Shot in the Dark (2017) s01e04 Episode Script

Nice Package

1 Wow, that is fucking destroyed.
Shit.
This is gonna shut down the freeway for a while.
They just pulled a body out.
Yeah, this is a crime scene now.
That is ridiculous.
Wrong-way driver.
I don't know how these guys do this job.
No idea.
Wow.
All right, that's done.
We gotta edit this now.
This is the Story of the Night.
That's the money shot right there.
Good morning.
It's Howard with RMG.
I'm sending you footage of this fatal.
At least one dead in this 405 crash.
There is one body still on the scene and they were doing CPR on a second person.
Okay, thanks.
Bye.
It's a great story.
And the best thing for me is I didn't see any other stringers here.
Fuck, I'm out of shape.
I learned a long time ago, stringing, it's best to have high ground.
See Howard over there? And then it looks like, uh I'm getting the same thing he is, but better.
And he doesn't know I'm here.
I might not have been the closest one or the first one, but I worked harder.
I worked for my shots.
All right.
Let's get out of here.
For the networks, this is a hell of a deal.
Hey, it's Scott with LLN.
I sent you the 405 fatal.
Possibly a double fatal.
That is packaged with the other stuff I sent in.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
Bye.
Sounds like that might be the Story of the Night.
But there's no reason to send that out by itself.
If I do a package, I make more money.
Howard probably doesn't even know that I was there.
So, I have the upper hand on that.
I think he's gonna be surprised.
This happened on the northbound 405 just before 3 this morning on Getty Center Drive.
CHP tells us two people are dead.
One other has been taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The crash caused quite the backup, as you see.
Traffic at a standstill on the freeway early this morning.
Investigators are now looking into what led up to this crash.
Fucking hell.
Guys, we'll try and knock this out quick.
I know you wanna get some hits.
Zack, give us an update.
You've been killing it the last two weeks.
Cool.
Um OnScene TV, it's a business.
We take a lot of time to go through and make sure our journalists are perfectly prepared for what they're gonna experience and deal with.
I just wanted to introduce Austi real quick.
She's just starting.
She'll be riding with us tonight.
- Hi.
- Say hi to Austi.
- Hey, Austi.
- Hi With OnScene it's not, "Here's your camera, go.
" We work hard.
We work real hard, we try our best, and we help new people achieve goals.
And that's part of what the company does.
We're number one.
Maintaining that is the hard part.
Just a couple things on safety and then we're gonna wrap it up.
Please update your statuses 'cause if you disappear, like, if something happens, God forbid We've had people disappear Thank God they've just fallen asleep.
Thank you for your time.
Get back out in the field.
Clair's gonna be on the radio, doing control.
Just put yourself 10-8 drive time to your first ins.
If you're off, have a good night.
I had a great story.
Really good shots.
I thought I had it in the bag.
I mean, turn the news on, all I see is LoudLabs, LoudLabs, LoudLabs.
That's just money floating away to me.
Without RMG on the screen I don't pay my mortgage.
He's a sneaky bastard.
I didn't even see him there.
All of a sudden, he Yep.
There's a pursuit on the northbound 5 somewhere.
Shit.
I'm on the 5.
There's a pursuit coming right at us now, somewhere.
And I don't know exactly where it is.
It's just gone past.
Fuck! Goddamn it.
I fucking hate this.
Just fucking missed it.
It went right past us.
We're behind it.
We never wanna be behind a pursuit.
You always wanna be in front of it.
With a pursuit, you've gotta get the passing shot.
Goddamn it.
Fuck! There they are.
There, there.
Now, I'm gonna try and catch them.
Fuck it.
On the 5, north.
Coming up to Main Street, Broadway, 110 North interchange.
Five When they go west, you try and parallel them.
They come south, you cut them off.
It's kind of a real good game of cat and mouse.
Come on.
Come on! If he gets off, we're gonna be close to him.
There's one unit there.
He took that off ramp and went straight into downtown.
I won't catch him there.
I have to get in front.
He's close by.
I can hear the choppers.
Here it is, coming right at us.
You fucking got it! You fucking! Now I'm fucking happy.
I swear, this is why I do this job.
Gotta get the end of it.
Control, how do you copy? Roger.
I'm in the area doing a ride-along.
Check it out, Ambulance 211, with not a lot of information on it.
Possible shots fired Let's go check it out.
Sounds like an armed robbery suspect, got a perimeter set up.
Suspect, male Hispanic, 15 to 18 years, wearing a red sweatshirt.
Last seen running through the houses.
So, if there was a shooting, possible man down - What should your response be? - Yeah.
- Trust your instincts.
- Okay.
Anytime I've second-guessed it, like, "No, I'm not gonna check it out," it ended up being something.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
You can't predict the future.
Base it on your experience.
- Okay.
- Either you'll get it or you won't.
- Can you see it? - Yes.
The airship.
The airship's looking for these guys.
All right.
You ready? Steve's here, too.
- Good to see you.
- Good to see you.
- We don't know what they're looking for.
- Armed robbery suspect.
Suspects have handguns.
They think they know who the guys are.
They're serious 211 suspects.
They assaulted the lady at the taco stand.
Property was taken, probably not tacos.
They took U.
S.
currency.
We don't know the amount.
I just wanna show Austi something real quick.
- You see that angle right there? - Yeah.
On an incident where you've got an innocent victim who's been assaulted, - you don't show their face.
- Okay.
Shot here, looking right here, that's perfect.
And right there, see that? Taking her pulse.
The look of concern on his face for her safety, that tells the story and then that's also protecting her identity.
Is that par for all victims? - No.
No.
- Okay.
We have opportunity.
When given the option - Take it.
- Geographically, take it.
I do kind of feel like an invader.
That I'm invading people's privacy and space.
And I don't like that.
- Got this handled? - Yeah.
I'm gonna go back 10-8.
But I guess it'll be about finding a balance.
I think it'll be comfortable once I'm comfortable with myself.
Come on.
Move! He rammed into a dead end.
They'll be Code 6.
They'll be stopped with the vehicle.
- Shit.
- We got a runner running towards Sunset.
We need this guy, even if he's in handcuffs.
He's out of the car running now.
LAPD has two in custody and I don't have anything further.
Sir, get away from here, go back! Behind this red line.
Go back, go back, go back! Good thing is, I don't see Zak or Scott.
Doesn't mean they're not here, 'cause they're sneaky.
Just need a shot of his face.
Middle of Hollywood.
Imagine being a tourist.
You'd think this is part of a movie set.
I want a shot of the car.
Got a shot of his face.
Got him in handcuffs.
I got the passing shots.
I'll take this any day.
I did get pretty lucky.
Hopefully my luck will continue.
Hey, did you get all of it? Yeah, I got the end of it.
- You did? - Yeah.
Got him on the floor.
He's crying like a baby.
He's got dog bites on him.
But there's no one else on this.
Got a good passing shot in downtown.
He came screaming around the corner in front.
I didn't think I was gonna get it.
I didn't know where it was on the 5.
Yeah.
Right, yeah.
I might come and say hello.
Yeah.
We've had a lot of photographers apply with us and regardless of how qualified someone is, they could have a résumé this thick, traveled the world, saying that they've seen everything.
And they ride out with us one night, a half hour later, they're throwing up and they can't take it.
It's at the end of the day, up to you, if you're a person who can deal with it.
- That's really what it comes down to.
- I feel like I can handle it.
Think you could be a part of our team? - Heck, yeah.
- Okay.
- I'm excited.
I'm super-excited.
- Okay.
That's a good sign.
- Welcome to OnScene.
- Thank you! Ninety for right now, it's you and I.
David 17 should be out soon also.
Copy that.
Stringing is competitive.
It's to the point, if you're not on a team, you won't make it.
You can't be out there by yourself.
And you wanna always be in communication.
- Communication is key.
- Rollover.
Northbound 5 between Los Feliz and Colorado Boulevard.
David 17 en route to the location of the northbound 5 between Los Feliz and Colorado.
If you think this is worth your package, go for it.
If you have competition besides with OnScene, let me know.
So far, I don't think anyone has found it.
Good luck.
It just turned into a physical rescue.
- Do your thing.
Talk to you later.
- Copy.
That's Victor Park.
He's my newest stringer.
The passion he has for news and the hustle he has I hired him.
And so now we'll see what happens.
One thing I love about this job is working with LoudLabs.
There's this form of respect.
You don't often get that with other stringer companies.
I can't get that crash off my mind.
I just kind of, like, keep reliving that night.
The vision of the guy trapped in the car.
That's the first time in 15 years of doing this that you're You knew straight away that that affected you, straight away.
We've seen some shit in 15 years.
But We've seen everything.
But to actually be in that position where somebody's life is in your hands.
You know, I can't explain that feeling.
I mean I don't wanna see that kind of stuff anymore.
I mean, at the end of the day, you saved his life.
Yeah, I kept it together right up until the realization set in of what happened.
That car could've exploded.
I could've been hit by a car.
It really has affected me.
I honestly don't know if I can do it anymore.
4-51.
Yeah, roger that.
Control, I'm Code 6.
Show me on scene here.
Here's that rollover on the northbound 5.
I'll continue and check it out.
And, 471, if you could, stand by on this incident.
So, you've got RMG, which is Howard and Austin and Marc working hard.
And then we've got Scott and his team on a larger scale.
And then you've got OnScene, and we've got twice that of our closest competitor.
But you can always get more.
Cool.
And, oh, look, it's Victor.
- What are you doing? - Recording.
- You can't be in this area.
- I'll get out.
- I'll stay over here.
- You understand? Don't get in that area.
Don't get in the way.
I know what I need to do to make sure that my company is ultimately number one.
And that goal with doing that is to hire the most qualified people available.
- Hey.
- Hey.
No matter who it is.
All is fair in love and war.
And, uh, that's the game.
Austin and I have always been together.
We've never been lonely.
We've always had great friends in each other.
He's still my brother.
It's heartbreaking.
So, without Austin, it's gonna seriously hurt the business now.
There's been times where I thought I'm crazy doing this job.
But I try not to let it stress me out.
Rain in the City of Angels is very rare for us.
So the whole city's completely unable to deal with that.
People crash into each other, things flood.
We don't deal with rain very well.
If it snowed here, I think half the population would get killed overnight.
Weather.
The weather is special tonight.
Weather is on the menu.
Weather is a huge deal and stations want it covered.
But it's also Los Angeles, so, they make a bigger deal than it is.
When they over-exaggerate, it's not as big as they wanted, they need footage to show they weren't lying.
What weather means to me is free money.
This is why I left England.
Miserable weather.
Whoa! Hydroplaning is not a good thing.
Fucking That's gonna be lethal in an hour.
The main story tonight, it's gonna be anything related to the rain.
But without my twin brother Austin, I'm out here now by myself.
So, that makes it difficult to make money.
Tonight, I need a crash that's caused by the rain.
I need flooding.
I need power outages caused by the weather.
If you get a car hydroplaning, spinning around, you get that on tape? You've definitely won the night.
Definitely.
Three-car collision inside a Laundromat.
Holy shit.
Well, a three-car traffic With a vehicle inside of a Laundromat.
Intersection of Figueroa and 73rd.
Figueroa and 73rd.
Awesome.
It's about a mile and a half out.
We're two minutes away.
This could be incredibly interesting.
Basically, the more bizarre, the more substantial that story then becomes, and the more interesting that is for our client.
Alrighty.
Oh, shit.
For a vehicle into the side of a building, that's definitely quite a bit of damage.
Scary when you see a car going through a building.
Steve? - I was across - You're here.
I was right Parked right there.
I was gonna grab a pizza from Little Caesars real quick.
- You heard it? - And I heard, "Boom, boom!" I turn around and the car's in the Laundromat.
- And I'm like, "Shit!" - No shit.
- Anybody being transported or no? - Doesn't look like it.
I'm gonna look at the front over here.
- It's visual.
Looks good.
- Yeah, looks good.
With that visual, that pushes it over the edge and makes it interesting.
This is gonna sell, no problem.
See yellow? It's breaking up.
We don't want green.
We want yellow.
So Overturned car off the 110 freeway.
You gotta be fucking kidding me.
All right, here we go.
It's practically right down the street.
Vehicle off the freeway, TC'd into a building.
As the weather calls go, this is a good one.
Let's make money off of that.
It's gonna be behind here.
It's gonna be on our right side after this turn.
There's no cops here yet or anything.
Fuck.
Fuck, dude.
I don't know the best way to get in there.
Jesus.
Hey! Is everybody out? Everybody okay? Is there still anybody in there? People think I'm a loose cannon.
Some people think I'm unpredictable.
But I'm a stringer.
And, uh, stringing is only a dangerous job if you're an idiot.
- Are you okay? - We call your name, Lord Jesus! What happened? It's like something took me off the freeway.
And it's like somebody was pushing me.
That's all I can remember, sir.
- Are you okay? - I just hurt my chest.
But I thank God.
He saved me to be out of this.
He really saved my life and He saved my life.
Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! That's all I can say.
Thank you, Jesus.
Hallelujah! He saved me! No one else is in the car, ma'am? This story's awesome because she's still alive.
It's a happy story.
We don't get to do happy stories that often.
Sometimes everybody wins.
In downtown LA, just one of many drivers struggling on the rainy roads.
Her car apparently flew off the 110 freeway near the 101 south into a ditch next to an apartment complex there.
You see that vehicle there.
She wasn't seriously hurt.
Good.
Like I said, when it rains in LA, everybody completely loses it.
And we have to talk about the rain, the wet road conditions.
It's our ability to tell the story about the rain, how it affected the city, and that tells you what's going on tonight.
Flooding between Los Angeles and San Pedro.
There we go.
Major flooding between Los Angeles and San Pedro streets.
This will be pretty visual.
And visual sells.
They did a MythBusters on this.
Better to drive fast to keep the water off or drive slow? They did it for walking.
I don't know what it is for cars.
Uh, if it's flooding, it should be here somewhere.
Trying to cover the whole city, by myself.
I have to run everything down now.
Come on.
Not the most adrenaline-filled stories, but I just need someone to plow through it.
Oh, look who's here.
Howard's here.
Oh, he got a cop going through it.
That's awesome.
Nice, he did that on purpose.
There's Zak.
He's just smiling.
Too late, buddy.
It's down to who can get the best shot.
We'll go right where Howard is and see what he does.
All right.
Hey, you're on the red.
Near a fire hydrant.
I don't get yelled at, Howard.
You get yelled at for that.
Fucking Zak.
You found the perfect spot.
With the little overhang and everything.
- No, this is actually my spot.
- Your spot? - Wanna try? - No, your white balance is off.
Oh, no.
It's blue? No, perfect.
What are you talking about? All right, I'm done.
I'll hang out for a bit, 'cause I gotta catch up to whatever you shot.
Be here for a while.
The curious question is where's Scott? All right, be careful, Howard.
- See you later.
- See you, brother.
Oh, man.
So, we need to get that shot.
I was hoping that would be exclusive, but nope.
Trusty old Zak shows up again.
That's kind of annoying.
I have had water damage on every single camera I've owned.
Except for this one.
That was not cheap.
What was that? What the fuck happened here? What happened? Holy shit! A TC occurred while we were cleaning off the camera and it looks like a crash into a fire hydrant.
A high-powered fire hydrant.
That's 100 feet high Uh, I haven't seen the driver get out of that car.
But we are set up for the shot.
As visuals go, it's great.
A lot of water.
Let's get down there.
Yeah, nobody in here.
It's empty.
Yeah, nobody in there.
Hey, is he the driver of this vehicle? Did you see him? Did you see him leave? We just missed it happening on camera.
Good news is, no competition.
All right.
Let's go dry off.
- Hello.
- Hey, um, I'm at a TC at Expo on the 110.
I actually witnessed it.
I have two good stories so far.
You? I do have a vehicle that rolled off the freeway from the rain.
Sweet.
All right.
Bye.
Victor's my boy! My boy, Blue! You're my boy, Blue! - Hi, Victor.
- Hi, I just sent you footage of a vehicle that rolled off the freeway.
Then we're gonna package that with footage of rain.
- Okay.
Cool.
Thank you.
- All right.
- Bye-bye.
- Bye.
- Hello.
- Yeah, buenos dias.
Buenos dias.
This is Victor calling, LoudLabs.
Hi, Victor.
That's not good.
This morning, a sheared fire hydrant sends water shooting into the sky.
Two cars crash.
All the water flooded a nearby USC parking garage.
So, can you imagine you get that, plus the rain.
That's a significant fire hydrant break.
- Hello? - Victor, hey, man.
It's Zak.
- What's up? - Hey, are you working tonight? Uh, yes.
Why? If you've got time, I'd love to meet and chat.
You're wet.
- I am.
- Completely drenched.
Come on, let's talk over here.
- Good to see you.
- How was your night? Uh, a little exhausting.
Not too crazy.
How about you? - You've been out in the rain.
- Busy.
Awesome.
So, the reason I called, I don't wanna waste time.
Every time I've seen you at an incident, you just reek of OnScene professionalism.
I don't see you working with LoudLabs.
I see you working with us.
