Valor (2017) s01e05 Episode Script

Full Battle Rattle

1 Previously on Valor You're the first Special Ops chick I ever met.
How do you control yourself around so many hot, sweaty men? - Only hard part's the smell, sir.
- (LAUGHTER) - Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! - They have the package.
(SCREAMS) - GALLO: The prisoner who got away is Davis Goundry.
- Killed in action in 2014.
They told us we were targeting a Somali national that night.
Instead we get an American soldier.
Move! Or I will shoot through you.
MADANI: Why would Richard want him dead? We lied in our debriefs.
We made that decision together.
HASKINS: Jimmy Kam's been captured along with Sergeant Hendrix.
My name is Khalid Samatar.
I'm the man who has your soldiers.
His brother is who he really cares about.
My guess, he would take that deal.
The prisoner exchange is a go.
- Let's get our boys back.
- Hooah! GALLO: If all goes well, 36 hours from now - we'll have Jimmy back.
- MADANI: It will go well.
- (GROANS) - We got a problem back here.
The prisoner seems to be convulsing.
What's happening back there? It's pretty bad.
I think he's dead.
MADANI: Are you sure he's dead? COOGAN: He seems pretty friggin' gone, ma'am.
THEA: There's no pulse.
GALLO: Maybe you can get his heart started again.
DARZI: Try CPR.
THEA: And there should be a steroid shot in the med kit.
DARZI: And one and two and three and four - and ten, and one - He's not breathing.
The med kit is not designed for a heart attack.
If his brother's dead, there's no way Khalid goes through with the prisoner exchange.
- We're fully aware, Ms.
Madani.
- And four.
We lost him.
COOGAN: Mustaf's dead.
GALLO: Anchor Zero-Six.
We got a problem up here.
MADANI (ON RADIO): Sir, we need to abort and then try and make a new deal with Khalid.
We've never been this close to getting our guys.
We know Khalid's negotiator will be at the meeting spot.
That is worth a lot.
How much time until the exchange? We got three hours.
That's just enough time to get there.
No time to stop and regroup.
We're gonna have to solve this in the air.
If Khalid finds out his brother is dead, those POWs Renegade One-Two.
Renegade One-Two.
Do not, I repeat, do not abort.
Proceed to the airstrip.
And then do what, sir? We'll work on that.
Stand by for an update.
THEA: This is insane.
I need to call Magnus.
Who's Magnus? Director of CIA Special Activities.
My boss, Darzi.
He's good with these kinds of situations.
Disasters, you mean? No.
Crazy-ass solutions.
Two years ago, we did an exfil in Kazakhstan, the guy got us, and the asset, out safely.
Operators call him “The Resuscitator.
” Because he saves operations that go sideways.
Something tells me this qualifies.
Right this way, Director.
The colonel is expecting you.
Outstanding.
You got lucky.
I was on a golf weekend in Atlanta.
Think I hit nearly every sand trap on the course.
We have been running some contingency scenarios while you were en route.
We think that the best Not concerned with those.
Sir, our team is only two hours from the airstrip.
I know.
I've got my own briefers.
Don't need a backgrounder from some kid born on third thinkin' he hit a triple, Porter.
I can assure you that my mother has nothing to do with my role here.
I am absolutely sure you believe that.
And you know that saying about workhorses and show horses, right? I wonder which one you are.
Gentlemen.
Director, welcome.
Colonel Haskins, it is an honor to meet you, sir.
I've always wanted to work with your unit.
All right.
Well, let me bring you up to speed.
Oh, I'm pretty clear.
The prisoner is no longer breathing, so we've got a little bit of a situation on our hands.
That's all right.
We'll whip it into shape.
But for this to work, I need us to be absolutely clear: Those aviators are all yours.
I'm in command of the ground operators from here on out.
Well, we've drawn up a number of possible plans.
I'm leaning toward the capture and interrogate maneuver.
Value to that, but I hate people.
Too many headaches.
That negotiator's our only lead - to finding Sergeants Kam and Hendrix.
- Exactly.
That's why we need him to make the proof-of-life call for us.
FaceTime, that's what we agreed on, isn't it? Yes.
Well, then we just need to get the negotiator's phone.
NSA triangulates the call, then we know where to find them.
No headaches at all.
But how are we gonna do our proof-of-life call when the guy isn't alive? Oh, we just play a little “show me yours before I show you mine”" There are still some moving pieces to work out.
Let's get started.
You all right, Madani? Clear headed? Don't worry, it's just us on this channel.
I told you, I have a prescription for those pills.
And I told you, no way you should be taking those in the cockpit.
I got us through the fog, didn't I? I'm flying fine.
That's not the point.
You don't pop pills in my helo, or in my unit.
We're gonna talk long and hard about this, as soon as this mission's done.
And until then, you make sure no one else sees that bottle.
This day's enough of a Charlie-Foxtrot as is.
Yes, sir.
How long do you think they'll have us flying without a plan? Command's still working on it.
In the meantime, we gotta stay fluid.
- Trust our guts.
- (CHUCKLES) What? I just I'm just not sure my gut's worth trusting.
Last time I did, it was the wrong choice.
You mean Goundry? If he'd flipped sides, if he was working with Khalid, then we shouldn't have saved him.
We should've been helping Richard.
That's still a real big if.
It would answer a lot of questions, wouldn't it? Okay.
Let's just finish this mission, get our guys.
We'll handle all the other suck stateside.
HASKINS: Renegade One-Two, Renegade One-Two.
This is Anchor Zero-Six.
We have a plan.
We have a friend from Langley here with us.
We're gonna walk you through the new op.
Good evening, Renegade Elements.
It's always a pleasure to be working with the best.
The plan here is simple.
You will follow through on the prisoner exchange, with one slight twist.
We're all aware the prisoner is still dead, right? HASKINS: Renegade One-Two, time is of the essence here.
Roger that, sir.
Just trying to keep it loose.
- Tighten it up.
- Since Khalid's brother Mustaf is indeed no longer with us, one of you will need to impersonate him at the exchange.
Put on his clothes, get black-bagged to conceal your identity from the negotiator.
Now, the deal is that we swap proof-of-life videos first, then deliver the prisoners at a separate location.
Khalid's negotiator's gonna be surprised that we brought the brother to the airstrip.
We're gonna use this to get him on tilt, then incentivize him to verify proof of life first.
That's mission critical.
The negotiator demanded one Black Hawk only at the exchange, engines off.
The other helos will drop their Delta Force operators one klick away.
They will move on foot to the airstrip.
Meantime, get the negotiator to make that video call.
As soon as he does, our Delta Team will break cover and will apprehend the negotiator to secure that phone.
That's the key to finding Kam and Hendrix's location.
What are our, uh, rules of engagement? Nothing but flash bangs, unless they threaten deadly force.
MADANI: Since he's dead, who's going to play the brother? Since we only get one helo at the airstrip, it's got to be somebody on your bird.
Mustaf is six-foot, 190.
Gallo, Ramirez, you're the only ones who fit the description.
Let us know what you decide.
I'm fully aware this is unorthodox.
But on Khalid's timeline it's what we've got.
All right, here's the deal.
Ramirez, since you're gonna be in the jumpsuit, Bautista, - I want you on the hand - That won't be necessary.
I'm gonna play the dead brother.
Sir, personally, I would feel more comfortable with a ground operator out there.
Ramirez is the best shot we have.
Why take away his rifle and put a bag over his head? It needs to be Ramirez.
We have two pilots for a reason.
That's a redundancy.
Besides, we'll be on the ground when I'm doing it.
Look, if Madani's even agreeing with me, I think you know I'm right.
Not to mention, Ramirez has training in close combat; you don't.
This isn't a debate.
We need shooters at the ready.
I'm getting under that hood.
Hey.
Do you want to step in here? The man left it up to Gallo and Ramirez.
If Mission Control doesn't care, then neither do I.
GALLO: Good.
Then we're done here.
Renegade One-Two.
Decision's made.
I'll play the brother.
Negotiator's six mikes out, people.
Let's get into position.
(PHONE RINGS) What is it? Due respect, sir, but this plan could go wrong in so many ways.
I am trusting you to make sure that it doesn't.
After completely icing me out of the planning process.
I know this is your first time in the field.
I'm here to clean up your mess, Thea.
That's why you called me.
I need you to execute this plan and get that phone by whatever means necessary.
Yes, sir.
I'll get it done.
And you're clear on the secondary objective? We have every reason to believe Khalid stored it wherever the prisoners are.
Yes, sir.
I have the equipment to secure it.
Outstanding.
Coogan's right, you know.
Makes no sense, you doing this.
- Decision's made.
- Okay.
Just help me understand why.
We'll add it to our stateside suck list.
Are you trying to prove something? I'm trying to set something right for Jimmy.
It's not your fault he was captured.
It's no one's fault.
I let him down before.
Today, I finally have a chance to make that right.
I'm taking it.
THEA: Khalid's negotiator's half a klick out, people! - Let's move! - (EXHALES) I need you to take these.
Anything happens to me out there, you make sure my mom gets these.
Gallo That's an order, Madani.
Yes, sir.
You're flight lead now.
Get back in that pilot's seat.
(EXHALES) (EXHALES) (GASPING) Wake up.
Khalid wants you clean for the camera.
What are you talking about, Dauud? What camera? (SNIFFS) Wash your faces.
This is big day.
You should pray to Allah for his many blessings.
They're gonna do a proof of life.
(PANTING) Thea.
(WHISTLES) Thea.
You know, you give people hell all the time.
I mean, you've been giving me hell since day one.
Yeah.
What do you say we go give these guys some hell together? I'd say you need to work on your pep talks.
And here I was, trying to bury the hatchet.
Let's get you bagged.
And give him an earpiece.
(GRUNTS) Here, take that.
(GRUNTS) Well, now, I'd say that's an improvement.
The brother had a limp in his left leg.
Give me a limp, Captain.
(PANTING) JIMMY: That's the chip indicator, and right behind it is the oil level sight glass.
And that's the tail rotor gearbox, right? Yes, ma'am.
That can be a real pain in the ass.
Sir.
Now, I always keep spare electric tape in my flight bag.
You'd be surprised how dollar store tape - can solve million-dollar problems.
- (CHUCKLES) You know, most pilots aren't interested in how the helos work, just how fast they go.
Yeah, it's a good point.
But can she go any faster? Sorry I'm interrupting your weekly technical talks.
Heard you were looking for me, Sergeant.
Good evening, sir.
I will see you two bright and early.
Good night, sir.
Dismissed.
(SNIFFS, GRUNTS) Did you, uh, get a chance to review the mission brief, sir? Read it twice.
It's kind of my job.
It's a little light on details, wouldn't you say? Yeah.
CIA's always sparse with specifics.
No, no.
Not like this.
We have zero intel on this Somali prisoner.
Zero.
You telling me that's not a first? I don't feel good about this one.
Look, if you have a problem, Sergeant, you should've brought that up to Officer Richard in the briefing.
Well, you're the flight lead.
It's (CHUCKLES) kind of your job.
If I have a problem, you have a problem, right? It's just nerves, man.
All right? Look, you want to grab a beer, catch a ball game, I'm all in.
But you need to talk about your feelings, go to Jess.
Or I can sub you out.
I'll see you tomorrow at 06.
All right.
(PANTING) Stay there.
(SPEAKS ARABIC) (SPEAKS ARABIC) English is okay.
Uh, you brought Khalid's brother here? He's not well.
I didn't want to put him through another flight after this.
It's my gift to you.
It's a gesture of good faith.
Mm.
Khalid told me to show you this and to tell you, if this goes wrong, there is much, much more he can do to hurt your country.
A domino.
Is that supposed to mean something to me? MAGNUS: The backup ground operators in place and ready to converge? 20 yards till position.
So far, so good.
The backup team is in place.
We are a go.
Bring him over.
My prisoner is right here, in person.
Yours are God knows where.
You verify first.
Or did I fly all this way for nothing? (SOFT CLINKING) (CHUCKLING) Khalid's guests are, uh, alive and well.
MAGNUS: Backup team is standing by.
They'll move as soon as we've got the proof of life.
You see for yourself.
I believe it is your turn now.
He made the call.
Time for the operators to move.
We need that phone.
Hold tight.
We have a problem.
Tango, ten o'clock.
That one of Khalid's guys? He posted a lookout right in the operator's path.
We're all looking at the same monitor, Porter.
CAG OPERATOR: We have eyes on him, sir.
He hasn't spotted us.
- How do we proceed? - HASKINS: Do not proceed.
That lookout sees you, he calls Khalid Our guys are as good as dead.
Reposition and take the airstrip from the south.
- Oh, no, that will take too long.
- You got a better idea? Backup team will reposition.
We need more time.
I'd like to see our guys again.
No! La, la, la.
I gave you proof of life.
Now you give mine.
My people are saying that I need to take a photo of that screen.
I'm not authorized to do the I.
D.
(SPEAKS ARABIC) Then why are you the one here? U.
S.
government.
Lot of bureaucracy.
What do you want me to say? Show me his face now.
- I need you to take out your phone - No! This is not what we agreed on! MADANI: Weapons are out! Things are going south! We can take 'em if we need to.
Targeted and ready to bang-bang.
COOGAN: Yeah, Gallo's in the way of the target.
If this gets hairy, he could get clipped.
So he can move.
No.
He takes one step, they're gonna open fire.
(PANTING) Anchor O-Six, permission to engage? MAGNUS: Reaper feed image isn't giving us the detail we need.
Chief Madani has the clearest view.
She makes the call.
Permission to engage, Madani? (INHALES) COOGAN: Captain Gallo, what the hell are you doing? (PANTING) Cover me.
Engage! CAG OPERATOR: Lookout is smoked, too, sir.
Backup team moving up now.
Backup team moving in.
- Gunmen down.
- Situation defused.
How's Gallo? He's still down.
(PANTING) THEA: Captain Gallo has secured the phone.
- (SOFT BEEPING) - NSA is tracing the video call.
Should have their location shortly.
Khalid will expect to hear from the negotiator, confirming his brother is alive.
Every minute that he doesn't get that call is a minute that he could get spooked and cut bait.
Fully aware.
They're working as fast as they can.
Granola? I like to eat small meals every two hours.
Keeps the mind sharp and the energy up.
(MECHANICAL TRILLING, BEEPING) She no longer lies From what I can see I heard it once The negotiator had a domino.
Just like Khalid in the video, just like Goundry.
Brings up a hell of a lot of questions we have no answers to.
- Well, you don't seem very concerned.
- Right now, I'm more concerned about why you didn't call that shot.
Coogan is many things, but he's a pro.
He wouldn't have hit me.
You're right.
Happy? My gut said they should shoot, but just But you didn't.
You second-guessed yourself.
The Madani I know doesn't flinch.
She's kind of a stone cold badass.
I just keep replaying it in my head, that night, making the wrong call.
Wrong or right, you saved my life on that mission.
The only reason I'm here is 'cause of your gut.
So who knows? Maybe it ain't so bad.
Yeah.
Maybe.
So stop replaying.
Anything like today happens again, you take the shot, you hear me? THEA: We got Hendrix and Kam's location.
Let's get in the air.
Anchor Zero-Six, thisis Renegade One-Two.
We're moving.
(DISTANT SHOUTING IN ARABIC, GLASS BREAKING) CRANK: What the hell's going on out there? Can you understand what they're saying? Something about moving us.
(MEN SPEAKING ARABIC) Something about a small pearl? Okay, we got to think this through.
All right? We made a proof-of-life video, that much we know, so maybe they're getting ready to hand us over, and it could be to our guys, or it could be to someone else, maybe ISIS.
You think we're being sold? You know how valuable American soldiers are to ISIS? Alive - or dead? - Or the deal could have gone bad.
They don't sound happy out there.
(GRUNTING) And if our guys ever find this place, they'll find this message.
Maybe they can figure out what it means.
Okay.
They're coming our way.
Hurry! (PANTING) - Tokyo? - It's for my wife.
- What's it mean? - (PANTING) Hope.
Renegade One-Two, on the ground.
This is Renegade One-One.
Roll the You think they're here? MADANI: This is where they traced the call to.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER) Is that lead? Is there something radioactive in there? Nothing you need to worry about.
Let's move! I never get this.
They think with some batting practice, we're not gonna find what's on these hard drives? We'll bag and tag on the way out.
Clear the rooms.
Sergeants Kam and Hendrix are somewhere in here.
Bravo Team.
(SIGHS) (SIGHS) Room clear.
(SIGHS) Clear.
(PANTING) THEA: Our guys aren't here.
You can't clear rooms that quick.
Double back, make it thorough.
HASKINS: Keep the chatter to a minimum, Renegade One-Two.
Let the operators do their job.
- The hell are you doing? - They're rushing.
- Our guys could be anywhere.
- They need to slow down.
- You heard Haskins.
- They're in there! What is going on with you? (SIGHS) You did not put Jimmy in that hospital.
You know that, right? He felt that something was off about the mission.
I could have pushed for more intel, but I didn't.
I dismissed him.
You had no idea what would happen.
He needed me to step up that day, and I didn't.
So I've been trying to be a little more of that person lately.
You mean, a leader? Something like that.
Clear Clear They were here.
It's unlikely Khalid's guys are writing in English.
What the hell is “Tokyo”? It's the capital of Japan, sir.
Hey, N-G with the jokes.
We found Sergeant Kam and Hendrix's cell.
No sign of them.
Anchor Zero-Six, that's the last room.
They're not here.
Over.
Damn it! That's not the last room.
What do you have? I pulled the blueprints, and I cross-referenced through my intel.
You have blueprints on a 50-year-old hospital in a failed state? I have my resource networks, too.
I saw something on Ramirez's body cam.
About ten yards back, there should have been a door right here.
All I saw was a cabinet.
Now, if they go back, and they move that thing, I think they'll find a false wall.
You heard Lieutenant Porter.
Let's see what these guys are hiding.
Let's go.
Clear.
Clear.
They're not here.
(GROANS) Hey.
We're going to find them.
We won't stop until we do.
Darzi, do a sweep.
Five mikes, I want to be in the air.
(SIGHS) HASKINS: All right, operators, head back to the birds.
We are wheels up and patrolling the A-O.
Sergeants Kam and Hendrix may be close.
Nothing's here.
(PANTING) I'd like to keep some operators here.
There's a lot of intel left behind.
HASKINS: Roger.
Renegade One-Two, stay and collect.
Renegade One-One team, head to your bird.
The Little Birds will be overhead in support.
Everything in this room is need-to-know moving forward.
Understood? Director, I need to speak with you privately.
(BEEP) Sir, the secondary objective was gone.
All of it.
MAGNUS: But it was there? High confidence.
I've got an I.
E.
D.
! - Where? - COOGAN: In the hospital? THEA: Outside in the truck.
Darzi! Get out of there! Get your ass out of there! I've got a hostile! MAGNUS: Thea, don't fire.
THEA: Darzi, run! (EXPLOSION) Comms and body cam was down.
Give me the Reaper feed.
Can't see a damn thing down there.
(BEEPING) - (BEEPING VOLUME INCREASES) - Nora! Shutting down.
(BEEPING STOPS) I think shrapnel got me.
How bad is it? Darzi's hurt.
Come on.
GALLO: There we go.
(GRUNTING) (PANTING) The blast took out the radio.
Is that something we can fix? MADANI: I don't think so.
(BEEPING) I can't feel my toes.
You're gonna be okay.
Get him a fentanyl pop! No, the fire took out the med kit.
We've got to get out of here ASAP.
I think the blast hit the tail rotor.
He's got to get medical attention.
We can't fly without it.
(GROANING, PANTING LOUDLY) I'll go take a look.
Hang in there, buddy.
Okay, good news, bad news.
There's no damage to the tail rotor, but the chip wire's been cut.
Can you fix it? Uh, depends.
“Depends” is not gonna cut it.
We burn time, Darzi bleeds out.
I got this.
- Hey.
Hey.
Look at me.
- (GRUNTING) We don't really get to shoot the breeze, do we? You got daughters, right? Tell me about 'em.
- Two angels, sir.
- Yeah? And an idiot stepson.
- (CHUCKLES) - I need to see them again.
You will.
I promise you, you will.
You got any kids, Captain? Not that I know of.
Why? You hear any different? I just hear you're a ladies' man.
See? Been paying people a lot of money to spread that rumor.
I'm glad it's paying off.
Stay here, man.
Come on.
Madani! What do you need? You tell me what you need, and I'll do it.
Just You just stay with me.
Okay? Please? Madani'll fly.
I'm not going anywhere.
(GRUNTING LOUDLY) We're good to go.
MAN: Load up! Stone-cold badass.
Get us airborne, Madani.
You're clear.
I'm staying with him.
Hey, Darzi.
Take these.
What are you doing? He's in pain, and those will help.
That's all that matters right now.
Damn it, Nora.
(PHONE RINGING) Where are you? What happened? THEA: Comms got taken out by the blast.
Darzi was injured.
We're en route to the F.
O.
B.
to get him medical attention.
Any more casualties? THEA: Negative.
And Madani just saved our asses.
Sir.
Come on in.
Renegade elements are five minutes out, and I just got word that Darzi has exited surgery at Lemonnier.
He's stable.
I'd say workhorse.
Excuse me? I wasn't sure earlier Workhorse or show horse.
But you showed me something today.
I take it that the false wall proved valuable.
- It was not insignificant.
- What'd you find? That's above your security clearance.
Course, if you want that clearance, you should consider coming to work for us at Langley.
Military intelligence has a lot of barriers.
We could free things up for you.
I believe Thea's talked to you about that.
Not so sure the CIA is for me, sir.
(CHUCKLES SOFTLY) You'll come around, Porter.
You know they're gonna debrief Darzi.
He's gonna tell them about those painkillers.
What did you expect me to do? Maybe listen to me.
I told you not to let anybody see them.
I was able to help Darzi, so I did.
I'd do it again.
Any other flight lead would bring this up to the colonel right now.
You really want to talk about all the ways that you're not just another flight lead? Oh, I may not be a lover May not be a lover I always been a fighter Always been a fighter But I'll be Good to see you, Lieutenant Porter.
Welcome back.
What do you say we get out of here? Oh, shoot.
Forgot my other girlfriend's still at my place.
- Ooh.
- Yeah.
Awkward.
Well, my other boyfriend's out of town, so I guess we're good at mine.
May not be a lover Always been a fighter But I'll be I'll be a She sure took some damage.
Could've been a lot worse, sir.
I hate to say it, but Thea did good out there.
So did Madani.
- And you.
- Look around.
You see Jimmy or Hendrix? I didn't do a damn thing.
They're still alive.
We can assume that.
- (SIGHS) - Khalid's clock ran out, but if he had followed through with what he'd promised, he would have released a video.
Wouldn't pass up that kind of propaganda opportunity.
I guess we got that going for us, then.
Means there's still hope, son.
We'll find 'em.
We flew through some of the worst weather I've ever seen.
I impersonated a dead guy.
Helped Darzi get to safety.
I did everything right.
And still the mission failed.
I understand.
Sometimes that's how it is on the battlefield.
- I'll never get used to that.
- Being a leader isn't always about the result, son.
No one ever said this would be simple.
But I'm proud of you and what you did over there.
You should be, too.
Come on and take me down Oh Oh, take me down Yeah The Devil's got his eye on me He's gonna take me down Oh, take me down Oh Oh, take me down Oh.
How much should we worry about this? I would say a nine out of ten.
But that's not why I wanted to see you.
Okay, look, before you say anything else, I know.
I defied orders out there.
But we had a hostile trying to take out a $30 million helicopter and its flight crew.
I had the shot, so I took it.
You made a good call.
The kind of call an experienced field operative would have made.
Of course, that's not the only order you disobeyed.
You were having these pilots followed.
Madani and Gallo.
That's done.
Something is up with the two of them.
Their debriefs don't add up.
It's a hunch, and it's over.
Where is that coming from? You send a lot of e-mails, Thea.
I need you focused.
We got this to worry about, and you're tossing away resources.
My ass is getting chewed out by House intel, so this ends today.
Besides I need you back in the field.
- Davis Goundry is still alive.
- Yes.
The traitor is living, and somehow he made his way out of Somalia.
That was taken two days ago in Berlin.
All our intel suggests that he's trying to make his way back to America, and not because he is homesick.
And Richard? Any word on him? Still nothing.
I'm sorry.
I want you in Berlin.
Find Goundry.
You recruited him.
You know how he thinks better than anyone.
I want you to bring him in.
- I'm on the next flight.
- Good.
And word of this new development does not leave this room.
