Duets (2012) s01e05 Episode Script
Movie Night
1 Last week on "Duets" I've never had to stand in front of anybody and do this to save my career.
I have.
It's hard.
Singing for her life, this is meleana brown.
I'm saving all my love One more amateur was lost.
This is what I'm meant to do.
I'm meant to sing.
I'm gonna do that no matter what.
Two, three.
I love rock n' roll But the Duets keep rocking on.
Take your time and dance with me all night long J.
Rome sitting at the top of the chart with Jennifer nettles for a fourth straight week.
I'll take you there This show is just the stepping-stone for you to start your career, without question.
Bridget and John legend were like a bullet straight up the chart into the number two spot.
Come on, baby dance that dance But it was Robin thicke that had to face the music.
I'm swimming in a barrel of emotion right now.
With only one amateur left in the competition, Robin knew Olivia wouldn't let him down.
Happy or sad Any kind of hesitancy, you're gonna sound pitchy.
Olivia had to sing for her life, but she escaped elimination, as did Jason farol, who was not in the bottom two for the first time.
Satisfaction Tonight What's love "Duets" goes to the movies.
And I wish you joy And for the final time tonight, the bottom two amateurs on the chart will sing for their lives in a solo showdown.
When the music stops, one is going home for good.
Then next week, we go live with the final five, and you get to vote on who will stay and who will go.
Your little fingers are gonna be on fire trying to vote.
Right now on "Duets" Captioned by closed captioning services, inc.
Thank you, everybody.
Welcome to "Duets.
" Tonight, it's about to go down, because we've got some incredible performances lined up for you.
Our amateurs are gonna be going big or going home as they take on some of the most legendary movie songs of all time alongside their superstars.
That's right.
They're taking the big stage with songs from the big screen.
And there's huge stakes for our amateurs this week, because if they make it past tonight, next week we go live, and, America, you'll decide who stays and who goes.
But before the action gets underway, let's hear it for our superstars John legend That right there's Kelly clarkson Robin thicke And of course, Jennifer nettles.
Thank you.
Soon they'll be joining our amateurs right up here on the "Duets" stage with more pressure than ever before, because at the end of tonight's show, one of our amateurs will be sent home, and we'll be left with our top five, ladies and gentlemen.
Very exciting.
Jennifer, both of your amateurs have managed to stay out of the bottom two each and every week.
It's no small feat.
How do you manage to do it? I am lucky that they are just so talented, and we have fun up there on stage.
It's a joy every time we step up there, and I think that that translates.
I don't know that there's any sort of magic formula.
It's just they're super talented and and I really think that shines through.
And you're pretty good, too.
Just saying.
Well, as they say I don't know, at this point, as they say in Nashville, I just hold the flashlight, let them get out there and do it.
Well, Jennifer and her first duet partner John glosson are not playing it safe this week.
They are taking a song from one of the biggest movies of all time.
First things first, let's talk about last week.
You were getting into it, out in the audience, which I loved.
Yeah, exactly, and Robin didn't like it.
Yes.
Yes.
Well, you know what? I don't care.
You know what? Yeah.
That's a matter of taste.
Taste-wise and aesthetic-wise, John doesn't necessarily speak to, I think, specifically one of the judges.
Life is a highway I want to ride it all night long I honestly feel like your voice is so good you just don't have to try as hard physically.
I-I would just love to just He ain't tryin'.
He's doin'.
Well, see, we're gonna capture America's heart this week.
That's right.
That's right.
The theme of this week is movie week, and Jennifer and I are singing "my heart will go on" from "Titanic.
" Near far wherever you are I don't know what it will take to get John to the top of the chart, but that's okay.
He doesn't have to be number one on the chart.
Just has to get to where America votes, then all bets are off for everybody anyway.
We've been doing sort of that gospel ending, and it's so useful.
Right.
Right.
But we've done it so much.
But we've done it.
You know, there's one version that at the end I will go on and on We're not trying to recreate the movie here.
We're trying to capture the emotional integrity of the song.
I'll never let go.
I'll never let go.
My game plan this week is to do what I've been asked to do Just to really sing, show my voice.
I hold to So you're gonna hear it.
love can touch us one time Is there something you can do there melodically that would show a little bit of more play in your voice? Yeah, I mean, I can work on that, yeah, for sure.
For Robin this week, we're gonna have a very special interpretation of this song, because we know how much he likes the fromage.
Robin, this one's for you.
Since you didn't like my dancing, I thought I'd show you my other talent, the flute.
And then Then my flute's gonna turn into a Baton.
Yes.
Yes! Yes.
And then you sing it to me.
I'll be like Yeah.
Robin, take that, why don't you? How's that? How do you like them apples? Exactly.
Oh, my gosh.
This Celine Dion megahit from "Titanic" is one of the biggest songs in movie history, selling 15 million copies.
With "my heart will go on," here is Jennifer nettles and her duet partner John glosson.
every night in my dreams I see you I feel you that is how I know you go on far across the distance and spaces between us you have come to show you go on near far wherever you are you are here in my heart and my heart will go on and on Love can touch just one time and last for a lifetime and never let go till we're gone love was when I loved you one true time I hold to in my life we'll always go on you're here there's nothing I fear and I know that my heart will go on we'll stay forever this way you are safe in my heart and my heart will go on and on yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah ooh ooh Go, John! Whoo! Okay.
You saw you got a standing ovation in here, right? Yes.
Yes.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So were you picturing yourself on the bow of that "Titanic" Yeah, right yes.
With Kate winslet by your side or what? Exactly, yeah.
Man, you took us there.
I just was imagining, like, smoke and fog and all that, but it'll come.
You had Jennifer nettles next to you.
Right? Exactly.
So let me ask you because that is one of the biggest songs of all time.
Just a little bit of pressure? Just a little bit.
And Celine's one of my favorite people in the whole world, you know, it's like, whoo! I think you did her proud.
Made her proud.
Let's check in with our superstars and see what they thought.
Kelly.
Uh, well, I mean, Celine does such a great job, obviously, with it, but I think what's cool about y'all picking this song is that you're a man and you're gonna sound completely different, and I think that was really key.
Your partner was just singing the most high stratosphere, you know, so I just think we should just give it up for Jennifer.
Takes one to know one.
That was amazing.
And, um, just sitting down here, I was like, whoo! Um, and two, I mean, y'all complement each other so well.
I have nothing left to say positive about you, 'cause I like you so much.
So you just make I can't stand you.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Robin, last week you were kind of distracted by his dance moves.
This week yes.
Is this the performance you wanted to see from him? You know what? The the the thing about About John is that he, uh, he sings He sings from his heart, he sings with passion, he's got a beautiful voice, and that song right there Uh, it looked like y'all had been singing together for ten years.
I mean, it was I mean, honestly, it was And, uh, you know, I wish I wish I could think of anything negative to say.
The the crowd all You got a standing ovation.
I-I mean I-I-I, uh, I couldn't help but stand up at the end myself, John.
It was really that special.
It was a wonderful, wonderful performance.
Thank you.
Thank you, Robin.
Right.
John, what are you thinking? Well, that was really, really beautiful.
Your voice sounds gorgeous up there, you know.
Uh, I think it it was just I don't know what to say.
You guys sound great together.
Yeah.
It really was fabulous.
Thank you.
Thank you.
You basically made John legend speechless.
That's gotta feel pretty good.
Well, here's a quick reminder of how the scoring works.
The three superstars who didn't just perform have now entered a secret score on their "Duets" tablet between 1 and 100, based upon performance and presentation.
After each amateur performs, we'll add those up and reveal where they stand on our chart.
The better your singing, the better your standing.
John, you kicked off the show, so clearly, you're holding the top spot.
Whoo-hoo! Here it comes.
It still feels good.
So we'll see if your performance is good enough to hold up through the show Thank you.
And keep you out of the bottom two.
Sound good? All right.
Go ahead and join her in the lounge.
Kelly clarkson and Jordan Meredith take on the academy award-winning "top gun" classic "take my breath away," and five more amateurs gear up to take the stage.
Do not go anywhere.
You are watching "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets," where our amateurs are going all out with some of the most legendary movie songs of all time.
And next week, we are back on our original night and time on Thursday at 8:00/7:00 central, and we go live.
And you, America, will decide who stays and who goes, but up next, it's Jordan Meredith's turn.
And last week, Jordan admitted that the nerves got the best of her.
So let's find out if she was able to settle in during this week's rehearsal with Kelly clarkson.
Are you nervous? I'm very nervous.
I've been a fan of Kelly's, too, and I am nervous.
My parents traveled all the way from Wisconsin to see me.
They are definitely in a state of shock.
Oh! Hey, Kelly.
I'm excited to meet you.
I walked in.
I was like, I was wondering what her parents would look like.
Hi.
How are you doing? It was cool to meet Jordan's parents.
It was nice to kinda see where she came from.
Did you ever tell Kelly the story about the first concert you went to of hers? No.
Like, we're standing there and she's like, "oh, did you ever tell Kelly about this?" I'm like, really? When you first, like, got on the stage, like, I was so overwhelmed, I was so excited to see you, I thought I was gonna cry.
Jordan's been a fan of Kelly's since the "idol" days.
She would ride in the car with me.
They'd all be singing Kelly's songs out the windows.
"Since u been away" was a very popular song in the truck.
"Since u been gone"? "Since u been gone.
" My bad.
I know.
Mm-hmm.
Do y'all want to sit down and hang out while we rehearse? Love to.
Love to.
Thank you.
All right.
I'm gonna make you nervous about it.
That'll be awesome.
Oh, gosh.
I know.
This week, with Jordan, we are doing a song that she picked, and it's called "take my breath away.
" Watching every motion in this foolish lover's game Sing it! Oh.
It's weird to sing in front of my parents, 'cause I know when I start singing in front of my mom, she stops everything and stares at me and listens, and it's weird.
I am unafraid Seeing our daughter out there performing with Kelly clarkson is a top-of-the-Mountain feeling.
You're making it very Bonnie Raitt, which is cool.
Who's that? What?! I brought up Bonnie Raitt today, and she didn't know who that was.
I am so old right now.
Oh, God.
I feel I feel broken.
This is that moment.
This is that moment where I get dated, and I'm like, what? You don't know Bonnie Raitt? Take my breath away I think Jordan's gonna floor people with this ballad.
This is the best she's ever sounded.
You know, we've done the fun songs like.
"I love rock n' roll," "mama's broken heart," and "stronger," but we we haven't ac-actually slowed it down and, like, gotten real.
I love these shame, game, and How you end is so captivating.
I'm really excited about this performance 'cause I think the song is really cool.
So hopefully, the superstars will give me good scores.
You guys did good.
Thank you so much.
That was awesome.
We're so proud of you.
Jordan's confidence has grown leaps and bounds.
She went from this little girl that was afraid to get into a plane to "hey, I can do this.
" Lovely to meet y'all.
It can change your life.
What more could you want? It's awesome.
I love your parents.
I love you.
All right.
Love you.
Love you, too.
Performing "take my breath away" from the number one movie of 1986 "top gun," here is Kelly clarkson and her first duet partner Jordan Meredith.
Watching every motion in my foolish lover's game on this endless ocean finally lovers know no shame turning every turn into some secret place inside watching in slow motion as you turn around and say take my breath away take my breath away through the hourglass I saw you in time you slipped away when the mirror crashed, I called you and turned to hear you say if only for today I am unafraid take my breath away yeah watching every motion in this foolish lover's game haunted by the notion somewhere there's a love in flames turning every turn into some secret place inside watching in slow motion as you turn around and say my love take my breath away take my breath away take my breath away Ah.
Thank you.
I was having flashbacks of Maverick and goose during that performance.
How'd you think you did? Uh, good.
It was fun.
Felt good? Yeah, it was one of my favorite songs.
What's it like having Kelly clarkson as a wingwoman? I'm your Maverick.
That's awesome.
Or goose.
That was goose, wasn't it? Goose.
All right.
Yeah, it was fun.
It's good.
You're just having a blast now, huh? Yeah, I am.
No nerves at all? Oh, a little bit.
Yeah, it doesn't escape you.
Yeah, they're still there.
All right.
Well, it's time to hear from our superstars now and see what they thought.
Robin, what'd you think? Once you came a couple weeks ago and gave me all that sultry sexiness, you know, I-I-I guess I have expectations for her to always bring that that sexiness.
She has a lovely voice, and and I felt like, um, on this song, you know, the only thing I was missing was those couple moments when you actually felt like you had your breath taken away, like you had met the man of your dreams and you had finally fallen in love and he had changed your whole life, and I was just missing that in your eyes.
The voice, I was feeling it, but I felt like maybe sometimes, you know, to just dig a little deeper physically to make sure that you're actually emoting as much as you are with your voice in your physicality.
That would be my only thing.
Sorry.
Sorry.
Hey.
It's all right.
Let me ask you have you fallen in love at this point in your life? Do you have a reference point for what that feels like? Uh, yeah, actually.
Okay.
Yeah! That's what That's what he wanted That's what he wanted to see right there.
Some people are quiet about it.
Some people are more of a shy kind of, you know, internal True.
Which can be awesome.
All right.
Jennifer? I thought it was great.
I love what you did to make the song yours.
I really felt like some of the I heard On this endless oc notion Whatever.
I don't know the words.
But, you know, like, there was some some phrases that you did, some phrasing that you did that I thought was really cool and actually gave it a country spin.
I know you're a super big country fan and I could feel that in your performance, and yet you also have that powerhouse voice that can come behind it.
I heard a couple of pitchy things here or there, but on the whole, you seem to really be the most comfortable in your skin that I think I've seen you in a while, so I thought it was great.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Mr.
legend? Yeah! One, I thought it was really beautifully arranged.
I love how your voices sound together when you're doing some of those verses together.
It really sounded great.
Uh, your voices sound super nice together.
It just feels good.
Yeah! Yeah! My o my only issue was right at the beginning.
I felt like you were a little nervous at the beginning and didn't didn't come in strong at the very top, but after that, it felt really good.
Thank you.
Well, they say it's how you finish, right? Yeah.
So good stuff.
Jordan, let's reveal your position on the chart.
Okay.
Behind John.
Oh.
But still, a great performance.
Thank you.
You can head down to the lounge.
Robin thicke and Olivia chisholm go disco with some "Saturday night fever," taking us back to the '70s with the bee gees' "stayin' alive.
" Will Olivia have what it takes to stay out of the bottom two this week? Find out.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets.
" Now before the break, Jordan Meredith performed and moved into the number two spot on the chart.
And remember, at the end of the night, our bottom two amateurs will square off in a solo showdown, and one will be sent home.
Up next is Robin thicke and his duet partner Olivia chisholm's turn.
And after falling into the bottom two last week and surviving our solo showdown, let's see how Olivia and Robin plan to turn things around this week.
Hey, baby.
Robin, hi.
How you doing? Good.
So, uh, okay, obviously, last week, when you did the, uh, elimination round, you were really strong.
I was very proud of Olivia.
You know, she ended up down near the bottom, and then she had to fight for her life in the showdown.
'Cause I can't make you love me She sang with passion.
She sang with feeling.
She really showed her heart and soul on that song.
How did you feel about last week? I'm gonna try not to be in the bottom again.
Yeah, I know.
We'll be doing our best.
I don't want that.
I don't like that feeling.
Yeah.
Who does? Who does? But I did I really enjoyed the performance and Yeah.
Regardless of what the superstars said, I feel as though I did my job.
Yeah.
You were more connected and you weren't as nervous.
The other superstars might have not agreed, but last week I felt as if it was the first time I was truly confident onstage with Robin.
Let's stay together together I think I think for you right now, you're growing exponentially every week and so quickly Mm-hmm.
That as long as you keep developing, keep trying yeah.
For Olivia, this show is an opportunity for her to learn.
She could end up in the bottom every week and fight for her life every week.
As long as she keeps fighting, that's all that matters to me.
So I was very proud of you that you stayed alive, so this week we're gonna do "stayin' alive.
" Okay.
Stayin' alive 'Cause it's movie week and, um, you know, obviously, it fits our story.
It does.
It is a very symbolic song for where I'm at right now.
It's all about not giving up so I just have to not give up.
Sing that.
How does that go? Got the wings of heaven wings wings Yeah, when you hit that second verse, you try to sing it like Like aretha or something.
You know what I mean? Okay.
One, two, three.
Got the wings of heaven on my shoes and I'm dancin' girl and I just can't lose Whoo! Come on now! you know, it's all right it's okay there you go.
I live to see another day I have to nail that solo moment, because this week, I do not want to end up at the bottom of the charts again.
Stayin' alive Whoo! Cool.
Singing the bee gees' "stayin' alive" from "Saturday night fever," here's Robin thicke and his duet partner Olivia chisholm.
well, you can tell by the way I use my walk I'm a woman's man, no time to talk music's loud and the women warm I've been kicked around since I was born now it's all right, it's okay you can look the other way we can try to understand the "New York times" effect on man whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother you're stayin' alive, stayin' alive feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin' no, we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive ah, ah, ah, ah stayin' alive, stayin' alive ah, ah, ah, ah stayin' alive Ow! well, now I get low and I get high and when I can't get either, I really try got the wings of truth on my feet I'm a dancin' girl and I just can't lose it's all right, it's okay we can look another way we can live another day we can try to understand the "New York times" effect on man whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother you're stayin' alive, stayin' alive feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin' and we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive ah, ah, ah, ah stayin' alive, stayin' alive ah, ah, ah, ah stayin' alive Ow! Life's going nowhere somebody help me, yeah somebody help me, yeah, yeah life's going nowhere somebody help me, yeah I'm stayin' alive whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother you're stayin' alive said I'm stayin' alive feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin' oh, yeah I'm stayin' alive, stayin' alive gotta stay alive ah, ah, ah, ah all right stayin' alive, stayin' alive don't give up on me, baby ah, ah, ah, ah gotta keep on tryin' stayin' alive Ow! "Ow!" Is right! Okay.
Did you do anything differently this week to try to step up? Just tried to have more attitude and sing out That worked.
Instead of holding back.
Yeah.
That was some of the feedback that you got from John.
Yeah.
Do you think that she satisfied your note? Yes, I-I really felt more power from her tonight.
Uh, and I also felt the performance aspect, the, uh, ancing and everything Y'all looked really good up there together.
Thank you.
It was nice.
Yeah.
Kelly, did you think she stepped up? This is my favorite that you've done so far.
I just loved how comfortable you were, and I think it's that thing in the back of your head, which my two have had as well, like, that thing in the back of the head, like, I don't want to go home and I've been close to going home Mm-hmm.
And I think that that's really fueled the fire in you and I-I love it.
That's my favorite of you.
Thank yo thank you.
Now, Jennifer, your group sugarland actually did a cover of "stayin' alive.
" We did a little cover of "stayin' alive.
" How did you think she did with it? Yeah.
I thought she did great.
First of all, I love this song choice.
I love the more upbeat stuff for your voice as well because clearly, you're e where you can sing the smooth stuff, but to me, I think this is super fun and really showcases a different part of your voice.
Obviously, energetically, you really brought it to this song.
It was super sexy and it seemed like you were having a real fun time.
But I thought vocally for you, to me, it was one of my favorite performances Thank you.
Just because it's so fun and energetic.
Thank you.
Congratulations.
Now let's see what scores they locked in for you.
Ok.
Let's find out where yore at.
All right.
So technically, you're still in jeopardy in the bottom two, but there's still a lot of show to go.
We'll see how it plays out.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Head on over there.
Up next we got John legend and bridget carrington's turn to take the stage.
With Tina Turner's "what's love got to do with it.
" And later, Jennifer and J.
Rome perform the biggest Whitney Houston song of all time.
Don't go anywhere.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
Before the break, Olivia performed and moved into the number two position, which means John glosson is definitely safe tonight, and he will be moving on officially to next week's live show.
Jordan and Olivia are sitting in the bottom two and in danger of going home tonight.
But up next, John legend's turn, and he's down to one partner after bridget found herself just below J.
Rome at the number two spot on the chart last week.
Let's take a look at how she plans to move ahead to number one.
Hello.
Hey, bridget.
How are you? How you doing? Good.
Another good show this week.
Another one.
Another one.
Another one.
That's your highest rank so far number two.
Oh I think bridget's delivering really powerful vocal performances, but we're aiming for number one every week, so if we're not number one, then, uh, we have, uh, some work to do.
Obviously, we lost meleana to our team.
I'm still a little surprised and shaken by that, but, you know That just means I focus all my attention on you now.
I felt like I let meleana down last week if I couldn't figure out a way to keep her going in the show.
And I don't want to let bridget down like that either.
What's love got to do got to do with it We picked this song because I love the angst in it.
It's a song about a woman who's trying to figure out whether or not she can fall in love again.
What's your romantic situation right now, bridget? Oh.
Bridget's separated right now.
Oh, so you're married? Yeah.
This song is talking about a woman that has been hurt in love.
Yeah, she just don't wanna be hurt again, so she's just adamant about it.
No.
No.
But then every time somebody says that, they end up falling in love.
Right.
I can relate to that story because I'm separated.
Um, so, you know, it kinda hits home.
Gets some high notes in.
What's love So we're gonna put some emotion in it and we're gonna drive it up to number one, hopefully, this this week.
You think this song's strong enough? Oh, yeah.
Okay.
It's gonna be good.
But that is what I told meleana last week, too, so You never know.
Performing Tina Turner's grammy hall of fame classic and one of my personal favorites, "what's love got to do with it," here's John legend and his duet partner bridget carrington.
You must understand the touch of your hand makes my pulse react but it's only the thrill of boy meeting girl opposites attract it's physical only logical you must try to ignore that it means more than that oh, oh, oh what's love got to do, got to do with it what's love but a secondhand emotion? what's love got to do, got to do with it who needs a heart when a heart can be broken? it may seem to you that I'm acting confused when you're close to me ooh if I tend to look dazed I've read it someplace I've got cause to be there's a name for it oh there's a place that fits but whatever the reason you do it for me oh, oh, oh, what's love got to do got to do with it what's love but a secondhand emotion? what's love got to do, got to do with it who needs a heart when a heart can be broken? ooh ooh, ooh I've been thinking 'bout new direction but I have to say I've been thinking about my own protection it scares me to feel this way oh, oh, oh what's love got to do, got to do with it what's love but a secondhand emotion? what's love got to do, got to do with it who needs a heart when a heart can be broken? got to do, got to do with it what's love but a sweet, old-fashioned notion? what's love got to do, got to do with it who needs a heart when a heart can be broken? Yes! Whoo! I love that song, and you sung it well.
Thank you.
So let's talk about this dress first and foremost, because I feel like you're really pulling off the Tina Turner look.
Yeah! Yes! So let's talk about that.
Did you feel like you pulled off Tina Turner? I think I, you know, did her some justice.
I think she'd be proud.
All right.
All right.
Well, Kelly, I know you made a point of saying you wanted her to really connect more with the audience I and not so much with John.
I think no.
No.
I think b I mean, I love John, and I don't I don't know.
What? He was, like, wailing on that.
I didn't I didn't know you could do that.
I never heard you sing like that, so that was awesome.
Um, but, no, I love that.
She came out.
She was the little Tina Turner dress.
That's perfect.
And and especially your legs, honey.
Those are nice, too.
So and then, oh, my gosh.
I just I will be honest with you.
I wasn't the the this song it's not either one of your performances that song just doesn't really go anywhere for me.
Like, if you're if I'm thinking of all the performances I've seen as in, like, going somewhere big I just feel like it's kind of linear, the melody, and I didn't I didn't feel like it, you know, it was a very hard song to sing, but, like, especially for you, 'cause I've heard you sing on this show, but other than that, I loved it.
I was very entertained.
Jennifer.
I'm gonna give you a yes, ma'am, because I gotta tell you, I'm gonna give you the highest compliment that I think I-I could give on this show, and that is that I was watching it and I forgot that I was supposed to be judging at a point because I was just entertained.
I was singing along with the lyrics.
I thought it was I thought it was a perfect song for you.
Thank you.
All right.
Robin? I have to say, you know, I w ever since I first started seeing you perform, there seems like there's this in-incredible volcanic eruption that always happens with you, like you have this amazing spirit and you're fearless, and I-I thought that that was your as as great as she was last week, I thought that was your best performance.
You were sensual, you were electric, you you you knew you knew when to throw the move on us, when to put your hands up and smile.
I mean, honestly, you really seemed like a-a superstar tonight.
I mean, you looked fearless and I mean, that was Yeah.
That was great.
All right, so that was all very glorious to hear, but let's find out your position on the chart.
Number two.
You are officially moving on to next week's live show.
Congratulations.
Go ahead to the lounge.
Yeah! All right, up next, Jennifer takes the stage with J.
Rome and performs Whitney's Houston's classic from "the bodyguard,".
"I will always love you.
" J.
Rome's proven himself to be the amateur to beat, but can he conquer a Whitney classic? Find out when we get back.
This is "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets," where our theme tonight is songs from the movies, and before the break, bridget performed and landed at the number two spot on the chart.
And with only two more performances to go, Jordan and Olivia are sitting in the bottom two and in danger of going home tonight.
Up next, it's Jennifer and J.
Rome's turn.
Last week, J.
Rome found himself right back at the top of the chart for the fourth week in a row, and this week, he is right back at it, taking on a song from the most awarded female artist of all time.
How are you? Good.
How are you? Good.
Good.
Well, let's talk about this songhis week.
Okay.
We can make an awesome emotional performance.
We can't make it too emotional, 'cause, you know, John legend doesn't like us crying.
You know what? John legend can take hormone supplements if he wants to get more empathy.
Okay? I can help John legend through his wantinto become more empathetic so that he might be tender enough to connect, yes, with his contestant or with a song.
I can help him with that.
Yes.
And I'm going to tell him that.
Talk to me afterwards, John.
Call me.
And I wish you joy and happiness Whitney Houston is my biggest inspiration, and singing one of the biggest soundtrack songs in history, "I will always love you" from "the bodyguard" soundtrack, is a dream come true.
And I will how does that feel? Where is that in your voice? I have to nail this song.
I have to nail all these notes.
I don't want no cracks.
I don't want anything to go wrong.
I just want to nail it.
All right.
It's okay? Yeah.
Okay.
Just gotta whoo! Play.
Okay.
This week, the bar is set really high.
Whitney Houston her voice both was and is a national treasure.
I like that I turned my head like a dog, like I'm a pup you Like this.
Like a puppy, like, trying to hear it.
So these are huge shoes to fill, and yet, go big or go home.
You know what I'm saying? 'Cause this is what this show is about.
It is performing to the top of your own ability.
I will always and I thought just do one of those unless we want to do two and we have the time and then I could take another you and we could switch off Yeah.
but I don't really have ah Regardless of where my place is on the chart We're gonna get 'em.
You know, I've been number one for the first four weeks, but that means nothing because if I screw this song up, I can be in the bottom two, so you have to constantly be on your "a" -game.
It's so nerve-racking, because most people, they're like, "oh, you can't do a Whitney song," you know, " if you go and do a Whitney song, you gotta do a Whitney song," and it's really high, and no guys are singing like this.
I have to nail it.
I k I keep saying that, but I have to nail this song.
I have to.
Oh, yeah.
Singing the Whitney Houston 4-time platinum hit.
"I will always love you" from "the bodyguard," here is Jennifer nettles and her second duet partner J.
Rome.
if I should stay I would only be in your way so I'll go but I know I'll think of you every stop of the way and I I will always love you I will always love you you you my darling, you mm, mm I hope life treats you kind and I hope you have all you dreamed of and I wish you joy and happiness but above all this I wish you love and I I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you I I will always love you I will always love you I hit the note! I would do that, too, but I'm gonna go with the, uh, classic.
Yeah.
J.
Rome, everybody.
I have got to ask you about the sensation of doing that song, 'cause it seems like it was a tightwire act.
Man, all I gotta say is that is the this is the highlight, the biggest moment of my life.
I'm not crying, John.
No, , no.
Really, it's it's the biggest moment of my life 'cause Whitney is my my biggest icon, and wow.
"Wow" sums it up pretty well.
Well, it's time to hear what the superstars have to say about that.
Kelly, wants to speak first, so I'm gonna go ahead and let you speak first.
I if I didn't have my heels on You know, I'll throw 'em at you.
You know No, I'm just kidding.
You are so good.
J.
Rome, you are so good.
Thank you, Kelly.
I mean All of y'all are really pushing y'allselves to sing these big songs, and so that's what I want.
It's a competition.
I want to see it.
I want I want you to stretch yourself.
I want to see what you can do.
You were nervous about the note.
I'm gonna shut up now.
I love you.
Okay.
I love you, too.
Thank you.
Robin.
Oh, man, what is there to say? I think I think the whole audience I think we all know.
I mean, um, there's a reason you've been number one every week.
You got the voice, you got the look, and and and when you when you sing that song, you really gave me the feeling like you were in love with Jennifer, and that's that's what that's I am.
I am.
He sort of is now at this point.
Oh, please.
No, I mean, uh, you know, let's start the rumors.
Get the tabloids involved.
But no, honestly, J.
Rome, I-I-I've been telling you you all the time, man, I think you're an amazing performer.
I think your future is so bright.
And, uh, and you know what also? You're just a good guy.
Your your life and your career is unstoppable right now.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Wow.
John? Ah! I see you cry.
John's trying to cry.
He's trying to cry.
Oh! And that's as close as he gets.
See? Yes, you can.
That performance was beautiful.
I'm getting a little emotional.
See? You can, too.
You just gotta get into it.
No, it was great.
What am I gonna say? It was it was really awesome.
Well done.
Thank you.
Okay, so we've heard the reviews appropriately, very good.
Now let's see what scores they locked in for you.
Oh.
You got a streak going.
Congratulations.
You're safe yet again.
Thank you.
Go ahead to the lounge.
So with that rank, we now know that, Jordan Meredith, you are definitely in the bottom two this evening Oh, my God! And will be singing for your life in a solo showdown.
We got one final duet, as Kelly clarkson and Jason farol head to Paris to take on a song from the movie "Moulin Rouge," and later, one amateur will be going home.
Don't go anywhere, y'all.
This is "Duets" on abc! Thank you and welcome back to the "Duets" stage.
Remember, next week, we'll be coming at you live, back on Thursday 8:00/7:00 central, but one of our amateurs won't be making it to next week's live show.
Before the break, we found out that Jordan is in the bottom two and will be singing for her life in a matter of minutes.
And with only one more performance left, Olivia is in jeopardy of joining her.
But last up it's Kelly clarkson and her second duet partner Jason farol's turn.
After Jason landed at number five on the chart last week, narrowly escaping the bottom two for the first time ever, let's take a look at how he approached this week's rehearsal with Kelly.
Hello.
Hello.
Last week, Jason was not in the bottom two.
Whoo! I can't get no satisfaction It's very cool to finally be out of the bottom two.
It felt really nice and it's a new feeling.
If I could just get you to America voting, they're gonna love you.
Please.
So I know.
I know.
That's the goal.
Well, let's kill 'em with this.
It's movie week this week, and I'm singing "come what may" from the movie "Moulin Rouge.
" I worked at a movie theater when this movie came out.
And I might've seen it 13 1/2 times.
I love it, so I'm glad you like the song.
Since I heard you first sing in your first audition, I heard you singing this song.
The difficult part with "come what may" is just literally having Jason commit to those melodies.
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste And just on that whole first verse, to get you to the next show, I need you to be really, uber present.
Jason has a tendency, um, to be noncommittal with singing.
Never knew I can feel like this He always gets really hesitant and then he goes pitchy, and it drives me insane and it's always at the very beginning of the song.
I see them when you're starting your songs, and they're all kind of like, what is the note? What are you singing? Yeah.
Yeah.
So you just have to really make sure and be present on that.
And I notice you're going come Yeah.
It's like you're closing up.
Come what may Okay.
Come what may That was good.
That was good.
If I do shake off the nerves early on in the song, I'll be able to do the song justice and do it well.
Suddenly my life don't seem such a waste I'm looking forward to Jason really nailing this song in front of Jennifer, John, and Paul.
Paul? Who's Paul? Singing the Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor duet "come what may" from the movie "Moulin Rouge," here is Kelly clarkson and her duet partner Jason farol.
I never knew I can feel like this like I never seen the sky before I want to vanish inside your kiss every day I love you more and more suddenly the world seems such a perfect place suddenly you move with such a perfect grace suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste it all revolves around you and there's no Mountain too high no river too wide sing out this song and I'll be there by your side storm clouds may gather and stars may collide I love you I love you until the end until the end of time come what may come what may I will love you I will love you suddenly the world seems such a perfect place come what may come what may I will love you until my dying day Yeah! Jason, Jason, Jason.
Yes.
Man.
So last week, everybody kinda came to a consensus that you found your swagger.
How much does that mean to you to hear that from the superstars? Good.
I was really nervous onstage, so I'm finally happy that I'm starting to break through that and just get out of my shell.
Just do one of these whenever you get too nervous.
A little backend bounce never hurt anybody.
All right, it's time to hear from our superstars.
- Paul, what are your thoughts? - Paul.
Actually I That is not fair.
I was really tired and I don't know why I was thinking of Peter, Paul & Mary at the time, and, like, and so it came out.
I'm just glad she didn't call me Mary.
- Jennifer, John, and Paul.
- No.
But no, uh, Jason, first of all, you look like a young Hugh Hefner, which I love.
All you're missing is a pipe and, uh, six blonde girls.
But, uh, besides that, you know, I love your voice.
I love your personality.
And I agree with Kelly as soon as America starts to vote, you're a danger to everybody, because you're so lovable and you have such an amazing personality, and you know, I think I honestly think that just that song I didn't get to hear the tone.
When you go up I love to hear you sing up a lot more because you have such a special tone, so I would've just liked to pick a song maybe that showed off your vocals more, but besides that, I, you know, I always like you, Jason.
You're you're a lovable guy.
That was really hard for you.
I mean, that was a pretty challenging song, right? Right.
But it's just a lot of it was a little bit in the lower register, - like the verses, you know - Yeah.
And you have such an amazing tone when you lift up.
I mean, it really it takes all of our breath away, so I would've just liked to hear you more up, in the upper register.
Thank you.
All right.
Jennifer? You guys looked hot.
It looked great.
I was able to actually see through this performance, see you in a little bit of a different light.
You know I love also musical theater, and I can see talent that you could have potentially in that as well, which is wonderful to be diverse and well-rounded, so I thought that was great.
I heard a couple of things still a little bit here and there pitchy-wise, like you were saying, in the bottom part of his register, where it's, like, okay, this song goes from way down here in the basement to up into the attic, and that takes a lot of technique and skill, but otherwise, I thought you gave a great performance, and I loved to sort of see you take on this character.
Thank you.
All right.
So, John, you had some concerns about the way that Jason was moving onstage last week.
Do you feel like he managed to do his thing a little more? I think he looked great.
I think actually, they looked really good together.
I felt the theatricality of it.
It was really cool, actually.
Um, my biggest concern was also the vocal area because it really most of the song was too low for you.
You just couldn't shine the way that you normally can shine when you're down in the area that's not your best area.
And every singer has their best areas, and I just felt like that wasn't your best area.
Huh? I just want to point out to everybody that it's a tenor part, the entire part.
Ewan McGregor is a tenor.
It's just it's low for him.
It's low for him right there.
All right, so our superstars' last vote will determine who is going to face off, amateur against amateur, in our solo showdown.
Jason, let's reveal the chart.
Wow.
Wow.
All right.
So you're gonna be singing for your life.
All right.
Go ahead to the lounge.
We got Jason farol and Jordan Meredith singing for their lives in our solo showdown, with one of them leaving us tonight.
You do not want to miss this, America.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
Welcome back to "Duets.
" Now before the break, our superstars revealed that Jason and Jordan are in the bottom two of our "Duets" chart, so right now, they are about to sing in our solo showdown.
Each one of them will sing their heart out, a cappella, no band, no backup, with everything on the line.
It's just them and a microphone.
Up first, here's Jason farol.
Well, there be something going down like a storm up in the sky so leave ain't gonna be played by your behavior how can I trust someone who's lying to me? say bow out, go, and I said, bow out, leave and pack your bags and go 'cause you're not for me see papa know best when times get hard so bring me down and always keep my feet on the ground And now singing for her life on the show, it's Jordan Meredith, everybody.
And I am telling you I'm not going you're the best man I've ever known there's no way I'll ever go no, no, no, no way hey no, no, no, no way I'm leaving without you I'm not leaving without you I don't wanna be free I'm stayin' I said I'm stayin' and you and you and you you're gonna love me oh, ooh hey you're gonna love me Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
Thank you.
So for the last time tonight, let's see what our superstars thought of that performance.
Kelly? I know.
It's a tough moment.
Uh, yeah, like, they're both mine, so, um, I mean, that's why I picked them both.
All right.
Robin? Uh, you know, I'm I'm I'm so proud of both of them.
I mean, uh, you guys, the most important thing is that you realize that this show is just the beginning of your careers.
You both have have such wonderful talent.
And, uh, you know, I love it when Jordan sings that sultry, sexy stuff, 'cause she's just a sultry, sexy girl, and I and and when Jason gets up, and you start growling, it's really special and wonderful.
I'm just proud of both of you, all the growth that you guys have had, and congratulations on on, uh, tackling this.
Jennifer? I'm always blown away by this part of the show, just to hear the talent in this way and the voices.
Your voices are so fantastic.
And just like Robin said, it's not the end all be all of your career.
It is just the beginning, and you both have come in here the youngest people on this show, and the growth that you have shown thus far is really, really impressive, and I can't wait to see what both of you do.
That's a good point.
So young, already accomplishing this.
John? I agree with Jennifer, especially what you said about them being so young.
You guys have so much room to grow.
Jason, I love your spirit, I love the way you interact with everybody around, the way you did with each of us.
I just feel like you have so much light inside of you, and you just keep giving it off.
And and, Jordan, that was a very smart choice about what song to sing.
It's like, "you're gonna love me "and you're gonna love me and I ain't going home.
" All right, so right now, all our four superstars are going to be entering a final secret score for each of our amateurs, between 1 and 100.
And when we come back, we'll find out which of the bottom two will make it to the live shows and who's going home tonight.
You won't want to miss this.
You're watching "Duets" on abc.
All right.
Welcome back to the "Duets" stage, where Jason farol and Jordan Meredith await the judges' decision on who will go on to the live shows and who will go home.
Before the break, they went head-to-head in our solo showdown, leaving it up to our superstars to determine who deserves to go on to the live shows next week and who's going home in just a matter of seconds.
Our superstars have officially locked in the scores and the results are in.
The amateur who is going home tonight is Jordan Meredith.
That means you're safe, Jason.
You can head down to the lounge.
Jordan, you know we love you around here.
You've been such an amazing, amazing person to have on the show.
Let's bring up Kelly.
You're good.
You're good.
You're good.
You're good.
You're good.
You're good.
You're good.
This is one show.
Kelly.
Hey, and can I just say, like This is your chance to get on television, so And people saw you, so They did and they loved you.
We loved you around here.
Do you want to say anything to Kelly? She can't talk and cry.
What's been the highlight of the show for you? Singing with her.
Wow.
And it seems like you guys have a friendship now, too.
It's a beautiful thing.
Thank you so much for being a part of the show, Jordan.
You guys can head down to the lounge.
Give it up for Jordan Meredith, everybody.
There you have it.
We are getting down to the wire with only five amateurs making it to the live shows, starting next week.
Thank you guys for watching.
And be sure to tune in next week, when our amateurs take the stage, singing live for you guys and it's songs from the last decade.
The voting shifts to you guys at home.
You will determine who stays and who goes.
It's all coming at you when we get back to our Thursday nights, live at 8:00/7:00 central.
We'll see you then.
Good night, everybody.
I have.

Thank you so much for being a part of the show, Jordan.
