Making the Cut (2020) s01e05 Episode Script
Streetwear
1
Previously, on Making the Cut
You will create one look.
You will have seven hours.
The time crunch is real.
I have to fight for my life
at this point.
It's do or die.
As a model, that would be
my nightmare to have to model that outfit.
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
I don't think that
you should have done that pant.
I've had a problem with you
for every assignment.
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
They sent home two people.
We're shocked.
Even though it's kind of simple,
it's still a head-turner.
I loved your outfit today.
You are the winner today!
Pack your bags, because
we're going to Tokyo!
Fantastic!
###
# -I'm free
-I'm free #
# To be what I want to be #
Yes! I've never been to Asia.
I'm super excited.
I did not see Tokyo coming at all.
It was such a huge surprise.
The judges definitely shook us up this time.
# I'm free #
There's no city I'd rather go to
with this competition.
And I've never even dreamt
of showing there, like,
my mind is exploding right now.
The fact that I'm one in seven now,
and I'm closer to winning this competition?
Game on.
# I'm free #
###
Dans la rue á Tokyo.
Is that the song?
This is beautiful.
I lived in Tokyo, coming and going,
for nine years.
It's a happy place.
- Jonny, how do you feel in Tokyo?
- Over the moon.
Two people got sent home,
and now there's only seven of us.
Like, the competition is, like
like totally up a notch.
###
Wow!
This is gorgeous.
Wow!
Ooh, we have cutting tables!
Walking into
the Amazon Fashion Studio in Tokyo
is completely out of this world,
like, it's exciting,
like, we're halfway through making the cut.
And I want to push myself and I want to push
my brand even harder and stronger.
So, we're going to Harajuku, right?
Yeah, at Tokyo Plaza Hotel.
- Hi
- Heidi
My streetwear.
Oh! Oh, ha, ha!
What do you think?
- Not bad!
- Yeah?
Have a little spin.
Yes, sir!
And you look smart and stunning
in your streetwear.
- Thank you!
- I love it.
But you know what?
- What?
- I had a few accessories for you.
- This isn't good enough?
- No, no, no.
This is good. But we can always improve.
Aw, I mean, you are adorable.
- Really?
- Adorbs!
A fanny pack?
Yeah, but we don't wear this
anymore like that.
- How do we wear it?
- You wear it like this.
- It goes over the head?
- Yeah.
I would be afraid to let me
go anywhere like this.
And now what? Oh, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- These are hideous.
- I thought you were gonna say that.
Makin' the cut, makin' the cut,
makin' the cut, makin' the cut!
Makin' the fool, makin' the fool.
###
- Konichiwa!
- -Konichiwa.
Konichiwa!
Konichiwa, designers,
and welcome to Tokyo!
- Thank you!
- Yes! We made it!
Anyone wondering why I look like a fool?
Aww!
You look gorgeous.
Heidi Japanese-streetweared me.
Does he look like a fool,
or do you guys love it?
- We love it!
- See that? They love it!
So, we're on a whole new leg of this
incredible adventure that we're on together,
- which is pretty amazing.
- We're halfway through this competition.
- And halfway around the world.
- Yes.
And things are getting real.
Well, I don't have to remind you, there's
one million dollars on the line for you guys.
So, now, the details
about your next collection.
We are here at Tokyo Plaza,
just a stone's throw
from the winding back alleys of Harajuku.
It is the epicenter of Japanese streetwear.
Ergo, me.
Yay!
For your next fashion show,
we want you to create
a two-look streetwear mini collection.
One must be a showstopper.
The second look should be
a sellable interpretation of that look.
I am an old style designer.
My concept of streetwear may be very Italian.
This for me is going to be
a challenging assignment.
We couldn't come to Tokyo
and not create streetwear.
It has grown into a billion-dollar business.
Today, Japanese streetwear is known
for its mix of different styles and genres.
It is eclectic, fun, and experimental.
So, embrace all of that
when you're creating your designs.
And as you saw, you'll be working
out of Amazon Fashion's Tokyo studio.
It's exciting, because this is where
they photograph and style products.
Now, you also have the option
of fabric printing,
because a lot of streetwear
incorporates logos,
so, it's an opportunity to incorporate
your own logo into this.
The designer who creates
the winning collection
will have the opportunity to create
a limited-edition, co-branded look
with want to say it together?
Wait for it!
- Puma!
- Puma!
Yes!
So cool!
I'm thrilled that it's streetwear.
It's like, I've made streetwear for
my brand, 15 years.
I'm triple thrilled that the winner
can do a collaboration with Puma.
I'm, like, hungry for blood.
The limited edition looks
will be sold exclusively
in the Making the Cut store on Amazon.
- This is a huge opportunity for one of you.
- Absolutely.
Did you notice the escalator
that you guys rode up in?
Well, it's the location
for your next fashion show.
- Yes!
- Oh, wow.
This is gonna be so cool.
Right here at the famous Tokyo Plaza.
Okay, go explore Harajuku, and I'll see you
back here for your fashion show.
And we want to encourage you to find
a muse when you're out on the street.
And that muse can help enhance
what you're designing
and enhance your inspiration.
Have fun, and I'll see you
in your brand-new design studio.
- Okay?
- Thank you!
- Have fun, everyone.
- Have fun.
- Bye, guys!
- Have fun! - Bye!
Let's get it.
# Round and round #
# We make it, we make it #
# We'll safely demonstrate it #
# We fix it, we break it #
# We're simply complicated #
You know, I never do print, so I took
a photo of, like, all the flowers and trees,
I put it on the screen,
mirrored it real quick, put like
a crazy honeycomb in front of it.
I made the sickest print.
I made the sickest print.
Walking on Takeshita Street
was very nice,
because it was full of people.
The energy was there.
Hello! Hi! You speak English?
You speak English? No.
- Marseille.
- Marseille.
No!
- How are you?
- How are you?
My friend.
- From Paris.
- Yeah.
It was pretty amazing
that he was walking by chance
in a city of 20 million people.
It felt magic.
A small world.
Yes.
Ciao, bello. Bye-bye.
Unbelievable.
I have this great idea,
and I think that it will work.
Actually, it's a great inspiration.
My idea is to combine two elements,
which is jersey knit
with some chiffon.
So, I'm gonna make
a very sophisticated streetwear piece.
Initially, I was inspired
by the Japanese construction man,
and then all these Japanese hipsters,
and I started pulling elements.
I mean, it was very anti-fashion,
and, you know,
they don't really care about
what other people think.
They're out there to express who they are
and be who they are,
and that really touched me,
'cause my clothes are
those tools to help people be that way.
You know, I'm seeing all these prints,
and so, I'm kind of thinking of maybe finding
a fabric that has a print on it
that kind of brings out Harajuku
into like what I'm doing.
One of the looks, I want to do a twist
on a kimono,
but a street-style kimono.
Oh, my God!
###
Ahh!
I'm just so overwhelmed
by all the color and all the cuteness
in this cafe,
and I know I want to incorporate color
and this, like, sense of youthfulness.
This is everything I imagined
Japan to be.
Right?
It's just an overdose of colors,
of kitsch, of techie stuff.
###
I want to integrate
all these influences into my black universe.
I mean, I can do that, but it's tough.
Oh, my God.
That was, like, mortifying.
The moment I looked through
my pictures,
I colored them right away
into black and white.
And then I'm actually taking out
what I want for my two outfits.
Heidi says, "Don't bore us."
###
I found something that I truly love.
I found one fabric that is incredible,
that I was attracted by,
so I just bought 9 meters.
If I see something, I don't think.
I go with my heart.
Let's do it.
I've always dreamt
of coming to Harajuku.
I'm looking around, and I was like,
I'm thinking, I was like,
"Oh, Japanese streetstyle,"
and I'm like, I love the youthful spirit
that's captured here.
Wow.
That rebel spirit of youthful,
like, eclectic dressing.
Mmm! Oh, my God.
I'm feeling a little old right now, actually.
Yes! Yes!
###
Hello!
Hi, Ji!
This assignment would have been
the chance for me to finally
come up with some color,
because it's about Harajuku.
But I have my brand, and it works.
I will stick to my black,
but then make it a bit younger
to enlarge maybe the target group.
It's enough. Yeah.
It's enough. 6.5 is enough.
Hello!
Sabatino!
- Hello, Bebé!
- Guess who's back?
For this week, our inspiration
comes from Harajuku,
and we have the opportunity to create
our own prints inspired by our designs.
It has to be a two-look mini collection.
And it needs to be streetwear.
Ah! That's what I need.
The winning collection
will be able to do a collab with Puma,
which can help my brand in numerous ways.
- Hello!
- Hey, Esther.
- I'm happy you're next to me, babe.
- You know why it's so spacious?
It's because five tables are gone.
Yes.
This is really cool.
I'm bringing my own silhouettes,
mixing different fabrications in, like,
the same garment,
and I don't normally do that.
I don't, you know, use color,
and I don't use, like,
three different stripes in one garment.
So, this is, like, gonna be
a great challenge.
You know, I'm pushing my limits,
and I'm definitely stepping out
of the comfort zone
and embracing the discomfort here.
And I have a smile on my face.
Arigatou.
- Hi, Jonny!
- Boom! Let's do this!
# La la la la la la #
Konichiwa!
Ah!
This thing weighs more than me.
# La la la la la la #
# La la la la la la #
So, I'm doing this paper bag pant
- Ooh, I'm doing a paper bag pant too.
- Oh, my God!
Biyatch.
You doing the paper bag pant
with your print?
- No.
- Okay. So, I'm doing mine with a print.
Cool!
The print that I designed is super cool,
and it's super colorful,
so I'm balancing it out with black.
That will make it feel more me.
I'm hoping it looks super dope.
If it does, I'm good.
If it doesn't, I'm up creek.
# Show me what you can do #
We are in Tokyo!
We're at the fish market.
- And we're going to be adventurous.
- ready to be adventurous.
- I'm so excited to be here.
- I'll say.
I mean, just look at these oysters.
How are you swallowing this?
Well, if you're in search
of an aphrodisiac, that would last a year.
I mean, can we just talk about
the size of this oyster?
Go! Go! Go! Go!
No!
What is this? Oh, my God.
Blowfish!
And uni, I love uni.
- Uni is sea urchin, everyone.
- Have you ever had one of those?
- Yes.
- And did you like it?
That's a no.
- Have you ever dove for these?
- No.
You say, "Have you 'dove' for these,"
or "doven" for these?
- "Dived," I think.
- "Dived" for these?
He doesn't know!
- soybean.
- Ah.
I'll try one.
It's chewy, and it's sweet.
Oh, my gosh, look.
And everyone who loves Japanese,
and you always get edamame first?
- It's pretty.
- This is edamame, guys.
- Need a knife?
- Oh, good heavens.
This is perfect for us, because
we're shooting "Making the Cut."
Chop, chop, chop.
# Ooh #
# Ooh #
# Ooh #
- All the prints are here.
- Yay!
# On my knees like hallelujah #
# Enough to make me testify #
# Got me wrapped right round your finger #
Oooh! I love it!
- Oh, Sander!
- Ooh, it looks beautiful, Sander.
- I love it.
- Asian persuasion?
- Whoo!
- It's so cool! It's very graphic.
###
I like it. It's very simple.
Hmm
- You like it?
- I don't. It's a little feminine.
If it was a shirt, it would look cool,
but it's supposed to be a pair of pants.
This is stupid.
It looks like a Hawaiian vacation.
It doesn't look expensive.
I'm kind of freaking out.
I've got to re redesign this.
My God.
I'm not a streetwear kind of guy.
I don't know
No, I do in menswear,
yeah, much more.
You know, this assignment is, uh
challenging for me.
I have to do something.
About this streetwear,
I'm not used to streetwear,
and I'm struggling.
I feel very stressful.
I feel I cannot make a decision.
Oh! Looking pretty cute.
Like, I really forgot how you sew.
Kkkk, kkk, kkk.
Well, it's been a few days.
- Just let me sew in peace, please.
- Okay.
- Ooh!
- I love it.
Go for it.
Does this look like a skin disease
a little bit? It's a little bit acne.
- What was that?
- It's just lettin' out the demons.
# Got another catalogue #
I know people are expecting
a lot from me this assignment.
Streetwear this is my vibe.
I know there's going to be
a lot of eyes on me.
So, I'm feeling that pressure.
What I've learned in all of this
is to not freak out.
# I want to know what's Victoria's Secret #
# It feels alright but it can be wrong #
Side seam, shoulder, half an inch,
armhole this,
make that want me to explain more?
No, that's fine.
But I'm doing, like, a button-down shirt
that's made out of this color.
And my other look is my version of a kimono
meets a punk rock, puffer jacket,
bad-ass Japanese chick
and, God willing, everything will come back
okay from the seamstress.
Knock on some wood for me, please.
###
Who's here? This you?
Yeah, it's my mess.
I was panicking.
Did you notice?
- No, I wasn't watching you, but
- Oh, thank God.
I'm planning to leave the seamstress
one long, black jersey dress with a hood.
But I'm not here in the challenge right now.
I'm not.
My God.
He's kind of struggling,
and I can feel it.
I can see it in his body.
His shoulders are down.
It is not coming together.
I'm worried for him.
I'm very confused
about what to do.
Very confused.
# Into the night #
# Into the night #
Good morning!
O-hi-o!
Where's the seamstresses' work?
Oh, damn.
I'm up, I'm up.
I just need some coffee.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!
This is so dope. Yay!
She did it. She did it!
- J'adore !
- J'adore !
This is cool, bitch.
It's really nice.
- I love it!
- Are you wearing tap shoes?
This morning, I feel very good.
I'm very happy with the work
of the seamstress.
Today is going to be a fantastic day.
Ah! Look at this. Ah!
And this looks very traditional Japanese
with the pleats and stuff.
Yeah. It's amazing.
I really appreciate your work.
I appreciate your work too.
- Thank you.
- Even though it has no color in it.
# I raise my feet, I miss a beat
from my seat #
# Don't care, get off my back #
- Hi!
- Hello, hello, hello.
# So round it off, don't touch my stack #
- Can you try it on, actually?
- I'm gonna complain to the judges
- when you win. "I helped him!"
- I'll split the million dollars with you.
Oh my God, you think you're gonna win.
You're hilarious.
# Walk right through that door #
- Good morning, everyone.
- Morning!
I feel as though I've just walked through
a fabric shipwreck.
Good heavens. Wow.
Well, I'm here for our Tim talks, alright?
Let's do it.
Hi, Ji.
How's it going?
How are you doing?
I made this print out of
So, this is my name in Korean repeated,
so that it becomes a shape
rather than writing.
And I'm using color blocking
to create these two matching looks,
so, it's a bit of utility wear
mixed in with casual vibe,
and just, like, making it
really fun and youthful.
These pants it's just bringing in, like,
that element of utility, so,
you can snap these off, and then it becomes
like, her casual basketball shorts.
And then it's gonna have a sweatshirt on top
with this element also,
just like for the sleeves.
With these toggles of sorts to incorporate
that same element into the top,
- it just feels very matchy-matchy.
- Mm-hmm.
Since each look consists of separates,
these things can be mixed up,
as opposed to, "No, no,
you've got to wear that top
with that bottom."
- Okay.
- No, you really don't.
- Think about it.
- Okay.
Are you really alright?
You look like you're on the verge of tears.
Yeah. I don't know. I've just been, like,
second-guessing everything.
- You're thinking too much.
- I'm just really stressed about time.
Well, I can help relieve that by leaving.
- Thank you.
- Alright, Ji.
I'm feeling very, very stressed,
like the most stressed
I've felt this entire competition.
Yeah, I can see that there's still
some work to be done.
Which look would you say is
the more accessible?
- This one.
- Okay.
- The shirt's quite smashing.
- Thank you.
And then for this, this is like
a traditional kimono jacket
but then as if it, like, sunk down a little.
Oh, the arms are inside?
- Yeah, the arms are inside.
- Okay.
The print came out really well.
I think you have a print designer within you.
Awesome!
Esther, so, talk to me.
I want it to be really young
and sporty,
but still bear my signature as readable.
- How are you doing that?
- Working with these very encrusted details.
These are like a mix of sweatpants
and menswear pants.
Now you look concerned.
If there were ever an opportunity
to introduce color, it's this.
And I'm just I'm looking at, quite frankly,
a sea of black.
- Exactly.
- All these wonderful design details
that you have in the pant,
I just feel it all gets lost.
And I'm not denigrating the black.
It's just
you've been black on black
on black on black on black.
- But I have some white
- - Sorry.
Can't you see it?
You know my universe is so
it's so black and white.
And I want to stay true to myself.
It just seems that
it's a lost opportunity.
And particularly if I'm thinking
about investing a million dollars,
I want you to have as expansive
a customer base as you can have,
so, this is going to be important
in terms of who wins this.
Not just this particular fashion show,
but who wins the season.
I was inspired
by Japanese construction workers.
They were all wearing,
like, blue shirts with this color.
And then I saw a lot of people
wearing different shirts
with, like, mixed stripes,
different directions,
like an anti-fashion statement.
I don't normally play
with plaids and stripes.
- I think you should.
- I think I should too. Thank you.
- Yeah. I think this is a good
- It feels really good.
threshold for you.
And then, look number two
So, then, this is my version of kimono.
It's gonna have facing, don't worry.
- What in what?
- In the same print.
I'll be blunt.
I think you're missing an opportunity
when you say
you're going to face the collar of the coat
with the same fabric.
So, what do you recommend
that I face it with, then?
You're the designer.
I'm just putting that question out there.
- Okay.
- But you've got a lot of opportunity here.
Realize it.
Do more.
I'm feeling a little nervous, but
I don't know if it's jetlag or I'm tired.
But I know I'm in a competition here,
and I can't mess this up.
- So, the print, I did I took photos
- Oh, I'm crazy about your print. What is it?
Well, I took photos of the flowers
and the garden.
The color by itself was
too colorful for my palette.
So, on top of it will be this hoodie
and this organza.
Okay.
- I think it's gonna do something
quite interesting to the print. - Yeah.
So, my second outfit that I'm gonna use,
like some Japanese references,
and make these, like, goth ninjas.
What are the Japanese references?
Well, this is kind of a, like a kimono top
but I cut off the sleeves.
I would wear this,
and I'd feel quite cool in it.
Can I tell you something very bluntly?
- You
- Yeah.
head to toe, look cooler than this.
- I'm fine with this top
- Okay.
- It's this.
- This is buggin'.
Yeah. This should be your fashion show.
I know.
You could be a billion-dollar brand.
And this is your opportunity
to demonstrate that.
The expectations now couldn't be higher.
- As well they should be.
There are only seven of you. -Yeah.
I'm a little nervous. If I want to become
the winner of this whole damn thing,
I need to stand out every single assignment.
I feel like the eyes are on me
twice as much now.
So, if anyone in this room is
the anti-streetwear designer, it's you.
- Right.
- So, how are you handling this?
I was thinking, what is really streetwear?
How you perceive street?
You know, I just saw my friend in Harajuku.
He was super avant-garde.
So, Harajuku for me is avant-garde.
I'm gonna follow my heart.
Well it pulls at my heartstrings that.
- Oh, wow.
- This wows me.
This is a breakthrough for you.
This looks like a risk-taking woman
who doesn't give a shit.
- Right.
- And it's an "a-ha" moment for me, saying,
"Good heavens, Sabato has so much more
up his sleeve."
- Yeah.
- But, by comparison, this disappoints me.
I feel as though you went to Sabato Couture
and took this off the rack.
I mean, it's a beautiful look.
- I just don't see
- The two together. -Yeah.
Tim has always a very good opinion,
but I'm really happy
with this black jersey dress.
So, I have to make a decision.
Alright, everyone, I can't wait to see
where all this ends up.
Have a good afternoon. Thank you.
- Thank you!
- Bye, Tim! - Bye.
# I need deliverance #
What am I doing?
# If you are to come and set me free #
I feel like the jet lag
and the traveling
is definitely weighing on a lot of people.
You know, this design process,
to having to be creative
night after night, it's a lot.
I don't know if I'm, like, starving
or if I have to throw up.
That's how I've been feeling
since we got here.
What have you been eating
since we got here?
French fries.
That might be why.
It was an intense talk.
I didn't come here to change
the DNA of my brand.
I decided to stick to black.
This is so much my home,
and that's why I'm happy
sticking to my universe.
Sorry.
So, I'm fine, no matter
what the judges will say.
I'm really fine with what I'm doing.
I'm tired.
Oh, bloody hell!
Mercy. Come on.
Based on my Tim talk, I'm frantically sewing
a full pair of pants.
I just have a few hours left,
and I have so much to do.
- Hi, guys!
- Hi!
Hi, nice to meet you.
Hello, beautiful.
Oh, my God, you guys are so beautiful.
Maybe we try what I have on both quickly.
One goes there okay?
# We're doin' what we like #
Yeah, I love it.
# We're doin' what we like #
# We don't apologize #
Oh, I like how it looks on you both.
Can you both do one by one?
I pushed myself,
and I used two different prints
in this one puffer.
Cool.
My goal is to show the judges that
I'm capable of being the next global brand.
# A million-dollar life #
- Perfect.
- There we go. Okay.
I don't know yet if I'm going
to have you wear this or you wear it,
so, I'm just gonna fit you both.
- I love it. - Me too.
- No, look in the back.
No, it's great.
Before you, Tim said
that the striped dress was "wow."
Okay, honey, I have a doubt about this dress.
It didn't work. I don't feel it.
It's not me.
# This is a million-dollar life #
Oh, it looks really good.
- Yeah, good.
- Thank you so much. Bye-bye.
We will see each other tomorrow.
Arigatou. See you tomorrow.
Jonny. The black dress on her
was absolutely stunning.
- The other dress
- Yeah.
- You're keeping it?
- No.
- Isn't that the one that Tim loved?
- So what?
I love it. Tim told you one was great
and one sucked, and you did the opposite.
- Who cares? No, I'm serious.
- Jonny
- You don't have to prove it to me.
- If you see that dress on
Harajuku is not that. I say sayonara.
I do a long tunic, and I'm gonna put
the print of my fabric that I did yesterday
in the hood and, basta.
End of the story.
You guys ready to leave?
So many pieces you did.
I gave her one, but I gave her a full piece
from beginning to end.
Fantastic.
I mean, I'm an idiot, I'll tell you that.
It's going to be really difficult
to finish in time.
So, I'm handing off the entire hoodie
made out of silk organza for the seamstress,
which is a super big gamble.
But I'm hopeful.
I mean, please finish this for me.
###
Morning!
Good morning!
- Yo!
- Konichiwa.
Fantastico!
- You love it?
- Love it.
- Chantique. That means beautiful
- I love it. Look at this.
Loving it.
Oh. Oh. Oh.
That is not a sleeve. That is not a hoodie.
So, I open up my garment bag,
and it's all in pieces.
- What'd she not do?
- It's in pieces!
I was hoping to have this, like,
beautiful silk organza hoodie,
and it's like, the sleeves
aren't even on it.
It's screwed up!
I told her to just cut the goddamned thing.
You know, it's like, I have an hour.
I knew giving a full garment was a bad idea.
- I just got to sew on this pocket.
- Okay.
That's perfect. Thank you.
Okay. Turn around
Tim suggested that I switch the two tops
Love it on you.
but it looks better the original way, so,
I think I'm gonna keep it the way it is.
I'm gonna be right back.
I just have to finish your hat.
# Ohhh #
Love it.
I'm happy. Totally me, clean, simple, clean,
pure very happy.
Can we keep one arm out and one,
like, can have the thumb hanging out?
Yeah. Looks dope.
- Sorry, Ji.
- Sorry.
Okay. Oh, my God.
I don't know if I can sew this.
- Rinat, are you totally finished?
- You need something?
- Can you just help me press my sleeve
- Yeah. -that I just put in?
I'm completely aware
this is a competition,
but, you know, that's what friends are for.
I just sewed the junkiest sleeve
in the world.
- Want me to press everything in?
- Press it in.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah.
- Tell me if you holler if you
- I'm good.
Fifteen minutes.
Okay
# I keep my mind on my money #
# Never made no promises #
# Don't want no honey #
# Tell me what you need #
Okay, put your arm back down slowly.
I think it looks cool.
- You have to understand and really think
if it's avant-gardish. - Ahh!
I added a little bit of
Harajuku girls' freaky style with the hair.
Yeah, that's cool. I really like the hair.
It's like the total look I'm doing.
The hats, I'm doing the garments,
I'm doing shoes,
and this is all my universe.
Here.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Jonny was struggling.
He also got a lot of help.
Rinat helped him.
Which I'm okay with, but in some kind of way,
I also think, like,
if it would have not been
for somebody else's kindness,
you wouldn't have been able
to finish it in time.
- We got this, guys.
- Come on. Come on.
- Let's do it, alright?
- You guys look great.
Let's go!
Let's go.
# Open your eyes and look at what you have #
# What you have #
# You've got to love me for who I am #
# Open your eyes and look at what you have #
Just lift your shoulders a little bit.
Put the hood on.
We pulled it off.
# Open your eyes and look at what you have #
- You're good.
- The left one, like, yeah.
- You guys look great.
- Okay, bon courage.
# Let's live for tomorrow #
- This is gonna be fun.
- I know.
# Have the time of our lives #
Yoo hoo!
Welcome to our fashion show at Tokyo Plaza.
We are in the heart of Harajuku.
And, appropriately, this is
a streetwear fashion show.
The models will descend the escalator
and pose here on the street.
And streetwear is a huge part
of Tokyo fashion.
And we're excited to kick off
the first part of our journey right here,
with street style.
I'll say.
Streetwear is a billion-dollar business.
Heidi and I thought it was very important
for our designers
to experience this very robust market.
So, for this fashion show, each designer
created a two-look streetwear collection.
And the winner will get the opportunity
to create a co-branded look with Puma!
How amazing is that?
What an opportunity for them.
Amazing!
And I have to say, I had
a little sneak peek already up there,
and it's looking very good.
- I'm always happy when Heidi's happy.
- I'm happy.
Alright, let us introduce you
to our lovely judges.
We have a new judge on the panel.
Digital entrepreneur
and, according to "Forbes" magazine,
the most famous fashion influencer
in the world, Chiara Ferragni.
Ooh!
Can you believe this?
Over 17 million followers.
- This is amazing.
- It is.
- Thank you so much for being here.
- Thank you. I'm so excited to be here.
We're honored to have you here.
Chiara Ferragni is an icon in Italy.
She's super famous.
She was one of the original influencers
of this world, which is crazy.
CFDA Award winner and creative director
of Altuzarra, Joseph Altuzarra.
Welcome.
Supermodel and fashion icon
Naomi Campbell.
###
Stand here.
###
I really like the utility wear.
I love the cut out details.
- She used her imagination.
- It's a little bit expected, in a way.
- But it's still cool.
- I think it looks great.
###
Now that I'm seeing it, I really
understand why mixing it up didn't work.
Mm-hmm.
I think that print looks like
it's in Korean.
- It feels like Tokyo to me.
- Oh, definitely.
I love it.
I'm so curious to see what Esther did.
How are you feeling?
- Good.
- Good.
How amazing is this hat?
It's hair or a hat?
- No, that's a hat.
- It's fantastic. Love it.
Buy that in two seconds flat.
It's nice, because I think it's a version
of the little black dress
- that everybody wants and wears.
- Yeah.
It feels like she really took her brand
and interpreted the idea of street there.
Yes. I just wish
she would have used some color.
- Are you happy?
- I'm very happy with it.
- Good, you should be.
- Are you happy? -Yes.
Oh, wow.
I love the cut.
You see hints of Japan.
I don't call it streetwear, no.
I don't know how sellable
this necessarily is.
Is it almost too avant-garde?
- It's a fantasy, though, and I love it.
- It is so beautiful.
See you around.
I'll be waiting for my millions.
This I love.
The print underneath is very cool.
I think the print makes the black
look blacker.
Yeah, I think it works.
The cargo pants are good as well.
I love the shear sleeves. It's great.
I'd wear this whole outfit.
# Ain't no time to play, yeah #
# War, war, war #
# War, war
This ain't a game, this ain't a game #
They definitely look very cool.
It looks very relaxed, easy, yeah.
Well, I was crying this morning
trying to finish it.
- Whatever it takes.
- Blood, sweat, and tears. -Yeah.
# This ain't a game, this ain't a game
This ain't a game, game #
This is beautiful.
I don't know
if I'm into the skirt.
She went bold on the print.
I like the skirt, but I don't like it paired
with this top, though.
- Another bold print.
- Good.
- I like that more than the first look.
- Me too.
- I love the print on the pants.
- I like the whole outfit.
- And I love the red.
- I like the pants a lot.
- That's gothy.
- Ooh.
I appreciate that he took his DNA
and kept it.
What happened to that textile?
It wasn't street.
I totally disagree.
- That was my favorite look
out of the entire design studio. -Oh!
He played it safe.
I prefer this over the first look.
You can definitely see this is Sabato.
I mean, he's true to his design aesthetic.
This is street to me. It's simple.
If you think about streetwear,
you don't think about something like that.
I'm just disappointed to not see what
I really thought was a Sabato revolution.
Well
- I think the shirt looks
- Smashing.
I like how the pockets in the front
are kind of off and big.
The patchworking is really nice.
And I like that there's
a touch of punk.
This is adorable.
Yes! Rinat stepped it up!
# Break it down #
- This is so nice.
- I'd wear all of this.
- I love the print.
- I love the fishnet. -I love it.
- Your collection really stands out.
- Thank you.
I love the outfit. Gorge.
- Great work.
- Thank you, Tim.
Thank you, everyone, for coming
to our streetwear fashion show.
I feel nervous.
Maybe I should have listened to Tim.
Tim was totally disappointed.
I have no idea how the judges will react.
# Not intentionally #
# I'm not trying to break this thing #
# But I break it over again #
# But intentionally #
Going into elimination,
I think it's a little nerve-wracking,
just because I want to show the judges
that I am the next global brand.
- Hello!
- Hi!
What a show today.
No, the applause is for you guys.
I don't know why you're clapping for us.
We have to clap for you guys.
Obviously, you guys know Naomi and Joseph.
Carine and Nicole
won't be joining us in Japan,
but Nicole will be back for the finale.
We're very excited to have
a new judge with us. Welcome, Chiara.
Chiara, ciao! Come stai?
I'm so excited to be here.
You guys did such an amazing job.
- Grazie. -Okay, you guys,
that fashion show was amazing.
We can tell that you were so inspired
by your new surroundings.
And we're really dreading
having to send someone home.
One of the winner's looks
will be immediately available on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
And the winner will also have the opportunity
to create a co-branded look with Puma!
- Wow!
- Which will also be sold on Amazon.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next great global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that will ride the escalator.
We discussed each
of your two-look collections.
We have thoughts and some questions
for some of you.
We want to know what you're all about
and how you want to run your business.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
And as you know,
a conversation can change everything.
Sander, you can stay where you are.
We're not going to talk to you today.
But, I have to say, we did love your looks.
They were absolutely incredible.
But they were not really that accessible.
You know? We feel like you didn't really
give us a sellable version.
I understand that. I see that.
Thank you, guys.
Rinat, we want to talk to you today.
Rinat in the hot seat!
Tell us about your collection.
For my first look, I was inspired
by the Japanese construction worker.
And then when I went to Cat Street,
I saw, like, all these different shirts
with stripes going different directions
mixed with tie dye, mixed with plaid
and all, like, chains coming down.
It was a very, like,
anti-fashion statement for me.
Really expressing themselves to the fullest
and not caring what other people think.
I love both of your looks.
- I love them too.
- Yeah.
I love how they were
very masculine but tomboyish,
and they are super cool.
My brand is gender-free,
so I make clothes for any gender,
any body type.
And this is my this is like my first time
in a long time using color.
I really went out of my comfort zone,
and it feels good.
The only thing I have to say,
I don't know if I could tell
that that was you necessarily.
I'm still trying to figure out who you are.
- Like most people.
- And what your brand is all about.
I think that's going to be difficult.
Heidi, we told her last week
that she had to step it up.
- No, she stepped it up.
- So, she stepped it up.
- You stepped it up.
- Thank you.
- But now, we have to decipher who she is.
- Yeah.
It was a perfect alchemy
of something that felt Japanese,
and I could see how you got inspired,
but also really felt like
something you would do.
So, I think you kind of ticked
all of the boxes for me.
I thought it was actually a postman,
but it's a construction worker.
I thought it was a Japanese postman,
but you hit all the targets for me also.
I know how to fly.
Okay, Rinat.
- Stay there.
- Okay.
Alright, Jonny, why don't you come forward?
- Hi there.
- Hi.
- Am I coming Am I joining her?
- Join the hot seat.
- Hi.
- Hi.
We loved the two collections
but couldn't decide who should win.
So, we want to hear from you both.
Jonny, please tell us about your collection.
I'm kind of, like, dressing them
like little Jonny Cotas.
I was just like, I'm just going to make them
like little versions of me,
'cause this is my dream of coming here
and wearing streetwear in Tokyo.
I love the first outfit. I'd wear it.
The sheer jacket.
It's black, but then you love
the colors coming through.
Proportions of the pants,
the jacket, the underneath,
the tattoos everything worked.
And yet it was so simple.
- Did you make the print underneath?
- I did make the print.
I love the print,
because it kind of made it sweet, in a way.
- Yeah.
- -Which I like,
because, otherwise,
everything is hard, hard, hard.
I was really impressed
with your looks.
The idea was there.
It was such a modern take on streetwear.
I love these looks.
I like both of them so much.
I loved the head piece.
It was really smart.
All of my friends will wear them.
My followers, most of them,
I think, will really wear them.
It's definitely tough, because
both of you did such a great job.
Yeah, I feel that, like, you guys asked to do
Harajuku-inspired assignments,
and I feel like I really took in
the assignment
and applied what you guys asked for
into that,
instead of sticking with the dark colors
that I'm used to staying with.
You know, I, like, went through so much
in my life to get to where I am right now,
and I'm so appreciative just to be here
and speak with you guys.
I took a risk, and it feels good.
I came here to hopefully get the exposure
to work with a brand like Puma.
I was inspired by Puma.
I was inspired by showing them
a strong voice
that they thought would be the perfect brand
to partner up with for collaboration.
Judges, who should win?
I'm picking Rinat.
I loved yours too.
But I just loved hers a little bit more.
I actually want to pick Jonny.
You get such a strong sense of who Jonny is
and what his brand is about.
- And I also really want to buy it.
- Thank you.
I pick Rinat as well.
Since the first time I saw her creations
I didn't know, like, your past creations,
but these ones were super eye catchy.
Now it's all up to Ms. Naomi Campbell.
Rinat.
But, Jonny, you were
a very, very close second for me.
Rinat, you are the winner.
Your coat will be immediately available
on Amazon in the Making the Cut store.
And you have the opportunity to create
a co-branded look with Puma,
which will also be available
immediately on Amazon.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you.
Whoo!
Oh, my God, I feel so happy.
I'm just like
I'm just, like, shocked that, like
my garment's going to be on Amazon,
and then, like, I'm doing this collaboration
with this multi-billion-dollar company.
Everybody knows who Puma is.
This is, like, unbelievable.
Esther, we'd like to talk to you next.
- Hello.
- Hello.
Hi!
Alright, Esther, tell us
about your collection.
So, I took the advantage of this assignment
to discover if I would be able to break down
my very significant style language
into a sportswear collection,
because I haven't done this before.
And as an inspiration, they made me go
to this, uh, monster cafe.
- So, they put
- Who? What do you mean? Them?
Yeah. And I said okay.
So, I went in this very colorful
monster cafe.
Monster cafe.
I took a lot of pictures and turned
what I saw into my universe,
so I switched all the pictures
into black and white.
I wanted to see how a sportswear collection
by Esther would look like.
This idea of strange things happening here
made me do this top
where the sleeve's coming out of a place.
Usually a sleeve doesn't come off.
So, this twisting, playing, but then
still very architectural, very squared,
which is a signature of me.
That's the result what we saw.
I find it very interesting that you go
to one of the most colorful places in Tokyo
but you still bring it back to black.
- You know, there is
- Yeah.
I wish you would have kind of branched out
into the color just a little bit,
or with a print, you know, that you guys
were able to create this time,
so I'm a little sad that you didn't use
that opportunity.
But I have to say, I did love
the pieces that you made.
I loved the flat-front pant, but, you know,
you have it singed in the back,
so, I thought that was really smart.
I just wish there was some color in there!
I do agree with Heidi
that there should be some color,
because you've got to think
of your customer first.
You limit yourself.
Just showing black doesn't work
for everybody.
Especially when
you are shopping now online,
where I feel like black is always harder
to see and understand.
There is gonna come a point
as you grow, for all of you,
when you're going to be faced with,
"Do I compromise my vision
to grow my business?"
And sometimes the right answer is yes,
and sometimes the right answer is no.
I'm not rejecting color.
I just feel like that needs to be
my decision.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Esther
you're making the cut.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I sort of expected
that it would happen today,
because the last two days, I was
forced to defend my black universe.
But I didn't come here to change
the DNA of my brand.
Okay. Sabato.
It's been an incredibly challenging
assignment.
Also because for me to come back to Japan,
it opened a lot of emotion.
Because I'd been living here. I missed Japan.
I didn't come for over 18 years.
All this emotion come out.
And, um
It's where I started as a designer.
I really struggled. I really struggled.
So, I made this dress that Tim loved it.
- And, uh
- A dress that we did not see?
- Yes. And Tim loved it.
- And why did we not see it?
- It did not look good, so, you know
- Tim, do you think it didn't look good?
In many ways, regarding that look,
the message to me was,
"This is an additional dimension
of vision that I have,"
and for me, it was profound.
Profound.
And I understand what happened,
but I really am saying this more
to the judges.
There's so much here.
Thank you.
From the very first day when I met you,
when you showed us, you know,
- your pieces that you brought
- I remember.
I fell in love with you immediately
with your clothes, with you as a person.
But I have to say, today, I was like,
"Boy, oh boy, what is he sending
down the runway today?"
It was this goth girl
that was like I'm like, "Who are you?"
"What is happening all of a sudden?"
You know?
This black mouth and, like
- It was not good today, Sabato.
- I know.
It wasn't up to what we expect of you.
It felt like you were really in your head.
They did not flow naturally.
It felt inauthentic,
and it didn't feel like
the best of what you've done.
Naomi, what do you think?
I don't know what to say.
The whole situation is sad to me.
I understand it's not your forte.
I didn't like either dress.
Streetwear is not for everyone.
This one, this assignment was not for you.
And it's I'm just sad,
because I don't want to see you go.
Sabato, based on what we saw
from you today
- you're not making the cut.
- Okay.
I was not able to put it on the runway today.
I agree with you.
I came here beaten already by myself.
I would like to show you more of my vision.
And there is so much inside me
that I still have to express.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
- I haven't.
- You have not?
- Chiara?
- I haven't.
I haven't either.
Sabato
I'm sorry, but you're not making the cut.
- I'm so sorry.
- That's okay.
- Bebé.
- Ciao, Bebé.
- I'm coming to sleep on your couch.
- Of course. -I'll miss you.
I'm leaving the competition.
I know my mistakes. I accept them.
But I'm leaving as a winner,
- We're going to miss you terribly.
-because I felt
so much love,
from everybody.
It's not easy to say goodbye to someone.
It's stressful.
This could happen to all of us,
that you just don't make the right decision,
and then it's over.
We're past the time of getting
a second chance.
They're looking for someone
who can lead the next global fashion brand.
We have to grow past our comfort zones.
That was horrible.
Rinat's Puma look is available
in the Making the Cut store.

Previously, on Making the Cut
You will create one look.
You will have seven hours.
The time crunch is real.
I have to fight for my life
at this point.
It's do or die.
As a model, that would be
my nightmare to have to model that outfit.
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
I don't think that
you should have done that pant.
I've had a problem with you
for every assignment.
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
They sent home two people.
We're shocked.
Even though it's kind of simple,
it's still a head-turner.
I loved your outfit today.
You are the winner today!
Pack your bags, because
we're going to Tokyo!
Fantastic!
###
# -I'm free
-I'm free #
# To be what I want to be #
Yes! I've never been to Asia.
I'm super excited.
I did not see Tokyo coming at all.
It was such a huge surprise.
The judges definitely shook us up this time.
# I'm free #
There's no city I'd rather go to
with this competition.
And I've never even dreamt
of showing there, like,
my mind is exploding right now.
The fact that I'm one in seven now,
and I'm closer to winning this competition?
Game on.
# I'm free #
###
Dans la rue á Tokyo.
Is that the song?
This is beautiful.
I lived in Tokyo, coming and going,
for nine years.
It's a happy place.
- Jonny, how do you feel in Tokyo?
- Over the moon.
Two people got sent home,
and now there's only seven of us.
Like, the competition is, like
like totally up a notch.
###
Wow!
This is gorgeous.
Wow!
Ooh, we have cutting tables!
Walking into
the Amazon Fashion Studio in Tokyo
is completely out of this world,
like, it's exciting,
like, we're halfway through making the cut.
And I want to push myself and I want to push
my brand even harder and stronger.
So, we're going to Harajuku, right?
Yeah, at Tokyo Plaza Hotel.
- Hi
- Heidi
My streetwear.
Oh! Oh, ha, ha!
What do you think?
- Not bad!
- Yeah?
Have a little spin.
Yes, sir!
And you look smart and stunning
in your streetwear.
- Thank you!
- I love it.
But you know what?
- What?
- I had a few accessories for you.
- This isn't good enough?
- No, no, no.
This is good. But we can always improve.
Aw, I mean, you are adorable.
- Really?
- Adorbs!
A fanny pack?
Yeah, but we don't wear this
anymore like that.
- How do we wear it?
- You wear it like this.
- It goes over the head?
- Yeah.
I would be afraid to let me
go anywhere like this.
And now what? Oh, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- These are hideous.
- I thought you were gonna say that.
Makin' the cut, makin' the cut,
makin' the cut, makin' the cut!
Makin' the fool, makin' the fool.
###
- Konichiwa!
- -Konichiwa.
Konichiwa!
Konichiwa, designers,
and welcome to Tokyo!
- Thank you!
- Yes! We made it!
Anyone wondering why I look like a fool?
Aww!
You look gorgeous.
Heidi Japanese-streetweared me.
Does he look like a fool,
or do you guys love it?
- We love it!
- See that? They love it!
So, we're on a whole new leg of this
incredible adventure that we're on together,
- which is pretty amazing.
- We're halfway through this competition.
- And halfway around the world.
- Yes.
And things are getting real.
Well, I don't have to remind you, there's
one million dollars on the line for you guys.
So, now, the details
about your next collection.
We are here at Tokyo Plaza,
just a stone's throw
from the winding back alleys of Harajuku.
It is the epicenter of Japanese streetwear.
Ergo, me.
Yay!
For your next fashion show,
we want you to create
a two-look streetwear mini collection.
One must be a showstopper.
The second look should be
a sellable interpretation of that look.
I am an old style designer.
My concept of streetwear may be very Italian.
This for me is going to be
a challenging assignment.
We couldn't come to Tokyo
and not create streetwear.
It has grown into a billion-dollar business.
Today, Japanese streetwear is known
for its mix of different styles and genres.
It is eclectic, fun, and experimental.
So, embrace all of that
when you're creating your designs.
And as you saw, you'll be working
out of Amazon Fashion's Tokyo studio.
It's exciting, because this is where
they photograph and style products.
Now, you also have the option
of fabric printing,
because a lot of streetwear
incorporates logos,
so, it's an opportunity to incorporate
your own logo into this.
The designer who creates
the winning collection
will have the opportunity to create
a limited-edition, co-branded look
with want to say it together?
Wait for it!
- Puma!
- Puma!
Yes!
So cool!
I'm thrilled that it's streetwear.
It's like, I've made streetwear for
my brand, 15 years.
I'm triple thrilled that the winner
can do a collaboration with Puma.
I'm, like, hungry for blood.
The limited edition looks
will be sold exclusively
in the Making the Cut store on Amazon.
- This is a huge opportunity for one of you.
- Absolutely.
Did you notice the escalator
that you guys rode up in?
Well, it's the location
for your next fashion show.
- Yes!
- Oh, wow.
This is gonna be so cool.
Right here at the famous Tokyo Plaza.
Okay, go explore Harajuku, and I'll see you
back here for your fashion show.
And we want to encourage you to find
a muse when you're out on the street.
And that muse can help enhance
what you're designing
and enhance your inspiration.
Have fun, and I'll see you
in your brand-new design studio.
- Okay?
- Thank you!
- Have fun, everyone.
- Have fun.
- Bye, guys!
- Have fun! - Bye!
Let's get it.
# Round and round #
# We make it, we make it #
# We'll safely demonstrate it #
# We fix it, we break it #

You know, I never do print, so I took
a photo of, like, all the flowers and trees,
I put it on the screen,
mirrored it real quick, put like
a crazy honeycomb in front of it.
I made the sickest print.
I made the sickest print.
Walking on Takeshita Street
was very nice,
because it was full of people.
The energy was there.
Hello! Hi! You speak English?
You speak English? No.
- Marseille.
- Marseille.
No!
- How are you?
- How are you?
My friend.
- From Paris.
- Yeah.
It was pretty amazing
that he was walking by chance
in a city of 20 million people.
It felt magic.
A small world.
Yes.
Ciao, bello. Bye-bye.
Unbelievable.
I have this great idea,
and I think that it will work.
Actually, it's a great inspiration.
My idea is to combine two elements,
which is jersey knit
with some chiffon.
So, I'm gonna make
a very sophisticated streetwear piece.
Initially, I was inspired
by the Japanese construction man,
and then all these Japanese hipsters,
and I started pulling elements.
I mean, it was very anti-fashion,
and, you know,
they don't really care about
what other people think.
They're out there to express who they are
and be who they are,
and that really touched me,
'cause my clothes are
those tools to help people be that way.
You know, I'm seeing all these prints,
and so, I'm kind of thinking of maybe finding
a fabric that has a print on it
that kind of brings out Harajuku
into like what I'm doing.
One of the looks, I want to do a twist
on a kimono,
but a street-style kimono.
Oh, my God!
###
Ahh!
I'm just so overwhelmed
by all the color and all the cuteness
in this cafe,
and I know I want to incorporate color
and this, like, sense of youthfulness.
This is everything I imagined
Japan to be.
Right?
It's just an overdose of colors,
of kitsch, of techie stuff.
###
I want to integrate
all these influences into my black universe.
I mean, I can do that, but it's tough.
Oh, my God.
That was, like, mortifying.
The moment I looked through
my pictures,
I colored them right away
into black and white.
And then I'm actually taking out
what I want for my two outfits.
Heidi says, "Don't bore us."
###
I found something that I truly love.
I found one fabric that is incredible,
that I was attracted by,
so I just bought 9 meters.
If I see something, I don't think.
I go with my heart.
Let's do it.
I've always dreamt
of coming to Harajuku.
I'm looking around, and I was like,
I'm thinking, I was like,
"Oh, Japanese streetstyle,"
and I'm like, I love the youthful spirit
that's captured here.
Wow.
That rebel spirit of youthful,
like, eclectic dressing.
Mmm! Oh, my God.
I'm feeling a little old right now, actually.
Yes! Yes!
###
Hello!
Hi, Ji!
This assignment would have been
the chance for me to finally
come up with some color,
because it's about Harajuku.
But I have my brand, and it works.
I will stick to my black,
but then make it a bit younger
to enlarge maybe the target group.
It's enough. Yeah.
It's enough. 6.5 is enough.
Hello!
Sabatino!
- Hello, Bebé!
- Guess who's back?
For this week, our inspiration
comes from Harajuku,
and we have the opportunity to create
our own prints inspired by our designs.
It has to be a two-look mini collection.
And it needs to be streetwear.
Ah! That's what I need.
The winning collection
will be able to do a collab with Puma,
which can help my brand in numerous ways.
- Hello!
- Hey, Esther.
- I'm happy you're next to me, babe.
- You know why it's so spacious?
It's because five tables are gone.
Yes.
This is really cool.
I'm bringing my own silhouettes,
mixing different fabrications in, like,
the same garment,
and I don't normally do that.
I don't, you know, use color,
and I don't use, like,
three different stripes in one garment.
So, this is, like, gonna be
a great challenge.
You know, I'm pushing my limits,
and I'm definitely stepping out
of the comfort zone
and embracing the discomfort here.
And I have a smile on my face.
Arigatou.
- Hi, Jonny!
- Boom! Let's do this!
# La la la la la la #
Konichiwa!
Ah!
This thing weighs more than me.
# La la la la la la #
# La la la la la la #
So, I'm doing this paper bag pant
- Ooh, I'm doing a paper bag pant too.
- Oh, my God!
Biyatch.
You doing the paper bag pant
with your print?
- No.
- Okay. So, I'm doing mine with a print.
Cool!
The print that I designed is super cool,
and it's super colorful,
so I'm balancing it out with black.
That will make it feel more me.
I'm hoping it looks super dope.
If it does, I'm good.
If it doesn't, I'm up creek.
# Show me what you can do #
We are in Tokyo!
We're at the fish market.
- And we're going to be adventurous.
- ready to be adventurous.
- I'm so excited to be here.
- I'll say.
I mean, just look at these oysters.
How are you swallowing this?
Well, if you're in search
of an aphrodisiac, that would last a year.
I mean, can we just talk about
the size of this oyster?
Go! Go! Go! Go!
No!
What is this? Oh, my God.
Blowfish!
And uni, I love uni.
- Uni is sea urchin, everyone.
- Have you ever had one of those?
- Yes.
- And did you like it?
That's a no.
- Have you ever dove for these?
- No.
You say, "Have you 'dove' for these,"
or "doven" for these?
- "Dived," I think.
- "Dived" for these?
He doesn't know!
- soybean.
- Ah.
I'll try one.
It's chewy, and it's sweet.
Oh, my gosh, look.
And everyone who loves Japanese,
and you always get edamame first?
- It's pretty.
- This is edamame, guys.
- Need a knife?
- Oh, good heavens.
This is perfect for us, because
we're shooting "Making the Cut."
Chop, chop, chop.
# Ooh #
# Ooh #
# Ooh #
- All the prints are here.
- Yay!
# On my knees like hallelujah #
# Enough to make me testify #
# Got me wrapped right round your finger #
Oooh! I love it!
- Oh, Sander!
- Ooh, it looks beautiful, Sander.
- I love it.
- Asian persuasion?
- Whoo!
- It's so cool! It's very graphic.
###
I like it. It's very simple.
Hmm
- You like it?
- I don't. It's a little feminine.
If it was a shirt, it would look cool,
but it's supposed to be a pair of pants.
This is stupid.
It looks like a Hawaiian vacation.
It doesn't look expensive.
I'm kind of freaking out.
I've got to re redesign this.
My God.
I'm not a streetwear kind of guy.
I don't know
No, I do in menswear,
yeah, much more.
You know, this assignment is, uh
challenging for me.
I have to do something.
About this streetwear,
I'm not used to streetwear,
and I'm struggling.
I feel very stressful.
I feel I cannot make a decision.
Oh! Looking pretty cute.
Like, I really forgot how you sew.
Kkkk, kkk, kkk.
Well, it's been a few days.
- Just let me sew in peace, please.
- Okay.
- Ooh!
- I love it.
Go for it.
Does this look like a skin disease
a little bit? It's a little bit acne.
- What was that?
- It's just lettin' out the demons.
# Got another catalogue #
I know people are expecting
a lot from me this assignment.
Streetwear this is my vibe.
I know there's going to be
a lot of eyes on me.
So, I'm feeling that pressure.
What I've learned in all of this
is to not freak out.
# I want to know what's Victoria's Secret #
# It feels alright but it can be wrong #
Side seam, shoulder, half an inch,
armhole this,
make that want me to explain more?
No, that's fine.
But I'm doing, like, a button-down shirt
that's made out of this color.
And my other look is my version of a kimono
meets a punk rock, puffer jacket,
bad-ass Japanese chick
and, God willing, everything will come back
okay from the seamstress.
Knock on some wood for me, please.
###
Who's here? This you?
Yeah, it's my mess.
I was panicking.
Did you notice?
- No, I wasn't watching you, but
- Oh, thank God.
I'm planning to leave the seamstress
one long, black jersey dress with a hood.
But I'm not here in the challenge right now.
I'm not.
My God.
He's kind of struggling,
and I can feel it.
I can see it in his body.
His shoulders are down.
It is not coming together.
I'm worried for him.
I'm very confused
about what to do.
Very confused.
# Into the night #
# Into the night #
Good morning!
O-hi-o!
Where's the seamstresses' work?
Oh, damn.
I'm up, I'm up.
I just need some coffee.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!
This is so dope. Yay!
She did it. She did it!
- J'adore !
- J'adore !
This is cool, bitch.
It's really nice.
- I love it!
- Are you wearing tap shoes?
This morning, I feel very good.
I'm very happy with the work
of the seamstress.
Today is going to be a fantastic day.
Ah! Look at this. Ah!
And this looks very traditional Japanese
with the pleats and stuff.
Yeah. It's amazing.
I really appreciate your work.
I appreciate your work too.
- Thank you.
- Even though it has no color in it.
# I raise my feet, I miss a beat
from my seat #
# Don't care, get off my back #
- Hi!
- Hello, hello, hello.
# So round it off, don't touch my stack #
- Can you try it on, actually?
- I'm gonna complain to the judges
- when you win. "I helped him!"
- I'll split the million dollars with you.
Oh my God, you think you're gonna win.
You're hilarious.
# Walk right through that door #
- Good morning, everyone.
- Morning!
I feel as though I've just walked through
a fabric shipwreck.
Good heavens. Wow.
Well, I'm here for our Tim talks, alright?
Let's do it.
Hi, Ji.
How's it going?
How are you doing?
I made this print out of
So, this is my name in Korean repeated,
so that it becomes a shape
rather than writing.
And I'm using color blocking
to create these two matching looks,
so, it's a bit of utility wear
mixed in with casual vibe,
and just, like, making it
really fun and youthful.
These pants it's just bringing in, like,
that element of utility, so,
you can snap these off, and then it becomes
like, her casual basketball shorts.
And then it's gonna have a sweatshirt on top
with this element also,
just like for the sleeves.
With these toggles of sorts to incorporate
that same element into the top,
- it just feels very matchy-matchy.
- Mm-hmm.
Since each look consists of separates,
these things can be mixed up,
as opposed to, "No, no,
you've got to wear that top
with that bottom."
- Okay.
- No, you really don't.
- Think about it.
- Okay.
Are you really alright?
You look like you're on the verge of tears.
Yeah. I don't know. I've just been, like,
second-guessing everything.
- You're thinking too much.
- I'm just really stressed about time.
Well, I can help relieve that by leaving.
- Thank you.
- Alright, Ji.
I'm feeling very, very stressed,
like the most stressed
I've felt this entire competition.
Yeah, I can see that there's still
some work to be done.
Which look would you say is
the more accessible?
- This one.
- Okay.
- The shirt's quite smashing.
- Thank you.
And then for this, this is like
a traditional kimono jacket
but then as if it, like, sunk down a little.
Oh, the arms are inside?
- Yeah, the arms are inside.
- Okay.
The print came out really well.
I think you have a print designer within you.
Awesome!
Esther, so, talk to me.
I want it to be really young
and sporty,
but still bear my signature as readable.
- How are you doing that?
- Working with these very encrusted details.
These are like a mix of sweatpants
and menswear pants.
Now you look concerned.
If there were ever an opportunity
to introduce color, it's this.
And I'm just I'm looking at, quite frankly,
a sea of black.
- Exactly.
- All these wonderful design details
that you have in the pant,
I just feel it all gets lost.
And I'm not denigrating the black.
It's just
you've been black on black
on black on black on black.
- But I have some white
- - Sorry.
Can't you see it?
You know my universe is so
it's so black and white.
And I want to stay true to myself.
It just seems that
it's a lost opportunity.
And particularly if I'm thinking
about investing a million dollars,
I want you to have as expansive
a customer base as you can have,
so, this is going to be important
in terms of who wins this.
Not just this particular fashion show,
but who wins the season.
I was inspired
by Japanese construction workers.
They were all wearing,
like, blue shirts with this color.
And then I saw a lot of people
wearing different shirts
with, like, mixed stripes,
different directions,
like an anti-fashion statement.
I don't normally play
with plaids and stripes.
- I think you should.
- I think I should too. Thank you.
- Yeah. I think this is a good
- It feels really good.
threshold for you.
And then, look number two
So, then, this is my version of kimono.
It's gonna have facing, don't worry.
- What in what?
- In the same print.
I'll be blunt.
I think you're missing an opportunity
when you say
you're going to face the collar of the coat
with the same fabric.
So, what do you recommend
that I face it with, then?
You're the designer.
I'm just putting that question out there.
- Okay.
- But you've got a lot of opportunity here.
Realize it.
Do more.
I'm feeling a little nervous, but
I don't know if it's jetlag or I'm tired.
But I know I'm in a competition here,
and I can't mess this up.
- So, the print, I did I took photos
- Oh, I'm crazy about your print. What is it?
Well, I took photos of the flowers
and the garden.
The color by itself was
too colorful for my palette.
So, on top of it will be this hoodie
and this organza.
Okay.
- I think it's gonna do something
quite interesting to the print. - Yeah.
So, my second outfit that I'm gonna use,
like some Japanese references,
and make these, like, goth ninjas.
What are the Japanese references?
Well, this is kind of a, like a kimono top
but I cut off the sleeves.
I would wear this,
and I'd feel quite cool in it.
Can I tell you something very bluntly?
- You
- Yeah.
head to toe, look cooler than this.
- I'm fine with this top
- Okay.
- It's this.
- This is buggin'.
Yeah. This should be your fashion show.
I know.
You could be a billion-dollar brand.
And this is your opportunity
to demonstrate that.
The expectations now couldn't be higher.
- As well they should be.
There are only seven of you. -Yeah.
I'm a little nervous. If I want to become
the winner of this whole damn thing,
I need to stand out every single assignment.
I feel like the eyes are on me
twice as much now.
So, if anyone in this room is
the anti-streetwear designer, it's you.
- Right.
- So, how are you handling this?
I was thinking, what is really streetwear?
How you perceive street?
You know, I just saw my friend in Harajuku.
He was super avant-garde.
So, Harajuku for me is avant-garde.
I'm gonna follow my heart.
Well it pulls at my heartstrings that.
- Oh, wow.
- This wows me.
This is a breakthrough for you.
This looks like a risk-taking woman
who doesn't give a shit.
- Right.
- And it's an "a-ha" moment for me, saying,
"Good heavens, Sabato has so much more
up his sleeve."
- Yeah.
- But, by comparison, this disappoints me.
I feel as though you went to Sabato Couture
and took this off the rack.
I mean, it's a beautiful look.
- I just don't see
- The two together. -Yeah.
Tim has always a very good opinion,
but I'm really happy
with this black jersey dress.
So, I have to make a decision.
Alright, everyone, I can't wait to see
where all this ends up.
Have a good afternoon. Thank you.
- Thank you!
- Bye, Tim! - Bye.
# I need deliverance #
What am I doing?
# If you are to come and set me free #
I feel like the jet lag
and the traveling
is definitely weighing on a lot of people.
You know, this design process,
to having to be creative
night after night, it's a lot.
I don't know if I'm, like, starving
or if I have to throw up.
That's how I've been feeling
since we got here.
What have you been eating
since we got here?
French fries.
That might be why.
It was an intense talk.
I didn't come here to change
the DNA of my brand.
I decided to stick to black.
This is so much my home,
and that's why I'm happy
sticking to my universe.
Sorry.
So, I'm fine, no matter
what the judges will say.
I'm really fine with what I'm doing.
I'm tired.
Oh, bloody hell!
Mercy. Come on.
Based on my Tim talk, I'm frantically sewing
a full pair of pants.
I just have a few hours left,
and I have so much to do.
- Hi, guys!
- Hi!
Hi, nice to meet you.
Hello, beautiful.
Oh, my God, you guys are so beautiful.
Maybe we try what I have on both quickly.
One goes there okay?
# We're doin' what we like #
Yeah, I love it.
# We're doin' what we like #
# We don't apologize #
Oh, I like how it looks on you both.
Can you both do one by one?
I pushed myself,
and I used two different prints
in this one puffer.
Cool.
My goal is to show the judges that
I'm capable of being the next global brand.
# A million-dollar life #
- Perfect.
- There we go. Okay.
I don't know yet if I'm going
to have you wear this or you wear it,
so, I'm just gonna fit you both.
- I love it. - Me too.
- No, look in the back.
No, it's great.
Before you, Tim said
that the striped dress was "wow."
Okay, honey, I have a doubt about this dress.
It didn't work. I don't feel it.
It's not me.
# This is a million-dollar life #
Oh, it looks really good.
- Yeah, good.
- Thank you so much. Bye-bye.
We will see each other tomorrow.
Arigatou. See you tomorrow.
Jonny. The black dress on her
was absolutely stunning.
- The other dress
- Yeah.
- You're keeping it?
- No.
- Isn't that the one that Tim loved?
- So what?
I love it. Tim told you one was great
and one sucked, and you did the opposite.
- Who cares? No, I'm serious.
- Jonny
- You don't have to prove it to me.
- If you see that dress on
Harajuku is not that. I say sayonara.
I do a long tunic, and I'm gonna put
the print of my fabric that I did yesterday
in the hood and, basta.
End of the story.
You guys ready to leave?
So many pieces you did.
I gave her one, but I gave her a full piece
from beginning to end.
Fantastic.
I mean, I'm an idiot, I'll tell you that.
It's going to be really difficult
to finish in time.
So, I'm handing off the entire hoodie
made out of silk organza for the seamstress,
which is a super big gamble.
But I'm hopeful.
I mean, please finish this for me.
###
Morning!
Good morning!
- Yo!
- Konichiwa.
Fantastico!
- You love it?
- Love it.
- Chantique. That means beautiful
- I love it. Look at this.
Loving it.
Oh. Oh. Oh.
That is not a sleeve. That is not a hoodie.
So, I open up my garment bag,
and it's all in pieces.
- What'd she not do?
- It's in pieces!
I was hoping to have this, like,
beautiful silk organza hoodie,
and it's like, the sleeves
aren't even on it.
It's screwed up!
I told her to just cut the goddamned thing.
You know, it's like, I have an hour.
I knew giving a full garment was a bad idea.
- I just got to sew on this pocket.
- Okay.
That's perfect. Thank you.
Okay. Turn around
Tim suggested that I switch the two tops
Love it on you.
but it looks better the original way, so,
I think I'm gonna keep it the way it is.
I'm gonna be right back.
I just have to finish your hat.
# Ohhh #
Love it.
I'm happy. Totally me, clean, simple, clean,
pure very happy.
Can we keep one arm out and one,
like, can have the thumb hanging out?
Yeah. Looks dope.
- Sorry, Ji.
- Sorry.
Okay. Oh, my God.
I don't know if I can sew this.
- Rinat, are you totally finished?
- You need something?
- Can you just help me press my sleeve
- Yeah. -that I just put in?
I'm completely aware
this is a competition,
but, you know, that's what friends are for.
I just sewed the junkiest sleeve
in the world.
- Want me to press everything in?
- Press it in.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah.
- Tell me if you holler if you
- I'm good.
Fifteen minutes.
Okay
# I keep my mind on my money #
# Never made no promises #
# Don't want no honey #
# Tell me what you need #
Okay, put your arm back down slowly.
I think it looks cool.
- You have to understand and really think
if it's avant-gardish. - Ahh!
I added a little bit of
Harajuku girls' freaky style with the hair.
Yeah, that's cool. I really like the hair.
It's like the total look I'm doing.
The hats, I'm doing the garments,
I'm doing shoes,
and this is all my universe.
Here.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Jonny was struggling.
He also got a lot of help.
Rinat helped him.
Which I'm okay with, but in some kind of way,
I also think, like,
if it would have not been
for somebody else's kindness,
you wouldn't have been able
to finish it in time.
- We got this, guys.
- Come on. Come on.
- Let's do it, alright?
- You guys look great.
Let's go!
Let's go.
# Open your eyes and look at what you have #
# What you have #
# You've got to love me for who I am #
# Open your eyes and look at what you have #
Just lift your shoulders a little bit.
Put the hood on.
We pulled it off.
# Open your eyes and look at what you have #
- You're good.
- The left one, like, yeah.
- You guys look great.
- Okay, bon courage.
# Let's live for tomorrow #
- This is gonna be fun.
- I know.
# Have the time of our lives #
Yoo hoo!
Welcome to our fashion show at Tokyo Plaza.
We are in the heart of Harajuku.
And, appropriately, this is
a streetwear fashion show.
The models will descend the escalator
and pose here on the street.
And streetwear is a huge part
of Tokyo fashion.
And we're excited to kick off
the first part of our journey right here,
with street style.
I'll say.
Streetwear is a billion-dollar business.
Heidi and I thought it was very important
for our designers
to experience this very robust market.
So, for this fashion show, each designer
created a two-look streetwear collection.
And the winner will get the opportunity
to create a co-branded look with Puma!
How amazing is that?
What an opportunity for them.
Amazing!
And I have to say, I had
a little sneak peek already up there,
and it's looking very good.
- I'm always happy when Heidi's happy.
- I'm happy.
Alright, let us introduce you
to our lovely judges.
We have a new judge on the panel.
Digital entrepreneur
and, according to "Forbes" magazine,
the most famous fashion influencer
in the world, Chiara Ferragni.
Ooh!
Can you believe this?
Over 17 million followers.
- This is amazing.
- It is.
- Thank you so much for being here.
- Thank you. I'm so excited to be here.
We're honored to have you here.
Chiara Ferragni is an icon in Italy.
She's super famous.
She was one of the original influencers
of this world, which is crazy.
CFDA Award winner and creative director
of Altuzarra, Joseph Altuzarra.
Welcome.
Supermodel and fashion icon
Naomi Campbell.
###
Stand here.
###
I really like the utility wear.
I love the cut out details.
- She used her imagination.
- It's a little bit expected, in a way.
- But it's still cool.
- I think it looks great.
###
Now that I'm seeing it, I really
understand why mixing it up didn't work.
Mm-hmm.
I think that print looks like
it's in Korean.
- It feels like Tokyo to me.
- Oh, definitely.
I love it.
I'm so curious to see what Esther did.
How are you feeling?
- Good.
- Good.
How amazing is this hat?
It's hair or a hat?
- No, that's a hat.
- It's fantastic. Love it.
Buy that in two seconds flat.
It's nice, because I think it's a version
of the little black dress
- that everybody wants and wears.
- Yeah.
It feels like she really took her brand
and interpreted the idea of street there.
Yes. I just wish
she would have used some color.
- Are you happy?
- I'm very happy with it.
- Good, you should be.
- Are you happy? -Yes.
Oh, wow.
I love the cut.
You see hints of Japan.
I don't call it streetwear, no.
I don't know how sellable
this necessarily is.
Is it almost too avant-garde?
- It's a fantasy, though, and I love it.
- It is so beautiful.
See you around.
I'll be waiting for my millions.
This I love.
The print underneath is very cool.
I think the print makes the black
look blacker.
Yeah, I think it works.
The cargo pants are good as well.
I love the shear sleeves. It's great.
I'd wear this whole outfit.
# Ain't no time to play, yeah #
# War, war, war #
# War, war
This ain't a game, this ain't a game #
They definitely look very cool.
It looks very relaxed, easy, yeah.
Well, I was crying this morning
trying to finish it.
- Whatever it takes.
- Blood, sweat, and tears. -Yeah.
# This ain't a game, this ain't a game
This ain't a game, game #
This is beautiful.
I don't know
if I'm into the skirt.
She went bold on the print.
I like the skirt, but I don't like it paired
with this top, though.
- Another bold print.
- Good.
- I like that more than the first look.
- Me too.
- I love the print on the pants.
- I like the whole outfit.
- And I love the red.
- I like the pants a lot.
- That's gothy.
- Ooh.
I appreciate that he took his DNA
and kept it.
What happened to that textile?
It wasn't street.
I totally disagree.
- That was my favorite look
out of the entire design studio. -Oh!
He played it safe.
I prefer this over the first look.
You can definitely see this is Sabato.
I mean, he's true to his design aesthetic.
This is street to me. It's simple.
If you think about streetwear,
you don't think about something like that.
I'm just disappointed to not see what
I really thought was a Sabato revolution.
Well
- I think the shirt looks
- Smashing.
I like how the pockets in the front
are kind of off and big.
The patchworking is really nice.
And I like that there's
a touch of punk.
This is adorable.
Yes! Rinat stepped it up!
# Break it down #
- This is so nice.
- I'd wear all of this.
- I love the print.
- I love the fishnet. -I love it.
- Your collection really stands out.
- Thank you.
I love the outfit. Gorge.
- Great work.
- Thank you, Tim.
Thank you, everyone, for coming
to our streetwear fashion show.
I feel nervous.
Maybe I should have listened to Tim.
Tim was totally disappointed.
I have no idea how the judges will react.
# Not intentionally #
# I'm not trying to break this thing #
# But I break it over again #
# But intentionally #
Going into elimination,
I think it's a little nerve-wracking,
just because I want to show the judges
that I am the next global brand.
- Hello!
- Hi!
What a show today.
No, the applause is for you guys.
I don't know why you're clapping for us.
We have to clap for you guys.
Obviously, you guys know Naomi and Joseph.
Carine and Nicole
won't be joining us in Japan,
but Nicole will be back for the finale.
We're very excited to have
a new judge with us. Welcome, Chiara.
Chiara, ciao! Come stai?
I'm so excited to be here.
You guys did such an amazing job.
- Grazie. -Okay, you guys,
that fashion show was amazing.
We can tell that you were so inspired
by your new surroundings.
And we're really dreading
having to send someone home.
One of the winner's looks
will be immediately available on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
And the winner will also have the opportunity
to create a co-branded look with Puma!
- Wow!
- Which will also be sold on Amazon.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next great global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that will ride the escalator.
We discussed each
of your two-look collections.
We have thoughts and some questions
for some of you.
We want to know what you're all about
and how you want to run your business.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
And as you know,
a conversation can change everything.
Sander, you can stay where you are.
We're not going to talk to you today.
But, I have to say, we did love your looks.
They were absolutely incredible.
But they were not really that accessible.
You know? We feel like you didn't really
give us a sellable version.
I understand that. I see that.
Thank you, guys.
Rinat, we want to talk to you today.
Rinat in the hot seat!
Tell us about your collection.
For my first look, I was inspired
by the Japanese construction worker.
And then when I went to Cat Street,
I saw, like, all these different shirts
with stripes going different directions
mixed with tie dye, mixed with plaid
and all, like, chains coming down.
It was a very, like,
anti-fashion statement for me.
Really expressing themselves to the fullest
and not caring what other people think.
I love both of your looks.
- I love them too.
- Yeah.
I love how they were
very masculine but tomboyish,
and they are super cool.
My brand is gender-free,
so I make clothes for any gender,
any body type.
And this is my this is like my first time
in a long time using color.
I really went out of my comfort zone,
and it feels good.
The only thing I have to say,
I don't know if I could tell
that that was you necessarily.
I'm still trying to figure out who you are.
- Like most people.
- And what your brand is all about.
I think that's going to be difficult.
Heidi, we told her last week
that she had to step it up.
- No, she stepped it up.
- So, she stepped it up.
- You stepped it up.
- Thank you.
- But now, we have to decipher who she is.
- Yeah.
It was a perfect alchemy
of something that felt Japanese,
and I could see how you got inspired,
but also really felt like
something you would do.
So, I think you kind of ticked
all of the boxes for me.
I thought it was actually a postman,
but it's a construction worker.
I thought it was a Japanese postman,
but you hit all the targets for me also.
I know how to fly.
Okay, Rinat.
- Stay there.
- Okay.
Alright, Jonny, why don't you come forward?
- Hi there.
- Hi.
- Am I coming Am I joining her?
- Join the hot seat.
- Hi.
- Hi.
We loved the two collections
but couldn't decide who should win.
So, we want to hear from you both.
Jonny, please tell us about your collection.
I'm kind of, like, dressing them
like little Jonny Cotas.
I was just like, I'm just going to make them
like little versions of me,
'cause this is my dream of coming here
and wearing streetwear in Tokyo.
I love the first outfit. I'd wear it.
The sheer jacket.
It's black, but then you love
the colors coming through.
Proportions of the pants,
the jacket, the underneath,
the tattoos everything worked.
And yet it was so simple.
- Did you make the print underneath?
- I did make the print.
I love the print,
because it kind of made it sweet, in a way.
- Yeah.
- -Which I like,
because, otherwise,
everything is hard, hard, hard.
I was really impressed
with your looks.
The idea was there.
It was such a modern take on streetwear.
I love these looks.
I like both of them so much.
I loved the head piece.
It was really smart.
All of my friends will wear them.
My followers, most of them,
I think, will really wear them.
It's definitely tough, because
both of you did such a great job.
Yeah, I feel that, like, you guys asked to do
Harajuku-inspired assignments,
and I feel like I really took in
the assignment
and applied what you guys asked for
into that,
instead of sticking with the dark colors
that I'm used to staying with.
You know, I, like, went through so much
in my life to get to where I am right now,
and I'm so appreciative just to be here
and speak with you guys.
I took a risk, and it feels good.
I came here to hopefully get the exposure
to work with a brand like Puma.
I was inspired by Puma.
I was inspired by showing them
a strong voice
that they thought would be the perfect brand
to partner up with for collaboration.
Judges, who should win?
I'm picking Rinat.
I loved yours too.
But I just loved hers a little bit more.
I actually want to pick Jonny.
You get such a strong sense of who Jonny is
and what his brand is about.
- And I also really want to buy it.
- Thank you.
I pick Rinat as well.
Since the first time I saw her creations
I didn't know, like, your past creations,
but these ones were super eye catchy.
Now it's all up to Ms. Naomi Campbell.
Rinat.
But, Jonny, you were
a very, very close second for me.
Rinat, you are the winner.
Your coat will be immediately available
on Amazon in the Making the Cut store.
And you have the opportunity to create
a co-branded look with Puma,
which will also be available
immediately on Amazon.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you.
Whoo!
Oh, my God, I feel so happy.
I'm just like
I'm just, like, shocked that, like
my garment's going to be on Amazon,
and then, like, I'm doing this collaboration
with this multi-billion-dollar company.
Everybody knows who Puma is.
This is, like, unbelievable.
Esther, we'd like to talk to you next.
- Hello.
- Hello.
Hi!
Alright, Esther, tell us
about your collection.
So, I took the advantage of this assignment
to discover if I would be able to break down
my very significant style language
into a sportswear collection,
because I haven't done this before.
And as an inspiration, they made me go
to this, uh, monster cafe.
- So, they put
- Who? What do you mean? Them?
Yeah. And I said okay.
So, I went in this very colorful
monster cafe.
Monster cafe.
I took a lot of pictures and turned
what I saw into my universe,
so I switched all the pictures
into black and white.
I wanted to see how a sportswear collection
by Esther would look like.
This idea of strange things happening here
made me do this top
where the sleeve's coming out of a place.
Usually a sleeve doesn't come off.
So, this twisting, playing, but then
still very architectural, very squared,
which is a signature of me.
That's the result what we saw.
I find it very interesting that you go
to one of the most colorful places in Tokyo
but you still bring it back to black.
- You know, there is
- Yeah.
I wish you would have kind of branched out
into the color just a little bit,
or with a print, you know, that you guys
were able to create this time,
so I'm a little sad that you didn't use
that opportunity.
But I have to say, I did love
the pieces that you made.
I loved the flat-front pant, but, you know,
you have it singed in the back,
so, I thought that was really smart.
I just wish there was some color in there!
I do agree with Heidi
that there should be some color,
because you've got to think
of your customer first.
You limit yourself.
Just showing black doesn't work
for everybody.
Especially when
you are shopping now online,
where I feel like black is always harder
to see and understand.
There is gonna come a point
as you grow, for all of you,
when you're going to be faced with,
"Do I compromise my vision
to grow my business?"
And sometimes the right answer is yes,
and sometimes the right answer is no.
I'm not rejecting color.
I just feel like that needs to be
my decision.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Esther
you're making the cut.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I sort of expected
that it would happen today,
because the last two days, I was
forced to defend my black universe.
But I didn't come here to change
the DNA of my brand.
Okay. Sabato.
It's been an incredibly challenging
assignment.
Also because for me to come back to Japan,
it opened a lot of emotion.
Because I'd been living here. I missed Japan.
I didn't come for over 18 years.
All this emotion come out.
And, um
It's where I started as a designer.
I really struggled. I really struggled.
So, I made this dress that Tim loved it.
- And, uh
- A dress that we did not see?
- Yes. And Tim loved it.
- And why did we not see it?
- It did not look good, so, you know
- Tim, do you think it didn't look good?
In many ways, regarding that look,
the message to me was,
"This is an additional dimension
of vision that I have,"
and for me, it was profound.
Profound.
And I understand what happened,
but I really am saying this more
to the judges.
There's so much here.
Thank you.
From the very first day when I met you,
when you showed us, you know,
- your pieces that you brought
- I remember.
I fell in love with you immediately
with your clothes, with you as a person.
But I have to say, today, I was like,
"Boy, oh boy, what is he sending
down the runway today?"
It was this goth girl
that was like I'm like, "Who are you?"
"What is happening all of a sudden?"
You know?
This black mouth and, like
- It was not good today, Sabato.
- I know.
It wasn't up to what we expect of you.
It felt like you were really in your head.
They did not flow naturally.
It felt inauthentic,
and it didn't feel like
the best of what you've done.
Naomi, what do you think?
I don't know what to say.
The whole situation is sad to me.
I understand it's not your forte.
I didn't like either dress.
Streetwear is not for everyone.
This one, this assignment was not for you.
And it's I'm just sad,
because I don't want to see you go.
Sabato, based on what we saw
from you today
- you're not making the cut.
- Okay.
I was not able to put it on the runway today.
I agree with you.
I came here beaten already by myself.
I would like to show you more of my vision.
And there is so much inside me
that I still have to express.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
- I haven't.
- You have not?
- Chiara?
- I haven't.
I haven't either.
Sabato
I'm sorry, but you're not making the cut.
- I'm so sorry.
- That's okay.
- Bebé.
- Ciao, Bebé.
- I'm coming to sleep on your couch.
- Of course. -I'll miss you.
I'm leaving the competition.
I know my mistakes. I accept them.
But I'm leaving as a winner,
- We're going to miss you terribly.
-because I felt
so much love,
from everybody.
It's not easy to say goodbye to someone.
It's stressful.
This could happen to all of us,
that you just don't make the right decision,
and then it's over.
We're past the time of getting
a second chance.
They're looking for someone
who can lead the next global fashion brand.
We have to grow past our comfort zones.
That was horrible.
Rinat's Puma look is available
in the Making the Cut store.
