Last Chance U: Basketball (2021) s01e05 Episode Script
Colby Ranch
1
With my puppy.
He a good pup.
That's a good walker.
Over here's a very mean
and bad-acting dog.
He's huge.
Causes disturbances and problems.
We don't like him.
Woof! Ruff, ruff, ruff!
This world is so different
from East Los Angeles.
This is a completely different world
I live in out here.
And then I get in the car and
I switch modes,
and then I just go to go to that place.
It's stressful up in that gym sometimes.
In that weight room or that game.
I'd probably go crazy
if I lived down there close to it,
'cause you could never turn it off.
Take a minute. Come on.
I want to show you what I got.
Every day I gotta do this laundry.
I do it at night.
Then I gotta come back and finish it.
For the last 20 years, I've been a
head high school basketball coach
in the Inland Empire.
I've won seven league championships.
State finalist.
Last year at this time,
we were LA Times top ten,
playing some of the best teams
in the country.
These fools be taking advantage of me.
Look at all this stuff, yo.
Like, they got me in here,
like, doing they laundry, yo.
But last spring, our principal got fired.
And then, a week later, they terminated
the president of our school.
Well, the top two guys are gone.
And so, like, the train was comin'.
Like, I was like,
"Oh, shoot. I might be next."
I walked in, they were like,
"Hey, Rob, we need your keys."
Uh, so, I was a coach without a team.
Obviously, I always gotta put
the hoops down, everywhere I go.
So, a mutual friend said,
"You know anything about East LA?"
I hit John up, like, "I heard
you might be lookin' for somethin'."
So he asked me to come down.
I'm drivin' to get here.
I'm like, "What am I doin'?"
You need to get out of here.
Take somebody to dinner or something.
No, I left my daughter
at the softball game, man.
But we met for six hours that day.
And at the end of the six hours I said,
"Well, hey, you know, let
let me kinda think about
what direction I'd like to do."
So I went home
and I told my wife about it.
She goes, "Do you like the guy?"
I was like, "He's a great dude."
"He's a he's a good, strong Christian
man, and passionate about helping kids."
You gotta play cat and mouse.
It's cat and mouse!
Boom. Get rid of it. Get it back.
He be wearing me out
just watching him.
It's somethin' I wanted to do. But it's
my wife who said, "You're doing it."
I didn't have a choice. She said,
"Get in the car, you're gonna do it."
"That's your opportunity."
Thank God, we could do this
with a ginormous pay cut.
Like, I don't want you to just be like,
"Well, we're about to have
three kids in college."
"I gotta go take a teaching job
at a high school."
This is your your heart.
You've always wanted to do this.
It can't just be about the money.
It has to be about, like, accomplishing
what you really wanna accomplish.
Community colleges,
they're not kind to assistants.
They don't pay you. They don't give you
very many opportunities to be full-time.
I thought about not coaching last summer,
when I was let go from my job.
Just like in a relationship, your
your love affair with hoops evolves,
and it becomes something different.
Like, in the beginning of a relationship,
it is hot, and it is heavy,
and it is exciting,
and then it just becomes
a part of your life.
And when you love somethin' like that,
now you just
you literally can't
see your life with without it.
If you're just joining us,
a poor shooting performance
- from the Huskies.
- No help, John. No help.
East LA still clinging on
to a three-point lead.
Four minutes, 16 seconds to go.
Highler from the corner.
Off the right side of the rim,
and goes over the backboard.
Unbelievable, bro.
Hey, commit, commit, commit!
- Wilson for three.
- No!
Malik Muhammad fouls Wilson
on the three-point attempt.
Dude, he hit the ball!
- What the hell?
- What are you talking about?
It's been that kind of night. Just sloppy.
Dude, stinking the gym up
defensively.
- We're on upset alert all of a sudden.
- Spread! Spread!
Tries to go around Highler.
Highler nearly clotheslines him.
He's in dismay.
- Shaun.
- They calling it, you gotta get off.
Zebras always know best
as Highler will sit down.
Just leave me fuckin' in.
I have two!
I'm good, bro. I'm fucking good. I ain't
fouled out yet, bro. Not once, bro.
You know how he is.
I know.
- That's why it's fucking frustrating.
- Damn!
Shaun, sub.
That's fucked up, man.
That's fucked up.
It's now a 70 to 66 lead,
with the South Coast Conference title
on the line for East LA.
But not a sense of urgency
from the star players.
Oh, my God, bruh. Fuck.
Spread! Spread!
Go get the ball!
Hampton drives. The runner, good.
- Fool caught my hand.
- Fuck! Let's fucking go, Joe!
Quick swing of momentum,
back into the hands of East LA.
KJ gets a steal.
Go boom some shit!
Go boom some shit!
Tomahawk jam. And possibly the nail.
Fifteen seconds to go.
Off the left iron
and quickly into the front court.
- Dunk it!
- It's Highler.
Highler will dribble the ball out
instead of making a layup.
I would've dunked it.
And a backcourt violation
is actually called.
What? The game is over, bro.
The game is over.
The game, Coach, can you tell
- I knew he was gonna do that, too.
- Wait, wait.
- The game is over.
- The game is over.
So, .8 will be put on the clock,
as Highler was trying
- to give the ball to the official.
- Throw it in.
- Throw the ball in.
- What?
This ugly ass motherfucker
wanna take it out on me.
Deshaun tried to be a asshole,
and tried to knee the ball.
Take it out on me. Blow the game.
- What is .8 going to determine?
- Come on, bro.
People wanna go home, dawg.
- It's over.
- There we go.
That will do it.
He's sorry as shit.
Shaun, you know
why they called that?
'Cause he's a bitch.
It was not pretty, but that will do it.
What's up with that last play, G?
- Did
- Zero point zero.
What's up with that last backcourt call?
That shit was ugly as fuck.
Can we get our car
off the emergency brake? Pump the gas?
At this point in the season, our identity
is that we're a second half team.
Going five miles an hour, man.
That's not good, though.
We gotta fix it.
We're saying what the problem is, bro,
but let's come up with a solution,
you feel me?
- What's yours?
- I don't have one.
I'm just sayin' man, like, c'mon.
There it is.
Let's try to figure someth
As a group, though, you feel me? We can
- I don't know what to say.
- As a group, we can figure it out.
What, you think I was gonna
come up with some shit?
You don't listen to me.
Let's talk about it.
- I be trying. You don't listen to me.
- Bro
- Tell me, then. Explain.
- You want me to now?
- Since it's a show now?
- You making it a show.
- No, I'm good, bro. I'm good.
- All right.
See that shit right there.
That's the shit right there?
- You the one, idea guy. Come on.
- All right, bro.
Solution man.
- You the captain, dawg, like
- Solution man.
Capt Capt Lead us, bro.
That's exactly
what I'm worried about.
What about these other dudes?
It ain't about that, dude.
It's about tryin' to get it done.
Y'all held it together this long.
Don't shut it down mentally now.
Your livelihood is on the line right now.
The goal is to see you playin' on TV.
And that approach will not get you on TV.
It's going to take more for you
to get what you wanna get.
"Ah, okay, yeah, whatever."
Get mad 'cause I call you out.
It's your life.
It's over in a couple of weeks.
You can do somethin' special.
Gosh, man.
When you gonna figure it out?
When, bro?
Man, come on.
Gosh!
Look what y'all got.
Look what the hell you all got.
Them dudes over there,
if we said, "Hey, give us $200
and you can be You can just hop in."
Pfft! I'd guarantee they'd find $200,
even though we all broke.
This is it.
Just lock in and focus. Come on, man.
Love you too, Coach. Love you too, Coach.
- "Family" on three. One, two, three.
- Family!
- Keep your head.
- Let's get out of here.
Let's go. Let's get outta here.
Damn!
Most teams, it's normal
to have a little bit of friction.
Like, that's normal.
You're supposed to have friction.
Our season's eight months,
where there's a constant grind
on the body, on the mental.
It's hard as hell here. It's hard.
Like that form!
- Give me that. Give me that.
- Whoa!
- What are you doin'?
- What are you talking about?
Coach, he smacked all face.
- Everybody on the line.
- What happened?
- Five in a minute.
- Whoa, what the fuck?
With all the characters
and the different personalities,
it can just destroy your team.
Let me get three over here.
We gonna play or complain?
- I'm good. I'm trying to play.
- Up the line. Let's play.
Let's play!
Don't come out with
that hacking bullshit. Play defense.
- Yes, sir, man. Yes, sir, Ron!
- Come on, man!
You should have punched that nigga.
Stupid dumbass
slapped me in the face.
I wanted to just beat the shit out of him.
Like I said,
you should've punched him.
We have some real A-holes on our team.
Like, some guys who are some real A-holes.
Stop the ball! Close out, run back!
What the fuck is wrong
with your passes today, dawg?
Deshaun is the most likable A-hole
I've ever met in my entire life.
It's not just about you.
Give me the ball back.
It ain't never
been about me, nigga.
I'd fuckin' shoot 20 times a game
if it was about me, nigga.
When is it gonna implode? That's
what happens in junior college basketball.
You have guys on the team, like,
"You gotta get me the ball
because this kid
already has a scholarship."
"What about me?" 'Cause that's what JC is.
Just a holding pattern
so you can get to something better.
So, we're waiting the whole year
for the for the shoe to drop.
Fuck.
Deshaun's numbers last night, oh, my God.
Him and Joe, yo.
We fallin' apart at the wrong time.
That's his frustration. He's thinking
it's something else. It's him.
He can't make a shot.
Everybody need to get out
of here and everybody'll be all good.
Once everybody's out of here,
everybody'll be all good.
Fuck, bruh,
I don't feel like doing this shit, dude.
I think everybody been
around each other a bit too much.
It's gettin' to niggas, man.
People assume you've got one loss,
that you have none of that.
No, it's the same.
We've just been fortunate
that we won games in spite of.
It's frustrating 'cause, like, all the way
until I cut my finger I felt all right.
- It threw you off a bit.
- I'm still coming back from that.
- It's just frustrating, bro.
- I know.
- I shouldn't be having these slumps.
- It's okay.
Not if I'm as a good as I think I am.
Yeah. We're just gonna work on it.
You know, go hard, and just make sure
you're good
- Yeah.
- mental-wise.
- There's things you have to go through
- I'm tired of feeling like this.
I know.
- Tired of this
- You'll be okay.
- Tired of this feeling.
- Yeah.
Like I'm always trying
to come back from something.
- Go get some donuts.
- Where they at?
Out there on the table.
What's good, what's good?
Krispy Kreme.
Donuts outside!
Krispy Kremes before practice?
It's about to be a good day. Goddamn it.
They glazed!
What else would you get from there?
Oh, you said that!
You foul!
At least Deshaun brought donuts, dawg.
That's his peace offerin' right there?
Nothing to us.
- At least he gave the team an offering.
- That's cool.
Fuck y'all yesterday.
- But here's some donuts.
- Yeah. Yeah.
- Come here.
- Got a donut?
Come here. I'll get a donut.
- Shaun
- They're gone.
All right, look.
Bro, you missed three days.
I like to have two or three guys that
can play freakin' 40 minutes straight.
You supposed to be one of 'em.
I'mma not sub you
when you're conditioned to do that.
But you were not conditioned to do that.
Whenever you get the snot
and boogers coming out of your nose
- What are you talkin' about?
- You ain't
- That's when I'm sick.
- No, but I'm just sayin', though.
- You know?
- Yeah
You not trusting me, you assumin'
it's like I'm trying to come at you all
You know, no.
- No, I just be wonderin', like
- Yeah.
- I don't know what's goin' on, though.
- Don't try to figure it out, though.
You trying to figure out
what's goin' on in the subs,
and I'm sitting like,
"Shaun, it ain't nothin'"
It's only certain ones, though.
Certain ones, I could tell
It seemed like I did somethin' wrong,
- so I just be wonderin'
- No!
- if I did somethin' wrong.
- It was like
I just was like,
"I'm not answerin' that right now."
I shouldn't have to answer it.
You gotta trust what I'm doin'.
And I'mma tell you this, man.
Portland Portland came to see you.
They came to see only you.
Now, you need to clean up the turnovers.
Because it was just,
"All right, Coach, I'll holler back."
- You know what I'm sayin'?
- Yeah.
It should have been,
"Let me see the transcripts. Let me"
That's where That's where
That's where I'm like, "Gosh."
You know what I'm sayin'?
Yeah, all right.
Just to explain to you,
since you wanna know now.
- All right.
- You don't trust me still,
after a year and a half.
- You still got
- What do you want me to say?
- You still got runnin' to do, though.
- I'll do it.
He brings Krispy Kreme
and everybody, "Deshaun!"
"You brought Krispy Kreme.
You the man! You the man!"
That's his way of apologizing.
You gotta have a feel, man,
just the temperament of the team and
when the team is down, when the team needs
to be lifted up, picked up.
So I gotta be
a little bit more understanding.
It's not always the kids, man. We gotta
you know, be a little bit more
We gotta approach 'em a bit different.
You know? We gotta learn
a little bit about these kids, and
you know, rules without relationships
equal rebellion.
Oh!
My shit!
And one. Nigga, he just held me.
Nigga, what the fuck!
Send his shit back!
Send his shit back!
You just held me
to block my shot, nigga.
- Say you ain't hold me to block my shot.
- No. You know I do this shit.
- You know I do this. Come on, Joe.
- You know you weak, nigga.
Malik was here
longer than I have been.
Closer relationship with Mosley than I do.
And if I'm speaking selfishly for myself,
yes, I mean, I wanna start.
I mean, that's my role
that I've been used to all my life
is start and put the team on my back.
I think I should start, come playoffs.
Look at Malik, man.
Fucking dead tired, don't even know
what the fuck to do with the ball.
I can't fold under pressure.
I can't give up that starting role.
I work hard for that just as much
as he worked hard
for whatever position he's in.
Do you feel him breathing
down your neck a little bit?
Uh, yeah, a little bit.
I'm not sayin'
I'm shakin' in my boots or anything
but if he starts,
he can average, like, 20, easy.
Are you content with what you got?
That's what it seems like to me.
It's just my opinion.
It seem like you're content with, "I got
about eight, nine offers. I'm cool."
I feel like I'm still not
where I need to be at, but
At some point, Coach gonna have to bench
you if you continue to play like that.
I told him that last night.
- Come here, bro.
- I'm being real, like Pfft.
It was so bad.
I was just, like, "Get him out the game,
man. He don't look good."
If it ain't you,
then figure out a career real quick.
Because if you don't love this, dude,
you're not gonna make it long.
You've really gotta embrace this, 'cause
at the next level, it's all business.
You look at it like,
"I'm 19, I'm 20, I got time to fix it."
But what you don't realize is you don't.
The next thing you know,
you're 30 and it's over. It's over.
You got a chance to set yourself up
or you got a chance to be the 6'9" dude
in the factory or on the dock
or in the grocery store.
I know what I'm capable of.
So, I don't wanna be looked as one of
the people on the bottom, you know?
I ain't no loser.
As soon as he was born everyone used to,
"Oh, my God. He gonna be another Shaq."
I knew he wasn't gonna be like Shaq.
He's too skinny for Shaq.
But he was just always tall.
I knew that he was gonna be big.
When he was born, I knew he was gonna be,
you know, a ten-pound baby.
You know what I mean?
I think I was just born
with a ball in my hands.
I can't remember
not being involved in basketball.
Like, I remember having
the little hoop you get as a kid.
I was, like, the best player,
but that was
always 'cause I was the tallest.
People would just throw the ball up to me,
and I'd go up and score.
Yeah!
High school, I just didn't care.
Whoo!
The grades, laziness. And a lot of it,
and I'mma be totally honest, it
it's it's it's my fault
for not being there
as much as I was supposed to be.
I remarried when Malik was four.
When his dad would come over,
I wouldn't tell him his dad was coming,
I didn't want him to get disappointed.
I knew how that felt with me. With my dad.
So, I would never tell him.
But when he came, oh, man.
You could just He loved
One time, he almost cried
and just hugged him.
You know, he just loved his dad so much.
My dad, like I say,
he was just out doing his own thing.
I I guess he was just
I don't know, just trying to find himself.
I really I really have no clue.
But, you know, I mean, it is what it is.
I mean, it's not like I have any
any hate toward him or anything.
No, like, I still love him. He loves me.
I mean, it's all good.
He had decent exposure.
It was just, you know,
the grades wasn't there.
So, now it's, you know,
the junior college route.
He don't know how good he can be.
And he hasn't
experienced enough yet to believe it.
So, sometimes I just feel like
I had to shake him to,
"Okay, get up. Okay, do this! Do this!"
- What?
- I'm talking about $245 for you.
- Okay. That's
- And then you quickly took it out
without thinking about
your bills that come in.
- Okay.
- That's what I'm trying to
You gotta learn to spread your money out.
I'mma jam his ass up about school.
I'mma jam his ass up about
not workin' hard enough on the court.
You're scorin' two points
in the game and your ass is 6'9"?
I'm gettin' on your ass.
A 6'6" fat dude cleaned your ass up.
And you won't even drive to the rack.
Dominate these motherfuckers, man.
- Don't I tell you this all the time?
- Yeah.
- Is this new?
- No.
Work out!
Stop giving people excuses to be like,
"Oh, no. He's lazy."
I'm tired of hearin' that.
No, bro. You got
You got This is on you.
This is on you.
You not workin' hard enough.
We're all for you, bro.
If we was against you, we'd make
you feel like it was okay to do that.
And not wanna get better.
If we was against you.
Dude, Coach Rob
looking for dudes to work out.
- I told him that.
- He a pro.
He ain't makin' no money right now.
He drivin' from Riverside every day.
He ain't makin' no money.
You should be,
"Hey, Coach Rob. Can I get some shots up?"
Forget NBA, I'm just talking about
six-figure guys playing overseas
and making money like that,
them dudes is like, "I'm get it in."
Everywhere you go,
you're gonna be asked, "You play ball?"
"You play ball?"
So, what are you gonna do with it?
It's a blessing. And a curse.
I always felt like I was
just an average guy.
I always knew I was, like,
better than other people,
but not like not like how they
not like how they told me how I was.
If he wanted to make it to the NBA,
he can make it to the NBA.
He still has no real idea
of how close he is
to bein' anywhere in the country
he wants to be.
Get out the truck.
Take a team trip.
- Did you find a spot?
- Yeah.
- Gotta get fools there.
- Figure out how to get there.
Or they get there on they own somehow.
Shaun's got three.
- I got three.
- Mm-hm.
- Erick, what kind of car you got?
- Versa.
- A Versa? That's a little car.
- Versa, yeah.
They are little,
but there's some good leg room in
- What year is it?
- They got leg room.
- You big ballin', man. You got the
- Yeah.
It works.
Yeah, it does.
You got a car that works.
We might have to throw
two or three in his.
I'll get the minivan, the swag wagon
and get You'll be in the minivan.
- I can get that.
- Yeah.
And then, uh
so that's eight seats right here.
The problem is
fools is 6'9" gettin' in your car.
- That's true.
- They all ain't like this.
- Yeah.
- Joe and Quis ain't gettin'
- in the back of a car.
- No.
- So, we'll practice and then go?
- Yep.
We felt like a field trip
was important.
I just think they need to see each other
away from basketball
and see each other in a different light,
see me in a different light.
They get a chance to be uncomfortable,
and the only comfort is each other.
So, that's similar to being on the court.
You know, once you get on the court,
it's just us.
I'm scared
of getting caught up by a bear.
- If we run into a bear, everybody's toast.
- For sure.
- I'm running for a hill.
- Everybody's toast. Whoever he picks.
A bear can run,
like, 20 miles an hour.
- That's crazy.
- Without breakin' stride.
You pullin' up in the woods
in a Beemer, man. Oh, my gosh.
- With the sunshades on, oh, yeah.
- With the sunshades.
I don't like
to bring attention to myself.
It's best that you follow,
because once you get up in there,
once you're up off the freeway,
it's different.
And then when you get close,
it's like a narrow road.
It's gonna look different.
So, it's probably
it's probably best to be together.
You gonna be, like, "I'm goin' home."
Wait a minute. Hold up.
- "Family" on three. One, two, three.
- Family.
Keep goin'.
You'll be like, "Ain't nothin' here."
Keep goin' until you see the cabin.
What y'all think
we about to do up there?
Some bullshit.
I seen how the nigga said
bring a pen or pencil.
I seen that too.
I was like, "We about to be
writing letters and shit again."
We up there for sure.
Goin' straight up.
We are in the hills for sure.
- Oh, my God.
- Oh, my God.
- We just goin' up.
- Where the fuck are we?
Look how high
that power line is.
Bro, what the fuck?
- I don't like this road.
- It's getting scary. I'm fake scared.
Ohhhh!
- Shit!
- Fire! ♪
- This is wildlife out here.
- Hell, yeah.
- Oh, shit.
- Oh
- No Don't go up there.
- Don't go up there.
That's somebody property.
Get your ass shot.
As soon as
we drove past the line.
"What are you niggers
doin' on my land?"
Oh, yes, sir.
- Yes, sir!
- Yes, sir!
We're safe.
- Look at Mo! "Aaaah!"
- He mad as shit. He mad as shit.
Look at his ass like, "I told them"
- Hurry up, park!
- "I told them niggas."
I told y'all
I told you to follow me, dawg.
Look, I told
- Where do I park, nigga?
- Look at your face.
- Aaaah!
- Hey, I told you to follow me.
This is why Black people
do not come camping.
- You ain't got sweats on or nothin'.
- Hell, no, I'm out here thugging.
Phew! That was somethin' there.
This is nice, though.
- Joe, take this stuff to the kitchen.
- Yup. Got you.
What the fuck? We on The Real World?
Is this Bad Girls Club?
- What's going on in this bitch?
- He said Bad Girls Club.
Ohh! And I don't got no service? No!
- Oh, my God, no service.
- Oh, you in trouble.
My Android work.
- He talking about, "My Android work."
- If y'all had an Android
- Let me call somebody. Let me see.
- Huh?
- Let me see yours.
- You ain't makin' no call. No.
- He ain't got no service.
