for having me here.
It's such a blessing to be here.
Thank you for this opportunity.
Such a pleasure having you on the show.
Thank you so much.
You guys can head to the lounge.
We've got ourselves a competition, folks.
With six amateurs left, the Duets are just heating up.
Thank you, guys, for watching, and thank you to John beasley and the "Duets" band.
