Moomin (1990) s01e04 Episode Script
The Moomins Discover the Island
Moomin
Even you, who always
tries to keep strong, -
will have moments when
you need to shed tears.
In those moments, just
cry your heart out, -
and then you will find that the
sadness quickly disappears.
Come, come here to where I am.
Come and hold out your
little hand to me.
I shall take you to
the world of dreams.
As long as you have an
honest heart, all is well.
Welcome to Ghost Island
Moominmamma suggested
that they go somewhere -
with the boat, and
everyone agreed.
However, even though they
depart today, it still -
wasn't decided where
that somewhere would be.
Mamma, do you plan on
bringing all of those?
Yes, I do.
We're riding on a boat, remember?
But we're going somewhere, aren't we?
Well, we are
We'll be disembarking once
we arrive there, won't we?
I suppose we will.
In that case then, we'll
be building a fire,
while some will want
to drink coffee.
And some will want to
eat pancakes, right?
I suppose so.
The children are coming too, after all.
These are all things
necessary for those.
Are we leaving yet?
Moomin!
Hello, Floren!
That was close.
Not at all.
You need to be careful or else
you might fall and get hurt.
It's fine. More importantly,
are you alone, Floren?
My brother can't go after all.
He says he wants to
finish his blueprints -
within the day,
no matter what.
I see.
That's a shame, he did
think that it's not -
bad to ride on a boat
from time to time.
Hey, aren't we leaving yet?
They'll be done preparing soon.
Are we bringing all that?
Yes. These are all the necessary
things Mamma gathered.
So Moomin, where did you decide to go?
Pappa, have you decided?
No, not yet.
Mr. Hemulen.
Did you find any rare flowers?
None at all. These flowers are
already a part of my collection.
Are you all moving away?
We're going sailing.
Oh, so the owner of that
boat hasn't appeared yet.
Yes.
Even so, why would you need to
bring so much to go sailing?
Dead ahead!
Aye, aye, sir!
Dead ahead!
Hard to starboard!
Dead ahead!
Hard to starboard!
Hard to port!
So Moomin and company
haven't arrived yet?
Not yet.
It's a perfect day for sailing.
I wonder where we're going today.
I don't know.
I hope we're not going too far.
Why so?
Well, I'm not a very good swimmer.
If a storm came and turned the
boat over, I'll be in big trouble.
There's not a hint of a
storm coming though.
Alright, everyone. All aboard!
Mamma!
My!
Snufkin!
Floren!
Alright Mr. Hemulen,
please board as well.
Are you going too, Mr. Hemulen?
Yes.
I heard we'll disembark
if we find an island, so -
I shall go and gather
rare plants over there.
Sniff, hurry up and get on!
There's no more room
Not at all. See, there's
room right here.
Y-yes, well
Hurry up!
It seems like we'll sink if I get on
Don't be silly, one or two more
You see?
It should be alright for
just one more, Sniff.
Right, Pappa?
Well. The waves are
calm today, after all.
I think I won't go after all
Such a coward.
Pappa, let's go.
Alright.
Sniff, we're leaving now.
I'll watch the house while you're away.
I shall protect your house so you
can go with no worries. Take care!
There are pancakes on
the kitchen table.
Do have some if you please.
Thank you!
Sniff should've just come with us.
Sniff can't swim. I can though.
I'm not very good at swimming either,
but I'm not worried one bit.
The sea is beautiful, isn't it, Mamma?
Indeed.
Hm, the wind has stopped completely.
Why don't we use the oars, Pappa?
Right, let's use them.
Snufkin, lend a hand, will you.
Alright.
Try putting some effort
into your rowing, you two.
We already are.
Oh? Then why aren't we moving?
We are! Rather slowly though.
At this rate, we won't
be able to go anywhere.
I know! But we're
already doing our best.
If we're not able to go anywhere, I
won't be able to collect any plants.
Please give up, Mr. Hemulen.
I don't see any land at all.
And not to mention this speed.
The wind shall blow soon, Mr. Hemulen.
Once it does, I'm certain we'll
find at least one or two islands.
There's an island over there, Pappa!
We won't be able to anything
on such a small island.
You're right.
Oh? We're moving even
though no one's rowing.
The wind is blowing again.
Look, it's a beautiful island, Pappa!
It looks like it'll be easy
to land the boat there too.
I think I should find some rare
plants on an island like this.
Thank you, Pappa.
You can just thank me after
you find some plants.
I shall use stones to
make a stove so I can -
serve everyone some
coffee and pancakes.
Children, please gather me some
firewood once we disembark.
Pappa, I'll go swim ahead
with the mooring rope.
All these really turned
out to be useful!
Yes, indeed. Picnics have
to be fun, after all.
That aside, I wonder what
kind of island this is.
Thank you.
Is there anything we can help with?
Let's see
I want to explore the island!
Oh, feel free to do so.
Alright!
What about you, Floren?
I'll help Mamma here.
Mamma, we brought quite a lot.
Ah, thank you, both of you.
Do you think anyone
lives on this island?
I wonder. At this point though,
I haven't seen anyone yet.
I have.
Oh? Who did you see?
A small creature.
Small? How small?
Around my size.
What was it like?
I didn't see it very well.
It hid very quickly within the grasses.
If what My said is true, then
there is someone living here.
You don't believe me, do you?
That's not it. I'm only saying
you might've been mistaken.
3 stamens and 7 pistils.
Oh, this is quite a rare find.
Hm, very interesting
This one looks rare too.
This island is full of rare plants.
What could that be?
What? This is a barometer.
Oh? It's pointing towards 'Rain'.
This must be broken.
You're Hattifatteners, right?
What are you doing here?
I see. This barometer must be yours.
Wh-What is it? Do you have a problem?
If you do, then say it!
What My saw was probably
a Hattifattener.
What? Then this is a ghost island?
Even though they're called
ghosts, Hattifatteners are -
docile creatures so there
shouldn't be any prob
Somebody, help me!!!
That voice just said
"help me", didn't it?
That was Mr. Hemulen's voice!
Shoo! Don't come near!
Somebody, help me!!!
This is amazing! There are
so many Hattifatteners!
Mr. Hemulen
Hey! Help me!!
How did you manage to anger the docile
Hattifatteners this much?
I don't understand
it very well, but it -
seems they're very
upset about something.
Would the Hattifatteners be angry
without you doing anything?
That's not it. Do you think it was a
bad idea that I shook that barometer?
That's probably it!
That barometer might be like
a god to the Hattifatteners.
Well, now!
A-anyhow, just chase these eery
Hattifatteners away, Snufkin!
Even if you say that
Hurry up! Please! I'm slipping off!
Do you have any ideas?
Let me think for a moment.
Hurry up!
Listen closely, Mr.
Hemulen.
Hattifatteners can
neither speak nor hear.
They can't see well either.
However, they're very
sensitive to touch.
Please try shaking the
pole back and forth.
Like this?
Shake it harder!
Harder
See? They're uneasy because
they feel the ground shaking.
They're getting scared.
I can't do this anymore!
I'm going to fall!
Can we really chase them
away just by doing th
Mr. Hemulen!
Ow, ow, ow.
Are you alright, Mr. Hemulen?
What an annoying bunch!
Oh, right. I shall take this barometer.
Wha-I think you'll do better not to
It's broken anyway, they
can't use it anymore.
Why do you think it's broken?
We have such fine
weather right now, but -
this barometer indicates
that it's raining.
Who would've thought we could eat
hot pancakes in a place like this!
This is all thanks to Mamma.
It's all thanks to everyone who carried
all our luggage without complaint.
It's finally pointing
to the lowest reading.
If this is true, then there
should be a storm, right?
A storm?
I told you the Hattifatteners'
barometer is broken.
Mr. Hemulen, that barometer
might not be mistaken.
Look. Look over to the horizon.
A storm may be coming.
In that case, we should
hurry and go home.
Won't that boat sink if we get caught
in the storm on our way, Pappa?
We still have time to make it home.
But it'll be a shame to
go home so quickly just -
when we've found such
an interesting island!
We haven't even gone to the
other side of the island.
I also want to learn more about the
Hattifatteners!
Well, I don't want to know
anything about them at all.
I still think it's best if we leave.
Mamma, what do you think?
I shall support what you decide on.
Alright. Everyone, wait for a while.
Let's stay on the island.
We'll stay for the night?
Perhaps.
Rain will be pouring soon.
Let's hurry and put up the tent.
Tent?
Did you think there was no tent
in the luggage Mamma prepared?
Oh, I see!
Mamma is really amazing!
First, we'll have to take the boat to
a safe place and fold up the sail.
You can let go now.
We've brought it this
far, I don't think -
the waves will still
reach it here.
Well then, we shall
put up the tent now.
No one's exempted from helping!
Ah, that might have been tough
on you, right, Mr. Hemulen?
Oh, no, no, it's alright.
Please rest here.
I'm sorry.
We'll be putting up the tent now.
Once you've rested up, Mr. Hemulen,
can you please tie that rope to a tree?
Just to be sure.
Alright, I will.
Well then, let's go!
Get it together, Hemulen!
Oh?
This is the first time
I've seen this flower.
Oh! This one looks rare too!
Snufkin!
How's the rain?
It's already raining in the sea.
It should be here soon.
Let's go to the tent. We'll get wet.
Yes
What is it?
You can really feel nature, right?
Huh?
To stand in the strong wind and to feel
the rain drawing closer towards us
What a glorious feeling.
Don't you think so too?
Huh? Well Yes.
But I think it's better not to get wet.
You're right.
What do you think the
Hattifatteners are doing now?
They're waiting for lightning to come.
Lightning?
Hattifatteners store electricity
within their bodies.
Electricity?
Oh. It's raining.
This is very strong rain.
I think it shouldn't last too long.
Oh dear, you're quite soaked.
Thank you.
There's nothing to be afraid of.
I'm right here with you.
I think that struck nearby.
I think so too.
It's alright, Floren.
I was able to gather a lot today.
Due to the unexpected
storm, the Moomins -
were forced to stay on
Hattifattener Island.
They quietly waited in their
tent for the storm to pass.
If their boat gets washed away,
the Moomins won't be able to go home
After the storm
passed, Hattifattener -
Island was overflowing
with a pale light.
That's right. The
Hattifatteners have come to our -
tent to retrieve the barometer Mr.
Hemulen stole.
