American Dreams

1
Ready?
Matt Fitzpatrick
Um, how would you describe yourself
as a person?
Uh,
I'd describe myself as reserved.
I would say that I'm
I would say that I'm pretty quiet.
And here is Fitzpatrick, one
of the smallest in stature here this week.
Matt Fitzpatrick is one
of the most accomplished British golfers
we've seen in a long time.
He really burst onto the scene at age 18
when he won arguably the biggest
amateur tournament in the world.
Matthew Fitzpatrick,
the U.S. Amateur champion.
He became the first Englishman in, like,
a hundred years to win that tournament.
He looked like he was
about 12 years old when he won.
Matt Fitzpatrick,
the European Masters champion!
He's done it again!
Despite all his amateur success,
despite his success in Europe
Seventh European Tour title
Matt still has a gaping hole
in his resume
Matt Fitzpatrick!
winning on the PGA TOUR.
When he walks onto the tee, the reaction
from the crowd is almost like,
"That guy is tiny!"
Oh!
Matt's not like these big
alpha-male golfers from the States.
You are a tosser.
He's not 6'2". He's not 220.
He's not Dustin Johnson.
- Here we go.
- This is spectacular.
Unbelievably good!
- That's the drive of the year.
- Just going
Someone who hits it ridiculously far.
He definitely has an aura,
a swagger about him.
Do I believe in myself?
Absolutely.
Is it hard to win a PGA TOUR event?
Yeah, it's very difficult.
But if I'm prepared,
I feel confident
going into every tournament.
Well, even if I'm not prepared, I think
I'm still confident. But
You're playing against
the best players in the world
on the PGA TOUR.
So I need to prove to myself
that I can beat them.
Looking for that breakthrough win
over here in the States
for the first time.
Some guys go their entire career
without winning on the PGA TOUR.
And I think with Matt Fitzpatrick,
until he can unlock something else,
that might not turn into a victory.
I've been in Sheffield
probably for a week now
and not been recognized once.
I told you, nobody knows
who I am in Sheffield.
That's not true.
It must be nice to come back
and to be at home,
- since you started living in the States.
- I like being in Sheffield.
Yeah, like, I come home for
you know, to see family, to see friends.
I feel like I've lived
a very normal life growing up.
And my dad was a corporate bank manager.
My mom worked in insurance, and I feel
like my parents kind of instilled in me
that hard work was quite important.
And I think
that's why golf suits me so well.
If I hit 1,000 balls, it doesn't always
mean you're gonna play well,
but I feel like if you work hard in golf,
you're gonna get the rewards.
Have you still got
those old yardage books?
Yeah, they're in a box.
- Let's see what the oldest book is.
- Holy smokes.
See what the oldest book is I can find.
- That is mad.
- Here you go. This is a good one.
Stage 2 Q-School. I'll show you
how far I hit it when I was ten years old.
- Two-sixty?
- Yeah. Not even that.
Since I was young, probably 14 or 15,
I've always wrote down
what shots I've hit, how far, what club.
172 172 6-iron. Wow.
Is that what it was?
But since you were 15?
It's true. I can show you 7,000 shots,
if people want to see that.
I'm, like, always, always, always pushing
to be better.
And the analytics show me,
in black and white,
where I need to improve.
Massive tee shot on the 16th.
Among the top 30
in strokes gained off the tee
That is just pounded.
Ever since the start of the year,
I've, you know, consistently, slowly been
adding length to my game
and it's made a big difference.
You've seen the work he's been
doing to get that length you talked about.
He was working
on speed training,
swinging some weighted clubs
as fast as I've ever seen
anybody swing them.
To give myself a chance
of winning the PGA TOUR,
and to compete with the big guys out
there, I knew I needed to add distance.
Well, it's paying off.
He's got four top-10s
in his last six starts.
Nobody works harder in
professional golf than Matt Fitzpatrick.
It's just the truth.
But it's one thing to play well
on Thursday or Friday or even Saturday,
but once the pressure starts building,
once the lights get brighter,
once all the fans start
to congregate around your group,
that's when you really have to prove
that you can handle it.
And not everyone can.
Return to Southern Hills.
It's his third round
underway here
on a chilly Saturday in Tulsa.
The PGA Championship. When you talk about
winning a major championship,
this is one that has changed the lives
of a lot of players.
From Florida, Brooks Koepka.
Collin Morikawa
It's never an easy championship.
I think we have 96 of the top 100
in the world teeing it up this week.
Yeah!
These are guys who are
mind-blowingly confident.
- Sorry, guys, after the round. Sorry.
- Good luck today!
Matthew Fitzpatrick,
when it comes to looking
at these late starters tomorrow,
he certainly is the most seasoned guy.
Looking for his first win in America.
He's won seven times on the World Tour.
He knows what to do,
and this would be a great state.
Chance for a rare birdie at the 18th.
It's rare. There's only three of them.
A man from Sheffield, England.
Seventeenth in the world.
Yeah, long way back.
- And he's hit a heck of a shot here.
- Nailed it. What a shot.
From 234. Whoo.
All the way!
What a round! Matt Fitzpatrick.
Into second alone with that birdie.
We are three down, one to go
for this week's PGA Championship.
Tomorrow, we'll have a new champion.
And in that final group on Sunday,
it will be Matt Fitzpatrick.
Good news is with the tee time, I'll be
able to watch Formula 1 in the morning.
Matthew Fitzpatrick is the guy
to stay ahead of tomorrow.
I don't know what'll happen,
but Sunday's a completely different day–
I told them you were coming.
I knew they'd be hiding.
They literally literally said, "Oh yeah,
we'll we're gonna go. We'll hide."
I was like, "Right. Okay, thanks."
Here you go.
What time do you tee off?
- I'm 1:35, to start.
- You're the last group, eh?
Yeah, last group tomorrow.
So what? They're gonna follow you
for the rest of your life now?
Yeah, I'm going to the bathroom shortly.
They're gonna come in as well.
- Oh, sweet. How nice is that?
- You get used to it after a while.
Oh yeah?
When you play well, you get a bit
more attention, apparently, so
Danny. Just in time to be on Netflix.
Be careful what you say.
Oh shit. What's good? How we doing?
I have, like, five minutes of work to do.
Is that okay?
Yeah. You're allowed.
Matt is one of my closest friends.
We went
to school together at Northwestern.
- How you doing? Good to see you.
- How are you?
I had my eye out for him, 'cause
I've always been just, like, a golf sicko.
And, uh, I saw him in the dining hall,
uh, just kind of eating by himself.
I walked up to him, like,
"I know who you are."
I think he was feeling a little lonely.
Being from, like, England,
he didn't really know anybody.
I gotta write, actually.
People think my job is just tweeting.
- I get that a lot. It's most of it.
- All you ever do anyway.
He's one of these kids
who was consumed by golf from a young age.
And I remember
we went home for Christmas break,
and I got a text being like,
"I'm not going back. I'm gonna turn pro."
And he becomes
the number one junior in England.
Right, I'm going for a shower
'cause I stink.
Okay.
When it comes to golf,
it's all business, all the time.
He's very, very serious about his career.
I think more serious, and I think
the older British guys would say,
a lot more serious than they ever were.
I need Matt to get hammered
at my wedding so I can see him dance.
- I've never seen Matt dance.
- Won't happen, either.
- Have you ever danced?
- Yeah.
- Sometime when I was probably
- Grinding in college?
- Not even that.
- Didn't stay long enough.
You'd be like, "Too loud!
It's two in the morning!"
- Some of us have practice.
- True.
- Okay, I'm done.
- You done? Is it any good?
- Probably not.
- It's terrible.
I said, "Matt Fitzpatrick is gonna
absolutely shit the bed."
- "Really, he's got no chance."
- More than likely.
"Never won a tournament."
- I've won a few on that tour.
- On that tour.
- Wow, I forgot about that.
- That tour
You can win all you want
on that European Tour
I remember Daniel Berger, like, "Yeah,
but one win here is like four in Europe."
And he kept saying that.
He kept saying that.
I do think you're due.
- Oh.
- Yeah. That
Great to be with you
this Championship Sunday.
Final round of the 104th PGA Championship.
In golf, there's no feeling like it,
being near the top of the leaderboard
going into Sunday.
There's no more isolating spot to be
than when you're in that final pairing.
On Sunday of a major,
that feeling doesn't get bigger.
You've seen so many guys
get close and fail because
they don't know what it's like.
They don't know what it's like
to close out a tournament.
One bad swing, one bad shot,
can mean the difference
between winning and choking.
Who's it gonna be, folks?
They've played themselves into a position,
which proves that they have the ability,
but do you have the deep self-belief
that you can get this done?
From England, Matt Fitzpatrick.
Hammer that driver, baby!
Let's go, Matty!
Well, here we go.
Down to the last two.
Ready to take it all 18 holes
with Pereira and Fitzpatrick.
has the experience
to be able to handle this moment.
Fore left!
Oh!
That's a bad mistake there.
Some serious luck
to have a shot through those trees.
We haven't seen anyone
close to being that far over the first.
Now this for bogey.
Really?
Watched Matt warm up,
and I thought it was a little rushed.
Oh.
I mean, seriously? Jesus Christ.
So that is gonna
drop him back to four behind.
And a tough start to this final nine.
Time starting to run out a bit.
He's pretty dejected.
Yeah. You can see it in the demeanor.
He just hasn't had his best stuff today.
It's been that sort of a round.
Um, it never found its flow.
This game
is really, really difficult,
and pressure makes it even harder.
He's got to learn mentally,
how to deal with bad shots a lot quicker.
You have to be better than 156 guys.
And there's gonna be someone playing out
of their mind, and you've gotta beat them.
Again, at the PGA Championship
Justin Thomas.
I think that's what makes
these guys who win and win and win
and do it at a pretty impressive rate
It's just so hard to fathom how they are
that much better than their competitors.
We start with huge news
from the world of golf
as two-time major champion
Dustin Johnson revealed
he has resigned from the PGA TOUR
in order to compete in the Saudi-funded
LIV Tour Golf Invitational Series.
Dustin, you've won,
at last count, $74 million
just on the PGA TOUR.
I've done pretty well out there
for the last 15 years,
but, you know, this is something that
I thought was best for me and my family.
Breaking news,
the PGA TOUR Commissioner, Jay Monahan,
has said there will be disciplinary action
against 17 members
who teed off in the first LIV Golf event
outside of London.
The following players are all banned
from playing on the PGA TOUR,
including the likes
of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.
LIV is being talked about
kind of everywhere now.
It's just, like, a stark reminder of how
dramatic and how big this thing has been.
Everywhere I go, at the game last night
here in San Francisco,
people are talking about
LIV versus the PGA.
This is an opportunity that gives me
the most balance in my life.
We all agree that when Phil Mickelson says
this gives him
"the most balance in my life,"
he means money, right?
Oh my goodness.
It's great. I got some nice moves.
They're so funny.
- They are.
- That thing So good.
Oh God.
That is so good.
- So good.
- That's the best part.
I could see you on the green
doing that celebration dance right there.
Right.
If I'm playing well. Obviously,
gotta put four good rounds together
if I want to do that,
but I know how to do it.
Just ask him if he minds.
Joey!
Tell Joey to move his fucking cart.
Always in the fucking way.
I'm trying to get
my big break, player!
That was gonna be my big break!
Go Go
You need to go to the putting green.
I need to hit it closer, dog.
That's all I need.
You need to do a lot of things.
All right, Frank,
the strapping rookie, Dustin Johnson
He is a long, long hitter.
Um
My name is Dustin Johnson,
and I'm a professional golfer.
Hit his drive 357.
He absolutely crushed it,
but just one problem.
There's, uh, some people up ahead,
and he actually hit it past them.
He flew it over their heads.
Cheez Whiz.
I turned pro in 2007.
Dustin Johnson has won
for the first time on the PGA TOUR.
I was 23.
I don't feel like I was really
any different than I am today. Just
The resume's a little bit better
than it was in 2007.
Three wins in a row for Dustin Johnson.
Dustin domination.
Number one in the world.
The bigger the boom ♪
I mean, all the wins
are definitely highlights.
You know, obviously the majors
being at the top of those.
Dustin Johnson on his way
to a U.S. Open Championship.
Probably the most important
shot Dustin Johnson has ever hit.
What a gem, Dustin Johnson!
In 2016, I won the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
You can't describe it.
It's an unbelievable feeling.
From then on,
I think I've played really well.
It just kind of gave me that confidence.
You know, I've had a wonderful career
on the PGA TOUR,
and, you know, I'm very proud of it
and always will be. And
You know, obviously, now,
I've taken a kind of a different step
in my in my life and career.
We haven't talked about last week.
How was it?
I'm so bummed I couldn't be there,
but I want to hear about it.
- Behind the scenes.
- For me, I enjoyed it.
They had music playing on the range,
which was nice.
It just created a little different vibe.
I felt like the fans enjoyed it.
- I just don't think they care.
- It's good for golf.
The decision to join LIV,
I mean, it
You know, it finally just came down to,
you know, the offer that they made me.
For me, it was playing less,
making more money.
Pretty simple.
If someone offered anyone a job,
doing the same thing
they're already doing,
but less time at the office
and they're gonna pay them more,
pretty sure
you're gonna take it.
I mean And something's
wrong with you if you didn't.
I think a lot of people
thought the event in London,
there'd be nobody there.
Things change. Things evolve.
How was your flight out?
Thinking about the kids. Last time
we were watching Little Mermaid,
and they told me to stop singing.
They were like,
"Mom, we really want to hear it."
I was like, "What are you afraid of?"
They're special kids, that's for sure.
It's cool.
I don't think that Dustin would ever make
a bad choice for his children.
And people have to understand,
at the end of the day,
that's who he chose this for.
Of course, I get
I get what everyone's saying,
but my dad, being a hockey player
I'm sure, as a kid,
there were times when I'm like "Why does
my dad have to play on my birthday?"
This is about Dustin and the kids and me
and taking care of us
and being there with us.
Do you think people doubt you
because of LIV?
I don't really care.
We're gonna go shoot some hoops.
I am awful at basketball.
Oh!
Wow, Dustin, you're the best athlete here.
Okay.
No, best golfer, not best athlete, okay?
It's good to
It's good to have some kicks.
I know I'm one
of the best golfers in the world.
I think I've proven it
over a long period of time.
When I show up to a major,
I mean, I'm there to win.
Ooh!
And they can have their own opinion.
For me, personally,
I feel like my reputation
as a golfer's already kind of set,
so I don't think
there's anything to prove.
Ooh!
- All day long.
- Fire.
Everyone expected Phil. Everyone expected
some of the older European guys
at the tail end of their career.
But when Dustin Johnson made the move
to LIV, it was kind of the turning point.
And they're slowly pluckin' off players.
The PGA TOUR has still managed to keep
the core intact, like the best young guys.
You know, Rory hasn't left or Scottie
or Collin Morikawa and Matt Fitzpatrick.
But it's it's got a lot more momentum
than I ever thought it would.
The PGA Championship I just
never felt like I played well that day.
Felt off from the first tee shot.
It's difficult to take because I feel like
I've worked so hard to be there.
Yeah, it's definitely a tough one.
Yeah, I think some guys
do doubt themselves. Yeah.
I think when you're knocking on the door
for so long and it doesn't open,
it's tough to, you know, keep
doing what you're doing.
But I think you got to, you know,
figure out what went wrong,
why did it go wrong, and start again.
For me, it's straight to the analytics,
straight to the numbers.
We create these score sheets, effectively,
where, you know, we're tracking
club head speed, ball speed,
whether I hit it short side or not.
I know the work that I'm doing is right.
I never thought about, you know,
suddenly changing my approach.
When Sunday comes around
and I'm in the mix,
I definitely feel like that I can play
the shots under pressure when I need to,
and I can have that chance again,
and I definitely believe in myself.
- How are you?
- How are you?
You got your clubs
in right weird pockets, you.
- You got two 8-irons?
- Yeah, one long and one short.
- What?
- I'm joking.
Wow, this really is a film thing, innit?
Can I take a picture of it?
- Yeah.
- It even has your name on it.
I might get one of those B Reels.
This is Alex Interview, take one.
My name is Alex Fitzpatrick,
and I'm Matt's younger brother.
Is this just a practice club?
That's a normal club.
That's what I've been using.
Everyone knows
Matt is a statistical person.
You know, I'll give you a tip.
On even dates,
you should practice with even numbers.
And odd dates,
you should practice with odd numbers.
Probably not the athlete
that some of the guys are. He's
Works harder than them, most likely,
and finds ways to get better.
Just finding the .1% of everything
that will make him better and beat them.
Alex, how's your practice different?
Writing every shot down?
No, he doesn't do that.
- Do you do that on the range?
- Yeah.
- Every shot on the range?
- Yeah.
- No, I don't do that.
- You don't do that?
- You should use the new one.
- That's what I'm gonna do.
Sometimes
when you're not playing well,
you beat yourself up more than you should.
But after Matt lost the PGA,
instead of just moping around,
it was hard at work
and "I'm going to win the next one."
- Cool.
- All right, time to go.
You know?
"I'm gonna win the U.S. Open."
- What's your plan, then?
- Going back, and I'm going to the gym.
That's it. Go to bed early. Let's go.
I'm not carrying that bag, though.
- You sure?
- Yeah.
- I've carried enough of your golf bags.
- You have, but not anymore.
And here is Fitzpatrick,
looking back at his younger brother, Alex.
Again, just 18 years old,
one of the smallest in stature
here this week, on the cusp of trying to
put his name on the U.S. Amateur trophy.
It's a beauty.
Right down the middle.
This year
one of the majors is being held
at a golf course that I've played before
called the Country Club at Brookline.
And I've got some history there, because
I won the U.S. Amateur there nine years ago.
Matthew Fitzpatrick,
the 2013 U.S. Amateur champion.
To have my family there
as well was really special.
When you left the shores
across the way,
did you ever think
this might happen this week?
I came into it with positives,
and I've been playing nicely
and practicing quite hard,
but I didn't think
about getting this far, really.
Congratulations on a great week of golf.
The U.S. Amateur.
To be back where I won the U.S. Amateur
at Brookline is gonna be special.
I think having that comfort factor around
a golf course that I've played well around
will, uh, hold me in good stead.
Get in the hole!
- Got it.
- Money! Win!
Yeah!
Just outside beautiful Boston
at the Country Club
The 122nd U.S. Open Championship.
Back in Brookline.
This is as old-school
and old-style classic as it gets.
Timeless look and challenging features,
which will once again ultimately decide
the winner of the latest U.S. Open here.
They all have a chance.
They understand that there's no
local knowledge on this golf course,
other than by a few players.
Welcome back
to the interview area.
We are joined by Matt Fitzpatrick.
Do you think your win in 2013
might give you the edge?
I certainly think it gives me
an edge over the others.
It just feels a bit more like
a home game this week.
We'll go to Dan.
It feels like over the last month,
maybe it's started at Southern Hills,
but you're just getting more attention.
We can see it from the outside,
but I'm always interested in when guys
make that jump, what that feels like.
It's because everyone's leaving
the PGA TOUR, that's why.
They're digging up the dregs.
Yeah, I mean,
I think there is a little bit to do
with guys that had gone to LIV.
Great ball.
Second round
of the U.S. Open underway.
The guys who have teed it up
in the first LIV event
are now banned from PGA TOUR events.
But they can still play
in the last two majors of the year.
- Collin, the LIV question
- Here we go.
Or a LIV question
What does legacy mean to you?
And do you think your legacy will change?
I don't like when you keep asking
multiple questions.
Is there a figure
at which you would swap tours?
I don't understand. I'm trying
to focus on the U.S. Open, man.
I'm just tired of it.
From Jupiter, Florida,
our 2016 U.S. Open champion,
Dustin Johnson.
Matt Fitzpatrick, Dustin Johnson,
two under par in the opening round,
currently tied for seventh place.
Did you play any sports
in high school or just golf?
Yeah, we played everything.
Whatever season it was,
basketball, baseball, football, soccer
He could have gotten a scholarship
in three different sports.
From England, Matt Fitzpatrick.
He's so meticulous
in the way he goes about playing golf,
but he's up against a real beast today.
A tremendous athlete.
Playing with DJ's always interesting.
He's definitely got
an intimidating presence.
Oh, what a shot.
But I feel like, you know,
I've played against all the great players
and beaten them. And I feel like
I've always thought to myself
that I can beat him.
- Oh!
- A rough three-putt.
Fucking idiot.
Dustin Johnson
might be in form here this week.
If anyone thinks that
Dustin's lost his competitive spirit,
they don't know Dustin well enough,
because he is still
ready to show you who the fuck he is.
And there's a reason why
he's going back to play these majors.
He wants to win
just as much as they do.
Fitzpatrick has bogeyed
his last two holes.
You'll make mistakes.
It's the mental strength from here on in.
Why is he such a good putter?
- Why is he a good putter?
- Yeah.
I used to beat him at putting
when I was younger, so he didn't like it.
- Really?
- Yeah.
No, he just
He just works incredibly hard.
No searching for club-head speed here.
Sheer power.
Look, in any sport, size matters.
Sprinters are bigger,
swimmers are taller,
golfers are bigger and stronger,
but there's some guys
who are so world-class
that they can still compete
at the highest level of golf,
and Fitz has always just been
the consummate professional.
Fitzpatrick needs to make
something happen here.
Wow.
He hits it further than DJ.
That was pretty good.
It takes a lot of hard work
and a lot of confidence under pressure
to hit shots with that kind of speed.
And it seems to be paying off.
Yeah, he's very competitive.
He has that altar boy look of being,
you know, a lot younger than his years
and quite softly spoken
and, you know, quite a nice guy,
but he's got an edge about him.
Oh!
He's got a bit
of extra grit inside that,
you know, he likes to beat certain players
and, you know, you have
to have that in you to succeed.
Dustin Johnson will play next.
He's still looking for that
first birdie of the day, fellas.
Is it gonna come here at the last hole?
Hey.
You okay?
- Yeah.
- Yeah?
I played better today
than I did yesterday.
- Yeah.
- Five shots worse.
Dustin Johnson in at one over.
Patrick Reed, he too will be one over par.
Eleven of the 15 who played
in the LIV series last week,
or have announced their commitment,
missed the cut.
Dustin Johnson, three over 73.
On the right, Don.
Dustin, you obviously want
to be competing and contending in majors.
How sharp do you think
you'll be able to remain
as a golfer playing on the LIV Tour?
Uh, just as sharp
as I would playing anywhere.
Thanks.
Love the PGA TOUR and felt like
I had a great career on the PGA TOUR.
I'm very thankful
to have that opportunity, um
You know, but, like, it's just a new day.
It's not up to me, so
But, hopefully, you know,
one day we can coexist nicely.
Were you asked to join LIV?
Um
I wasn't. I mean, it was a bit
of a half-hearted proposal from them.
And like I said, you know,
I want to play against the best players.
And that, for me, is on the PGA TOUR.
So that's where I want to be.
On a chilly Sunday,
we welcome you to the U.S. Open.
What a day yesterday.
So much movement at the top.
Is golf on?
