Black Winged Angels

1 (DISTORTED BIRD CALLS ECHO) (CROW CAWS) (INSECTS BUZZ) (BOTTLES TINKLE) (SNUFFLES) (HORSE WHINNIES) - (FREDDIE GRUNTS ON RECORDING) - (WOMAN GASPS, CHOKES) (DRAMATIC MUSIC BUILDS) My screams got lost in a paper cup Do you think there's a heaven where some screams have gone? Yeah, I can hear that I don't care 'Cause sometimes I sit Sometimes I hear my voice And it's been Here Silent all these years.
(GENTLE CHORAL MUSIC) Where is everybody? - Freddie, please - Shut up! (ECHOES) I'm freezing.
You're freezing? Well, lucky you.
It means you're alive.
I thought we were friends, Freddie.
(SCOFFS) Are you insane? We are not friends.
I don't have any friends.
What do you want? Stay away from me! I've done enough.
- Who are you talking ? - Shut up! (ECHOES) You can't make me do any more! It's happening my way now! Mine! Who are you talking to? You wouldn't understand.
- Aah! - (SCREAMS) (CLOCK TICKS LOUDLY) He was such a good boy when he was younger.
Normal, like.
He used to play with the other kids.
Sometimes he was a little rough, but, then when the accident happened everything changed.
What accident was that? He was in the car with his father when they ran off the road, into a lake.
They'd been fishing.
The paramedics told me he was lucky.
His heart had stopped for seven minutes.
And your husband? Freddie was never the same after.
I tried to get him help after the accident but no-one would listen.
He wasn't chopping wood on Sunday night, was he, Shelly? You lied for him.
I didn't realise what he'd done.
And what was that? MOLLY: You're not helping him.
Did he tell you he killed Dorothy Moxley? (WEEPS) I saw the news.
When I heard that she was wrapped in barbed wire well well, I MOLLY: You what? You what? I saw a roll of wire in the shed later that night.
When I was putting the rubbish out.
- MOLLY: Do you know who the woman was? - No, I swear.
- Where is he now? - I don't know.
I don't believe you.
Do you have any idea why he might want to harm Jeremy Coleman? Sea Dog.
He loved him like a father.
He would never hurt him! He might have a backpack belonging to a girl who was murdered 20 years ago.
I told you, I clean Freddie's room every day and I've never seen that backpack before.
I would have noticed.
Where is he, Shelly? I don't know.
I swear I don't know! ALEX: I think she's telling the truth.
- About what? - Not knowing his whereabouts.
A mother would say anything to protect her child.
- She's not protecting him.
- She thinks she is.
GRIMSHAW: We need tangible evidence to link Freddie to the crime scene.
We're waiting on tyre-mark comparisons from the Coleman murder.
Thanks, Freya.
MOLLY: Hey, Freya, can you do me a favour? Just got a call from a petrol station outside Maydena.
They reckon they've got CCTV footage of a red truck clocked there at 7:30pm last night.
Thank Christ.
Get the CCTV footage downloaded now so we can confirm it.
7.
30 last night, he could be anywhere now.
(PHONE RINGS) Yeah, hang on.
Detective McGee? - Just take a message.
- He says it's urgent.
Alright, I'll talk to Shelly, see if Maydena has any significance.
Thanks, Alex.
Yeah? What do you mean she's not in school? Boss? She wasn't with me last night.
She went home to you.
What? About 6:00.
- I had to go to I had to go to a job.
- Molly.
Yeah, look, I know.
I know, alright, Toby? I know.
Molly! Lily's not in school.
- Molly! - What? Get over here.
You need to see this now! (GASPS) GRIMSHAW: Freddie's got Lily.
Oh, my God! Francis, call the Maydena police.
Maydena.
What else is around there? He's heading for the dam.
Shelly's got a picture of the dam on the wall in the shop.
It's the only place to go from there.
I'll drive.
(CHORAL MUSIC PLAYS) (EERIE RUMBLING) (BREATHES HOARSELY) (WHOOSHING) (PHONE RINGS) Councillor Clunes can see you now.
FREYA: Thank you for seeing me at short notice.
My assistant tells me you are from the Special Investigation Unit? That's right.
Senior Constable Freya Harris.
Are you working on the murder of that woman? Yes, but my visit isn't about that.
How can I help you? I'm here to ask you about the contract process the Council is handling on the land at Minor Ferry.
What about it? Up until late May, it was zoned agricultural, is that right? Yes.
And your department has just rezoned it as residential.
Yes.
I oversee a number of rezoning projects to foster investment.
That rezoning came very soon after the land was purchased by McAvaney Constructions.
Well, the region is growing.
Good business moves fast.
Is there a problem? Apparently, there are plans to build a new housing estate on the city fringes.
Yes.
We've just approved a call for submissions, as you say.
Are McAvaney Constructions one of the applicants? Yeah, I'd imagine so.
Mr.
McAvaney's business and land are well suited.
You know Mr.
McAvaney well? Well, it's a small business community.
We spoke at an event recently.
As I did with several others.
I'm sorry, what is it exactly that's being investigated here? Just making inquiries at this stage.
Hmm.
On behalf of who, exactly? My superior.
Detective Sergeant Molly McGee.
(THUNDER RUMBLES) ALEX: He may have just taken her for a ride.
You said they're friends, right? He's killed two people, Alex.
We still need confirmation on that.
He's doing this to get back at me.
Why? Daisy.
He blames me for her death.
That was nothing to do with you.
(SIGHS) She called me that night.
Daisy called you? I didn't pick up.
I used to help her out a lot when she was living on the street, but she's got foster-parents now.
What time did she call? (SIGHS) 7:00pm or so.
If I'd answered, we'd probably have him by now and Daisy wouldn't be dead.
You can't blame yourself.
And now he has Lily.
(THUNDER RUMBLES) (PHONE BUZZES) Jacinta.
What's up? - Hey, wait, wait.
Slow down.
Slow down.
- (KNOCK ON WINDOW) Yeah, calm down.
Just take a breath.
What did they want? No, no, I can't meet right now.
(SIGHS) Alright, look, I can meet you at the usual place at 6:00.
Okay, don't don't worry.
I'll be there.
(SIGHS) (CROW CAWS) (SIRENS WAIL) Can't see a girl down there.
MAN: Do you want me to go down? Strict orders to wait.
Find out how far away the emergency services are.
(THUNDER RUMBLES) ALEX: Molly! (YELLS) Freddie! Where's Lily? Freddie, please! Stay here.
We've got a negotiator on his way.
Looks like Mummy finally arrived.
About time Detective.
Where's Lily? (LILY SOBS) Mum, help! (LILY SCREAMS) - Go! - Molly, wait, wait.
Wait for the negotiator.
Wait for the negotiator.
Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh Freddie, let her go.
If you want to talk to me, I'll come down to you.
FREDDIE: No, it's too late for that.
You weren't there for Daisy.
Freddie, we're gonna try and get a phone down to you.
Is that okay? Please don't hurt her, Freddie.
I'll do whatever you want! An eye for an eye, Detective.
Just keep him talking while we get in the medics.
- Okay.
- LILY: Help me! I'm gonna come down and talk to you, alright, Freddie? Please, she's a good girl.
Please don't hurt her! LILY: Let me go, Freddie! FREDDIE: Daisy was a good girl too.
She wouldn't hurt a fly.
All she wanted was someone to help her and that's what I did.
I helped her.
What did you do, Freddie? Tell Detective McGee about the video you got.
Show her! What video is he talking about? It came through on my phone yesterday afternoon.
I was trying to tell you.
Watch.
- Watch! - (GASPS) (CRIES) (PHONE BEEPS) LILY: Who's coming to play tonight? What is this?! Well, obviously, Freddie sent it.
I was trying to get a trace on it but it's likely just a burner.
Not such a good girl after all, is she, Detective? (CRIES) - (SCREAMS) - Oh, my God, he's gonna push her! - Molly, Molly, Molly! - Hey! Hey, stop! (LILY SOBS) Let me go, Freddie! Let her go, Freddie.
(SHOUTS) Let her go, Freddie! (LILY SOBS) LILY: No! Freddie! (SCREAMS) WOMAN: (ON P.
A.
) Attention, all staff.
All clear.
- He's alive.
- Bloody miracle.
In a coma.
Head injuries.
We need to question Lily as soon as we can, while her memory's still fresh.
- ALEX: How is she? - She's tough.
Like her mother.
Molly and Toby, can I have a word? LILY: Sorry, Mum.
Hey.
You're safe.
That's enough for me.
- GRIMSHAW: Molly, sorry.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We'll just be over there.
Hey, Lily.
Detective O'Connell and myself need to ask you a few questions, if that's okay.
Hi, Lily.
We met the other day.
I remember you.
So, who was this guy? Did she know him? He's a suspect in a double murder.
Lily doesn't know that yet, so best to keep it that way for now.
I'll need one of you here, as a responsible adult.
I guess that'd be me, wouldn't it? Lily, we know you've been through a lot, so we'll try and be as quick as possible, okay? - Is he dead? - No.
But he's in a critical condition.
How do you feel about that, Lily? I I sort of feel sorry for him.
Why's that? He's upset about losing Daisy.
I think it's sending him crazy.
Why do you say that? He was talking to someone up at the dam.
GRIMSHAW: Do you know who he was talking to? No, I couldn't see anyone.
TOBY: Hey You feeling okay, sweetheart? We can stop any time.
GRIMSHAW: It won't take much longer.
Lily, why do you think he was trying to hurt you? I don't think he wanted to hurt me.
I think he was bluffing.
How do you know? He knew Mum would come and find me.
Why do you think he wanted your mother there? He was angry she didn't help Daisy.
But it wasn't really Mum he wanted to talk to.
It was you.
It was you, Alex.
Why why did he want to talk to me? He said he had something important to tell you.
A message to pass on.
From Jenny.
(WIND HOWLS) (WAILING SIRENS ECHO) (GROANS SOFTLY) - (GUNSHOT ECHOES) - (KNOCKING) (WHISPERS) Oh, God Sorry, I You alright? Listen, back there, Lily, she she's got an active imagination.
She's in shock.
(ALEX SIGHS) Are you gonna take her home? She's going home with her father.
I'll get to visit later.
I'm sorry about the video.
I wanted to tell you about it but things got crazy.
I'm just glad it was sent to you and not Toby.
Are you gonna tell him? I don't know.
I have to speak to her first, find out what the hell she was doing.
I feel so bloody guilty.
Don't blame yourself.
You remember us at that age (SCOFFS) Yeah.
Bucket bongs.
- (BOTH LAUGH) - In my bedroom.
Ahh What about Freddie? I guess we have to wait for him to come out of the coma.
You know how you asked about the earring the other day? - Why I had it.
- I - None of my business.
- I found it.
On the deck at Ben's.
It was, uh It was like I felt her there.
And then I turned around and it was on the ground.
Why don't you ask Lewis to let you go? - I mean, we can get someone else.
- No.
No, if this crime has anything to do with Jenny's murder, then I want to know.
Okay.
(WIND CHIMES JANGLE) We bind the earth by word of your commandment and seal it by thy terror.
(CLATTERING, WIND HOWLS) (FLAME CRACKLES AND SIZZLES) My word, like fire and hammer that breaks the rock (WIND HOWLS) (FLAME CRACKLES AND SIZZLES) OSCAR: We know the legal owner of Millstock is the deceased Thomas Belfour.
Using clearances, we managed to get - access to Millstock's banking records.
- Their business is specialist packaging supplies.
Middle man for the farming sector, and they sell in bulk.
But what we learnt is Millstock seems to have only one significant client.
Hollowes Inc.
Aren't they owned by Bible bashers? Star of the Forest Church.
OSCAR: Correct.
Officially a registered charity-for-profit business.
Charity for profit? What does that mean? It means they they run like a company but they don't pay tax.
All profits are meant to go back into charity work.
No wonder Hollowes is huge.
They own half of Tasmania.
OSCAR: So, here we have Millstock, a tiny company that sells bulk quantities of boxes to a company owned by a church.
So, Hollowes Inc are potentially ploughing money into Millstock without any real way of tracking how much packaging they're actually using.
That's what it seems like.
ALEX: So, uh, Dorothy Moxley, or whoever she is, is possibly running a money-laundering business for the church.
And judging by the amount of cash in her house, she could have been skimming her own profit on the side.
Well, that could be dangerous.
Possible motive? We looked into the found banknotes.
None of them marked or registered.
Well, it's not really surprising.
She's likely withdrawing the money in small amounts, over a long period of time.
We're interviewing all the employees of Hollowes.
Freya, can you get us a list of all of the companies associated with the Star of the Forest Church, including offshoots of Hollowes? On it.
ALEX: The question is where does Freddie Hopkins fit into all of this? He's the one we need to focus on.
- (MEDICAL EQUIPMENT BEEPS) - (INDISTINCT P.
A.
ANNOUNCEMENT) WOMAN: Can I help you? Sorry.
Wrong ward.
- (INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS) - (PHONES RING) (CRUNCHES) GEORGIA: Hey, Detective.
What have you got there, George? Found this in Freddie Hopkins' truck.
Thought you might be interested.
What's going on? Looks like a school diary.
GEORGIA: Hillscrest.
Norman Grant.
That name's familiar.
Wasn't he that kid who drowned on school camp a couple of years back? FREYA: He was from Hillscrest.
They never found his body.
Talks a lot about his teacher, Edwina Morgan.
(SCOFFS) Look at this.
ALEX: Teacher infatuation? You call that infatuation? What the hell is Freddie Hopkins doing with it? And another possession belonging to a dead kid from Hillscrest.
Hillscrest is run by the Star of the Forest Church, right? It's an independent school.
It's not owned by the church.
Yeah, but a lot of them go there, don't they? Yeah.
They do, yeah.
It's family tradition, I suppose.
So, when did it turn into a boarding school? Wasn't it some time in the '90s? You were one of the first to go there, right? Uh it was a year after.
I remember Dad saying it got a hefty donation and a new board when I was in Grade 8.
How much is hefty? Well, enough to add an agricultural department, as well as turn it into a boarding school.
- So, millions? - Well, a few, I'd say.
So, how'd you cope with all the changes at Hillscrest, all black-winged angels and rosary beads.
Rosary beads are Catholic.
So, what about the black-winged angels? Uh, those are the shadows that follow us around and whisper in our ears in our darkest moments.
So, you started rowing for Hillscrest in Year 8? The first year, we won the championships.
Isn't that the same year that Gareth McAvaney came to school, '95? Molly enough with Gareth McAvaney.
But I'm right, aren't I? Yes.
Yes, it was the same year Gareth arrived.
That's partly why we won the championships.
So, where'd he come from? You said he had a poor education.
Well, very little.
He never spoke about his family, though, if I think about it, he seemed to know William Fian.
The deputy principal? Well, he was the rowing coach then.
He was the best coach around at the time.
Don't you think it's odd? He shows up with no education, no history, no background, to a private school at the same time a mysterious multimillion-dollar donation is made? Not really.
I mean, like me, he could row and Hillscrest had the best rowing coach in Tasmania.
Feels like a coincidence to me, and you know how much I hate coincidences.
You have an unhealthy obsession with Gareth McAvaney.
See you tomorrow.
(MUFFLED CONVERSATIONS) (JAZZ PIANO MUSIC PLAYS SOFTLY) - Hey.
- Hey.
(SIGHS) Cheers.
(SIGHS) Why all the urgency? We have a problem.
Okay, what sort of problem? The proposal.
You have to stay out of it.
What are you talking about? I've had the police in my office today, with questions about Minor Ferry.
What were they asking? The timing of you buying the land and then the council rezoning it so quickly.
Right.
I'm serious, Gareth.
(CHUCKLES) What's that got to do with the police? Well, they think, with the profit that you made with the rezoning, there might be something suspicious going on.
(SCOFFS) Gareth, if you put in a proposal for the housing estate, they will be all over you.
What did you tell them? I didn't tell them anything.
Then they have nothing.
People know we're together.
I wouldn't say we're together.
You know what I mean.
Yeah.
And you know how many millions I've sunk into this.
I know.
But you're not listening to me.
We could go to jail.
Jacinta, I have to put McAvaney Constructions forward, and you have to support me.
That was the deal.
And what about the police? Forget the police.
They're going to pursue this.
She told me so.
Well, who is it at the police?! I'll go talk to them.
It's Detective McGee or something.
(SIGHS) (HISSES) Jacinta (LOUDER) Jacinta! Mo Molly McGee.
It's Molly McGee.
Do you know her? Ahh - How do you know her, Gareth? - Bitch.
She she - What? - Okay.
Baby, she is out to destroy me.
Okay? And you have to believe me, this what That has got nothing to do with this, okay? Listen, you Trust me.
You just you just go ahead as we planned, okay? Everything's gonna be fine.
She's bluffing.
You've gotta trust me on this.
Do you trust me? - Please - I can't, Gareth.
- You No, no.
- I can't.
- No, you can.
- I'll lose everything.
I can't.
- Ahh - You can bitch! Okay, I'm sorry.
No, no, wait, wait.
- Aagh! Ow! F - (ENGINE STARTS) No, wait, wait, wait, wait! I'm sorry! Jacinta! (TYRES SCREECH) (TYRES SCREECH) She's tired, so don't keep her too long, okay? Lily? Mum.
How you feeling? Okay.
Tired.
Has Freddie regained consciousness yet? It's nice of you to care about him, after everything he put you through.
(DOG BARKS) (OWL HOOTS) Mum I need to tell you about the videos.
Why did you do it, Lily? I was angry with you and Dad.
Please, can you promise you won't tell him? Please On one condition.
Anything.
You go get some counselling.
(SNIFFS) That's the deal.
I'll come with you.
And then when I'm finished with this job, I'm gonna take some time out so we can spend more time together.
I owe you that.
Can we go on a holiday? Yeah.
Sure.
Why not? Time for Lily's dinner.
Gonna see you tomorrow.
I want to stay with you, Mum.
I'd like that, too.
ANGELA: Here you go, Lil.
This'll make you feel better.
ANGELA: Here you go.
ANGELA: (WHISPERS) You okay? Yeah.
Thanks.
I'll drop past tomorrow.
Molly I've applied for a court order.
I don't want Lily staying with you anymore.
What? - You can't do that.
- I can.
You're not a responsible parent.
I'll appeal! Oh, look, you can make your case in court mediation, but you're gonna lose.
Please, don't do this to me, Toby.
She could have been killed last night.
The paperwork's been submitted.
(SIGHS) And you can fight me all you want, but that won't help Lily, and you know it.
- Toby, please, don't do this! - (DOOR CLOSES) (ENGINE ROARS) (CAR HORN BLARES) (CAR HORN BLARES REPEATEDLY) (TYRES SCREECH) (CAR HORN BLARES) No! (SOBS) (TYRES SCREECH) (ENGINE ROARS) Stop! (TYRES SCREECH) (CRASHING) (TYRES SCREECH) (PANTS) Ahh (SOBS) (ENGINE HISSES) (COUGHS AND SPLUTTERS) Aagh! Agh (PANTS) Gareth call for help.
(GROANS) Help me (SOBS) Help me, help me, help me Please, help (SOBS) Aah (JACINTA SOBS AND GAGS) (PANTS FRANTICALLY) Ah (WHIMPERS) (JACINTA FALLS SILENT) (PHONE BEEPS) Help me, please! I've I've just witnessed an accident.
Please! (OWL HOOTS) (GLASS JANGLES SOFTLY) (HORSE NEIGHS NEARBY) (JARS AND BOTTLES CONTINUE JANGLING) (ADAGIO FROM BEETHOVEN'S 'EMPEROR CONCERTO' PLAYS) (GRAMOPHONE CRACKLES) (DOOR KNOCKER CLANGS SLOWLY) ('EMPEROR CONCERTO' CONTINUES ON GRAMOPHONE) Hmm.
I've been waiting for you Stephanie.
(BABY CRIES SOFTLY) (SIRENS WAIL IN THE DISTANCE) (INSECTS CHIRRUP) (SIGHS) (DROPS LIPSTICK) (UNSETTLING MUSIC)
