Wolf's Rain (2003) s01e05 Episode Script
Fallen Wolves
Doggies! I had a dream where we'd reached Paradise.
It was amazing.
Red 'n blue flowers were blooming as far as the eye could see.
And they were all Lunar Flowers! Have you ever seen a Lunar Flower? Well, no Granny was there, too, and she made all kinds of delicious food for us.
What're you talking about? You're a human's pet, even in Paradise? It wasn't like that.
We were all treated like guests, and great music was playing.
Sounds like a plain old city restaurant.
But it's true! It was amazing! It made me think, "Now this is Paradise!" It's kinda hard to describe That's about what I'd expect coming from a brain like yours.
It's not like Kiba's ever really explained what Paradise is like! What color are Lunar Flowers, anyway? What is it? The ocean.
It's faint, but I smell Lunar Flowers It's here Paradise is up ahead, I know it! You smell flowers, huh? All I smell is the stench of rancid oil.
This city's seen better days.
Do you think they're afraid of us? They probably don't see many outsiders.
So, what are we supposed to find here? Some Paradise this is.
A woman Where are you from? A city to the north.
Why are you here? We're just passing through.
What business would we have in an empty dump like this? Where are you headed? Where? Paradise! Why are they laughing? Because they don't know about Paradise.
Oh, we know all about it.
It's just a legend.
Legend? There's no such thing as Paradise.
What makes you say that? We've been there.
We've seen it.
That wasn't Paradise.
That place was Hell.
I knew it.
You'll find out for yourselves soon enough.
You'll see that Paradise isn't worth looking for.
Now, get lost.
You have a place of your own, don't you? Let's go, Kiba.
I don't want to hang around here.
You've got to be kidding I got talked down to by a bunch of down-and-out losers Aren't you pretty much the same as them? What? I'm just saying, "Tomorrow, that may be us," you know? This city scares me There are so many wolves here, so why does it seem so cold? It's like they said.
The sooner we get out of here, the better.
And go where? There has to be something here.
Look at how many wolves there are.
There has to be some clues.
Sure, I need workers here, but everyone you bring me is old.
They can still work.
Yeah, but for how long? Do you need workers or don't you? All right, all right.
We'll need them tomorrow morning.
Those youngsters remind me of you in the old days.
Eyes sparkling Afraid of nothing Zali Are you satisfied with our life here? Yeah.
Yeah, I am.
This is the life for us.
Can you say that as proudly to those boys, too? Those kids went off toward the graveyard.
I doubt anyone will see 'em.
Keep a close eye on them until they leave town.
Don't worry, they'll be gone soon.
They can't even get any food here.
How about training them to work here? I didn't ask for your opinion.
Our pack looks out for itself.
That's the rule.
Who was that? Oh, I guess it was me.
And that one was Tsume.
How do those guys live in a town where there's nothing, not even anything to eat? I can't walk another step I guess all we can do today is find someplace to sleep.
Where are you going? Hey, wait up! These are good places to sleep.
Doesn't look like there's any food.
It's kinda creepy here Hey, do you hear something weird? Damn it, stop being scared of everything.
Don't scare me like that! What the heck are you doing, gramps? Oh, I was just digging a hole for myself.
A hole for yourself? You're digging a grave? When you get to be my age, you know when your time is coming.
You might want to hurry, then.
Geez, I thought I was a goner, too Old-timer, are there any Lunar Flowers here in this city? This was all a flower bed as far as the eye could see! Long ago, they bloomed all over the island.
They were all dug up, and now there isn't so much as a single petal left.
"Long ago," huh? So tell us, what color were they? What color? Well The color of the moon.
Old man, have you ever been to Paradise? Every wolf goes in search of it.
I myself tried to find it once.
How? Look.
That's the entrance over there.
What a stench It reeks of death.
I thought it'd be nicer.
I wouldn't if I were you.
Many young wolves have set out through there.
But not one has ever reached Paradise.
And all that those who return can do is eke out a living here.
Just like we did.
You should call it a day, old-timer.
There's work to be done tomorrow.
I see Well, I've dug it deep enough.
You said you went to Paradise.
Is this the path you took? I thought I told you that there's no such place.
Zali.
Kids or no, you'll get no mercy from me if you throw my leadership of the pack into question.
Get out of town before morning! You still believe in it? In what? There's no such thing as Paradise.
They said they've been there and there was no Paradise.
Maybe that wasn't the real Paradise.
Where the hell do you get that confidence? Anyway, it's hopeless.
There's no guarantee that we'll reach it, either.
It's stupid to make the trip.
Cut it out.
Getting mad just makes you hungrier.
Or it might be nice to just hang around here and die in the gutter.
Shall we start digging holes like that old man? It's not confidence.
I'm not even sure myself.
But it's screaming inside of me.
It's just that I've always had to know.
I've kept running just to reach it.
I can't imagine living without believing in it.
You boys must be starving.
We are, we are! How kind of you to notice! Wait, Kiba! Aw, just let him go.
Thanks for the food! Go ahead and eat.
Lighten up, would ya? Just dig in! There's no telling when our next meal is gonna be.
Weren't you listening? Our little trip is over.
We don't have a destination.
It's over.
What do you think, miss? I'm Cole.
Cole, huh? You should just stay here for good.
Well, that's tempting Hey, Kiba went off by himself! Huh? Where are you going, Tsume? This isn't worth my time.
Tsume left, too! Just let him go.
This place has more going for it than I thought.
Where are you going? If this keeps up, we really are gonna split up and go our separate ways here.
Fine by me.
Well Not by me.
Boy, I'm stuffed! I thought this city was empty.
Where'd you get all this food? If you want to know, come to the station tomorrow morning.
The station? You'll give me something there? That's right.
You'll see something fascinating.
Geez, where'd those guys run off to? I'm tired.
Want to rest here? Sure.
Hey, what's the matter? You give up on going to Paradise? It's not safe for a kid to wander around by himself.
Always move with your pack.
What are you people doing here? Excuse me? I know why you weren't able to go to Paradise.
You people are dogs.
You little pipsqueak! Hige Looks like they'll give us food.
What about Kiba? I dunno.
He never came back.
What are they What the hell is going on down there?! Okay, rest the dogs! Start talking, mister! The train only makes a brief stop at this station.
It lets both the humans and us eat.
That's how we make our living.
You scratch their backs, they scratch yours? Well, in that sense, Tsume did the same thing.
I may have used them, but I was never used by them! You're welcome to your own opinion.
The old-timer's in trouble! There's a stray dog loose! I thought I told you not to interfere.
We have our own way of living here.
The life of down-and-out dogs? Clinging to this place and doing what you do, you call that a life?! What do you know about it?! You're pathetic.
You kids are still young.
