Ten Days in the Valley (2017) s01e05 Episode Script

Day 5: Back To Ones

1 - I'm Kathryn Collins.
- Jane's assistant.
Casey.
You are sleeping with my assistant? You asked about the Jane Sadler source.
Gus Tremblay.
Narcotics.
By the looks of it, their relationship is more than professional.
How long you and Sadler been sleeping together? You think I took her kid? Casey: She's beautiful.
We were wondering if we could have some more money.
When Pete and I get married, you'll have whatever you need.
I actually thought that you were clean.
I am clean.
Cold turkey.
But he's an extraordinary writer.
You just invited me here to give your husband a job.
- Just meet with him.
- Fine.
I have to run an errand, - and then I'll be right over.
- I love you.
You really think Casey's capable of hurting your daughter? - I don't know.
- Go, go, go, go! Police! Hands up! Don't let this be our final song Oh-oh Casey: Don't let this be our final song Oh-oh-oh So, hear me out before you say the night is over I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on So don't let this be our final song Baby, when we were young There was nothing to make believe And the songs that we sang They were written for you and me Melodies on repeat That's what I hear when you're by my side Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh Yeah, that's what I hear when you're by my side Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh But when you're gone, the music goes Oh-oh-oh I lose my rhythm, lose my soul - Oh-oh-oh - [Hammering.]
So hear me out before you say the night is over I want you to know Pete: Hey, you need, uh, help running your lines? - What? - You know "Sergeant, we've got a Code-2 in progress, we're gonna need backup.
" Oh, no, I'm not an actress.
Oh, no? I just assumed with the script and the TV studio and beautiful girl.
Uh, judging from that performance, you're not an actor either.
- [Scoffs.]
- [Laughs.]
No.
Music producer.
Wow.
Cool job.
Are you here for a meeting or something? Yeah.
Or something.
Mama's work is way bigger than yours! Well, that's because Mama chose commerce over art.
Who are you? I'm Casey.
Who are you? I'm Lake.
That's a movie star name.
Are you a movie star? No, silly.
I'm only eight.
[Both laugh.]
Okay, adorable.
Yeah, she's okay.
You're not here for a meeting, are you? Uh, no, I was just trying to impress you.
I'm just dropping my kid off.
I'm Pete, by the way.
You know, I'm about ten minutes from a free afternoon.
You want to maybe grab a bite to eat? We could drive up the coast a little and get lost.
Um, I already am, actually.
Lost, I mean.
I got turned around trying to find the "Dean Martin Building.
" Oh.
Well, we'll walk you across.
- Yeah.
Come on, babes.
- Oh.
Okay.
Babes, come on.
Let's shake a lake.
Hey, so, this interview.
You're a costume designer or hair and makeup? Key grip? I'm interviewing for an assistant position.
Jane Sadler, she's a showrunner - Ah.
- You know her? Yeah, I know her.
I'd put in a good word, but I think it would hurt your chances.
- Mama! - Hey, I'm feeling like Whoa! There you are! Hello! Hello! Ohh! Special, special girl.
Well, I went to film school because I thought I wanted to be a director.
Actually, at first I thought I wanted to be an actress, but, you know, probably everybody in this business had that dream at some point, right? I didn't.
Well.
It's not for everyone.
So much pressure to look perfect all the time.
I mean, not that you don't.
You look great.
Anyway, I got super into docs in school, which was when I saw your movie.
Which was amazing.
And then I heard about this show, and I just thought it would be so cool to be a part of you, taking on the cops again.
But this isn't a documentary.
Right, it's, like, a cop show.
Which is cool.
Some of them are really good.
I mean, I think it would be amazing to see how you find your stories, come up with ideas, build a narrative.
Because I want to be a writer.
- I said that already, right? - No.
You didn't.
You know, Casey, if you want to survive in this business, you need to know what you want.
Or at least be able to fake it.
You don't seem like you do.
I do.
I want to be a writer.
I want to be you, - or - [Chuckles.]
- I want to be like you.
- Mm.
[Cellphone vibrates.]
Oh.
You know what? I'm sorry.
I need to get this.
But thank you so much for coming in really.
- Um - It was really nice to meet you.
You know, I-I know what this job is getting groceries, returning calls and and I'm totally on board.
I really want this.
- It's really great to meet you.
- I'm really such a huge, huge fan.
Lakey? Uh, I have to go to the stage.
If you need anything, Julia's right outside, okay? - Okay.
- Okay.
It's fine.
It's okay.
There are other jobs.
[Toilet flushes.]
Lake: Why were you talking to yourself? Sometimes I like to give myself a pep talk when I feel sad.
Why are you sad? Because I really wanted this job, and I don't think I got it.
Sometimes I get sad, too.
I wish Daddy lived at our house, so we could all be together.
Yeah, I bet that kinda sucks.
Well, maybe you should try a pep talk.
A what? Here.
I'll go first.
Even through I probably didn't get this job with your mom? Today was still super good because I got to meet you.
[Chuckles.]
Okay, your turn.
Okay Even though my mom and dad don't live together anymore, I don't have to be sad, because we're still a family.
- That was perfect.
- [Door creaks.]
What's going on? A pet talk.
What? That's what Casey said it was called.
[Chuckles.]
Pet talk, pep talk.
Oh.
Either way, you did great.
Mom? Mm-hmm? Can Casey have the job? I don't want her to be sad.
Please, Mama? - I got the job! [Laughs.]
- I am so proud of you.
No way.
Oh, come on.
Please.
One sip.
I don't want my little niece or nephew to come out with two heads.
[Scoffs.]
Is that really what happens? So was Jane Sadler as amazing as you thought? Or as boring as her documentary? Her documentary was not boring.
Anyway, it won, like, a ton of awards.
Jane is amazing.
A little intimidating, but of course she is, right? And her daughter is the cutest thing I've ever seen.
You are such a kid freak.
What you need is a boyfriend.
I did meet a guy today.
- Okay.
- A man.
Whatever.
He was sweet and funny and sexy.
Mm-hmm.
So what's the problem? He's Jane's ex.
[Scoffs.]
And? No way, I was lucky to even get this job, I'm not gonna screw it up over some guy.
If they're not together, then he's fair game, and I say go for it.
That's what Jane Sadler would do.
Let's just focus on the good stuff, okay? Things are finally on track.
This job is gonna change my life.
[Police radio chatter.]
[Camera shutter clicking.]
[Siren wailing in distance.]
Officer: Along this side of the bar, please.
[Police radio chatter.]
[Sighs.]
I know you're playing out all the worst case scenarios right now.
You know, I was with Pete when I realized it was Casey.
- Maybe he called her, tipped her off.
- Well, maybe.
Casey and her sister must have panicked.
They fought about what to do.
Turned on each other.
The sister must be a psycho.
But she took Lake which means Lake's alive.
- Let's work from there.
- So.
Best-case scenario, there's a pregnant crazy woman on the road with my kid.
Look, we got patrol cars on every road in every direction.
We will find her.
[Sighs.]
Okay? Okay.
[Vehicle door closes.]
Casey: You know that I love your daughter, right? [Object clanking.]
I'll get these back to you as soon as Forensics is done with them.
Can I get you anything? My daughter.
Maybe a glass of water, for now.
Could you call my sister and tell her what's going on? I can't talk to her right now.
Not her, specifically.
Just anyone.
I'll let her know.
[Door opens, closes.]
Mackenzie: Okay, but I feel like we've seen that before.
Maybe a political plot where the Armenians are working for the government? Uh, to uncover a prostitution ring.
Run out of a casita.
Okay, guys.
It can't be some made-up conspiracy, okay? This is our final episode.
We have to reveal something about the world we're living in.
You know, something new, bigger.
You know, systemic corruption, a fine line between police and criminals they're investigating.
You know what? Let's just call it a day.
Okay.
I-I-I need to think this through myself.
Oh.
Uh, Casey Lake forgot this, and she needs it for school tomorrow.
Do you mind running it by Pete's? - Okay.
- She's with him tonight.
- Pete's house? - Yeah.
He'll just turn it into a fight if I go.
He'll be so much nicer to you.
Wow.
She's really got you doing all her dirty work, doesn't she? Well, technically, that's my job.
[Laughs.]
Hey, do you have a minute? I need a second opinion on something.
- Oh, I should really get back.
- One minute.
I promise.
If you're late, you can just blame it on me.
Jane will understand.
[Chuckles.]
[Door closes.]
Here.
Jump in here.
You see, I've been working with this new artist, we politely call them "emerging" But I have two versions of the same track, and I need to choose.
Oh yeah, this is definitely my area of expertise.
It's just about taste.
That's all it is instinct and intuition.
Both of which I think you might have.
- [Chuckles.]
- So, you like this? [Mid-tempo pop music plays.]
Twisted, you can't turn your mind off Every thought is a lost cause - [Music stops.]
- Or this one? [Slow piano music plays.]
Twisted, you can't turn your mind off Every thought is a lost cause It pushes and pulls Takes everything till you're broken How do we get through? How do we live like we're supposed to Till we're gone? I should go.
Jane can't tell you who to date.
But she can fire me.
Only if she finds out.
It's not just that.
I like Jane, and I'm learning a lot.
She's smart, she's got her act together [Scoffs.]
Okay.
I should really go.
Let go of control Go with the slow version.
Oh-oh, oh-oh Oh, whoa-oh-oh - Caught up in so many things - [Breathing shakily.]
Taking the cure, but feeling the pain Holdin' it in Losin' yourself Stayin' alive, but you're broken [Horns honking.]
Control Oh-oh, ooh-ooh Nickole: Jane'll be here for a while, she wanted you to know.
Any questions, you have my number.
Thanks for calling, Detective.
And please do keep us updated.
[Line clicks.]
This is all Pete's fault.
Hey, be fair.
There's There's no way he could have known that Casey would take Lake.
And certainly not that her sister would do something even worse.
Yeah, well, I guess crazy just runs in Casey's family.
It's just so bizarre.
I hate it when Jane does this.
Just shuts down, shuts me out.
Lynn Stacey Collins.
96 friends.
Looks like she's an inspirational quote enthusiast.
"Storms don't last forever.
" "There's no shame in asking for help.
" You know, maybe you've got a mental health issue here.
You know, I almost forgot to tell you.
I got a call from your old college friend, Jamie.
Really? - How's she doing? - Seems to be doing great.
She's working with this new digital media outlet called Dash.
She's the top editor at the news site, and she wants me to come meet with her.
Wow, that's great! Yeah.
I haven't spoken to her in ages.
I got to catch up when this nightmare's over.
Yeah.
I mean, it might be nothing, but It might be something.
[Siren wailing in distance.]
Where are you on the Sadler case? Good to see you too.
E.
I've got people waiting for me.
Crime scene's a mess, S.
I.
D.
's been there all night.
And still no sign of the sister.
[Sighs.]
- Press? - Contained.
We're keeping this close, don't worry.
This story's already making the rounds at the D.
A.
's office.
Which means it's gonna follow me to the event tonight.
Anyone asks you, you send them straight to me.
I've got my best guys on this, Christopher, it's under control.
Kidnapping turned double homicide doesn't sound under control.
Okay, look, you get up on that stage tonight, you trot out the family, all anyone's gonna want to talk about is how much good you've done for this city and how many bad guys you put away.
Come on.
I snag 'em, you bag 'em.
That's why they love us.
[Chuckles.]
It is possible to be too unflappable, you know.
I can't help it.
Everyone knows that the good juice flows to the second born.
[Chuckles.]
All right, little bro.
[Police radio chatter.]
[Cellphone rings.]
Bird.
Tell me some good news, Detective.
Bird: Well, nothing yet.
No word on the sister either.
Anything you need from me out there? - I'll let you know.
- Okay, good.
Listen, John, I need you to come to this event tonight.
What event, the campaign party? [Scoffs.]
Now you know I can't do that.
We're just getting started here.
S.
I.
D.
's gonna be working that crime scene well into tonight.
You can spare a couple hours.
Look, boss, I got to stay There are a lot of eyes on us right now, John.
We could use a win.
The Medina case is bound to come up tonight.
And I want everyone who worked that task force there for a photo.
You ran it, you gotta be there.
Listen, I don't even have a suit.
You've been married three times, John.
Wear one of those.
Uh, we got a hit on Lynn's credit card.
Patrols are already on the way.
All right.
Tell 'em to keep their eyes on her.
Nobody approaches her until we get there.
Let's go.
[Indistinct conversations.]
Casey: I looked for you in the house, - but of course you're out here.
- Yeah.
I know you're working on the network pitch, so I just thought I'd bring some supplies.
- Oh.
- Caffeine, candy.
Just what you need for a late night Oh, great.
Thanks.
Oh, it's nothing.
I've got a prescription.
Keeps me focused.
Sure.
No judgment.
[Chuckles.]
[Clears throat.]
Well, I'll just leave these here.
A-Actually, um, leave it in the house when you go.
Otherwise, I'll eat the whole bag and loathe myself in the morning.
Thanks.
Mama? No, honey, it's Casey.
I'm sorry.
Was I loud? I didn't know that you were here.
Where's Mama? She's in the shed, working.
- I want to see her.
- No, no, no, no.
You don't want to go out there, Lakey.
It's just boring work stuff.
But hey, come here.
Look what I got.
[Gasps.]
- Gummy bears! - [Chuckles.]
Yeah.
Hey.
Sweetheart, what's going on? I heard you get out of bed.
You said you were gonna stay.
Well, I did stay.
But then you fell asleep.
Aww.
You want me to put you back to bed? - Will you sing me a song? - Yes, of course.
Absolutely.
What do you want to hear? - I don't know.
- Oh.
Give me this.
All right? Thank you.
Casey, just so you know, she really can't have that stuff after 7:00.
Lullaby, and good night [Doorbell rings.]
Casey.
Whoa, uh What about Jane? What about her? [Indistinct conversations.]
[Breathes deeply.]
Casey's dead.
Yeah.
[Sighs.]
Lake's with her sister? That's what they think.
Yeah.
I never even met her sister.
[Breathing shakily.]
Jane, I Jamie: Tom.
Sorry to keep you waiting.
- It's just we're crazed right now.
- Hey.
Um No problem, it's just good to see you.
Yeah.
Come on up.
So, I really like your site.
I-I checked it out this morning.
Lots of seasoned talent on your team.
I know, right? They all jumped ship with the big guys to come work with us.
Leaner, meaner, all that.
[Clears throat.]
So.
So.
- It's been a while.
- Yeah.
What have you been working on these days? Well, I've been researching the incoming conflict between the federal government and the sanctuary states on immigration That's such an important story.
And one that all the news outlets will be covering, thankfully.
Right.
Anything else? Well, I've also been working on a story on infertility and the modern woman.
Balancing career with the desire to conceive.
Hmm.
Personal experience? Yeah.
Actually, Ali and I have been on this ride for a couple months now.
That must be hard.
Sometimes.
Anyway.
Those are both solid feature ideas, but do you have anything more immediate? Actually, I don't.
I'm sor I'm sorry.
I should be more prepared, but t-the truth is, Jamie, it's been a pretty rough week.
Our niece, Lake, she's eight years old, and she went missing.
What? She got taken.
From her house, middle of the night.
Oh my God.
That Is this Jane's daughter? Mm-hmm.
It's a mess.
Sorry.
How long has it been, 'cause I've I've heard nothing about this.
Five days.
The cops are keeping it quiet.
- It's standard procedure, I guess.
- No, no.
I get that for the first 48, but if it's been five days Someone needs to get this story out.
- That's what I keep saying.
- Then write it.
Well, I All right, I-I I wasn't I wasn't actually pitching.
I was just venting a little bit.
I mean, this is my family.
I know.
[Cellphone vibrates.]
Excuse me.
Uh, it's it's, uh, my brother-in-law.
Um, Lake's dad.
- Do you mind if - Please.
Yeah.
Uh, listen, I really appreciate you taking the time to see me, and, um, I'll I'll give you a call.
Okay.
What's going on? [Tires screeching.]
[Engine shuts off.]
- Check out the back.
- Yeah.
[Indistinct conversations.]
- Anything? - No.
[Door opens.]
Lynn Collins, turn around, get down on your knees.
Down on your knees now! Where is she? - Where's Lake? - I-I don't know what you're talking about.
We got her.
Code four.
- Where is she? - I'm pregnant.
Please.
I don't know what you want.
Where's your car? Where's your car?! - Outside! - [Keys jingling.]
[Lock disengages.]
[Trunk slams.]
So you came home from the doctor.
- [Sniffles.]
- Then what? I saw the police cars at the house.
Thought they must've come for Casey.
Come to arrest her for taking Lake.
Go on.
I panicked.
I drove away, just kept driving.
[Knock on door, door opens.]
- Sadler.
You can't be in here.
- Please.
I'm dying out there.
Can I just sit in here with you? When was the last time you spoke to Casey? Close the door.
I talked to her on the phone earlier in the day.
Lake was totally safe at our house.
Not like at Jane's leaving Lake alone at night, drug dealers coming over to the house.
That was the toxic environment.
[Voice breaking.]
Casey was a good person.
She loved Lake.
She just wanted to protect her.
It's like, I keep trying to impress her, anticipate her needs, and nothing I do is ever good enough.
"Casey, don't you know that Lake can't have candy after 7:00?" What a bitch.
You only gave Lake the candy so she wouldn't catch her mom doing blow in the shed.
She said it's prescription, but who knows, right? You should tell Pete.
Maybe I will.
Good.
Jane doesn't respect you, she never asks you opinion, and she only pretends to care about Lake.
If you got fired, you and Pete could be together, and Lake could move in with you guys.
Jane cares more about work than her own kid.
[Sighs.]
I swear, I don't know what happened.
When I left the house, everything was fine.
She was my sister, and I would have done anything for her.
Would you have gone to jail for her? - [Cellphone rings.]
- Because that's where this was headed.
[Sniffles.]
I need to get this.
If anyone should be in jail it's Jane.
- This is all her fault.
- Hey.
Jane cared more about work than her own kid.
[Sighs.]
I do have a question about the casita raid story, though.
Oh, man.
You never shut off, do you? Mm! Look, hear me out, okay? Why would the Armenians take such a big risk and raid a casita run by a Latino gang? [Grunts.]
Oh.
Hey.
- Please don't be mad.
- I'm not mad.
I j I don't know what to tell you.
Well, why don't you just tell me the truth? Huh.
Please.
I just I-I don't know what I'm making here, you know? I don't know why this is important, why I'm even telling this story.
Dueling gang members and narcotics cops investigating them, so what? I feel like I've seen it a million times.
What if they were cops? What if what were cops? The guys who raided the joint.
What if they were cops? Three people were killed.
Yeah.
Wait a minute.
You're saying it was the police? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- You can't use any of this.
- No, no, no! - I won't, I promise.
- You can't us You tell me the truth, and I'll make it fiction.
That was the lab.
[Door closes.]
We did a Gun Shot Residue test on Lynn.
Came back negative.
She didn't shoot anybody.
[Sighs.]
I'm sorry.
So, who did this? I don't know.
Dirty cops.
That's where this season goes.
And, uh, episode 10, Red and his crew raid a casita.
But something goes wrong.
Someone resists and pulls a gun, and three innocent people are killed.
That's the world that we throw Isabel into.
It's dark.
It's dangerous.
And it's true.
Hey.
It's me.
I'm at the station.
I need to see you.
Please.
Gus: Sadler.
I shouldn't be here.
What What happened to you? Exactly what I thought would happen.
I call in a take-down, I don't get backup.
I radio for help, they don't come.
Is that because you talked to me? Because of my show? You're telling the casita story.
They don't want it out there, which means they're gonna stop you, and then they're gonna punish me.
What do I do? I'll I'll talk to Bird.
Sadler, this is happening because you told the truth.
The more you talk, the worse it gets.
Just You gotta stop it.
Just shut it down.
[Siren chirping.]
[Police radio chatter.]
I got to go.
Later.
Gus! Gus! [Sighs.]
Jane.
Jane, are you okay? What are you doing? We're just gonna make a few changes.
Do you even hear yourself? He has lost his way.
And you are making excuses for him.
Dominic: Because he's a good man.
And he knows more about this division - than you and I combined.
- He's a thug and a coward who's hiding behind his badge.
You and I both know how that story ends.
One day he is gonna push somebody who's gonna push back, and someone is gonna get hurt.
You really ready to live with that? Jane: Cut! Great.
Oh, my God.
You guys killed that.
- Hey! Yeah, so great! - Your words.
I just need to chat with these guys for one second.
Jane, what are you doing here? Um, we're gonna make some changes.
Um, it's gonna affect some scenes that we've already shot and some scenes that we have coming up.
Scenes we've already shot? Jane, w-w-what kind of changes? Uh, cops can't be the bad guys.
Wha You can't be serious.
Yeah.
I'm serious.
We're gonna go in a different direction.
Carmen, call lunch.
- We still have another hour.
- Call it.
Okay, everyone, that's lunch! - [Bell rings.]
- Jane.
Christopher: There are so many of you here tonight who have supported me and encouraged me to take this next step.
But I want to single out one person in particular.
Elliot Gomez of the L.
A.
P.
D.
[Applause.]
Now, many of you know him as Commander Gomez.
Or boss.
Or the man who built the case against crime lord Vince Medina, the hero who helped me take him off our streets.
But long before that, his first title was mi hermano.
- Please, stand up, Elliot.
- Woman: Oh.
[Applause.]
My little brother, my colleague, my best friend.
Give me a diet soda.
I can honestly say I wouldn't be here without you.
You haven't changed at all.
Same watery-ass drink.
Same suit, from the look of it.
- Still fits.
- Does it? My family and I would like to thank you all so much for coming.
- Enjoy the evening.
- [Both laugh, applause.]
Anyway I hate this stuff.
I know you do.
You're teaching our son to hate it too.
He didn't even want to go to his High School Graduation.
He's a rebel.
He's an idiot, just like you.
[Chuckles.]
Hey.
What are you doing? I didn't touch it.
Not yet.
And you won't.
I think I might.
Listen to me, Pete.
You You got to hold it together now more than ever.
You know that.
But how many times did I complain about Jane? Threaten to break into that house myself and take Lake? Casey did that for me.
I I can't really say that I had nothing to do with all of this.
I just want to go back to when Lake was a baby.
I wasn't using, business was good.
Jane and I were happy.
[Sighs.]
Let's get out of here, huh? Yeah, we'll go for a walk, discuss our empty bank accounts, maybe grab some food.
[Exhales.]
[Glass clinks.]
Too late.
It's done.
[Soft music plays.]
Who are you hiding from? Everyone.
You working the Sadler case? Yeah.
Everyone's talking about it at the D.
A.
's office.
[Exhales.]
Do you remember when we lost Jacob in Storybook Park? Worst 10 minutes of my life.
Then there he was, sitting next to Humpty Dumpty on that wall.
I got there too late.
What do you mean, you're the one who found him.
Jane Sadler's kid.
We figured out where she was, but by the time we got there, she was gone again.
Until there's a body, it's never too late.
You taught me that.
You showed your face, that's enough.
Go, get outta here.
[Groans, sighs.]
Tom, could you turn that light off, mate? It's really bright.
Just turn that one off.
All right, all right, all right.
Look, you go to sleep, and everything will look better in the morning.
[Mockingly.]
"Everything will look better in the morning"? [Normal voice.]
Oh, Tom.
No wonder the Tim let you go, mate You're a hack.
[Snoring.]
[Switch clicks.]
Tom? - Jamie.
- Hey.
Sorry.
I didn't mean to to ambush you here.
Don't apologize.
What do you need? Um Y-You're gonna You're gonna run this story one way or the other, right? - Probably.
- Okay.
I-I just don't want it in anyone else's hands.
- It's just too important.
- I totally agree.
But if I am gonna do this, I just want to make sure there's no There's no red-lining it to oblivion.
No sensationalizing it, please.
I-I just wanted to retain a little bit of control.
For my family.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
This time tomorrow? [Sighs.]
That's Are you serious? Tom.
It's a miracle this story hasn't broken already.
And if it wasn't your first day working for me, I'd be telling you to have this in my inbox by 6:00 a.
m.
tomorrow.
Okay.
This time tomorrow.
Great.
Matt: I have never seen her like this before.
I know she's going through hell, but Jane doesn't want to tank her own show, but she's just not thinking straight, right? - She's grasping at straws.
- Of course.
I'm glad you called.
Jane.
Hey! Marcus.
What are you doing here? How are you? You know, I was, uh, driving over here, and I kept thinking This is such a difficult time for you.
You shouldn't have to be focused on work right now.
Henry: Come on.
The kind of changes you're talking about require approval.
Okay, well, let me show you what I've got.
Jane.
The show is already on the air.
We're one episode away from wrapping.
It's too late.
Okay [Sighs.]
I don't care! All right? I need the cops to help me find my daughter.
I can't be writing a series that paints them as criminals.
I mean, you do get that, right? Jane.
You have the full support from everyone at the studio and the network.
Take all the time No, you don't understand.
We're saying stuff that they don't want us to say.
Which means that we have to stop.
We have to change it.
Jane.
We're 100% behind your original vision of the show.
And please know that we'll do everything in our power to carry out that vision, while you focus on your situation.
Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
Are you firing me? I'm handing your show over to Matt.
Matt: I'm worried about you, Jane.
You should be worrying about episode 10.
It's not ready.
It's your draft.
And it's your rewrite.
Bad guy sounds like a cartoon character.
You just told our network that your daughter's missing because of a TV show.
Do you know how crazy that sounds? [Scoffs.]
You want to hear crazy? Casey kidnapped Lake.
By the time the police got there, Casey was dead.
Shot between the eyes.
What? Matt, this is actually happening.
Hey.
Hey.
[Door opens.]
- Hey.
- Hey.
[Door closes.]
Just thought I'd check in.
[Sighs.]
I'm almost done logging everything in from the crime scene.
[Bag thuds.]
Where'd you find this? Let's see.
It was under the kitchen table.
What is it? It's from a flash bang.
A what? A stun grenade.
We use them for tactical entry.
[Sighs.]
So is this This is the plan, then? - Oblivion.
- Something like it.
Yeah.
I know it feels hopeless right now.
- I get it.
- No, you don't.
- No, I do.
- No, you really don't, Al.
This is my fault.
- Jane, it's not your fault.
- Yeah, it is.
None of it We just need to stay positive and let the police do their jobs.
No, no.
No police, not anymore.
What? Jane, what is going on? I had a source that was giving me insider information about dirty cops.
He told me not to use it.
He told me bad things would happen.
- But I didn't listen.
- Okay.
There have been other shows about cop corruption Yeah, but I should have changed it.
I used every detail the casita, the flash bang, the dirty cop named Red, all of it.
And now they know.
You're not saying these cops have Lake, are you? I don't know! All I know is that she was with Casey.
And we were on our way there.
It went out over the radio.
And someone got there first.
This is what you do.
You blame yourself.
- No! - Jane, it's not your fault.
Let's get you some sleep.
I'm not gonna sleep, okay? I'm not gonna go home and get dressed and take a shower and water the plants and eat breakfast.
I'm not gonna be normal.
Okay? Take me home.
[Police radio chatter.]
Where are we going? I said, where are we going?
