Rebel (2017) s01e05 Episode Script

Conceal and Carry

1 Cheena, TJ is still my husband.
If he dump Tarsha right now, you'd get back with him? MALE ANNOUNCER: Previously, on "Rebel" I'm trying to expand to help more soldiers coming home from war.
This is the price if nothing goes wrong.
Are you and Rebel back together? It is what it is.
Charles, reform is great, but if you wanna be chief, the rank and file needs to know you have their backs.
Don't ever forget that.
Chee, this is so you.
You think you can just become a PI.
You're an ungrateful bitch, sometimes.
Brim's been playin' me.
Said he wasn't with Malik the night he was shot.
Texas will see you now.
I'm Malik Knight's sister.
I wanna know what happened the night my brother was killed.
What happened to your brother is what happens to black and brown men all across this country every single day The police.
[gasping.]
It happened last night.
I blacked out.
REBEL: When I woke up, I was home in my bed.
They know where I live.
They wandered through my house.
[quietly gasping.]
I had my clothes on, but there was this I don't know what happened while I was unconscious.
Okay, there's no bleeding, or tearing of the vaginal wall, no semen, no physical sign of assault.
So, I wasn't raped.
I can't say for sure.
We'll check for STDs, I'll submit a rape kit.
No, you don't have my consent.
Rebel, you know I'm subject to mandatory reporting.
If you suspect I'm suffering from an injury caused by an assault.
You said there was no sign of physical injury.
Without proof, the police will make an example of me.
They'll say their black Barbie just had a nightmare.
I don't want my name on any paperwork or photos until you get the results.
This is my business, Sara.
Please.
Okay, I'll talk to the lab and keep it private for now.
Okay, what about pregnancy? It'll be weeks before we can test for that, but based on what I'm seeing, it's unlikely.
No, but you can't be 100 percent sure.
Just take it within 24 hours.
The side effects include dizziness, vomiting, you'll need to rest.
Not that I expect you to follow any of this.
Thanks, Sara.
For real.
[gun clicks.]
Somebody spiked my drink at Texas' party.
I'm guessing you had dread-head do it.
Hell, no.
What I look like? Some kind of date rape coochie bandit? Stay right there, or I'ma split his wig.
You've been holdin' back ever since we buried Lik.
Start talkin' or I'ma search this apartment and show five-0 everything I find.
I'm assuming you got some dirty gats, hot phones, devil's dust.
No, we ain't drugged you.
Oh, what you lookin' for, this? Since when did you start sleepin' with a heater? Texas got you spooked.
You scared of Texas? I ain't scared of no damn body.
Bob Marley, give us a minute.
BRIM: Go ahead, bro.
[door closes.]
All right, you can drop the tough guy act and start talkin' 'cause we're in this together.
You ain't the only one who had something strange happen to 'em, all right? The night Malik got shot, me and him was goin' into one of Texas' after sets.
These dudes rolled up and they tried to grab me Threw me in some van.
We fought 'em, I dropped my pistol, Lik picked it up.
That's when we separated.
A short time after, the snakes shot 'im.
So, you lied to my face? How many dudes was in the van? Three or four.
I couldn't tell you what they looked like.
They had masks on.
But the driver, he had a cross, or sword, tatted on his forearm.
So, old boy tried to set you up? The only reason we was there last night was because Texas invited me.
He doesn't want me to think he set me up.
So, you sent two men in to put on a good face while you did recon.
Do you think Texas drugged me? He disappears people, Reb Corner boys, dealers, hustlers.
They go for a few days, and when they come back, if they come back, they lay low.
They ain't never the same.
And you think Texas was trying to do that to you Make you disappear.
Why, mom? You gon' go talk to him for me? Don't laugh.
I know some bad-ass mamas.
- Detective Knight? - Miss Green? It's just "Rebecca" now.
It's been a long time, but I don't have any new leads on your son's murder.
I do.
He'd just gotten into the school of his dreams.
[kettle whistling.]
And he dreamed bigger than anyone.
Not a day that goes by that I don't think about him.
Or about the man who murdered him, and still hasn't paid for it.
I think about it all the time, too.
It was my first case as a lead detective.
First with my partner and first case I couldn't close.
Well, that's why I'm here because I think you can close it now.
Chris Adams has been diagnosed with cancer Stage 4.
How do you know that? The man killed my son.
It's my business to know.
They say he has a week to live, maybe two.
Do you think he'll talk? I don't know.
All I know is if he dies without confessing, the truth about Kevin dies with him.
I heard about your brother's murder, and I know you won't stop until you get justice for him.
It's the same for me.
Please just just talk to him.
Thank you.
Thank you.
[siren wailing.]
You need to stay back, stay away.
[sobbing.]
[siren wailing.]
[helicopter blades whirring.]
MACK: Few suspects.
No murder weapon.
No confession.
Sometimes, no matter how hard you work a case, it doesn't break your way.
Mack, I'm working this alone.
Olivia came to me, first.
I coulda kept it to myself, but I sent her to you because I know how much this means to you.
Just because you scratch my back doesn't mean I have to take you on.
Do you think you're the only one sittin' with this? I know the facts cold.
Kevin Green, budding artist, blunt force trauma to the head.
Memorizing a case doesn't mean anything.
His best friend, Otis, said a store owner accused him of stealin' 25 grand and went after him.
This could be the break we needed and I know you could use an extra set of eyes.
[gasping.]
Hey, are you okay? Oh [ominous music.]
Unh-unh.
[sighs.]
Let me at least drive.
Those the case files? You can have 'em.
I just want a confession.
We got a deal? Bring your badge.
It'll open the doors I can't.
And I'm drivin'.
TJ: Now, my transition house has already found jobs for dozens of returning veterans, and, with everybody coming home, that need is only expanding, so I need to expand, too.
Iraq, right? I heard that was tough.
Yeah, um, I signed up local sponsorships, got a grant from HUD, we're also waiting for a grant from Veteran Affairs, but I need that bridge loan until it comes.
Well, I can't do it.
I'm not allowed.
- Your credit's too low.
- My score is 670.
Look, man, a lot of people are depending on me, okay? I am sorry, Mr.
Jenkins, we've got rules Especially for projects like this.
Projects like what? You mean in this zip code? Serving this community? What are you saying? Mr.
Jenkins, the only way I can help you is if you get somebody to co-sign this application.
[drumming fingers.]
Yeah.
All right.
[alarm buzzing intermittently.]
MACK: You're the only suspect in Kevin Green's murder.
[hacking cough.]
Oh, stage 4 pancreatic.
[tsks.]
That sucks.
Kevin's friend Otis said that 25 Gs was stolen from your store.
You blamed Kevin in front of him.
'Cept I didn't.
'Cept two witnesses said they saw you publicly threaten to kill him if he didn't return your money, and you did so in the same alley that Kevin turned up dead.
I told you three years ago, I ain't killed that boy.
Nobody's stolen nothin' from me, either.
Yeah, well, you also said you didn't launder money through your store, and here you are.
- [hacking cough.]
- MACK: [sighs.]
What's a beastie boy like yourself - doin' with a Quran? - REBEL: It's a front.
A way to survive in here.
My faith is real.
Oh, you're the real deal? Another Mos Def? So, tell me this are you gonna carry that guilt until your judgment day? I mean, a real man of God would confess and get it right in this world before he went on to the next.
All I already know is everything I've done.
I don't need to unburden myself to you.
What about your girl? Your pen pal from Richmond? Bet you'd like to see her again.
Die in this hell hole, or at home in the comfort of her arms.
Tell us what happened and we'll get you a compassionate release to die at home.
[monitor beeping quietly.]
Kevin was always trying to steal from me.
He dreamed of havin' a store like mine.
Yeah.
Going to art school I mean, how the hell was he gonna pay for that? So, yeah, I believe he stole from me.
Then you threatened him.
Things got outta hand.
I ain't killed him.
I'll be a liar and a launderer, but Allah as my witness, I'm no killer.
[heavy sigh.]
Well, do you believe him? Well, he doesn't have much to gain by lying.
He's our best suspect.
We can't go back to Mrs.
Green empty-handed again.
No, we start over.
We go back to the person who pointed the finger at Chris in the first place Otis.
[cell phone ringing.]
Hey, TJ.
Yeah, I'll tell you about it later.
I can't talk right now.
Okay, you, too.
Are you back together with TJ? Mack, we're not partners anymore.
Can't I be happy for you? Let's go.
TJ: You can't just stop workin'.
No pay, no work.
I told you the money's on its way.
See? That, right there's what we call an unforeseen circumstance.
No, it's a delay, and I'm gonna pay you.
You want my men to be fast and cheap, and work around the clock for 13 weeks, but the whole time your pockets are empty? Now you've got a production halt.
No, no tiene nada.
Are you all right, boss? It doesn't look like it.
You need help with money or something? - Excuse me? - I meant no disrespect.
This placed helped me out.
I want to help others.
[sighing.]
My buddy can help, if you're in a jam, and he's quicker than a payday loan.
Yeah, well, payday loans don't break your legs.
Again, he's good, if you're in a jam.
MACK: Talk to us, Otis.
Kevin was my best friend.
When I lost him, I lost a brother.
Kevin's artwork was blowin' up before he died.
I mean, people loved it.
Still do.
But it's his success, too, it's not just mine.
Wasn't this Chris' store? Yeah, I bought it from him before he went to prison.
Sold a piece of Kevin's work for $30,000 and got Buku tax credits to stay in the artist zone.
When we talked to Chris, he did admit that his money was stolen, and that he confronted Kevin about it.
I've been saying that this whole time.
But he denies killing him.
OTIS: So, y'all just gonna take a convict's word on this? MACK: I'm not takin' anyone's word on it, right? [dramatic music.]
We're doin' our job, reviewin' the case.
So, Otis, you didn't mention you're marrying your best friend's girl.
You don't think I got that same look when we first got together? Look, I loved Kevin.
But what Simone and I have is real.
If Chris didn't kill Kevin, then somebody else did.
Is there something you guys didn't think was important three years ago that you think is important now? Who drew this? Some druggie artist.
We felt bad for him.
Bought some of his stuff.
Now that Kevin's tag has faded, it's clear he tagged over somebody else's.
And the guy he tagged over Maceo.
The one who found Kevin's body.
Maceo never said he had any beef with Kevin.
But the only time you tag over someone is when you wanna settle the score and start a new one.
- He had opportunity - REBEL: [gasping.]
and motive.
- [vomits.]
- Rebel? Hey, Rebel, what the hell is goin' on? Oh, I've gotta go home.
You really didn't have to drive me.
[laughs.]
You ever seen somebody yack behind the wheel? Letting you drive, it would've been ugly.
- TJ: Rebel.
- [sighs.]
TJ: Okay, what happened? - Look, I - TJ: What? I'm fine.
I just ate something bad.
I'll be fine.
What's he doin' here? We were workin' a case.
Just makin' sure she's okay.
I'll explain inside.
Can I have my wife's keys.
[keys jangling.]
TJ: Give a sec.
Be right there.
You know you ain't supposed to be workin' with her, right? Your wife's got a mind of her own.
So, this was her idea.
You're full of shit.
Always were.
[cell phone ringing.]
Hey, It's Chee.
Leave a message in one, two - [phone beeps.]
- Oh TJ: It's been a minute since we did this.
You left that at the table.
Kevin Green, huh? Yeah, I remember how hard that case was.
You back on it with Mack? Kevin's mom called us.
Guess he does have a conscience, after all.
Oh, conscience.
But what about Malik? Mack said it was an accident.
I've spent years handling weapons, and I never pulled a trigger unless I intended to.
Kevin's mom was at my door.
She still has no idea what happened to her son.
At that moment, I knew I had to help her.
I know you don't like Mack.
But what else was I supposed to do? Well so, what happened today? What'd you eat to make you so sick? I have no idea.
Oh.
You look scared, babe.
Are you sure you're okay? TJ, I'm fine.
I promise.
How's the expansion goin'? The expansion, oh, good.
Good, I mean, I've almost secured all the financing.
Just one kink to work out.
Oh, just one? That's progress for you.
BOTH: [laughing.]
TJ: Yeah, well, um I wanted to ask you something.
REBEL: It's not about money, is it? I'm just teasin'.
Look, the truth is you've been busting your ass on this.
I can't wait to see how it's gonna turn out.
So, what'd you wanna ask me? [pager beeping.]
It's almost midnight.
I know, but I've gotta close this case.
Look, I'll see you later.
[kisses.]
Look, I'm entitled to my opinion.
[laughs.]
As long as you admit it's wrong.
If the people who built these buildings wanted graffiti, all right, they'd have paid real artists to do it.
What these taggers do is narcissism, it's vandalism, it's aggrandism Aggrandism? Yeah, it's a $5 word.
You know it? Uh, that's not even in the dictionary.
[laughs.]
You look better.
Feelin' all right? What do we have here? Yeah? [car door slams.]
- Got it all figured - [shaking spray can.]
Hey, police.
I just wanna talk.
I just wanna talk! [dramatic music.]
[tires screeching.]
- [brakes squealing.]
- [heavy thud.]
- You're a cop! - [heavy punch.]
[screams.]
This is what happens to punks who swing on girls! - [paint spraying.]
- [screaming.]
- Help me.
Open the door.
- No! - Help me.
- No! No! No! REBEL: You need to pipe down, bro.
Mmmmm Welcome back from La La Land.
Why'd you paint my face? Hey, Bozo, remember Kevin? Why were you beefin' with him? I'll tell you anything.
Just give me some water.
He was killed right where he covered your tag.
You were the first one on the scene to discover his body.
He was mean.
REBEL: Aw, he didn't wanna be your friend? He'd run you over, if it'd benefit him.
Like someone else I know.
Is that why you killed him? Self esteem issues? I didn't kill Kevin.
But you're gonna kill me, if you don't give me some water.
REBEL: He doesn't seem right for this.
He's soft A drugged up lump of pudding.
Maceo, give us some names, all right? Hey, who else got trash talked by Kevin? I told you Everybody, okay? His friends, dogs, the mailman, everybody.
What friends, Maceo? - Wake up, mushroom brain! - [startles.]
Did Kevin ever beef with Otis? Now there's somebody I'd like to kill.
- [foot thuds.]
- [gasps.]
Look, did Kevin fight Otis? All the time.
Was Otis messin' around with Simone? MACEO: Oh, yeah, Otis wanted to be Kevin.
He was such a poser.
He even went to the same art school.
Huh, all that money for this? How did Otis pay for all this? Neither he or Kevin had a pot to piss in three years ago.
It's a two-year program.
In this state, tuition's 12 grand a year.
It says here that Otis paid for the whole program all at once.
REBEL: [laughs.]
Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how he got 24 Gs.
- MACK: Right.
- WOMAN: I found it.
- Here is Otis' application.
- Thank you.
Let me know when you're finished.
- REBEL: Thanks.
- MACK: Appreciate it.
Oh, look at this.
Otis applied the same year Kevin did and got rejected, but got accepted the following year.
This is Kevin's art.
I remember from the first investigation.
Maceo said Otis wanted to be Kevin.
Kevin took his best friend's art, and then, basically, took his spot in school.
What if Otis and Kevin took the money together they fought over it Otis killed him took the money then took his art to get in here.
Then took his girl for good measure.
He literally stepped into Kevin's shoes.
MACK: Yeah, but how did Otis kill him? We're gonna have to exhume Kevin's body.
[boxing gloves thudding.]
MAN ON PHONE: It's Junior.
We found another contract.
Twenty weeks' solid work, with a big deposit.
But my dad wants to give you one last chance, 'cause he actually believes in commitment.
So, pay us in full by tomorrow or we're gone.
[cell phone ringing.]
MAN 2 ON PHONE: Yeah? Who the hell is this? [door opens.]
- REBEL: Hey, babe.
- Oh, hey.
[kisses.]
How'd it go? Uh, it's a little more complicated than I thought.
Mack and I did have a breakthrough, though.
You headin' down to the CQ? Yeah, I'm about to go down there now.
[phone camera clicking.]
Um, Reb, I, um REBEL: Yeah? I'll check in later, okay? REBEL: Okay, babe.
My wife's in business with me.
That should be fine.
I'll review it this afternoon.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to get projects like this off the ground? Or is it your tactic to make things difficult, huh? Why don't you go on and approve that right now.
Of course.
MACK: How many blind alleys did we go down on this case? REBEL: Digging up a dead body's a new one.
And there's the blood evidence.
Looks like we found our murder weapon.
MACK: [sighs.]
So, Otis, you buried the murder weapon.
How do you think that's gonna look to a jury? Well, it just so happens it matches the indentations in Kevin's head.
Funny, huh? Found Kevin's blood on it.
Found someone else's, too.
How much do you wanna bet it's yours? What's your strategy? Huh? You're 21, okay? This is gonna end in a life sentence.
Your only hope is to confess.
I ain't killed Kevin.
We have a murder weapon, we have you burying said weapon, we have you stealing your best friend's work, we have you paying for two years of school with cash, and, best of all, we have you with his girl.
I've got you right where I want you, Otis.
Talk to me, so you don't throw away the rest of your life.
I wanna speak to Otis Parks.
Are you his lawyer? He has the right to be with someone! - Ma'am, calm down.
- He's not under arrest.
You can't hold him here against his will, and he can talk to whoever he wants, and I know, for a fact, he wants to talk to me.
Sorry.
Can't help you.
SIMONE: [heavy sigh.]
This is your fault.
Why are you so worried? If he didn't do anything wrong, they'll let him go.
I just wanna talk to him, okay? I'm entitled to that.
Yeah, but why are you so hell-bent on talking to him before the cops? You wanna get your story straight? 'Cause I can tell you, it's too late.
They already dug up the skateboard and the killer's prints are all over it.
I don't know what you're talking about.
MACK: [sighs.]
Tell me what was the big idea, huh? Kill Kevin, take his life? MACK: How does it feel to know that everything you've accomplished in the past three years isn't yours? How does it feel to know your life is a lie? Look, I did not kill Kevin! Simone is only with you because you stole Kevin's life.
You never really had her.
No, we're getting married.
Every time you guys are bumpin' and grindin', she's fantasizin' about Kevin, not you.
Face it, Otis, she never really loved you.
Look, I didn't do this.
[slams table.]
Go ahead, draw my blood.
You'll see I ain't killed him.
[door closes.]
REBEL: You haven't said Otis isn't capable of doing something like this.
Haven't said, you've got the wrong guy.
You're not worried about Otis.
You're worried about what Otis might tell the cops.
Police officers can't keep people trapped in the bathroom.
Oh, honey, I'm not a cop, I'm a PI.
And right now, we're just two girls havin' a little chat in the ladies' room.
SIMONE: [frustrated groan.]
Let me outta here.
You saw something, or maybe you did something, which is why you're all jittery.
Does it keep you up at night? You know, trauma can do that.
If you don't deal with it, it'll control your thoughts, take over your mind.
I don't know what the hell you're talking about.
[cell phone rings.]
Oh, sweetie, I think you do.
[laughs.]
Otis just confessed that it was you.
They've got the skateboard with your prints all over it.
I'm not listening to any more of this.
- [door handle thuds.]
- Help! Somebody please help me! Kevin had it all Looks, talent, charm.
- And he knew it.
- [pounds door.]
And he threw it in your face.
Cheating on you, putting you down.
You weren't his muse, you were his arm piece.
And you just wanted Otis and the money.
In about a minute, that door is gonna fly open, and cops are gonna come in here and throw you to the ground.
They're gonna interrogate you all night, and then the judge is gonna throw you in a hole that you're never gonna be able to crawl out of All because you refuse to cooperate.
But I can help you.
Okay? I can tell them that you made a mistake, that you didn't mean for any of this to happen.
But you've gotta talk to me, okay? Otherwise, they're gonna take Otis' side of the story, and you're gonna go down for everything.
Tell me what happened.
Let go of all this.
[sighs.]
You have no idea how much better you'll feel.
SIMONE: [sniffles.]
It it wasn't fair.
Because Kevin and Otis stole the money together.
Did they fight over it? SIMONE: Yes.
Then everything happened so fast.
You didn't have time to think.
They were supposed to split that money.
But Kevin was on top of him.
He was hurting him.
I hit him with the skateboard because I wanted to stop him.
But then he didn't move.
[sobbing.]
I didn't mean to kill him.
I just It wasn't fair.
- I'm so sorry.
- [sobbing.]
Kevin [gasping.]
MACK: Lucky this is California or I'd write you a ticket.
REBEL: [laughing.]
Ah, I'ma write you a ticket Tryin' to wear that hat like you're cool.
BOTH: [laughing.]
What can I say? This is the Bay.
You never know when the cops are gonna come by.
Gotta keep a lid on standby.
[clicks tongue.]
[quiet music playing in background.]
To Kevin Green.
Don't tell me that didn't make you wanna come back.
You don't quit, do you? Nope.
[cell phone ringing.]
REBEL: [grunts.]
So, what were the results? DR.
SARA CHAN: [oh phone.]
The blood panel came back.
No STDs, no further evidence of assault.
I won't be able to test for HIV for another few weeks.
The best I can tell, you weren't raped.
Thanks.
Something else showed up in your blood - Triazolam.
- Never heard of it.
Dentists use it on their patients to knock them out.
It's a serious anesthetic Especially in the wrong hands.
Rebel, you need to be careful.
[ominous music.]
MAN's VOICE: Help me lift her.
Rebel? Rebel? Rebel! What is what is going on? You've been acting strange this entire case Phasing off, getting sick.
I rode in the car with you for three years.
I know when something's not right.
I went afeter this dude, Texas.
He is some cunt from Houston, he knocks people out of the game and makes them disappear.
Malik was at one of his parties the night he was shut.
This Texas Did he do something to you? Somebody spike my drin at his party.
I woke up the next morning.
With a message on my chest, it said "Back off".
- I don't know what happened, I thought - Did he do anything to you? Are you sure? Come here.
[Sobbing.]
Hey, hey, hey.
Look, look, if this guy is as bad as you say he is you cannot go off on your own.
I know that's your MO but not on this one.
It could've been a lot worse.
I know, I I messed up.
Don't go off alone again.
And, I know that we are not riding together but I'll always be your partner.
And I will always, always have your back, no matter what.
Ok? Hey, Cheena, it's me.
Look I was just calling to say that I'm sorry.
