Out With Dad (2010) s01e05 Episode Script

Blind Date with Nathan

For the record, I didn't ask Johnny to set me up on this blind date.
Neither did I I think he likes playing matchmaker.
I actually was gonna cancel because I hate these things so much.
Why is that? Well, it's the routine, you know ? It's like there's this checklist to check-up out.
I have a confession to make.
I haven't been on a first date in longer than I care to admit.
Oh? I have a proposal: what do you say we just run through the checklist quickly, and get it over with.
And then maybe we can actually relax and - have a nice time.
- Sounds good! I'll start.
What is the first item on the list? Um Occupation.
It's easy, freelance graphic designer.
And I actually love my job.
Realtor.
Also love my job.
Travel? - Does the camping count as travel? - Absolutely.
Then yes.
You? I love to travel.
Been doing a lot of it since I've been divorced.
Which leads us to: divorced, 3 years.
Widowed, um 15 years.
Oh.
I'm sorry.
I didn't know.
Of course I didn't know.
How would I know? Could you please just stop me? Sometimes I go on on autopilot - and make a fool of myself.
- It's OK! What is the next item on the list? It must be "children", right? One daughter, 15 years old.
I have a daughter, she is 17 going on 20-something.
And a son who's 10.
He's the center of his own little world.
Their dad? Is he part of their lives? Not as much as we'd like.
He married his boyfriend and moved to Vancouver.
Wow! Hmm Wow! That's one I haven't heard before.
Well, it certainly makes for good conversation.
I'm sure! So your daughter has never had much of a mother figure in her life? I'm sorry, have I strayed too far off the checklist? No.
Her grandmother has been the most, you could say, maternal woman in her life.
That's my mother-in-law.
When Sarah died, her folks moved to Toronto to be closer.
But now that Rose has gotten older, and they've gotten older, they moved back to the Parry Sound area.
Rose? That's a really pretty name.
What? Something's bothering her, and she won't tell me what.
Boy troubles? I know my Carly is going through that.
Mind you, she's been going through this since she was fourteen.
Oh, I've touched the chord, haven't I? It is a boy, right? Is it sex? I can understand how that would be a mother/daughter jurisdiction.
I know my son is screwed in that area.
No, it's not that.
It's sort of is.
Spill.
I think Rose might be gay.
I was not expecting that.
Well, she hasn't said anything, or even hinted.
And it's driving me insane because I don't know how, or even if, I should talk to her about it.
Is there a girl? I think maybe her best friend.
That's how it was for Roger, my ex.
They had known each other years before I was ever in the picture.
Then about four-five years ago, Aidan came out.
Deep down, I think I knew the instant Roger told me.
His eyes were just so sad, and after that everything was just different.
It was over like a year before Roger even admitted it to himself.
Worst year of our lives.
You know, I always thought Aidan had it in for me.
Turns out, he was just jealous.
He was our best man at our wedding, for godsakes.
He couldn't even look me in the eyes, that day.
I'm sorry, there I go again, just blabbing away! No it's alright.
That's That's a lot of weight to carry around, I'm sure.
Oh, it's not that.
It's the irony of the situation.
I was their best man at their wedding.
I know, I know, it's funny! I know, laugh! Hey, Blossom! Hi, Dad.
Rose, what's wrong? Can you come pick me up from the party? Is everything alright? Is there an emergency? No I I'm just not really having a good time.
Sweetie I'm sorry.
I've had a couple of drinks.
I can't drive.
Where are you? I'm on a streetcar.
I'm I'm on my way home.
I was just out on a out for a couple of drinks.
With a, um friend.
Do you have any money? Yeah.
Call a taxi and go home.
I'll, uh I'm not far.
I might even be home before you are.
Rose? OK.
I love you.
I love you too, Daddy.
