The Blue Rose (2013) s01e05 Episode Script

Pretty Girls Make Graves

Help me.
She's in the water.
Please.
Oh, freaking hell.
We need to call an ambulance the cops.
Last I saw her, we had an argument.
She walked through that door and What did you fight about? It was personal.
The cops are scaling things down.
They're looking for a homeless guy, but are pretty sure it's death by misadventure.
Who are the bad men? You need to tell us so we can go to the cops.
No cops.
No way.
Huge thanks to everyone who donated.
Krystle, hello.
Where is Simon? He is not in yet.
He wasn't at the meeting.
You didn't send an apology.
Well, I didn't know he wasn't going to be in so He's not here.
I can see that.
Krystle, would you get me a cup of green tea? I'll be up shortly.
All right.
I had a call from Whiting Hood in Wellington regarding the Cranston matter.
Cranston Whiting Hood were expecting an offer by today.
Their client is not happy.
OK, I will get Simon on to that right away.
Thank you.
That would be helpful.
Simon Frost.
Leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
Hi, Simon, it's Jane.
I need to talk to you about the Cranston matter.
What's the panic? Cranston, which I have never heard of, which isn't in the system, but is supposed to be here, somewhere.
Like Keith Cranston? The Minister of Energy? Could be.
Is he a client? Ether that or it's another Cranston.
Jane's phone.
Hi.
Putting you through.
Hi.
Where are you? I got called away, a personal matter.
Helen has been looking for you.
I know.
I've been dodging her calls.
She wants me to send out something today.
The Cranston matter? The thing is I can't find it.
It's not on the server.
It is there, on a laptop in the safe.
Safe? Go to the credenza.
It's in there.
The file is Cranston settlement, yesterdays date.
Print me three copies and bring them to me.
Where are you? 411 Andromeda Dr, Albany.
And how do I get into the safe? 6465, then press hash.
Are you in? Yep.
See you soon.
Get a cab.
Helen's wondering how it's going.
Fine, all taken care of.
Simon has a safe? Yeah.
Well, I'd better get back to work.
Just up here, love? Yeah, this should be it.
Thank you.
Hi.
A cousin of mine, he's not well.
Thanks for this.
It's rather sensitive.
Because he's a Cabinet minister? Cranston's going through a messy divorce.
He wants to keep things under wraps.
Send it down by courier.
Thank you.
Simon.
What is it? I wondered if you were going to be coming back into the office this afternoon? I'll be an hour or so.
OK.
Simon has Homeless Guy? Why's he in a rest home? I don't know.
- Who was the other guy? - I don't know! The point is we know where he is, so we can just go in and nail the bastard.
Nail him? Find out what he knows.
- We have to be subtle about this.
- I can do subtle.
You can't go in while Simon is there.
He knows you.
What if Simon does something to HG? Like what? Offs him? Why would he put him in a rest home if he was going to off him? If he knows something about Simon, like he's the bad guy? You don't know that.
But I did see some stuff in Simon's safe about Rose.
What sort of stuff? I don't know I didn't get a chance to look at it properly.
Well, that should be your priority.
Yes, go back in there now! And perhaps you and I could pay a visit to an elderly relative.
What? A certain person who might be in a rest home.
Right on, sister.
Room 217 should be down here.
Why have you got those flowers? It's our cover.
If anyone's with our homeless person, we just say we have the wrong room.
Mother should be just along here.
What are you doing? That man, he's Bryce Pooley! He's a private investigator who does contract work for Mosely's.
Walks like a cop.
Well, he's gone now.
What if he comes back? Well, you go see where he's gone and I'll go talk to homeless guy.
No, Bryce will recognise me.
What do you suggest? You go see if he's gone.
Call me if he comes back.
OK.
Hello, I'm Elizabeth.
Who? I'm a friend.
What is it? It's me.
I still can't get any sense out of him.
I don't care.
Just do what you're paid for.
Elizabeth speaking.
Yeah.
He's coming back.
Shit.
Hey! Open up the van! - What the hell are you doing? - Taking him home.
How is that subtle? We could hardly talk to our friend with Bryce Pooley around.
What's she doing here? She's a friend.
I know her.
Said she'd call the cops.
No, she's not going to do that.
I don't like her.
Then you don't have to talk to her.
Eh? Come on! Open the van! Get in.
Hey, hey, what about what we talked about a nice hot meal.
And a drink.
Get in! Yeah? How the hell did that happen? All right.
Well, he can't have got far on foot.
Yeah, OK.
I'll see you soon.
I need to go out again.
What about your 4 o'clock? Put them off.
And if anyone wants to know where I am, it's personal.
Right.
Ganesh speaking.
It's me.
How did you get on with the elderly relative? Not too bad.
He's at my place now.
At your place? It seemed like the best way to do it.
Now, I want you to check something.
The man who was with Simon is Bryce Pooley.
He's a private investigator who works for Mosely's.
I've never heard of him.
Is that important? No.
I want to you to go into accounts payable, see if there are any payments to him.
Why? To see who is paying him! Got to go now.
I'm in the middle of cooking.
Ah, good.
Are you sure this is a good idea? I only had sherry and a very old bottle of Baileys.
No, I mean, don't we want him lucid? We want his cooperation and I promised.
Here we are.
You're one of the good ones.
Thank you.
We know you found Rose, my friend, when she was in the water.
Let him have something to eat.
You were the last person to see her and you said there was a bad man.
Who was he? You can have this when you answer me.
Tell me.
Now.
Oh, stop being a bully.
We do need to talk to you, about Rose.
She was our friend.
Her friend? Yes! Why don't you try the omelette, it'll be nicer hot.
We might need the bottle.
It's nice.
I'm glad you like it.
I'm sorry, we didn't even get properly introduced.
It's David.
Do you have another name? Quilter.
David Quilter.
Lovely.
How did they find you, Simon and Bryce? They were cops.
No, they weren't.
Simon's a lawyer.
Suits and cops, they're all in it together.
Could I get another drink? Certainly.
What are you doing? Finding out who the hell he is.
He's David Quilter.
He's a worry.
He's not well, and he's frightened.
Yeah.
Well, there's probably a damn good reason for that.
What is it? Stuff on Rose, and some dead girl.
Why is he carrying this around? I don't know.
What if he did something to both of them? Why would you think that? Why would he keep them otherwise? I don't know.
He is a little damaged.
He wouldn't be a homeless alkie otherwise.
We're all one step away from it, really.
Speak for yourself.
Hey! We're meant to be making him talk, not getting him pissed! He is my guest, not a prisoner.
And we need to show him a little respect.
So were we acting for Keith Cranston? It was personal.
Sounds juicy.
Does the firm do a lot of jobs on the side? You know how it is with lawyers; the old boys' network.
A favour for a friend, and then they owe you Usually it's a bottle of whisky.
Right.
On that note, how about a drink? Sorry, busy busy.
Goodnight, Charlie.
See ya, swotty.
Will Simon be gracing us with his presence tomorrow? I don't know.
Why not? Because he would have to tell me for me to know that.
That's not how it works.
At all.
Your job is to make him tell so you are always one step ahead.
Thanks for that.
What are you working on now? Briefs.
Is that all? I have to pull a whole heap of ancient files for Helen.
I'll be here for hours.
Oh.
I'm sorry, but I did try.
Not hard enough! I can hardly go through a safe with Krystle next door.
She does have eyes in the back of her head.
Why not go in now? She better not.
Why not? The system flags anyone coming in after hours; it'll get reported.
That's helpful! I've done my bit.
Like what? No one at Mosely's paid the PI.
They haven't used him in months.
So? If no one at Mosely's knows, Simon must have been acting alone.
All the more reason to go see what's in the safe.
I'm doing my best, and at least I'm not going round kidnapping people.
Who got kidnapped? Is he still here? He's asleep.
Homeless Guy is here? He's David now.
He is still freaky.
I'm sorry, but you kidnapped him? We could hardly talk to him there.
He was virtually a prisoner.
And maybe for good reason.
He's asleep now because he's drunk too much whisky.
It is a wee hitch.
If you're worried about getting in there after hours, why not put out a notice saying you are doing server maintenance? I'm not.
But you used to do it all the time, at quite inconvenient times.
I do it when necessary.
The point is if the system is down, there will be no security flags, and Jane can get into the safe.
I guess so.
Where have you been? Hi.
Just busy with a thing.
Scooby Doo thing? Sort of a work thing.
And I'm going to need to stay late tomorrow night as well.
What's the crisis this time? Just work for Simon.
Good old Simon, eh? Well, he is who I work for.
How was your firsts day shoot? Great.
But I've got to be up at 5 to get to location.
So night.
So, I checked it out this gang guy, this dead girl.
And what about them? This girl Sharon gets murdered, this guy Kingi Matai goes down for it, but he said he didn't kill her.
And you think it was David.
It's possible.
I suppose we could talk to this Kingi.
That might be a bit hard.
He died in prison in 2005.
Oh.
Maybe Homeless Guy was a crim, or inside.
He had this on him about a cop.
Yeah.
I just don't see the connection.
Well, maybe this guy Hilton Ford arrested him.
What was that? Are you all right? I saw her.
I saw her in her red dress.
There's nobody here except us.
She knows about me, but she still gives me the money.
She tells me to make it right.
Rose tells you? Why don't I get you something? A sandwich, or some sherry, then we could talk about it.
Lovely.
You said Rose gave you money.
Was that in your dream? It was real before.
When was that? When she came past, you know, that night.
She appeared like like an angel.
Here you go.
You could get some chips or something.
Thanks.
Have a good night.
It'll probably be better than mine.
Lot of people, you know, they don't even see you, they don't even know you're there, but I see them.
What time was this? 1800, 1815.
Another century? Early.
Then I saw her when it was dark.
And she knew him.
The bad, they prey on the good.
Bad man, suit man.
The bad man was in a suit? He didn't have a suit.
You just said he did.
This bad man, was he big or small? 190 maybe tattoo.
What kind of tattoo? Here.
This man in a suit, that's someone else? Yeah.
Was it Simon? Who? The guy who found you.
I don't know.
She was going away.
She was running.
I thought she was gone but then she was in the water.
And I couldn't get her out.
It wasn't supposed to go that way.
And she knows I screwed it.
She knows.
Maybe that's enough for tonight.
We can pick it up in the morning.
Hi.
Hi.
Bloody server is going to be down from 5.
Oh.
I don't know why IT don't realise that in real world people work after 5.
How's your cousin? Not the best, actually.
You didn't mention that at all? No, of course not.
Thanks.
How's the physio going? Nothing would keep you away from bridge.
Kat, I have another friend who's in a bit of bother.
Yeah.
I just need a little bit of background.
The name is David Quilter.
So it still hasn't chipped.
I got that done a week and a half ago.
Are you off already? Well, everything's shut down.
God, IT.
Do not get me started.
You don't like them? They are creepy for a star, never there when you need them, and if anything does go wrong, you turn it off and back on again.
How can that be a job? Mm.
They just sit there in that room, drinking V and eating liquorice and festering in their own filth.
Smells good.
It's nice to have someone to cook for.
When did your husband leave? How did you know I was even married? Well, you got no ring on your finger, but there's men's clothes in the wardrobe.
Are you checking up on me? Maybe.
My husband died, actually.
Bowel cancer.
You were there for him, though.
To be honest, things hadn't been the best between us.
But, yes, I was there.
Why is Sharon Rewiti and Kingi Matai important? Why do you want to know? I was just curious.
I mean, you don't keep things if they didn't mean something.
The clothes in the wardrobe.
I should throw them away, but it would feel wrong.
And you have helped us so much already, telling me about Rose.
I've taken the liberty of writing it up as some kind of statement.
I'm not talking to the cops.
No way.
Why do you hate them so much? I just do.
But you were a cop.
Who told you? It was a hunch, the way you described things and Linda was worried about my safety, so I checked.
Why did you leave the force? I had to.
Who is Hilton Ford? I don't want to talk about it.
You said Rose asked you to make it right.
Now, was that to do with her or someone else? I could help, if you want.
Rose would have wanted me to.
Psst.
Do you have to sneak up on me? Shush.
Come on.
We have exactly 30 minutes to do this.
I thought the system was down.
Fasi still has rounds.
Who? The security guy.
I'll be in my office if you need me Great.
Hey.
Why are you here? You said to if there was a problem.
Somebody saw you? No, no.
I found this.
Can you copy what's on it? Why me? Because the system is down.
Oh, true.
What's on it? I don't know, do I? Hey, dude.
Special delivery one lamb shwarma whoa.
Hey, Fasi.
This is Jane.
My girlfriend.
Hello.
Now I see why you're working late.
Yeah, it is a bit of a bonus.
Respect, dude.
Come in, take a load off.
I better get back out there.
Anyone could walk in here tonight.
Why did you order a kebab off the security guy? Because I'm hungry, and it's what we do.
And I need to stick to my routine.
My God! I left the safe door open! What about your mate? Fasi isn't strictly what I would call a mate.
Ganesh! Hey, Fasi.
Hey, where's the hottie? She had to go home.
Married? Something like that.
Hey, you know you were asking about how you could download porn for free.
- You said you didn't do that.
- Well, I don't usually.
Just sometimes.
Usually not at all.
But if you were interested, now would be a good time.
OK.
Sweet! Simon has press clippings, and witness statements from the cops.
That's how he knew about Homeless Guy.
David, please.
And there are all these notes like he's trying to work stuff out.
'Left bar at 9.
15, found 1.
30.
Wallet in bag, but no phone.
Where is phone?' Why does he want her phone?' Because he's covering his tracks.
You don't know that.
But Rose did leave the bar with him at 9.
15.
How do you know that? You can see it right here.
Really? You said Simon had the security footage from the client function place.
That was on the drive? Bingo.
Wait.
You watched that without us? I had time after the porno festival.
Man, that Fasi is a worry.
This is the first angle.
Why is it so grainy? Security cameras have terrible lenses, the compression algorithm Shh! Why shh.
There's no sound? There's Rose.
- Shit, where'd they go? - Wait.
They did go out together.
Yeah.
But he said she left alone.
Well, he lied.
And he doesn't come back I've watched it right through.
He leaves at 9.
15, and that is it.
Where was he? Search me.
So this is where Rose gave you the money? Yeah.
And where did you see the bad man? She was over there.
By that lamp post? Further.
By the second bin.
Right.
This is where you were seeping? It's good here.
Safe.
She was on at me, so I wrote it down.
All of it.
It could be nicer to read this at home? Yeah.
You have a visitor.
Says he knows you? Hi.
You see, I am her boyfriend.
Aroha didn't believe he knew you.
What a performance, to get in here.
Thanks for helping out.
No problem.
Why are you here? We wrapped early.
I was passing.
Thought I'd check out the death star for myself.
It's just, you can't really Hey, how's it going? Charlie, this is Ben.
Hi.
How are the letters going? They're nearly done.
Gidday.
Simon, this is Ben.
Ben, Simon.
So you're the guy I need to talk to.
I need to have a bit of a chat with you for overworking my girlfriend.
Sorry? Last night, she was here till all hours.
Well, Jane is very conscientious.
Why did you have to do that? What? I'm not allowed to come in here? I've hardly seen you.
We'll talk about this at home.
Suit yourself.
Someones shitty.
Why did you work last night? The server was down.
I forgot something, and then I actually went and had a drink with a friend.
You're using me as an excuse to go on the turps? Sorry.
Jane.
When you got the laptop out of the safe, you didn't look at anything else? No.
Right.
Well, you can finish up early today if you like.
Oh thanks.
I don't know what you thought you were doing this afternoon.
I wanted to see you.
Is that a crime? You were checking up on me! I was curious, I guess.
In my mind I thought he would be older, maybe greyer.
Simon? You do talk about him a lot.
Ben, come on.
That doesn't mean anything.
You are out with him every night.
What kind of bloke would I be if I didn't worry? I actually lied.
I'm really sorry.
I was doing Blue Rose stuff last night and I didn't tell you because I just I didn't want you to hassle me about it.
We had a lead about Rose.
Like whodunit? Maybe.
Look, Jane it's great that you care and all that, but it's like you don't even talk to me about what you're doing any more or ask how I'm doing.
How are you doing? Pretty good, actually.
Do you want to see some rushes after tea? I'd love to.
What are you making? The old el cheapo tofu spectacular.
Aw, my favourite.
I know.
This is all true? Yeah.
You poor thing.
Gutless, that's what I am.
You're not.
And after you've done this, I'd like you to see a doctor.
No point.
Don't say that.
My husband didn't see a doctor for a long time.
I thought he was complaining about nothing, and I knew he was having an affair, so I was less than sympathetic.
You didn't make him sick.
I could have done more; been more forgiving.
I suggest for a star, I type this up, make it look tidy.
Rose would like that.
You look very smart.
Right.
We're ready.
We really should get moving.
Where did you get this? OK, guys, that is the last time anyone tells the one about me and the traffic cop.
I've still got two days in charge, not too late to get you all posted to Invercargill.
David, have a seat, a drink.
No, thanks.
I just got something to say.
We're done with speeches, mate.
My name is David John Quilter.
I was a junior constable when I got approached about working undercover on operation Royal.
There was a gang dealing drugs, and the head guy was Kingi Matai.
He was going with this girl Sharon Rewiti, so I got close to her.
OK, mate, that's enough.
Ended up as Sharon's flatmate.
We did the odd line, had a few drinks.
She was a honey long dark hair, real sweet laugh.
She was one of the good ones.
But the officer I was reporting to, he said we needed to turn her.
I said it was too soon.
Bullshit.
You know it's not, because you were that officer.
You said I'd gotten too close, said I was losing perspective.
And you are a druggie and an alkie with big problems.
I was off my face when you busted into our place and pulled us in, me and Sharon.
Get him out of here.
You remember it? How you put the handcuffs on me, took us for a ride and put the hard word on Sharon.
The next thing, you were screwing her, telling her she was a whore, and you hit her.
And Sharon went down, and she never got up.
And you said it didn't matter; we'd pin it on Matai.
I helped you plant the evidence and Matai went away.
You said it was a result.
But not a day goes by that I don't think of Sharon, dead in the dark.
God forgive me.
In light of new allegations, a spokesperson for the Matai family said they wanted the case reopened, and are putting together a submission to the High Court to have the conviction quashed.
Retiring superintendent Hilton Ford has declined to comment on the allegations of his involvement in the death of Sharon Rewiti.
Whoa.
No wonder your mates messed up.
David was amazing today.
Very brave.
Where is he? He did have a couple of drinks after to calm his nerves.
He's having a lie down.
How are you going with that? I can't get it to charge.
Can't you do something? Maybe it needs a new battery.
Well, go and get one! Linda, calm down.
Perhaps David can watch the security footage see if it jogs his memory about the man in the suit.
Sure.
I'll see if he's awake.
Christ, when did that happen? Do they think it's suspicious? I see.
Thanks for calling.
Is everything all right? Some bad news about my cousin.
He died.
How? He drowned.
Suicide, apparently.
Oh my God.
I am really sorry.
Yeah, it's a shock.
Anyway Jane Whiting from Whiting Hood called.
What did she want? She was just wondering if you were happy with Mrs Cranston's changes to the property settlement.
I guess we can live with them Here.
If you want to put them in.
Work, damn you, work.
You do know that talking to appliances is an early sign of madness.
How can I help? Helen has a problem with her internet.
Has she tried turning it off and then on again? Huge thanks to everyone who donated.
