Despite strong isolationist sentiment
across a nation
just emerging from the Great Depression,
the American people
have broken tradition tonight
to reelect President Roosevelt.
He has defeated
dark horse candidate Wendell Willkie,
a businessman who had
never run for political office.
Is this a mandate
to join Great Britain's bruising battle
against the Nazis?
Europe holds its breath
[scoffs]
[chuckles]

I came straight to the docks.

and protect American lives.
They haven't put anybody in jail.
They don't have any blood on their hands.
[sighs]

none of us can predict
the exact consequences of our actions,
but knowing that
does not justify inaction.
