FC Bayern: Behind the Legend (2021) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

1
SOMEWHERE IN MUNICH
Are you happy?
- Yes, I am.
We'll manage.
- As I just told them,
the most important thing as of now
is that we want to be open
and honest with one another.
And always talk about everything,
no matter who has a problem.
No matter when or how.
That we're starting a new era with you.
That we focus on soccer
and push aside everything
that's happened. So it's just …
soccer.
How were those squad talks with Julian?
Where does he see Serge?
We've only just started the talks.
Of course he's happy to be here.
He will certainly …
He will also have different systems.
The way he is,
he will certainly be flexible,
and he will also demand this flexibility
from the players. And I think
as a result they'll be able to grow.
Any ideas about the coaching team,
and downward communication?
That's a very good question.
We have definitely learned
from our recent experiences,
and of course that is
one of the crucial
structural issues we've had.
Of course, the new coach
wants to bring his team,
and we'll see …
In the next meetings we will
plan and discuss everything.
Yes, go ahead.
Most importantly
the team has to be in sync
from the very first minute
of next season.
There are unpleasant conversations too.
But that comes with the job.
Okay, it's good.
You always wonder what will happen
when the head coach changes.
DANNY RÖHL - ASSISTANT COACH
As I've worked very closely with Hansi,
I'm worried about the changes.
You have to wait for the outcome of
the talks, the new coach's ideas.
How does he want to play?
Then you have to
make a decision for yourself.
Sometimes it's your own decision,
sometimes a third party decides.
And you must always expect it
to be over.
For 25 years I've been with one club.
And Germany's top club at that.
Now I have decided to leave the club.
It's not easy, but it is what it is.
He is a fantastic person,
he has a great personality,
and he knows how to
work with young people.
He is tremendously experienced
and has a great eye for talent.
Whether Hermann gives the thumbs-up
or the thumbs-down, he's right.
He has an enormous aura.
You're in awe of him,
but he's also
a little scary.
If they don't want to learn this,
I'll have to say,
"Listen, pal. You'll stay behind after
every workout to run some rounds."
I thought it would be fun to show up
for breakfast with black hair.
He saw me and said,
"What's that on your head?"
I said, "I wanted to try something new,
no more blond hair, but black."
He said, "Stop it!
You're going to run rounds
until your hair is back to normal."
His great contribution was
training some first-class players.
Be it Lahm or Thomas Müller …
Basti Schweinsteiger, Holger Badstuber,
Mats Hummels.
If I forget a few, please forgive me.
The legendary header pendulum. No one
gets past it with Hermann Gerland.
Before the Wolfsburg match
we did header pendulums.
We always joke around because my headers
aren't that strong. He was super happy
when I scored my first headed goal.
If you worked hard and performed well,
and he felt you were giving 100 percent,
he gave you your space
and exceptional support.
I used to cry when I was sad.
Today I have tears in my eyes
because I'm happy
to be part of it.
Hermann Gerland
Hermann Gerland
You are the best man
Constant luck equals skill.
So, what's constant bad luck?

SÄBENER STRASSE
They have to clean up, don't they?
- Yes.
They always have a hard time
keeping their lockers straight, right?
Growing up around here, I think Bayern
Munich must be every child's dream.
First as a player, of course.
I don't think a lot of kids
say they want to be a coach
at age three.
But a player, of course.
Whoa, look at this!
The pure expertise of German soccer.
And me.
- Yeah. Him.
Hey. You look tired.
- Yeah, well,
when I have to talk to you guys,
I get these dark circles around my eyes.
The club is going to great lengths,
but Julian is more than fair.
He's contributing to the transfer fee,
to give the club the chance to raise it.
And that's pretty generous.
It's down to some details now.
A long way to go.
But it's always like that.
Your change has caused a problem.
Now we have to rephrase other passages.
What now? - That clause you asked for
must be taken out again.
What clause?
- That new clause you had them add.
It's on speaker.
Sorry, please give us a moment.
We have to rephrase that clause
in a way that suits both parties.
Fine. Meet in the middle, it's done.
I need to practice my signature,
it's been so long.
Shall we take a photo?
There.
Congratulations.
- Thanks. Likewise.
Hasan now has the trainer
he originally wanted.
So it's important that everything
works perfectly with Julian Nagelsmann.
Hasan's experience with Hansi at the end
was certainly an important lesson,
but for him this is a new beginning,
with Julian Nagelsmann.
I am absolutely convinced we will be
very successful with this trainer.
MAY 4, 2021
SÄBENER STRASSE - FITNESS AREA
Okay, men.
Yesterday the club's future
was clarified.
I know that Julian is a very good coach.
I texted him right away that
he'll have great fun with the team.
I am totally convinced of that,
due to your great skills and attitude.
That's why I'm convinced
this will benefit the club very much.
Any comments or questions?
Brazzo?
Nothing?
Right. Now it's important that we
once again increase our focus.
In the last three games I expect you to
give everything for what we've had here.
What's the general mood,
will we win on Saturday?
We'll definitely win, but the mood
is muted. - Really?
It's just a weird situation.
- Sure.
You're so close to becoming champions.
You'll have to kill it one more time.
And a new coach on top of that …
That's only human.
We just have to try to …
- Just get it done.
Check it off and …
- Exactly.
Yeah, we got it.
Everybody riles you. They all
want you to lose, and in the end
you have to come through
and withstand all this pressure.
To me, that actually feels nicer
than somehow being the underdog.
Of course this is a special situation.
Before our game, Dortmund plays
against Leipzig. And if Dortmund wins,
that would make us champions.
That doesn't happen every day.
Wicked!
- That was a foul. He'll bawl him out.
And it's 3-2. There it is!
Thanks to BVB,
FC Bayern are the German champions.
Congratulations!
Okay.
- We're the German champions! - Sure!
Let's go, guys.
- Men, see you tomorrow, I'm off.
We were champions in advance.
During high fives in the locker room
I thought,
"Well, now we'll have to prove that we
really deserve this."
FC BAYERN VS. BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH
MAY 8, 2021
Bayern Munich are the German champions.
And Robert Lewandowski is only one goal
away from the historic 40-goal mark.
OLYMPIC PARK - MUNICH
We had pretty much agreed.
Then I had to go to prison.
When I came back …
When I decided to step back
from the presidency in 2019,
one of my reasons was Herbert Hainer,
in whom I had found
an excellent potential successor.
He fits in wonderfully with FC Bayern.
He managed Adidas very successfully,
was on FC Bayern's
supervisory board for years.
When I became CEO at Adidas,
I basically became
the main contact person
for FC Bayern Munich.
And that business relationship
turned into friendship,
which made my love for FC Bayern Munich
grow even stronger.
It is important to me
that FC Bayern continues to stand
for cosmopolitanism, tolerance, respect
and social commitment.
Thank you. Let's get started with
today's supervisory board meeting.
For the former CEO
of a global enterprise
to be sitting in the stands,
getting excited over everything,
getting angry, screaming.
All the emotion that comes out there,
that's always fascinating.
And I think it also
makes you bond in a certain way.
AUDI DOME - MUNICH
FC BAYERN BASKETBALL
Success doesn't only mean winning.
It also means being an inspiration,
representing values, loving the game.
Take off the soccer mask,
put on the basketball mask.
In my inaugural speech I said
I want to be everyone's president
at Bayern Munich. Not only
for men's soccer. I'm also in touch
with our amateur sports,
no matter if it's amateur basketball,
chess or ninepins.
When you go to the Audi Dome
and see the players' commitment,
their motivation,
and their high technical level,
it's just amazing to watch.
Wherever we appear
in professional sports,
be it in men's soccer,
women's soccer or basketball,
we want to be among the best
in Germany and Europe.
Soccer has always been part of my life.
I used to play in Bayern Munich's
women's team myself.
Women's soccer was a long way
from where it is now.
I think I got only 350 Euros per month.
The girls now
have much better
and more professional conditions.
Women's soccer has developed enormously.
Today we have a top European team,
it's really inspiring to watch.
I hope their audiences will increase.
They really deserve to play
in front of more people.
First and foremost
I'm an FC Bayern Munich fan.
I love this club because I've been
following it since my childhood.
Let's say I wasn't privileged.
My parents didn't have time for us.
They were struggling to make ends meet.
They had a butcher's shop,
and we had to help out.
I did everything. I slaughtered pigs,
I made sausages, all sorts of things.
I balanced the cash,
which I was best at.
And therefore, I think,
from a very early age I gained
a certain understanding of business.
After tenth grade
I did an apprenticeship,
then got my high school diploma,
so I could study economics.
During my last year at university
I was often in Munich, and I saw
that the traditional taverns
had been replaced
by bars with long counters,
where people were standing.
I really loved that,
so I opened my own bar in Dingolfing.
My partner and I would
study in the mornings,
go to soccer practice
three times a week,
and on three days we'd work at the bar.
Back then we were adored as footballers
and also as these
barkeepers with long hair …
We were some kind of heroes
in Dingolfing.
Guys, look whom we've brought here.
Good to see you. How are you?
Good to see you. Been a long time.
I'm really happy that we're here.
We need a new push now, after more
than a year that we didn't get together.
We'll fly over to Kansas
in a couple of days.
The NFL. Guys, we worked on that
for a long time. Now they've finally
publicly announced it, and that's
one of the reasons why Jörg is here.
Yeah. Perfect.
Soccer is
the only global sport in existence.
That's soccer.
And the USA
is a very important market for us.
Last year, when the COVID crisis hit …
If you want to position a brand
on a market, you have to be present.
You have to understand the people
and the culture. And we went for that.
In 2014 we opened a New York office.
There are 36 million
active soccer players.
Miami's mayor told me that Miami is
replacing all the baseball fields
with soccer fields.
We need to reach people.
The most important job is
bringing the fans together
and getting closer to the fans.
Internationalization is all about
positioning the FC Bayern brand
more strongly.
And that's exactly what we did.
Two years later we set up a base
in Shanghai and built a team there.
In China we have more than
110 million followers.
In all of Asia
it's just under 400 million,
which is a little over 40 percent
of our global followers.
I want to welcome you guys
to FC Dallas. It's so great
to be here in the
National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Dan and I had the privilege of working
with US Soccer to develop this facility,
so the people who helped make soccer
what it is today in the United States
could be properly celebrated.
We met Clark Hunt.
He owns both the Kansas City Chiefs
and the FC Dallas.
FC Bayern are the best in the business.
At the Kansas City Chiefs and FC Dallas
we aspire to have the best people,
so we can help FC Bayern continue
to grow their brand in the US,
and they can help the Chiefs and the NFL
grow their brand in Europe.
We exchange know-how and ideas
about sports, and thus place our brand
on their market.
But at the same time we bring
their brand to Germany or Europe.
Which side of the shirt, the back?
- Yeah.
May 15, 2021
FREIBURG / BREISGAU
The Bayern team
wants to help Robert Lewandowski
score the legendary 40th goal today …
Lewi can become
the first Bundesliga player
to set the record of scoring 41 goals.
So far our club legend Gerd Müller
holds the record with 40 goals.
As long as I remember,
no one has even come close to that.
I have a lot of respect for Gerd Müller
and his record.
But I am a person who believes
he can do that. I can write history.
Lewandowski is gonna try to score
at least one goal today here,
to break that unbreakable record.
SC FREIBURG VS. FC BAYERN
MAY 15, 2021 - PENULTIMATE MATCHDAY
Come on! Go on!
Pass to Alaba, who crosses
to the middle. Thomas Müller.
There's Lewandowski!
That could have been it.
Lewi, score the Gerd Müller goal.
Thomas Müller's foot was stepped on.
The ref awards a penalty to Bayern.
This is Robert Lewandowski's big chance.
There's Robert Lewandowski's 40th goal!
There's a lot of time left.
Maybe he will break that record today.
And it's Robert Lewandowski with the
next opportunity! A great chance ….
Come on, Lewi!
Still not over. What a chance here.
He doesn't really want to do it!
Chance number two basically denied
by Lewandowski himself.
One more, damn it.
There's a good ball. Kimmich,
and Lewandowski with another chance.
Lewandowski equals. He had some
opportunities here to break that record.
He's got one more against Augsburg.
I wish Robert all the best because he
really is an outstanding player.
But actually, deep down I think,
40 by Gerd Müller and 40 by
Robert Lewandowski is a beautiful tie.
MAY 18, 2021 - QUARANTINE TRAINING CAMP
GRASSAU, GERMANY
He's gonna speak French.
I knew that Kingsley,
Ben and Lucas were on the list.
I was a bit nervous. I didn't know
if I was on it. I remembered
what happened when I was injured,
how hard it had been.
THREE MONTHS EARLIER
Get something to carry him off.
Right after the kick
I felt something snap in my thigh.
They did an MRI and told me right away
they'd have to operate.
At that moment I knew
the Euros were over for me.
For two or three weeks
I was totally devastated.
When I started to work out every day,
I saw that I made rapid progress.
If I give it my best,
I know I can get there.
Defenders: Lucas Digne, Léo Dubois,
Lucas Hernandez,
Presnel Kimpembe,
Benjamin Pavard,
Kurt Zouma,
N'Golo Kanté,
Corentin …
Hey, tell him to go his room.
That's typical Alexander Nübel!
Let's do some classic ones. Bring it on.
Group one!
- Poor shot.
Do Tomislav Piplica!
Piplica?
Manuel has a really dry sense of humor.
You wouldn't expect that from him.
Jens Lehmann.
- Lehmann?
No, Lehmann's style is
peeing behind the goal.
We both came in during the 2011/2012
season. Manu had a rough start too,
coming from Schalke.
NEUER, YOU'LL ALWAYS REMAIN A GUEST!
NO NEW GUY!
When we wanted to sign him,
there was this huge campaign
with "No new guy" banners.
After they'd seen him play a few times,
they realized,
"There's nothing we can do.
We have the world's best goalie."
This is dangerous, Welbeck alone
going for goal … Unbelievable!
Oh my Lord!
- Ronaldo is foiled by Neuer.
His presence too.
When you're on the field,
you look around, you see Manuel Neuer.
You think, we have Manuel Neuer.
His presence alone gives you confidence.
And he can dribble.
Neuer is miles away from his goal.
This is incredible!
Manu is a world-class player and person.
Haaland's chance to take the lead …
Nope! Manuel Neuer, great!
He stands for continuity.
He became team captain after me.
He's the face of this club.
Even if some shots get through,
you know Manu's there
to saves even the impossible ones.
And not only once.
He has made impossible saves
very, very often.
He is probably the best
soccer goalkeeper in history.
Actually he is both goalkeeper
and outfield player.
World champion,
multiple World's Best Goalkeeper,
two-time Champion's League winner,
multiple German champion and cup winner.
And yet he has remained
incredibly humble.
A pro player's private life
has to take a back seat.
When my grandpa was still alive
and celebrated his 90th birthday,
I wasn't able to visit him.
Things like that really hurt.
My whole family
has always been supportive.
It's a shame that on days like that
you can't just be there for them.
Basically, for your best friend.
It's over. Last training.
One more.
- What? - Kick in one more.
Goal!
World's best goalkeeper, my ass.
There are a few beers left,
if you want one.
Let's start by drinking to someone
who equaled Gerd Müller's record today,
Lewi, congratulations once again.
You know that a few important people
will leave us. Probably. With FC Bayern
you can never be sure. Right, Brazzo?
Right. With David, Jérôme, and Javi,
I think we've ushered in
a very successful era.
David was already here. Thomas was
part of everything too, of course.
We're family here, so the club
and all of us will miss you very much.
And I'm really grateful I got the chance
to play with you.
Roll it!
David is a real FC Bayern legend.
He represents the club,
he came from its own youth team.
Klinsmann was the first to let me
train with them. With van Gaal
I became much more
involved with the pros.
I'm still a young player, and I try to
pull out all the stops in workouts
in order to establish myself
as a professional.
I gave all I had
in every single training session
and I got a role as a sub,
and got to play more,
and finally made my first appearance.
And now van Gaal makes a substitution,
sending a young left-back into the game.
A left-back who later also played
in midfield and central defense.
Back then, that left-side attack
with Franck Ribéry,
I think that was unique.
I said, "Little brother, I'll help you.
What do you need?" He was cute.
In 2012 Jérôme and I
both started playing for FC Bayern.
We transferred at the same time.
All that was new to me,
and I felt honored to go to Munich.
But I admit it wasn't an ideal start.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL
FC BAYERN VS. CHELSEA FC - MAY 19, 2012
To play the final at home
in our own stadium …
THE CUP IS OURS
The atmosphere from the Bayern fans
is incredible.
THE CUP STAYS HOME
The players were under
incredible pressure. The entire city
was a red-and-white orgy.
The atmosphere was amazing here.
It clearly showed
FC Bayern's importance for the city.
I was happy and thought, "Today we'll
win the Champions League in Munich."
The final at home may have been the most
incredible event in my entire career.
And Thomas Müller scores!
The feeling after that goal,
when the stadium exploded …
The city exploded.
It wasn't just joy over a goal.
Everyone's eyes were popping.
It was like
all of Bavaria had goosebumps.
We played a good game.
1-0.
Not one of our best matches,
but Chelsea didn't do anything.
And then comes Drogba …
The first corner of the game
for Chelsea, with two minutes to go.
And it's in!
Didier Drogba scores.
I'd say the match went as fatally wrong
as it possibly could.
You lead 1-0 in the 89th minute.
There's extra time.
You get a penalty kick.
Arjen Robben misses.
There's a penalty shootout.
If Manuel Neuer is picked to take
a penalty, that's a really bad sign.
Established players ducked out,
simply dodging the responsibility.
We were leading 3-1.
Then no one else scored.
That was definitely
my most bitter defeat.
Right afterwards I saw the
faces of the fans, and I just hid.
It was too hard to grasp.
For two or three days I didn't eat,
that's how down I was,
how frustrated.
After that match …
I'm telling you, my life …
It felt like a nightmare.
Really bad.
About two hours later
I drove through Munich.
The streets were empty!
Worse than during COVID.
It was the last game of the season.
For a few days I didn't go to the club.
Hardly anyone felt up to it.
The facility was practically deserted.
Jupp Heynckes phoned every day, totally
motivated to get the team going again.
For two weeks it only went downhill
on the transfer market.
When we met for the first
training session of the new season,
I gathered the team around me,
and I told them, "Guys,
I'm telling you, this season
we're going to win everything."
GERMAN SOCCER LEAGUE SEASON 2012/13
It's a pass in by Phillip Lahm.
Schweinsteiger, wonderful back heel,
and Bayern Munich are up by a goal.
A defeat is always
more motivating than a win.
At FC Bayern, the only thing
you can't do is stay down.
But we had this team spirit,
and we said,
"We won't let it get us down.
We'll attack again."
During this season
the team grew together,
like a large family.
Our energy level
was even higher than before.
Physically we were so strong and fit,
and they all fought for each other.
Every one of them went to his limit,
and from that moment on
they just pushed right through
with outstanding games.
There's Müller!
By and by I recognized
the amazing spirit within this team,
and I told them,
"We can win something really big."
Javi, as a new player,
was crucial to this.
Even before the final against Borussia
Dortmund I was convinced we'd win.
But a Champions League final
is also a matter of nerves.
Welcome to Wembley, to the Champions
League final between Borussia Dortmund
and Bayern Munich, who are so desperate
to improve from last year.
Dortmund had come very close
and even overtaken them at times,
and they don't like that.
We were runners-up in the league,
for instance.
And we lost the cup
against Dortmund too.
Dortmund are taking them apart
with counterattacks.
2013 the empire struck back.
They had a fantastic team,
played great football, even that year,
especially in the Champions League.
Then you're in London,
in the venerable Wembley Stadium,
with an incredible weight
on your shoulders.
The first 20 minutes we were under
great pressure and didn't play freely.
We made a lot of small mistakes.
The Dortmund match was really tough.
After 20 minutes, it was through Javi
that we found our game,
through the one-on-ones
and his dynamic play.
The great thing was that we overcame it.
And that is only possible
with team spirit and mutual support.
Nutmegged, Robben, with the left.
There it is, 1-0 for Bayern!
So right now Bayern are on the way
to the treble.
Dante, that was clumsy!
That's a penalty.
And now Gündoğan, short run-up.
1-1!
It's all back to square one.
They all went to their limit,
or even beyond.
They have Lewandowski under control now.
Ribéry. Ribéry!
Robben!
Robben, now he scores!
It was like an explosion.
This feeling of joy
was something I had never even
experienced as a player.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2013
We had kind of played ourselves
into a frenzy, winning all those titles.
GERMAN CHAMPIONS 2013
German champions!
The three players who are leaving
have made the club what it is today,
in terms of sports.
All of them won the treble twice
while they were here.
MAY 22, 2021
LAST DAY OF GERMAN SOCCER LEAGUE
The storks were often
To be envied
Today I fly
Much further away
I mostly see you
Just from afar
Who understands
How much that sometimes hurts?
No matter what I do
That's where I'm from,
where I belong
That's where the ice melts from my soul
Just like a glacier in April
I am the apple, you're my tree
FC BAYERN VS. FC AUGSBURG
MAY 22, 2021
At least there are 250 fans here
who are cheering.
Of course, today is a day of goodbyes.
Bayern Munich have quite literally
one goal to help Robert Lewandowski
break the record.
Now, the next ball into the center,
and two fantastic saves!
Serge Gnabry scores the next goal!
They're trying to make it happen.
I think it might be an own goal.
The follow-up shot by Lewandowski …
unbelievable.
Kimmich. What a strike!
Coman!
Everyone's scoring except Robert.
Sané, Sané takes the shot!
It's Lewandowski in front of goal!
And Robert Lewandowski does it!
He did it! Lewandowski
did it.
No. 41, there it is!
He wanted to, couldn't do it,
did it anyway.
That I broke this record
in the last minute,
that's a historical event.
I know what this means,
not only for Germany
but for European soccer.
That's why I'm very proud
and grateful to my team.
I love you.
- Right back at you.
The time we had together …
Nobody can take that away from us.
Our years together
were incredible and beautiful.
Even off the football field
we had some really great times.
41 goals in one season!
These last few days
have been tough and sad.
But of course I'm content.
And I'm very happy to have played here.
This way, for me it was
a great finish
with a great team of coaches.
If Hansi had stayed with FC Bayern,
I would have liked to stay as well.
I've had a wonderful time. I've been
a Bayern fan since my childhood.
And after playing here,
I'd never have expected
to come back as a coach.
So I'm totally proud of
what we've achieved as a team.
And, of course,
it was a great honor for me.
Bayern has always been close to
his heart, so he always dreamed
of becoming FC Bayern's head coach.
I've had the privilege to work
with world-class coaches.
Hansi was the most successful of them.
Besides, he is incredibly kind.
He's a fantastic coach
and a fantastic human being.
It hurts to see him leave.
But all our achievements with Hansi
will be remembered forever.
It feels as though he's been head coach
here for 15 years,
but it was only one and a half.
And with all the titles he has won …
Well, I'm basically lost for words.
We should be grateful to him, but he
may also be grateful to FC Bayern,
because we gave him this chance.
Which he grasped admirably
with both hands,
rewarding us and our fans with all those
titles and beautiful soccer games.
It's been amazing to be part of this.
It's a great club,
which has always been close to me,
even when I was a young boy.
So I wish everyone there all the best.
Hello!
We used to walk in here saying,
"Today we'll win!"
It worked only once. But it did.
"Welcome Julian." Great guy.
- Also on a personal level.
Do you prefer a particular side?
No.
Where shall we do it?
Let's do it like this.
- Right. - Adjusting the settings …
Okay, I just have to focus for a second.
Julian Nagelsmann has big shoes to fill
as Hansi Flick's successor.
Now it will be exciting to see
what Julian will change and improve.
There's not a lot
he can do better, really,
as Hansi Flick did such a great job.
Focus …
and go!
Quick, quick, go, go!
Come on, do the steps.
Dealing with players who have
won everything is more demanding
than dealing with players who
haven't been professionals for long.
But I've found that
the boys are eager to improve
and want to live by the motto,
"Always keep going."
First of all, welcome everyone.
I'm happy that we're starting again.
I wanted to welcome the head coach
and his team.
Xaver Zembrod,
Dino Toppmöller, Benji Glück,
welcome.
I welcome you to the preparation
for the new season.
I'm very happy to be here
and to be Bayern Munich's coach.
Every one of you can use the opportunity
to bring yourself more into focus.
Give me some time
to assess you in units.
If you have questions about your play,
come and see me anytime.
You don't need to knock.
I'm always decent.
All of you hopefully
carry the Bayern gene,
which means,
"always win everything".
We have to win. But we also want to win.
Let's do it. Thank you.
I think every soccer club
expects you to try to win everything.
At Bayern, rather than trying,
it's having to win.
You have to win everything
and claim the titles.
It's a pivotal day in the history
of FC Bayern Munich.
CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has decided
to terminate his contract early,
effective July 1, 2021.
Herbert and I discussed this
a few weeks ago,
and afterwards both of us were convinced
that this is the best time to end it,
on June 30.
The season is over.
Fortunately we won the German league.
I think this is a nice conclusion,
and it's also the right time
to pass the baton on to Oliver.
See you soon. Thank you.
- I'll get in touch when I'm back.
Today is my last day.
All this time I've been
pretty relaxed and rational about it.
But this morning …
I always take the same route
from Grünwald,
and normally I float along in traffic
until I arrive in the parking garage.
But today, for the first time,
I felt a little nostalgic.
Bye.
- Thanks.
It will go on.
Even here.
Soccer doesn't stop.
We're entering a decade
that will bring a lot of changes.
We've become champions
nine times in a row.
Now we also want the tenth title.
The club has never rested, and that
has always been its great strength.
And that's inspiring.
People were always up in arms when
a great player retired or changed clubs.
But interestingly, we became
a bit more successful every time.
Success is what we strive for.
And success is our goal.
