Unnatural History s01e04 Episode Script
Heart of a Warrior
My name is Henry Griffin.
I've spent my whole life living in exotic places.
And I learnt a great many things.
I also had the habit of getting in trouble.
A lot of trouble.
So to keep me safe, my anthropologist parents shipped me off to The one place I had never lived - America.
Now I live with my uncle and cousin trying to fit in at Smithson High, a school inside the National Museum Complex.
I work in the museum's basement where they store all kinds of weird stuff.
Where were you raised; in a cave? Only for a year.
Want to know what I have learned so far? No matter how hard I avoid it; Trouble always seems to find me.
Can you hurry? Can you slow down? Look at it! It is so incredibly Creepy.
How can you say that? It looks like a giant bug; Giant bugs are creepy.
It is the samurai armor.
They were the fiercest, bravest, most skilled warriors that ever lived and the definition of noble.
Wow.
An authentic katana.
The samurai dedicated their entire life to the warrior's code.
They were experts in fighting, riding, deceptions, survival.
Death itself could not defeat them because they believed their souls lived on in their swords - always ready to fight again.
Henry, shouldn't you be getting ready for your match? I had to see this stuff up close first.
Don't get too close, the curator at the exhibit's last stop said these things were haunted.
Haunted, haunted? Like how? Weird noises, floating specters; you know things move from here to there.
Normal paranormal stuff.
You should put them near the Emperor's exhibit; maybe it will stop kids from putting gum on it.
Well since being a tourist attraction probably is not in this guy's warrior code let's not do anything to provoke himor his sword.
Welcome to the Japanese Cultural Center for the Kendo Exhibition between the Tokyo Youth Team and the Smithson High Martial Arts Club.
Kendo means the way of the sword and is the modern Japanese art of sword fighting.
Hoshi Homa from the Tokyo team is wearing a white ribbon.
Henry Griffin from the Smithson team is wearing the red ribbon.
What is it about chop-socky violence that awakens the male lizard brain? Well obviously you just don't appreciate that martial arts is a refined form of dance.
It's evocative, graceful, it's elegant.
Come on Henry kill him, crush him!! Wipe the mat with his entrails!! What? This the first school thing is doing; can I not be supportive? We're warriors Maggie, it is hard wired into our DNA.
So is male pattern baldness.
[.]
Hfnry remember, you must first ground your soul in order to soar like falcon.
Match.
Japanese youth team.
Henry, did he hurt you? I'm okay, I think.
That was so the opposite of cool.
Jasper, how can you say that now? His ears are ringing so loud he can't possibly hear you.
Well I never saw that coming Which I thought he would be saying to me right about now.
You didn't see that coming either.
Henry Griffin got beaten by a girl.
On behalf of the Smithson High cultural exchange club I'd like to say a big 'aragato' to coach Kenji Homa and the Tokyo Martial Arts Club.
This amazing display of martial arts is just part of our Japanese cultural exchange week.
Don't forget the farewell dance on Saturday where we will say 'sianara' to our Japanese friends.
And be sure to visit the ghosts of the samurai exhibit now on display in the museum.
Who's there? I'm out of here! That move was supposed to surprise you.
What gave it away? Your eyes were flying but your feet were still on the ground.
The heart of the warrior kick is a complex move.
I have only seen it done once by a grand master.
I learned it in Oganawa.
You were taught it maybe, but if you had learned it you would have won the match.
It takes more than a weapon to be a samurai.
It requires the spirit to attack your enemy empty handed.
I am always honored to be instructed by a master.
Instruction is wasted if the student lacks the warrior's heart.
Well that's a first.
Usually people don't pile on the insults until after they get to know me.
Sorry, coach has always grouchy when he does not eat.
He skipped breakfast? And lunch and dinner - pretty much every day since we got here.
He is kind of a Japanese food snob.
Maybe you could train me.
I should get permission from my brother; he is sort of my guardian.
Let me talk to him; I can be very persuasive.
You just did and it did not go well.
He keeps me pretty busy training but if you want to meet me later I guess I could show you a few moves.
Great.
I' Henry by the way.
Hoshi, Let's go.
It was very nice to meet you Hoshi, I will see you later.
Now walk to the wall.
So what was that coach's problem? He was just hungry.
The point is he doesn't have a problem, I do.
Between classes and homework, my doom room schedule and martial arts practice, so many people are telling me what to do I can't focus.
I tried to meditate last night but my zazen was unbalanced I couldn't find my samati.
Is that some kind of Henry speak to get out of Maggie's dance? Most tribal societies dance to celebrate the hunt, to ask for rain or a healthy crop.
What's the ritual in cramming too many kids inside a confined space and assaulting them with noise pollution.
I thought you liked new things.
I do, but all the new things I keep trying is crowding out what's important.
How far to the end of the gallery? Twenty-five feet.
So who are you taking to the dance? I am way too busy planning and organizing and following up on things to actually think about socializing.
The tables are 42 inches in diameter, plus another two feet per In other words nobody asked you.
So that's 66 inches.
We'll call it 70 even.
I would just have to say no anyway.
So what; how do the boys expect to build character if they don't let us reject them.
So that is 12 tables from here to there.
Let's get two, it's called a dance, not a sit.
What about you? Nobody has asked me - yet.
Do you think it wise to stage a dance so close to the exhibit? Smithson High is closely affiliated with the museum, I can assure you our kids are well behaved.
But then again a little extra security wouldn't hurt.
Sorry about that.
Pardon me; are you not the young man from the exhibition today? You were very impressive.
Thank you.
Henry Griffin, Jasper Bartlett, this is Dr.
Takasaki, he is the cultural expert travelling with the Samurai exhibit.
That's just a nice way of saying I babysit mannequin.
Haunted mannequin from what we have heard.
The Samurai believes the warrior's spirit's eternal but I suspect the ghost rumors are more the result of over active imaginations Or perhaps shrewd marketing.
Miss Winnock, of all the stops on our tour this is the best organized.
I thank you.
It will all be worth it to see Henry Griffin all dressed up.
Shall we? What do you mean dressed up? Henry, that means no flip-flops, no shorts and if you're event thinking about wearing a tee-shirt, no pit stains.
This is an official school dance.
The dress code will be strictly enforced - which means buy something nice.
Buybuy? Bring Jasper and I will give you the employee discount.
Ringo's tats and leather? That's going to hurt.
That is another one you should have seen coming.
I really don't need the play by play.
Hey, its a small price to pay for letting you flaunt the rules.
You know she is not supposed to be here after hours.
Then why do you allow it? I enjoy watching Henry get his butt kicked, repeatedly, by a girl.
Don't you have someplace you need to be? As a matter of fact I have a hot date with my blueray player, but first I have to drop these off at the museum.
I hope those freaky Samurai don't jump me.
It's just a bunch of armor.
Tell that to the night staff at the last museum.
Ready to go again? I would love a rematch - but I don't know if my butt can take it.
Your problem is you are thinking too much.
You have to open your mind and listen to your instincts.
At least that is what Kenji says.
Seems like a tough taskmaster.
When he was my age he could have been a champion but he fell into a bad crowd and lost his chance.
I think that is why he pushes me, so I will be the champion he wasn't.
Is that what you want? Before my parents died I wanted to be a dancer, then Kenji became my guardian, he trained me in martial arts.
I do not want to disappoint him.
But you ended up disappointing yourself right? Maybe that's why I admire the Samurai.
Yeah, I know.
I mean there is something uncomplicated about living by your own code, doing what you know is right.
I mean did anybody ever live a great life doing what everybody else told them to do? Like the shogun Hitioshi.
He was such a great warrior that his Samurai revered him and when he died they cut out his heart and carried into battle.
You know about Hitioshi? His heart is a part of the museum's permanent collection.
Do you want to see it? Now? The museum is closed.
Not if the mind is open.
Great Shogun's heart.
The Emperor presented it to Teddy Roosevelt for helping to end Russia's war against Japan.
Kenji says it was stolen from its sacred resting place and that one day the samurai will rise and take it home.
Sounds like a threat.
More like a superstition for all his modern attitudes, he can be annoyingly old fashioned.
Hide, we are not supposed to be in here.
Kenji? Hoshi! What are you doing here? We could ask you the same thing.
You again.
I told you to go directly to the hotel.
Instead you make me come look for you and here you are sneaking around with strangers in places you are not supposed to be.
Henry and I were practicing late; We came to see the exhibit.
This is why you need a guardian.
Wait for me outside.
When I rejected you today it was a test of your resolve, to see if you would demonstrate your worthiness as a student.
Instead, by bringing my sister here un-chaperoned afterhours you have demonstrated your unworthiness.
We just came to see the shogun exhibit, that's all.
Well take a good look because that's as close as you will ever get to the heart of a samurai.
Wait a minute! I know why I was here; why were you? I told you - to find my sister.
Yeah, by trying to break into the shogun case? Don't provoke me or your next fight won't be with a girl.
That's not an answer! Hey! I know you are in here.
Whoever you are you are not going to get away with it! Henry, can you hear me? Dad, he's waking up.
Are you all right? I don't know.
What happened? I heard noises, the alarm went off.
When I turned around the shogun's heart was gone.
Then I was attacked.
By whom? By a samurai.
Henry, you mean that shogun's heart? It was gone, I know it was.
I wouldn't dismiss him so quickly.
I heard the same noises when I was in here just like at the other museums.
You are not seriously suggesting these things are haunted? Do you have a better explanation? Yeah, you have been working in the doom rooms too long.
When a person takes a blow to the head his brain can play tricks on him.
Plus I mean in Henry's case brain tricks are almost a preexisting condition.
What were you doing in here anyway? Hoshi want to see the shogun's heart.
That's what a cultural exchange is all about isn't it sharing cultures? Henry rules are in place for a reason.
You two should not have been in here.
You probably got too close to the exhibit and set off the alarm.
You're fortunate you did not do any damage.
He means cough up your access card.
I know what I saw.
I get what Uncle Brian is trying to say.
That guy is up to something.
He is guilty of an attitude problem.
I know you guys don't like him but that doesn't make him a thief, especially since nothing was stolen.
I am telling you that box was gone.
Well maybe I interrupted him and he was forced to put it back.
I thought you said he left with Hoshi.
Yeah, but after casing the place with whatever he put in that bag.
Maybe he doubled back or he could have had an accomplice.
The samurai ghost? Hoshi said her brother believes the samurai will rise up and take back the shogun's heart.
Maybe he's just helping them along.
It's too bad you didn't see what he put in that bag.
Not yet.
How are you going to do that; From what I have seen he never lets that bag out of his sight.
The samurai warrior uses his enemy's own energy against him.
Seriously, if his little sister beat you I am not going to fight him, I am going to feed him.
Bulls eye! Thank you so much for inviting us.
Thank the boys, it was their idea.
In the spirit of friendship we welcome you to our house.
Nice dress.
It's customary in America to unburden oneself when entering another's home - much like taking off your shoes in Japan.
To make any amends for any unintended difficulties between us I would like to prepare a traditional Japanese meal in your honor.
Let me guess; Lifornia rolls.
How am I doing Kenji san? Your knife-man-ship is no better than your swordsmanship.
I am always honored to learn from a master.
Who is your date for the [inaudible.]
dance? I am the event chairperson and I am kind of required to be there in an organizational capacity.
No one asked you? Should I make the whole meal myself? Huh? Hm? I trust you can take it from here.
Jasper, dinner is ready! Kenji añe you matched on the? Haven't you had enough? Japanese, find a pen, write it down.
Pen, pen Pen! Paper, paper! Paper! Paper, paper! Ink, ink, ink.
Hello Thank you for the wonderful meal Henry.
The [inaudible.]
was actually edible.
Thank you Henry.
Well, I will show you guys out.
You are never going to believe this.
I found a map of the museum in Kenji's bag, it was filled with notations pointing out exhibits, locations, and exits.
I was right.
He was casing the place.
All and all I would say that was a successful evening.
Oh yeah, great success.
Yes it was totally successful.
And I heard him speaking Japanese on the telephone; I wrote it down so I wouldn't forget.
Jasper did you get into the Saki? It's a phonetic representation.
I was hoping you could translate it for me.
Somewhere in all this gibberish I think I recognize the words museum and tonight.
Tonight? We can't just let him rip the place off.
I can't get in without a key card? I have one; I am chairperson.
Hey guys, you want to get started on the dishes? Uh, we have to help Henry find a suit for the dance.
At this hour? Midnight madness at the mall.
Oh, okay.
Just don't make it one of those tuxedo tee shirts okay.
And Henry this dance is not underwear optional.
If Kenji is breaking into the museum tonight he's not going to use the front door.
Henry look, you were right, it's Kenji! Wait if that's Kenji then who is that? Give it up Kenji, it's over! Hoshi! I'm sorry.
They were after something and they didn't get it.
Nothing is missing.
Then why were they running away? Hoshi was scared, I could see it in her eyes.
Of course she was scared, you caught her red handed.
It's not red handed if there is nothing in her hand.
What is this doing down here? Something must have scared them off.
Don't you remember, [inaudible.]
said these things were haunted.
Well he also said this isn't the first museum where weird things have happened.
Maybe there's a pattern.
It's too late to call around tonight.
Plus we have a more immediate problem.
If we don't come back with a suit for the dance dad is going to be all over us.
Where are we going to get a suit now? Midnight madness ended at 7:00.
I know somebody that will give us a discount.
Interesting choice.
I think it makes a statement.
Yeah, it say, yo, I'm the Fonz.
The what? Exactly.
Well Uncle B, all of the samurai armor and stuff is made of leather so I am actually being very true to the Goodnight.
All the leather and tattoo shops in the world you had to take me to Katja Cattleman's.
She has been trying to pierce me since the 8th grade.
Whoa, where are you going? I need to talk to Hoshi.
Yeah, I think after that kick to the chest, I think it's safe to say that she doesn't want to talk to you.
She hasn't done anything wrong yet and if I can convince her not to I can keep her out of trouble.
Whoa whoa, just hold up, just hold up for a second.
Look, didn't you tell me yesterday that your zulu was unfocused and you couldn't find your salami? That was before you took a knock to the head.
It was my zazen and my samati.
What are you trying to say Jasper? I am trying to say that there is a fine line between determination and obsession.
I know something is going on with the samurai exhibit and Kenji is up to his neck in it.
Hoshi is just scared.
I can tell she needs help.
Okay look Henry, I don't refuse to not completely disbelieve you, I just, I bet even a samurai needs to sleep every once in a while, you know, to recharge his zazen or atever it is.
No more hammock jokes? Tonight only.
Tomorrow it's back to antagonizing you.
You should really be nicer to Katja; She is not going to bite.
Says you.
I know filed teeth when I see them.
I don't see Kenji.
Good, I will have better luck with her if he is not around.
Please, just stay away from me.
Why? I know you are not a thief.
You don't know anything about me.
Is this guy bothering you? We're just talking.
She does not want to talk.
This is between her and me; It's none of your business.
I am making it my business.
Nobu, please.
You chicken; gobble, gobble? That's a turkey.
I know there's a cultural gap, but come on.
Knock it off! I'll knock you off.
Henry let's go, it is not worth it.
Kenji was right, you're no warrior.
See the tattoo? Yeah, you think you can draw it? Jasper, I knew your inner tiger was crying to get out.
Stop by the shop, I will get you inked up.
What? No, no, no, this is not for me.
I just want to know if you recognize it.
It's the Yakuza tatoo.
.
What's the Yakuza? Japanese mafia, really bad, really dangerous guys.
They style themselves after the samurai but they are just common criminals who enforce their code through violence and intimidation, not honor.
No wonder Hoshi is scared.
You really should stop by.
We have this tiger tat that would look fierce on your bicep.
Katja you think I have biceps? Thank you for your help.
I'll catch you at the dance.
Seriously Jasper, I am going to catch you and make you dance with me.
The Yakuza claim they are descendants of the samurai, they think that stuff belongs to them and they'd do anything to get it back.
Is Hoshi one of them? The Yakuza is strictly a men's club but they might be using her.
Question is, for what? I called the last two museums where the samurai tour stopped.
Both pulled items from their Japanese collections after the team left.
Apparently there were quens of authenticity.
That's it! What's it? The sword.
The samurai carried only one katana, it was forged to exact specifications, no two are alike.
Listen to this - the hilt is hollow and the blade is made of a cheap alloy.
It's manufactured not handmade.
Now check this out It's a duplicate.
The thieves are stealing the real artifacts and The shogun's heart.
I am happy to say the shogun's heart is authentic.
That's because we interrupted them - twice.
But that does not mean that they will not try again.
Are you sure you did not get a good look at them? It was dark I couldn't see faces.
I appreciate your discretion Henry, but I can guess who you suspect.
It is true, some of our team members have had troubled pasts, but martial arts have given them the focus and discipline necessary to straighten out their lives.
Since nothing is missing from the exhibit perhaps in the spirit ofhis cultural exchange we can rise above personal animosities and give each other the benefit of the doubt.
I would if I had any doubt.
A crime is being committed here and what I don't have is proof, not yet.
Henry wait up, you're twisting yourself into a pretzel trying to prove a crime that never happened.
Hasn't happened you mean.
Why are you pushing this so hard? Maybe because so many people want me to stop.
Maybe they are doing it because they care about you.
If they cared about me they would listen.
I have to follow my instincts.
Nice catch.
Just like the arrows used by Hitioshi's samurai in the 17th century.
Samurai or not, whoever shot that arrow meant business.
Great, so somebody is trying to kill us.
Or scare us off.
Killing would definitely accomplish that.
But who? I think I have a pretty good idea.
We need to talk.
Can't.
Someone tried to put an arrow through my head at 70 yards off.
I think we both know who.
Is Kenji involved with the Yakuza? I don't know but he has fallen in with some really scary guys.
I heard him on the telephone he was talking about stealing the shogun's heart.
Is that why you went to the museum? I wanted to stop him but when we got to the exhibit room someone jumped me.
What do you mean someone? All I saw was a tattoo.
I chased him and that iswhen you found me.
If you didn't do anything then why did you run? Because Kenji has been in trouble before.
If he gets in trouble again he could go to jail.
He's the only family I have left and I do not want to lose him so please just stay out of it.
So do you believe her? I want to but I don't know.
My instincts can't be that off.
The samurai exhibit leaves for the Tate in London tomorrow.
If they want the shogun's heart they will have to make their move tonight.
Assuming they still want it.
It's worth more to the Yakuza than money itself.
So how do we stop them? They'll be at the dance and we'll be at the dance so just stick to them every second and there is no way they can make a move.
Where's Maggie? I don't know.
Oh.
There she is.
Wow.
Ow! Whoa! If you wanted to dance all you had to do was ask.
I don't dance.
Ever? Some of us have better things to do with our time.
So the head of the dance committee doesn't dance? I've got two left feet okay, and these helps don't help so can we just drop it? I've got something for you.
Don't you think flowers are a little over the top? They are not flowers, they are boutonnieres.
That's where I hid the microphones.
What? My dad's garage is different from your dad's.
Testing one, two three.
I don't think mine is working.
Didn't they teach you anything in the jungle? Can you hear me now? Ow, oh! There they are.
Okay keep them under constant surveillance.
If anybody gets too close to the exhibits sound the alert.
Got it? Got it.
Let's do this.
I've got Kenji at the shrimp boat.
Copy that, keep an eye on him.
Roger that.
Oh my god! What is it; what's wrong? That guy just double-dipped the salsa.
Gross.
Katja! Love the pretty fleur Tres retro chic.
Very teen angel.
No touching.
No stalling, it's time to free that inner tiger.
Jasper, what are you doing abandoning your post? What choice do I have, she is trying to de-flower me in front of everybody on the dance floor.
Why are you talking to your flower? It's all right, I've got Kenji.
Whatever it's Jasper just shake it.
Oh great, I lost him.
Maggie, stay on him, you can't let him slip away.
Don't worry, found him.
Lost him! Maggie, behind you.
You are not very good at this.
Good at what? Been following me haven't you? Well Cover, cover.
As a matter of fact I have.
So what do you want? I want Ask him to dance! to dance.
But first let's try the edamamae.
A little help please? You two having fun? Bet you didn't teach her that! What's happening? I have just been informed the sound system is interfering with the museum's electrical circuits.
It could affect the security sensors.
I must insist we close this area in order to protect the artifacts.
I understand.
Sorry folks, we are experiencing some technical difficulties with the electrical system so we are going to have to wrap this up early.
I am very sorry.
On behalj of the entire Japanese Youth Team I would like to thank you for a wonderful stay in Washington.
Thank you, good night.
Where is Hoshi? I don't know.
Where's Kenji? He was right here.
So they vanished into thin air.
People don't just vanish into thin air.
Okay so they vanished into thick air.
The point is, they're gone.
Maybe [inaudible.]
was right, maybe these things are haunted.
How much you want to bet that tech meltdown wasn't an accident? What do you mean? Come on.
No, wait, where are we going? What is going on in that mind of yours? This is not the first time somebody disappeared in that exhibit room.
Please don't say it's ghosts.
How do you get inside of a locked museum without a key? You don't need one because you are already in when they lock up; like Hoshi and me the other night.
We were practicing late in the doom rooms, had the run of the place.
So Kenji didn't leave.
He is hiding somewhere in there.
So what do we do? We wait and when the coast is clear we let ourselves in with your key card and we catch him in the act.
Kenji? I know you are in here.
Come out and show yourself.
He's right behind me isn't he? Jasper find the shogun's heart.
Henry, let's wrap this up.
Henry are you okay? I'm fine but you better run.
Stupid shoes! Henry you've got to stop him.
He's got the shogun's heart! Henry, soar like the falcon! Henry the box.
Kenji? Nob Who is this? Dr.
Takasaki So when Henry tipped it over all this stuff just poured out.
The samurai Trojan horse.
Takasaki used it to sneak in the fakes and smuggle out the originals.
They even created a security malfunction at the dance so the alarms would not sound.
Then you are a cop.
Sort of.
The Ministry of Culture suspected Takasaki was using someone on the team to do his dirty work.
Since I had access they recruited me to infiltrate.
And you didn't know.
Until she caught me circling back here after the dance.
I managed to catch Nobu but I was a little late for the rest of it.
Better than never.
I couldn't have stopped them without you.
No hard feelings? Well besides all the bruises all over my body, I guess not.
I was wrong about you Henry, you do have a warrior's heart.
And you, I had forgotten that you could dance like that.
I didn't.
Well I suppose we better find you a master to hone your talents.
Did you just say what I thought you said? Of course you will have to finish high school first.
Then I guess we both owe you.
And I know exactly how you can repay me.
Oh? All right, you got this one in the bag.
You just do exactly what you did last night.
You do remember what you did last night right? I stopped thinking and I listened to my instincts.
Come on Griffin, I've got a plane to catch.
You think you are pretty good huh?
I've spent my whole life living in exotic places.
And I learnt a great many things.
I also had the habit of getting in trouble.
A lot of trouble.
So to keep me safe, my anthropologist parents shipped me off to The one place I had never lived - America.
Now I live with my uncle and cousin trying to fit in at Smithson High, a school inside the National Museum Complex.
I work in the museum's basement where they store all kinds of weird stuff.

They were experts in fighting, riding, deceptions, survival.
