Making the Cut (2020) s01e04 Episode Script
Fight For Your Life
1
###
- You've changed your mind?
- Mm-hmm.
When there's a war, the tailor survives,
because a tailor can cut.
His knife is his tool.
So, that's your tool.
You know how to navigate your tool.
You need to show that.
Nicole.
I want to get to know you better.
I still don't feel like I know you.
I want to give you another chance.
Thank you. Thank you, Nicole.
I have to tell you, I did not change my mind.
You did not convince me right now
or in the looks that I have seen from you,
to be honest with you.
Yeah.
What about you?
You know, I do feel like I want to give you
another shot at this.
You know, you should really
take our critique very seriously,
'cause we're gonna be, I think, looking for
what you're gonna do next.
Yeah.
- We're going to give you another chance.
- Thank you, Carine.
So, maybe now, you're going
to stand up more.
Yeah.
I still don't get it.
But majority rules,
so, you're making the cut.
Thank you.
Thank you, Troy.
Thank you.
That was a very close call.
The judges gave me a second chance,
so I have to give them
as much as they gave me.
So far, the only thing I've seen that I know
that you are that way inclined
is that blue jacket.
Yeah. There's more
where that came from.
Let's see it, then.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Now all eyes are on Troy,
but I'm gonna fight to be here,
by showing them what I can do.
Heidi, I just feel like,
this is a competition.
- There's only one winner, right?
- Yeah.
So, I just don't feel this, like,
hunger of, like, "I want this."
I mean, you know,
we want to invest this money,
this million dollars into someone
who's really hungry and wants to do this,
and it shows in the work.
To get this amount of money,
it's a very, very big deal.
Any sort of investor would not give you
a second chance.
They would just move on and give that money
to somebody else
who they know is just going to be
successful no matter what.
XX don't feel comfortable.
You need to have not just the talent
but the desire to win this competition.
- What a show today.
- - Yeah, "what a show" is right.
You and I picked these designers.
We know how talented they are.
These designers are so complacent.
Who's putting up a fight?
- They're a little bit snoozy.
- They're snoozing.
I agree with you. We need to wake them up.
I have an idea, and I want your approval
and sign-off on presenting this idea.
What?
Designers
Will you please join me downstairs?
Well, I won't surprise any of you by saying
that that was an intensive exchange
with the judges.
Very intensive.
And there was one common denominator
to their conversations,
and that was about fight.
Showing what you're made of,
demonstrating that you can lead
the next big global brand.
As you all know,
there's a million dollars at stake,
plus a mentorship and an opportunity
to sell an entire collection on Amazon.
And they're not going to give it
to any designer
who doesn't demonstrate that they have fight,
and I mean an intense fire in your belly.
And I believe in you.
I know you have the fight.
So, I convinced Heidi
to let me give you an opportunity
to demonstrate that more profoundly.
Tomorrow morning, there will be fabric
from your collaborative collections.
You will also have access to the fabric
from previous fashion shows.
We will not be fabric shopping.
You will create one look.
You will have seven hours.
Ahh.
This assignment is stupid crazy.
Seven hours is really, really short.
Because your only work time
is during the day,
there's no seamstress work through the night.
Well,.
Excuse me. Please excuse my French.
Um like, oh my God.
Esther can't sew. Sabato can't sew.
There are a lot of people that can't sew,
that don't know even
how to stitch a line together.
The look that you create must be accessible.
Your fashion show will be right here
tomorrow night.
There will be a winning look,
and it will be available on Amazon.
And correspondingly,
a designer's going home.
Tomorrow I have seven hours
to show the judges
exactly why I deserve to be here.
They believe in me,
so I have to deliver for them.
I definitely have to click my heels
and make a miracle happen.
Get some rest, because tomorrow
will be crazy and frenetic.
Let's do it.
- I will see you tomorrow.
- Thank you, Tim.
Well, the stakes are extremely high,
especially for me,
coming off of the critique
that I got tonight.
In this kind of setting, you have to be
willing to step outside of your comfort zone
to make an impact.
I never cut pants.
So, I'm definitely thinking
about making a pair of pants.
I have fought to get here,
and I will continue to fight
to show them that I deserve to be here.
I would hope that everybody
is sketching right now.
If everybody is not sketching right now,
then they are not taking this
as seriously as I am.
Cheers to the winners.
Jonny, I am so proud of you.
- Today you Ah! I was so happy.
- Turn that around.
Yes. I was so ha Yeah.
My heart was, like, beating.
I needed it. But I needed Naomi to give me,
like, one kind word, and,
"I have nothing to say."
Now that I got positive feedback,
I feel super empowered.
And I feel determined to, like, fight.
Fight as hard as I can for this.
Tomorrow,
all eyes are going to be on me.
Like, that's for sure.
There is a lot of pressure.
But I know I have to do something
that's sort of signature Troy.
I got to come correct,
'cause this is my last shot.
They want to see some fight in us,
so, it would be counterproductive
if I was in the courtyard right now
having a glass of wine.
I want to do the responsible thing,
kind of get myself mentally prepared to
bang something out tomorrow
that could hopefully win.
Growing up, my mom had me
when she was really young.
My mom was 16 when she had me,
so she was still in high school.
I think when I was probably like 8 or 9,
my mom was diagnosed with a mental illness.
Schizophrenia, which is pretty debilitating.
My mom couldn't be what I needed her to be.
It kind of forces you to grow up pretty fast,
be self-sufficient
and know how to be resilient,
and I know that that situation
was preparing me for who I am now
and what I plan to do.
So, I started my brand, Megan/Renee.
If J-Lo and, like, the coolness
of Bianca Jagger were to have a baby,
that's my brand.
Designing my own line and designing
for another company is a lot of work.
There's a lot of late nights.
There's a lot of weekends.
But to know that I've worked so hard
all these years and actually it's paying off,
and I'm here, and I've been recognized
for it, it's amazing.
I started fencing four years ago,
and I am a fencing addict.
I can't get enough of it.
In fact, the official language
of the sport is French.
So, this is really very, very thrilling.
- Hi-yah!
- I invited Heidi here for some fencing,
and finally, I can teach her something!
How many years
have you been doing this, Tim?
- Only four.
- I think I can pick this up in no time.
Hi-yah!
I have been in dozens and dozens
and dozens of bouts,
and I've won once.
I won against a 9-year-old girl
who was about 4 feet tall.
Aria.
I'm sorry, Aria.
Tim, what is taking you so long?
I'm coming, I'm coming!
Alright already!
Get it done
Okay!
I got it, I got it.
Hey, y'all,
let's get this challenge going.
This assignment is crazy.
We have seven hours to make a look,
and we have to use leftover fabric.
I'm going to make a jacket dress.
I just want to focus on the form of it.
Last night, a lot of the fit
gave them questions.
I have to focus on getting this jacket
looking nice and right.
There's a lot of pressure on having it
delivered in seven hours.
I'm walking on a thin line.
I got to be smart
and not try to bite off more than I can chew.
- Jonny, here's more stripe.
- Thank you, baby.
I finally got good feedback
after the collaboration with Megan,
and I'm, like, ready to take this next one
and run with it.
I loved my leather with the flow,
so today, I'm going to stand out
by, like, bringing, like,
the feminine side of Jonny.
And no one's really seen that yet,
but it's there.
What are you making, Will?
- I'm making a high-waisted crop skinny
- Pants?
Yeah, 'cause they wanted to see
some more from me.
So, I didn't just want to do
another pretty dress.
So, I'm going to give them a draped top
and sequin pant.
Oh, cool.
My pant is stolen fabric
from the failed Troy and Josh collaboration.
I thought, why not show my love of glamour
in that kind of Old Hollywood aesthetic?
And also show the judges how to make
what they now consider an ugly fabric
to be something that is fashion.
What about you?
I'm doing, um
this, like, crop top and a skirt.
Oh, nice. Are these pieces
that you've made before,
or are you doing them for the first time?
No, I Who has time
Who is doing for the first time?
Nobody's, like, designing something
from scratch today, I feel like.
Oh. I am.
I'm giving them an accessible look
that represents me.
I need to be on my "A" game, because
I haven't gotten any critique
for the past three fashion shows,
and they need to get to know me
and my brand more
to stay in this competition.
I am from Israel.
I love my country. I love where I'm from.
Growing up in Israel
makes you tougher for life.
I served two years in Israeli air force.
My great-grandfather was
a very well-known tailor in the village,
and he would make clothing
for all the important people in town.
He was killed in Auschwitz.
I really feel a huge responsibility
to continue this legacy.
My brand's name is Rinat Brodach.
I started off as a women's wear brand,
and it evolved to gender-neutral.
I don't think there should be
limitations on fashion.
People need to be curious in life,
and that's what my clothes
are here to provide.
I want to make my great-grandfather proud,
finish what he wasn't able to do,
and I feel like God has really prepared me
for this moment.
I had to eat shit before I got here.
Does anybody have
any thin, white fusing?
Uh, yeah.
- Can I use it?
- Yeah. Sure.
- Thank you so much.
- You're welcome.
I'll share the million dollars
with you, Esther.
Thank you!
¡Ay, Dios mío!
It's like $500 sitting right here.
I'm going to make a pant similar to the one
I showed on the runway yesterday.
And then I'm making the flowy,
asymmetrical cape top.
I haven't won any assignments yet.
This is a big opportunity.
I came here to win.
I did not come here to go home.
I'm going to make it different enough
to where I can show
that I'm evolving as a designer,
but not too different.
I don't think this is the time
to really start experimenting,
when we only have seven hours.
Stand up.
Today,
I'm going to make a skirt and a top.
Both are completely deconstructed
and falling open off of the body.
And then I'm painting over it.
So, I have a big day today.
Even Esther's pins are black.
The model has a bigger breast
than I usually work with.
So, I take it as a chance to make a dress
accessible to different sizes of breasts.
Generally, my designs take more time,
because they're often very elaborate.
To do a whole outfit in only seven hours,
it's a bit crazy.
Aah!
- Did I do..?
- Oh, you got plastic on it now?
One iron down.
God, I'm making a dress!
I'm making my cape dress.
They are always in collections,
and pieces that you do all the time.
And I'm using color.
- I'm learning.
- We know. You're doing good, Bebé.
- Mm-hmm. Keep it up.
- Thank you.
I had the fear
of not knowing how to sew,
but fear is really necessary to grow.
I'm going to learn this,
because it's a limitation,
and I'm a fighter, I'm a warrior.
I just have to do it.
Look how the thread goes on
the other machines, and then you can copy it.
- That's how I learned it.
- Thank you.
I have no problem
with helping people.
This is a design competition.
That's what I want to win by.
You know what I mean?
Not because somebody
doesn't know how to sew.
Hola, Papi, watch out now.
Yeah, I don't touch thread.
I definitely think
that I know him now
also on, like, a human level
more than just Sabato the designer,
'cause, you know, he talks a lot.
One of the few people in life
that can over talk me.
- Ji Ji baby, what you doing?
- Sabato!
Making a jumpsuit.
Still working on it!
Shut up!
- What time is it?
- Noon.
Okay. So, you see?
It's nice to use red thread
when everybody's doing black and white.
Yeah, 'cause nobody will touch it.
Nobody has time to change the thread.
Sabato's moving so fast.
I've never seen him move so fast
in this whole competition.
I'm glued to this machine today.
There's no cigarettes happening today.
- God, why do people sew with fabric?
- Why did you choose it, then?
- You know what?
- Yeah, what?
I actually have never sewn fabric.
I just didn't realize it would be
- Oh.
- a bitch.
Why did I do this?
It's miserable to sew and miserable to cut.
I'm not used to it.
- I feel like a caveman.
- Usually, I'm just like
and this one's like
I'm freaking out,
because anyone can go home.
The time crunch is real.
This is my second chance, and I have
to fight for my life at this point.
It's do or die.
Ah! Ah! Ah!
- You okay?
- Ah, my toe, my toe.
- I'm so sorry!
- Ahh!
Ji is a cut-toe competitor.
Oh, my God.
Are you ready for this, Tim Gunn?
You're going to get some booty whoopin'.
# Well, quit your talkin'
Now it's time for action #
# So, put your money where your mouth is #
I'm ready.
I'm not loving this.
- Loving what? The crotch thing?
- Yeah.
- It's about protection.
- No, but, why would it be on the outside?
This also, I mean, if you have this out,
pom pom, little foxtail, something.
- Like, to have this
- Well, we're not
It's a bit I don't know, it looks
a bit silly back here.
We're not, um, shy about the function.
We're perfectly willing to let it show.
And this uniform has a very long,
centuries-old history,
and the reason it's white is because
- You see the blood better.
- Exactly.
See? Beauty and brains.
- Alright, so
- Okay.
- En garde.
- En garde!
You know what? You really are a natural.
Right heel
You're pushing yourself
off the ball of your left foot.
Push push push
- You ready to go backwards?
- Yes.
It's the opposite. Push off
You must look serious while doing so.
You must.
And this is a workout for the body
and for the brain.
- Here! This!
- Yeah.
- Feel that muscle.
- You have flexibility.
- Ooh. Heidi, that's some booty.
- Yeah.
Wow. En garde, Heidi.
###
# My head's a mess #
# I'm all distressed #
# I just want to get out and see the world #
Tim told us we have seven hours
to create a look
that will impress the judges
and show our fight and our determination.
There are no words to describe
what a platform like Amazon could do
for an emerging designer.
So, everybody feels the pressure.
# Don't judge me
I'm not perfect #
# I'm a human just like any one of you #
# With a dark side and shades of groovy #
Oh! You took my red off?
- No, it's still on there.
- Oh.
Hi, everyone.
How's it going, TG, TG?
Good. I'm here to check in with you,
but I'm not doing Tim talks.
I'm doing what I'm calling drive bys.
Okay, TG.
- Okay.
- Thank you, Tim.
How's Megan?
I'm doing good. So, I have this cape top
I like the color blocking.
I think it's really cool.
You know what I'm learning here?
That less is more.
- You certainly don't want to overdesign.
- Yeah.
You also don't want to under design.
I'm taking last night's critique
really to heart.
Good.
I don't want to just come
with another beautiful gown.
- No, you don't.
- So, I've done a tailored pant.
You know, disco, very fun.
- Still very me.
- Yeah.
And I'm going to do a draped top,
something that is still very me
but still pairs very well
back to the trouser.
- You're pushing it. I couldn't be happier.
- Thank you so much, Tim.
I'm doing a tailored jacket dress.
My sleeves are different.
They're from a coat.
So, they're like the fuller sleeve
on a nice, slender body,
accentuating the waist.
So, oversized?
Not oversized.
It's tailored, but the sleeves are oversized.
- Okay.
- Because they're from a men's coat.
So, I believe the contrast
will show them, uh
my aesthetic but in a snapshot view,
since we only have seven hours.
- Show them what you've got.
- Yes
- This is that opportunity.
- Yes.
I think from my critique yesterday
with the judges,
I have to give this 2,000%,
because I am fighting for my life right now.
I'm making a jumpsuit,
and the silhouette is going to be
I want it to be like
an East meets West kind of thing.
- Well, that's you.
- Yeah, exactly.
- It's a top and a skirt piece
- Oh, they're separates.
- Separates.
- Okay.
And this one goes completely asymmetrical
and kind of gives, like, the idea
that it's like cut wrong,
and this kind of has, like,
a deconstructed feel to it.
Wait a minute. You want it to look
as though it's cut wrong?
Yeah.
I'm all for asymmetry, but it just
it needs to look beautiful.
- Yeah, definitely.
- You know?
As opposed to just kooky.
- I will make a dress.
- Okay.
It has a bit of
pleated draping in the front
That sounds good.
so it's more accessible, I think,
for a wider range of women.
- But, I mean, it will be an Esther dress.
- Well, it has to be.
- You can't go off-brand.
- Yeah, it has to be.
It's very you, Sabato.
Hi, Tim. It is, huh?
But, you know it feels more feminine.
It's what Paris is doing to me.
So, I'm shifting from avant-garde
into fragility
I'm sewing, and I'm growing.
You are. I agree.
This morning, I came in,
I grabbed this print,
which I'm excited about.
I want to show some range.
I've been doing a lot of leather,
and I don't want to be pegged
as just the leather designer.
You know, the only thing is, this stripe
is so branded with Megan.
It's kind of like this Victorian dress.
I think it's gonna look like the bride
of, like, Beetlejuice,
in a way in a chic way.
Your confidence gives me confidence.
- Awesome. Cool.
- Okay. Carry on.
- Want to see something?
- Yes.
So, I'm making a skirt
that's gonna be with a crop top
made out of denim in the same fabric.
With a crop top?
Well, to basically hit the exact line
where it ends.
Okay. Are you doing enough with the top?
Um, we'll see. Hopefully.
- Carry on.
- Thank you.
I see the grit that we want to see.
I see the fire. I see the determination.
I couldn't be happier.
Show them what you've got.
- Thanks, Tim.
- Thank you, everyone.
I'm stressin'.
Oh, Troy, can I finish?
- Can you use that one, please?
- No, because I have to change the thread.
I changed the thread on this one.
- You took the red off?
- Yeah.
- Guys, can I ask a favor?
- No.
Can you leave this red thread here for now?
Anything you want, Sabatino.
Because, you know, Troy,
I did not appreciate that.
- I apologize, but
- Okay.
When they send me home, I can't say
I got up to give Sabato the machine.
He wanted his machine back,
but there was no way I was getting up.
You see a thread is there,
so take another machine.
Total B.S., but you know something?
He's gonna get what you deserve.
I don't know, I just think
the energy here is bizarre.
Like, I don't know.
People are, like, stressing out.
Maybe certain people
can't handle the pressure.
I think it takes, like, a certain kind
of human being to really deal with this.
Tim said that we have to fight for our lives,
that they're not seeing the "fire" in us.
Well, this is the fire.
# It's all on fire #
# It's all on fire #
The studio is not big enough for all of us.
So, how many steps can you do
forward or backwards?
- Is there a rule?
- No.
So, I can, like, go
I can push you all the way against the wall.
And if you do, you get the point.
Let's do it.
Okay. Three points.
En garde
Fence.
Oof. That was excellent.
Thank you.
En garde fence.
You got it.
- You're making me win right now.
- No, I'm not.
I'm going for blood.
Alright, en garde.
Fence!
This is a real sword fight.
Oh.
- Girl power!
- I'm really impressed.
Because in modeling,
when you do a lot of catalogue,
you have to do the two step forward,
two back.
So you get a little wind in the hair.
You're a natural athlete,
and I'm envious.
###
Oh
I spilled it all over the floor.
- Are you using paint?
- Yes. Like, actual paint.
Whoo!
I up
the stripes in the front.
Well, they're not like I don't know how
to line them up with darts and stuff.
I'm not sure about that choice.
To me, that fabric, you know,
looks very Megan.
Are you going to put
Is there something here or nothing?
There's nothing there.
It might be an eyesore.
- Hey, guys.
- Hi!
- Where's my girl?
- Hi!
They're like, "You guys have seven hours
to make a gown," and la la la la la.
If you want, we can go to the, um
the other room and get dressed.
- Oh, you're already naked. Okay, great.
- Yeah.
Great. Okay.
Alright, turn around.
I cannot remember
the last time I made a dress.
People are gonna see this,
and they're gonna be like, "What happened?"
- Just say, "I've evolved."
- The reinvention tour.
Oh, my God. I freakin' love it!
I really love Megan as a person.
I think her looks
so far into the competition, they're
looks that already exist in the world.
Like, go Google, like,
a nice symmetrical top.
Like, I've seen that look.
Aside from length, they look amazing on her.
I'm really happy with the fit.
And, um I think they look great.
The pants were ready.
She looks just killer in them.
But my top is not.
I need to finish on time.
This is the biggest opportunity of my life.
I cannot mess this up.
Here it is. Yeah, can we make it
like a strong cat eye?
Not super tied back,
but, like, a little, like, messy.
Can you walk for me?
Wonderful.
When's the last time I had my face
up a girl's dress?
- Are you gonna ask me?
- Last night
I realize I've bitten off
more than I can chew.
I will not have time to execute
the dress part of this jacket dress.
I will try to fake it.
I remember this dress I had designed,
called my three-minute dress.
Not only does it take no time to make,
but pretty flowy and easy.
So, it fits under the structure
of the jacket.
- Let me just press that really quickly.
- Okay.
Five minutes, guys!
That's the five-minute warning!
Okay, perfect.
- Is that good?
- Yeah. Push it in, okay?
Alright, designers, I told you
that you have seven hours,
and our seven hours is up.
I ran out of time finishing.
At this point, it's just full commitment.
I'm just hoping for the best.
Okay. Let's do it!
Hi, Tim.
- Hi, Tim.
- Hello.
Judges, thank you so much for being here.
Yesterday, there was a lot of talk
about the designers showing you
what they're made of.
We need someone who demonstrates
that they have the grit.
So, I wanted to give them an opportunity
to prove themselves to you.
They designed in one day.
They did not have any seamstresses. No help.
They had to do everything by themselves.
I mean, we're putting one million dollars
behind one of their brands, so
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
We really need to know that they have
what it takes to succeed.
I like the sound of that.
- Yeah. - Yeah.
So, thank you again.
And Carine couldn't be here today
because, as you know,
- it's couture fashion week
- Right.
and she had to attend
a lot of the shows today.
- Watch party.
- Yeah, let's all watch together.
- Oh, it looks beautiful.
- Doesn't it? Yeah.
Oh, my my nerves.
Let's start the show.
###
# Ooh #
- Oh! Here we go.
- Ooh, yay!
Yes. So graceful.
# Been around the block a couple of times #
# That don't mean I gotta get wise #
I like this.
- Nice top, huh?
- Yeah.
- Very nice.
- I like the color combo.
# Ain't no sense in crying, no, no #
Oh, and I like how it's open
on the sides there.
I like the top.
# Pardon my French, but, honey,
je m'en fous #
The only issue for me is
the elastic on the waist.
- The pant looks so expensive
- Yeah.
- That part makes it look cheap.
- I know what you mean.
But listen, for one day
- It's very good.
- It's great. Yeah.
# Ain't no shame #
- Yeah.
- Beautiful.
# Watch me do my walk, walk, yeah #
- Oh
- Bebé!
This is sexy.
I'm going to fight in court
right now.
It's just a great look.
# Gonna do my walk, gonna do my walk
Ooh #
It looks nicely made.
It just feels a little bland.
It's nothing new, but it's not bad.
# Heels above my shoulder #
I think the twist is the only thing,
really, that's saving it.
I mean, it's the only thing
that's interesting, for sure.
But not everybody can wear that.
She can come over every day.
###
It looks like Ji.
- Yeah, it's very Ji.
- It's all Ji.
I don't know, this is not
my most favorite of hers.
I think it's cute and easy.
I think it's sellable.
I think it's okay.
I don't think it's fabulous.
But I love the comfort value. It's easy.
Every woman can wear this.
- It's like middle of the road for me.
- You know?
- Lord.
- It looks great.
Don't say, "Oh, Lord."
# Party all the time
Partners in crime #
# Put our hands up #
# Just turn off this clock #
# Party all the time #
- Oh.
- Looks beautiful.
Thank you.
# Feelin' on top under the neon lights #
- Wow!
- I'm very into this.
- I like this.
- I really like this.
# Now it's camera action #
# Feel the attraction #
# Never wanna let go #
I think it gives you another understanding
of what he's about,
- beyond kind of the leather jacket.
- Yep.
'Cause it still feels like the same girl.
- It feels like the leather family.
- Yeah.
The whole look is good.
And I do think it cuts through the noise.
- I agree. It's cool.
- I think it's more of a point of view.
It's feminine,
but it's rock and roll too.
- It's versatile, more so than we realize.
- Yeah.
- Beautiful movement.
- Yeah.
# Here's to all my people
who party all night long #
# Party all the time, we are the line #
Fly, Lilly, fly. Yes!
# Under the neon lights #
This isn't my favorite dress of his,
but I would wear this dress.
# Under the neon lights #
I don't think he took a huge risk here
- He didn't take a risk.
but it's very him,
and I could see women wearing this.
I wouldn't. These kind of things
I feel like are too boring.
So proud of myself.
And you should be.
# Under the neon lights #
- Wow, this is so beautiful, Troy!
- Thank you, thank you.
# Show us what you got
Show us what you got #
Wow. It looks like someone
rolled in it in the bed.
The proportion of the jacket
is weird to me.
# Steady rockin' #
Could you walk and take off the jacket?
- What happened?
- Who stopped her?
There is a dress under there,
so we'd like to see that.
# Show 'em what you got
Show it off on the dance floor #
Can I see you raise your arm?
For me, there's no design here.
And now, put your jacket on.
# Go back and show this #
# Like you a soldier #
I mean, look at the back.
It's ill-fitting and super snoozy.
- Get it, Troy.
- Very powerful, confident.
# Me and my girls #
# Takin' on the world #
# Sundays we can stay in,
but it's magic going everywhere #
Wow!
Yeah, the paint did work out
in the end.
I'm so happy you used it.
I like that.
It's interesting.
# How many girl does it take to screw in
a black light up in a swag club? #
# You sure could illuminate this place
Crazy ravin' and raise it up #
That's paint.
- Oh, wow.
- Yeah, he painted over it.
This is cool.
- I really like that.
- Love the skirt.
# I can hear the jammin'
I just dance and my dancin' make it stop #
He went for his imagination, but he also
made it commercial and wearable.
I like it, but I think it's a little bit
too complicated for a selling purpose.
- It's so beautiful.
- It looks amazing.
Thank you so much.
# We like to go run this town #
# See what kind of fun we can get in now #
# Party, party, make the club go pow #
# All my girls and we screamin' now #
You can ring my bell any day.
# Me and my girls make the world go round #
# It's all about us
We're the queens of the town #
There is a taste level problem.
And the top could have been good,
I'm telling you,
but, Will, I can't believe I can't believe
that he came out with this pant.
It's like weird party clothes.
Back in the day, yeah.
I mean, that's a shocker.
The combination
a fabric is such a weird choice.
No, it's not good.
It's just tacky.
Well, at least I will say,
I know what he's about.
I agree.
- Rock and roll!
- You did it, girl.
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
# You're a superstar #
# Now what everybody's waiting for
is what you are #
There's more flow to this.
More volume.
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
# Ready, steady, go #
The waist is heaven.
It is. The waist is really heaven.
That is beautiful.
No, no, no, I love this one.
The silhouette is divine.
Beautiful.
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
And did that in one day.
That's wild.
That's incredible.
I really like that she brought in
the epaulet detail
- and the cuff detail
- Mm-hmm. And here too.
She's definitely got an aesthetic.
Yeah, I agree,
from a brand perspective
Absolutely.
- Beautiful.
- Yeah. That's stunning.
Yay to Esther!
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
# You're a superstar #
Guys, you were beautiful!
Bravo, bravissimo!
- Hello there.
- Hello.
Going into this final showdown,
I expect a certain amount of feedback.
And I'm ready.
So, you guys had a fun day today?
Mm-hmm.
I think that fashion is
an extremely hard business.
You have to have the fight.
Being able to succeed under pressure
is so important in fashion.
For a lot of you today, your hard work
really resulted in a lot of glamour.
- Well done.
- Thank you.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next great global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that walk in the fashion show.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
The winner's look will be available
immediately on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
I want to remind you that any number
of designers can go home at any time,
and a conversation can change everything.
- Right, Troy?
- Yes.
We discussed each of your looks.
Based on the fashion show,
we made some decisions.
but they're not necessarily final.
We have thoughts and some questions
for some of you.
Rinat, we want to talk to you.
- Hey, guys.
- Hi.
- How's it going?
- Hola. So, how was this for you?
It was good.
I planned a little bit last night.
and I had this vision
of this businesswoman getting up
to go to work in the morning
and going to her law firm,
and I wanted her to be
sophisticated and sexy,
and still after work be able
to go out and party.
You're really speaking my language.
This is something I do
at my own brand as well
is really rethinking
how women are dressing for work,
and I thought you cut the skirt really well.
- It was all piping inside too.
- - It was nicely made.
Yeah, it looked really,
really beautifully made.
I definitely think that women
would want to buy that.
Does it exist already? Yes.
But I think people would still buy it.
Naomi, what do you think of her look?
You can do more.
- You played it safe.
- Yeah.
Go beyond. Do it to your best.
- Let's see who you are.
- Exactly. Thank you.
I can pick up on that Israeli,
effortless girl within you
Thank you.
and I wish that I had gotten
a little bit more of that.
You know, the skirt and the top,
they were very stiff.
I would love to give it another layer
that also had this, like, ease to it.
Throughout the competition,
you've coasted under the radar.
I'm not sure I have a clear of a sense
of what you're about.
- So, what's it gonna take, Rinat?
- I'm going to fight.
You've got to roll up those sleeves
if you had any.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
- No.
- No.
Rinat
You're making the cut.
Thank you.
Megan, we want to talk to you.
- Hi, guys.
- Hi, Megan. - Hello.
Megan, tell us about your accessible look.
I don't know if you guys remember
the Fly Girls during In Living Color
Do I remember?
I wanted to be them.
So, yeah! So, I wanted a classy Fly Girl
without having a lot of elements
to the design.
- I mean, if that was available
- I would buy it.
- I'd buy it too.
- Aaah!
- It's very cool.
- I don't normally like
the pants that gather on the bottom,
but I like the way you don't sit
and have the ribbon
- Yeah, the ribbon makes it special.
- I like the tie.
And now that you explained to me that it was
a sophisticated Fly Girl,
I understood about the elastic on the waist.
- So, I love it.
- Thank you so much.
You had me at "Fly Girl."
I love that top.
I love the shape.
I thought it was really flattering.
I thought the pants were very cool.
- I would wear that for sure.
- It was really effortless.
It had a lot of things that we know you for,
but you also took a risk
and made something
a little bit pushed in shape.
- I think it really spoke volumes about you.
- Thank you. I appreciate that.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
- Nope.
- No.
- Megan
- Yes.
- you're making the cut.
- Thank you!
Thank you, guys.
But before we make our final decision
on today's winner,
we want to speak to a few more designers.
That's okay.
Thank you.
Jonny, we want to talk to you.
Go, Jonny.
Hi again.
Hi again!
- Jonny, tell us about your look today.
- So, my brand SKINGRAFT, back in L.A.,
it's kind of like this gothy, progressive
directional brand.
And so, when we used that stripe
the other day,
I was like, I know what my version
of the stripe would look like
if I wasn't on collab.
And I was even joking with Tim, I was like,
"She's like the daughter of Beetlejuice."
Or something like
you know, but
that dress is exactly what would go under
one of my jackets.
I loved your outfit today.
Awesome.
I just loved the ease.
And stripes are not easy to wear,
but it worked on that dress.
I'm very proud of you, Jonny.
Thank you so much.
That really means a lot to me.
You've really taken our notes
and soared with them.
Like, this is the feminine version
of who you are.
I thought the seams were so beautiful.
- I loved it so much, and I want one.
- Thank you.
And it really was so gratifying
to see how much you've evolved.
You know, the femininity,
the kind of gracefulness in it.
It's just one of those dresses
that's a no-brainer.
Mm-hmm.
Even though it's kind of simple,
it's still a head-turner.
- Yeah, it's cool.
- When a girl walks in the room,
you follow her, because it's special.
I love the shape of it.
I love the sleeves.
I love how you changed the stripes
a little bit up here.
It's not too much.
Because it could be very quickly
You know?
Again, it's not.
It still looks super sophisticated.
Everything was just perfect, if you ask me.
Awesome.
Judges, Jonny and Megan
were our favorites tonight.
- Have any of you changed your mind?
- No.
- Jonny
- Mm-hmm.
You are the winner today.
I'm so happy for you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Ahhhh!
Oh, it feels so good to win.
I came here to win, but, like,
after I got all the critiques,
I kind of forgot that it was a possibility.
Aaah! I feel so good.
Your look will be immediately available
on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
- Thank you so much, guys.
- Thank you.
Thank you so, so much.
Whoo!
Thank you.
- Yay!
- Good job.
Troy, we want to talk to you.
- Hello, Troy.
- Hi, everyone.
Alright, Troy, how was this under-the-gun
pressure cooker for you? How was it?
I'm used to doing a lot
and, like, trying to challenge myself,
so, I wanted to give you guys
the best impression of me.
The woman I was thinking of
was that power woman.
She's looking for ease
but still wants to exude her power,
and that's where the jacket comes in.
Are you happy with it?
I love the concept of it, but in seven hours,
I wanted to, like, see how much
I can get done to show that.
Are you happy with it?
I was Yes, I'm happy with the
I'm happy with the idea that I attempted.
- Troy
- Mm-hmm.
It all sounds lovely, but your words
were now to us you "attempted."
You liked "the concept."
These words is not sounding sure
of what you're doing.
And this is how your clothes look unsure.
I am sure about my looks.
- You're a tailor.
- Yes.
That's not what I saw in your outfit,
in your jacket.
It is difficult to put your arm with a dress
with a sleeve inside the jacket.
If you have a sleeve
that is like this wide,
and then you have to get all that fabric
into, like, a skinny
As a model, that would be my nightmare
to have to model that outfit.
I think the biggest problem for me is that
I really don't think
that we've seen anything,
whether in this assignment
or any of the past assignments,
that led me to believe
that there is a brand there.
It's just not at the level as a lot of these
other things that we're watching walk down.
It's just not there.
I don't know. I disagree.
I believe I am at the level.
But at this stage of the competition,
there's a lot of pieces, I'm like, that's Ji,
that's Esther, that's Sabato.
Like, I can see who's who.
I'm just not seeing you.
It's a shame to me, because, like, you knew
that your booty was on the line.
I was not going to give you that next chance,
if you remember yesterday.
I wanted them to be right.
We're rooting for you. We are.
You let us down.
I I need to be here. Like
This is this is my only shot.
And I know I have it in me.
The more feedback I get, it takes off
that hard exterior that I assumed I knew.
You can't just take in our criticism
and our guidance
to make you into a designer.
No, but it refines me.
Do you understand
what you just said?
That's what it sounds like, though.
- Judges, have you changed your mind?
- Mm-mm.
No.
Troy
I'm sorry. You're not making the cut.
- Sorry, Troy.
- It's alright.
Hopefully this is a new chapter for me.
It's definitely taught me how committed
I could be at a task.
Even though I know it's impossible,
I'll still reach for it.
You know when you said earlier
this was your last shot? It's not.
The world is your oyster, as they say.
- Yeah.
- Get back into the game.
- Yeah, yeah.
- I wish you good luck.
I think it built a better me.
Like, the experience wasn't in vain.
Alright. Bye, guys.
Oh
I hope this opportunity makes
a lot of changes in my life.
Bye, guys!
- Bye!
- Bye!
It's hard to see someone go,
but as a reminder, more than one person
can go at any time.
Will, we want to talk with you.
- Hi, Will.
- Hi.
Will, tell us about your look today.
Coming off of last night's critique,
I wanted to challenge myself,
try something new.
I don't do tailored pants, so I made
a high-waisted pencil pant.
Why can't you do pants?
I don't normally cut a pair of pants
traditionally.
I don't think that you should have done
that pant.
This assignment for you was like,
fight for your life, right?
And, like, "this is who I am."
And so, I just don't think that it was
the best choice
to go and try something new.
I actually didn't hate the top.
Like, I thought the top was really beautiful.
But it was like put together
that made it a different decade
but, like, I don't think that
that's the vibe that you were going for.
- It wasn't the total intention, and I
- Tell me who your customer is.
I was actually really inspired
by the model that I've worked with.
She's very young. She's very spunky.
She is a curvy model.
So, when I thought about a pant,
I did the high-waisted pant
and I did a crop pant, so that it would help
to elongate her legs.
To me, like, when I'm thinking about
what you've done in the past,
I feel like they're all going to some disco
many, many years ago.
I don't feel like this is now.
Consistently, you are that, like,
party girl, you love lamé.
I really get what you're about.
But I think there is a taste level problem.
You know, the top was very nice.
But it lacks sophistication and refinement.
Will, based on what you showed us today,
you're not making the cut.
How would you change our minds?
Um, the one thing that does ring true
is that you all know that it's me
when it walks down the stairs.
You know that I have an aesthetic.
You know that I have a point of view.
I do have a softness in my hand,
a very technical drape ability
that I haven't seen executed
from the rest of the people here.
So, there is a luxury level
that I can definitely bring,
and I just need
the next opportunity to show that.
It isn't about luxury.
It's about getting basic, simple.
You haven't got simple.
I've had a problem with you
for every assignment.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
Mm-mm.
No.
No.
Will
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
- Thank you. Thank you all so much.
- Thank you.
Aw.
- All the best to you, Will.
- Thank you.
I'm not the winner of Making the Cut,
but, for me, to have anything like this
happen to me in my life,
this is something
that I never could have dreamed of.
Hey, babe. We love you.
I could only just stand true to myself
and what I love to make,
and I did that, and I'm proud
of everything that I did.
- I'm going to miss you, bro.
- Thank you.
It's not the last
that people will hear from me.
- Thank you all so much.
- Aw, bye, Will. - Bye.
Will definitely has a big place in my heart,
and seeing Will leave,
that made me really sad.
If someone doesn't deserve to be here,
then they won't.
We really are trying to find
the best of the best.
It's so real. It's so real right now.
Two people went home.
But it's also making us realize, like,
any of us at any time can be sent home.
And that's like a very real reminder.
How was that for you guys?
Was it a little crazy?
- Hard.
- Hard, yeah.
But are you enjoying your time in Paris?
Are you feeling settled in?
- Yes.
- I love being here.
I'm just beginning to feel settled in.
Yeah, it's wonderful.
Well
Pack your bags, because
We're going to Tokyo!
To Tokyo! Fantastic!
I'm so excited, I'm going to Tokyo!
Tokyo? Wow.
It's like a dream come true.
Rah! There's nowhere else
I'd rather go than Tokyo.
I'm so excited.
I've been on a roller coaster of emotions,
like, "Oh, you just won,"
"Oh, two people went home."
Like, "Now you're going to Tokyo."
Like Whoa.
You're leaving tomorrow.
Whew!
- And Heidi and I will meet you there.
- Yeah.
Thank you! See you soon!
We'll see you in Tokyo!
See you! Konichiwa.
We will see you in Tokyo.
Konichiwa.
Next time, on Making the Cut
Konichiwa, designers, and welcome to Tokyo!
We want you to create
a two-look streetwear mini collection.
It's in pieces! It's like, I have an hour.
You look like you're on the verge of tears.
Ahh, I'm not a streetwear
kind of guy. I'm struggling.
They were absolutely incredible.
It was such a modern take on streetwear.
- I didn't like either dress.
- You were really in your head.
I don't want to see you go.
###
###
- You've changed your mind?
- Mm-hmm.
When there's a war, the tailor survives,
because a tailor can cut.
His knife is his tool.
So, that's your tool.
You know how to navigate your tool.
You need to show that.
Nicole.
I want to get to know you better.
I still don't feel like I know you.
I want to give you another chance.
Thank you. Thank you, Nicole.
I have to tell you, I did not change my mind.
You did not convince me right now
or in the looks that I have seen from you,
to be honest with you.
Yeah.
What about you?
You know, I do feel like I want to give you
another shot at this.
You know, you should really
take our critique very seriously,
'cause we're gonna be, I think, looking for
what you're gonna do next.
Yeah.
- We're going to give you another chance.
- Thank you, Carine.
So, maybe now, you're going
to stand up more.
Yeah.
I still don't get it.
But majority rules,
so, you're making the cut.
Thank you.
Thank you, Troy.
Thank you.
That was a very close call.
The judges gave me a second chance,
so I have to give them
as much as they gave me.
So far, the only thing I've seen that I know
that you are that way inclined
is that blue jacket.
Yeah. There's more
where that came from.
Let's see it, then.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Now all eyes are on Troy,
but I'm gonna fight to be here,
by showing them what I can do.
Heidi, I just feel like,
this is a competition.
- There's only one winner, right?
- Yeah.
So, I just don't feel this, like,
hunger of, like, "I want this."
I mean, you know,
we want to invest this money,
this million dollars into someone
who's really hungry and wants to do this,
and it shows in the work.
To get this amount of money,
it's a very, very big deal.
Any sort of investor would not give you
a second chance.
They would just move on and give that money
to somebody else
who they know is just going to be
successful no matter what.
XX don't feel comfortable.
You need to have not just the talent
but the desire to win this competition.
- What a show today.
- - Yeah, "what a show" is right.
You and I picked these designers.
We know how talented they are.
These designers are so complacent.
Who's putting up a fight?
- They're a little bit snoozy.
- They're snoozing.
I agree with you. We need to wake them up.
I have an idea, and I want your approval
and sign-off on presenting this idea.
What?
Designers
Will you please join me downstairs?
Well, I won't surprise any of you by saying
that that was an intensive exchange
with the judges.
Very intensive.
And there was one common denominator
to their conversations,
and that was about fight.
Showing what you're made of,
demonstrating that you can lead
the next big global brand.
As you all know,
there's a million dollars at stake,
plus a mentorship and an opportunity
to sell an entire collection on Amazon.
And they're not going to give it
to any designer
who doesn't demonstrate that they have fight,
and I mean an intense fire in your belly.
And I believe in you.
I know you have the fight.
So, I convinced Heidi
to let me give you an opportunity
to demonstrate that more profoundly.
Tomorrow morning, there will be fabric
from your collaborative collections.
You will also have access to the fabric
from previous fashion shows.
We will not be fabric shopping.
You will create one look.
You will have seven hours.
Ahh.
This assignment is stupid crazy.
Seven hours is really, really short.
Because your only work time
is during the day,
there's no seamstress work through the night.
Well,.
Excuse me. Please excuse my French.
Um like, oh my God.
Esther can't sew. Sabato can't sew.
There are a lot of people that can't sew,
that don't know even
how to stitch a line together.
The look that you create must be accessible.
Your fashion show will be right here
tomorrow night.
There will be a winning look,
and it will be available on Amazon.
And correspondingly,
a designer's going home.
Tomorrow I have seven hours
to show the judges
exactly why I deserve to be here.
They believe in me,
so I have to deliver for them.
I definitely have to click my heels
and make a miracle happen.
Get some rest, because tomorrow
will be crazy and frenetic.
Let's do it.
- I will see you tomorrow.
- Thank you, Tim.
Well, the stakes are extremely high,
especially for me,
coming off of the critique
that I got tonight.
In this kind of setting, you have to be
willing to step outside of your comfort zone
to make an impact.
I never cut pants.
So, I'm definitely thinking
about making a pair of pants.
I have fought to get here,
and I will continue to fight
to show them that I deserve to be here.
I would hope that everybody
is sketching right now.
If everybody is not sketching right now,
then they are not taking this
as seriously as I am.
Cheers to the winners.
Jonny, I am so proud of you.
- Today you Ah! I was so happy.
- Turn that around.
Yes. I was so ha Yeah.
My heart was, like, beating.
I needed it. But I needed Naomi to give me,
like, one kind word, and,
"I have nothing to say."
Now that I got positive feedback,
I feel super empowered.
And I feel determined to, like, fight.
Fight as hard as I can for this.
Tomorrow,
all eyes are going to be on me.
Like, that's for sure.
There is a lot of pressure.
But I know I have to do something
that's sort of signature Troy.
I got to come correct,
'cause this is my last shot.
They want to see some fight in us,
so, it would be counterproductive
if I was in the courtyard right now
having a glass of wine.
I want to do the responsible thing,
kind of get myself mentally prepared to
bang something out tomorrow
that could hopefully win.
Growing up, my mom had me
when she was really young.
My mom was 16 when she had me,
so she was still in high school.
I think when I was probably like 8 or 9,
my mom was diagnosed with a mental illness.
Schizophrenia, which is pretty debilitating.
My mom couldn't be what I needed her to be.
It kind of forces you to grow up pretty fast,
be self-sufficient
and know how to be resilient,
and I know that that situation
was preparing me for who I am now
and what I plan to do.
So, I started my brand, Megan/Renee.
If J-Lo and, like, the coolness
of Bianca Jagger were to have a baby,
that's my brand.
Designing my own line and designing
for another company is a lot of work.
There's a lot of late nights.
There's a lot of weekends.
But to know that I've worked so hard
all these years and actually it's paying off,
and I'm here, and I've been recognized
for it, it's amazing.
I started fencing four years ago,
and I am a fencing addict.
I can't get enough of it.
In fact, the official language
of the sport is French.
So, this is really very, very thrilling.
- Hi-yah!
- I invited Heidi here for some fencing,
and finally, I can teach her something!
How many years
have you been doing this, Tim?
- Only four.
- I think I can pick this up in no time.
Hi-yah!
I have been in dozens and dozens
and dozens of bouts,
and I've won once.
I won against a 9-year-old girl
who was about 4 feet tall.
Aria.
I'm sorry, Aria.
Tim, what is taking you so long?
I'm coming, I'm coming!
Alright already!
Get it done
Okay!
I got it, I got it.
Hey, y'all,
let's get this challenge going.
This assignment is crazy.
We have seven hours to make a look,
and we have to use leftover fabric.
I'm going to make a jacket dress.
I just want to focus on the form of it.
Last night, a lot of the fit
gave them questions.
I have to focus on getting this jacket
looking nice and right.
There's a lot of pressure on having it
delivered in seven hours.
I'm walking on a thin line.
I got to be smart
and not try to bite off more than I can chew.
- Jonny, here's more stripe.
- Thank you, baby.
I finally got good feedback
after the collaboration with Megan,
and I'm, like, ready to take this next one
and run with it.
I loved my leather with the flow,
so today, I'm going to stand out
by, like, bringing, like,
the feminine side of Jonny.
And no one's really seen that yet,
but it's there.
What are you making, Will?
- I'm making a high-waisted crop skinny
- Pants?
Yeah, 'cause they wanted to see
some more from me.
So, I didn't just want to do
another pretty dress.
So, I'm going to give them a draped top
and sequin pant.
Oh, cool.
My pant is stolen fabric
from the failed Troy and Josh collaboration.
I thought, why not show my love of glamour
in that kind of Old Hollywood aesthetic?
And also show the judges how to make
what they now consider an ugly fabric
to be something that is fashion.
What about you?
I'm doing, um
this, like, crop top and a skirt.
Oh, nice. Are these pieces
that you've made before,
or are you doing them for the first time?
No, I Who has time
Who is doing for the first time?
Nobody's, like, designing something
from scratch today, I feel like.
Oh. I am.
I'm giving them an accessible look
that represents me.
I need to be on my "A" game, because
I haven't gotten any critique
for the past three fashion shows,
and they need to get to know me
and my brand more
to stay in this competition.
I am from Israel.
I love my country. I love where I'm from.
Growing up in Israel
makes you tougher for life.
I served two years in Israeli air force.
My great-grandfather was
a very well-known tailor in the village,
and he would make clothing
for all the important people in town.
He was killed in Auschwitz.
I really feel a huge responsibility
to continue this legacy.
My brand's name is Rinat Brodach.
I started off as a women's wear brand,
and it evolved to gender-neutral.
I don't think there should be
limitations on fashion.
People need to be curious in life,
and that's what my clothes
are here to provide.
I want to make my great-grandfather proud,
finish what he wasn't able to do,
and I feel like God has really prepared me
for this moment.
I had to eat shit before I got here.
Does anybody have
any thin, white fusing?
Uh, yeah.
- Can I use it?
- Yeah. Sure.
- Thank you so much.
- You're welcome.
I'll share the million dollars
with you, Esther.
Thank you!
¡Ay, Dios mío!
It's like $500 sitting right here.
I'm going to make a pant similar to the one
I showed on the runway yesterday.
And then I'm making the flowy,
asymmetrical cape top.
I haven't won any assignments yet.
This is a big opportunity.
I came here to win.
I did not come here to go home.
I'm going to make it different enough
to where I can show
that I'm evolving as a designer,
but not too different.
I don't think this is the time
to really start experimenting,
when we only have seven hours.
Stand up.
Today,
I'm going to make a skirt and a top.
Both are completely deconstructed
and falling open off of the body.
And then I'm painting over it.
So, I have a big day today.
Even Esther's pins are black.
The model has a bigger breast
than I usually work with.
So, I take it as a chance to make a dress
accessible to different sizes of breasts.
Generally, my designs take more time,
because they're often very elaborate.
To do a whole outfit in only seven hours,
it's a bit crazy.
Aah!
- Did I do..?
- Oh, you got plastic on it now?
One iron down.
God, I'm making a dress!
I'm making my cape dress.
They are always in collections,
and pieces that you do all the time.
And I'm using color.
- I'm learning.
- We know. You're doing good, Bebé.
- Mm-hmm. Keep it up.
- Thank you.
I had the fear
of not knowing how to sew,
but fear is really necessary to grow.
I'm going to learn this,
because it's a limitation,
and I'm a fighter, I'm a warrior.
I just have to do it.
Look how the thread goes on
the other machines, and then you can copy it.
- That's how I learned it.
- Thank you.
I have no problem
with helping people.
This is a design competition.
That's what I want to win by.
You know what I mean?
Not because somebody
doesn't know how to sew.
Hola, Papi, watch out now.
Yeah, I don't touch thread.
I definitely think
that I know him now
also on, like, a human level
more than just Sabato the designer,
'cause, you know, he talks a lot.
One of the few people in life
that can over talk me.
- Ji Ji baby, what you doing?
- Sabato!
Making a jumpsuit.
Still working on it!
Shut up!
- What time is it?
- Noon.
Okay. So, you see?
It's nice to use red thread
when everybody's doing black and white.
Yeah, 'cause nobody will touch it.
Nobody has time to change the thread.
Sabato's moving so fast.
I've never seen him move so fast
in this whole competition.
I'm glued to this machine today.
There's no cigarettes happening today.
- God, why do people sew with fabric?
- Why did you choose it, then?
- You know what?
- Yeah, what?
I actually have never sewn fabric.
I just didn't realize it would be
- Oh.
- a bitch.
Why did I do this?
It's miserable to sew and miserable to cut.
I'm not used to it.
- I feel like a caveman.
- Usually, I'm just like
and this one's like
I'm freaking out,
because anyone can go home.
The time crunch is real.
This is my second chance, and I have
to fight for my life at this point.
It's do or die.
Ah! Ah! Ah!
- You okay?
- Ah, my toe, my toe.
- I'm so sorry!
- Ahh!
Ji is a cut-toe competitor.
Oh, my God.
Are you ready for this, Tim Gunn?
You're going to get some booty whoopin'.
# Well, quit your talkin'
Now it's time for action #
# So, put your money where your mouth is #
I'm ready.
I'm not loving this.
- Loving what? The crotch thing?
- Yeah.
- It's about protection.
- No, but, why would it be on the outside?
This also, I mean, if you have this out,
pom pom, little foxtail, something.
- Like, to have this
- Well, we're not
It's a bit I don't know, it looks
a bit silly back here.
We're not, um, shy about the function.
We're perfectly willing to let it show.
And this uniform has a very long,
centuries-old history,
and the reason it's white is because
- You see the blood better.
- Exactly.
See? Beauty and brains.
- Alright, so
- Okay.
- En garde.
- En garde!
You know what? You really are a natural.
Right heel
You're pushing yourself
off the ball of your left foot.
Push push push
- You ready to go backwards?
- Yes.
It's the opposite. Push off
You must look serious while doing so.
You must.
And this is a workout for the body
and for the brain.
- Here! This!
- Yeah.
- Feel that muscle.
- You have flexibility.
- Ooh. Heidi, that's some booty.
- Yeah.
Wow. En garde, Heidi.
###
# My head's a mess #
# I'm all distressed #
# I just want to get out and see the world #
Tim told us we have seven hours
to create a look
that will impress the judges
and show our fight and our determination.
There are no words to describe
what a platform like Amazon could do
for an emerging designer.
So, everybody feels the pressure.
# Don't judge me
I'm not perfect #
# I'm a human just like any one of you #
# With a dark side and shades of groovy #
Oh! You took my red off?
- No, it's still on there.
- Oh.
Hi, everyone.
How's it going, TG, TG?
Good. I'm here to check in with you,
but I'm not doing Tim talks.
I'm doing what I'm calling drive bys.
Okay, TG.
- Okay.
- Thank you, Tim.
How's Megan?
I'm doing good. So, I have this cape top
I like the color blocking.
I think it's really cool.
You know what I'm learning here?
That less is more.
- You certainly don't want to overdesign.
- Yeah.
You also don't want to under design.
I'm taking last night's critique
really to heart.
Good.
I don't want to just come
with another beautiful gown.
- No, you don't.
- So, I've done a tailored pant.
You know, disco, very fun.
- Still very me.
- Yeah.
And I'm going to do a draped top,
something that is still very me
but still pairs very well
back to the trouser.
- You're pushing it. I couldn't be happier.
- Thank you so much, Tim.
I'm doing a tailored jacket dress.
My sleeves are different.
They're from a coat.
So, they're like the fuller sleeve
on a nice, slender body,
accentuating the waist.
So, oversized?
Not oversized.
It's tailored, but the sleeves are oversized.
- Okay.
- Because they're from a men's coat.
So, I believe the contrast
will show them, uh
my aesthetic but in a snapshot view,
since we only have seven hours.
- Show them what you've got.
- Yes
- This is that opportunity.
- Yes.
I think from my critique yesterday
with the judges,
I have to give this 2,000%,
because I am fighting for my life right now.
I'm making a jumpsuit,
and the silhouette is going to be
I want it to be like
an East meets West kind of thing.
- Well, that's you.
- Yeah, exactly.
- It's a top and a skirt piece
- Oh, they're separates.
- Separates.
- Okay.
And this one goes completely asymmetrical
and kind of gives, like, the idea
that it's like cut wrong,
and this kind of has, like,
a deconstructed feel to it.
Wait a minute. You want it to look
as though it's cut wrong?
Yeah.
I'm all for asymmetry, but it just
it needs to look beautiful.
- Yeah, definitely.
- You know?
As opposed to just kooky.
- I will make a dress.
- Okay.
It has a bit of
pleated draping in the front
That sounds good.
so it's more accessible, I think,
for a wider range of women.
- But, I mean, it will be an Esther dress.
- Well, it has to be.
- You can't go off-brand.
- Yeah, it has to be.
It's very you, Sabato.
Hi, Tim. It is, huh?
But, you know it feels more feminine.
It's what Paris is doing to me.
So, I'm shifting from avant-garde
into fragility
I'm sewing, and I'm growing.
You are. I agree.
This morning, I came in,
I grabbed this print,
which I'm excited about.
I want to show some range.
I've been doing a lot of leather,
and I don't want to be pegged
as just the leather designer.
You know, the only thing is, this stripe
is so branded with Megan.
It's kind of like this Victorian dress.
I think it's gonna look like the bride
of, like, Beetlejuice,
in a way in a chic way.
Your confidence gives me confidence.
- Awesome. Cool.
- Okay. Carry on.
- Want to see something?
- Yes.
So, I'm making a skirt
that's gonna be with a crop top
made out of denim in the same fabric.
With a crop top?
Well, to basically hit the exact line
where it ends.
Okay. Are you doing enough with the top?
Um, we'll see. Hopefully.
- Carry on.
- Thank you.
I see the grit that we want to see.
I see the fire. I see the determination.
I couldn't be happier.
Show them what you've got.
- Thanks, Tim.
- Thank you, everyone.
I'm stressin'.
Oh, Troy, can I finish?
- Can you use that one, please?
- No, because I have to change the thread.
I changed the thread on this one.
- You took the red off?
- Yeah.
- Guys, can I ask a favor?
- No.
Can you leave this red thread here for now?
Anything you want, Sabatino.
Because, you know, Troy,
I did not appreciate that.
- I apologize, but
- Okay.
When they send me home, I can't say
I got up to give Sabato the machine.
He wanted his machine back,
but there was no way I was getting up.
You see a thread is there,
so take another machine.
Total B.S., but you know something?
He's gonna get what you deserve.
I don't know, I just think
the energy here is bizarre.
Like, I don't know.
People are, like, stressing out.
Maybe certain people
can't handle the pressure.
I think it takes, like, a certain kind
of human being to really deal with this.
Tim said that we have to fight for our lives,
that they're not seeing the "fire" in us.
Well, this is the fire.
# It's all on fire #
# It's all on fire #
The studio is not big enough for all of us.
So, how many steps can you do
forward or backwards?
- Is there a rule?
- No.
So, I can, like, go
I can push you all the way against the wall.
And if you do, you get the point.
Let's do it.
Okay. Three points.
En garde
Fence.
Oof. That was excellent.
Thank you.
En garde fence.
You got it.
- You're making me win right now.
- No, I'm not.
I'm going for blood.
Alright, en garde.
Fence!
This is a real sword fight.
Oh.
- Girl power!
- I'm really impressed.
Because in modeling,
when you do a lot of catalogue,
you have to do the two step forward,
two back.
So you get a little wind in the hair.
You're a natural athlete,
and I'm envious.
###
Oh
I spilled it all over the floor.
- Are you using paint?
- Yes. Like, actual paint.
Whoo!
I up
the stripes in the front.
Well, they're not like I don't know how
to line them up with darts and stuff.
I'm not sure about that choice.
To me, that fabric, you know,
looks very Megan.
Are you going to put
Is there something here or nothing?
There's nothing there.
It might be an eyesore.
- Hey, guys.
- Hi!
- Where's my girl?
- Hi!
They're like, "You guys have seven hours
to make a gown," and la la la la la.
If you want, we can go to the, um
the other room and get dressed.
- Oh, you're already naked. Okay, great.
- Yeah.
Great. Okay.
Alright, turn around.
I cannot remember
the last time I made a dress.
People are gonna see this,
and they're gonna be like, "What happened?"
- Just say, "I've evolved."
- The reinvention tour.
Oh, my God. I freakin' love it!
I really love Megan as a person.
I think her looks
so far into the competition, they're
looks that already exist in the world.
Like, go Google, like,
a nice symmetrical top.
Like, I've seen that look.
Aside from length, they look amazing on her.
I'm really happy with the fit.
And, um I think they look great.
The pants were ready.
She looks just killer in them.
But my top is not.
I need to finish on time.
This is the biggest opportunity of my life.
I cannot mess this up.
Here it is. Yeah, can we make it
like a strong cat eye?
Not super tied back,
but, like, a little, like, messy.
Can you walk for me?
Wonderful.
When's the last time I had my face
up a girl's dress?
- Are you gonna ask me?
- Last night
I realize I've bitten off
more than I can chew.
I will not have time to execute
the dress part of this jacket dress.
I will try to fake it.
I remember this dress I had designed,
called my three-minute dress.
Not only does it take no time to make,
but pretty flowy and easy.
So, it fits under the structure
of the jacket.
- Let me just press that really quickly.
- Okay.
Five minutes, guys!
That's the five-minute warning!
Okay, perfect.
- Is that good?
- Yeah. Push it in, okay?
Alright, designers, I told you
that you have seven hours,
and our seven hours is up.
I ran out of time finishing.
At this point, it's just full commitment.
I'm just hoping for the best.
Okay. Let's do it!
Hi, Tim.
- Hi, Tim.
- Hello.
Judges, thank you so much for being here.
Yesterday, there was a lot of talk
about the designers showing you
what they're made of.
We need someone who demonstrates
that they have the grit.
So, I wanted to give them an opportunity
to prove themselves to you.
They designed in one day.
They did not have any seamstresses. No help.
They had to do everything by themselves.
I mean, we're putting one million dollars
behind one of their brands, so
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
We really need to know that they have
what it takes to succeed.
I like the sound of that.
- Yeah. - Yeah.
So, thank you again.
And Carine couldn't be here today
because, as you know,
- it's couture fashion week
- Right.
and she had to attend
a lot of the shows today.
- Watch party.
- Yeah, let's all watch together.
- Oh, it looks beautiful.
- Doesn't it? Yeah.
Oh, my my nerves.
Let's start the show.
###
# Ooh #
- Oh! Here we go.
- Ooh, yay!
Yes. So graceful.
# Been around the block a couple of times #
# That don't mean I gotta get wise #
I like this.
- Nice top, huh?
- Yeah.
- Very nice.
- I like the color combo.
# Ain't no sense in crying, no, no #
Oh, and I like how it's open
on the sides there.
I like the top.
# Pardon my French, but, honey,
je m'en fous #
The only issue for me is
the elastic on the waist.
- The pant looks so expensive
- Yeah.
- That part makes it look cheap.
- I know what you mean.
But listen, for one day
- It's very good.
- It's great. Yeah.
# Ain't no shame #
- Yeah.
- Beautiful.
# Watch me do my walk, walk, yeah #
- Oh
- Bebé!
This is sexy.
I'm going to fight in court
right now.
It's just a great look.
# Gonna do my walk, gonna do my walk
Ooh #
It looks nicely made.
It just feels a little bland.
It's nothing new, but it's not bad.
# Heels above my shoulder #
I think the twist is the only thing,
really, that's saving it.
I mean, it's the only thing
that's interesting, for sure.
But not everybody can wear that.
She can come over every day.
###
It looks like Ji.
- Yeah, it's very Ji.
- It's all Ji.
I don't know, this is not
my most favorite of hers.
I think it's cute and easy.
I think it's sellable.
I think it's okay.
I don't think it's fabulous.
But I love the comfort value. It's easy.
Every woman can wear this.
- It's like middle of the road for me.
- You know?
- Lord.
- It looks great.
Don't say, "Oh, Lord."
# Party all the time
Partners in crime #
# Put our hands up #
# Just turn off this clock #
# Party all the time #
- Oh.
- Looks beautiful.
Thank you.
# Feelin' on top under the neon lights #
- Wow!
- I'm very into this.
- I like this.
- I really like this.
# Now it's camera action #
# Feel the attraction #
# Never wanna let go #
I think it gives you another understanding
of what he's about,
- beyond kind of the leather jacket.
- Yep.
'Cause it still feels like the same girl.
- It feels like the leather family.
- Yeah.
The whole look is good.
And I do think it cuts through the noise.
- I agree. It's cool.
- I think it's more of a point of view.
It's feminine,
but it's rock and roll too.
- It's versatile, more so than we realize.
- Yeah.
- Beautiful movement.
- Yeah.
# Here's to all my people
who party all night long #
# Party all the time, we are the line #
Fly, Lilly, fly. Yes!
# Under the neon lights #
This isn't my favorite dress of his,
but I would wear this dress.
# Under the neon lights #
I don't think he took a huge risk here
- He didn't take a risk.
but it's very him,
and I could see women wearing this.
I wouldn't. These kind of things
I feel like are too boring.
So proud of myself.
And you should be.
# Under the neon lights #
- Wow, this is so beautiful, Troy!
- Thank you, thank you.
# Show us what you got
Show us what you got #
Wow. It looks like someone
rolled in it in the bed.
The proportion of the jacket
is weird to me.
# Steady rockin' #
Could you walk and take off the jacket?
- What happened?
- Who stopped her?
There is a dress under there,
so we'd like to see that.
# Show 'em what you got
Show it off on the dance floor #
Can I see you raise your arm?
For me, there's no design here.
And now, put your jacket on.
# Go back and show this #
# Like you a soldier #
I mean, look at the back.
It's ill-fitting and super snoozy.
- Get it, Troy.
- Very powerful, confident.
# Me and my girls #
# Takin' on the world #
# Sundays we can stay in,
but it's magic going everywhere #
Wow!
Yeah, the paint did work out
in the end.
I'm so happy you used it.
I like that.
It's interesting.
# How many girl does it take to screw in
a black light up in a swag club? #
# You sure could illuminate this place
Crazy ravin' and raise it up #
That's paint.
- Oh, wow.
- Yeah, he painted over it.
This is cool.
- I really like that.
- Love the skirt.
# I can hear the jammin'
I just dance and my dancin' make it stop #
He went for his imagination, but he also
made it commercial and wearable.
I like it, but I think it's a little bit
too complicated for a selling purpose.
- It's so beautiful.
- It looks amazing.
Thank you so much.
# We like to go run this town #
# See what kind of fun we can get in now #
# Party, party, make the club go pow #
# All my girls and we screamin' now #
You can ring my bell any day.
# Me and my girls make the world go round #
# It's all about us
We're the queens of the town #
There is a taste level problem.
And the top could have been good,
I'm telling you,
but, Will, I can't believe I can't believe
that he came out with this pant.
It's like weird party clothes.
Back in the day, yeah.
I mean, that's a shocker.
The combination
a fabric is such a weird choice.
No, it's not good.
It's just tacky.
Well, at least I will say,
I know what he's about.
I agree.
- Rock and roll!
- You did it, girl.
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
# You're a superstar #
# Now what everybody's waiting for
is what you are #
There's more flow to this.
More volume.
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
# Ready, steady, go #
The waist is heaven.
It is. The waist is really heaven.
That is beautiful.
No, no, no, I love this one.
The silhouette is divine.
Beautiful.
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
And did that in one day.
That's wild.
That's incredible.
I really like that she brought in
the epaulet detail
- and the cuff detail
- Mm-hmm. And here too.
She's definitely got an aesthetic.
Yeah, I agree,
from a brand perspective
Absolutely.
- Beautiful.
- Yeah. That's stunning.
Yay to Esther!
# Uh-oh, uh-oh #
# You're a superstar #
Guys, you were beautiful!
Bravo, bravissimo!
- Hello there.
- Hello.
Going into this final showdown,
I expect a certain amount of feedback.
And I'm ready.
So, you guys had a fun day today?
Mm-hmm.
I think that fashion is
an extremely hard business.
You have to have the fight.
Being able to succeed under pressure
is so important in fashion.
For a lot of you today, your hard work
really resulted in a lot of glamour.
- Well done.
- Thank you.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next great global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that walk in the fashion show.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
The winner's look will be available
immediately on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
I want to remind you that any number
of designers can go home at any time,
and a conversation can change everything.
- Right, Troy?
- Yes.
We discussed each of your looks.
Based on the fashion show,
we made some decisions.
but they're not necessarily final.
We have thoughts and some questions
for some of you.
Rinat, we want to talk to you.
- Hey, guys.
- Hi.
- How's it going?
- Hola. So, how was this for you?
It was good.
I planned a little bit last night.
and I had this vision
of this businesswoman getting up
to go to work in the morning
and going to her law firm,
and I wanted her to be
sophisticated and sexy,
and still after work be able
to go out and party.
You're really speaking my language.
This is something I do
at my own brand as well
is really rethinking
how women are dressing for work,
and I thought you cut the skirt really well.
- It was all piping inside too.
- - It was nicely made.
Yeah, it looked really,
really beautifully made.
I definitely think that women
would want to buy that.
Does it exist already? Yes.
But I think people would still buy it.
Naomi, what do you think of her look?
You can do more.
- You played it safe.
- Yeah.
Go beyond. Do it to your best.
- Let's see who you are.
- Exactly. Thank you.
I can pick up on that Israeli,
effortless girl within you
Thank you.
and I wish that I had gotten
a little bit more of that.
You know, the skirt and the top,
they were very stiff.
I would love to give it another layer
that also had this, like, ease to it.
Throughout the competition,
you've coasted under the radar.
I'm not sure I have a clear of a sense
of what you're about.
- So, what's it gonna take, Rinat?
- I'm going to fight.
You've got to roll up those sleeves
if you had any.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
- No.
- No.
Rinat
You're making the cut.
Thank you.
Megan, we want to talk to you.
- Hi, guys.
- Hi, Megan. - Hello.
Megan, tell us about your accessible look.
I don't know if you guys remember
the Fly Girls during In Living Color
Do I remember?
I wanted to be them.
So, yeah! So, I wanted a classy Fly Girl
without having a lot of elements
to the design.
- I mean, if that was available
- I would buy it.
- I'd buy it too.
- Aaah!
- It's very cool.
- I don't normally like
the pants that gather on the bottom,
but I like the way you don't sit
and have the ribbon
- Yeah, the ribbon makes it special.
- I like the tie.
And now that you explained to me that it was
a sophisticated Fly Girl,
I understood about the elastic on the waist.
- So, I love it.
- Thank you so much.
You had me at "Fly Girl."
I love that top.
I love the shape.
I thought it was really flattering.
I thought the pants were very cool.
- I would wear that for sure.
- It was really effortless.
It had a lot of things that we know you for,
but you also took a risk
and made something
a little bit pushed in shape.
- I think it really spoke volumes about you.
- Thank you. I appreciate that.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
- Nope.
- No.
- Megan
- Yes.
- you're making the cut.
- Thank you!
Thank you, guys.
But before we make our final decision
on today's winner,
we want to speak to a few more designers.
That's okay.
Thank you.
Jonny, we want to talk to you.
Go, Jonny.
Hi again.
Hi again!
- Jonny, tell us about your look today.
- So, my brand SKINGRAFT, back in L.A.,
it's kind of like this gothy, progressive
directional brand.
And so, when we used that stripe
the other day,
I was like, I know what my version
of the stripe would look like
if I wasn't on collab.
And I was even joking with Tim, I was like,
"She's like the daughter of Beetlejuice."
Or something like
you know, but
that dress is exactly what would go under
one of my jackets.
I loved your outfit today.
Awesome.
I just loved the ease.
And stripes are not easy to wear,
but it worked on that dress.
I'm very proud of you, Jonny.
Thank you so much.
That really means a lot to me.
You've really taken our notes
and soared with them.
Like, this is the feminine version
of who you are.
I thought the seams were so beautiful.
- I loved it so much, and I want one.
- Thank you.
And it really was so gratifying
to see how much you've evolved.
You know, the femininity,
the kind of gracefulness in it.
It's just one of those dresses
that's a no-brainer.
Mm-hmm.
Even though it's kind of simple,
it's still a head-turner.
- Yeah, it's cool.
- When a girl walks in the room,
you follow her, because it's special.
I love the shape of it.
I love the sleeves.
I love how you changed the stripes
a little bit up here.
It's not too much.
Because it could be very quickly
You know?
Again, it's not.
It still looks super sophisticated.
Everything was just perfect, if you ask me.
Awesome.
Judges, Jonny and Megan
were our favorites tonight.
- Have any of you changed your mind?
- No.
- Jonny
- Mm-hmm.
You are the winner today.
I'm so happy for you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Ahhhh!
Oh, it feels so good to win.
I came here to win, but, like,
after I got all the critiques,
I kind of forgot that it was a possibility.
Aaah! I feel so good.
Your look will be immediately available
on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
- Thank you so much, guys.
- Thank you.
Thank you so, so much.
Whoo!
Thank you.
- Yay!
- Good job.
Troy, we want to talk to you.
- Hello, Troy.
- Hi, everyone.
Alright, Troy, how was this under-the-gun
pressure cooker for you? How was it?
I'm used to doing a lot
and, like, trying to challenge myself,
so, I wanted to give you guys
the best impression of me.
The woman I was thinking of
was that power woman.
She's looking for ease
but still wants to exude her power,
and that's where the jacket comes in.
Are you happy with it?
I love the concept of it, but in seven hours,
I wanted to, like, see how much
I can get done to show that.
Are you happy with it?
I was Yes, I'm happy with the
I'm happy with the idea that I attempted.
- Troy
- Mm-hmm.
It all sounds lovely, but your words
were now to us you "attempted."
You liked "the concept."
These words is not sounding sure
of what you're doing.
And this is how your clothes look unsure.
I am sure about my looks.
- You're a tailor.
- Yes.
That's not what I saw in your outfit,
in your jacket.
It is difficult to put your arm with a dress
with a sleeve inside the jacket.
If you have a sleeve
that is like this wide,
and then you have to get all that fabric
into, like, a skinny
As a model, that would be my nightmare
to have to model that outfit.
I think the biggest problem for me is that
I really don't think
that we've seen anything,
whether in this assignment
or any of the past assignments,
that led me to believe
that there is a brand there.
It's just not at the level as a lot of these
other things that we're watching walk down.
It's just not there.
I don't know. I disagree.
I believe I am at the level.
But at this stage of the competition,
there's a lot of pieces, I'm like, that's Ji,
that's Esther, that's Sabato.
Like, I can see who's who.
I'm just not seeing you.
It's a shame to me, because, like, you knew
that your booty was on the line.
I was not going to give you that next chance,
if you remember yesterday.
I wanted them to be right.
We're rooting for you. We are.
You let us down.
I I need to be here. Like
This is this is my only shot.
And I know I have it in me.
The more feedback I get, it takes off
that hard exterior that I assumed I knew.
You can't just take in our criticism
and our guidance
to make you into a designer.
No, but it refines me.
Do you understand
what you just said?
That's what it sounds like, though.
- Judges, have you changed your mind?
- Mm-mm.
No.
Troy
I'm sorry. You're not making the cut.
- Sorry, Troy.
- It's alright.
Hopefully this is a new chapter for me.
It's definitely taught me how committed
I could be at a task.
Even though I know it's impossible,
I'll still reach for it.
You know when you said earlier
this was your last shot? It's not.
The world is your oyster, as they say.
- Yeah.
- Get back into the game.
- Yeah, yeah.
- I wish you good luck.
I think it built a better me.
Like, the experience wasn't in vain.
Alright. Bye, guys.
Oh
I hope this opportunity makes
a lot of changes in my life.
Bye, guys!
- Bye!
- Bye!
It's hard to see someone go,
but as a reminder, more than one person
can go at any time.
Will, we want to talk with you.
- Hi, Will.
- Hi.
Will, tell us about your look today.
Coming off of last night's critique,
I wanted to challenge myself,
try something new.
I don't do tailored pants, so I made
a high-waisted pencil pant.
Why can't you do pants?
I don't normally cut a pair of pants
traditionally.
I don't think that you should have done
that pant.
This assignment for you was like,
fight for your life, right?
And, like, "this is who I am."
And so, I just don't think that it was
the best choice
to go and try something new.
I actually didn't hate the top.
Like, I thought the top was really beautiful.
But it was like put together
that made it a different decade
but, like, I don't think that
that's the vibe that you were going for.
- It wasn't the total intention, and I
- Tell me who your customer is.
I was actually really inspired
by the model that I've worked with.
She's very young. She's very spunky.
She is a curvy model.
So, when I thought about a pant,
I did the high-waisted pant
and I did a crop pant, so that it would help
to elongate her legs.
To me, like, when I'm thinking about
what you've done in the past,
I feel like they're all going to some disco
many, many years ago.
I don't feel like this is now.
Consistently, you are that, like,
party girl, you love lamé.
I really get what you're about.
But I think there is a taste level problem.
You know, the top was very nice.
But it lacks sophistication and refinement.
Will, based on what you showed us today,
you're not making the cut.
How would you change our minds?
Um, the one thing that does ring true
is that you all know that it's me
when it walks down the stairs.
You know that I have an aesthetic.
You know that I have a point of view.
I do have a softness in my hand,
a very technical drape ability
that I haven't seen executed
from the rest of the people here.
So, there is a luxury level
that I can definitely bring,
and I just need
the next opportunity to show that.
It isn't about luxury.
It's about getting basic, simple.
You haven't got simple.
I've had a problem with you
for every assignment.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
Mm-mm.
No.
No.
Will
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
- Thank you. Thank you all so much.
- Thank you.
Aw.
- All the best to you, Will.
- Thank you.
I'm not the winner of Making the Cut,
but, for me, to have anything like this
happen to me in my life,
this is something
that I never could have dreamed of.
Hey, babe. We love you.
I could only just stand true to myself
and what I love to make,
and I did that, and I'm proud
of everything that I did.
- I'm going to miss you, bro.
- Thank you.
It's not the last
that people will hear from me.
- Thank you all so much.
- Aw, bye, Will. - Bye.
Will definitely has a big place in my heart,
and seeing Will leave,
that made me really sad.
If someone doesn't deserve to be here,
then they won't.
We really are trying to find
the best of the best.
It's so real. It's so real right now.
Two people went home.
But it's also making us realize, like,
any of us at any time can be sent home.
And that's like a very real reminder.
How was that for you guys?
Was it a little crazy?
- Hard.
- Hard, yeah.
But are you enjoying your time in Paris?
Are you feeling settled in?
- Yes.
- I love being here.
I'm just beginning to feel settled in.
Yeah, it's wonderful.
Well
Pack your bags, because
We're going to Tokyo!
To Tokyo! Fantastic!
I'm so excited, I'm going to Tokyo!
Tokyo? Wow.
It's like a dream come true.
Rah! There's nowhere else
I'd rather go than Tokyo.
I'm so excited.
I've been on a roller coaster of emotions,
like, "Oh, you just won,"
"Oh, two people went home."
Like, "Now you're going to Tokyo."
Like Whoa.
You're leaving tomorrow.
Whew!
- And Heidi and I will meet you there.
- Yeah.
Thank you! See you soon!
We'll see you in Tokyo!
See you! Konichiwa.
We will see you in Tokyo.
Konichiwa.
Next time, on Making the Cut
Konichiwa, designers, and welcome to Tokyo!
We want you to create
a two-look streetwear mini collection.
It's in pieces! It's like, I have an hour.
You look like you're on the verge of tears.
Ahh, I'm not a streetwear
kind of guy. I'm struggling.
They were absolutely incredible.
It was such a modern take on streetwear.
- I didn't like either dress.
- You were really in your head.
I don't want to see you go.
