THE GLASS DOME
[music fades out]
[dog barking]
-[woman] They look so sad in the drawing.
-[Isla] Mm.
-Here.
-Thank you.
Who are they?
It's Mummy, Daddy and me.
[woman] Oh. You look nice.
This one here?
I didn't draw that one.
Okay.
Who drew it?
Ecki.
[tense music playing]
Why did Ecki draw that?
Did he say?
No.
Which colour will you choose?
Ah, pink, is it? That's my favourite.
And mine.
And Grandma's.
But not Daddy's.
-My daddy's is blue.
-Ah.
What do you think is Ecki's favourite?
I know that. It's red.
How do you know that?
Because he painted his arm with it.
Here. In red.
Some flower.
[tense music rises]
[music fades]
-Could you have a look at something?
-Mm-hmm.
[Lejla] So many girls
have gone missing over the years.
Why did you tie these ones here to Ecki?
-They were never found.
-[Valter] No.
But at that point in time,
you were very convinced
that there were
at least three others before you,
based upon those drawings you found.
And these matched,
in terms of age and appearance.
They had the same build too.
Same long, brown hair.
And you all disappeared
in the exact same way.
Near your homes, zero forensic evidence.
It was like you'd vanished into thin air.
We weren't randomly chosen, then.
He was watching us.
He would have seen our routines
and how our lives worked.
Let's play around with the idea
that Ecki has got Alicia.
So, you think that for 20-odd years,
he took a break?
That's entirely possible.
It's like any addiction.
There are periods of active abuse
and periods when they're clean.
But the addiction is chronic.
And what's different here is
that he has altered his M.O.
-[Valter] Mm-hmm.
-It's like he wants to show off this time.
Something must've happened in his life
recently that has thrown him off balance.
Something that has offended him.
Something like what, though?
I don't know.
I just know if I didn't follow
what he told me, or if…
he was ignored in any sort of way…
he really hated that.
He took it as a personal insult.
What made you aware of that?
He went totally crazy.
He'd thump the glass, and I'd scream back.
It became like
a power struggle between us.
Sometimes I would use that
to psych him out a bit.
But I knew when I had to give in,
and I never crossed that line.
And so he had to feel in charge,
so I backed down for him to feel that.
I had to…
really… show that I was sorry.
Boost up his ego.
[sombre music playing]
Why have you never said
any of this before?
Can I borrow your car?
[music fades out]
I've taken back my rental.
You can use Ann-Marie's.
Consider it yours.
[mellow country pop music playing]
WELCOME TO GRANÅS
[music continues on radio]
I got a thick skin ♪
[radio switches]
[reporter] This morning,
the police released information
that there may be a connection
between the recently reported sabotage
against Svea Vanadin's mine
and the abduction of Alicia Kamran.
Ten-year-old Alicia disappeared
from her home on March 5th.
-The police are investigating…
-[man] Let's have another.
…as a possible kidnapping.
[indistinct chatter]
[horn tooting]
Hi, Tomas.
How's it going?
[sighs] Well, Valter has locked
every window in the house,
so I'm living the… high life.
-Sounds like him.
-Yeah.
I'm short on time.
-So what did you want to talk about?
-Right.
[Lejla exhales]
I, uh…
I've made a profile on Ecki.
[sighs]
Okay.
How sophisticated.
Hmm.
"Deficits in attachment
and social interaction."
"Exposed to totalitarian power
with… sadistic elements of violence."
"Clear preference in choice of victim."
"Specific fixation/fetish,
possibly related to early trauma,
experiences, or fantasies."
Mm. That's all based on myself
and the other girls that Valter linked
to the investigation.
Hmm.
-Have you gone through Valter's material?
-[scoffs]
[chuckles softly] No.
Must be over ten years now
since anyone looked at that.
You should really look.
Alicia matches the profile.
"Fixation/fetish"?
Girls with long, brown hair.
I'm sure the hair's important.
It was almost like this ritual for him
when he cut off mine.
Why would that be?
Someone might have had
a big impact on him.
Someone he sees as beyond reach.
And he wants power to dominate her,
maybe punish her.
Is it sexually motivated?
No, it's all about power.
He enjoys having that.
And he enjoys running
this investigation, I think.
[laughs]
Uh…
-What do you mean by that?
-The clothes.
The sabotage at the mine.
The video. The fact he was in my room.
All of that is communication
from his side.
I think it's aimed at you.
To hamper the investigation.
-Some kind of power trip, then?
-Yeah.
-More coffee?
-Oh, yeah. Thanks.
-There you go.
-It was very nice.
[woman] Thank you.
Right, so you're thinking
that this here… Ecki,
is guilty of murdering Louise
and abducting Alicia?
And what do you have?
That all this shit going on in Granås is
no more than some coincidence?
Isla gave us a description.
A tattoo.
A red flower painted on his arm.
Did you ever see that?
[woman] Do you recognise this?
I think that's a bit small.
[woman] Hmm.
And this one here?
-[mobile phone ringing]
-No, I think it was more red.
Uh, was it… a flower you've seen before?
[Isla] I didn't recognise it.
[office telephone ringing]
[Aino] I'll be back soon.
[kisses]
If you like, you can draw some more.
How's it going?
[inhales deeply] It's just a nightmare.
-[woman] Aino.
-Huh?
Shall I can come out to you
so we can have a chat?
-[Aino] Okay.
-See you soon.
-Hi, Isla.
-[Isla] Hi.
That's a nice drawing. It's really good.
-But it's horrible.
-What? Why's that?
I'm trying to draw like him,
but my one's stupid. [huffs]
No, that isn't stupid. Let me see.
It's really nice.
But you have to practise too.
Like you're doing.
When you practise,
you get better and better.
[gentle music playing lightly]
[Aino] Here you go.
Thanks.
[footsteps recede]
[man] John Wayne Gacy had at least
two victims that he never confessed to.
Yeah.
He didn't want to be associated with them.
And the same goes for Gary Ridgway,
and Bundy, and Samuel Little.
Yeah, exactly. Because the more skilled
they got, the more ashamed they felt
of their initial attempts, right?
They didn't want to admit
that they had acted clumsily
with their very first victims.
They didn't want to acknowledge them
in the body count.
Makes sense.
Looking forward to seeing you
as soon as possible.
-You too.
-Take care.
You too, Raúl. Bye.
-[vacuum buzzes]
-[Lejla] Valter?
Got a second to talk about the case?
[vacuum cuts off]
[Valter] Yes, what is it?
I think there's at least
one other victim missing there.
Nah, I wouldn't have missed that.
That's because
you were just looking at that.
But that… is perfection.
Ah.
No one is perfect on the first try.
So, if there's a mistake on there,
we have to find it.
[sighs]
Their first victim always says
the most about their character.
-What do you mean?
-We have to go much further back.
We need all investigations
on murdered and missing girls
in the whole of Scandinavia
in between 1980 and '95.
-Can you find that out?
-Uh, yeah.
Good. Great, great, great.
[light music playing]
[Tomas] We've found a link between
the attack on the mine
and Alicia's disappearance.
We have a description.
And we have traces in Lejla's room
that have been sent for analysis.
If he's been convicted
or prosecuted before, we'll get a match.
What if there's none?
This is positive, Said.
You said that about the video too.
Hasn't got us anywhere.
What about the guy
Louise had something with?
Uh, I mean,
we have been making enquiries on that.
But Louise's mobile is missing and we,
uh, can't find anything in the call logs.
Where is her phone?
Uh…
[sombre music plays softly]
I don't know that.
Last time it was on was at your house.
If I hadn't gone to Stockholm,
this wouldn't have happened.
It's all my fault.
You shouldn't think like that.
[music fades out]
Listen, Louise's mobile phone logs,
I want to go through them one more time.
-Why?
-In case you missed something.
What sort of thing?
Something to help us find out who she was
having a bit on the side with, perhaps.
There can't be nothing.
Can there?
It'd be of interest to know who he is
for the sake of the investigation.
Of course it's of interest,
but we do have other leads, don't we?
I just think it's weird
he hasn't come forward.
It's just that… it makes you think
he's hiding something.
[clinking]
[keyboard clacking]
[crackling in the distance]
[crackling]
[tense music playing]
[switch clicking]
[tense music continues]
[crackling continues]
[crackling]
[exhales]
[echoing] Here's my baby girl.
It's cold. You should come inside.
[breath echoing softly]
[music fades]
[TV plays faintly]
[sighs]

PICTURE 3
GIRL'S FACE UNCOVERED.
Valter.
Valter?
Take a look at this.
Long, dark hair.
Disappeared without a trace.
[Valter] Yes, same age.
Inas Jović.
[Valter] Hmm.
[music fades]
[Tomas] The M.O. is completely different.
[Lejla] Mm. That's the point.
It didn't turn out the way he wanted.
-What do you mean? He managed to kill her.
-Yeah, but he didn't enjoy doing it.
-[Tomas sighs]
-She got too real for him.
Too human.
He needed to cover her face
with a plastic bag.
-Mm-hmm.
-That's why he cut my hair.
That's why he had us trapped
like insects in a glass box.
[sighs] Okay.
He dehumanised us
so he could handle killing us.
-Yes. Yes, I… I see. I'll check it out.
-Thanks. [exhales]
-Bye, then.
-Okay. I'll email you my summary.
Yeah, do that. Bye.
[sent tone whooshes]
Oh my God. Lejla, Lejla.
I'll eat on the way.
I'm taking Aino food shopping.
[Valter] Okay.
Hey, that was great work.
Thanks.
Call me later
to let me know where you are.
[rock music playing from car]
[Jim] Girl in the box!
Huh… How you been doing?
-Good. And you?
-Fine.
Adde's not doing so fucking well, is he?
He's in custody.
While murderers and paedophiles run free.
Does that make you happy?
Fucking snitch!
-Are you done?
-[Martin] Hey, hey.
Uh, everything okay here?
[Jim laughs] Fuck yeah. Of course.
Hey. Jim.
Martin.
[sighs] And what's Martin up to in Granås?
Uh, helping with the search.
Don't fucking tell me that. Really?
That's amazing!
Doing a great job, you are.
Just imagine, they're coming
from all over the land just to help us.
-I have to say a big thanks.
-Well, you have to make an effort.
What more could you possibly want? Right?
[Martin] Mm.
See ya.
[Lejla] Mm.
-Who was that?
-That's Jim.
We were at school at the same time.
-Just ignore him.
-Ah.
How are things going?
I heard you started the search again.
Uh, no news yet,
but I guess we're back out there, finally.
-Yeah, yeah.
-Yes.
Yeah. I'm in charge of the coffee run,
as you can see.
[both chuckle]
How are you?
Uh, I really have no idea.
-I haven't got that far.
-I see.
If you like…
I mean, uh, if you want to talk at all,
we could go and have a coffee?
Uh, I don't like coffee.
-Do you like beer?
-[chuckles]
We could go to that bar
that's always full.
[both chuckle]
I don't drink alcohol either.
-Oh… Uh…
-[Lejla laughs]
I can have a glass of water
or something if that's all right.
-It's on me.
-[chuckles]
-Tonight at 7:00?
-Okay.
-I might have a beer if that's, uh… okay.
-Of course. That's fine.
-Great. Perfect, then. Uh, bye.
-Bye.
[light ambient music plays]
[dogs barking]
[Isla giggles]
He went like this.
And he looked me straight in the eyes.
Can you believe it?
[Aino] I mean, he should be locked up
before he hurts anyone.
Please, Isla, stop jumping on the sofa.
Didn't he used to be normal?
I think he went out with Louise.
-Nah, those two were never an item.
-You went out with Adde.
[laughs] In year nine!
He was crazy about you.
He told me. They all were.
They all thought you were fascinating.
You were so special.
[Lejla] Mm-hmm.
I don't remember it that way.
[glass smashing]
-[tense music plays]
-[Aino] Isla?
Are you hurt?
What have you done? What is it?
I opened the window so that Ecki
could come in and draw with me.
Who would draw with you? Ecki?
You can't open the window!
-Isla, look at me. Was he here?
-[Isla] Let me go!
[Aino] No, look at me!
Did you see him? No… Look at me!
Why did you open the window?
[tense music subsides]
-[officer] Anything out of the ordinary?
-Haven't seen anything.
-[officer] Nothing at all?
-[woman] Nothing.
-[officer] Did you see anything?
-[man] No.
Well, she doesn't seem to know
if he was actually there.
[sighs] That kid has
a vivid imagination. [chuckles]
Well, we should step up
our presence around here.
Can you go back in and talk to Aino?
She seemed shaken up.
All right.
-[Tomas clears throat]
-Look, I don't think he's after Isla.
-[Tomas] Isn't he?
-She doesn't match the profile.
And he won't take anyone else
as long as he has Alicia.
We don't even know if Alicia is alive.
She's alive.
Oh, great!
We can just sit back and relax, then.
[Lejla exhales deeply]
Did you look up the girl in the container?
Inas Jović. She matches the profile.
Came to Sweden in '92.
She vanished from a refugee centre
near Sundsvall six months later.
I've spoken to every fucking person
who worked there and who lived there.
We tracked down her parents,
and nothing new has come up
that we didn't know already.
Well, I can keep searching for her!
-[Tomas sighs]
-Will you… give me access to the archives?
That way, I can help!
[tense music playing]
[faint banging]
[young Lejla echoes] Hello!
Let me out of here!
Hello!
[siren blaring]
[dark music playing]
[siren continues]
[dark music intensifies]
[police dogs barking]
[breathing heavily]
What the fuck is this?
We need to get in there.
-[Jorun] But it's cordoned off.
-Can we sneak through?
I started counting them,
and she wasn't there.
[Tomas] Has she gone missing before?
Do you know what's happening?
A little girl…
from my granddaughter's class,
she was here for a swimming lesson.
Now she's missing.
-She's normally never on her own.
-[man] Elma!
You'll have to wait there.
-Is it Elma who's missing?
-[Björn] Unfortunately, we think it is.
[man] Is it him?
Is he the one who's taken her?
[heartbeat pulses]
[panting]
[mobile phone rings]
[music fades]
8 MISSED CALLS
WATER WITH MARTIN
-Hi, Björn.
-[Björn] Hi.
Has Lejla been here?
No, she hasn't been here.
I saw her at the crime scene,
but that was a while ago.
Where's Tomas? Is he here?
No, he's in a meeting with forensics.
Oh God. Fuck. Another girl's gone.
Yes, I know that.
You'll have to wait here, okay?
-Mm.
-Have a seat there.
-Do you want some coffee?
-I'd love some.
-Hi, Antonsson.
-Oh, hi there. Hiya.
Well… [sighs]
-Hello, Peter.
-Hi, Valter.
Hey, can I have a look at that?
-[Peter] Sure. There you go.
-Thanks.
[office phone rings]
[liquid pouring]
HAVE YOU SEEN ELMA?
[ringing continues]
[exhales]
[automated voice]
You have seven new messages.
Seven missed calls.
-Received today at 15:04.
-Oh.
[man] This is Jakobs-Jan. Is it okay
for our livestock to drink the water?
For fuck's sake! Can someone call me back?
[beeps]
[automated voice] Received today at 16:05.
-[beeps]
-Received today at 16:30.
[disguised voice] She's with Ecki.
Elma, say something.
[Elma] Mummy, Daddy, help me.
I want to go home.
[water gushing]
-[cuts off]
-[beeps]
[beeping]
[Elma] Mummy, Daddy, help me.
I want to go home.
Wait, hold on. What is that noise?
There, in the background?
Is it the mine? Or a wind turbine?
[Elma] Mummy, Daddy, help me. I want to…
-[Valter] Sounds like water, right?
-[beeps]
Yeah, uh, can you rewind it back for me?
[beeping]
[water gushing]
-[Elma] Mummy, Daddy, help me…
-A dam.
-Yeah. Huh.
-It's a dam.
[beeping]
-[water gushing]
-[Elma] Mummy, Da…
What time did the girl go missing?
[Björn] At 4:00 pm.
Okay.
[inhales]
Check out all the water treatment plants
in a radius of 30 miles.
-Okay.
-Yes?
-Get a move on.
-[Jorun] I'm calling Tomas.
-Are you with me, Antonsson?
-Yeah.
Good.
[keyboard clacking]
-Peter? Come on.
-[Peter] Yeah.
[upbeat rock music playing]
I was convinced that he wouldn't abduct
any more girls while he had Alicia.
Now there's another victim.
Simply disappeared.
So, what happens now?
Does that mean she will never be found or…
Hi. How about another drink?
Uh, no, it's all right, thanks. Thank you.
-[waitress] Just give me a shout.
-Thanks.
-What?
-She was flirting.
I don't think so.
Didn't you see?
Well, she'd be disappointed
when she got to know me.
Why's that?
Because I'm a fucking weirdo
who travels around the country
looking for missing people.
And I'm almost 40 and still studying.
So, not much of a catch really.
Why are you doing that?
Well, I'm taking a remote study course
at Linnaeus University.
I mean, looking for missing people.
My, uh, sister disappeared
when I was a boy.
She was only seven.
I was ten and lived in a little village.
I walked her to
and from school every day and…
one day I, uh, ran into a few of my mates,
and they'd made a skateboard ramp,
and I wanted to tag along.
She knew the way home.
I was sure she could find her way back.
-But, uh…
-Mm.
But, uh…
That was the last time we saw her.
[Martin sighs]
So sorry to hear that.
Uh, um…
It's, um, it's more of a sense of guilt
that I've got that, uh…
t-triggered something in me.
I became sort of manic in the end.
I couldn't understand how
you could do that to another person.
How do you feel about that?
I'm not sure.
I guess I became resigned to the fact
that there's evil in this world
you can't be protected from.
This thing that I've been doing
makes me wonder
if I could help another person in some way
so that they could come back home,
so then it would fill a hole inside of me.
[door knocking]
Hi.
I think I've got something.
Look at this.
A car was caught by the dam's
surveillance cameras at 4:30 pm.
Which is the same time
we received that message.
Do we have a close up
of the registration number?
No, we don't. But…
That's a Peugeot 205.
And that one's a Roland-Garros edition.
It's really rare.
Yeah. I'm a bit of a car nerd.
I, uh, looked it up and there's only
one of them in the whole country.
And the owner registered is
Vanja Frick, 84 years old.
-Eighty-four, you say?
-[Björn] Mm-hmm.
Yes, she has dementia and moved
to a care home six months ago.
But she is registered
at an address in Mora.
She has a flat where
an Internet subscription has been active
for the last 14 days.
Here's the address.
Bergsätravägen 3A in Mora.
[tense music builds slowly]
Listen up! We have an address in Mora.
There's a high chance
that both girls are there.
We're leaving in five minutes.
You'll be briefed in the cars.
Jorun, you hold the fort here.
-Okay.
-[Tomas] Come on, then!
[distant soft rock music playing]
I had a nice time.
Yes, me too.
So, where's the cottage you're renting?
Um, it's right up there, near Åsarna.
-Uh…
-[Lejla] Ah.
A lovely old cottage
from the 18th century.
Uh, it's really beautiful, by the river.
Would you like to come and see it?
Or do you have to get home?
[tense music playing]
[music fades]
[Martin chuckles nervously]
Oh, oh…
There.
So you don't go and trip over.
[chuckles]
[Lejla] It's beautiful here.
[Martin] Yeah, isn't it?
-I could easily live here.
-Mm-hmm.
[Martin chuckles]
[cupboard opens]
[Martin] We have beans, we have tuna.
We have…
instant coffee if you want. [chuckles]
Oh, hang on. What about some hot soup?
Yeah, that'd be great.
Let's see what we've got.
Uh…
-[liquid pours]
-[Martin hums]
Oh, hang on.
You could have a little shot.
-[giggles]
-If you want.
Um…
Go on, then. Why not? Give me a shot.
-A small one.
-[Martin] Okay.
-You say "when".
-Just a bit. Less than that!
-[Martin] Oh, right.
-Less. Like that.
I'll have a little more, huh?
-So, cheers.
-Cheers.
-[chuckles softly]
-Very cosy.
-[Martin clears throat]
-[Lejla exhales]
[Martin] So, uh…
You know when you were trapped in there,
what did you do to pass the time?
I'm sorry. I'm sure you don't…
We should, uh…
Let's talk about something else.
-No. It's okay. That's okay.
-[Martin] I'm sorry.
-Are you sure?
-Mm.
Well, uh, he would give me
little tasks to do.
For example, he'd tell me
to read to him from a book.
Then he'd always give me something.
Chewing gum, sweets, crayons.
I suppose it was like some kind of trade.
[Martin] So, he would
give you, like, rewards?
[Lejla] Yes, I'd do something and…
But, uh, isn't that
what he's doing now, though?
Meaning?
I'm thinking about what you said before,
about the clothes, the video,
the drawing as well.
It's all… well, directed at you.
[Lejla] Mm.
Like there's something
that he wants out of me now?
I don't have a clue.
I just meant…
I mean, it was just a thought.
[Martin clears throat]
[liquid trickles]
Fill me up, then.
-Are you sure?
-Yes, give me another.
-[chuckles softly] All right.
-[liquid pours]
Thank you.
It is disgusting.
[tense music playing]
[dog barking in the distance]
[Martin] Could it be that it's not him,
but someone who wants to be like him?
A copycat?
You know, I've read
quite a bit about that. Um, uh…
[Lejla] Mm.
You know more than me, of course.
But isn't it that
they don't just want to imitate,
but that they want to leave
their own mark somehow?
Mm. They're just
desperate attention grabbers.
If you want to be a kidnapper or murder
and don't know how,
then don't fucking do it.
-Ah… [chuckles]
-[laughs]
Sorry about my… morbid humour.
-[mobile phone rings]
-Uh… Oh.
Uh, actually, I need to take this call.
-Of course. Wait, no, don't worry.
-Sorry.
Stay there. I'll just go and…
You stay here.
-Are you sure?
-Yeah.
I won't be long.
-Yes?
-Where are you?
At Martin's.
From the search team, you know?
At the place he's rented in Åsarna.
[Valter] Have you heard
that another girl's gone missing?
Yes, I heard.
They have an address.
-What?
-Mm.
Are they certain?
Seems like it.
Tomas and the others are on…
on their way to Mora, where the flat is.
Um, I'm still at the station,
just so you know.
-Okay. Call me when you know more. Bye.
-Yes, I will. Bye.
What is it?
They know who did it.
[suspenseful music playing]
[pounding on door]
Police! Show yourself!
Police!
-[officer 1] Clear!

LEJLA HOMEWORK
"I'LL KILL HIM"
YOU ARE PRECIOUS
Tomas! Here.
[Jorun] Listen, this lady
who owns the flat, Vanja Frick,
her great nephew was sentenced
to forensic psychiatric care
three years ago
after a failed kidnapped attempt
of an 11-year-old girl.
[lock crunches]
What are you saying?
They granted him permission for leave
four weeks ago,
but he hasn't been in touch
with his support liaison since.
-So the hospital's reported it.
-Well, who is he?
Daniel Frick.
That's him.
Thirty-nine years old. Unlawful detention.
Assault against two girls.
Seven and fourteen years old.
[Lejla] This has been lovely.
-Yeah.
-But, uh…
-I think I should go now.
-Okay.
I think I need to be with Valter.
Yeah. Yeah, course.
Did he find something?
No, just that they were going to go to…
[dark music playing]
…Falun.
[breathes heavily]
Uh…
Can I have a glass of water?
Thanks.
[Lejla sighs]
[Martin] What were
they going to do in Falun?
Uh, no, it was… it was Mora.
-Mora, it was.
-[Martin] I see.
I've had it since birth.
Don't you like it?
[Lejla] It looks like a flower.
[Martin] Yes. Yes, it does, actually.
[mobile phone rings, echoes]
-[heartbeat pulses]
-[music becomes sinister]
Uh…
[high-pitch ringing]
[Lejla breathes heavily]
[heartbeat pulsing intensifies]
[Lejla breathing heavily]
[sinister music fades]
[gloomy string music rises]
[music fades]
