A big problem.
- Yeah, that's a lot of rust.
- So what do we do with rust, Don?
You have to cut it all out.
I mean, every single ounce.
What she does with the beach,
water physically makes
this thing oxidize faster.
So it's so important that
we trim all the rot off this thing.
If we leave it on, if there's
a bit of rust, this all will come back.
It's cancer, really.
It will keep on spreading.
Incrementally gonna move into it.
Grind it, smooth it,
and as far back as we see that rust,
that has to come out.
And when we have all the rust gone,
we'll take the drip rail
off this old piece.
Wrap that onto this.
But I can't tell how far to graft

It's crazy how that happens, huh?
All rotten. So that means,
not only do I have to cut the lip,
but now I gotta start digging
back in here.
Unfortunately,
this thing still needs a lot of work.
We're gonna keep cutting it up,
work our way all around,
deeper and deeper
until we get all the rot out.
I think this one's
gonna go right here.
This van has a very weird inner structure.

Today, we'll be building
an epoxy pour table.
So what I'm gonna be doing is making
a table that will mount in the van.
It'll be something that folds up,
folds back down so it's out of the way,
but a bit more personalized.
She has her favorite beachfront
where she teaches her surfing classes.
So we're gonna be basically taking
that sky view of that beachline,
and we're gonna actually carve that
into the table,
and it's gonna be really cool.
First thing I'll start with,
we're gonna use the projector,
and I'm gonna project
an image of the coastline
and trace it with a sharpie.
There we go.
Um, let's go cut the thing.
Now I'm gonna use a router
to carve out the topography
I just traced on our tabletop.
Oh, jeepers. Oh, it's heavy.
This will not only create a mold
to pour the epoxy over,
but it's also a really great opportunity
for our very talented cameraman, Jeff,
to strut his stuff
and make me look like a badass.
Whoa! Look at that sawdust fly.
Just really A-plus work.
Thanks, Jeff.
And sorry I called you Kevin.
Now that we've got Vanessa's
favorite surf spot carved into the table,
we're almost ready to pour the resin.
I'm gonna place these rocks
and get a nice jetty/coastline,
and then I'm gonna start mixing up
some epoxy resin.
Epoxy resin is a type
of super durable plastic.
It starts in a liquid state,
but once properly mixed,
a chemical reaction begins
that causes it to slowly harden.
Not all epoxy's
purpose-built for this.
When you do these tables,
you need to use a specialized resin
specifically designed for this instance.
Otherwise, you'll get this thing
called exothermic catalyzation.
That's where so much mass
will literally start to gas and smoke
and could set fire.
If we do all this right,
this will look like a big piece of glass
that really looks authentic to the coast.
It'll cure permanently
over the course of about 24 to 48 hours,
then we'll figure out how to mount it
in her Econoline.
Lacey and I were working late
cleaning up the rust
that was all over the Big Blue
grafting on the new drip rail.
Oh, look at that. Perfect fit.
Now that this is no longer ready
to disintegrate in front of our eyes
There you go.
we can really get to work on it.
All right, so the whole hammock idea,
I'm thinking about doing
some 1-5/8" tubes, welding it to it.
I'll have the hammock here.
It's gonna be stationary.
It's simple. It's easy.
- Just sticking out of the bumper?
- Like it? Yeah.
You're just gonna have
random tubies hanging out or?
Yeah.
- Don.
- You don't like it?
I know we're on a short time frame,
and, like, we're wore out now,
but you can't have just some random bars
coming off this thing.
We gotta give Vanessa something cool.
You have an idea?
What do you think about this?
I'm listening.
What if I built
a tube spindle on the bottom?
We hit a button,
and an actuator will physically turn it.
Right here, a spindle. This comes up.
- This goes pow! This goes
- Okay.
Do you see it?
So that was a lot of sound effects.
-Made sense to me.
-That's all that matters.
Lacey's right.
We can make this thing
funky and functional, baby. Mm-hmm!
That Don guy
is building monstrosities.
We'll start by measuring and cutting
the 1-5/8" chromoly tube
to serve as the arms.
Next, I'll bend these tubes
using my gorilla-like strength.
And perhaps the power
of compressed air to speed things along.
Now, here's where it gets truly metal.
To weld these arms to the spindle,
we have to notch out the ends.
So I'll hook up my drill to a hole saw
and carve off the tips to these tubes.
Oh, that's dope. Look at it.
That's sick.
As long as I measured right,
they should weld onto
the spindle assembly seamlessly.

favorite surf spot carved into the table,
we're almost ready to pour the resin.
I'm gonna place these rocks
and get a nice jetty/coastline,
and then I'm gonna start mixing up
some epoxy resin.
Epoxy resin is a type
of super durable plastic.
It starts in a liquid state,
but once properly mixed,
a chemical reaction begins
that causes it to slowly harden.
Not all epoxy's
purpose-built for this.
When you do these tables,
you need to use a specialized resin
specifically designed for this instance.
Otherwise, you'll get this thing
called exothermic catalyzation.
That's where so much mass
will literally start to gas and smoke
and could set fire.
If we do all this right,
this will look like a big piece of glass
that really looks authentic to the coast.
It'll cure permanently
over the course of about 24 to 48 hours,
then we'll figure out how to mount it
in her Econoline.
Lacey and I were working late

-Made sense to me.
-That's all that matters.
Lacey's right.
We can make this thing
funky and functional, baby. Mm-hmm!
That Don guy
is building monstrosities.
We'll start by measuring and cutting
the 1-5/8" chromoly tube
to serve as the arms.
Next, I'll bend these tubes
using my gorilla-like strength.
And perhaps the power
of compressed air to speed things along.
Now, here's where it gets truly metal.
To weld these arms to the spindle,
we have to notch out the ends.
So I'll hook up my drill to a hole saw
and carve off the tips to these tubes.
Oh, that's dope. Look at it.
