My wives-- they had to suffer.
The DNA's gonna be your key piece of evidence.
We got our work cut out for us.
Did Eugenie have a boyfriend? She said that she was dating a guy called Robert.
Did she say anything particular about Robert? We were helping her get ready for a date with Robert, and that was the night before she went missing.
The taxi company-- the actual driver was the owner.
Ali Fini's his name.
He could've been one of the last people that would see her.
Do you ever remember picking her up? I don't.
How many employees you think you had? I had, uh, Robert We've got to get Robert and we got to get him now.
You talk to the ex -husband yet? I think he's dodging us.
We giving him his shot, then we gonna take ours.
Tell my story when I'm dead Place a gravestone at my head Friend, would you do that for me? Tell my story, would you please? I think there's a possibility that Eugenie's killer could have been her lover.
Relationships go bad-- bad breakup, "can't stand to see you with sebody else.
" "If I can't have you, nobody else can, so I'm gonna kill you.
" Going from "I do" to "I hope you die and rot" is more common than most people think.
This case could get really interesting.
It's unfolding.
I know.
Each and every day.
I wish I'd have been on it when it was, like, hot though.
We found out that Eugenie was dating a guy by the name of Robert.
We were helping her get ready for a date with Robert-- that was the night before she went missing.
How many employees you think you had? I had, uh, Robert.
Did we notice what kind of history Robert had? '95-- contempt of URT.
'95-- theft.
Was he having a relationship with her? That's a big question.
If this Robert guy was in a relationship with Eugenie, that's a guy you want to LK to.
That's somebody you want to sit across from.
Murder doesn't happen in a vacuum.
Somebody knows something.
Sheriff's office! Sheriff's office! I'm gonna a catch a neighbour or two.
I don't hear nobody.
I just need to know if you know anything about your neighbor-- not this trailer here.
There's two doors down a Mr.
Robert barber.
No, ma'am.
We're trying to figure out who lives in the house where you see the black Tahoe is parked.
That would be Robert barber.
How long has he been living there? Um probably six months, maybe.
The mini blinds are cracked.
Might be in there watching us right now.
Two things happen in Ariminal's mind when police approach him.
Fight or flight, if they're guilty of something.
Want to stake it out and see if we can catch Robert before he heads out to work? Right.
Hello? Hey, major.
I'm about to take off today, if you don't mind.
I got some important things I got to take care of that I've been putting off.
I understand.
You know, lately I ain't been feeling too good.
And I don't want to tell everybody else over there that's working this case with me because I want them to focus on solving Eugenie's murder.
Y'all working on the field today? Yeah, Robert barber.
Matter of fact, I got Aubrey working on that right now, trying to locate him.
This is my case, but I want Aubrey to take a strong, strong, lead on it.
But if I'm not here, I know I want to leave it to someone that I know is gonna have the same heart and the same willpower as I do, and I think that's Aubrey.
When you're doing surveillance, you've got to be heightened of your surroundings.
I mean, you're going after this guy who could've possibly killed somebody-- hit them in the head, cracked their skull open with some blunt object.
You don't ever want to gets potted, because if they are guilty, next thing you know they're going in the wind.
Hello, sergeant Laplace? Hey, it's detective Bradford.
I was wondering if there's any way that you guys can send out a uniform officer for backup, so we can try to make some contact.
There's different reasons we bring local law enforcement in when we're outside of our jurisdiction.
In case things go bad, we've got representation there.
Kid coming out, going to school.
Hey, you ready? Let's do it now.
Let's roll with it.
Hey, miss.
My name's detective St.
Angelo.
I'm looking for Mr.
Robert.
I need to talk to him about a case that I'm working.
Okay? I have a court order for him to talk to me.
- So he can't refuse.
- Okay.
If he does refuse, he ' ll be arrested, so I don't want to arrest him.
- He's on the road.
- What's he driving? You have a contact phone number for him? We confirmed barber drives a semi truck.
Not quite sure if he's ducking us at this point, but there's no getting away from us now.
We're gonna get him.
Mr.
Robert, hello.
I'm with the Iberville sheriff's office.
I have some questions for you.
Okay.
Oh, man.
Where you at right now, boss? There he is.
What is this pertaining to? Well, I don't want to talk too much right here, 'cause I want to get to my office and I want to sit down in a real room.
Can you give some highlights to it? Well, it's about the Fini cab company you used to work for.
Okay.
That's the best I can give you right now.
Main thing is, just, you know, be straight with us, you know? Yeah.
'Cause we know a lot, already.
Make sense? Everybody holds secrets.
Some people have secrets deeper than, Arker than canyons beneath the ocean.
It's just a matter of finding the right person and the right secret.
Put your chest right here.
Roll your shoulders forward.
Hold your breath.
Don't breathe.
Eight, nine years ago, I was Well, I was actually talking to my sheriff.
He was always picking on me about "when's the last time you had a physical, son? When's the last time you went to the doctor?" So I went.
In fact, I went on, I think, a Friday, and I ca back to work.
And my phone went off.
Said, "well, we seen something in your X-ray.
" That's when I was told that I had kidney cancer.
Then I went home and I told my wife I had it.
We both sat on the couch and had a long cry.
I'm sitting at the doctor's office with ro-ro.
He has a check-up.
It's Kobi.
Happy Birthday to Rodie Happy Birthday to Rodie Thank you Ko-bi.
Ended up going in surgery and the cancer moved from my kidney into my adrenal gland and then it started going towards my back.
So we cut it all out.
I lost my left kidney.
- I'm gonna get your blood.
- Okay.
Is pent 30 years in law enforcement, but I ended up with cancer, and that slowed me down a lot.
That's what made me retire.
Just wanted to go over everything with you.
As you know, we've got the report back from the ct scan.
It showed one small area on your remaining kidney that's a bit of a concern.
There's what we refer to as a small enhancing Les I on.
We have to look into this further.
So what we're gonna do is we're gonna schedule an MRI.
He seems pretty nervous.
Let's go at him and see what he got to tell us.
- All right.
- See what he got to say.
I read people well.
It's a gift.
Look at people, watch their carotid artery, see if it pulsates.
Pay attention to their lips-- if it quivers when they talk to you.
Some people say I've got a sixth sense.
Something's really perturbing me on this case right now-- the ex-husband.
I want the son of a bitch.
I want to put our hands on him.
We were helping her get ready for a date with Robert.
That was the night before she went missing.
If you know her, you know her.
Do you remember her? I'm gonna tell you this-- she told her friend that you and her was having sex.
True or false? It's totally possible that you could come across a suspect that straight-up lied the whole time.
But at the end of the day, we need the DNA to confirm or deny.
Where's Rodie at? He's all right.
He's okay.
Matter of fact, let me call him right now.
Major? Rodie, uh, just giving you a little heads -up-- we just finished interviewing barber.
Having spoke to him, I don't think this guy has a clue what's going on in this case.
This is your baby.
Where you want to go now? All right.
Well, come see me when you get in the office.
All right, buddy.
You know I ain't got but one kidney anyway.
So what I'm supposed to do? Sit home and [Bleep.]
worry about it? I can't do that.
I got to go ahead and solve this case.
I need to talk to you.
All right.
Weeks ago, we met this guy, talked to him, found out a tremendous amount of information involving the victim.
Remember her face? Remember seeing her on TV? Actually, I put the young lady's fence U you talking about putting up a fence at the deceased victim we talking about's residence? Off of Stanford-- is that correct? I put her fence up.
The night we went out there to meet him, it was a key point in the start of this investigation.
He knows the criminals.
I don't.
So I'm dying to hear what he got to say.
- He's here.
- He is? He's here, y'all.
Have a seat right here.
Mike, I appreciate you coming.
We understand that you had some information that could possibly help us in this case.
Then you can go ahead.
The lady's house you was working at-- she was murdered right? Did you ever see the lady that lived there? Robert.
About how old was Robert about that time, Mike? 40 - something.
So he's 60-ish.
Did you ever see her on your establishment? I don't remember her.
I don't remember her.
Did she say how long she was dating this guy? I just remember that they were gonna have another date at the Alligator Bar.
Did Robert come on to Eugenie? I mean, did he try to rap with her? Describe what he looked like-- your boss.
What? What? What's wrong? Robert got some skeletons in his closet? It's cool.
Okay.
What, buddy? Women and what he'd do to them? Something? What? No, come on.
Please.
I want to hear it.
It's important for me and Aubrey.
All right.
What he said? Come one, Mike.
Let's let this lady rest in peace.
Help us try to-- it'd help us a lot.
You don't? This is good.
This guy's telling the truth.
You can't make up a story like that.
What he said about Eugenie? Well, we got to figure out who that Robert is now.
We need to call his employer.
I think that they should have records from back then.
They got to have a record of that employee.
We'll find out.
That's gonna be our job.
We gonna find out.
One way or the other.
Some blond-headed gal, she walked up to him, she said, "I been fighting with my husband.
I want to have sex.
" He's my wife's cousin.
Where is he now? Honestly You don't? He said that Robert used to frequent the Alligator Bar.
That's right down the street from Eugenie.
Yeah.
Up from where the dump site was.
Seems that Alligator Bar is coming more and more into the story.
Back in 1997, that location was a perfect location if you were in the business of dropping bodies off.
You could go back in on a Saturday in the daytime and not see one vehicle.
So we got to find Robert.
Whoever Robert is.
We gonna find out.
Where we going form here? This Hagan Fence Company, that's been in business a long time.
His boss still owns the company.
He said a Mr.
forest? When you get a case like this that's 18 years old and you get a lead, you take that lead and you run with it as far as you can.
How about if one of those male sperm profiles would come back to a Robert? That would be interesting.
That would be very interesting.
This is Aubrey St.
Angelo.
I'm a detective with the sheriff's office.
I'm working a case where an individual who used to work for you guys back in the early '90s, he mentioned Mr.
forest could give me the name of the individual I was inquiring about.
Does he work there? Is it some way I could speak with him? Back in '97, there was a lady who was found murdered and she was dumped in our parish.
Well, one of the names we came across was a guy by the name of Robert who worked for the Fence Company.
I know Robert.
Worked for me several years-- I don't have specific numbers-- worked for me quite a while.
Last name? I have no idea.
It was quite a while back.
Um You have a record of when they worked? I don't anymore.
We had a lot of records destroyed-- some flooding at our old office.
Did he have a temper? Did you ever see him go in a rage, or get aggravated? Robert was a drinker.
I knew that.
Didn't know much about his personal life.
Had any friends? Yeah.
He had one friend in particular.
They worked together for a time-- Mark Estes.
- With you, here? - Yeah.
Yeah.
They worked on the same crew for a time.
You feel like they were-- they were tight? I think they were pretty close.
They were pretty close, yeah.
Mark Estes So we have two male DNA profiles, her having a relationship with a guy named Robert.
Right.
What if Robert number two was the one that Eugenie was dating? If they were best friends, what if they all decide to go out one night and something went wrong? Something turned bad.
You never know.
We don't have Robert-- still waiting on Hisast name.
But we have Mark Estes.
We got a record? This is Robert's best friend Mark? That stood out to the boss of the Fence Company.
Well, he got some violent history.
Criminal history, yes.
Violent history, yes.
Any possible leads to where he could be? I'm gonna see if that address is still good.
Yeah.
Well, y'all jump on that as fast as possible.
All right.
Good job, y'all.
All right, Mark.
Ready or not, here we come.
You let me over now? Thank you.
Traffic kills me.
I have road rage.
Don't go all kung fu on him, now.
No.
I'm saving the emotions right now.
I'm saving it just for him.
Must be right here.
Like, go through this entrance-way and turn left.
That's him right there.
I recognise him.
Yep.
- Mark Estes? - Yes.
We both detectives with the Iberville sheriff's office.
We're working an 18 -year-old homicide case.
Mark, I'd like to take some time and talk to you if I'm not inconveniencing too much.
Just becomes someone seems cooperative at first, doesn't mean they're some choir boy.
He's still a suspect until I can prove otherwise.
Let's go.
Who gonna be the good guy and bad guy? You gonna be the bad guy? One of us got to be bad.
Come on, Rodie.
Let's rock.
Robert and Mark were supposedly best friends.
When you got multiple suspects, sooner or later, they gonna open their mouths.
To their best friend, to their family-- someone they think they're gonna trust.
But you know what? It's gonna come back and bite them in the ass.
Detective Sanchez.
Mark, this one hell of a case we asked you to come in for.
How long you work for Hagan Fence? I worked for Hagan Fence for about eight years.
You ever been to Iberville parish before? Did any work around here? Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
That's what I say-- with those Fence companies, you work all over this state.
Right.
Used to know this place like the back of my hand.
Cool.
You ever heard of bayou Manchac? Oh, yeah.
What you know about bayou Manchac? I mean that I used to-- I've been there.
- Fished? - Yeah.
You fished there? Oh, yeah, we fished there, and we drove through there, built fence work there.
Do you, um, know a Robert? Bobby and I were top-notch fence men, and we were the lead men at Hagan there.
Robert Dean.
I'm on it.
Okay.
How close were you and Robert? Fairly close.
I mean, as far as working buddies, you know? Got something for you.
You know this man? Yeah.
Yeah.
That's Robert Dean-- Bobby Dean.
Yeah.
Did y'all attend any bars together? Oh, yeah, but Which ones? Oh, I don't know.
Iberville? Baton Rouge? Yeah.
Baton Rouge.
What bars? You remember? Oh, uh, let's see-- white rose motel, the strip club up on airline that used to be there.
Did Bobby have a drinking problem? Yes.
He would drink until he passed out.
Like to use drugs? Yeah.
I mean, we used to use drugs back then.
Was he a ladies' man? Construction workers on a crew, all the time they're elbowing each other, going, "look at that.
" I mean, y'all like women, y'all like Yeah, I like women, but I was married by then.
What about Dean? I mean, he wasn't real happy with the married life.
Would Robert cheat on his wife? Possible, yeah.
This is the case we're working.
This lady's name is Eugenie Boisfontaine.
You ever seen her before? Not familiar.
- Show you.
- There you go.
That particular house.
I mean, a lot of houses were You got that fence stall? There you go.
This fence right here is what y'all would've put up.
It does look familiar.
I mean, it's kind of, like, ringing a bell.
I mean, picket fences-- it might have been.
You don't remember nothing about her? Nothing.
What if I told you somebody told me that you were there one time? Maybe a couple times with your friend.
I wouldn't d-- I mean, I-- did he ever tell you he went out with this girl? Not that I'm aware of.
Like I said, when I knew him, he was married.
Yes, sir.
I mean, lot of people married run around on their ladies, you know? I want you to look at that fence and I want you to tell me, to the best of your knowledge, you and Robert Dean was talking about this particular girl one day, about how good she looked.
Not that I can recall.
You wouldn't hide anything for him? I mean, y'all were pretty close.
No.
Um, um, wait! I remember one time he was telling me that he was driving home from work, he said that some gal, some blond-headed gal-- this story's just, like, just coming back to me as you said that-- some blond-headed gal, she walked up to him, she said, "I been fighting with my husband.
I want to have sex.
" I remember one time he was telling me that he was driving home from work, he said that some gal, some blond-headed gal, she walked up to him, she said, "I been fighting with my husband.
I want to have sex.
" I kid you not.
That's the story he told me.
And they went and found, like, a dirt road, and he said they had sex in the back roads somewhere here out in the country.
So, that's kind of like what he did.
I mean, this was a long time ago, and this story's just now coming back to my recollect.
Number one, blond-haired girl-- Eugenie Boisfontaine.
Number two, a dirt frickin' road-- bayou frickin' Manchac.
Number three, had an argument right before they had sex-- Eugenie Boisfontaine.
We got some DNA off this girl that we gonna send to a lab.
You mind giving us a swab of your DNA so we can see if it matches up? No.
I think Eugenie Boisfontaine had an argument with her husband while they divorced-- just blows my [Bleep.]
mind.
I thought that was interesting, that, uh, random sex.
Me and my husband not getting along, and next you know, I'm having random sex on a gravel road.
And well, what was bayou Manchac during that time? Gravel.
Gravel road.
Correct.
Bayou Manchac in 1997 was about as gravel as you can get.
He knows the area.
You know, he said they fished the area.
A heavy drinker Well, let's go see if we can find Robert.
Let's go do it.
This is the last Robert to run now, so this got to be the son of a bitch.
I know.
Your heart's all right? Yeah, but it's just-- I want this son-- and I know you do, too.
I want this son of a bitch.
I want him.
I want to put our hands on him.
You been feeling all right? What's going on? Well, I went to the doctor.
Having problems with my only other kidney.
Found a few little spots.
I got to go back next weekend to go take that MRI test.
So They found spots on your other kidney? Yeah.
I don't know what I got.
Yeah.
[Bleep.]
Man.
I'm sorry to hear that.
If you need anything, let me know, all right? - I will, bud.
- Be praying for you.
I appreciate it.
That's all I ask.
Thank you.
I understand what Rodie's going through.
I feel it.
My mom died of cancer, and I don't wish nobody losing a parent.
Oh, my God, it's horrible.
But heaven forbid if something was to happen to him before we solve this case.
I'd do my best to try to solve it for him and Eugenie.
The case has got to be solved.
And I'm gonna make sure it does.
We got to find this [Bleep.]
Aubrey.
Good? Yeah.
I'm good.
Is it ringing? Mm-hmm.
I hear it.
Don't think nobody's home.
See anybody coming out the back? Sheriff's office! Hey.
Somebody'sack here.
I'm looking for Mr.
Dean.
Go put a shirt on, dude.
Go put something on.
Robert Dean? You knew him? Uh, you got a picture of him? Let's see if we talking about the same one.
Is that him? Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
He's my wife's cousin.
Okay.
You know where he's at right now? No.
Your wife could give us, like, another person to go talk to? Oh, really? Mm-hmm.
I'd like to get her address and talk to her if we could.
First Robert, we have toait on his DNA.
Now we got Robert number two.
He's supposed to be a drunk, and he hangs around at Alligator Bar.
Did she say how long she was dating this guy? I just remember that they were gonna have another date at the Alligator Bar.
That damn Alligator Bar ain't but a few miles from where Eugenie's body was dumped on frickin' bayou Manchac.
This could be the Robert we're looking for.
Let's go, Aub.
Sheriff's office! Hi, ma'am.
How you doing? Can y'all come out here, if you don't mind? We're looking for a guy by the name of Mr.
Robert Dean.
Are y'all familiar with him? - He's our brother.
- Our brother.
Is this y'all brother? - Yes.
Yes.
- Yeah.
Where is he now? Honestly You buying lunch today? No! No, no.
It's my birthday.
You buying for me today.
Okay.
It is your birthday? Yeah.
Today.
Happy Birthday.
Thank you, my buddy.
I'm buying fory.
Thank you.
I knew you would.
Gohh! This is a trash bin.
Wait.
That's all arrest reports.
Is that an arrest? This ain't my car.
This is my office.
This goes to show you how hard of a working detective I am.
Dude, look at the junk in here.
You need to clean this office of yours.
I can't clean it.
Look at the dust-- how thick the dust is.
I know you a fanatic.
That don't bother me.
You know, I'm bringing criminals in, and I ain't riding the president around.
Well.
.
Clean car is a happy car.
Oh, God.
We're looking for a guy by the name of Mr.
Robert Dean.
Are y'all familiar with him? Yes, our brother.
Our brother.
Is this y'all brother? - Yes.
Yes.
- Yeah.
Where is he now? Honestly His ashes are buried in our backyard.
He passed away in June.
Passed away in June From cancer.
I'm sorry to hear that.
For both of y'all, I'm very sorry.
What kind of cancer your brother have there? Colon cancer.
I've had kidney cancer.
It's horrible.
Losing a loved one like that.
I mean, it's heart-wrenching.
But the fact is that just because Robert Dean's passed away doesn't mean he's innocent.
Was he living here when he passed away? No.
He was living in mobile, but he wanted to be buried here.
This is his home, then.
- Right.
- Mm-hmm.
My condolences, and I wish he was still here with y'all, mainly, and I wish he could talk to us.
This is the young lady that was abducted in 1997.
Did she ever come around here with your brother or anything like that? - No.
I never seen her.
- Never seen her before? - No.
- No.
Did he mention that name being a girlfriend or somebody he had been dating or anything? Not that I know of.
Since your brother's deceased, do y'all know what swabbing is? So we can get a little DNA so we can match-- see if it match some evidence we have.
Would y'all mind if we take that? Nope.
That's fine.
As an investigator, you prepare yourself for certain people to resist helping you, especially when it's a family member and you got a person of interest involved.
Now, I think y'all are doing an awesome job by trying to figure that out.
We try.
And it's tough.
But you're not giving up on her.
That's the thing.
You're not giving up.
Yes, ma'am.
'Cause if it was my family member, I'd want to know.
When you got a family member that's trying to help you with the case, that's real encouraging.
We're all just trying to get to the truth.
- Thank y'all so much.
- Very welcome.
Thank you for your time and help.
Dean's still a suspect until his sisters' DNA comes back.
And it neither includes or excludes him.
Hopefully, the DNA will tell the tale.
You think Dean did it? Possibility.
Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, buddy.
I don't know.
We been searching for a needle in a haystack, and we got a Robert that freakin' lines up.
The moon and stars almost line up with this guy.
She said that she was dating a guy called Robert.
I know Robert.
Robert was a drinker.
I knew that.
We all called him Bobby Dean.
She walked up to him, she said, "I been fighting with my husband.
I want to have sex.
" And they went down to, like, a dirt road.
Till we get that DNA back, everybody's a suspect.
You talk to Eugenie's ex or his lawyers yet? The lawyer called us back.
I had to call him a couple times.
He wants us to do a little conference call or something.
Good.
I love talking to lawyers.
I feel like the ex is giving us the run-around.
He ain't rushing down to Iberville, knocking on the door.
That's for certain.
And something's up there, buddy.
He's playing dodge ball, dude.
Eugenie's only crime she ever committed in her life was having a miserable divorce from her husband.
I see the clouds They're rollin' in Her appearance has started to deteriorate.
You know, she was divorced for a couple years, living alone and lonely.
Oo-oo-oo-ooh Hear the calling Something's really perturbing me on this case right now-- the ex-husband.
Very suspicious to me.
I was married six times.
If something would happen to them, someone would murder them, I'd be the first son of a bitch to pick up the phone.
So you know what that tells me? Sound like he got something to hide.
Ooh, ooh, ooh Walkin' on the water Ooh, ooh, ooh Darkness under my feet Ooh, ooh, ooh Gonna make the devil holler hallelujah We got a helof a lot of good suspects in this case.
Aggravated assaults, aggravated burglaries.
False imprisonment, which is a kidnap.
Got a freakin' life ahead of her.
Somebody took her life and threw her in the damn water.
Should've done this 20 years ago.
I wish I was there for you more.
I want to spend as much time with my son as I can, because I don't want him to feel like I felt.
The one kidney you have remaining has a couple spots on it.
Hey, doc, how much time do I got? Can I ask, when did you first become aware that Eugenie was either missing or dead? He didn't know anything about her death at all until you guys contacted him legally.
I think Eugenie's ex-husband is scared to sit down across the table form us and let us look into his eyes and see what we might see.
So, it's wife we talking about, ex-wife, not a stranger off the street.
Geez.
Un-frickin'-believable.
You know, you're supposed to be retired but you're not.
I live to work.
