Who Were We Running From? (2023) s01e04 Episode Script
Episode 4
[quirky classical music playing]
[mother] We'll leave here tomorrow.
There's an island across the way.
That's where we're going.
We'll be in Greece.
[Bambi] Is that where we'll live
from now on?
We'll see the world, Bambi.
Just like in the old days.
I really miss London.
And India, Goa.
Those were the days.
And we'll return.
And we'll have more good days.
Can we even afford that?
I'll take out every cent that's left.
Tomorrow, the bank will have
everything set to go for us.
I even got a boat ready.
And we'll never return again, right?
Who knows, Bambi?
We'll see.
[Bambi] You smile at me
so sweetly, Mother.
But I can feel you're nervous
about what could happen
if things go wrong.
WHO WERE WE RUNNING FROM?
[siren wailing]
Sir, we located their taxi,
- and it was taking them to the airport.
- Will you step on it? Come on!
[man 1] We're almost there, sir.
Yeah, we'll check the security footage
and determine which aircraft they boarded
and where they're flying.
POLICE
Got it, yes, sir.
Welcome, lieutenant.
Right this way.
Everything you asked for is ready.
Open the side entrance. Come on! Here.
[man over PA]
luggage with you at all times.
[tense music trails off]
[birds chirping]
This place is starting to become a memory.
It's like we're on the island already.
When we're there,
these flowers will remind us.
A souvenir of where we planned
our escape together.
If I had a ribbon right now,
I would teach you how to make a tiara.
Where did you learn that?
My grandmother taught me.
You had a grandmother?
[laughs] Of course, sweetie-pie.
I truly loved her.
All children have a grandmother, Bambi.
Well, I don't.
I never did.
[somber music playing]
Or a father, or a grandfather.
See, I've never had anyone but you.
[mother] Look. She gave me this ring.
Shortly before her death.
I'd have moved in with her
if she'd lived longer.
My life would have been a lot happier.
Here, put it on.
- What do you mean?
- Put it on.
It is yours now.
- Really, Mommy?
- Mm-hmm.
I'm sharing my grandmother
with you, Bambi.
Now I also have a grandmother.
[music trails off]
- [clerk speaking indistinctly]
- [elegant piano music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
[Bambi] Pardon me.
Do you have a white ribbon?
Um, excuse me, did you hear me?
[woman] What do you need?
May I help you with something?
Do you have a white ribbon?
A ribbon, huh? Hmm.
I do think we have some.
Yes, right here.
- What are you gonna do with it, dear?
- Making tiaras out of daisies with Mother.
Oh yeah, really?
These are so lovely!
- Thank you, um
- You're welcome.
[uneasy music swells]
The daughter has to have
Stockholm syndrome.
She did what her mother said
because she was afraid.
And as she became more afraid,
she became more attached.
That's what I thought, at least.
[sighs] It wasn't like that though,
was it?
The girl, she was in on it.
For her, being scared and on the run,
it's like mother's milk to her.
She sucks it down and grows stronger,
embracing all of it.
She welcomes anything from her mother.
If it wasn't for her daughter,
the mother would jump off a roof,
or OD on pills, I'm sure.
And I only realized it
when you guys got here,
after I figured out who they were.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Bambi] Is this okay, Mom?
[mother] It's just like
my grandmother showed me. Great.
[Bambi] Okay, now what should I do?
[mother] Just like this.
Do you like it?
It's gorgeous.
Here, put it on.
This looks so great!
- I want to make one!
- Go ahead.
All right.
So, first
[somber music playing]
We need to have a home, my baby.
You usually say
we can't live like that, though,
and that we only need each other.
I think the time has come now.
[Bambi] Mom's tired
of always living on the run.
On the run because of me.
[somber music playing]
They handed you to me after I had you,
and you were just so ugly.
Your face was blood-red and all wrinkly.
And you didn't even have a neck.
Did you worry I'd be ugly?
Wouldn't you have loved me anyway?
I hadn't seen an infant before you.
Well, I mean, that close.
You immediately went for my breast.
Your confidence was so intense.
Like I was your own
private drinking fountain.
I wasn't sure what to do.
I had never seen it,
and I wasn't used to it.
[Bambi] I understand
what you meant now, Mommy.
You never wanted me, did you?
[clicks tongue] I didn't, Bambi.
I thought, "What am I gonna do with her?"
I mean, this kid thinks
my breast is all hers.
And soon she'll want my soul soon, too.
[somber music continuing]
[crying]
[cry echoing]
[mother] If I keep her,
I'll live on the run forever,
but if I don't keep her,
I might not have to escape.
Was that really what you thought, Mom?
It sure was, my babe.
Then they took you over to the nursery.
[music intensifies]
[mother] And they put
a plastic bracelet on your wrist
with your name on it,
so they wouldn't confuse you
and so you wouldn't
get mixed up with the others.
Nobody knew who you were
or where you came from.
You wanted to run then?
Yeah, I did.
That night you were born,
I wanted to leave you
at the hospital and disappear.
[music intensifies]
She doesn't even know me, and
I'll forget about her easily, I thought.
I'm sure some of my distant
family members will adopt her.
[thunder rumbling]
Did you really try to leave me, Mother?
They got there
in their black cars that night.
All the relatives.
[music distorts, grows menacing]
I saw them get out as their chauffeurs
opened the doors for them.
I watched them looking at you
in the nursery, behind that glass.
My whole body was shaking
as I was seeing it all happen.
So, you didn't abandon me?
You didn't run away?
What happened? What's going on?
I couldn't, babe.
I couldn't run.
How could I leave
that poor, defenseless thing behind?
And And that's when I knew
you were really mine.
Because we could run together.
I knew we could do it. But I could
never run from you on my own.
I could never abandon
this poor, defenseless,
ugly, blood-red, six-pound baby.
Because she'd become something else.
Something that would love me.
She'll love me
like no one ever has before,
my daughter,
and I will love her.
My baby.
[birds cawing]
As requested, Lieutenant,
the camera footage is here.
Would you bring up
that footage of them boarding?
Will you zoom in right there, please?
Well, Captain, at this point
we've located the flight they took
and have an approximate location.
We already did, sir.
Yes, of course we alerted
the local authorities.
They're canvasing hotels as we speak.
Got it, we can probably be there
in about an hour or so, we think, sir.
Yes sir, copy that. Anything else?
Ten-four, sir.
The plane we need to catch
leaves in an hour.
Okay, let's go. Thanks, have a good one.
[elegant classical music playing]
- [mother] I'll put this one here.
- [Bambi] And this one can go over here.
Our room is so lovely now!
Another beautiful memory
to take to the island tomorrow!
You forgot about this.
[Bambi] Well, I put that aside on purpose.
It's a gift.
So, let me guess.
It's for the security lady.
You really like her.
- Here, sweetheart.
- Thanks, Mommy!
- Make it quick.
- Okay!
[classical music continuing]
[elevator dings]
- Hello.
- Hi there!
I made you this.
Aww, this is so sweet of you.
Aww, thank you, really.
I'm gonna wear this in my hair with pride.
And I'll remember you every time I do.
Well, I'll I'll miss you.
Such a sweetie pie! You are just so nice.
And also,
you can come back to visit any time.
I doubt it.
We're leaving here for good.
What do you mean?
Uh
leaving.
You going abroad?
I should get back to our room.
Okay.
Sweetheart, was there something else?
[gasps]
You're so wonderful.
Well, see you!
Okay, goodbye.
[whimsical classical music playing]
[hotel guests laughing]
Yes, it's the police.
Who am I speaking with?
If you'd shut up, I'd like to ask
about a guest at your damn hotel.
Why aren't you guys answering it? Damn it!
[officer] I'm looking
for a mother-daughter pair
Can you hear me, sir?
I just emailed their pictures over to you.
Can you identify either of them as guests?
Are you sure of that, sir?
Captain! Sir, we got 'em,
we got 'em, we got 'em!
Quiet! Quiet, now!
Can I speak with your head of security?
I'll put her on, Lieutenant.
- What is it?
- It's the police.
They're asking about the guests in 103.
Yes, I'm listening, Lieutenant.
Hello there, good evening.
We'd like to check if a couple of people
are currently guests at your hotel.
It's a security matter.
Uh, I'm just having my colleague
show me their photos.
Are the mother and daughter in the photo
staying at your hotel right now?
Yes, the girl and her mother are guests.
That's great. All right, great.
Is there any way I would be able to help?
No, no, we're coming.
Just stay calm for now.
- Got it, Lieutenant.
- We'll be there soon.
All right, let's move out, guys.
Let's go! Come on! Come on, guys! Move it!
Miss, what was that about?
They want to take a look around.
- Well, I wonder why?
- I guess we'll find out soon.
Okay then, let's get back to work.
[suspenseful music playing]
Hey, rookie! Are the vehicles ready?
They are waiting for us.
What are we waiting for?
Let's take that Snipper down!
- Move it!
- What's happening?
What do you mean?
It's just a mother and her daughter.
What are we preparing for?
Don't underestimate her.
The mother has killed a lot of people.
You guys didn't pay enough attention,
and she got away with it.
And there is no "we."
You and your deputy are staying put,
and I'm gonna go.
My team will take it from here, got it?
Come on! Let's move, guys! Come on!
Hurry up, get to the cars! Move it!
[intense music playing]
Fuck you and your team, you dick.
[music trails off]
[birds cawing]
[vehicles accelerating]
[suspenseful music playing]
[music trails off]
[clock ticking]
[tense music playing]
[ringing]
- Who is it?
- Hello, ma'am, this is the front desk.
Go ahead.
The police just called.
They were asking about you,
and they're on their way over here.
I thought you should be aware,
just in case.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
Bambi? Baby, are you awake?
Yes, Mother?
They're coming for us.
[suspenseful music playing]
I'll get the bags, Mommy.
I'll check the exit.
[Bambi] Is it okay?
We can leave now.
We need to hurry though.
We'll be ready super-fast, Mom! We're out!
Listen, take a few guys
and check around out back.
- All right, go on.
- You guys, come with me.
- Good evening.
- What's their room?
- 103.
- Give me the key, quickly.
Master key, give him the master key.
[music intensifies]
This is the police! Get on the ground
and put your hands behind your heads!
On the ground!
[music trails off]
[officer] Clear!
Clear!
How the hell is it clear?
- Sir!
- Where the hell are they?
- Sir.
- Yeah?
[officer] The window.
Motherfucker.
You had one damned job.
Get everyone over here.
Cover every street. Look all over.
We're gonna conduct an area search, okay?
I don't get it. Did they fly out of here?
[officer] Sir, a taxi!
- Huh?
- Two people just took off in a taxi!
Why the hell are you staring? Move! Move!
- Get to the cars! Move it!
- [officer] Go, go, go!
We gotta cut off that taxi, let's go!
[indistinct clamoring]
[suspenseful music continues]
[man 1] There it is, sir, I see it.
Faster, faster, faster, hurry, sir!
[man 2] All units, the suspects' vehicle
is approaching the waterside junction.
Proceed moving north.
[man 1] Over to the left, sir!
We can cut 'em off over that way!
[frantic honking]
- [siren blaring]
- [captain] Pull over right now!
Pull over, immediately!
[man 3] Freeze!
[man 4] Stop there! Freeze!
Open the door!
Step out of the car!
Move aside. Move!
[music swells, fades away]
Where'd they go? Huh?
- Where the hell have they gone?
- [passenger 1] What's the deal?
Officer, what's wrong?
Nothing.
Where the hell are they? Huh?
What are you looking at?
Back to the hotel. Let's go! Move it!
- [man 3] Okay, folks, move along!
- Let's go!
Well, my guess is that the lady
knew they might have to run any time.
She knew you'd been trailing them
and could have them arrested.
They must have left
right after they had their dinner.
Yeah? How'd you figure that?
I've run security for a while.
Really.
I could tell even her daughter was aware
that things could get ugly.
Sounds like you could write
a novel on the subject.
What I can't wrap my head around
is how you missed their escape.
[tense music playing]
Or you knew about it.
Excuse me, sir?
Have you checked the security footage?
They're checking the traffic cam footage
from the hotel entrance now.
[captain grunts]
[door opens]
[door closes]
Go back half an hour.
- Anything?
- No, not yet.
What about the airports?
There's nothing
on their security footage, sir.
Goddamn it, this is insane!
What about the bus terminal?
I checked it twice, sir. There's nothing.
- There's one thing I can't figure out.
- Yeah?
Let's say they did flee
after they finished dinner.
Why can't we find them
on any traffic cam footage?
What if they didn't leave the hotel?
[foreboding music builds]
- We're ready, Mom.
- Let's go, Bambi.
Soon this will all be a distant memory
once we get to our island.
Then let's get to our island!
Stay put.
[dog barking]
Careful. Let's go.
[suspenseful music playing]
[mother] All good?
[Bambi] We're good.
Wait a second.
Bambi, baby.
Yes, what is it, Mommy?
If we go out, they will hunt us down
and we won't get away. I can smell it.
So, what should we do?
We're gonna try something.
It's a little risky.
The lobby. We'll wait there.
- In the lobby? But aren't
- Mm-hmm.
I know it sounds crazy to you.
But believe me,
that's the last place they will check.
And if they do?
Baby, Mommy can smell it.
On the streets they can corner us.
But the lobby's deserted,
which for us is the best thing.
How about we sit in there
and hide in the dark until it's daylight?
Then we'll get in a cab
that drops off guests at the hotel,
and then fly away.
What do you say, babe?
Hmm?
If you say so.
Fabulous. Now come on.
Follow me.
[captain] Take a few guys
and check out back.
[man] All right.
[woman] Good evening.
- What's their room number?
- 103.
- The key, quickly.
- Master key, give him the master key.
[Bambi] There are too many of them, Mommy.
- I'm scared.
- Shh.
Just lay down
and stay as quiet as you can. Shh.
Because they will notice
any noise right away.
And if we don't stay quiet,
they will hear us from a distance.
[siren wailing in distance]
What the hell are you saying? Seriously?
I don't care. We're searching
the entire hotel, everywhere!
I just said they might still be there.
What don't you get?
I'm on my way, I gotta go. Gotta go!
- [man on radio] I want every room checked.
- [captain] All right, guys.
Anyone with good news?
- No, nothing yet, Captain.
- Is that right?
- Is this the lobby?
- This way.
[captain] My God.
Where could they have been hiding?
- [woman] Captain?
- Captain.
Captain, you've gotta see this.
This footage is from two hours ago.
It's from the traffic cam on the street.
He was right. They were still here.
[captain] Wait, pause the tape there.
Captain, is she smiling?
She is.
She is, yeah.
Right at us.
Making a fool out of us.
[suspenseful music builds]
[tense outro music playing]
[mother] We'll leave here tomorrow.

No, no, we're coming.
Just stay calm for now.
- Got it, Lieutenant.
- We'll be there soon.
All right, let's move out, guys.
Let's go! Come on! Come on, guys! Move it!
Miss, what was that about?
They want to take a look around.
- Well, I wonder why?
- I guess we'll find out soon.
Okay then, let's get back to work.
[suspenseful music playing]
Hey, rookie! Are the vehicles ready?
They are waiting for us.
What are we waiting for?
Let's take that Snipper down!
- Move it!
- What's happening?
What do you mean?
It's just a mother and her daughter.
What are we preparing for?
Don't underestimate her.
The mother has killed a lot of people.
You guys didn't pay enough attention,
and she got away with it.
And there is no "we."
You and your deputy are staying put,
and I'm gonna go.
My team will take it from here, got it?
Come on! Let's move, guys! Come on!
Hurry up, get to the cars! Move it!
[intense music playing]
Fuck you and your team, you dick.
[music trails off]
[birds cawing]
[vehicles accelerating]
[suspenseful music playing]
[music trails off]
[clock ticking]
[tense music playing]
[ringing]
- Who is it?
- Hello, ma'am, this is the front desk.
Go ahead.
The police just called.
They were asking about you,
and they're on their way over here.
I thought you should be aware,
just in case.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
Bambi? Baby, are you awake?
Yes, Mother?
They're coming for us.
[suspenseful music playing]
I'll get the bags, Mommy.
I'll check the exit.
[Bambi] Is it okay?
We can leave now.
We need to hurry though.
We'll be ready super-fast, Mom! We're out!
Listen, take a few guys
and check around out back.
- All right, go on.
- You guys, come with me.
- Good evening.
- What's their room?
- 103.
- Give me the key, quickly.
Master key, give him the master key.
[music intensifies]
This is the police! Get on the ground
and put your hands behind your heads!
On the ground!
[music trails off]
[officer] Clear!
Clear!
How the hell is it clear?
- Sir!
- Where the hell are they?
- Sir.
- Yeah?
[officer] The window.
Motherfucker.
You had one damned job.
Get everyone over here.
Cover every street. Look all over.
We're gonna conduct an area search, okay?
I don't get it. Did they fly out of here?
[officer] Sir, a taxi!
- Huh?
- Two people just took off in a taxi!
Why the hell are you staring? Move! Move!
- Get to the cars! Move it!
- [officer] Go, go, go!
We gotta cut off that taxi, let's go!
[indistinct clamoring]
[suspenseful music continues]
[man 1] There it is, sir, I see it.
Faster, faster, faster, hurry, sir!
[man 2] All units, the suspects' vehicle
is approaching the waterside junction.
Proceed moving north.
[man 1] Over to the left, sir!
We can cut 'em off over that way!
[frantic honking]
- [siren blaring]
- [captain] Pull over right now!
Pull over, immediately!
[man 3] Freeze!
[man 4] Stop there! Freeze!
Open the door!
Step out of the car!
Move aside. Move!
[music swells, fades away]
Where'd they go? Huh?
- Where the hell have they gone?
- [passenger 1] What's the deal?
Officer, what's wrong?
Nothing.
Where the hell are they? Huh?
What are you looking at?
Back to the hotel. Let's go! Move it!
- [man 3] Okay, folks, move along!
- Let's go!
Well, my guess is that the lady
knew they might have to run any time.
She knew you'd been trailing them
and could have them arrested.
They must have left
right after they had their dinner.
Yeah? How'd you figure that?
I've run security for a while.
Really.
I could tell even her daughter was aware
that things could get ugly.
Sounds like you could write
a novel on the subject.
What I can't wrap my head around
is how you missed their escape.
[tense music playing]
Or you knew about it.
Excuse me, sir?
Have you checked the security footage?
They're checking the traffic cam footage
from the hotel entrance now.
[captain grunts]
[door opens]
[door closes]
Go back half an hour.
- Anything?
- No, not yet.
What about the airports?
There's nothing
on their security footage, sir.
Goddamn it, this is insane!
What about the bus terminal?
I checked it twice, sir. There's nothing.
- There's one thing I can't figure out.
- Yeah?
Let's say they did flee
after they finished dinner.
Why can't we find them
on any traffic cam footage?
What if they didn't leave the hotel?
[foreboding music builds]
- We're ready, Mom.
- Let's go, Bambi.
Soon this will all be a distant memory
once we get to our island.
Then let's get to our island!
Stay put.
[dog barking]
Careful. Let's go.
[suspenseful music playing]
[mother] All good?
[Bambi] We're good.
Wait a second.
Bambi, baby.
Yes, what is it, Mommy?
If we go out, they will hunt us down
and we won't get away. I can smell it.
So, what should we do?
We're gonna try something.
It's a little risky.
The lobby. We'll wait there.
- In the lobby? But aren't
- Mm-hmm.
I know it sounds crazy to you.
But believe me,
that's the last place they will check.
And if they do?
Baby, Mommy can smell it.
On the streets they can corner us.
But the lobby's deserted,
which for us is the best thing.
How about we sit in there
and hide in the dark until it's daylight?
Then we'll get in a cab
that drops off guests at the hotel,
and then fly away.
What do you say, babe?
Hmm?
If you say so.
Fabulous. Now come on.
Follow me.
[captain] Take a few guys
and check out back.
[man] All right.
[woman] Good evening.
- What's their room number?
- 103.
- The key, quickly.
- Master key, give him the master key.
[Bambi] There are too many of them, Mommy.
- I'm scared.
- Shh.
Just lay down
and stay as quiet as you can. Shh.
Because they will notice
any noise right away.
And if we don't stay quiet,
they will hear us from a distance.
[siren wailing in distance]
What the hell are you saying? Seriously?
I don't care. We're searching
the entire hotel, everywhere!
I just said they might still be there.
What don't you get?
I'm on my way, I gotta go. Gotta go!
- [man on radio] I want every room checked.
- [captain] All right, guys.
Anyone with good news?
- No, nothing yet, Captain.
- Is that right?
- Is this the lobby?
- This way.
[captain] My God.
Where could they have been hiding?
- [woman] Captain?
- Captain.
Captain, you've gotta see this.
This footage is from two hours ago.
It's from the traffic cam on the street.
He was right. They were still here.
[captain] Wait, pause the tape there.
Captain, is she smiling?
She is.
She is, yeah.
Right at us.
Making a fool out of us.
[suspenseful music builds]
[tense outro music playing]
