Cypher (2021) s01e05 Episode Script

Second Death

(Whirring)
They found a substance
formerly referred to
as a "liquid X"
have been injected
to each of the victims' systems.
Fatal levels provoking
a heart attack
LARRY: That FBI agent,
she knows something.
Recently closed all
of her bank accounts
and opened one offshore account
last week.
- They can't
- Okay, well, dig deeper!
I can't do this anymore.
(Explosion)
I'm goin' in.
LEAH: I don't know if I loved him
or hated him.
I've just been feeling
kind of lost.
Welcome back, Will Scott.
ANNA:
Why did you do that?
(Anna sobbing)
You promised
you'd never leave me alone.
I love you, daddy.
If you want to be
daddy's girlfriend,
that's fine by me.
What's goin' on?
(♪♪♪)
How about we lighten the mood
a little?
What do you say
we put this case behind us
for one day,
go and grab a beer?
Thanks, but I have a date.
I mean I have plans.
Well, is it plans
or is it a date?
It's a date I guess.
What's wrong?
Nothing.
It's just well, everything
we've been going through
I find it a little surprising
you had time to meet someone.
I met him online.
Wait.
You're telling me
you're goin' on a blind date?
Every relationship
has its first day.
Relationship?
Wow.
Oh man, relax, André
We are just going for a drink.
Rees, you know, those sites
Those sites are full
of catfishers and
and bottom-of-the-barrel dudes.
Thanks, but I think
I can handle myself.
Of course, you can.
Alright.
What's the lucky guy's name?
That is none of your business.
Oh, come on, Rees.
You're no fun.
Alright.
His name is Antoine.
Oh, damn.
French lover?
Oh, he's got me beat already.
(Takes a deep breath)
What makes you say that?
You know what, Rees?
As charming as they may seem,
a lot of French
are big schemers.
What?
I mean it.
You can't trust 'em all.
Oh, okay.
Alright.
Thanks for the advice.
(André sighing)
No way.
(Rees sighing)
Rees, wait.
A good agent
always gives good advice.
Have fun on your date
and maybe be open to
Just give me a raincheck
on that drink, will you?
I'll think about it.
(♪♪♪)
(Whirring)
(♪♪♪)
(Whooshing)
(Knocking)
WILL:
It's me!
Open up!
MAN 1:
Who the hell is me?
You know who it is.
Can I come in?
MAN 1:
Will!
(Chuckling)
Man, you got some major balls
comin' over here.
WILL:
Would you let me in?
I need your help.
MAN 1: As I recall those
that helped you in the past
either got arrested or killed.
Now, you tell me
why I'd want to help the man
that got me arrested?
Can you just let me in?
I'm a fugitive
just like you now.
Yeah, I was a fugitive.
I did time, two years away
from my family.
Now, I'm clean as a whistle.
- WILL: James.
- What?
You don't have a family.
Yeah, you're right.
I appreciate the reminder.
WILL:
James.
What?
WILL:
You're my only hope.
(Door unlocking)
Come on in.
(Indistinct chatter)
Rees?
(Chuckling)
Um, Antoine.
(Antoine sighing)
I'm so sorry, I'm late.
(Sighing)
Pas de problème.
You speak French.
Uh, that was it.
(Chuckling)
(Speaking in French)
(Laughing)
(Whirring)
You're supposed to be dead.
WILL:
I am dead.
JAMES:
Yeah, right.
So what the hell you doin'
comin' around here anyway?
Well, I'm not here to bust you,
not this time.
Oh yeah, you mean not ever.
Never again.
Yeah, so sorry.
Yeah, the cleaning lady
canceled on me this week.
Last week, too.
I can see that.
Christmas three years ago,
you put me on the map.
Man, that is the last thing
a hacker wants for Christmas.
Like evil Santa Claus.
Can you just
(Sighing)
WILL: I'm takin' a big risk
comin' here,
so I need you to do
more listening than talkin'.
I need your help.
Yeah, you said that already.
So why don't you explain
to me this whole zombie fiasco?
They're tryin' to kill me.
Who?
What I'm gonna tell you
needs to stay a secret.
Now, can I trust you?
- Yeah, sure whatever.
- No, not whatever.
- It's a yes or no, it's
- Yes, yes, yes!
Don't get your panties in a wad.
What do you think
I'm gonna tell my friends
that I helped a federal agent?
(Scoffs)
They'll fucking castrate me
if I did that.
This is this is big,
this is Rothschild big.
Hmm.
Okay.
If you helped me,
when all this is done,
I will help you
clean your slate.
What do you say?
You know, I've hacked
the government for years,
even your illustrious FBI.
And you, the only one
smart enough to catch me.
I uh
(Takes a deep breath)
Respect you.
(Sighing)
So yeah, I'll do it.
Alright, what am I lookin' at?
WILL:
This list contains five names.
I need you to find out
if there's any possible link
between them.
You're gonna hack
their Facebook, Twitter,
all social media, bank accounts,
everything.
- Mmhmm.
- WILL: Alight.
It'll cost you 2 million.
James!
Okay, 200.
- WILL: Deal.
- Alright!
Let's get to it
and take a look at this.
Your name's on here.
Yeah.
I know.
ANTOINE: The best part about working
in Paris is that
you spend the entire morning
planning lunch
and then all afternoon
you eat lunch.
So you work uh half-time job?
ANTOINE:
Yeah, somethin' like that.
(Chuckling)
It sounds a whole lot better
than my job.
But aren't you an FBI agent?
I mean that's gonna be excitin'.
Well, if chasing
bad guys around every day
seems cool to you,
then yeah,
I guess you could say that.
But you know, it
it sounds a lot more exciting
than it really is.
When we first started chatting,
you told me that you worked
for the government
(Clears throat)
ANTOINE: And I won't lie uh,
it's a little intimidating.
And after you said
that I had kept second-guessing
my choice of words
you know,
I wanted to make sure
that I came across
as respectable.
(Chuckling)
So don't change.
Cheers to that.
You know, I was expecting you
to be in your uniform
and instead I land on
an attractive,
irresistible young girl.
You're being too kind.
MAN 2: Would you both like
another drink?
Yes,
we'll both have another one.
I'm I'm good.
Thank you.
I was here way
before you got here.
You were late, remember?
Yeah.
Come on, just one more drink.
I'll drive.
(Chuckling)
No, but okay, we'll see,
alright?
Um, so
ANTOINE:
Hmm.
Tell me about yourself?
What's the most exciting thing
that's happened to you
in the past I don't know week
or so?
Come on, don't be shy.
I've been blabbing on.
Your turn.
The most exciting thing
in a long time.
Tell me.
Bein' on a first date
in a long time
with a beautiful woman.
(Indistinct chatter
in background)
What's the long time?
ANTOINE:
Long enough.
How come a good-looking guy
like yourself
hasn't scored
in such a long time?
Time.
Time and and trust.
I'm sorry.
I'm not.
Again,
I'm very sorry for your loss.
As you know, it's protocol
for family members
to identify recent
accident victims,
but you have the right
to refuse this if you wish.
(Sighs)
No, let's let's move forward.
Are you sure?
Yes.
Yes.
Doctor, please.
(♪♪♪)
Can you confirm this is
your wife Scarlett Watkins?
That's her.
Please.
(Sighing)
A moment.
Of course.
Uh, gentlemen.
Okay.
(Sobbing)
In your simple sweeps things
to keep in mind,
there are elements
they're gonna help us
during a raid like uh,
local law enforcement.
You all review your notes,
I'll be back.
You're late.
The polite thing to say
would be "hello".
Hello.
How was it?
What?
Your date, Rees.
How was your date?
It was nice.
He was quite the charmer.
So you're into it.
(Chuckles)
Unbelievable.
Well, considering
the current circumstances,
it was nice to be with someone
who's actually interested
in what I do.
I need that.
Yeah.
Get it.
Um, Robert's
interrogating Scarlet's husband,
so he should be ready for you
in 20 minutes.
Okay.
(♪♪♪)
But a heart attack,
we all thought that was strange.
She was healthiest person
in our family.
I'm sorry for your loss,
you know?
(Sighing)
She didn't mention
or do anything strange
or out of the ordinary last week
you can remember?
No.
She didn't mention
any financial decisions to you,
'cause it looks like she's got
a significant sum deposited
in her account just last week.
No, not really.
It appears she had
a significant sum deposited
into her checking account
just the week before she died.
I know nothin' about that.
But you do know why
she transferred $10,000 to you
the day before she died?
I can explain that.
She lent me the money,
so I can get back
into my kids' lives,
because I was so far behind
on their support.
(Sighing)
(Sobbing)
And now she's gone.
(Sobbing)
(♪♪♪)
What, you found somethin'?
No.
Aside from the fact
that you're the only man living
from amongst those five names.
Well, now you know why I'm here?
You know what the dark web is,
Will?
You know, I think so.
Okay, so people send money,
and guns,
and all kinds of secret shit,
and no one knows who sent it
or where it came from.
So far
None of your dead buddies
are anywhere to be found.
What are you tangled up in,
Will?
Uh, dance for me, baby.
(Typing)
- (Beeping)
- Alright, there she goes.
This mean anything to you?
Warp.
No.
Uh, it should.
Check your bank account.
(Typing)
As far as I can tell,
each of these five names
received a bank transfer
of 50 grand in the week
leading up to their death,
all from this company
named "Warp".
Transfers all came
from the same account,
but I can't trace
anything back to it.
Beer?
Yeah, beer.
I can think of two things here.
Either Warp is the most advanced
security system in America
or it never existed
in the first place.
(Bottle cap pops)
(Cap clinking)
JAMES: Looks like you received
the transfer
about four months ago
from the same company
or organization or whatever.
Yeah.
I remember.
JAMES:
Bingo!
You find the guy
that initiated the transfer
and you've already got
your culprit,
and you should go kick his ass.
(Flicking)
It doesn't matter anymore.
He's dead.
Hmm.
Who was he?
My best friend.
None of my friends
ever wired me $50,000.
Now, that it's true friendship.
(Traffic whirring)
You wanted to see me, sir?
I need you to deliver
this envelope discreetly.
Where to?
Here's the address.
Make sure no one sees you.
I'll let you know
when it's done.
After I left the FBI,
my friend Kurt
called me in for a freelance job
for an anonymous company.
Upon completion they did
a $50,000 wire transfer
into my account.
JAMES:
Regarding payments,
you seem to be making quite
a fortune.
I'd like to uh, renegotiate
our little
$200 I-took-pity-on-you deal.
We'll renegotiate upon
completion of the job?
What, more work?
What more do you need?
Exactly what you just did
to Kurt's account.
Facebook, Twitter,
accounts everything!
Stop, stop, stop.
I know how to do my job.
Thank you.
WILL:
And Kurt's family name is
Siebel.
(Typing)
What's that?
WILL:
I gotta go.
Keep in touch.
Get out of here.
We still don't have any answers
on why she died,
who wanted her dead.
Of course,
we've interviewed
each one
of the victims' families.
Jimmy Anderson, John Robin,
Philip Washington,
and Scarlet Watkins.
Now, each one of our victims
thought they died
of a simple heart attack
when in fact we had
to inform their families
that they did not die
of natural causes
but their death was
a part of a series
of planned murders.
So they learned something based
on our intel
and in return we get nothing.
Great.
(Knocking)
ROBERT:
Come.
Am I interrupting?
ROBERT: Uh, not at all,
Ronnie, come on in.
Everybody,
please welcome Ronnie.
Hi, everyone.
Uh, Ronnie's done a lot
of work overseas
and he's our new cryptanalyst,
so any questions we have
going forward
regarding that case,
direct them at Ronnie.
Please, Ronnie, take it away.
Well, uh, let me start off
by saying
that this is the most complex
and intricately-designed code
I've ever seen.
So it's uh, really a privilege
to be able
to work with your team
to try to crack it.
I'm really quite excited.
Robert told you
this was a hit list, right?
Precisely.
Oh yes, a hit list, which is why
time is of the essence.
Well, I'll continue.
Um, I can already tell
that the document here
contains a few various types
of codes,
for example, this range here
appears to be a Caesar shift
for certain symbols,
as well as transpositional
for others.
That's why
it's so extraordinary.
There are just so many layers
to see through
and options to try.
You did say
time was of the essence.
And it is.
But regardless of speed,
this will take some
careful attention to decipher.
Most code breakers are trained
in one or two specialities.
You're saying you can't do it.
Well,
I'm saying it'll take longer
and there are bound
to be mistakes.
Every mistake
risks someone's life.
- I'm aware.
- Good.
Then tell me something useful.
What what I think my partner
is trying to say is
what progress have you made
thus far, Ronnie.
Well,
I think I'm making progress
on deciphering these
first few letters
on the next line.
REES:
So you think.
Do you have any names?
Not yet.
Better get on it.
Ronnie.
Please sit down.
Everybody's a little tense
over this case.
What the hell was that?
That guy's a joke.
That guy's all we got.
Besides you can't jump
down his throat
before he's had a chance
to look at the list.
We don't have any time, André.
Will Scott's all we got.
He cracked the first few lines
in what?
Two days?
The sooner we locate him,
the sooner we can get him
to decipher it.
Will Scott is on the run,
and even if we do catch him,
there's no guaranteein'
that he will voluntarily help us
decipher the list.
Ronnie.
(Indistinct chatter)
(♪♪♪)
- ANNA: I missed you, daddy.
- Anna.
I missed you, too.
(Sighing)
ANNA:
Smile.
Oh yeah.
What's the matter?
Well, what
don't worry about it.
Daddy,
the police are looking for you.
Yeah.
Did you do something bad?
No, not really.
They ask you questions?
Many.
WILL:
Yeah.
Okay, what'd you tell 'em?
Nothing.
Just like I promised.
We had a deal, remember?
Yeah.
What about mom?
She knows you're alive.
I prefer to have done this
in better conditions,
but happy birthday.
- (Chuckling)
- I love it.
Thanks, dad.
Okay, I guess
you better get back before uh,
police notices you're missing,
but you put him in here, okay?
Let me get you there.
Keep him hidden.
(♪♪♪)
Go, go, go, go.
(Sighing)
Robert mentioned
one of the victims, Scarlet,
had received
a rather generous sum of money
from an unknown offshore account
via wire transfer.
And luckily,
I was able to do some digging
and access all three
of the victims' bank accounts.
Now, here's where it gets
really interesting.
Each one of the victims
received a wire transfer
of the same sum
from the same exact company.
What's the name of that company?
RONNIE:
Warp.
REES: Do we have an address
for this Warp?
Negative.
My gut feeling is
that the company
never actually existed
or else I would have found
traces of something.
That or they're really good
at their job.
If they never existed,
then how could they open up
a bank account?
Great question.
What I noticed when I was
tracing the accounts was
that each of the wire transfers
came from a different country
outside of the US.
Singapore, Canada, Switzerland.
Sounds like these Warp guys
really knew
what they were doing.
W-A-R-P,
undeniably an abbreviation
for something.
Do you have any idea
what that could stand for?
That's an interesting idea,
but here's what's
even more interesting.
During my research, I discovered
that an untraceable source
had accessed each
of the victims' accounts
just hours before I did.
Someone's one step ahead of us.
I think we all know
who that someone is.
(♪♪♪)
(Traffic whooshing)
(♪♪♪)
Hey, I tried calling you
and you wouldn't pick up.
(Taking deep breaths)
Sorry.
What's wrong?
Nothin', I just
I need to be alone.
Will, talk to me.
(Sighs)
Doesn't matter.
It's over.
Okay, you need to talk to me.
We're a team,
you've gotta know that.
Can you just leave me alone,
please?
Sorry.
(♪♪♪)
I'm next.
What?
(♪♪♪)
WILL:
That's me, two weeks from now.
(♪♪♪)
Are you sure
you didn't make a mistake?
WILL:
I'm sure.
CLAIRE:
Hey.
We're gonna figure this out.
I'm not gonna let those bastards
take someone else,
especially not the person
that I care about most.
Look at me, hey.
You're gonna be fine.
I promise.
Hey, you still have two weeks
to try and figure out
how to stop them.
WILL:
(Indistinct speech)
I don't know what to do.
Don't give up.
You're stronger than that.
Come on.
Come on.
(♪♪♪)
(Whirring)
Hey.
Hey.
Looking good, Rees.
Thank you.
You need a ride?
Uh, thanks,
but I don't wanna impose.
You're not imposing.
You wouldn't be.
You're on my way home.
Actually, I'm not going home.
Got it.
Well, enjoy your night, Rees.
You, too.
(Whirring)
(♪♪♪)
Alright.
(Speaking in French)
Hmm.
I have no idea what that means,
but sounds beautiful.
Not nearly as beautiful as you.
This has to be the first time
I've relaxed in weeks.
Work stress?
REES:
Beyond stressed.
MAN 3:
(Indiscernible speech)
Right over here.
Thank you.
I uh
took the liberty of ordering
without asking.
You seemed so stressed
I figured that we would
reverse your mindset
and have a little ice cream
for dessert.
- That's fine.
- ANTOINE: Mmhmm.
That's fine.
I never say no to ice cream.
- Good.
- Mmhmm?
Mmhmm.
Mmm.
You get it, right?
Stressed spelled backwards
you get
Dessert.
Yeah, ha-ha.
Ooh, God,
it has to be your first fail.
ANTOINE:
What, fail?
Yeah, total fail.
Alright.
Okay, well, let me uh,
let me try another one.
Yeah, you do that.
Look, I probably should've
got you more drunk
but alright, how about this?
Love is like an ice cream sundae
with all the fabulous
wonderful toppings.
And sex
(Smacking)
Is the cherry on top.
(♪♪♪)
(Traffic whooshing)
I had a feeling
you were an honest man.
Honesty can be
a very dangerous thing.
A great deal of it can be fatal.
Oscar Wilde.
Who's that?
He was a writer.
Dead.
We all got to die someday.
So might as well be
a honest man.
It's the honorable way to go.
Well, that's why I'm here.
(Rustling)
$1.
Thank you.
(Grunting)
Do not get cold?
Get used it.
Well, thanks again.
We're all in the gutter.
Some of us are lookin'
at the stars.
Oscar Wilde.
Take care.
Hi, I take it
you're a morning person.
Yeah, you too.
Have a good day.
(Rees taking a deep breath)
Alright, I'll see you soon.
(♪♪♪)
(James sighing)
(Bottle rattles)
(Phone buzzing)
Hello?
Will, your friend Kurt,
I have evidence he was working
for the company.
Warp?
Now,
Warp's no not a company name.
It's just a password they used
for money transfers
and other shit.
I tried using it
to crack Kurt's account.
Guess what?
It worked like a pack mule.
I'm gonna have to call you back.
(Busy dial tone)
(Tap running)
(♪♪♪)
(Phone buzzing)
(♪♪♪)
(♪♪♪)
