World of Dance (2017) s01e05 Episode Script

The Duels 2

1 male announcer: Last week.
The acts went head to head in the most dramatic part of the competition yet: the duels.
[cheers and applause.]
That made me want to just get up and move my little hips.
You are like a beautiful creature creating movements that are inhuman.
Fik-Shun! Eva Igo! Keone and Mari.
[indistinct shouting.]
announcer: It's round two of the duels.
It's a dance battle, baby.
announcer: And half of the acts will be going home.
Whoa.
This is what the competition's about.
You guys rose, man.
That was awesome.
Thank you.
My mind is blown right now.
announcer: Two will enter the arena.
I'm bringing in the fierce side of me.
announcer: Only one survives.
It's do or die.
I either go big, or I go home.
announcer: This [all screaming.]
Is Okay, guys, so just as a reminder, the judges will score both performances, and whoever gets the most points will move on.
Okay, Diana.
Tell me who you pick.
I pick The Posse.
all: Ohhhh! [applause.]
announcer: For the first duel of the night, small but mighty 11-year-old Diana Pombo versus the young girls with a powerful message, The Posse.
[Alessia Cara's "Scars to Your Beautiful".]
Oh she don't see her perfect She don't understand The Posse delivered an incredibly emotional performance with a big message, and it really landed.
There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark You should know you're beautiful As long as you love yourself, you're beautiful no matter what people think of you.
Beautiful sense of unity.
I really felt the emotion.
I loved it.
It's great.
Your beautiful We're stars, and we're beautiful Diana is a standout.
Oh, but there's a scream inside That we all try to hide Her technique and her athleticism, way beyond her years.
It wasn't just all the flexibility you had.
It wasn't all the strength you had.
It was the passion that you put into every move.
Ms.
JLo, you are my idol.
You inspire people, and you inspire me as well.
Oh, my God.
Don't cry.
I found myself in my melodies I shout it out like a bird set free [soft dramatic music.]
[overlapping chatter.]
This duel is going to be a real heartbreaker.
Both of these acts have something really special.
Diana executes difficult moves with such passion.
And she somehow managed to check every box on that scoring sheet.
But The Posse has a lot more girls to create visuals onstage.
The Posse are taking a risk by bringing in a prop that they've never used before.
I think it's a really smart move that you picked these ropes.
It'll take it from great to amazing.
all: Thank you.
- Yes.
- How are you feeling? A little nervous, but I'm feeling good.
You're by yourself, so that's a whole different thing.
- Yes.
- You don't have, literally, a posse around you.
Diana's starting to feel the pressure of competition.
I know from being a competitive soloist that when you're by yourself, it can feel a little lonely.
Even though it's gonna be a big challenge for us to beat Diana, people are stronger in numbers.
I'm feeling a little nervous, but I'm bringing in the fierce side of me.
I think this duel will be pretty intense.
[cheers and applause.]
First up, The Posse.
Okay, here we go.
[Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha'sbr/"In the Name of Love".]
If I told you this was only gonna hurt If I warned you That the fire's gonna burn Would you walk in? Would you let me do it first? Do it all in the name of love In the name of love Name of love Name of In the name I wanna testify You bring me back to life And it's all in the name of love The name of love The name of The name of Love [cheers and applause.]
Wow.
- I loved it.
- Yeah.
[chanting indistinctly.]
That was great.
Thinking about what you guys did with the labels on the sweatshirts and being yourselves, and this, being held in the ropes and in pulling you back and forth and struggling through life-- it's becoming what you're about.
It gives me so many feels.
[laughter.]
Thank you.
You guys's skill level at your age is so impressive to me.
There's something about a piece that means something.
- So good.
- You know what I mean? Just enough difficulty.
Very tight, very clean.
This is a very, very powerful performance.
- Thank you.
- Derek, what do you think? It was creative.
It was emotional.
And also risky.
- Yeah.
Because you can get tangled up in those ropes.
Excellent job on the difficulty of that, yeah.
Difficulty, creativity.
It had everything.
- Thank you.
- Should we lock it in? - Yeah, let's lock it.
Let's do it.
[percussive music.]
Diana, it's your turn.
Let's go.
[cheers and applause.]
Whoo! Up next, Diana Pombo.
[Katy Perry's "Rise".]
I won't just survive both: Whoa! You will see me thrive Can't write my story - What?! - Whoa.
Oh Ye of so little faith Don't doubt it, don't doubt it Victory is in my veins I know it, I know it And I will not negotiate I'll fight it, I'll fight it I will transform When When the fire's at my feet again And the vultures all start circling They're whispering Don't be surprised I will still rise [cheers and applause.]
Yes! [all cheering.]
What? Yes! This piece was technically impressive.
It was difficult.
I loved it.
Were you afraid of going up against a group? I was a little nervous.
But I chose them because I wanted a challenge.
You're a warrior princess.
Diana, you have a very special ability to connect to the song and to the music and to the audience.
That's something that's very hard to teach.
That's just something that you're born with that is within.
Thank you.
You have a seamless quality between your moves that I love.
You are just something so incredibly different and special.
- Thank you.
- Don't forget that.
The thing with this type of competition is that week after week, you have to come up with something new that surprises everybody, so this is gonna be a very, very tough decision.
We're gonna lock in our scores and see what happens, okay? [tense music.]
We are locked.
[cheers and applause.]
- The scores are locked.
Let's find out who's going through to the next round.
The Posse Diana Pombo 91.
3.
Diana, you're going through.
[MO's "Final song".]
Don't let this be our final song So hear me out before you say the night is over You guys have been so great.
It's unreal how much potential there is in this group.
So I need you guys to come back next year.
Let's hear it one more time for The Posse.
[cheers and applause.]
Diana, hopefully, you know, you can keep upping your routine and really, really creating amazing performances.
You're a very special talent.
One more time for Diana Pombo.
Don't let this be our final song Don't let this be our final song Don't let this be our final song You did it.
[techno music.]
Whoa! Whenever you get JLo to tap-dance under the table, you're doing something right.
That's the spirit of the battle: two people going, "Can I beat them? Yes, I can.
" It takes risk to move forward in this competition.
[screaming.]
announcer: In this duel, fourth place world champ B-boys Super Cr3w have chosen seventh place contemporary newcomers Royal Flux.
[dramatic musical flourish.]
Super Cr3w gave us something totally unique in their qualifier.
So here we have these B-boys putting together moves in ways that we've never seen before, completely in sync, to music that you would never expect them to be dancing to.
Those alpha kicks--you guys were perfectly in sync together.
I was like, dang.
For anybody here that doesn't know what it is to be a B-boy, they make it look so easy.
The difficulty of some of the things that you guys are doing is like, God! We are Royal Flux.
And we are a contemporary dance company based in Los Angeles.
We like to incorporate different props and accessories just to make dance a bit more exciting.
On the surface, Royal Flux couldn't seem more different.
But to be honest with you, these groups actually have a lot in common.
Maybe we should love somebody They both had tons of unexpected elements and just pure, raw athleticism.
The harnesses--great concept.
You did some of the most beautiful pictures I've seen so far.
It was innovative.
It was risky.
There was something about being on the edge of my seat.
It was exciting for me.
[cheers and applause.]
[Imagine Dragons's "Believer".]
I was broken from a young age Taking my sulking to the masses Writing my poems for the few That looked at me, took to me, shook to me Feeling me, singing from For us, it was pretty intimidating, because they are Super Cr3w.
They're named Super Cr3w for a reason.
They can do super amazing tricks.
Bigger, bigger.
We're trying to stay in the same playing field as them.
We're both very athletic teams.
They're just complete opposite sides of the spectrum.
Contemporary, and then B-boy.
Solid, dude.
This round, our dance is a little bit more exciting.
The music's a little bit more energized and a little bit more high-energy.
Royal Flux, they put in a couple new tricks.
And if they can pull that off, that will be a real wow moment.
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer Here we go.
Solid.
Do it again.
Do it again.
Pain! I let the bullets fly, oh let them rain Our energy's gonna blow them out the water.
We're bringing a special treat.
We have this whole Michael Jackson theme.
They're dancing to Michael Jackson.
It could be genius.
But if you dance to Michael Jackson, you get compared to Michael Jackson.
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer They've already created a name and a following for themselves.
We look up to them in that way.
And it's our turn to do that.
Believer, believer We battle on a daily basis.
That's what B-boying is.
Pain First to take the stage, Super Cr3w.
Let's do it! [cheers and applause.]
Let's go.
[Michael Jackson's "Workin' Day and Night".]
Ooh, my sugar You got me workin' day and night You got me workin' day and night And I'll be workin' From sun up to midnight Midnight You got me workin', workin' day and night You got me workin', workin' day and night You say that workin' Is what a man's supposed to do And I say it ain't right If I can't give sweet love to you Ah, ah Ah, ah Yeah Ah, ah [singing indistinctly.]
You got me workin', workin' day and night Yeah You got me workin', workin' day and night [cheers and applause.]
Okay, windmill on the elbow.
Hardest trick ever.
Right? Human elbows don't do that.
Bruh, that's not And then the slide-- - The slide.
There's no more sequins on this side of your jacket with that slide.
This very much feels like studio versus street.
You guys take elements of what they do and brought it to B-boyism.
Like, this is what this competition is about.
[cheers and applause.]
My mind is blown.
Seriously blown right now.
It just got more and more and more better, and something else, and different, right? She almost rolled off the stage.
Like, ahhhh! When we said that "World of Dance" was the biggest dance competition in the world, we told you we were not playing.
Yeah.
[indistinct.]
To see you guys bring a level of cleanliness to B-boy, where B-boy is generally more loose and kind of freestyle-- and the fact that you guys bring-- and refining it, you guys are elevating it to another level, which is amazing to see.
Really great.
We really owe that to Royal Flux.
We saw them rehearsing, and we saw how clean they were.
So they definitely pushed us to our limits, and as B-boys, we love to battle.
Battling is encoded in our DNA.
So anytime we see competition, we invite that challenge.
- Well, you worked for it.
- Great job.
All right, I think we should lock in our score.
[indistinct.]
Yes.
Let's lock 'em in.
[suspenseful music.]
Okay, the scores are locked.
announcer: Next up, Royal Flux.
[dramatic music.]
Go get it, go get it! announcer: Next up, Royal Flux.
Go get it, go get it! [Matt Corby's "Brother".]
Sleep now under my skin Make sure you'll try to Conjure the wind And ease my mind Somebody call out to your brother He's calling out your name Oh, oh, oh Hiding under the covers With no one else to blame Oh, oh, oh Wow.
You cower in the corner Confide in your father Let it out and say You cower in the corner Confide in your father Let it break your day Let it out and say Oh, you couldn't help out your own neighbor You couldn't tell it to his face You were [.]
up by the blame [cheers and applause.]
- Yeah! - Wow.
[cheers and applause.]
You know what I love about you guys is that you guys are true to who you are, but also, I feel like you knew your competition.
Who picked who to battle against? Super Cr3w chose us.
How do you feel about that? When we first found out, we were a little intimidated, because we knew what we were up against.
And we loved that challenge.
Fear.
Face everything and rise.
You guys rose, man.
That was awesome.
That was great.
- Thank you so much.
Thank you.
I've got to say, when I heard that you guys were up against them, I was scared for you.
- Yeah.
- That fear went away.
I know you're not supposed to ask a magician how they do their tricks.
[laughter.]
You guys lifted up, and she floated up.
It's magic.
However you did it, it was amazing.
Thank you.
I can honestly say this routine had magic, literally.
Death-defying feats and all of this-- You were flying! It was--she flew, and she floated, and it was beautiful.
And you pushed the limits of what contemporary is and what dance is.
This is what is great about this competition-- two people going, "Can I beat them? "Yes, I can.
If I want to, I can.
" That's what this is about.
It's a dance battle, baby.
[uplifting music.]
Say no more.
Let's, uh-- let's lock our scores in, shall we? [suspenseful music.]
The scores are locked.
Let's find out who's going through to the next round.
announcer: Royal Flux, 86.
3.
Super Cr3w Super Cr3w! Don't think twice Give yourself to another night Hold on tight Hope that you make it out alive Ohh We are the beautiful ones The level of innovation and creativity that you guys have, it was gonna take a super crew to beat you.
So please do not walk away from this feeling like you lost.
You did not lose anything.
Don't be ashamed Honey, one day this will fade We are the beautiful ones We are the, we are the We are the beautiful ones You guys are amazing.
Amazing.
I'm anxious to see what-- what else you guys could possibly do.
I'm really, really intrigued.
I have no idea.
And that excites the hell out of me.
So congratulations.
We will see you guys in the next round.
Congratulations.
We are the, we are the We are the beautiful ones We're standing in the circle.
I never would've imagined I'd be standing here with you guys.
We are the beautiful ones - Both, yeah, were like-- - So good.
- Again.
- That was so impressive.
- Royal Flux, so good.
- So impressive.
[techno music.]
Whoa! You guys are so little, but just like, little pieces of dynamite, all of you.
I cannot count anybody out of this competition.
announcer: In this duel, the top scorers from the junior division, The Lab, take on jazz troupe Boys of Temecula.
The Lab is one of my favorite little groups.
They're so exciting.
They just tore it up.
Going nowhere We can't be stopped now A lot of the people on this team come from families that have been split up or have had hardships.
We really rely on each other.
You got to come out here and attack like a beast.
And they did that.
- They set the bar.
Whoo! It's bad boy for life The Boys of Temecula are just charming and took us by surprise.
They were very clean, considering how many boys were onstage.
We are The Boys of Temecula.
A lot of people underestimate us just because we dance.
All of us have experience being bullied being a male dancer.
And we just love to do what we do.
You guys are great at it.
You need one brain, one mind, one body, and that's exactly what you guys have.
Thank you.
[Charli XCX's "Boom Clap".]
Boom clap, the sound of my heart This is a great matchup.
They have energy through the roof, and even though they are some of our youngest competitors, they both have a shot at this.
Come on to me, come on to me now The Lab have set themselves a really high bar, because they have these incredibly impressive tricks.
I wonder if they have a second performance that's just as strong as their first.
I feel your love Boys of Temecula have fantastic technique, which is really important in jazz-based performances.
It sounds like an army.
If one or two of the boys don't hit a turn cleanly, your eye is drawn right to it.
We added a bunch of tricks to our dance.
I get throw like ten feet in the air.
If they land it, it is super impressive.
Come on to me, come on to me now Having a boxing theme is gonna have us even more motivated to show that we are the team to beat.
Boys of Temecula should, like, step into the ring, and, pew.
Boom clap, you make me feel good Come on to me The Lab, we're ready.
Boom clap The sound of my heart, the beat goes on and on Look at the little mama in the front.
Lookit.
Make me feel good First up, The Lab.
Come on to me now [DJ Khaled's "All I Do is Win".]
Hey, yeah All I do is win win win no matter what Got that money on my mind, I can never get enough And every time I step up in the building Everybody hands go up And they stay there Say yeah, and they stay there Ludacris goin' in on the verse 'Cause I never been defeated and I won't stop now Keep your hands up, get 'em in the sky For the homies that didn't make it And the folks locked down Can't never count me out, y'all better count me in Got 20 bank accounts Accountants count me in All I do is win win win no matter what Got that money on my mind, I can never get enough And every time I step up in the building Everybody hands go up And they stay there And they say yeah And they stay there Up down, up down, up down 'Cause all I do is win win win And if you goin' in, put your hands in the air And they stay there [bell dings.]
[cheers and applause.]
All right.
Whoo! Whenever you get JLo to tap-dance under the table - Yeah.
- You're doing something right.
One of the things I love about this group is the attack.
You're like little sticks of dynamite, all of you.
Just like super-small, but boom! Like just if I had to critique one thing, it's like, okay, I see what the gimmick was, but that, to me, almost took away.
Like, you didn't need it.
It was oh, you.
- Boo, NE-YO, boo.
I'm just kidding.
We done? Okay, cool.
[laughter.]
I love a good concept.
I love a show, so I felt you all played your parts really well.
The girls were just like the hype, man.
Come on, girls.
Just super, super, like grimy and in it, and like, we got this.
You guys delivered on every single level.
And you should be very proud.
All right.
- Thank you.
[cheers and applause.]
I loved you guys's group visuals.
Things just surprised us, you know.
We thought, oh, it's gonna go this place.
No, it didn't.
Boom, there it went.
Great job, and no pun intended, but you guys didn't pull any punches.
[cheers and applause.]
- Let's lock it.
- Let's get it.
[percussive music.]
Boys of Temecula, it is your turn.
Let's go! [cheers and applause.]
All right.
Let's see your opponents.
[Walk the Moon's "Shut Up and Dance".]
We were victims of the night The chemical, physical, kryptonite Helpless to the bass And the fading light Oh, we were bound to get together Bound to get together She took my arm I don't know how it happened We took the floor and she said Oh don't you dare look back Just keep your eyes on me I said you're holding back She said shut up and dance with me Shut up and dance with me Shut up and dance with me [cheers and applause.]
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Boys of Temecula, that routine was fun.
The way you guys interpreted the music and added things to it to help the choreography and-- it was great.
That head slide you did, man, that was awesome.
That was sick.
Great job.
I'm always partial to sharply dressed, so I got to give you points for that.
Oh, there you go.
There you go.
Very clean.
Super fun.
But there was a point in the choreography that it started feeling a little chorus line.
But then the music changed and you fell out of it, and that helped you.
- Thank you.
- I love it.
I thought you guys did a great job.
I love how you use the stage.
It doesn't just become flat.
There's all kinds of formations and all kinds of things going on.
I think you guys did a really awesome job.
And you gave them a run for their money.
Thank you so much.
All right, we're gonna lock in our scores.
Let's do it.
[suspenseful music.]
The scores are locked.
It's the moment of truth.
Let's find out who's going through to the next round.
announcer: Boys of Temecula, 84.
7.
The Lab 89.
7.
The Lab, you're moving on.
[upbeat pop music.]
Boys of Temecula, oh, you guys.
You guys have been so, so great.
Hey, you, uh-uh.
Don't do that.
Don't do that.
Lift the head.
'Cause this is not a loss.
You win, or you learn.
You never lose.
If you were not incredible, you wouldn't be here in the duel.
Keep your heads high.
Do not stop doing what you're doing.
Come back next year.
All right? Fantastic.
Yes, yes.
- Thank you, guys.
- Good job, guys.
Congrats to The Lab.
You guys, ohh.
You got what it takes.
Keep pushing.
Great job, guys.
Good job.
- Thank you.
- All right.
We'll see you guys in the next round.
Just because we passed two rounds doesn't mean we can stop working hard.
We have to work even harder than we did the first round and the second round.
all: Yeah! all: Ahoo! announcer: For the last duel of the night, first place Parisian hip-hop duo Les Twins have chosen to take ninth place world tap champion Kyle Van Newkirk into the ring.
[hip-hop music.]
Les Twins really brought it with their first performance.
They connection they have really translates into this kind of indescribable style that sets them apart from all the rest of the contestants.
This was a little more emotional than I've seen you.
A girl named Jessica Hey, come on, man! [light pop music.]
Now, Kyle is a world champion.
And he showed some really impressive skills in his in his first performance.
Your sounds were amazing.
The technique was great.
Remember that there's an audience out here that maybe doesn't know tap.
You have to be a showman.
[cheers and applause.]
[Nina Simon's "Feeling Good".]
Fish in the sea You know how I feel River running free You have to be impressed with Kyle.
He's added props.
He's working with space.
Kyle wore out a brand new pair of tap shoes in one week.
He's doing everything he can to win this duel.
Whoo! Like, I'm going up against somebody who is completely polar opposite from me, Les Twins, who are internationally famous.
And you have me, from, like, Nebraska.
It's a new dawn It's a new day It's a new life I have to lead everything out on the floor.
This is a do-or-die.
I either go big or I go home.
And I'm feeling good [cheers and applause.]
announcer: First up, Kyle Van Newkirk.
[cheers and applause.]
[Jidenna's "Classic Man".]
My name calling all night I could pull the wool while I'm being polite Like darling calling all night I can be a bull while I'm being polite Like oh me, oh me oh my Yeah! I know many women want to be in my life I'm a classic man You could be mean when you look this clean I'm a classic man Calling on me like a young OG I'm a classic man Keep my gloves dirty but my hands clean Got to keep the business in the family Team is a top general, oh Got to be ready for war, war Should they get into my door, door Get 'em, we'll get 'em, I know that we'll get 'em 'Cause I lived through this [.]
before I'm a classic man Yeah baby, I'm a classic man [cheers and applause.]
- Whoo! - Yeah! - Kyle.
- Come through.
Come through with the tap! This just goes to show you you cannot count anybody out on this competition.
Hey! The sounds that were coming out of your feet were nuts! Crystal clean.
- Okay.
- Clean.
How did you feel when you got picked by Les Twins? Um, the original reaction that I had was "Oh dear God.
" [laughter.]
'Cause it's like, we have two contrasting styles.
So it's like - Right.
Apples and oranges at this point.
Exactly.
It's kind of like David versus Goliath a little bit.
You know, but we were back here like, "Let's go, Kyle, let's go!" The use of the prop-- it was so cool.
The way you used it to create other rhythms, just like little tricks, so smooth and so risky-- which, by the way, it takes risk to move forward in this competition.
There's been times when I had a choice of using a prop and opted out of it 'cause I was too nervous I was gonna drop it or mess it up.
So the fact that you did it is so awesome, man.
I commend you on it.
It's really great.
Tap has struggled in this competition from the beginning.
It's a little difficult for it to translate visually.
And you decided to take that risk.
That speaks volumes about what you are as an artist.
Your heart.
Thank you.
- We locking in? - Let's lock in.
Let's get it.
[suspenseful music.]
Kyle Van Newkirk just tore up the stage right there.
Les Twins, this is your time.
Let's go.
[screaming.]
That's the spirit of the battle.
We're gonna lock in our scores.
Kyle Van Newkirk just tore up the stage right there.
Les Twins, this is your time.
Let's go.
[suspenseful music.]
[Monique Bingham's "Deep in the Bottom (of Africa)".]
I used to feel like Everywhere I'm the same I used to feel like Everywhere I'm the same I didn't know then What I know now A race is just a game It don't get deeper - Nice.
- I used to feel like Everywhere I'm the same [screaming.]
[cheers and applause.]
[laughing.]
Wow, guys! That was pretty amazing.
That was pretty amazing.
Here's what's exciting about watching you guys.
It's the spontaneity.
You never know what's coming next.
And that, for me as a performer, is so exciting.
You just reminded me, like, Jen, next time you're onstage, don't do the same stuff over and over! And at the end, when you did the neck, that's the spirit of the battle.
It's like, I love you and I respect you, but I'm going to annihilate you.
You just showed everybody how the duel should be.
[cheers and applause.]
I will say this.
The confidence is borderline off-putting.
A little bit, just borderline.
- No.
- No, no, no, no.
Hold up, hold up, hold up.
- No.
- You didn't let me finish.
- I can't let you finish! - Let me finish.
- I won't let you finish! - Let me finish.
Like I said, when there's a million dollars on the line, you have to be absolutely confident with everything you do.
- Yeah.
[inaudible.]
- So well done.
Yeah.
Question.
I would like to know why you guys chose Kyle.
Kyle is the only-- deep down, the truth-- he's the only man dances with his heart on his feet.
He's better than everybody in this room.
I understand.
It's one thing to battle another hip-hop dancer.
Okay, we do that; we already know what that's gonna be.
It's another thing to go against somebody that you have no idea what that style is, so I applaud you for that.
All right, we're gonna lock in our scores.
[suspenseful music.]
The scores are locked.
Here we go.
Let's see who made it through to the next round.
announcer: Kyle Van Newkirk, 86.
Les Twins Les Twins, you're moving on to the next round.
[cheers and applause.]
Kyle, I hope you are so proud of yourself right now.
Ah, yes.
Especially difficult to step foot on this stage with somebody that has a name and a reputation like Les Twins.
You came out here and you represented for yourself.
And it just came down to you doing the best you.
And I honestly felt your spirit, your heart, your passion.
You should be proud of yourself.
I am proud of you.
- Thank you.
- Let's hear it one more time for Kyle Van Newkirk.
[cheers and applause.]
This won't stop me from moving forward.
Being able to progress more-- like, that-- it's definitely pushed me, as an artist, a human-- everything.
I really feel like you guys are going for the gold every time you come out on this stage.
And it's just exciting to see the journey and how much of your soul you're able to bear on the way.
Thank you so much.
