Kevin Hart: Don't F**k This Up (2019) s01e04 Episode Script

Bulletproof

Having the moment of self-evaluation, I realize a chink in the armor.
I'm a firm believer of practice what you preach, and I'm always preaching to Boss about what we are, what we can be, what we have, why we need to be smart and always looking at the bigger picture.
I acted as an ignorant ass who was willing to jeopardize everything he worked for because you got drunk, because you had an argument, because it was testosterone in the air.
If that situation between he and I had escalated more, when we got off that plane, me and Boss would have been arrested.
Luckily, nobody was arrested.
You know, the cops just wanted to make sure everybody was okay.
But these are the moments where you realize that you're nowhere near where you need to be.
So that road to becoming the billionaire or the mogul, it's a long road, man.
It's a long road.
It's a long fucking road.
And you can think you got it all together, and like that, something stupid can happen that can take it all away.
That's what yesterday was.
So, I'll read you guys a text that I sent out.
"I'm wrong.
I apologize.
That was the corniest and most disrespectful thing that I've ever done or been a part of.
I'm gonna check myself.
" "did what he did.
" "out on y'all.
'Cause I promised you it was my job to lead.
Yesterday, I failed in my job.
I will get my shit together, and I will do better.
" You just would not stop.
- Once again - You just kept on going.
I just didn't understand where it came from.
That was my issue.
Like, y'all are supposed to be better than that.
Especially you and Boss.
You guys are really close.
I was so angry.
That's what was so disappointing for me.
I was really disappointed in myself.
I've never gauged success based on money, right? I've always gauged success based on the ability to wake up with the willingness to create and feel like you're working towards a goal.
And I value what he has put on the line for all of us.
And so my whole thing is like, I wake up every day with that on my mind.
I'm gonna fucking make something good of everything, every opportunity that I can.
I'm a serial entrepreneur.
I wanna pursue.
I wanna go.
I'm gonna show you I'm a fucking hunter, and we're going to gather together, you know what I mean? And I think that's why I was really hurt about the things that were said.
Kev has a lot of shit he's dealing with, emotions with different people, so I don't fault him for his actions.
We're brothers, and we've done so much, from magazines, to his Nike deal, to the Chase deal, owning a fitness equipment company.
And that's just, like, the beginning.
That's why we woke up that morning and we were able to go, "That was stupid.
We got too much shit going on.
" How are you doing? I would come in closer, but I still smell like ass.
How are you? Because of Boss's dedication to me, I've attached him to any and everything I do on the fitness front.
The world of fitness is so big that we've tapped into it at the highest level.
I got a phone call saying, "Hey, would there be any interest to Kev to go do a run with the Chase Corporate Challenge?" And I went back to Ariel and the team and just kind of really started to work through how we can make something more impactful.
They needed a voice, right, that could speak to people in lower-income areas.
So that's the key about this partnership, is to get people to become more financially conscious and financially healthy.
Let's talk about what the mission is.
What's gonna You asked me before he came: impact.
When you think about financial fitness, I think what's so exciting about what we're talking about is we can help, you know, so many people get healthy, - period.
- Yeah, period.
You know, and financial and physical, it all goes hand in hand because it'll make people feel so good, - it'll lighten their load.
- Yeah.
Having physical fitness as a diving board that puts you in a position to talk about fitness within financial growth as well.
Hey, man.
Yeah, you got a dope-ass training session with myself and Boss.
But afterwards, guys, I wanna talk to y'all for an hour.
I wanna talk money.
I wanna talk real life.
I want you younger people to understand why it's important to get it now and not wait till later.
So many people don't make it back from later.
The initial idea was just for Kev to be a part of corporate challenge, and so we took this idea that was very I thought, was simple, and we kind of made it a bigger story.
I'm coming to you.
I don't want y'all to do what I did.
Let me show y'all where I'm from.
Here's a slide.
This is where I grew up.
See that right there? That's where we lived.
My mom made this work right here.
I was here for 17 years.
And we were excited about when I got my first real apartment, where I thought it was gonna be great because I got my first job.
I assumed that the money from this first job was gonna last me forever.
But I had no idea about the tax that they take out your check.
So I'm in this, like, debt, debt, debt, debt, debt.
No money.
You know, I did Soul Plane at the time.
The perception of what people may think I am, I'm nowhere near.
All right.
Reality hit.
Jobs aren't coming in.
It wasn't until About Last Night, Wedding Ringer and then the tour after that I not only got ahead, straightened up my credit and everything, I said, "Okay.
From now on, I need to understand.
" At the end of the day, you gotta connect, and they are able to see someone that looks like them.
- Yeah.
- And not just look like them, but understand their story.
And so having someone like you that they can see - and talk to them in a real way.
- And gives people hope.
- Yes! - 'Cause to understand where you are doesn't have to be where you live.
- Yes! - You know what I mean? Great meeting.
Great.
Come on.
Boss has done a great job.
Boss put all of this stuff together that started with his conversation.
This is dope.
Today is a good day.
Now I gotta get dressed 'cause I got a show in one hour.
Yep.
That mean I got time to go take a shit, shower, and then walk back out the door.
Go me.
Goddamn it! Take my ass to bed.
The deal with Chase, it makes me realize how far I've come.
When you come from where I've come from, you're quote, unquote, written off to a certain degree.
You're not suppose to make it, you know.
When you get put in the position to change that mindset, you jump at it.
And I take that and I apply it to my business.
Hartbeat Productions was my first major step into me taking control of my career.
So I gotta put the same time and energy that I put into my craft into my business.
He knows that just doing, say, stand-up or just acting, is not going to make you a mogul or a billionaire.
You have to diversify yourself.
There's a false reality.
I'll be damned if I'm not going to constantly think to myself about when I didn't know where I was gonna eat.
When I had no money to get new sneakers.
I remember.
I'm the guy that walks around in fear of shit not being good.
I'll start by saying when I know that I have the ace of spades in my back pocket of Will Smith, who's gonna play a cameo and pop up in the movie.
Now I'm able to go out, and I'm able to call on "Hey, man.
Is there any way, Chris, that you can do x, y and z?" "Hey, Foxx.
Can you come play in this scene for me?" "Hey, man.
Sam, is there any way I could get you to play in this scene?" "Denzel," if we get lucky and he sees all parties involved, "can you play in this scene?" We can make the movie big.
I think Idris would be an amazing casting for our bad guy.
And having Chadwick guaranteed, that gives me something that's solid as I'm going to talk.
It makes it concrete.
And that's how I'm going to start landing these other big names.
Perfect.
Appreciate you, guys.
Thank you.
So, let me tell you why I was like, "Dude, I gotta get to you," once I found out that you were out here.
So, right now we are We've been actively developing Uptown Saturday Night.
I think that this is my opportunity to have this generation's version of what Harlem Nights was, you know.
Like, to put those amazing faces in a movie and especially to have it, you know, come from the black perspective.
This could be incredible.
This is such a great opportunity, and, you know, truth of the matter is the film is, historically, you know, respected amongst our culture, without a doubt, whether it was good or not.
It was one of those films It was seminal because it had that massive cast.
I mean, I would be honored to be a part of this, I'll be honest.
This is great, man.
These are the moments that you work hard for.
It's something I don't take for granted.
- I love you, dude.
- But at the same time, I don't wanna be successful by myself.
The dream has always been to bring people up with me.
I want my guys to share this level of success with me.
Be ready in five? - I'm coming out now.
- Okay.
Since I know I need to be out.
Can you go talk to your director and make sure we're actually shooting, they don't do a bunch of repo-ing like we always do? - I don't know if they did last time.
- They did last time.
You might be right.
We just so off - Can you just go do that? - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Goddamn! - We are so off.
Let's go.
- Hey, guys.
- Stepping out.
Once again, just have a good time.
Enjoy yourself and have a good time.
Dustin! Dustin! Don't fuck this up.
I mean in a spiritual way, though.
I have a show on Comedy Central, and it's called Hart of the City, where we go to different cities and we find untapped talent, new faces, and give them their debut on national television.
There's a roundtable.
Kevin will sit with the comedians and they just talk comedy.
He'll give them some advice and talk to them about their stories and their struggles.
And what you find out in that is that we're all the same.
The struggle as a comedian is the same.
Even though Kevin has gotten to that pinnacle, his struggle to get there is the same thing that everybody else is going through.
Comedy has given so much to us, I just feel it's only right to give back to it.
Joey brought that idea to me.
I told Joey I loved it.
And Hart of the City became an amazing success, you know.
Season three! And I credit that to Joey.
I'm really looking at getting an Emmy.
I'm probably not gonna get an Emmy, but it's the thought that counts.
- Ready? - I got talent in position.
All right, then.
Let's go.
Give me your janky promoter story.
I almost hate to say it, but the worst one I ever had I did at a black church.
Okay.
It's already funny.
That is fucking gold right there.
- Great! - Cut.
What I respect the most about Joey is that Joey was very adamant about proving to me what he was capable of.
Joey has the potential to be an amazing show runner in Hollywood.
Joey, where's the cards? I don't have a card.
- I need a card.
- I'll send somebody to get some.
Leslie! We gotta wait 'cause Joey don't give me the card.
The reason why I choose to be hard on Joey is not just to give Joey shit.
- It's so he doesn't get comfortable.
- My bad.
It's easy to get comfortable when you've got a show on air.
But that show get canceled, you don't wanna be like, "Oh, fuck.
What am I gonna do now?" And that's the only thing that I want Joey to realize.
Thank God I'm your friend 'cause if this was a real set, I would've stormed the fuck off.
I would've stormed the fuck off.
Do you hear me? I don't want that.
This whole production would be shit because of your attitude.
Joey! I wanna say one more thing to you.
Leslie, can you come here, too, please? We are a unit.
- Okay? - Yes, sir.
Ultimately, I am grooming this unit for the next level.
If you guys want more tiers, you gotta deal with talent like this.
This isn't Kevin Hart talking to you.
This is asshole actor.
- I'm asshole actor.
- Okay.
- Okay? Leslie, do you understand? - I understand completely.
Joey, you're gonna have to deal with this guy one day.
How will you handle the pressure? I'm probably gonna go back to being a school teacher So you wanna go back to sarcastic producer? - No, I don't.
- Harry, car keys, please.
- No, sir.
That's - Harry, car keys, please.
You need to learn a lesson.
Come on, Harry.
Let's go.
Guys, I was just - You know, Joey - Guys, I was trying to I really hope you get it one day, man.
I really hope you get it one day.
But I was just trying to, like, be hot.
- Come on, Harry.
- Amazing! The host is what's fucking the show up.
I hate him.
All right.
Fuck it.
Boy, I hope he fall.
Look at Joey! Look! Look at Joey! He thought I left! He thought I left! Hold the door.
My pants are wet! Give me my Night School umbrella back.
Since I started making movies, I dreamt of producing a movie through my own production company.
Night School was officially my first movie underneath my Hartbeat Productions umbrella.
Hello, everybody.
Welcome.
Welcome to New York.
Also, welcome to an amazing moment where you can see Kevin Hart talk about his movie.
Go see Night School.
Everything that I'm trying to do at Hartbeat, it depends on the success of Night School and Night School's opening weekend.
When it's not just you and it's a brand, Night School succeeding was a must for me.
I mean, I'm throwing the kitchen sink at it.
I'm doing everything that I possibly can to promote and market this movie leading up to the premiere.
Right now, we're talking about something that was built from the ground up that I got to witness, that I got to be a part of.
And right now the conversations of being a partner to studios instead of a work for hire is a real one, so it's an exciting time for me.
The important thing about making a movie, especially now, is people identifying with the content.
And in this case, we wanna embrace second chances.
It's okay to have struggles - because we all don't get it right.
- No.
I didn't.
I'm an example of that.
The writers of Night School.
One, two, three.
This is the first time that I've been through the press junkets since my name is on there.
We're gonna enjoy all of this and soak it all in.
Night School is my first film writing credit.
Writing jokes helped me become a writer in his production company.
So when he started Hartbeat Productions, it was only natural that me and Joey just switch over and start trying to write scripts.
I guess you could say this is like our establishing moment, but what I don't do is take credit and, you know, take the people that helped make this movie become a reality and throw them to the side.
People that have helped me get to the successful point that I've gotten to now.
I went from the guy that was on his way out Not to give up comedy probably, but I was going home.
Like, I'm gonna go home.
Um, I have nothing.
And you fast forward this clock, and, um I have a show that's been on the air for three seasons.
It could possibly go international.
Just sold a show to Nickelodeon.
We've got two more that could really pop off and jump.
I've been all over the world three times.
That is where I've come from, and that all happened from Kev.
These are people who ultimately invested in me and, in return, I invested back in them.
But if I had failed miserably I not only let down myself, I let down my people.
Are we almost done? This is all loaners 'cause I pays for nothing.
I borrow everything 'cause I want my money to go into real things like land 'cause I'm trying to create generational wealth.
I don't have no generations after me just yet, but I will though.
I will.
Somebody gonna try to get me pregnant, I know it.
- Hi.
What's your name? - Hello.
I'm Rob.
- How you doing? - Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
And how many baby mamas you got? - Kevin, we've met before.
- Yes.
But Tiffany, we've never met.
I've wanted to meet you for a long time.
- You're amazing.
- Okay.
Well, I'm free for dinner tonight.
The game's called Playground Problems.
- So you want a sexy glance? - No, Tiff.
These are kids! - Because I ain't shave these at all.
- Okay, Tiffany.
The first word is "hello.
" Hello.
Sound like his regular voice.
This is Kevin on a happy day.
Under the sun.
Clouds.
- Looks like a little monkey.
- I wanted to ask, first of all, if you were gonna teach something, what would it be? A big thing within our community, within the African-American community A lot of the lack of things that we don't have or don't know - is because of the knowledge, you know.
- Hm-mm.
I would wanna put myself in an educational situation - where I could share that story - You should teach people how to create generational wealth.
There you go.
I would be very good at that.
That's why I'm so determined to make it, to become a billionaire.
To show that, from the ground up, without anything, I attained this, and I attained this by sheer will and determination.
- And now that I've got it - I just want it to be a 285-million year.
- Give back.
I'm gonna get there.
- $285 million.
I'm good right there.
I'll get to the billion, then I'll change the world.
There's just so much that you can do when you have that.
My imprint will be left on the world in a major way.
- Oh! You're looking good.
- Why do you have a hat on, Jimmy? - Oh, my gosh! - You don't have to wear - His kids brought it! - You don't need a hat.
Why do you have a birthday hat on? Dude, I'm wearing a bolo tie, and I have a birthday hat on.
Happy fucking birthday, man.
Happy birthday! This is the biggest show ever.
It really is our biggest show ever, dude.
I'm so happy you're here.
Let's talk about Night School.
I have to tell you about this.
- You, Tiffany Haddish, comedy dream team.
- Yes.
You get together.
What is the movie about? The movie is about second chances.
First of all, this is the first movie that was done underneath my production company, Hartbeat Productions.
We're gonna keep this nice and still.
Just like that.
Perfect.
You're good.
So just keep that one still.
This is how black people die in a horror movie.
What's happening, Jimmy? Here we go.
Here he goes.
- Shit! - Yes! - Robert Irwin, everybody.
- Jimmy, get it! Jimmy, get it! Jimmy, get it! We'll be right back.
Stick around, everybody.
Good job! - That was unbelievable.
- My guy.
That was That was unbelievable.
Man, I haven't laughed that hard in so long.
Thank you, buddy.
Come back whenever, whenever, whenever.
No one works this hard, man.
You were just great.
Thank you for putting the work in.
I'll see you in January.
I gotta promote the drama.
I'm sorry, we're booked that week, but thank you.
Love you, man.
You are at this stratosphere of fame and success that's It's rare amongst the rare.
You know, it's like David Goggins said: "You are uncommon amongst uncommon men.
" I will be a hundred percent honest and say I'm comfortable with the understanding of hard work brings great rewards.
This is a reminder of the hard work and dedication that I put in to everything that I've done.
I'm not content because I know where I came from, and I don't ever wanna go back.
For today, Night School happens.
Night School has been in the making for maybe two years, and here we are.
We can't kiss.
No, air kiss.
- Oops! Earring.
- No, do on this side.
- Get closer.
- Right here.
Air.
Get close.
I'm not gonna do it, I promise.
- Ah! - No, I would rather you do it here.
Let me see it.
Hey, hey, hey.
Oh, my God! Night School.
We're super excited about it.
It stars so many great people.
For everybody involved at Hartbeat, it's an exciting moment.
What drives you to keep working so hard? Because you're so successful already.
I would say I'm my own competition, and I truly feel like the sky's the limit.
You get one life, and it's our job to make the most out of that one life.
So I work so hard simply because, when it's all said and done, I wanna look back, and I wanna know that I got the most out of my life.
Look at you.
Let me look at you.
I like the hair and everything.
Get in the middle, Tiff.
Get out of here, Tiffany! Get out of here! I wanna thank you guys for coming.
Guys and girls.
This is an amazing crowd.
I think we should pray for the movie.
Okay, no.
Well, Tiff, that's I don't think we need - Heavenly father, we approach your throne.
- Okay, bow your heads.
In your son's name, we wanna thank you for this opportunity to share our talents with the world.
- I hope it brings joy and happiness - Don't make it a long one, Tiff.
And just make sure everybody looks good and Kevin looks tall.
Okay.
All right.
This is All these things we ask in your son's name, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Amen, amen.
Enjoy Night School.
Tiffany, don't fall.
The premiere couldn't have gone better.
You're seeing everybody that had a hand in making this movie.
It immediately just makes you think, "It's not an 'I' thing.
It's a 'we' thing.
" - Thank you.
Looking good.
- It was great.
How are you? Stop it, neighbor.
Almost two years of work put in.
The reaction was good.
People laughed.
Now it's time for the rest of the world to hear.
Pretty psyched right now.
We started with a blank sheet of paper and an idea, and you see it materialize on screen.
It's a great feeling.
- Damn, man.
- Somewhere on your goddamn self.
- Good to see you.
- Keep giving that shit.
It's gonna do really well.
Hartbeat Productions was my wake-up call to me.
If I do this correctly, I could then go on to do so much for other people.
This is a legacy.
We started from the bottom, and now we're here.
I never get good reviews.
When it comes to movies, I've never I've never gotten a good review.
So if you fall into that world of caring, then you fucking you lose.
You get caught up into shit that you have no control over.
People love to have an opinion.
You gotta understand that.
People love it.
They love to have an opinion.
Every movie that I did that has gotten trashed by critics have gotten A-plus cinema scores from the fans.
So, ultimately, you just let the talkers talk.
Let them talk.
There's nothing bad about it.
Go ahead, talk.
Bulletproof.
Armor.
Armor.
Amazing armor on.
I don't allow shit to get through my armor.
The people are what's important, not the critics.
I've never performed or done things for the critics or for their approval.
It's always been about the audience, and, I mean, even in stand-up comedy, I can say that I've prided myself on giving the audiences what they want.
It's just in the audiences' hands.
If they receive and respond to the movie, you'll know.
If they don't, you'll know.
Wow! Wow! Night School is at $99.
4 million after this weekend, bro.
It's cool.
Huge, man.
That means next week, we'll hit the hundred.
I sent one guy that gave me these awful reviews an $8,000 bottle of wine.
It was after Get Hard.
Get Hard opened up, I think it did, like, $33, $35 million opening weekend, which was great.
The reporter that was like, "This movie is just" I sent him a standy of me and an $8,000 bottle of wine.
I said, "The back end from this movie was really good, so I wanted to share my success with you and your great reviews.
" He never wrote me back but I know he got it because I messengered it to his office.
King Petty.
Petty LaBelle is what they call me.
Petty LaBelle.
