Open Your Eyes (2021) s01e04 Episode Script

Episode 4

A NETFLIX SERIES
[woman whispers] Karo
Karolina.
Open your eyes.
[mysterious music playing]
[tense music playing]
Who are you?
"Dark night, that from the eye
his function takes,
the ear more quick of apprehension makes."
"Wherein it doth impair the seeing sense,
it pays the hearing double recompense."
[tense music intensifies]
[scream echoing]
[man] Sergeant Karol Reiff.
Uh, Officer Janas.
If you could, Julia,
please tell us everything
that you can remember about that night.
About that night?
Yes, about when you lost your parents.
[Reiff] The night of the fire.
Do you remember?
[Julia] Everything happened so fast.
Nothing's inside, but her mind is, well
Don't get so worked up about it.
We understand her condition.
Your patient is in a unique situation.
We know.
Now, Julia, can you please tell us
anything you can remember?
Mm-hmm.
[Julia] I remember smoke.
I tried to push into my parents' room.
Only something was keeping me out.
An ambulance, medics
a doctor.
[distorted siren blaring]
Mm, the the doctor's name was Janek.
And do you have any idea how
or when it happened? I mean the fire.
Do you know how it started?
No.
Didn't the investigation show that?
[Reiff] We are following up on a theory
that the fire was probably arson.
It's possible that this was a murder,
isn't it?
Did your parents have enemies?
Sergeant, Julia has only just remembered
that she had any parents at all.
Stop interrupting us.
Do you remember anything suspicious?
Anything that caught your attention?
Maybe there was a stranger
poking around your home?
[dramatic music sting]
Yes.
Yes, I remember
there was a girl with red hair.
- She was definitely there that night.
- Anything else about her?
Julia is describing a person
from her hallucinations.
[clears throat]
Look, it's true.
I don't know who she is, but
I remember that she was there.
Red hair.
Pale and skinny.
Maybe 15, 16 years old.
We'll look into it.
[Reiff sighs]
Why didn't anyone save them?
How do you mean?
That night my parents were stuck in there,
so how did they save me?
[Julia] What really happened?
We thought maybe you could inform us.
When we arrived at the scene,
you were already outside,
and the doors had apparently been locked.
On the outside.
[tense music playing]
[ominous music playing]
[music fades]
There is no redheaded girl.
I don't know what function
she serves in your psyche,
but there was no one like that
in your life.
Why do you keep insisting
I'm just imagining her?
I remember her just standing there.
Why don't you believe it?
It's not that I question it.
It's about holding reality separate
from hallucinations.
Your mind plays tricks on you,
which is why
taking your meds is important.
You keep saying that to me.
Because I truly just want
what's best for you.
And that means you're going to hear things
you don't wanna hear.
That girl really was there.
You're paranoid, which is understandable
with everything you've been through.
Look, you'd better rest.
This was more stress than you can handle.
I didn't want my concert.
I have oversights sometimes.
Exactly!
[electronic dance music playing]
[Julia] Szymon.
[Julia] Szymon.
[children laughing]
[Julia] Ugh.
Oh, here's our little pianist.
How are you doing?
I guess I'm confused. I don't know.
Don't worry. For me,
that concert was getting a little long.
- Have any of you seen Adam?
- No, he's been stuck in his room.
[coughing]
[Iza] Oh shit. Looks like
there's a virus going around the clinic.
- Maybe that's why you fainted?
- Iza, this is not a virus.
Can't you see what's going on here?
You mean everything
that you've gotten us all into?
What, we're all talking to the police now
because of you?
I'm not trying to be nosy,
but what's going on?
If you're not being nosy,
then stop asking questions!
[electronic dance music playing]
[tablet beeping]
[spits]
[electronic dance music continues]
- [music ends]
- Adam?
Adam?
Hey.
[high-pitched squealing in earbuds]
[volume increases]
- [Adam screams]
- [gasps]
[retching, coughing]
[coughing, spits]
[groans]
[Adam] I heard you.
You play beautifully.
But you weren't able to be there.
[groans]
Well, I mean
I just
I
I don't know what happened
[groans]
but it was beautiful.
I felt I felt like
I was on some sorta spaceship.
Or more like
like being trapped inside a whale's belly.
There was water everywhere.
I was surrounded by your music.
Beautiful.
[sighs]
Beautiful like you are.
- [retches]
- Adam!
[coughing]
What's going on?
Adam. Adam, listen to me, Adam.
They did something to me too.
The police came to me
because they believe that I set the fire.
[Piotr] Leave now, or I will instruct
one of the orderlies to remove you.
Of course. Uh, I think he's nauseous.
He's talking nonsense.
As you know, Adam keeps misusing his meds.
This is the result of mixing medication.
I'm taking him to have his stomach pumped.
Go now.
[mysterious music playing]
[indistinct chattering]
Iza. Iza.
- Look. Please, it's an emergency.
- [Paweł] Izabela!
Sorry! [chuckles]
You promised.
[Julia sighs]
Just make the face longer.
And give her higher cheekbones.
Julia, is what I'm making here
for the the police?
Bigger lips too.
[Iza] Come on. Tell me, please.
We're friends. You can trust me.
- Bigger. Bigger button nose.
- Tell me what's this for.
If you're not gonna tell me what it's for,
sorry, then I can't draw for you.
[Julia] Iza.
The police suspect that
someone burned down my home.
Oh fuck!
Do you think it might have something to do
with that redheaded girl?
Mm-hmm.
In my dreams, I can see her face.
I think their memories.
[Julia] I can't quite fit it all together
into one clear picture yet.
And Zofia keeps telling me
that this girl doesn't exist.
But I know that this will all make sense.
[Iza] Julia, what are you gonna do
with this picture?
Bring it to the police.
[Iza] Holy shit.
Iza, my God.
[chuckles]
Yes.
That's her.
[tense music playing]
[tense music fades]
[ominous music playing]
[ominous music fades]
[door opens, closes]
[Magda] Principessa. Who is that?
I don't know. I'm just trying to remember.
Look in the box for your truth.
I'll check the other side of the glass.
You'll see in the mirror.
Find the black box.
"Dark night, that from the eye
his function takes"
[redhead] "The ear more quick
of apprehension makes."
"Wherein it doth impair the seeing sense,
it pays"
"the hearing double recompense."
[tense music playing]
[water burbling]
[ominous music playing]
[ominous music continues]
[water burbling intensifies]
[water burbling stops]
[shuddered breathing]
[tense music playing]
- [distorted high-pitched sound]
- [door slams shut]
[indistinct chattering]
- [Julia] Do you know what's going on?
- [Paweł] Oh, it's the fucking system.
Probably a short circuit.
[Paweł] Oh, what a surprise.
Magda!
Magda, open the door!
- [Iza] Dr. Zofia, come quick!
- Magda!
- What's going on?
- Go to your rooms. Right now.
Go back to your room.
[door lock clicking]
- Go to your rooms!
- You guys see anything?
Did you hear her? To your rooms!
[tense music playing]
[tense music intensifies]
[water splashes]
[ominous music sting]
[mysterious music playing]
- Well
- What is she doing down here?
Who?
Aniela.
Julia, where is Aniela?
But she just came through here
[Iza] Aniela wasn't here, Julia.
Here you go.
You're shaking.
I talked with her right before.
[Iza] With Magda?
- I could have done something.
- Shh. They're bringing her.
She's alive?
[door closes]
Take care of this.
I'll check the boiler room.
Since when do you give orders here?
Starting now.
- Where are they gonna take her to?
- Give it a rest, okay?
It's just how it is in here.
[Julia] What the hell does that even mean?
She means
that patients don't always do well.
And the police, huh?
No police are investigating or anything?
And what if she was murdered? What, then?
[chuckles] Here we go.
Well, no, but she was in that room.
Aniela was in there too!
The doors to her room were locked.
- And nobody else was there.
- And nobody saw it happen.
I saw it! Okay?
The door to her room was locked.
- It's impossible that anyone just
- [Julia] I saw it! I'm sure!
- Maybe she was murdered by that psycho.
- And maybe you did it.
- You showed up before all of us.
- Enough. Could you please just stop?
Sorry, but her rambling on and suspicions
are nonsensical and getting old.
Hey, Julia is stressed out.
I'll admit. This is stressing me out.
- [low buzzing]
- Aha.
[Paweł] It's a serious malfunction.
All right.
Now, now. It's gettin' weird.
- [Paweł] I'm off.
- [door opens, closes]
[Julia sighs]
I might as well.
[door slams shut]
["Clair de Lune" by Debussy playing]
[door opens]
[door slams shut]
[indistinct chattering]
[squawking]
- [Zofia shooing]
- [squawks]
[moans] Since when
do you make in-room visits?
We were supposed to have
our therapy session at 11:00,
and I wanted to check in
to see if everything was all right.
Especially after what happened yesterday.
And what time is it?
About noon, more or less.
The system got flooded.
By tomorrow,
we should be repaired and back up.
[distant clatter]
Where did you get her?
I got this doll from Magda.
She gave it to you, or you robbed her?
You mean you think I'm a thief?
Well, are you?
Yes.
I stole her doll.
And just before, I drowned Magda.
That wasn't your fault.
Where'd you put her now?
Hm?
Her body, where is it?
The hospital
so cause of death can be determined.
She probably experienced a stroke,
but it's also likely that she fainted.
She had been taking
hypertension medication for many years.
- Aniela was in Magda's room though.
- What are you suggesting?
That a seven-year-old girl
could have murdered a grown woman?
I saw her though.
You look nice as a redhead.
That's not me.
No?
No, that's a composite sketch
of that redheaded girl.
For the police.
And it looks exactly like you.
The same eyebrows, eyes, nose, even lips.
That's you.
You want me to give it to the police?
- No.
- [tense music sting]
Get something to eat at the cafeteria
because everything has gone haywire,
and the kitchen's only serving cold food.
[door opens]
[door closes]
[tense music playing]
- [music intensifies]
- [knocking at door]
Who is it?
[knocking at door]
What?
Hey!
[electronic dance music playing]
Just wait!
["Nightmare Turned to Life" playing]
[spoon clanking]
[music continues]
[music stops]
- [Julia] Iza!
- Hm?
- Have you seen Aniela anywhere?
- Aniela?
- You know, that little brat, Aniela.
- Come on. I know who Aniela is.
[Julia] Hey, why does she have
Magda's doll in your picture?
[tuts] Well, it used to be Aniela's,
but now it doesn't matter.
["Nightmare Turned to Life"
resumes playing]
[Julia] Hey!
[music stops]
That's your doll, isn't it?
You should have just asked for it.
[sighs] Aniela.
Look at me.
Why were you with Magda?
[Julia] I know that you were there.
I saw you.
So tell me the truth.
Please just stop?
What are these numbers?
[mysterious music playing]
Hey, Aniela!
- [shouts]
- [loud thump]
[ominous music playing]
[shuddered breathing]
[coughs]
[ominous music continues]
Aniela?
Aniela?
[whimpers]
[ominous music intensifies]
I know she has numbers.
You were supposed to show me
what they're for.
[Piotr] If we don't do this,
the damage might be irreversible.
[Zofia] You know that resetting the system
isn't safe. Not for anyone.
[Piotr] I have no other option.
Piotr, we cannot take a risk like that.
Don't pretend to worry about risks now.
It was risky to bring
Tanatowski's daughter here too.
Once we're on the other side of this,
we should get rid of her for good.
No, we agreed.
That wasn't part of the deal.
Your plan failed. Deal's over.
[Piotr] And since Adam escaped before,
the deal is void now.
Besides, now you work for us.
[Julia] The black box.
- [humming]
- [squawks]
[rising humming]
[humming stops]
[melancholy music playing]
[man] Well, Szymon?
The performance was a failure,
but you'll still get to leave the clinic.
Are you happy?
[man] Dr. Zofia moved heaven and earth
to get you a spot on the team.
I'm very grateful to her for it.
You should be.
Please, can I just go
to the toilet quickly?
[man] You couldn't use the one
in your room?
We should let him go.
Go.
Don't take too long.
[ethereal music playing]
Get out of here, you hear?
[Julia sobs]
They'll kill you.
[Julia crying]
Tell me what happened.
I made it.
Please just get out.
[whimpers]
[crying]
[sobs]
[crying]
[ethereal music playing]
[suspenseful music playing]
[suspenseful music continues]
[Julia] Hey, Paweł,
have you seen Adam anywhere?
In a minute.
[tense music playing]
[indistinct chattering]
[Julia] You feeling better?
Well, you could say that.
Have you heard about Magda's accident?
She died last night.
How?
Apparently, it was a stroke.
Adam
Szymon was just taken away,
and he's in terrible condition.
If he doesn't have a talent,
then what will happen to him, huh?
We must end this thing before they do.
They already keep you sedated
for some reason.
Yeah.
Quite effectively.
I'm sure that this clinic is just a cover.
- Nothing makes sense here.
- You're telling me.
Listen, before she died, Magda insisted.
She said we must look for the black box.
Apparently, the answers are all there.
- What, like a secret message?
- No, not really.
Downstairs, in the basement,
the box is hidden down there,
according to Magda.
That is the central computer
that keeps everything running here.
It might have the truth to who we are
and what this all means, Adam,
and the truth of what our story is.
I'm going to find out where I'm from
and who my parents were
before they were murdered.
Murdered?
Police suspect that it was me.
That's absurd.
You know,
I keep seeing
the same redheaded girl in my dreams,
but
what if it actually was me?
[children laughing]
[children chattering]
Let's go.
[electronic dance music playing]
- Paweł.
- [music stops]
Hey.
So you wanna see the mainframe or what?
Whose is it?
Just come on.
[electronic dance music resumes]
[Paweł] Hang on!
What mainframe are we talking about?
[electronic dance music continues]
[Julia] Come on!
- [Adam] Paweł?
- Hey, watch what you're doing.
That wasn't here this morning.
[Julia] Right.
- Are you sure about that?
- [Julia] Yes.
Well, fuck. Game over.
Maybe you should just ask the doll.
She says piss off.
[suspenseful music playing]
Here it is.
[Adam] Fuck.
[Adam] What is this?
You were right about the morgue.
[Julia] Except they aren't dead at all.
[Adam] They're still breathing.
[foil rustling]
[Paweł] What the fuck
do they need bodies for?
[Julia] Paweł. Paweł, come here.
BOILER ROOM
[rumbling]
Oh fuck. Open it.
Then some light here, please.
You wanna show us she has a willy?
Don't get turned on, perv.
Just hold the light steady.
[Adam] All right. Hurry up.
[keypad beeping]
[door lock clicking]
[reverential music playing]
[Paweł] Oh fuck.
Jesus! Shit, fuck me!
God, she's beautiful. Like Star Trek.
[Julia] Told you.
See? We found your whale.
[Adam] Let's find out who we really are.
All right. Where's the screen at?
What? You thought it would have
a CRT monitor, mouse, keyboard?
- Then how can we get the answers from it?
- Hang on.
We have a screen right here.
[Julia] Don't you feel
it's unnaturally cold in here?
They are cooling it
probably because it overheated yesterday.
Today Piotr was saying
that they were going to reset the system.
That'd be great, as long as they didn't
update the security on this yet.
[low whooshing]
[beeping]
[Paweł] All right, I'm in.
Hey. Hey! What made it do that?
[pulsing sound]
- [Adam] It's pulsating.
- It's just updating.
- [Paweł] Your pacing isn't gonna help us.
- That's an alarm. You put on the alarm!
[Paweł] It's not! That's how it works!
Shut the fuck up!
[clamoring]
[electronic dance music playing]
All right. We're good.
SECOND CHANCE
Oh fuck. Shit. What? Uh Oh
Abramowicz, Adamska.
Wait. Hey, search "Julia."
[Paweł] Julia.
NO RESULTS
Nothing.
Nothing. There's nothing!
Uh
- It's shaking. It's gonna break.
- [Julia] Type your name.
- My name. My name. Paweł.
- Search for you and Adam, okay?
[Paweł] Paweł.
Nothing. Adam.
[Paweł] Fuck, that's not you.
Who the hell is that?
[door slams]
[suspenseful music playing]
Type in "Karolina."
[Julia] Karolina Winiarek.
Whoa! Julia, it's you.
BORN FEBRUARY 6, 2004
[door slams open]
[tense music playing]
I know I'm not Julia. I'm Karolina!
Karolina?
Maybe Karolina.
[tense music grows to crescendo]
[ethereal music playing]
[music fades]
