Mission: Impossible (1988) s01e04 Episode Script

The Condemned

(People talking in foreign language) (shouting in foreign language) (musicians stop playing) What is this? What's going on? Police.
Get up.
Do what? Hey, get your hands off me.
What in the hell Close your mouth, American! Now, that's better, Mr.
Collier.
Much better.
You will come with us.
(Grunting) (Barney shouting) BARNEY: I haven't done anything! (Theme music playing) (indistinct chatter) They say sailing is just a matter of aerodynamics.
Well, it helps if you know something about the parallelogram of forces.
To every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction.
Right.
There's some material on it in the van.
(Beeping) MALE VOICE (recorded): Good morning, Jim.
Three months ago, an Englishman named George Stanton was murdered in his home in Istanbul, where he was living in exile, apparently on the proceeds of his investments.
A corrupt Turkish police officer, Lieutenant Yusef Hamidou, was rewarded with promotion to captain and control of Istanbul's major prison for his prompt arrest of the alleged murderer.
It was a particularly brutal crime.
Stanton was shot in the face with a sawed-off shotgun.
The Turkish courts have sentenced the alleged killer to death, but we believe he's innocent and that Hamidou himself was somehow involved with the crime.
The condemned man is scheduled to be hanged at dawn three days from today in this prison.
Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it, is to obtain the release of the condemned man and to bring the corrupt Captain Hamidou to justice.
There is one more thing you must be told, Jim.
The alleged killer is a past member of your team and an old friend.
As always, should you or any of your IM force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This disk will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
(Rapid beeping) (hissing) PHELPS: The center of this mission-- Barney Collier.
He's an old friend of mine, and he's Grant's father.
He's been convicted of murder.
He's in a Turkish prison awaiting execution.
MAX: Turkey? Well, that's a long way from anywhere.
GRANT: Well, after Mom died a couple of years ago, I guess that's where Dad wanted to be-- just a long way from anywhere.
PHELPS: The man who arrested him is this man Captain Yusef Hamidou.
He's built his career with corruption and bribery and murder.
We think that he was in some sort of business arrangement with the murdered man.
We don't know what it was; we do know that he expected to make a lot of money from it.
Then it's not likely he's the actual murderer.
But if he isn't, then why would he bother to frame someone else? Yeah, that's one of the answers we have to find.
Now, this lady may be the key.
Lydia Adem.
She claimed to be your father's lover.
She told a judge and jury that he went to the murdered man's house the night of the murder, that he was in a highly agitated state when he came back, that there were bloodstains on his clothing.
That's a lie.
She was lying.
She wasn't my father's lover.
And my father never murdered anyone.
Grant, I don't know that you should be a part of this.
Emotion can cloud your judgment.
The slightest mistake, and your father's life is in the balance.
He's my father.
I need to be a part of this.
Yes, and he's my friend (tapping keyboard) and we're going to get him out of there.
(Indistinct chatter) Two people? Very difficult.
The man I'll be bringing with me is Collier's son.
You make it hard to refuse.
It will have to be this afternoon.
Hamidou will be away.
We'll be there.
That's an honest but unhappy man.
I hope we can use that to our advantage later on.
That's Lieutenant Sirlak.
He was in charge of the prison before he was demoted and Hamidou took over.
Uh take a look over your right shoulder at the lady.
Lydia Adem.
That's right.
She owns this place.
This is where your father was arrested.
(whistling a melody) (door creaks) Barney? Jim? (Chuckles) Jim, is that you? Did you really think we were gonna let you rot in a place like this? (Both chuckle) I'd given up hope.
I've been trying to send messages for months.
Well, one of them finally got through.
- Let me look at you.
- Hell, you quit before I did.
Well, does any of us really quit for good? I got someone else to see you.
Dad? Grant? Are you sick? I'm better now, son.
Where you been, Dad? I missed you.
Well, after your mother died, I needed some time alone.
Son, believe me, I never murdered anybody.
GRANT: We know that.
We're gonna get you out of here.
Oh, sure, tomorrow morning in a pine box.
Barney, you really have been here too long.
You're going out of here on your own two feet.
We've got the team and we've got the technology and we've got your son.
GRANT: These are the pictures we took in Dad's cell.
All right, now, you see, the colors give us the exact contour of every section of the wall, which allows the computer to duplicate the texture onto latex.
That's great work, Grant.
(Machine hissing) Instant wall.
Now it's up to Nicholas and Max.
HAMIDOU: I received no warning of your visit.
What happened to the usual priest? Oh, he's already talked to Mr.
Collier without much success.
He feels since we were Americans, perhaps we could help this man in his great hour of You see, Father Harte and myself teach at the American college in Rome, and we're here on a sort of busman's holiday studying the history of the Byzantine Rite.
- Which is a fascinating subject.
- Mmm.
Unless, of course, you happen to be Muslim.
No, I think if you're Muslim, it wouldn't matter.
I think the Byzantine Rite is fascinating no matter Fathers, please! Now, just what is it you wish of me? Why, to see the prisoner, of course.
Well, I'm afraid that is impossible.
All things are possible with the help of God.
Ah, well, believe me, Father, it would be a waste of time.
The man is to be executed in less than an hour.
- You can see him then.
- Captain, he may only have one hour in this lifetime, but he has an eternity in the next.
We only ask for a few minutes so that he may have a chance to ask for forgiveness.
But, of course, Captain, if it would be better for your records, we could always make our request formally through the American Embassy.
Lieutenant.
Take them to the prisoner, Collier.
Give them ten minutes, no more, hmm? Ah, thank you, Lieutenant.
Captain.
(Scoffs) SIRLAK: Collier.
Priests to see you.
(Sighs) (distant shouting) We are from the mission, my son.
Grant us a little of your time.
It would be a great comfort to me, Father.
(Distant shouting) (door creaks) We'd like some privacy.
Please.
(Door creaks) Give them ten minutes, no more.
- Go.
- We should introduce ourselves.
Nicholas Black.
I'm Max.
NICHOLAS: We can't get you out of here right now, so we're going to do the next best thing.
The British Consul had the place sealed until the estate's settled.
The scene of the crime.
Yeah.
Why don't you start in there, I'll take here.
Okay.
(Door slamming in the distance) MAX: If they can't find you, they can't hang you.
Nothing.
Nothing here.
Hmm.
Treasures of the Cathedral of Saint Sophia.
Hmm.
"A gold and diamond necklace "reported to have belonged to Catherine, tsarina of all the Russias.
" And stolen from the cathedral four months ago.
I think we may just have found the motive for Stanton's murder.
(Door creaks) His mind is at peace.
And we will leave him now to meditate on his sins.
You will not be forgotten, my son.
BARNEY: I pray that your mission will be successful.
(Keys jangling) (door creaks) (gate creaking) (panting) (panting heavily) (car door closes) You're under arrest.
Arrest? Oh, we just called to see Mr.
Stanton, but nobody's answering.
Turn around and put your hands on your head.
(Indistinct chatter) (gate creaks) Key.
(footfalls approaching) HAMIDOU: The cell is empty.
This is your fault, you incompetent fool.
You're in charge of security.
Now if he is not found, you'll be going to the gallows in his place.
Sound the alarm! Search the prison.
Double the guard at the gate.
NICHOLAS: One moment.
-(Alarm bell ringing) - What is it? There's something wrong with this wall.
This one.
We should call the captain.
(Coughing) (Barney groans) Can you make it? I'll try.
(Door creaks) (gate creaks) (distant shouting) (engine revving) This fool says he allowed you to visit the prisoner Collier yesterday.
Uh, well, we thought maybe Collier would give us a lead on the necklace, but he didn't want to talk to us about it.
Get out.
(Door opens, closes) I don't believe you, Mr.
Travis.
I think you are an accessory to Stanton's murder, and perhaps Collier's escape.
Captain, I've told you, we are private investigators.
Employed by who? That information is confidential.
Prisons can make life very ugly for beautiful women like yourself.
PHELPS: Our client is a wealthy private collector of fine arts and jewelry.
Who doesn't care that that jewelry is stolen? Uh, well, the niceties of the law are not one of my client's stronger points.
(Chuckles) Tell me, Mr.
Travis.
Why would your client think, after so much time since the necklace was stolen, you could come to Istanbul and find it? Because an offer was made three weeks ago to sell it to him.
Three weeks ago? Who made such an offer? Well, we don't know.
The offer was in writing.
No name attached.
It simply said, if I showed up in Istanbul, I'd be contacted.
Perhaps, Mr.
Travis, it's time you and I discussed a deal, in the interest of keeping you and your beautiful assistant out of prison.
Barney, how are you feeling? I'm doing just fine, Jim.
You get as much rest as you can.
We're gonna need you.
We're gonna have to be careful.
Casey and I just had an unexpected run-in with Captain Hamidou.
Seems this whole thing turns on a stolen ten million dollar necklace.
MAX: Well, that could explain how Hamidou had expected to become so wealthy.
Exactly.
But now that he's got the scent again, he's dangerous.
What we have to do is put the pressure on Lydia.
We have to force her hand.
We're on our way to the cafe to put a tap on Lydia's phone.
- Ah, Nicholas? - Hmm? You better stay behind.
Yeah.
(Door opens, closes) Barney, you know what we need.
We need you to confront Lydia.
You give me a couple days to get my strength back, I'll confront her.
The problem is, we don't have a couple of days.
(Sighs) Grant? Can you fill your father's shoes? (Crowd chatter) (electrical lines buzzing) (beep) (beeping) (crowd chatter) (crickets chirping) I think I was nine, ten.
Grandma was still alive then.
And I remember, she used to have to take a bus and transfer, take another bus, just to get to our house.
She used to bring Jamie and me candy and presents.
She couldn't afford 'em.
Mom used to get mad 'cause the candy would give us cavities.
Hey, hey, you remember when Mom? Sorry, Dad.
BARNEY: Past couple of years, I thought about all those broken promises.
They buried the woman that I have loved ever since (panting) Oh, hell.
I didn't even know she was dead until a week later.
GRANT: You were doing your job.
You gotta be quiet for a moment, okay? BARNEY: I remember that birthday you were talking about.
It was your ninth.
(laughs) I was on a mission, and I had promised to be there.
By the time I finally got home, your your mother told me that you had stayed awake a long time, because you had something important to tell me, but you fell asleep.
And I had to leave an hour later.
All done.
Well, it's just like I've been trying to tell you my whole life, Dad I love you, man.
I love you, too, son.
And when I grew up I wanted to be just like you.
How'd I do? (music and chatter continue) (opens zipper) (screams) Scream just once, Lydia, and I'll kill you.
(Lydia gasping over radio) - I thought you were - You thought I'd been hanged.
Are you disappointed, Lydia? Why'd you set me up? Why did you send me to Stanton's apartment? You knew he'd be dead when I got there! - No! - You put that shotgun in my car.
No, it wasn't me, Barney.
It wasn't me, I promise.
Then whose gun was it? The man who has the necklace? (laughing): I don't know what you're talking about.
What do you want -from me? -I'll tell you what I want from you.
- No, Barney, please don't! -(siren wailing) -(siren continues wailing) - I'll be back, and you'll tell me who has the necklace, or you'll pay for it with your life! (Siren stops) (Lydia panting) (continues panting) (dialing) It worked-- she's making a call.
(Phone ringing) LYDIA: Hello? Hello? I told you not to call.
LYDIA: Collier was here.
He can't be; he's in prison.
I'm telling you, he was here, he was going to kill me.
Collier wouldn't kill anyone.
He knows I framed him; he knows about the necklace.
All right, Lydia, you'd better come over here to be safe.
All right.
MAN: And make sure you're not followed.
(Horn beeps) (Lydia speaks indistinctly) Here we go.
(Engine starts) (donkey brays) Everything's falling apart.
Calm down.
It's going to be all right.
No, it's not.
Collier's desperate; he could do anything.
Let's go inside.
You take the back.
Right.
(Gate squeaks) We've got to get away from here.
We've got to leave the country now.
Look at my face.
I have to stay hidden till it heals.
We can't take the risk.
Well, let me go, then, please.
I've done everything you've wanted.
I gave you Collier as a scapegoat, I found you this place And now I'm in danger.
He's going to kill me.
He really frightened you, didn't he? Did you tell him about the necklace? No, he already knew.
Just give me my share.
I'll wait for you in Paris.
How can I give you your share until I sell it? I'm frightened.
I'm scared he'll make me tell him everything-- about the necklace, the murder, and you.
I'm frightened, too, Lydia.
That's why (gunshot) you had to die.
(Footfalls approaching) (Lydia groans) Who are you? What has she told you? Enough.
We know about the necklace, Collier everything.
"We"? You don't think I'm in this alone, do you? It really doesn't matter.
(Gunshot) (screaming) (thud) Better check him out.
Oh, Nicholas? Thank you.
(Lydia groans weakly) Who are you? I'm a friend of Barney Collier's.
He was framed, wasn't he? Lydia, you're hurt very badly, and he's an innocent man.
I didn't want to.
Who made you? George.
- George Stanton? - Yes.
He and Hamidou stole the necklace.
But Stanton's the man who was murdered.
No.
He made it look that way.
To double-cross Hamidou? Yes.
George did this to me.
- He's dead.
- Both of them.
Jim, he had extensive plastic surgery, and he was wearing these-- contact lenses, tinted brown to disguise the color of his eyes, which were blue, the same color as George Stanton's.
He was George Stanton.
He faked his own death, he framed Barney, he changed his face, and all to cheat his partner, Hamidou, out of his share of the necklace.
Which is what I presume we're looking for.
Yeah.
Nicholas, over here.
exactly the same as the contact lenses.
- How you doing? - I'm fine, son.
Well, we have Stanton's photo.
How do the frames match? PHELPS: Perfect.
Mm-hmm.
It is beautiful.
They say the diamonds are alone worth ten million dollars.
PHELPS: Ten million and the lives of four security guards Stanton and Hamidou killed when they stole it.
But, Jim, now that Stanton is really dead, there's nobody to clear me.
I'm not so sure, Barney.
Stanton came back from the dead once.
I think it's time for an encore performance.
So, we got a call, and the woman said to meet the man here if I wanted to buy the necklace back, and I realized immediately it had to be Collier.
He's asking a million dollars.
(Indistinct chatter) (man speaking foreign language) Perhaps, uh, there is another way, Mr.
Travis.
You and I could work together.
The rewards would be substantial.
The rewards, Captain? The tsarina's necklace.
It could be yours and mine.
Five million dollars profit each.
And best of all, you could go on living.
But how do we get it from Collier? Collier doesn't have the necklace.
Stanton does.
But Stanton's dead.
Oh, no, Mr.
Travis.
Stanton is very much alive.
Well, if that's true, then Collier is guilty of nothing.
Collier is guilty of being a fool! And he'll hang yet! Don't you be a fool, Mr.
Travis.
Stanton will be contacting you again, and when he does, we'll both be rich men.
Hmm? Nicholas and Max have set up the recording equipment.
As long as you're within 200 yards, they'll pick up everything you say.
Hmm, and I think it's time for a reunion.
Call Lieutenant Sirlak in exactly 30 minutes.
Tell him if he wants to be in charge of his prison again, please show up when we ask.
HAMIDOU: Captain Hamidou.
Captain Hamidou, this is Travis.
I've had a call from our mutual friend.
He wants to meet.
(Indistinct chatter) How you doing there? It's good to be back, son.
Sirlak's taken care of.
-It's all set.
-(beep) GRANT: All we have to do now is wait for Hamidou.
(Indistinct chatter) PHELPS: What I can't understand is how the police could believe the body was Stanton's.
Ah, must have been some vagrant Stanton found somewhere, a man with no papers, no record.
And Stanton killed him with a shotgun blast to the face.
Mm, making identification extremely difficult.
(Hamidou chuckles) Well, yeah, but not impossible.
I mean, fingerprints.
Surely, you must have known.
HAMIDOU: He had no Turkish records, and his fingerprints on file with the British somehow had disappeared.
In fact, it was only today I realized how cleverly convenient that was.
(Hamidou chuckles) Mmm.
Uh, you will stay here.
But Stanton will be expecting me.
You will stay here.
Hamidou? Collier.
I was expecting someone else.
Stanton? You'll be waiting a long time.
He's dead.
(Chuckles) I'm afraid he's been playing games with us.
He's alive.
I can assure you of that.
He spoke to Travis less than half an hour ago.
You're wrong.
It's me who's been playing games.
Why? What do you want from me? I want to make a deal.
The necklace for my freedom (over monitor): and you establish my innocence.
How's Barney doing? Just great.
Hamidou's responding perfectly.
Where is it? BARNEY: Do we have a deal? My freedom? All right, we got a deal.
Now where is it? Uh-uh.
You have to get me there and let me in.
Let you in? Oh the cell.
It's hidden in your cell and it's been there all the time, hmm? (Chuckles) I didn't say that.
Oh, you didn't have to.
And now I'm afraid I have no further use of you.
(Gunshot, glass shatters) What the? Oh, I see.
One of your little games, is it, Collier? You want to play with Captain Hamidou, eh? I do more than play games, Hamidou.
You think you're pretty smart, Collier.
You lied to me.
You double-crossed me.
That's right.
Like Stanton double-crossed me when we stole the necklace.
And killed four guards.
They were expendable and in the way, like you.
(Gunshot, glass shatters) All right, we'll see who's the clever one, American.
You hear me? Hear me?! Time for me to leave, Captain, at least for tonight.
(Gunshot, glass shatters) Show your face anywhere in Turkey and you're a dead man.
The necklace is mine.
I killed for it more than once.
I kill for it again.
Don't try and follow me.
- Okay? - Fine.
I think Captain Hamidou is about to get exactly what he deserves.
Come on, come on, come on! Now get out! It has to be here somewhere.
I know it! Where is it? Where did you put it, Collier? BARNEY: You lied to me.
You double-crossed me.
Yeah, that's right.
Like Stanton double-crossed me when we stole the necklace.
BARNEY: And killed four guards.
They were expendable and in the way -like you.
-(gunshot, glass shatters) The tsarina's necklace.
Motive behind six deaths.
Let's hear that last part again.
(Tape rewinding) That's right.
Like Stanton double-crossed me when we stole the necklace.
What are you doing here? Now get out! Get out! I lock you all in your cells.
It is you, Captain Hamidou, who'll be in a cell, and for a very long time.
You.
You have it, don't you? Is this what you were looking for? It seems I will be governor of the jail after all.
And you will be my first guest.
(Muttering) HAMIDOU: Sirlak?! Sirlak?! Sirlak! Sirlak! Collier set me up! He should be in here, not me! He's the one who stole the necklace! Are you there, Sirlak? I'll kill you for this, Sirlak.
I am the governor of this jail! Do you hear me?! The governor! This is my prison! You're a free man, Barney.
(Chuckles) Thanks, Jim.
Grant, I think it's time you took your father home.
(Barney chuckles) (theme music playing)
