Mysterious Ways (2000) s01e04 Episode Script

Camp Sanopi

What's that look about?
Man, not in the truck, dude.
I don't poo in the truck.
Why you?
Hey!
I just had a thought.
Uh !
What?
- White water rafting.
- What?
When you're tired,
overworked, frustrated.
A former client of mine
owns this operation.
It's in the middle of nowhere.
So I made a phone
call, booked us a trip.
Thought we both could use a break.
A romantic getaway, Peg?
Please.
Come on, Mole.
Peggy! Hey!
How are you? Nice to see you.
- Good, you too.
- Here's your meds.
- Oh, thank you, sweetheart.
- No problem.
- This is Declan Dunn.
- Declan!
- How are you?
- Pleasure, brother. How you doing?
Alright.
Welcome to base camp.
We're gonna get you all set up.
This is beautiful.
- Yeah.
- Really nice.
- Where's the river?
- The river?
Just a little ways
through there, not too far.
We got the raft all loaded up.
- She's ready to go.
- Okay.
So, take this stuff.
- Why don't you take this?
- Okay.
- There you go.
- All right.
- Are you okay?
- Yeah.
Whoo!
Right.
Is this incredible or what?
It's like heaven on earth here.
No argument there, man.
When do we hit the rapids?
Not much further.
We're here.
Woo-hoo.
Are they going to be big?
This is my first time doing this.
No, don't worry.
Little ripple here, little ripple there.
I don't even think you're
going to get your hair wet.
Well, maybe a little wet.
Hang on, everybody.
Mole !
Look out for those rocks.
Look out !
Paddle, Peg.
Paddle harder.
That's it.
That's good.
Dig deep !
Dig in, dig in.
You all right, Peg ?
Great.
You?
Fine.
You can dodge the road.
Dig in !
You got it with your legs.
Come on, dig in, everybody.
Keep this thing pointed straight.
Mole, stay in.
right, Peg.
Peg, you're all right.
Dig in.
Other way, Peg.
Other way.
Put it.
Hang on.
Whoa, watch out.
Where's Declan ?
Where's Declan ?
I don't know where he is.
Declan !
Dougg's gone too.
Declan !
Declan !
Declan !
Oh God !
You investigate, what did you call it?
- Miraculous phenomena.
- Miraculous phenomena.
Two-toed, front and hind.
Gait looks like a trot.
Two claw prints behind each toe.
White-tailed deer.
Drag marks. It's a buck.
Tracks are fresh.
He's probably still in the area.
A dog?
Oh, geez.
Oh God !
Be careful !
Oh my God, he's not breathing.
Go get Dr. Nader, okay?
Hurry!
Come on !
You can do it.
Come on !
Come
Oh, that's it.
Let it all out.
That's it.
Okay, here.
Just try not to move, all right?
Okay, we're getting help.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Shh, shh, shh.
Lie still. Lie still.
Peggy.
Peggy.
I'm on a raft. I was
You're on a raft?
Yeah.
Dr. Nader !
What happened ?
I don't know.
I think he was on a raft
and it must have flipped.
With a little swim, did you.
I think his leg is broken.
The right one.
You're right.
This hurt ?
I'll take that as a yes.
You're broken ribs, too.
Good, boys.
Get him on the stretcher.
- What's your name son?
- Declan.
Declan ?
God !
We'll have you patched up in no time.
Easy, boys.
Gently !
Put him in, boys, easy.
Lay him on the table.
Thanks, Steve. Mike.
What can I do?
Kevin, we'll need some
water in the spring.
Hang in.
Pain's pretty rough, huh?
Yep.
Yeah.
How about now?
That's nice.
God bless modern medicine.
Amen to that.
There we go.
All done.
You wear that splint for
a couple of weeks or so.
Your stitches on the cut are holding up okay.
You're in great shape.
- Got the water.
- Good.
- Thirsty ?
- Yeah.
Get you some food too.
Tonight's Mexican night.
You like Mexican food?
- Mm-hmm.
Good. Doris makes killer fajitas.
- Where am I?
- Camp Sanopi.
- Sanopi?
- Mm-hmm.
- I had some friends I was with.
- We're out looking for them.
Don't worry, we'll find them.
You just get some rest.
You've had quite a day.
- Do you have a radio?
- Yeah, we're working on that too.
Only it might take a while
to flag down some people.
There's not much in
civilization out here.
There's no one around for miles.
This is me, and you're
over here on the right.
All right.
Is that your dog?
Uh, a little more of an acquaintance.
Long story.
Let me take those for you.
Thanks.
Oh, boy.
How's that?
Yeah.
All right.
There we go.
Thank you.
Comfortable?
About as comfortable as
I'm gonna get, I guess.
I'm Jim.
Jim.
Sorry, Declan.
Nice to meet you.
- Thanks for your help.
- No problem.
What did you do to yourself?
Rock climbing.
Yeah.
It was a pretty nasty fall.
I was out for a couple hours.
Oh, yeah?
Yeah, one of the campers here found me.
- One from the campus from here? Found you?
- Yeah, yesterday.
Just like you.
A little lucky for us, too, huh?
I mean, out here in
the middle of nowhere.
Couldn't ask to be
brought to a nicer place.
That fella, Dr. Nader, is
he the one in charge here?
Yeah, he seems to be.
He's a nice old fella.
He's a hell of a doctor.
I feel 100% better already.
Find him?
No. No sign of anybody.
Really?
Yeah, we checked the river for miles.
No people, no raft.
He didn't find any pieces either, which
means the raft probably wasn't damaged.
Well, that's good.
My guess is the others managed to climb
back on, made it through the rapids.
They're either out looking for you right
now or went back to town to call for help.
How far is it to town?
A very long way, I'm afraid.
78 miles.
It's 21 miles just to the nearest road.
No kidding?
As I said, secluded.
Yeah.
Any luck with the radio?
No. Edna's been working on it all night.
Do you have a car here? Or a van?
No cars at Camp Sanopi.
Everything gets here on foot.
We could carry him down the
road and flag a car from there.
Yes, we could, but that'd throw
us in some pretty rough spots.
My advice is that you couldn't be jostling
it too much in your current condition.
Don't worry, son.
In a few days you'll feel stronger.
We'll help you out of here.
Jim's also eager to get home, so we'll
take the both of you out together.
All right.
My guess is we'll have made radio
contact with someone by then,
so just sit back, take a
load off and enjoy the camp.
There's a lot to offer.
Declan!
Declan!
Clem, did you see him?
No, Peg. I haven't seen him yet.
I don't think he drowned.
I don't know. I still think he just got out of
this river and he's waiting for us someplace.
I'll tell you what.
I'm going to check further up the river.
If you've got to get a hold of me
for anything, just use this, okay?
Okay.
All right. Good luck.
Okay.
Come on, Declan. Where are you?
Camp's been here forever.
My sister says it's the
best camp she's ever seen.
People come from all over the place.
Oh, yeah?
Well, I can see spending
the rest of forever here.
You need to rest yet?
No.
I'm feeling pretty good today, Kevin.
Pretty good.
Good.
You know, they say, uh, Sanopi is
some kind of Indian name or something.
That's right.
It's a mythical creature
made out of pitch.
Pitch?
Yeah, it's like tar.
According to legend,
Sanopi taunted coyote.
Coyote got really angry and
wanted to pick a fight with him.
But when he did,
he got stuck in the tar.
First with his paws when
he tried to grab him.
And then with his teeth
when he tried to bite him.
You some kind of Indian
expert or something?
Yeah, actually I am.
Underground springs feed
it and water is really pure.
Dr. Nader says it has
therapeutic qualities.
Therapeutic?
Yeah.
Really?
Come on.
Lake's not far.
All right.
Nice to see you on the fishing channel.
Trick is either sing the right bait.
My crawler's always
worth his time of day.
You know, Kev, you remind me
of a crazy uncle I used to have.
I used to go fishing with him.
Night before, he'd spend hours
crawling around in the mud.
He was getting mealworms,
crickets, all kinds of bugs.
Like a religion with him.
Was he any good?
Was he any good?
Shoot, yeah.
He was the best.
He tried to teach me how to fish once.
Never had the patience for it.
I can teach you.
It's pretty easy.
That's nice of you, but I don't think
I'm going to be here that long, Kevin.
I'll just watch you.
- You get out of here much?
- Every day.
No, I mean Camp Sanopi.
Your family vacation here a lot?
Well, we live here.
You live here?
Year round?
Yeah.
Just my sister and me, though.
We came here a few years ago.
Took one look at the
camp and decided to stay.
But your parents?
Back home.
Where's that?
Portland.
They like it there better.
Come and sit by my side if you love me
Do not hasten to bid me adieu
But remember the Red River Valley
And the ones that has loved you so true.
So true.
Just remember Camp Sanopi,
and the ones who love you so true.
Thank you, thank you.
Anybody else want to try?
Well, I'll give it a shot, sure.
How do you turn this thing off?
This is something I learned at camp many,
many years ago when I was by your side.
Cumbaia !
Oh, no, no, no, no.
Pork, fish, anyone? Fish?
Declan, more fish?
No, thanks. I'm stuffed.
It's the best meal I ever had.
Kevin gave you a little tour
of the place today, I hear.
Yeah.
It's amazing.
I think I might like to retire here.
Yeah, me too.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
I know the feeling.
I retired here 16
years ago this October.
Really?
You live here full-time, too?
Yeah, we all do, except
you and Jim, of course.
But for the rest of us,
we're here for good.
Wow !
That's what we said the
first time we came here.
Next thing we knew, we just couldn't
imagine living anywhere else.
It's a feeling that grows inside of you.
A tug, I like to call it.
It builds daily until you realize
without question that this
This is where you belong.
S'mores, anyone?
Yeah.
Yeah? All right.
Yes.
Declan !
Declan !
Peggy !
Peg !
She's in the woods.
She's trying to find me.
- Your friend?
- Yeah.
Peggy!
She's close, man.
I didn't hear anything, Declan.
You didn't hear anything? Peggy!
You were dreaming, son.
You suffered a terrible trauma.
That blow on the head may have
rattled your brain more than you think.
I heard her!
Of course you did.
Peggy!
Peg !
I'm sorry, son. No one heard anything.
It was just a dream.
The swelling's gone down considerably.
Lie back for me.
This hurt?
Nope.
You've any luck with the radio yet?
No.
Very strange. I don't know
why it can't reach anyone.
How about this?
Oh, it tickles.
Sit up.
Well, my friend, you're
healing amazingly fast.
Yeah, maybe it's something in the water.
It does have remarkable
therapeutic qualities.
So I hear.
Better than any
medicine I can prescribe.
You ever had it tested?
Why?
See what makes it tick.
Figure it works, why bother?
Good point.
Hey, can you get my cane?
Sure.
Would you mind if I brought
a sample back with me?
Are you into medicine?
Uh, not directly.
I'm an anthropologist by trade.
I do have an interest in
unusual phenomena, you might say.
I see.
Well, this water is certainly unusual,
but we'd like to keep it our
little secret, if you don't mind.
Little secret?
As you've seen, we take pride
in our seclusion out here.
Wouldn't want our beautiful little camp
overrun by some large
pharmaceutical company, would you?
No, sir, I don't guess you would.
Hey, uh, Doc, while I'm
thinking about these things,
since I'm feeling so much better,
do you think you might be able
to get some of the other campers
to help Jim and I to the road?
I'll talk to the others.
Don't you want to get out of here, Jim?
I do, just not yet.
You know I'm kind of
liking it here, aren't you?
I mean, it's cool and everything, but
don't you think these people are little
Hey, um, I wanted to introduce
you to my sister, Janet.
Hello.
Janet, your sister ?
Okay.
Do I know you?
Folks, can I have
your attention, please?
Declan's feeling much better, and,
uh, well, he wants to leave us.
So he's looking for volunteers
to help make the trek up the road.
Anybody up for it?
Jack.
Susie.
You guys help me out?
We'd love to help you, Declan,
but, um, we've got a lot
of chores to take care of.
In a few days, maybe.
Yeah.
What's going on, Doc?
Sorry, son.
Mole! Get back here!
Where you going, dude?
Mole!
Damn.
Mole!
Mole!
Don't you
Don't.
Mole!
Stay!
Stay !
Mole !
Get out of the water!
River's dangerous, son.
Currents are deceptive,
but you already know that.
Better off closer to camp.
Much safer there.
How's the pain this morning?
Better.
Chad and Suzy checked the river.
No sign of your dog, I'm afraid.
Declan, that road's a far way off,
and the trail is full of rough spots.
I wouldn't have had to take my chances, Doc.
It just seems like
Nobody around here wants to help me.
That's where you're wrong.
I've spoken to the people,
and they're willing to take you to
the road when you're feeling better.
How much better I gotta get?
You re-injured yourself
pretty badly last night.
You tore some stitches in your head, and
you put far too much pressure on this leg.
That wouldn't have happened if somebody
had helped me out in the first place.
Son, I'm trying to help you.
I just want to make sure
you're making the right choices.
I just want to go home, Doc.
You will, when you're ready.
- Have I now? I'm ready.
- No, you're not. You're exhausted.
You're hearing voices in your sleep, and
your body's in a severely weakened state.
Declan, I'd hate to see
you end up like your dog.
Gather around, folks! Big news!
Jim has an announcement to make.
Go ahead, son, tell him.
Well, uh after a lot
of thought, I've, uh
I've decided to stay
here at Camp Sanopi.
Yeah!
Dr. Nader says my family's
going to be all right,
and they'll be happy
that I'm here, so, uh
I'm just excited to start my new life
with my new family, where I belong.
Yeah!
Hey, Kev. They're bittin' ?
Just one. Slow day.
Sorry about your dog.
Yeah.
I'm gonna switch to spinner.
Switch to a spinner.
Exactly what I would do.
You see your folks much, Kevin?
They visit sometimes.
They're okay with you being here?
Yeah.
You miss them?
Not really. I like it here better.
You'll like it too.
You just have to give it a chance.
I like it here.
I think it's incredible. I just
I don't want to live here, Kevin.
You know? I miss my job.
I miss my friends. I miss Peggy.
You know how sometimes you think back
to the best time of your life
when everything was just perfect?
Yeah.
When was that time for you?
I don't know.
How about now?
Now?
No.
I've been kind of down lately, Kevin.
For me, this is the best time.
It's just like
I believe anything's possible, you know?
Yep.
I kind of try to live my life that way.
I know what you mean.
It's fun, isn't it? Believing that way.
You bet.
You've always thought like that?
Mm-mm. No.
It's really just been
the last couple of years.
You know what, Kevin?
Come to think about it, now is a
pretty good time for me, I have to say.
See, the thing is, sometimes we don't
know when the best time of our life is.
I didn't know at first.
It's all so weird.
And scary, but
Then Dr. Nader, he
helped me to see that
Kevin!
How's the fishing?
Pretty good.
Terrific.
Declan, have you got a minute?
I'm afraid I've got some bad news.
The folks who volunteered to take
you to the road had to cancel.
Emergency repairs on
the roof of their cabin.
But they said they could
take you in a few days.
How do you do it, Doc?
Do what?
This brainwashing thing. I'm curious.
What is it?
Your easy smile?
Your soothing voice?
Maybe it's something in the water.
Some drug.
Lulls people into doing your bidding.
Is that what it is?
Doing my bidding?
Yeah.
Your mind control on
adults is one thing, Doc.
But when it comes to children,
that really pisses me off.
What are you talking about?
I'm talking about this
little cult you've got here.
People giving up their lives.
Selling off the farm to come
join you in your magical springs.
Cult?
Yeah, cult.
Tell me something.
When people sell off all their worldly
possessions to come live with you here,
who gets the money?
Their loved ones.
Right.
I don't know where you're getting
these strange ideas from, son.
But no one's controlling
anyone's mind here.
Then what's in the water?
I told you, it comes out of the
ground and has therapeutic
Therapeutic qualities,
right, I remember.
We're talking more than just
vitamins and minerals here, Doc.
Look at me. I got a broken
leg, but I'm walking on it.
And feeling no pain.
That's right.
Better than any medicine,
isn't that what you said?
So why don't you want
to know what's in it?
I'll tell you why.
Because it's the key to the
power you hold over these people.
Your little secret gets out,
you're not so magical anymore, are you?
I have no power over these people.
I'm just a facilitator.
Yeah.
Okay.
Next thing you know, you got them
in white sneakers and purple shrouds.
You have no idea what
you're dealing with, son.
Oh, I know exactly what
I'm dealing with, pal.
When I get back to the real world,
you can count on me telling
the authorities all about it.
Have a nice day.
Declan !
Peggy !
Yeah?
Anything?
No.
The search team hasn't
found anything either.
They're ready to call
this whole thing off.
No, not yet.
No!
Not yet.
Don't even try to resist!
Hey, partner.
Hey.
What are you doing?
I've come to tell you goodbye, Kevin.
I gotta go.
It's time for me to leave.
But, I want you to come with me.
Come with you?
Yeah.
Think about it, huh?
Take a little vacation
from all this paradise?
Go visit your folks.
Come on, we'll go back to Portland.
Maybe see a Blazers
game, what do you say?
I can't leave.
Sure you can, partner.
No, uh
I meant
I don't wanna leave.
Fair enough.
Tell you what.
I'll come back here and visit you.
How about that?
Okay.
I'll bring my friend Peggy with me.
You'll like her.
She's good people, Kevin.
She knows how to listen to people.
Maybe you and your sister can sit
down and talk to her for a while.
Sure.
Alright.
I gotta go.
But I'll be back, I promise.
Bye, Declan.
Take care, cowboy.
Nader ? !
Declan, you're back !
I'm not back.
I never left.
There's no out of here.
I've been on that trail for 12 hours,
over the gauge, .
There's no out.
This is the end of the trail.
Take it easy, son !
Don't tell me to take it easy.
- You're exhausted. You need some rest.
- You're right, I am exhausted.
I'm tired to run around here.
You stay away from me !
You stay away from me !
What-ve to done to me ?
I haven't done anything, son.
Is that right ?
What about these people ?
What ? Are you all hypnotised ?
Hey! Get off of me!
Get away from me with that!
Get out of here!
Wait till they find
out about this, Neader ?
For your own good.
Yeah?
He's still asleep.
He doesn't belong here.
Yeah, I know.
I'm used to a fair amount of
resistance at first, but
After a day or so, they
usually come around.
Feel the tug like the rest of us.
I guess there's only
one thing left to do.
You went the wrong way, Declan.
What?
Just follow me.
Come on.
Where are we going, Kevin ?
Follow me. Come on.
Where?
You all right?
No.
Kevin, I gotta tell you, my
My leg's starting to act up.
Good.
What do you mean, good?
What's happening here, Kevin?
Hurts, doesn't it?
Yeah.
Your head's bleeding.
Pain's good.
Without it, you can't really
appreciate all the good stuff.
What are you talking about?
Sorry I didn't walk
out this time, Declan.
First the avalanche, now this.
You're one heck of a
fighter, you know that?
Where am I, Kevin?
Don't worry.
We'll all still be here waiting for you.
Promised you'd come back, remember?
We can go fishing again,
just like we did when you were a boy.
Kevin ?
Uncle Kevin ?
You were 56 years old when you died.
56 and 300 pounds and
smoking two packs a day.
Remember when I asked you about
the best time of your life?
And I told you that
this was my best time?
12 years old running
around in the woods.
Yeah.
Your sister Aunt Janet?
Best time for her was in her 40s.
She looks so familiar.
Why didn't you tell me any of this?
You gotta find your way
on your own, Declan.
Dr. Nader tries to help, but
some people just aren't ready yet.
Like you.
And your dog.
Go on. The foam.
I got him ! I got him !
Thank God you're okay.
Let's get him out of here.
Bring the first aid.
I think your leg is broken.
You may have cracked a few ribs.
Does this hurt?
Are you feeling those aspirin yet?
Radio the hospital. Chopper's on the way.
Thanks, Clem.
Your radio works ?
Of course.
How long was I under, Peggy?
About a minute or so.
We pulled Mole out first.
Hey, buddy.
Who loves you, Moley?
You really scared me.
I thought you were gonna die.
I'm so sorry.
I thought this trip
would revive your spirits.
It did, Peggy.
Just what the doctor ordered.
Yeah?
Good.
