[panting]
[Jorun] No, Said. Stop!
-Stay there. Stay there.
-[officer] Back up. Please stay back.
[solemn music playing]
Come on.
[Said sighs]
Elma! Elma!
[cries] Oh, Elma.
Oh, Elma.
[Tomas] I promise you
we'll find Alicia too.
[mobile phone rings]
[woman] So, he left straight away
after locking you in there?
Do you know where he went?
To see the other girl.
-[dad] Mm-hmm.
-Okay.
-Tomas, Valter keeps on ringing…
-[woman] Did he say anything?
-Jorun, not now.
-I know.
But he's ringing from the hospital,
and he's saying that… [inhales]
…Lejla has been drugged by Frick.
[dramatic music playing]
[monitor beeping]
[music fades]
-Hi.
-[Valter] Hi.
[Tomas] How's she doing?
They're saying she's stable.
But I don't know.
[Tomas] Has she said anything?
I should have kept an eye on her.
[sighs]
I'm a fucking useless father to her.
[Tomas] No.
You rescued her.
Again.
Now it's your job to find that bastard.
[gloomy sting music playing]
[laughter]
[Jim] Oh, look, here's the constable.
Our boy in blue. Good day to you.
Why are you loitering around here?
You do know there are
better hunting grounds outside of town?
-Depends on what you're hunting.
-Is that so?
Yeah, I've heard that paedophiles
often hang around in built-up areas.
-[Jim laughs]
-Paedophiles?
You know,
the ones who abduct little girls.
You lot won't do anything about it,
so we're stepping in.
And the bastard better hope
we don't find him first.
-Right? Right, huh? He's in for it.
-[laughter]
I think there are better places to hunt
paedophiles than outside a police station.
You sure about that?
All of you, get out of here.
-Tomas, come on.
-What is it?
[mocking] "Tomas, come on".
[all laughing]
-They've found Frick's cabin.
-What?
-Yeah.
-Why didn't you call to let me know?
You were coming anyway.
Yeah, but you could
have fucking called me.
-But…
-I told you to.
[tense music playing]
-Hi.
-[Jorun] Hi.
How's Lejla?
[Tomas] She'll be fine.
-[Björn] Have you taken her statement?
-No.
Take a look at this.
Blocked in.
What about buses and trains?
[Björn] We have people out
since last night. And roadblocks.
-No trace at all?
-No.
[boot slams shut]
Ah, so he hasn't left Granås, perhaps?
-Mm-hmm.
-[Björn] Follow me.
[gloomy string music plays]
-[Tomas] Hi, there.
-Oh, hi.
-[Tomas] Can I go inside?
-Yeah, we're done. You can go in.
[Tomas] Thanks.
[camera beeps, snaps]
-Hi.
-[officer] Hi.
[music fades]
-Can I, uh…
-Yeah, go ahead.
Hmm.
Right, Lejla. It's not
a very nice cocktail you were given.
I found high levels
of the substance ketamine,
which can be used as an anaesthetic.
Also, a sleeping agent called zolpidem.
So, well, it's amazing
that you even managed to stand up.
I'd like to keep you in here
for a while for observation.
-No.
-[Valter] Yeah, but…
There's still some risk of complications.
Heart failure, seizures,
rapid changes in your condition.
You could experience nightmares,
and you might act irrationally.
A chat with our psychologist
could be helpful.
That could be good, Lejla.
I want to go home.
[straw slurps]
Tomas is here.
Is that okay?
[Tomas] Judging from the books
that we found in Frick's flat,
he seems to have
a sick fascination for child abductors.
And your file seems to be high on his list
of personal favourites, so to speak.
He seems to have a fixation with Granås.
We found lots of his drawings
had themes around these parts.
Including this farm, Valter.
How the hell can a maniac like that
get his parole approved?
Yeah. The psychiatric hospital
said he was rehabilitated.
But the first thing he did
when he was released
was to come here
and pick a victim, Alicia.
So, then he met you, he must have thought
all his Christmases had come at once.
Unless that's why
he came here in the first place.
The girl we found in the flat says
that Frick talked about someone else.
So, we think he has another site
where he's holding Alicia.
But you met him and went for a drink.
What did you talk about?
[Lejla] Alicia.
And, uh…
The latest one.
Elma.
Then he had some theories
about the kidnapper that I thought were…
[sighs] …well, uh, interesting.
Then you went home with him?
Yes.
I did that.
Was that by choice?
There's one more thing.
The flat in Mora was full of stuff
relating to Lejla.
Pictures, and articles,
or… newspaper cuttings.
Most of that can be found on the Internet,
but there were some personal items too.
Your old school books, for example.
Isla doesn't remember him taking
anything from your room.
-He's been in her room before?
-Yes, most likely.
Stay there.
[tense music playing]
[Lejla] He's taken it.
It was here, the box.
[sighs]
Are you sure it's okay to take
all of those at once? Eh?
Lejla…
[Lejla] I'm going to stay in the US.
I can't live in Sweden.
It's suffocating here.
[gloomy string music playing]
[man] Alicia!
[Said] Alicia!
Alicia!
[echoes] Alicia!
[breathing deeply]
[faint banging]
-[sharp distortion]
-[gasps softly]
[banging]
[indistinct muttering]
[banging]
[indistinct muttering continues]
[flames crackling]
Wear your coat, Lejla.
Otherwise, you'll get cold.
[flames crackle]
[mobile phone rings]
[ringing continues]
[Said] Lejla?
Hi, it's Said.
-Uh-huh…
-Sorry, did I wake you?
Mm.
I heard that you were home
from the hospital. Are you okay, Lejla?
Yes, I'm fine.
Okay.
Shall I… Should I ring…
We'll talk tomorrow, so you can rest.
No, no. I'm just a bit tired.
Hey, did he say something? Frick?
Anything about Alicia?
He doesn't have Alicia.
Sorry?
She's with Ecki.
I saw him.
By the fire.
Fire? Who's Ecki?
Hello? Lejla?
Who's that? Have you seen her?
Are you making stuff up?
[call disconnects]
Hello?
[scanner whirring]
Where are you going?
I need to see Tomas.
-Is he expecting you?
-It's important. Please.
Who is Ecki?
[sighs]
It's like this.
Lejla has been through a lot of stuff,
and all of it still affects her, even now.
So, she identifies with
everything that's happened.
She's incredibly good at what she does,
but we're trying to conduct
a police investigation.
And I have no doubt that if we find Frick,
then we'll find Alicia.
You were sure on other occasions, though.
Okay.
I'll put it another way.
The most likely scenario
is that Frick has Alicia,
not some ghost from the past.
We'll find Frick.
There's an arrest warrant out,
so just try to hang on a bit longer.
At the start of the investigation,
you wasted the first 48 hours on me.
You still have no idea
who Louise was having an affair with.
Her mobile's still missing.
Alicia's missing.
You talk about a warrant while
you drink coffee. You having a laugh?
Can't you just talk to Lejla?
She knows something, I'm sure.
Where the fuck were you?
Hey.
[sighs] It's fucking icy.
You're wasted.
[laughs] You're the one who's wasted.
What the…
[Jim pants]
-What the hell's this?
-[mutters indistinctly]
[Tage] Blood?
What have you done?
Huh?
[dark music plays]
Hunting.
[both grunting]
[Jim groans]
Give me your coat.
[sombre music rises]d
[spits]
Go and get yourself clean.
And then you go to bed.
-Did you hear me?
-[Jim panting]
[music fades]
[indistinct office chatter]
-[Lejla] Hi.
-[Kristina] I heard what happened.
Oh, how horrible for you.
Yeah.
How are you?
-It's, uh, under control.
-[door closes]
[Said] Thank you for coming.
So, I went to see Tomas,
and he doesn't believe in
your theory at all.
So, we'd love to hear it
straight from you.
What makes you so certain?
Certain?
Mm. What you said to me yesterday.
Uh…
You said that
it isn't Frick who's got her.
You said there was a man by the fire.
Ecki. Who is that?
What, so you're saying I…
-Did I say that to you?
-When we talked last night.
Hmm. Well, sorry,
but I don't remember saying that.
[sighs]
Okay, so what do you think?
Does Frick have her or not?
Yesterday, I was pretty out of it.
-What the fuck? Are you joking?
-I'm sorry…
Look, I apologise if I made it sound like
I may have some kind of answer for you.
[door opens]
[door slams shut]
I wish I could help her.
I know that.
[tense music playing]
What is that?
[liquid dripping]
[music intensifies]
[music fades]
[camera shutter clicks]
[Jorun] Daniel Frick.
The hospital has confirmed it.
[man] An incision through
the heart muscle, drained of blood.
[Said] What do you want me to tell you?
I was here at work.
-[officer] When?
-[Said] Before we called you.
-[Jorun] Tomas, what is it?
-[Tomas] What the hell do you think?
How are we going to find Alicia,
now he's been murdered?
How is it possible
an entire force fails to find Frick?
When the fucking bastard who did that
clearly had no problem whatsoever?
You should calm down right now!
[car door opens]
[door closes]
[gloomy string music playing]
-[Tomas] Where's Jim?
-[man] He's through there.
[woman] Come on now! One more.
Come on now!
[upbeat music playing loudly]
-[grunts] Take it.
-Was it you, you bastard?
What the fuck's wrong with you?
[laughs]
You've lost the plot.
Not guilty. [laughs]
Not guilty.
[laughing]
What is it?
Where were you
and your hunting crew last night?
-Huh?
-What's going on here?
Hi, Papa.
He's gonna tell me
what the fuck he did last night!
Why? What went on last night?
Someone was murdered.
What have I got to do with that?
Are you even allowed to be here?
Why are you fucking so dumb?
Tomas! Do you have anything on him?
Huh?
[chuckles]
Then I would suggest that you leave.
Go on, then.
-Right now.
-[Jim chuckles]
Listen to Papa. [grunts]
-You should watch yourself.
-[Jim laughs]
-Shut your mouth. Shut it!
-You shut it!
I'm going to shut that fucking mouth
of yours, boy, count on it!
[locker clatters]
[tense music playing]

-[Tomas] Get those analysed.
-What is that?
-The boots Jim was wearing.
-Have you been to Jim's?
-Did you have a warrant to go there?
-There's blood on them.

[Valter] Oh, it's cold outside.

I found a flight to take me back.
Via Munich on Thursday.
Okay.
So, you're taking that one?
But, uh, wouldn't it be wise
to take the doctor's advice?
And you know, you could, uh,
speak to a psychologist before you leave?
No. It's okay.
I've tried my best, but it doesn't feel
like I'm getting anywhere.
I thought I'd be able to make
a difference with the investigation.
I thought I could solve the case.
It doesn't matter.
I'm going to leave.
Yeah. I understand.
Understood.
[sighs]
Here you are.
[Lejla] There's no sender.
-Let's see.
-Mm.
[Valter] Hm.
No, no, no, no.
Get your hands off. Don't touch it.
Yeah, okay.
Is that really necessary?
[ominous music rises]
What is it?
Can you tell me what it is?
Is that Alicia's?
No, it's mine.
-[Tomas] Was it lying in the letterbox?
-[Valter] Yeah, some nerve.
From now on,
I want surveillance here 24/7.
[music fades]
[Tomas] I can sort that out.
But we have to confirm
that it really is Lejla's hair.
[Lejla] I'm completely sure.
That's my scrunchie there.
He took it when he cut my hair.
That was the last thing he did
before it was meant to end.
I really think it isn't Frick
who took Alicia.
[Tomas] So, how do you suggest
that we move on with this?
Well, there's an investigation
that you could start with, though.
Twenty-two years worth of material.
-That didn't go anywhere.
-[Valter] No.
But with a fresh pair of eyes on it,
you could actually get somewhere,
if you would care to open
the investigation again.
Come on, Tomas, this isn't a competition.
We all need to go through
every bit of evidence.
Including you, Valter.

-[Tomas] Yeah.
-Could you not do any more?
-First of all, I've already…
-We'll check it out.
Great.
Then there's Frick.
Frick?
[Lejla] He was slaughtered like an animal.
Hung up there, drained of blood.
This is pure hatred.
Frick tried to be Ecki.
And he was punished.
So, you believe that
your perpetrator murdered Frick?
Mm.
Good job.
[office phone ringing]
[sniffs] Hmm.
Good morning.
[footsteps approaching]
-Hello.
-[Valter] Björn will give you a lift home.
Then he'll keep you company.
Is that okay?

[Björn] Well, I wanted a job
where I could be outdoors.
All the men in my family are in the army.
But I thought it was too destructive
to be in the military.
But then I spoke to my grandma,
and she said,
"Why don't you become a police officer?"
Here in Granås.
Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait there.
I need to, uh, check the house first.
You just stay there.
Yeah.
Is it okay if I take my coat off?
[laughs sarcastically] Very funny.
Right!
-Hello, there. Hello, everyone.
-[officers] Hi.
So, I've been asked to, uh, come out
of my retirement for a short while
so I can assist you all
with the ongoing Alicia investigation.
So, I think it would be a good idea
to kick things off? Tomas?
I should run through your investigation?
No, you don't have to.
What if I start,
and you take over afterwards, all right?
Let's do that, shall we?
To start, as briefly as possible,
I'll take you through
the sequence of events as they unfolded.
So, let's revisit an earlier time,
or more specifically go to November 2002.
Which is when
Lejla Ness is found in Granås.
Nine months earlier,
she was reported missing
by her mother, Milena,
from Vårby, Stockholm.
Six months later,
her mother is found dead.
The autopsy shows that
she's taken an overdose of sedatives.
[Milena] She went to school
in the morning. I said goodbye.
I was working late.
[officer] Can you account for
where you've been this past year?
[Milena] Mostly at home in Vårby.
A short cruise to Åland.
Then a friend,
he was working on a construction site,
and we went there to visit him.
[officer] A male acquaintance?
Uh, right, who was that?
-Where is he?
-[Milena] Bosnia.
[officer] Okay. When was this visit?
April, May.
It was… what was it called again?
-Vatra.
-"Vatra"?
-[Milena] That big fire.
-What fire? Oh, Walpurgis Night?
[Milena] Yes, Walpurgis.
-[Lejla sighs]
-[officer] Okay, and where was this?
[Milena] Up north.
I can't remember the name of the place.
He was renting a small cabin for us.
Lejla wanted to see Mora.
We drove there. It was quite close.
[recording stops]
[quick steps descending stairs]
[Björn] Wait there!
Where are you going? Lejla!
[Valter] Lejla talked about those
children's drawings,
and she thought they were made
by three different kids.
That would support the theory
that this guy is a serial offender.
On the other hand,
the murder of Louise is inconsistent
with the rest of it.
There has to be
a completely different motive.
[Jorun] What about Frick's murder?
If it is as Lejla says…
Whatever Lejla says,
we shouldn't rule Jim out
until the forensic analysis
of his boots come back.
[Jorun] Mm.
It was elk blood.
It's in the report.
-[Tomas] Ah…
-[Jorun] Mm.
[dramatic music playing]
[Valter] Well, now that
the investigation has been reopened,
we might as well
go through everything thoroughly
right from the start.
-[music swells]
-[Valter continues indistinctly]
[music fades]

Hi, Tomas.
