Their skin's like stone.
All that I've done has been for us.

Andy, and Danai and I
broke out the season
what the episodes would be.
In this episode, episode four,
we knew what it was.
It was the reckoning
of their relationship.
And Danai was like, yeah,
I'm writing that one.
LINCOLN: Rick's behavior is
so erratic and bizarre
and uncharacteristic and hurtful
that I think she has
no other alternative
but to pull him out of a helicopter.
I can't believe you did that.

GIMPLE: Danai is an
Obie-winning playwright.
She's done writing for screen as well,
and it was incredibly
difficult territory.
This is arguably
the most emotional episode,
and she essentially show
ran this episode, too.
I wanted to defer to her vision.
The funny part was that
I literally was like saying no,
the lady at, who was the corpse,
she has to look deader than this.
And then I'm telling Andy, you know,
like going through notes
of what the storyline
is about with him, you know?
So it was interesting changing of hats.
It was really just cool to really
get into her point of view on Michonne
and the way that the character
would approach this relationship
and these incredibly vulnerable moments.
There was an authenticity to it
that I really appreciated just
seeing and being a part of.
I try to get you out of here alive
and and you pull us out
of a goddamn helicopter!
That's because I don't like
who you are with them.
LINCOLN: She realizes that this
trauma that's happened to him
has changed him irrevocably
and turned him into someone
that she doesn't recognize,
and he acknowledges that.
Look at me.
They won a long time ago.
At the core of it is
that she has to become
the right vessel
to help him to his healing,
and she's not there yet
because she had an expectation
of what their reunion would be.
And he is not meeting that expectation.
So she has to get through
the hurt of that
and she has to get through,
you know, taking that personally.
GIMPLE: And he's lost
a certain perspective
and an ability to go into things
with a certain fearlessness
that maybe he doesn't possess currently,
for all the things he's lost
because he's seeing this thing
that he let go, his everything.
She's right in front of him
and he's with her,
and this means he'll lose her,
and that screws him up.
[GASPS]
We start with anger
but in seeing the fear and
the trauma, she realizes,
oh, damn, you aren't who you were.
You were trying to come home.
I was trying to come home.
But I can remind you and
I can lead you back there.
I think it's a real beautiful
way that she portrayed
how we, in relationships,
can save each other.
GURIRA: Then when he still talks
about going back to the CRM,
that's when she knows she has
to excavate this issue fully.
[RUMBLING]
- We gotta get out of here.

That's an epic love story scene
because she doesn't care
that this building's
going down around them.
What's most important is
they need to get to their truth
with one another. That's who they are.
And it's that type of crazy love
that they have for each other
that causes that moment to come to life,
and allows him to finally
break through the walls
of his own imprisonment
that he's been in
because of this trauma
and because of this captivity.
We wanted to show
this incredible cohesion
and then the badassery
of them kicking ass
as they exit the apartment
block before it falls.
And you see that fun and the return
of these two Characters.
[WALKERS GROWLING]
GURIRA: It was kind of
this cocoon for them.
This cocoon was created for these two
to figure themselves out.
And it was a question,
are they going to come out
of there butterflies or moths?
And it completed its purpose
and fell to dust.

GIMPLE: At the end of this story,
they are in a really good place.
They have connected and
they've faced some things
and they've gotten honest.
And, you know, it's like
the dream has come true.
They can go back to their lives,
and they can leave that fear behind.
They can leave that trauma behind.
They can leave that anger behind,
and we probably should
have ended it right there
and everything would have been cool.
But this is "The Walking Dead".

what the episodes would be.
In this episode, episode four,
we knew what it was.
It was the reckoning
of their relationship.
And Danai was like, yeah,
I'm writing that one.
LINCOLN: Rick's behavior is
so erratic and bizarre
and uncharacteristic and hurtful
that I think she has
no other alternative
but to pull him out of a helicopter.

GIMPLE: Danai is an
Obie-winning playwright.
She's done writing for screen as well,
and it was incredibly
difficult territory.
This is arguably
the most emotional episode,
and she essentially show
ran this episode, too.
I wanted to defer to her vision.
The funny part was that
I literally was like saying no,
the lady at, who was the corpse,
she has to look deader than this.
And then I'm telling Andy, you know,
like going through notes
of what the storyline
is about with him, you know?
So it was interesting changing of hats.
It was really just cool to really
get into her point of view on Michonne
and the way that the character
would approach this relationship
and these incredibly vulnerable moments.
There was an authenticity to it
that I really appreciated just
seeing and being a part of.
I try to get you out of here alive
and and you pull us out
of a goddamn helicopter!
That's because I don't like
who you are with them.
LINCOLN: She realizes that this
trauma that's happened to him
has changed him irrevocably
and turned him into someone
that she doesn't recognize,
and he acknowledges that.
Look at me.
They won a long time ago.
At the core of it is
that she has to become
the right vessel
to help him to his healing,
and she's not there yet
because she had an expectation
of what their reunion would be.
And he is not meeting that expectation.
So she has to get through
the hurt of that
and she has to get through,
you know, taking that personally.
GIMPLE: And he's lost
a certain perspective
and an ability to go into things
with a certain fearlessness
that maybe he doesn't possess currently,
for all the things he's lost
because he's seeing this thing
that he let go, his everything.
She's right in front of him
and he's with her,
and this means he'll lose her,
and that screws him up.
[GASPS]
We start with anger
but in seeing the fear and
the trauma, she realizes,
oh, damn, you aren't who you were.
You were trying to come home.
I was trying to come home.
But I can remind you and
I can lead you back there.
I think it's a real beautiful
way that she portrayed
how we, in relationships,
can save each other.
GURIRA: Then when he still talks
about going back to the CRM,
that's when she knows she has
to excavate this issue fully.
[RUMBLING]
- We gotta get out of here.
- No.
That's an epic love story scene
because she doesn't care
that this building's
going down around them.
What's most important is
they need to get to their truth
with one another. That's who they are.
And it's that type of crazy love
that they have for each other
that causes that moment to come to life,
and allows him to finally
break through the walls
of his own imprisonment
that he's been in
because of this trauma
and because of this captivity.
We wanted to show
this incredible cohesion
and then the badassery
of them kicking ass
as they exit the apartment
block before it falls.
And you see that fun and the return
of these two Characters.
[WALKERS GROWLING]
GURIRA: It was kind of
this cocoon for them.
This cocoon was created for these two
to figure themselves out.
And it was a question,
are they going to come out
of there butterflies or moths?
And it completed its purpose
and fell to dust.
♪
GIMPLE: At the end of this story,
they are in a really good place.
They have connected and
they've faced some things
and they've gotten honest.
And, you know, it's like
the dream has come true.
They can go back to their lives,
and they can leave that fear behind.
They can leave that trauma behind.
They can leave that anger behind,
and we probably should
have ended it right there
and everything would have been cool.
But this is "The Walking Dead".
