Project Blue Book (2019) s01e05 Episode Script
Foo Fighters
1 Previously on "Project Blue Book" Pilot there by the name of Henry Fuller claims to have gotten into a dogfight with an alien spacecraft.
I wasn't in control.
The light flew it for me.
Everybody else thinks I'm crazy.
MIMI: Someone's been following me.
There was a man at the hardware store and then I saw him again at the end of the driveway.
Who are you? And why are you following me? It's very important that I speak to your husband.
Is this about Allen's work? Is this about Blue Book? Look, your husband's in danger.
We're all in danger! [Siren wailing.]
[Thunder rumbles.]
[Siren wailing.]
OFFICER DAVIS: Sir! Come out of there! - [Car door shuts.]
- He's still back there? Yeah, I've tried reasoning with him.
But it's like he's in a whole other world.
Sir, you can't be in there! It's dangerous! That antenna's private property of this radio station.
Sir, you're trespassing and causing a public safety issue.
You're the ones in danger! I can give you to the count of three before we 3, 42, 11, 76, 79! Write those down! Write 'em down! It'll save your lives! 3, 42, 11, 76, 79! Stop! Hey! Get back here.
Hey, you're gonna get electrocuted! OFFICER DAVIS: Get down from there! Now! [Electricity zapping.]
Give me the flashlight.
OFFICER DAVIS: You see him? HYNEK: He got away again? The local law enforcement isn't equipped to handle this situation.
Well, what exactly is the situation? Should we be worried he's coming back? HARDING: Lieutenant Fuller left the base in North Dakota with no money and no resources, no family contacts.
We're going to find him.
Well, he's already crossed four states, broken into my house, escaped the police twice.
What I want to know is, what is so important that he can only talk to me? And how do we know we're safe now? Well, we'll be happy to post someone outside as a precaution.
HARDING: The most important thing is right now, you remain quiet.
Fuller is an Air Force issue.
And we'd prefer to resolve this inhouse.
So in the meantime, we just keep the events between us.
VALENTINE: The other witness that night.
Susie? We should probably talk with her as well, then.
Well, I can give you her number.
Would you? - It's in the kitchen.
- Thank you.
Excuse us, please.
[Clears throat.]
Professor, Fuller traveled a long way to get here.
Are you're really telling me you don't know why? I'm as confused as you are.
Could there have been anything you may have left out of your initial report? Anything at all? No.
Nothing I can think of.
Nothing? When the police first encountered Fuller he asked them to write down some numbers.
Do any of those mean anything to you? These are digits 90 to 100 of pi.
It could be a code of some sort.
Did you run it through any databases? Of course.
Did Fuller say anything else? Just his usual end-of-the-world crap.
Nothing really worth repeating.
[Door opens, closes.]
4-2-1-1, 7-0-6, 79.
3-4-2-1-1, 7-0-6, 79.
MIMI: Air Force generals don't just visit civilians in their homes.
This isn't normal, Allen.
[Radio frequency buzzing.]
- What are you doing? - When I first spoke to Fuller, he said he heard a radio station during his encounter.
You said he was hearing messages from the radio the night he broke in.
And the police track him to a giant antenna.
It all has to mean something.
It should be to the nearest harmonic times two.
Why didn't you tell the generals any of this? Because I'm not sure I trust them right now.
What? Why? I just need to find out for myself first.
DEEP VOICE: The arrival is upon us.
If you're receiving, you're in danger.
For further instructions, decode 1-8-1-5, 1-3-1-6, 5-1-8.
The arrival is upon us.
Repeat transmission [Car door closes.]
[Engine shuts off.]
Mrs.
Miller.
Captain Michael Quinn, United States Air Force.
Sorry to bother you.
I've been asked to speak to you regarding a national security issue.
Would it be okay if we spoke inside? So what I help you with, Captain? Well, it's regarding Mimi Hynek and the event that took place the other night.
It hasn't really sunk in.
It's very brave what you did.
It's also uncommon for someone such as yourself to carry a gun.
Mimi talked to you about that.
- Did she mention - Being mugged in New York City? Yes.
Did you report it? Not at the time.
No.
We were too shaken up.
When exactly did you live in New York? From '49 until about a month ago.
Huh.
That's funny.
I went to check your name.
I didn't find any listings [Indistinct voices over radio in distance.]
Is your husband at home? No.
I must've left the radio on when I was doing the laundry.
- Excuse me.
- Of course.
[Voices over radio continue.]
MAN #1: I just want answers.
- I promise we're safe.
- MAN #2: I-I'll call you from [Radio shuts off.]
Sorry about that.
Listen, I'm gonna need to speak with both you and your husband at some point Um If you call the number, and I'll set up a more formal interview.
What exactly for? Well, the man you encountered is still out there.
We don't believe you're in any danger, but as this is a government issue, we've decided not to involve local authorities.
We appreciate your cooperation.
Of course.
Anything we can do to be of help.
Thank you again for your time.
[Radio frequency humming.]
DEEP VOICE: For further instructions, decode 1-8-1-5, 1-3-1-6, 5-1-8.
The arrival is upon us.
Repeat transmission - [Gear shift squeaks.]
- The arrival is upon us.
If you're receiving, you're in danger.
For further instructions Okay, can you just put the [Soft jazz music plays over radio.]
Now stay right there for me.
Okay, look up.
Perfect.
Good.
Thank you.
Ah, you're early.
Not bad.
The last guy they sent me needed to lose 20 pounds.
Dressing rooms are back there.
Uh, I'm sorry.
Where am I? What can I help you with? This.
Everybody take five, okay? Come with me.
[Lock rattles.]
From my last series.
Haven't found a buyer yet.
They're, uh, very provocative.
KELLY: Sign of the times.
Actually, it doesn't pay the bills, though, which is why I'm doing this.
DEEP VOICE: You're in danger For further instructions You're the broadcaster? No.
No, I just run the machine.
Get a check every month from a P.
O.
box to keep it going.
Someone else set it up and what have you.
Who pays you to run this? Never met them, whoever they are.
Got a call about six months ago from a fan asking if I was open to the idea.
The only thing they told me is that if anyone ever showed up, I was to give them this.
You're the only one who's ever come by.
The arrival is upon us.
Repeat transmission.
You recognize that? It's the 415th.
Night Fighter Squadron.
Formed in 1943 out of Kirkland Air Force base.
Met a few of these boys over in Europe.
Ballsy pilots.
Take a look at the other photo.
- Is that? - Earth.
That'd be my guess.
To get that shot, someone would have had to be able to take photo from 12,000 miles up, - which is impossible.
- So it's a fake.
Well, it's an awfully good one.
So what am I looking at here? - Where'd you get all this? - Fuller.
Not directly, and I don't think he even knew what this is all about.
Well, that makes two of us.
The 415th was the first unit to report UFOs in combat over Germany.
- Did you know that? - Yeah.
Papers ran a front-page story.
Said the pilots called them "foo fighters.
" And after the Air Force's official investigation, the findings somehow just went missing.
And the pilot who reported the first case discharged.
Deemed unfit to fly.
So? His name is on the back of the Earth photo Randall Kavanagh.
And I need your help to find him.
What do you need my help for? Well, he's not listed in any phone book, but his military records would have a last-known address.
I can't access those files.
You can.
Look, I want this whole mess to go away as much as you, but I'm not gonna jeopardize my position Fuller broke into my house! He tried to hurt my wife! And if Joel hadn't have been next door that time If there is something more going on here, I want to know what it is, okay? This is my family we're talking about here.
Now unless the generals have tasked you with keeping me quiet, too.
Hey! Foo fighters case is still open, huh? Guess we'd just be doing our jobs then.
HARDING: They just spotted Fuller.
He's on foot, outside Gaston, Indiana.
VALENTINE: Did they get him? FAIRCHILD: We've run out of time.
I'm gonna shut down the facility.
We're not shutting anything down.
And if Fuller returns before we get him? Do you want to explain that shit-storm to the President? He's not gonna get that far.
He wasn't supposed to get off the goddamn base either.
Remember? And that happened on your watch also.
Gentlemen I don't care if we have to drop a nuke on Indiana to take Fuller out.
Do.
Something.
[Dog barking.]
[Car engine shuts off.]
[Dog barks.]
You think he's friendly? [Dog barking.]
Randall Kavanagh? Hello, uh, sorry for the intrusion - Who are you? - I'm Professor Allen Hynek.
This is Captain Michael Quinn.
Captain? From where? United States Air Force, stationed Wright-Patterson Air Force base.
Think he heard you? [Gunshot.]
[Gunshots.]
[Dog barking.]
- [Gunshot.]
- [Dog barking.]
It's an M1 Single shot.
He's gotta reload the next round.
[Gun cocks.]
Throw me your hat.
Just throw me your hat.
On three One two three [Gunshot.]
Wait! It's okay, Doc.
You can come out now.
You were trespassing, and I have every right to defend myself.
We identified ourselves.
You didn't hear me say "Air Force"? - Oh, loud and clear.
- Why'd you fire on us? 'Cause the last time the government showed up on my porch, they did the same to me.
We're not here to cause you any trouble.
Said the guys who just tied me to a chair.
Well, you just tried to blow our heads off.
What else are we gonna do? What are you doing? He needs to trust us first.
There.
Does that help convince you? We just want to ask you a few questions.
About what? You know anything about this? You heard the broadcast? Nobody who hasn't had an encounter should have been able to find that signal.
Who are you? We've already told you.
Now it's your turn.
Set this up after I left the service.
It's a few of the articles I've been following.
You know, before I started flying, I didn't pay much attention to these stories, let alone believe them.
Till I had my first encounter.
With a UFO? "Unidentified Flying Object.
" Hasn't caught on yet.
So you saw a foo fighter, right? During combat? Walk us through.
It was Italy, 1944.
These strange, orange orbs were all I could think to call 'em.
They trailed me for about five miles after a bombing run.
Messed with my radio.
I heard the static.
And all my instruments went haywire.
And then Then what? I heard this music.
Radio station in my hometown of Scranton, if you can believe it.
Just like Fuller.
You reported it? Soon as I did, they pulled me off of active duty.
Put me in a hospital.
Told me I was suffering from stress.
What were you told by your superiors? To keep quiet.
They wanted me to go to this special hospital.
They told me I'd "get better.
" But I knew what that meant.
Meant they wanted to mess with my mind.
What do you mean? Who's this Fuller? Another pilot.
Had a very similar experience.
So he's one of us then.
There are more of you? [Radio frequency buzzing.]
[Radio static.]
[Electricity buzzing.]
[Engine starts, revs.]
[Soft music playing over radio.]
[Sighs.]
You really made this worse.
Is that what I did? I'm not the one who interfered with the target by bringing a gun into her house or the government to our goddamn door.
Keep.
Your.
Distance.
You still haven't learned.
You think this isn't serious? It's very serious.
Which is exactly why I'm staying calm.
Because I'm going to fix it.
[Engine shuts off.]
RANDALL: Boys, I'd like you to meet Dr.
Hynek and Captain Quinn.
RANDALL: These men here, they know what we've been through.
CHRIS: Don't they work for the enemy? Easy now.
All of us here, we told our story to the Air Force and got dishonorables.
Now what makes you think we'd want to talk to you? HYNEK: 'Cause that's our job.
We're here to listen.
I've heard of Blue Book.
You don't listen.
You lie.
We find the truth.
That's all we're interested in.
If you tell us what it is that you saw, we can help you get that out there.
Please.
I give you my word.
CHRIS: Routine training mission.
And I saw, uh, a wingless object.
Best I could guess, about 40 feet long.
Flyin' at high speeds in strange patterns.
Never saw anything fly like that before.
And like I said, it had no wings.
DAVE: I'm over Germany.
And uh, me and the Tuskegee fellas, we see these lights flyin' in formation, followin' us.
We called them "Kraut Fireballs.
" But there was no ordnance.
The Germans saw 'em, too.
GARY: Pacific Theater.
I see this gray cloud except it has more mass than any cloud should.
So I tried to engage.
But when I got within range, my engines shut right down.
Put me in free-fall.
What's your name? Uh W-William Friends call me "Billy.
" Well, Billy, I'd like to hear your story, too.
If that's all right.
Um, it the th-thing is, it wasn't so much what I saw.
I-I mean I did see something in the sky, but what happened after it changed me.
You hear things? Yeah.
From the radio? Songs.
- They speak to you.
- [Sniffles.]
[Voice breaking.]
Yeah.
RANDALL: We all suffer, Dr.
Hynek.
Contact left something inside our heads.
Like a song playing over and over again.
Yeah.
But it's different for each one of us.
This antenna then What's it for? It's our way of reaching out.
You see, we can talk to 'em now.
And they talk back.
JOEL: Is he gonna stay out there all night? MIMI: Joel, come away from there, please.
He has a gun, right? Just in case something happens? Nothing is gonna happen.
- Now, go get ready for bed.
- [Doorbell rings.]
I brought cookies! Mmm.
Chocolate chip.
My mother's own recipe.
It's very thoughtful of you.
Thank you.
Perhaps the soldier outside would like some? You noticed.
Jack said something about "house arrest" but I told him that was just silly.
Why would anyone want to arrest the Hynek family? You're not under arrest are you? No, we are just fine.
Like always.
Mimi, the whole block is talking.
Something is going on.
It's regarding Allen's work.
At the university? He's helping the government right now.
And all I can say is the soldier's just a formality.
No cause for alarm.
No? Donna, thank you for dropping by, but I need to put Joel to bed.
Oh.
I should get back anyway.
"Dragnet" tonight.
And that Jack Webb is just so [Laughs.]
Well, thank you again for the cookies.
Well, we don't do this enough.
And that's my fault.
[Exhales sharply.]
"Hynek" what kind of name is that? It sounds almost, I don't know, Slavic.
Uh Oh, I'm just being silly.
Of course it's not that.
You can just drop the plate off when you're done with it.
Bye! MAN: Lions and tigers and bears.
Come on by to the incredible, fantastical, and once-in-a-lifetime circus-o-rama [Radio static.]
["How High The Moon" plays on radio.]
Somewhere there's heaven How high the moon There is no moon above When love is far away too Until it comes true That you love me as I love you Somewhere there's music How near, how far Somewhere there's heaven It's where you are The darkest night would shine If you would come to me soon Until you will, how still my heart How high the moon [Groaning.]
Somewhere there's heaven How high the moon QUINN: Hear the news? Amelia Earhart's not lost.
Oh, and the Abominable Snowman is real And that leaning tower of junk is a direct line to spacemen from Mars.
Or Venus.
Possibly Uranus RANDALL: So this is where we speak to 'em.
- You build this? - Yeah.
How does it work exactly? Uh, we sent a c-controlled s-signal burst in pattern, and then repeat.
Wait for, uh, someone to answer.
Simple enough.
B-but y-you couldn't do it.
You have to be one of us o-or it d-doesn't work.
Here we go [Radio buzzing.]
Sending in, uh, three t-two - one - [Radio buzzing.]
[Electricity zapping.]
RANDALL: Here they come.
[Laughter.]
MAN: [Laughs.]
RANDALL: Oh, stand still.
They get easily spooked.
Are we seeing this right now? Most definitely.
Please tell me these guys didn't just call a bunch of spaceships while we've been standing here There's a correlation of some sort.
But whether the antenna's responsible RANDALL: You see it with your own eyes, just like we do.
Foo fighters come to us when we call.
Y-y-you must be making them nervous.
But they come back, right? Intermittently? RANDALL: It depends.
On which nights you come out.
I'm not too familiar with the geography here, but that's a logging road out there, yes? We passed it on the way in.
And the way the "objects" move in a relatively straight line suggests headlights more than flying craft.
As trucks move along the horizon there, headlights refract against the fog You're trying to tell us that those are just trucks now? Your tower can't be a communication device.
HYNEK: The power you're running it with isn't strong enough to be detected even a few miles from here.
Sorry.
You couldn't possibly have communicated with anything.
S-s-so you th-think you think we're stupid?! Oh, he's just giving you a logical explanation for what we saw.
A natural one.
C-can he explain what's inside my head? A-all of ours? Are you j-just g-gonna tell th-th-that's not real, too? Look, I flew plenty of missions myself.
I know what the stress of combat can do.
You can get help.
We know what kind of "help" the Air Force provides.
CHRIS: We are not going to that hospital.
I think it's best if you two just leave.
We're sorry.
Something's not sitting right.
I know pilots.
After you engage in aerial combat, nothing scares you.
There's something I haven't told you.
- What? - About Fuller.
This music they're all hearing.
- Well, Fuller heard it, too - I know that already.
Well, whatever it is, the Air Force tried to erase it from Fuller's mind.
Now it appears they tried to do the same to all these guys.
Every pilot who's made "contact.
" Erase? How the hell would they even do that? I think I saw where they performed the procedure.
A kind of hospital, like they ere saying, on my way home from Fargo.
When were you gonna tell me about this? Well, the thing is, there's actually more to it.
You've gotta be fucking kidding me.
[Horn honks.]
[Horn honks.]
So let me get this straight.
A man you don't know, whose face you haven't seen, has been following you.
It showed you a secret hospital where the U.
S.
government is performing mind-control experiments on pilots who have seen UFOs.
HYNEK: Yep.
You realize you sound like a crazy person, right? Which is exactly why I didn't want to tell you.
Which is exactly why you need to tell me.
We're partners.
You know, I stuck my neck out on the line for you to go on this wild goose chase.
You neglected to tell me the most important part of the story.
You gonna tell me where this place is? This hospital? Halfway between here and Fargo.
Give or take.
All right.
Then you're driving.
I need a nap after all this excitement.
I thought you said this place was a hospital.
Trust me.
Almost there.
QUINN: You actually followed some strange man down here? You're crazier than I thought.
I don't understand.
It was all right here before.
What was? This, uh chairs, m-movies showing on the wall.
This, uh, strange symbol He he he led me right here.
Please tell me we didn't drive all this way for this.
Should we turn on one of the rides? At least have some fun I'm gonna hit the head.
And we're gonna hit the road.
You owe me a drink.
Hello.
There's a lot of people looking for you right now.
Did you do it? Did you destroy the lab? Did I? No.
Then what are you doing here, Dr.
Hynek? Well, I could ask you the same question.
This is where it all started.
Where what started? I wasn't trying to hurt your wife.
You know that.
Just my head gets, uh, scrambled sometimes.
And I can't control it.
Do you wanna tell me about that? It's the program.
It's what they do to you after it happens.
I want to help you.
There's nothing anyone can do.
Look, I understand if they tried to erase your memories.
It could make you think all kinds of crazy things.
The government isn't trying to erase our minds.
They're trying to use us.
Use you for what? The encounters.
We get messages.
We're the antennas.
And the military, they want to use us to talk back.
That way, we can be weapons.
That's why I came back here.
I wanted to burn it all down so that they can't hurt anyone else.
What does this have to do with the program? I keep seeing this.
Wait! Lieutenant! Wait! Lieutenant! Fuller! What are you doing? No, stop! QUINN: Get out of here.
[Crickets chirping.]
[Telephone ringing.]
Hello? HYNEK: What if Fuller was telling the truth? About what was done to him? Doc, it's late.
We've been through this.
He was disturbed.
The man set fire to himself.
Yeah, and he didn't even flinch.
Look, when you see someone die it's tempting to want to blame yourself.
To try and make sense of it all.
But it's not your fault.
Are you there? Yeah.
Look, the best thing to do, you just try to get some rest.
I got a meeting tomorrow in the morning.
Early.
Check in after.
Okay, good night.
Morning.
Your 8:00 is here.
- Already? - She's freshening up.
- I'll send her right in when she's done.
- Thank you.
FAYE: Sir? Captain Good to see you again, Mrs.
Miller.
Is your husband here as well? I'm afraid not.
I did say this interview was specifically for both of you.
Yes.
But my husband isn't really my husband.
Not anymore.
We're separated.
I just haven't gotten used to telling people that yet.
I'm sorry.
Please.
Was it recent? Not really.
Although, he does come back from time to time.
Now you know.
Forgive me for being forward, but is there a Mrs.
Captain Michael Quinn? No.
No, there's not.
In that case, would it be okay if we went somewhere else to do the interview where we might be able to get a drink? [Laughs.]
It's a little early for that, - even by my standards.
- Mm.
I could use some hair of the dog, if I'm being honest.
It's been a a rough couple of days.
I suppose we should then.
Sure.
This one is for bravery, yes? It sure is.
I would love to hear that story.
[Door opens.]
I just heard.
Who found him? Bunch of vagrants looking for a place to get drunk.
Hell of a way to choose to go.
That is, if he chose to.
- You're not saying - I am.
I think somebody flipped Fuller's "off" switch.
The question is who? GIRL: [Echoing.]
8, 1, 5, 4, 5, 6, 5, 9.
