Honest Renovations (2023) s01e06 Episode Script
Newborn Takeover
-I'm Jessica. -I'm Lizzy.
[Jessica]
including your house.
Every day, I feel like I'm
failing.
[Lizzy]
it can make such a big
difference in how you parent.
[baby laughs]
We come in and help make your
home work for you.
Oh, my God!
[woman]
You needed to be celebrated.
[baby fussing]
[Maimuna] What you doing?
What you doing, baby boy?
You wanna lay down?
Squeeze over here.
So tight over here.
-I'm Maimuna. -I'm Jamar.
And we live in Los Angeles,
California.
[Maimuna]
And I'm a pathologist.
[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
-[Maimuna]
we just thought everything was
perfect.
And then we went from two to
three people.
-[gurgling] -[Jamar laughs]
[Maimuna] Oh, you smiling?
[Maimuna] Look
we just thought babies don't
need a lot of space, right?
[Jamar]
he's pretty much spread and
infiltrated
throughout the entire house.
[Maimuna]
don't need a lot of space.
They take over your whole house.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]-[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
-[doorbell rings] -[Maimuna] You
wanna grab it?
-[Jessica] Hello. -[Jamar]
Hello!
-[Lizzy] Hi! -[Jessica] Hi.
How are you?
-Hi, I'm Jessica. -I'm good. How
are you?
[Lizzy] We were just gonna walk
in, just so you know.
[Jamar] Jamar. You could have
walked in.
Absolutely.
-[Maimuna] Hi. I'm Maimuna.
-[Jessica] Hi, Maimuna.
-[Lizzy] Hi. I'm Lizzy.
-[Maimuna] Nice to meet you.
[Lizzy] And who's this little
dude?
-[Jamar] This is Kai. -Hi.
Hello. Hello.
Are you happy?
-[Jamar] Always. -[Lizzy]
Always.
He's like-- He's straight
chilling.
-Yes! -That's nice.
Unless he's-- Unless he's
hungry.
-[Maimuna] Yeah. -[Jessica] Or
tired.
Look when I'm hungry, I get
hangry, too.
-Okay? -Me, too.
-That's what he does. -[Lizzy] I
am not mad at it.
That baby.
-Are you kidding? -The cutest
baby,
like the best baby.
[Jessica]
Feels like so long ago.
[Lizzy] So long ago but doesn't
it feel like yesterday, too.
I kind of miss
not sleeping and just like
staring at them.
Wow, wow, wow.
I'm gonna start you first in the
living room.
[Lizzy and Jessica] Okay.
[Maimuna] This is actually where
we hang out the most because
-[Jessica] Okay. -it's the most
"decorated" room.
Right.
[Jamar] The most spacious as
well.
[Maimuna] This is supposed to be
the dining room.
-[Lizzy] Okay. -[Maimuna] Per
the schematics.
-Yeah. -[Lizzy] Okay.
[Maimuna] And we tried to make
it that, but
we don't have a use for a table
this large.
So, where do you guys eat
dinner?
-In the living room. -[Jamar]
Sometimes here,
-mostly the living room.
-[Lizzy] Okay.
-But you don't want a table?
-No.
In this room, do you also work
out and do coffee?
Well, my peloton
was in the office until the baby
came.
-[both] Okay. -Then it came out
here.
-[Jamar] Had to restructure.
-[Maimuna] I haven't gotten
-on it since I got pregnant.
-[Lizzy] Okay.
-We will get on it again, okay?
-Yes.
You gotta smash it back. Smash
it back.
-Yeah, yeah, yeah. -[Jessica]
Yeah.
It's also good for the mental.
-[Lizzy] Yeah. -Right, right.
[Jessica] Just to get a little
sweat.
Smash it back, smash it back.
[Lizzy] And the coffee bar is
like the cutest thing ever.
-You guys use it daily? -Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
-Yes. -Yeah.
-Stroller parking here too?
-[Maimuna] No.
[Jamar] No, we have to do
something with that.
Okay, okay, okay.
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
Yeah, and they don't realize
how much a dining room is going
to help them in life.
-Yeah. -It's going to be epic.
-A highchair.
-[Jessica]
Table food is very different
from just bottles.
Yeah. Once the baby starts
having those solids,
you don't want food thrown on
your rug, on your couch.
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
You can't do that in the living
room.
And there's no denying that food
is gonna be thrown.
-Everywhere. -Every time.
[Jamar] This is the
nursery/office.
I can see you have the baby's
clothes there.
-[Jamar] Yeah. -[Jessica] You
have a dresser
or a changing table combo.
-What's in that closet? -My
dresses.
-Okay. -[Maimuna laughs]
[Maimuna] I spill over into this
closet.
[Jessica and Lizzy] Okay.
And is that like a Murphy bed?
[Lizzy] That's awesome.
Just in case we need to flex for
out-of-town guests.
-Right. -[Jamar] Yes.
-[Jessica] So, it's an office.
-[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
-[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
There is zero chance, zero
chance
you're gonna have a guest stay
in there.
-[Lizzy] So true. -[Jessica]
Unless that guest
is getting up all night to feed
and change that baby,
which I'm not sure if that's the
case.
That's only Grandma.
[Jessica]
[Maimuna]
[Jamar]
-[Lizzy]
-[Maimuna]
And I can't even get to my
drawers on my side table.
[Lizzy]
Really, really big bed.
[Lizzy]
[Jamar] Go ahead.
Like that's the feeling that
evokes--
[Jessica] Please don't jump on
their bed.
I mean, honestly, Liz.
Look, I'm trying to be
respectful and not put
my makeup on your white bed.
I just had to Superman on that
furniture.
I mean, it was like so big, and
like, it looked comfy.
-[Jessica]
bigger is better, and it's just
not.
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
stop thinking, people, that you
need to have
[Lizzy]
-All people. -Really?
You're talking to all the
people?
You don't always need to have
the biggest everything.
What if it's on sale? What if
it's on sale?
I don't care.
In this case, bigger isn't
better.
Hmm. Okay.
[Lizzy] What are these two
doors?
[Jamar] The primary bedroom
closet.
[Lizzy] Okay, so we have a full
closet.
[Maimuna] Yes.
An extra closet in the nursery.
[Maimuna and Jamar] Mm-hmm.
-They both belong to you. -Yeah.
So, where do your clothes
actually reside?
Yeah. Where are your clothes?
In the guest bedroom.
-[Jessica] Okay. All right.
-[Lizzy] Okay. Got it.
So, storage is definitely an
issue.
-[Maimuna] Yes. -[Jessica]
Storage is the thing.
-[Maimuna] Yes. -[Jessica and
Lizzy] Okay.
[Lizzy] What is this one?
[Jamar] This door here
is actually to the bathroom
attached to this bedroom.
[Jessica] All right, so let's
see.
Lizzy, you gotta see this.
[Lizzy] Oh
[Jessica] Wait.
Oh, my gosh.
Lizzy, you gotta see this.
[Lizzy] Okay. You gotta move.
-[Jessica] All right. -[Lizzy]
Okay. Let me see.
Oh, oh, it's tight. Okay.
Oh
All y'all need is a couple more
storage boxes, and you're good.
-Right? -[Lizzy] Yeah, you're
good.
-You don't use this bathroom?
-[Maimuna and Jamar] No.
[Jessica] You don't use the
bathroom in your bedroom?
[Maimuna and Jamar] No.
Literally, it was a broom closet
of a bathroom.
[Lizzy] Dog's food space,
storage.
-It was skinny and long
-Long.
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
Yeah.
[Lizzy] This is the other
guestroom.
-[Jamar] Yeah. -[Jessica] Right.
[Lizzy]
-[Jamar]-[Lizzy]
This is where your closet is.
-Yes. -All right.
This is my closet. And this is
my closet over here.
-[Jessica] Oh. -Oh, okay.
We got to give him like a closet
in his bedroom.
We got to give him something.
I mean, it's just so
inconvenient going
-into the guest room every time.
-Yeah. That's a bummer.
This is our other kind of
storage.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
It's really easy to get caught
up
on what a room is versus what it
could be.
And when you have an infant,
you are in constant survival
mode.
So, sometimes it's hard to sit
back,
reassess what's going on
and really figure out what you
really need.
-Okay. -Interesting, okay.
When you see us look at each
other,
that just means we make eye
contact
and our brains are just like
[vocalizing activity]
The little hamsters are going.
[Lizzy] Exactly.
That's all it is, so don't be
alarmed.
The issue in this house
really was when baby Zakai came
along.
Every room was everything
-[Lizzy] Right. -all the
time.
But when you become a parent
and you're entering another
person
to come live with you in the
house,
and who will never leave, they
will always be there
They will never leave.
then you have to start to
say,
"Okay. What spaces and what
rooms
do I need to be intentional for
these things?"
Also, so you don't lose your
damn mind.
[Lizzy] Yeah.
[Lizzy] Listen, the way he's
looking at you,
it's just so cute.
I cannot take it.
He is, like, so mesmerized by
Jess right now.
-[Jessica] Hi -[Lizzy] He
would not take
his eyes off of her.
I'm looking at his face, and
it's just like so happy.
He's like, "All my life, all 12
weeks,
I've been waiting for this
moment."
[laughter]
I just remember feeling so
exhausted.
I-- Me, too. I felt exhausted.
I remember feeling like so
tired.
[Jessica] Overwhelmed.
Even just like leaving the house
took two hours.
-Yep. -[Jessica] And then
sometimes
you forget, or my husband would
forget,
to put diapers in the diaper
bag.
And then you're at a restaurant
because you're trying to be
a normal human being that you
used to be.
And you have a baby that has no
diaper, no clothes, and--
Let's talk about you, though.
No, no. This is what I--
-This is me. -[Lizzy] Yeah.
Okay.
I'm-- I'm talking about me.
This is what happened to me
often.
-It is-- -[Lizzy] It's
difficult.
-[Jessica] It's so hard.
-[Lizzy] Yeah.
I think that, working parents,
you're challenged in different
ways
than you ever thought possible,
right?
Because you've had a career this
whole time.
You were doing your thing.
Now, enter another human being.
Now, I have to figure out her
schedule,
my schedule, how to work,
how to find time for myself,
which we're very big on.
-[Maimuna] Right. -[Lizzy]
Right.
And like that self-love.
But it's a lot. It takes a lot,
and it takes a lot out of you.
[Jessica] So, we're going to do
everything we can
[Maimuna] All right. Thank you.
Sometimes he comes in like,
"What'd you do all day?"
-What do you mean? This!
-[laughter]
-[Jessica] Yeah. -[Maimuna] All
day long.
[Jamar] He's a really good guy.
[Maimuna]
so we can just go ahead and pack
that stuff.
[Lizzy]
[Lizzy]
I mean, just had the cutest
little boy.
Now, they are figuring out life
not as just a couple anymore,
but as new parents.
Yeah. And it feels like a lot of
the spaces
-are these sort of mishmash. -I
agree.
So, we'll just reconfigure
spaces for them.
[Lizzy] Mm-hmm.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
The baby gets his room, his
whole room.
-Right. -[Jessica] And then she
gets
uninterrupted work time.
That she can have while baby is
napping.
-[Jessica] Yeah. -Could we also
move
the Murphy bed to the home
office?
[Jessica] Probably.
[Lizzy] Anyone who comes over,
the baby's still going to need
to nap.
And also, like most of the time,
-the Murphy bed's gonna be up.
-Exactly.
And, so, it just looks like
shelving.
[Jessica]
She needs a proper walk-in
closet.
Agreed.
They should each have a closet.
His doesn't need to be as big as
hers.
-No. But if we-- -Give her
-like a legit closet. -[Lizzy]
But if we could bring
his clothes out of the home
office
Yeah, of course.
Because, can you imagine
getting up in the morning,
right?
[Jessica] And having to go to
the next room.
And you have to go across the
bathroom and
Remember when Mark Alba was
doing that?
My dad. That's my dad.
Honestly, it just makes it
daunting.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
I mean, this is just unused
space.
You can
Yes, I think we should push
back, too.
[Jessica]
I think we should talk to Tinku
and see if we can actually go
into the laundry room
-Like how far we can go. -How
far we can go?
It should be like a real suite.
They're going to be so excited.
[Lizzy] Let's check out the
bathroom.
[TJ] Let's do it.
[Lizzy] This is the main
bedroom.
This is the main bathroom.
What we really want to do, it
just, honestly,
it just doesn't make sense
for this to have this big of a
beautiful room.
So much space. We're going to
kind of create
just a really serene moment for
them here.
And then you come into this,
like, tiny bathroom.
-[TJ] Yeah. -A half a shower,
a once-- Look at the sink.
-Look at the sink. -It's small.
The sink is like-- I mean, I
can't even
You know, it's just super small.
What we really wanna do is just
try to make this
a bigger space and kind of just
create
a matching luxurious serene
bathroom.
But what are our options here?
We could check if it's load
bearing.
We could still support it.
-Okay. -[TJ] And we can move it
out.
I say we just take this down,
push it, give it a little more
space.
So, what I'll do is we can move
the washer and dryer
that's over there, stack that
somewhere else.
Okay. Yeah, that would be great
for them.
Okay, good.
So, first thing, we'll just demo
it.
Demo day is always super fun
because it allows you to get all
your frustrations out.
-[tool thumps] -[Lizzy groans]
There you go. Push this that
way.
[Lizzy] Oh, I got it.
-[Lizzy gasps] -You got it.
-[Lizzy] Wow. -Now you know
what's up.
[whirring]
[TJ] Nice.
TJ handed me that big old power
tool,
which I believe is called a
chipping something.
I'm not gonna lie, it was a lot
of fun.
-We need to pop this off. -Okay.
[TJ] Pull it-- Once you get in
there, pull it that way.
That way.
-Ooh. I would love to know.
-That's a difficult one.
[TJ] There we go.
Who does take better direction?
I feel like no matter how I
answer this,
-it's not gonna go well. -I'm--
There's no--
Look, no pressure here.
No pressure. This is a safe
space.
-[Lizzy] Whoa! -[TJ] Nice.
I would say they're both pretty
terrible about taking direction.
However, if I do give them
like a parameter and be like,
"Hey, we need to do this,"
they'll stay in it.
But if I make a suggestion, when
it comes
to any kind of design, that is
out the door.
-What is that? Uh-uh. -If I
say--
That's not your-- No, we don't
come in there
and talk about you can take down
a load bearing wall.
If I said, "You know, toilet
should go there."
-They'll be like, "Nope." -Nope.
We are in their bedroom.
I think we need to get rid of
the carpet for sure.
-I think we do, too. -That would
be
very, very helpful.
-What's the process? -So, you
pull up,
off the tack, pull it up from
that corner.
[Lizzy] Oh, my gosh.
[TJ] Pull up from that corner,
there you go.
-[Lizzy] Oh, my gosh. -[TJ] Yep.
[Lizzy] Are you kidding?
-[TJ] Oh, that's nice. -[Lizzy]
Wow.
-Why would they cover this?
-[Lizzy] This is beautiful.
[Lizzy] Why would they cover
these beauties up?
Oh, my God. We found gold.
Literal gold.
-We lucked up. -[TJ] Yeah, for
sure.
We sand these down.
We'll fill this in. We'll stain
it.
-It will look gooder. -Oh, yeah.
-This is gonna be great.
-They're going to be happy.
[Lizzy] This is gonna be great.
[TJ] This is it.
-[Lizzy] Whoa. -[Jessica] Wow.
-Oh, my -[Lizzy] Wow.
Wait. Hold up.
[Lizzy] You guys have been to
work.
This was where the laundry room
was.
[Lizzy] Yes. This is laundry
room.
[Jessica] Because this is the
kitchen.
This was laundry.
And it was, like, this massive,
weird hallway.
And bathroom.
I'm sorry, this is a dog food
storage.
That was dog food.
This is laundry and dog food
storage.
[Jessica] This was the dog food
storage space.
It was dog food storage.
It was a non-used bathroom for
them.
It was a bathroom where they
stored the dog food.
They didn't care.
It wasn't even-- It was unused
space.
And, you know, the worst thing
you can have in a house
-is unused space. -Unused space.
If this here is where the wall
is
[TJ] Uh-huh.
[Jessica]
[TJ]
[Jessica]
[TJ]
I may or may not be
an amateur interior
designer/architect.
[Lizzy] Wow, wow.
I downloaded an app and
What would be a life in the
world
without Jessica Marie Alba?
You too can be
an amateur interior
designer/architect.
That's right. You can be an
architect,
and you can be an architect, and
you can be an architect.
Amateur.
[Jessica] And then for closet,
this could really be her closet
on this side.
Have some kind of walk-in
situation.
But it'd be nice-- Say, if this
is the wall here.
He needs a closet.
Whatever you like. I've learned
that.
Just whatever you-- Whatever you
like.
This whole transformation for
their bedroom
and their bathroom is going to
be
-It's gonna be chic. -a game
changer.
-I wanna give her -[Lizzy] A
game changer.
space so she can really start
thinking about self-care.
Definitely. Because for a new
mom,
self-care is the last thing you
think about.
-[Jessica] Yeah. -But it's the
most important
with a newborn.
I want her to take that
luxurious bath.
I want her to walk into her
walk-in closet
Go ahead. Feel it, girl.
and be a queen, and be like,
"What do I feel like wearing
today?
A freakum dress, maybe?"
-Hey! -It don't even matter.
Hey!
"Who cares if I'm home all day?"
I agree.
-You know? -I know.
-Because that is called sanity.
-[Lizzy laughing]
And you need it when you have a
little baby.
[laughter]
Jess, you haven't seen the
floors.
-No. -[Lizzy] So, Tinku and I
pulled up all of the carpet that
was in here,
and this is the floor that was
underneath.
However, you're not gonna be
happy with me.
[Jessica and Lizzy] What?
[TJ] We were hoping to be able
to grind it and refinish it.
It's been done so many times, we
can't grind it anymore.
-It's down to a tiny groove.
-[Lizzy] Ohh
So, we're kind of in a hot spot.
-[Lizzy] No! -[TJ] So, yeah.
And then we noticed in a couple
spots
in the house, it's a little
soft.
So, we're having issues with
We may have to re-brace it
below, put a new subfloor.
-[Lizzy] Wow. -[TJ] So, it's
pretty bad
in the living room.
So, if you go in the corners,
you'll definitely have
-[Lizzy] All the corners? -[TJ]
Yeah.
And that spot right there next
to the window, it's pretty bad.
-[Lizzy] Where? Here? -[TJ] So
right about there.
-[TJ] See it? -[Jessica and
Lizzy] Ooh!
[TJ laughs]
[Lizzy] Wow. Whoa.
-[Jessica] That's actually
-[TJ] So, we're gonna need
to open it up and see what's
going on.
[Jessica] That's actually
dangerous.
[Lizzy] That's scary.
Honestly, that was really scary
when we found that.
Scary as it gets.
Because as a baby, a baby's
crawling around.
No, no. As a human person
sitting on a couch
-and it falls down. -But also
kids.
-It's scary. -And I'm so glad
that we found it, because
if we hadn't looked even in that
area
Yeah. I mean, it just wasn't
safe the way it was.
-That bums me out. -[TJ] I know.
Me too.
-Oh, look at this. -Hi!
-Plant heaven. -Hello!
Plants are an easy and
affordable design hack
Because taking care of a newborn
is already hard enough.
So, for our pet friendly
options, we have the fittonias.
-Oh, these are cute. -So, these
are pet-friendly.
[Ava] And we have some smaller
ones also.
That one is an areca palm.
[Jessica and Lizzy] An areca
palm.
-[Lizzy] Areca palm. -Oh, it's
right there.
[Lizzy laughs]
[straining] I really like this
one.
-[Ava laughs] -[Jessica grunts]
I don't know where you're going.
[Ava laughs] Would you like for
me to take this for you?
[Jessica] Okay. How do we pot a
plant?
I will use some gloves.
[Lizzy] Of course, you will,
Princesa.
-Of course, you will, Princesa.
-No shame in my princess game.
[Ava] To start, you can squeeze
the sides to loosen it up.
[Lizzy] Okay. Okay, that's a lot
that fell off.
-[Ava laughs] -[Lizzy] Wow.
[Ava] Okay. You did great.
[Lizzy] You're not potting any
of my plants.
[Ava] We're gonna put some of
the soil
[Lizzy] Why am I racing?
Why do I feel like this is a
race?
[Ava laughs]
[Ava] And you kind of want to
leave a bit of a lip
-[Lizzy] Okay. -so that when
you water it,
the water doesn't just kind of
like overflow.
[Lizzy] Oh, okay.
Well, she's not leaving any room
on top for water.
[Ava] So, you can go ahead and
press down now,
maybe a little bit lighter.
[Lizzy] Just gentle.
This is how she treats her
children.
Just rough and tough.
[Jessica] I just feel like
Martha Stewart.
[Lizzy] Really?
[Jessica] I'm like Maria
Stewart.
[Lizzy] Wow.
[Jessica] Are you nervous?
-Am I nervous? -About this?
-Should I be? -I don't know.
-Does it need to go in more?
-[Ava] No.
I don't think that you need to,
you're pressing pretty hard.
[Jessica] I'm really into my
abilities.
[Lizzy] This can be very
soothing.
I'm impressed. You're doing a
great job.
[Lizzy] All right, I'm excited.
[Jessica] So, if you were going
to
[Lizzy] Oh, my God.
This is like the everlasting
scene!
If you were going to choose your
favorite
-My-- Me? -Oh, this is a
competition.
If it were-- If you were like my
favorite.
-Just gorgeous. -Please don't
make me choose.
-Please? -[laughter]
We all know who the winner is.
It's me.
-[Lizzy] Wow, okay. -[TJ] What
do you think?
This is a big difference.
We actually have walls up. This
is great.
Dry wall, you can see everything
now.
-Yes. -You can actually feel it.
Jamar has his huge closet now
which is great for him.
Maimuna has her walk-in closet.
This is awesome.
But you know what I'm realizing,
one of the pain points in this
room for them
was the fact that when you walk
in,
there were multiple doors.
-[TJ] Yeah. -And now we've
literally
just added two more doors.
There's two more doors, right.
I'm like, "Oh my God.
How do we design this space
where you don't walk in this
room
and just see a walls of doors?"
-I'm going to freak out. -You're
going to freak out.
[Lizzy] What are our options
here, Tinku?
We could do like a traditional
closet door
where they slide and one goes
across the other.
So, if you don't want actual
doors, you know.
[Lizzy] I don't know. I just
don't feel like that's
-elevated enough. -You can do
bifold doors also.
Yeah, I don't know, it's just
throwing me off
that there's literally three
frames
-That's a lot of doors. -Bam,
bam, bam.
[Lizzy] I mean, look, worst
case,
because I know we're running
behind on this one,
and I wanna get the family in as
soon as possible.
-Okay. -Just to kind of
-See how to make it look.
-hide it.
-Make it more seamless. -[TJ]
Yeah.
Well, you notice the floors? You
didn't mention anything?
Oh, my gosh! They look amazing.
-Yeah. -Wow.
[TJ] Pretty similar to the
original,
the joists are repaired.
We'll sand it. We're gonna stain
it.
Okay, awesome.
We had issues with the flooring
where they had to bring
everything up.
And we had to put all new
subflooring down.
-But-- -But wait, subflooring?
-Isn't it subflooring? -Yeah.
I'm just impressed that you know
that term.
Thank you. [scoffs]
Girl, I have been doing my
homework.
Wow, you are learning.
-I mean -What?
You can just call me an
architect now.
-Contractor. -Whatever.
Okay, okay.
This is great.
This is so much bigger than what
we could have ever imagined.
Yeah. And this tile you guys
picked
-came out great. -It's so
beautiful.
I love that we're doing it
vertically instead of
horizontally.
It makes it feel like it's so
much bigger of a space
-than what it really is. -Yeah.
This wasn't that big, and I'm a
little surprised
that we actually fit the tub.
You have the shower, individual
vanities.
Are you kidding? We have an
entire wet area
in this bathroom, which is
amazing,
We can do the fixed piece of
glass here.
-[Lizzy] Mm-hmm. -And then
instead
of leaving this open, we'll have
the door here.
Right. The beauty in that is,
is that when she's in this space
and she has baby alone,
she can have him in the bathroom
with her,
and she can still see
-through those doors. -Right.
And when she's taking a shower
or whatever.
So, what's this? What's
happening?
We just have to tile.
I don't know how long you're
willing to
We're on a time clock. Let's do
it. Come on.
[TJ] Nice.
-Not bad. Okay. -[Lizzy] Ooh.
Ooh. Okay.
[Lizzy] Okay, hold on.
Here we go.
-Like that? -[TJ] Yeah.
-Little bit more on the bottom.
-Okay.
-I need more. -[TJ] Yeah.
You tiled? What?
You know what? This is what I'm
talking about.
Well, how does she think these
things get done, okay?
I think I obviously have
gotten
-I think you got the hang of it.
-the hang of this.
I can't I just can't. Ah! I
can't.
Look at that. I'm a pro.
This is when your friends don't
really see you.
-You know what I mean? -I see
you.
Your friends don't really see
you.
Do you see me?
-I've just never seen you tile.
-Do you see me?
I've never seen you tile before.
-Anyway, I'm an excellent tiler.
-Really?
[laughs]
Who does it with a full manicure
like a fool?
-[TJ] Nobody. -[Lizzy] Not one
person.
[Lizzy] Hi, Amy.
[Amy on phone]
We are so excited about the
Uzzel family.
And we're not closet experts,
so we're really happy you're
here.
One of our design goals was to
solve the closet chaos
We did it by giving Jamar his
own closet in the primary
But as a new mom, it has to be
as functional and on point as
possible.
She has to be able to move
through that closet
quickly and as efficiently as
possible
in the mornings when she's out
that door.
So, we asked Amy,
to come in and give us some
help.
Okay. So, show us some ideas.
What's happening? Are you in the
closet now?
I'm in the closet now.
[Jessica]
[Amy]
[Lizzy]
-[Lizzy]
Cute.
[both] I love that.
-[Lizzy] Yeah.
Yay. Thanks, Amy.
-This is exciting. -Yes.
-Okay. Bye! -We can't wait. Bye.
[Jessica] Tinku, you're here.
Where's Lizzy?
Lizzy. Earth to Lizzy.
-[Lizzy] Hey, Tinku. -Hey.
-[Lizzy] Hi! -[TJ] I hope you
don't mind
that I came down here. I have--
-[Lizzy] No, of course. -I had
some questions.
-[Lizzy] Okay. -You're not
the easiest to get a hold of.
This is the best. You got us
now.
Yeah. So, now that I know where
you work.
What are we doing?
We have a couple last minute
things.
-Like what? -Wallpaper.
-Okay. -We need that for her
closet.
We talked to Amy about it a
little bit, too.
-[Jessica gasps] -We really want
like the idea
-[Jessica] Feel it! -of this
to be very glam.
-[Jessica] Feel it. -[TJ] I
think
-she found one she likes.
-[Lizzy] This is nice.
Oh, no. But look, that's pretty
cool.
-[Jessica] It's a hug. -Oh, like
the indenta--
-I love that. -Like she's gonna
be like
-It's texture. -"This is my
closet."
[Lizzy] Oh, that's really nice.
That one's the best one.
-[Lizzy] This is great.
-[Jessica] Wait a minute.
[Jessica] Oh, she chic.
-[Lizzy] That's cute.
-Chic-a-rama.
[Jessica] It feels like suede.
-[Lizzy] This one's very shiny.
-[Jessica] Mm-hmm.
It is shiny.
This one is more beautiful.
-"This one's more beautiful."
-If I was a cat,
I would be like Don't you
know how cats do that thing?
[Lizzy] We're done here.
[Lizzy] So, paint colors.
So, a lot of people make a
mistake
and they choose a white for
their house.
-[Lizzy] Do they? -[Jessica]
That's too
-[Lizzy] Stark white.
-yellow, and it's stark.
-You're right. -So, are we
looking
for something more along the
color of your sweater?
-Yeah. -Okay, great.
-[Jessica] Just creamy. -So, I
think
if we choose one of these
colors,
I think it should be, like you
said,
in like the living room, dining
room area.
More of the common spaces
where they would entertain or
have people over.
-[Lizzy] Yes? -[Jessica] Which
do you like?
[TJ] Which one looks most like
her sweater?
[Lizzy] Let's see. Shoelace is
nice.
-Swiss coffee is nice. -Swiss
coffee.
[Jessica] Maybe shoelace.
[Lizzy] All right, cool.
Shoelace.
-[TJ] All right. -[Lizzy] Great.
Perfect.
You should write it down.
-Just so you don't forget. -[TJ]
You got it.
[Jessica] And then, maybe for
the baby,
you can do a two-tone with the
trim and the walls.
[Lizzy] I like 'skinny jeans' a
lot.
-[Jessica] Okay. -So
[Jessica] That is cool.
-[Lizzy] Dynasty. -[Jessica]
Mm-hmm.
All right, cool.
All right, so skinny jeans and
Dynasty marquee. Yeah!
I think that's it, actually.
That was quick.
-Nice. -Now you know where to
come
-to get answers. -Yeah. When
you're busy,
I can actually get this done
really quickly.
Now we have to work on my
parents' house.
[TJ] That's That's going to
take a whole lot of time.
-[Jessica] Oh, God. -[Lizzy]
Seriously.
[Lizzy] This is our favorite
time.
Do you have little nerves in the
pit of your stomach?
You know, I just hope that they
like what we did.
-It was a situation
-Situation.
-and we hope -True.
that they are going to be
happy.
-Let's do this. -[Lizzy] Okay.
[Lizzy] First, home.
Cleaning is always super
important.
They have these eco-cleaning
refills.
[Lizzy] Yes. -Let's get them the
whole kit.
Laundry detergent. They have a
little one,
so stains are going to be
important.
[Jessica] And let's get stuff
for mom.
Because she's a new mom, and she
needs to be pampered.
-[Lizzy] Yes. Unscented.
-[Jessica] Soaking salts.
The body cream is nice for
everyone.
Oh, my gosh. I love this body
cream.
-[Lizzy] I definitely say oil.
-Maybe the oil. Yeah.
-And lotion. -[Lizzy] Lotion.
[Lizzy] One thousand percent.
[Jessica] Yeah. Let's grab stuff
for baby.
Maybe we just take this,
because this is like a
night-time kit.
-[Lizzy] Oh, great. -Yeah.
[Lizzy] Okay. Okay.
How are you going to carry all
this?
Well, you know, and then maybe
this.
[Lizzy] So cute. Yes.
Towels, towels, bath towels.
All right.
-I'm not really sure -I want
to see you do it.
-[strains] Ooh. -[Lizzy] There
you go.
It's almost like you have three
kids.
-Interesting. -[Jessica groans]
-I think this is great. -
AndTV magic.
[Lizzy laughs]
[music continues]
[Lizzy] Yay!
This looks insane.
-This is incredible. -Today is
the day!
[Lizzy] Okay. We still have a
little bit more
to do before they get here.
-[Jessica] This is heavy. -Okay.
-You need any help? -[Jessica]
Yes.
[Lizzy] Don't drop it.
[Jessica exclaims]
[Lizzy] Okay. Turn.
Oh, my gosh, this nursery!
[Lizzy] Oh, my goodness.
This blue though, and this
darker
[Jessica] I'm so happy we did
the tone.
You instantly elevate a space
-I know. -when you use
-these, like, tonal colors
-Yeah. Yeah.
that complement each other.
[Jessica] I'm gonna put this in
here.
Towel, such a cute little
moment.
[Lizzy] It's such a great hack
to bring in
fresh green plants into any
space in the house.
[Jessica] I mean, I went a
little overkill
because I love babies, and I'm
not having anymore. Heh.
[Lizzy] Awesome sauce.
Oh, I love a good gallery wall.
[Jessica] Me, too.
What's wrong with me?
[Lizzy] I don't know. You should
get with it, though.
[Jessica] Oh, there we go. That
one's not
[Lizzy] Jess, what do you want
me to do?
[Jessica] I want you to hang it
on the teeth.
-What do you want me to do? -So,
it doesn't fall down.
[Lizzy] Oh, this is on the
teeth, yeah.
[Jessica] There you-- No.
[Lizzy] What do you want me to
do?
I don't know what you want me to
do.
Okay, I'm doing my best.
[Jessica] And what is the tip,
Lizzy?
[Lizzy] Just make it pretty.
-[Jessica] No. -Damn it.
[Jessica] You don't have
children
You don't have kids. That's the
tip?
[Jessica] No. You don't have
children's photos
-in your bedroom. -[Lizzy] Oh.
-[Jessica] Because -[Lizzy]
Why?
[Jessica] It's better just to
have the couple photos
because it helps with intimacy.
-The room is all about you.
-Mm-hmm.
Now, I know you got some of
Hayes' stuff
in your bedroom next to your
bed,
so why are you lying to these
people?
-I've seen it. -[Jessica] No, I
just have--
-I've seen it. I've seen it. -I
just have the paintings.
-Mmm. I've seen it. -I don't
have any photos of him.
-He's not staring at me. -[Lizzy
mockingly vocalizing]
I have some paintings he made
me.
-[Lizzy] Mm-hmm. -It looks
really nice.
[Lizzy] Okay. It's beautiful,
but they're about to be here any
second.
-Okay. Let's go. Let's go.
-[Lizzy] Let's go.
[Lizzy] Are you guys excited?
-[Jamar] Yeah. -[Maimuna] Stupid
excited.
[Lizzy] We are stupid excited
for you.
Yes.
[Maimuna]
When we were driving here,
I asked Jamar what was he most
excited about,
today, our wedding day,
or when we went on our
honeymoon.
And we both agreed today.
-Like we're just ahh! -Yeah.
All right, this is what I will
tell you.
This is for you.
This is the space you will live
in,
that you will make memories in.
This is for you both and Zakai.
This is your space. You ready?
-Yes. -[Lizzy] All right.
All right, let's go. Let's go!
My heart just stopped beating
really.
[Jessica and Lizzy] Welcome
home!
-[Maimuna screams] -[Jamar] Oh,
my goodness!
[Maimuna] Oh, my gosh!
-[Lizzy] You ready? -[Maimuna]
Yes! Let's go!
My heart just stopped beating
really.
[Jessica and Lizzy] Welcome
home!
-[Maimuna] Oh, my gosh. -[Jamar]
Oh, wait!
[Maimuna] Look at these floors.
[Maimuna]
This is beautiful.
[Jamar]
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
-But this is your stuff.
-[Lizzy] This is your stuff.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]-[Jessica]
[Maimuna]
We have a table that actually
fits in this space!
[Maimuna]
functional.
-And it flows, too. -And it
flows.
[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
-[Maimuna]
Look at these floors!
[Lizzy]
when we walked in this space
and met you for the first time,
Maimuna looked us dead in our
eyes,
and she said, "I do not want a
dining area."
We don't have a use for a table
this large.
-You don't want a table? -No.
-I did say that. -[laughter]
[Lizzy] We looked at each other
afterwards and said,
"Who is she trying to trick up
in here?"
Because obviously, she never had
a baby eating solids before.
-[laughter] -[Lizzy] On her
couch!
-We were like -[Jessica] Are
you kidding?
[Maimuna]
[Jamar] That's nice. Heh.
[Maimuna] My goodness, this is
beautiful.
-It's tea, it's coffee. -[Jamar]
Yeah, this is nice.
-It's a whole thing. -[Maimuna]
Oh, my gosh.
-It's a whole moment. -[Jessica]
Mm-hmm.
[Jessica] When you get your
five/ten minutes,
which is few and far between
-Let me tell you. -we want
you to indulge.
-Right. -And this forces you
-[Maimuna] Right. -to take a
moment
to just stop,
let it take its time and just
sit in the moment.
[Lizzy] And we'd love for you to
look in here.
[Jessica] This is a mom hack.
You don't want to go in the
nursery
every time you change the baby.
-So, you always have this.
-[Jamar] Okay.
You put it out, you change his
butt, you put it away.
It's always here.
You don't have to go all the way
back
-into his room. -Sometimes you
just don't
-feel like it, right? -[Maimuna]
Right. Right.
-[Lizzy] Great to have all over.
-That's so smart.
[Jamar] All right, let's try
this one.
[Maimuna] What?
I don't know where you're
playing video games now,
-but this is this one's mine!
-[Jamar] Oh, no!
[laughter]
[Jessica] Maimuna, this is your
queendom.
Yes!
[Jessica] This is where you are
gonna work from home.
you have this amazing Murphy bed
[Lizzy] The best part
is you don't have to remove the
picture.
-[Jessica]
We really just used
a lot of things you already have
in the house.
-[Maimuna] Yeah? -[Lizzy] This
is your desk.
-[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
This is your Murphy bed.
We literally just made a couple
improvements.
Obviously, the paint color is
one of
-our favorite colors ever.
-[Maimuna] I love this, yeah.
And it feels very like chic,
elevated but feminine.
This is amazing.
-Let's go in here. -[Maimuna]
Let's go in.
[Jamar] Ooh
[both joyfully laugh]
[Jamar] I can't see.
You haven't even opened the
door.
Oh, wow.
-Zakai has his own little room.
-Holy crap!
[laughter]
[Jamar] There's no office
anymore.
Oh, he has a nursery.
Looks so much better than what I
did.
[joyful laughter]
[Jessica] Do you like it?
Oh, this is beautiful.
[Jessica] Before, the space was
trying to do a lot.
-Yes. -It was a spare bedroom.
-It was an office. -[Lizzy]
Office.
[Jessica] It was his room.
We really wanted to make this
room all about Zakai.
[Jessica]
it would be just like a
beautiful space
-for you guys -Yes.
to spend time with baby boy.
Like a sacred space for him and
for you.
And it's common.
[Jessica] And you can do tummy
time.
You can play. You can read
books.
[Maimuna] Oh, this is beautiful.
[Lizzy]
[excited laughter]
Yo, this is-- This is-- Oh, look
at the pictures.
[Jamar]
Look how much room you have to
walk--
Oh, what's that door back there?
[Maimuna]
It looks so much more spacious
and less cluttered in here, my
goodness.
[Jessica] And this is an
appropriately-sized bed frame
-[Jamar] It is. It is. -for
the room.
Oh, and your lights, right here,
are all hooked up to a Roku set
that you can have an app
downloaded on your phone,
and you can control your lights
and other features.
There's a camera in the baby
room.
-You can see the baby anytime.
-[Jamar] That's nice.
That's amazing.
[Jamar]
Oh! It's a It's a walk-in
closet.
-Oh! Look at this closet!
-[Jamar] Look at the space!
-Oh, my goodness. -[Maimuna
exclaims]
[Maimuna]
I don't see any clothes up here
for you.
So, I mean, I think this is just
mine.
It's also pink though, too.
Oh, look at the chandelier.
[Maimuna]
-[Lizzy] Jamar. -[Jessica] All
right, Jamar.
[Lizzy] Jamar, it's your turn.
Do you notice two new doors in
your bedroom?
[Jamar] I do see two new doors
here.
Oh, my goodness!
[Maimuna]
[Jamar]
I may stick a couple of dresses
over there.
[Jamar] No, you can't. There's
plenty of space in there.
Oh, no, we gave you a whole
other closet in here!
[Jessica] And you also have your
whole office.
[Maimuna] That's true. Okay.
[Lizzy]
Do you remember what it looked
like?
[Jamar] Kick the door in. Let's
go.
[Jamar laughs]
[screams] Look at this!
-[Jamar] She is in the tub!
-[Maimuna] Oh, my goodness.
[Maimuna] Are you kidding me?
[Jamar] This is crazy.
[Maimuna] Are you kidding me?
-Are you kidding me? -[Jamar]
This is crazy.
[Jamar laughs]
[Maimuna] My whole world is
blown right now.
[Maimuna laughs]
[Maimuna]
Remember that giant hallway
-[Jessica]-[Maimuna]
[Jessica][Maimuna]
[Jessica]
-[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
[Jamar]
We both know what it's like to
have a new baby.
We needed to create a space for
you guys
to be able to come in and chill.
Take the load off of the world
and know that you are in your
intimate sanctuary space.
You guys knocked it out of the
park.
-[Jessica] Yay! -Honestly, it
was so exciting.
In this house, every room served
every purpose.
-[Jamar] Right. -You guys are
really busy.
You're sleep deprived. You're
time starved.
And so, we wanted to relieve
some of that pressure for you.
So, when you come home, you can
just you can chill.
And this home can feel like this
is your vacation
-from the rest of the world.
-[Maimuna and Jamar] Yes.
-[Maimuna] Absolutely. -I'm
gonna cry now.
I'm gonna cry. I'm gonna cry.
I'm just so happy for y'all.
-I really am. -[Maimuna] Aw
I'm just really happy for y'all.
You deserve it.
And we're just so happy
that we could be a part of this
moment.
Walking into the house and
seeing all of the changes,
[Maimuna]
My office is amazing.
They did a fantastic job.
I absolutely love it.
[Jessica] Thank you for letting
us
take over for three months.
-[Jessica] All right -[Lizzy]
Bye.
-[Jessica] Bye. -Thank you. We
love you.
Thank you, guys.
[Jessica]
including your house.
Every day, I feel like I'm
failing.
[Lizzy]
it can make such a big
difference in how you parent.
[baby laughs]
We come in and help make your
home work for you.
Oh, my God!
[woman]
You needed to be celebrated.
[baby fussing]
[Maimuna] What you doing?
What you doing, baby boy?
You wanna lay down?
Squeeze over here.
So tight over here.
-I'm Maimuna. -I'm Jamar.
And we live in Los Angeles,
California.
[Maimuna]
And I'm a pathologist.
[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
-[Maimuna]
we just thought everything was
perfect.
And then we went from two to
three people.
-[gurgling] -[Jamar laughs]
[Maimuna] Oh, you smiling?
[Maimuna] Look
we just thought babies don't
need a lot of space, right?
[Jamar]
he's pretty much spread and
infiltrated
throughout the entire house.
[Maimuna]
don't need a lot of space.
They take over your whole house.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]-[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
-[doorbell rings] -[Maimuna] You
wanna grab it?
-[Jessica] Hello. -[Jamar]
Hello!
-[Lizzy] Hi! -[Jessica] Hi.
How are you?
-Hi, I'm Jessica. -I'm good. How
are you?
[Lizzy] We were just gonna walk
in, just so you know.
[Jamar] Jamar. You could have
walked in.
Absolutely.
-[Maimuna] Hi. I'm Maimuna.
-[Jessica] Hi, Maimuna.
-[Lizzy] Hi. I'm Lizzy.
-[Maimuna] Nice to meet you.
[Lizzy] And who's this little
dude?
-[Jamar] This is Kai. -Hi.
Hello. Hello.
Are you happy?
-[Jamar] Always. -[Lizzy]
Always.
He's like-- He's straight
chilling.
-Yes! -That's nice.
Unless he's-- Unless he's
hungry.
-[Maimuna] Yeah. -[Jessica] Or
tired.
Look when I'm hungry, I get
hangry, too.
-Okay? -Me, too.
-That's what he does. -[Lizzy] I
am not mad at it.
That baby.
-Are you kidding? -The cutest
baby,
like the best baby.
[Jessica]
Feels like so long ago.
[Lizzy] So long ago but doesn't
it feel like yesterday, too.
I kind of miss
not sleeping and just like
staring at them.
Wow, wow, wow.
I'm gonna start you first in the
living room.
[Lizzy and Jessica] Okay.
[Maimuna] This is actually where
we hang out the most because
-[Jessica] Okay. -it's the most
"decorated" room.
Right.
[Jamar] The most spacious as
well.
[Maimuna] This is supposed to be
the dining room.
-[Lizzy] Okay. -[Maimuna] Per
the schematics.
-Yeah. -[Lizzy] Okay.
[Maimuna] And we tried to make
it that, but
we don't have a use for a table
this large.
So, where do you guys eat
dinner?
-In the living room. -[Jamar]
Sometimes here,
-mostly the living room.
-[Lizzy] Okay.
-But you don't want a table?
-No.
In this room, do you also work
out and do coffee?
Well, my peloton
was in the office until the baby
came.
-[both] Okay. -Then it came out
here.
-[Jamar] Had to restructure.
-[Maimuna] I haven't gotten
-on it since I got pregnant.
-[Lizzy] Okay.
-We will get on it again, okay?
-Yes.
You gotta smash it back. Smash
it back.
-Yeah, yeah, yeah. -[Jessica]
Yeah.
It's also good for the mental.
-[Lizzy] Yeah. -Right, right.
[Jessica] Just to get a little
sweat.
Smash it back, smash it back.
[Lizzy] And the coffee bar is
like the cutest thing ever.
-You guys use it daily? -Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
-Yes. -Yeah.
-Stroller parking here too?
-[Maimuna] No.
[Jamar] No, we have to do
something with that.
Okay, okay, okay.
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
Yeah, and they don't realize
how much a dining room is going
to help them in life.
-Yeah. -It's going to be epic.
-A highchair.
-[Jessica]
Table food is very different
from just bottles.
Yeah. Once the baby starts
having those solids,
you don't want food thrown on
your rug, on your couch.
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
You can't do that in the living
room.
And there's no denying that food
is gonna be thrown.
-Everywhere. -Every time.
[Jamar] This is the
nursery/office.
I can see you have the baby's
clothes there.
-[Jamar] Yeah. -[Jessica] You
have a dresser
or a changing table combo.
-What's in that closet? -My
dresses.
-Okay. -[Maimuna laughs]
[Maimuna] I spill over into this
closet.
[Jessica and Lizzy] Okay.
And is that like a Murphy bed?
[Lizzy] That's awesome.
Just in case we need to flex for
out-of-town guests.
-Right. -[Jamar] Yes.
-[Jessica] So, it's an office.
-[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
-[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
There is zero chance, zero
chance
you're gonna have a guest stay
in there.
-[Lizzy] So true. -[Jessica]
Unless that guest
is getting up all night to feed
and change that baby,
which I'm not sure if that's the
case.
That's only Grandma.
[Jessica]
[Maimuna]
[Jamar]
-[Lizzy]
-[Maimuna]
And I can't even get to my
drawers on my side table.
[Lizzy]
Really, really big bed.
[Lizzy]
[Jamar] Go ahead.
Like that's the feeling that
evokes--
[Jessica] Please don't jump on
their bed.
I mean, honestly, Liz.
Look, I'm trying to be
respectful and not put
my makeup on your white bed.
I just had to Superman on that
furniture.
I mean, it was like so big, and
like, it looked comfy.
-[Jessica]
bigger is better, and it's just
not.
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
stop thinking, people, that you
need to have
[Lizzy]
-All people. -Really?
You're talking to all the
people?
You don't always need to have
the biggest everything.
What if it's on sale? What if
it's on sale?
I don't care.
In this case, bigger isn't
better.
Hmm. Okay.
[Lizzy] What are these two
doors?
[Jamar] The primary bedroom
closet.
[Lizzy] Okay, so we have a full
closet.
[Maimuna] Yes.
An extra closet in the nursery.
[Maimuna and Jamar] Mm-hmm.
-They both belong to you. -Yeah.
So, where do your clothes
actually reside?
Yeah. Where are your clothes?
In the guest bedroom.
-[Jessica] Okay. All right.
-[Lizzy] Okay. Got it.
So, storage is definitely an
issue.
-[Maimuna] Yes. -[Jessica]
Storage is the thing.
-[Maimuna] Yes. -[Jessica and
Lizzy] Okay.
[Lizzy] What is this one?
[Jamar] This door here
is actually to the bathroom
attached to this bedroom.
[Jessica] All right, so let's
see.
Lizzy, you gotta see this.
[Lizzy] Oh
[Jessica] Wait.
Oh, my gosh.
Lizzy, you gotta see this.
[Lizzy] Okay. You gotta move.
-[Jessica] All right. -[Lizzy]
Okay. Let me see.
Oh, oh, it's tight. Okay.
Oh
All y'all need is a couple more
storage boxes, and you're good.
-Right? -[Lizzy] Yeah, you're
good.
-You don't use this bathroom?
-[Maimuna and Jamar] No.
[Jessica] You don't use the
bathroom in your bedroom?
[Maimuna and Jamar] No.
Literally, it was a broom closet
of a bathroom.
[Lizzy] Dog's food space,
storage.
-It was skinny and long
-Long.
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
Yeah.
[Lizzy] This is the other
guestroom.
-[Jamar] Yeah. -[Jessica] Right.
[Lizzy]
-[Jamar]-[Lizzy]
This is where your closet is.
-Yes. -All right.
This is my closet. And this is
my closet over here.
-[Jessica] Oh. -Oh, okay.
We got to give him like a closet
in his bedroom.
We got to give him something.
I mean, it's just so
inconvenient going
-into the guest room every time.
-Yeah. That's a bummer.
This is our other kind of
storage.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
It's really easy to get caught
up
on what a room is versus what it
could be.
And when you have an infant,
you are in constant survival
mode.
So, sometimes it's hard to sit
back,
reassess what's going on
and really figure out what you
really need.
-Okay. -Interesting, okay.
When you see us look at each
other,
that just means we make eye
contact
and our brains are just like
[vocalizing activity]
The little hamsters are going.
[Lizzy] Exactly.
That's all it is, so don't be
alarmed.
The issue in this house
really was when baby Zakai came
along.
Every room was everything
-[Lizzy] Right. -all the
time.
But when you become a parent
and you're entering another
person
to come live with you in the
house,
and who will never leave, they
will always be there
They will never leave.
then you have to start to
say,
"Okay. What spaces and what
rooms
do I need to be intentional for
these things?"
Also, so you don't lose your
damn mind.
[Lizzy] Yeah.
[Lizzy] Listen, the way he's
looking at you,
it's just so cute.
I cannot take it.
He is, like, so mesmerized by
Jess right now.
-[Jessica] Hi -[Lizzy] He
would not take
his eyes off of her.
I'm looking at his face, and
it's just like so happy.
He's like, "All my life, all 12
weeks,
I've been waiting for this
moment."
[laughter]
I just remember feeling so
exhausted.
I-- Me, too. I felt exhausted.
I remember feeling like so
tired.
[Jessica] Overwhelmed.
Even just like leaving the house
took two hours.
-Yep. -[Jessica] And then
sometimes
you forget, or my husband would
forget,
to put diapers in the diaper
bag.
And then you're at a restaurant
because you're trying to be
a normal human being that you
used to be.
And you have a baby that has no
diaper, no clothes, and--
Let's talk about you, though.
No, no. This is what I--
-This is me. -[Lizzy] Yeah.
Okay.
I'm-- I'm talking about me.
This is what happened to me
often.
-It is-- -[Lizzy] It's
difficult.
-[Jessica] It's so hard.
-[Lizzy] Yeah.
I think that, working parents,
you're challenged in different
ways
than you ever thought possible,
right?
Because you've had a career this
whole time.
You were doing your thing.
Now, enter another human being.
Now, I have to figure out her
schedule,
my schedule, how to work,
how to find time for myself,
which we're very big on.
-[Maimuna] Right. -[Lizzy]
Right.
And like that self-love.
But it's a lot. It takes a lot,
and it takes a lot out of you.
[Jessica] So, we're going to do
everything we can
[Maimuna] All right. Thank you.
Sometimes he comes in like,
"What'd you do all day?"
-What do you mean? This!
-[laughter]
-[Jessica] Yeah. -[Maimuna] All
day long.
[Jamar] He's a really good guy.
[Maimuna]
so we can just go ahead and pack
that stuff.
[Lizzy]
[Lizzy]
I mean, just had the cutest
little boy.
Now, they are figuring out life
not as just a couple anymore,
but as new parents.
Yeah. And it feels like a lot of
the spaces
-are these sort of mishmash. -I
agree.
So, we'll just reconfigure
spaces for them.
[Lizzy] Mm-hmm.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
The baby gets his room, his
whole room.
-Right. -[Jessica] And then she
gets
uninterrupted work time.
That she can have while baby is
napping.
-[Jessica] Yeah. -Could we also
move
the Murphy bed to the home
office?
[Jessica] Probably.
[Lizzy] Anyone who comes over,
the baby's still going to need
to nap.
And also, like most of the time,
-the Murphy bed's gonna be up.
-Exactly.
And, so, it just looks like
shelving.
[Jessica]
She needs a proper walk-in
closet.
Agreed.
They should each have a closet.
His doesn't need to be as big as
hers.
-No. But if we-- -Give her
-like a legit closet. -[Lizzy]
But if we could bring
his clothes out of the home
office
Yeah, of course.
Because, can you imagine
getting up in the morning,
right?
[Jessica] And having to go to
the next room.
And you have to go across the
bathroom and
Remember when Mark Alba was
doing that?
My dad. That's my dad.
Honestly, it just makes it
daunting.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
I mean, this is just unused
space.
You can
Yes, I think we should push
back, too.
[Jessica]
I think we should talk to Tinku
and see if we can actually go
into the laundry room
-Like how far we can go. -How
far we can go?
It should be like a real suite.
They're going to be so excited.
[Lizzy] Let's check out the
bathroom.
[TJ] Let's do it.
[Lizzy] This is the main
bedroom.
This is the main bathroom.
What we really want to do, it
just, honestly,
it just doesn't make sense
for this to have this big of a
beautiful room.
So much space. We're going to
kind of create
just a really serene moment for
them here.
And then you come into this,
like, tiny bathroom.
-[TJ] Yeah. -A half a shower,
a once-- Look at the sink.
-Look at the sink. -It's small.
The sink is like-- I mean, I
can't even
You know, it's just super small.
What we really wanna do is just
try to make this
a bigger space and kind of just
create
a matching luxurious serene
bathroom.
But what are our options here?
We could check if it's load
bearing.
We could still support it.
-Okay. -[TJ] And we can move it
out.
I say we just take this down,
push it, give it a little more
space.
So, what I'll do is we can move
the washer and dryer
that's over there, stack that
somewhere else.
Okay. Yeah, that would be great
for them.
Okay, good.
So, first thing, we'll just demo
it.
Demo day is always super fun
because it allows you to get all
your frustrations out.
-[tool thumps] -[Lizzy groans]
There you go. Push this that
way.
[Lizzy] Oh, I got it.
-[Lizzy gasps] -You got it.
-[Lizzy] Wow. -Now you know
what's up.
[whirring]
[TJ] Nice.
TJ handed me that big old power
tool,
which I believe is called a
chipping something.
I'm not gonna lie, it was a lot
of fun.
-We need to pop this off. -Okay.
[TJ] Pull it-- Once you get in
there, pull it that way.
That way.
-Ooh. I would love to know.
-That's a difficult one.
[TJ] There we go.
Who does take better direction?
I feel like no matter how I
answer this,
-it's not gonna go well. -I'm--
There's no--
Look, no pressure here.
No pressure. This is a safe
space.
-[Lizzy] Whoa! -[TJ] Nice.
I would say they're both pretty
terrible about taking direction.
However, if I do give them
like a parameter and be like,
"Hey, we need to do this,"
they'll stay in it.
But if I make a suggestion, when
it comes
to any kind of design, that is
out the door.
-What is that? Uh-uh. -If I
say--
That's not your-- No, we don't
come in there
and talk about you can take down
a load bearing wall.
If I said, "You know, toilet
should go there."
-They'll be like, "Nope." -Nope.
We are in their bedroom.
I think we need to get rid of
the carpet for sure.
-I think we do, too. -That would
be
very, very helpful.
-What's the process? -So, you
pull up,
off the tack, pull it up from
that corner.
[Lizzy] Oh, my gosh.
[TJ] Pull up from that corner,
there you go.
-[Lizzy] Oh, my gosh. -[TJ] Yep.
[Lizzy] Are you kidding?
-[TJ] Oh, that's nice. -[Lizzy]
Wow.
-Why would they cover this?
-[Lizzy] This is beautiful.
[Lizzy] Why would they cover
these beauties up?
Oh, my God. We found gold.
Literal gold.
-We lucked up. -[TJ] Yeah, for
sure.
We sand these down.
We'll fill this in. We'll stain
it.
-It will look gooder. -Oh, yeah.
-This is gonna be great.
-They're going to be happy.
[Lizzy] This is gonna be great.
[TJ] This is it.
-[Lizzy] Whoa. -[Jessica] Wow.
-Oh, my -[Lizzy] Wow.
Wait. Hold up.
[Lizzy] You guys have been to
work.
This was where the laundry room
was.
[Lizzy] Yes. This is laundry
room.
[Jessica] Because this is the
kitchen.
This was laundry.
And it was, like, this massive,
weird hallway.
And bathroom.
I'm sorry, this is a dog food
storage.
That was dog food.
This is laundry and dog food
storage.
[Jessica] This was the dog food
storage space.
It was dog food storage.
It was a non-used bathroom for
them.
It was a bathroom where they
stored the dog food.
They didn't care.
It wasn't even-- It was unused
space.
And, you know, the worst thing
you can have in a house
-is unused space. -Unused space.
If this here is where the wall
is
[TJ] Uh-huh.
[Jessica]
[TJ]
[Jessica]
[TJ]
I may or may not be
an amateur interior
designer/architect.
[Lizzy] Wow, wow.
I downloaded an app and
What would be a life in the
world
without Jessica Marie Alba?
You too can be
an amateur interior
designer/architect.
That's right. You can be an
architect,
and you can be an architect, and
you can be an architect.
Amateur.
[Jessica] And then for closet,
this could really be her closet
on this side.
Have some kind of walk-in
situation.
But it'd be nice-- Say, if this
is the wall here.
He needs a closet.
Whatever you like. I've learned
that.
Just whatever you-- Whatever you
like.
This whole transformation for
their bedroom
and their bathroom is going to
be
-It's gonna be chic. -a game
changer.
-I wanna give her -[Lizzy] A
game changer.
space so she can really start
thinking about self-care.
Definitely. Because for a new
mom,
self-care is the last thing you
think about.
-[Jessica] Yeah. -But it's the
most important
with a newborn.
I want her to take that
luxurious bath.
I want her to walk into her
walk-in closet
Go ahead. Feel it, girl.
and be a queen, and be like,
"What do I feel like wearing
today?
A freakum dress, maybe?"
-Hey! -It don't even matter.
Hey!
"Who cares if I'm home all day?"
I agree.
-You know? -I know.
-Because that is called sanity.
-[Lizzy laughing]
And you need it when you have a
little baby.
[laughter]
Jess, you haven't seen the
floors.
-No. -[Lizzy] So, Tinku and I
pulled up all of the carpet that
was in here,
and this is the floor that was
underneath.
However, you're not gonna be
happy with me.
[Jessica and Lizzy] What?
[TJ] We were hoping to be able
to grind it and refinish it.
It's been done so many times, we
can't grind it anymore.
-It's down to a tiny groove.
-[Lizzy] Ohh
So, we're kind of in a hot spot.
-[Lizzy] No! -[TJ] So, yeah.
And then we noticed in a couple
spots
in the house, it's a little
soft.
So, we're having issues with
We may have to re-brace it
below, put a new subfloor.
-[Lizzy] Wow. -[TJ] So, it's
pretty bad
in the living room.
So, if you go in the corners,
you'll definitely have
-[Lizzy] All the corners? -[TJ]
Yeah.
And that spot right there next
to the window, it's pretty bad.
-[Lizzy] Where? Here? -[TJ] So
right about there.
-[TJ] See it? -[Jessica and
Lizzy] Ooh!
[TJ laughs]
[Lizzy] Wow. Whoa.
-[Jessica] That's actually
-[TJ] So, we're gonna need
to open it up and see what's
going on.
[Jessica] That's actually
dangerous.
[Lizzy] That's scary.
Honestly, that was really scary
when we found that.
Scary as it gets.
Because as a baby, a baby's
crawling around.
No, no. As a human person
sitting on a couch
-and it falls down. -But also
kids.
-It's scary. -And I'm so glad
that we found it, because
if we hadn't looked even in that
area
Yeah. I mean, it just wasn't
safe the way it was.
-That bums me out. -[TJ] I know.
Me too.
-Oh, look at this. -Hi!
-Plant heaven. -Hello!
Plants are an easy and
affordable design hack
Because taking care of a newborn
is already hard enough.
So, for our pet friendly
options, we have the fittonias.
-Oh, these are cute. -So, these
are pet-friendly.
[Ava] And we have some smaller
ones also.
That one is an areca palm.
[Jessica and Lizzy] An areca
palm.
-[Lizzy] Areca palm. -Oh, it's
right there.
[Lizzy laughs]
[straining] I really like this
one.
-[Ava laughs] -[Jessica grunts]
I don't know where you're going.
[Ava laughs] Would you like for
me to take this for you?
[Jessica] Okay. How do we pot a
plant?
I will use some gloves.
[Lizzy] Of course, you will,
Princesa.
-Of course, you will, Princesa.
-No shame in my princess game.
[Ava] To start, you can squeeze
the sides to loosen it up.
[Lizzy] Okay. Okay, that's a lot
that fell off.
-[Ava laughs] -[Lizzy] Wow.
[Ava] Okay. You did great.
[Lizzy] You're not potting any
of my plants.
[Ava] We're gonna put some of
the soil
[Lizzy] Why am I racing?
Why do I feel like this is a
race?
[Ava laughs]
[Ava] And you kind of want to
leave a bit of a lip
-[Lizzy] Okay. -so that when
you water it,
the water doesn't just kind of
like overflow.
[Lizzy] Oh, okay.
Well, she's not leaving any room
on top for water.
[Ava] So, you can go ahead and
press down now,
maybe a little bit lighter.
[Lizzy] Just gentle.
This is how she treats her
children.
Just rough and tough.
[Jessica] I just feel like
Martha Stewart.
[Lizzy] Really?
[Jessica] I'm like Maria
Stewart.
[Lizzy] Wow.
[Jessica] Are you nervous?
-Am I nervous? -About this?
-Should I be? -I don't know.
-Does it need to go in more?
-[Ava] No.
I don't think that you need to,
you're pressing pretty hard.
[Jessica] I'm really into my
abilities.
[Lizzy] This can be very
soothing.
I'm impressed. You're doing a
great job.
[Lizzy] All right, I'm excited.
[Jessica] So, if you were going
to
[Lizzy] Oh, my God.
This is like the everlasting
scene!
If you were going to choose your
favorite
-My-- Me? -Oh, this is a
competition.
If it were-- If you were like my
favorite.
-Just gorgeous. -Please don't
make me choose.
-Please? -[laughter]
We all know who the winner is.
It's me.
-[Lizzy] Wow, okay. -[TJ] What
do you think?
This is a big difference.
We actually have walls up. This
is great.
Dry wall, you can see everything
now.
-Yes. -You can actually feel it.
Jamar has his huge closet now
which is great for him.
Maimuna has her walk-in closet.
This is awesome.
But you know what I'm realizing,
one of the pain points in this
room for them
was the fact that when you walk
in,
there were multiple doors.
-[TJ] Yeah. -And now we've
literally
just added two more doors.
There's two more doors, right.
I'm like, "Oh my God.
How do we design this space
where you don't walk in this
room
and just see a walls of doors?"
-I'm going to freak out. -You're
going to freak out.
[Lizzy] What are our options
here, Tinku?
We could do like a traditional
closet door
where they slide and one goes
across the other.
So, if you don't want actual
doors, you know.
[Lizzy] I don't know. I just
don't feel like that's
-elevated enough. -You can do
bifold doors also.
Yeah, I don't know, it's just
throwing me off
that there's literally three
frames
-That's a lot of doors. -Bam,
bam, bam.
[Lizzy] I mean, look, worst
case,
because I know we're running
behind on this one,
and I wanna get the family in as
soon as possible.
-Okay. -Just to kind of
-See how to make it look.
-hide it.
-Make it more seamless. -[TJ]
Yeah.
Well, you notice the floors? You
didn't mention anything?
Oh, my gosh! They look amazing.
-Yeah. -Wow.
[TJ] Pretty similar to the
original,
the joists are repaired.
We'll sand it. We're gonna stain
it.
Okay, awesome.
We had issues with the flooring
where they had to bring
everything up.
And we had to put all new
subflooring down.
-But-- -But wait, subflooring?
-Isn't it subflooring? -Yeah.
I'm just impressed that you know
that term.
Thank you. [scoffs]
Girl, I have been doing my
homework.
Wow, you are learning.
-I mean -What?
You can just call me an
architect now.
-Contractor. -Whatever.
Okay, okay.
This is great.
This is so much bigger than what
we could have ever imagined.
Yeah. And this tile you guys
picked
-came out great. -It's so
beautiful.
I love that we're doing it
vertically instead of
horizontally.
It makes it feel like it's so
much bigger of a space
-than what it really is. -Yeah.
This wasn't that big, and I'm a
little surprised
that we actually fit the tub.
You have the shower, individual
vanities.
Are you kidding? We have an
entire wet area
in this bathroom, which is
amazing,
We can do the fixed piece of
glass here.
-[Lizzy] Mm-hmm. -And then
instead
of leaving this open, we'll have
the door here.
Right. The beauty in that is,
is that when she's in this space
and she has baby alone,
she can have him in the bathroom
with her,
and she can still see
-through those doors. -Right.
And when she's taking a shower
or whatever.
So, what's this? What's
happening?
We just have to tile.
I don't know how long you're
willing to
We're on a time clock. Let's do
it. Come on.
[TJ] Nice.
-Not bad. Okay. -[Lizzy] Ooh.
Ooh. Okay.
[Lizzy] Okay, hold on.
Here we go.
-Like that? -[TJ] Yeah.
-Little bit more on the bottom.
-Okay.
-I need more. -[TJ] Yeah.
You tiled? What?
You know what? This is what I'm
talking about.
Well, how does she think these
things get done, okay?
I think I obviously have
gotten
-I think you got the hang of it.
-the hang of this.
I can't I just can't. Ah! I
can't.
Look at that. I'm a pro.
This is when your friends don't
really see you.
-You know what I mean? -I see
you.
Your friends don't really see
you.
Do you see me?
-I've just never seen you tile.
-Do you see me?
I've never seen you tile before.
-Anyway, I'm an excellent tiler.
-Really?
[laughs]
Who does it with a full manicure
like a fool?
-[TJ] Nobody. -[Lizzy] Not one
person.
[Lizzy] Hi, Amy.
[Amy on phone]
We are so excited about the
Uzzel family.
And we're not closet experts,
so we're really happy you're
here.
One of our design goals was to
solve the closet chaos
We did it by giving Jamar his
own closet in the primary
But as a new mom, it has to be
as functional and on point as
possible.
She has to be able to move
through that closet
quickly and as efficiently as
possible
in the mornings when she's out
that door.
So, we asked Amy,
to come in and give us some
help.
Okay. So, show us some ideas.
What's happening? Are you in the
closet now?
I'm in the closet now.
[Jessica]
[Amy]
[Lizzy]
-[Lizzy]
Cute.
[both] I love that.
-[Lizzy] Yeah.
Yay. Thanks, Amy.
-This is exciting. -Yes.
-Okay. Bye! -We can't wait. Bye.
[Jessica] Tinku, you're here.
Where's Lizzy?
Lizzy. Earth to Lizzy.
-[Lizzy] Hey, Tinku. -Hey.
-[Lizzy] Hi! -[TJ] I hope you
don't mind
that I came down here. I have--
-[Lizzy] No, of course. -I had
some questions.
-[Lizzy] Okay. -You're not
the easiest to get a hold of.
This is the best. You got us
now.
Yeah. So, now that I know where
you work.
What are we doing?
We have a couple last minute
things.
-Like what? -Wallpaper.
-Okay. -We need that for her
closet.
We talked to Amy about it a
little bit, too.
-[Jessica gasps] -We really want
like the idea
-[Jessica] Feel it! -of this
to be very glam.
-[Jessica] Feel it. -[TJ] I
think
-she found one she likes.
-[Lizzy] This is nice.
Oh, no. But look, that's pretty
cool.
-[Jessica] It's a hug. -Oh, like
the indenta--
-I love that. -Like she's gonna
be like
-It's texture. -"This is my
closet."
[Lizzy] Oh, that's really nice.
That one's the best one.
-[Lizzy] This is great.
-[Jessica] Wait a minute.
[Jessica] Oh, she chic.
-[Lizzy] That's cute.
-Chic-a-rama.
[Jessica] It feels like suede.
-[Lizzy] This one's very shiny.
-[Jessica] Mm-hmm.
It is shiny.
This one is more beautiful.
-"This one's more beautiful."
-If I was a cat,
I would be like Don't you
know how cats do that thing?
[Lizzy] We're done here.
[Lizzy] So, paint colors.
So, a lot of people make a
mistake
and they choose a white for
their house.
-[Lizzy] Do they? -[Jessica]
That's too
-[Lizzy] Stark white.
-yellow, and it's stark.
-You're right. -So, are we
looking
for something more along the
color of your sweater?
-Yeah. -Okay, great.
-[Jessica] Just creamy. -So, I
think
if we choose one of these
colors,
I think it should be, like you
said,
in like the living room, dining
room area.
More of the common spaces
where they would entertain or
have people over.
-[Lizzy] Yes? -[Jessica] Which
do you like?
[TJ] Which one looks most like
her sweater?
[Lizzy] Let's see. Shoelace is
nice.
-Swiss coffee is nice. -Swiss
coffee.
[Jessica] Maybe shoelace.
[Lizzy] All right, cool.
Shoelace.
-[TJ] All right. -[Lizzy] Great.
Perfect.
You should write it down.
-Just so you don't forget. -[TJ]
You got it.
[Jessica] And then, maybe for
the baby,
you can do a two-tone with the
trim and the walls.
[Lizzy] I like 'skinny jeans' a
lot.
-[Jessica] Okay. -So
[Jessica] That is cool.
-[Lizzy] Dynasty. -[Jessica]
Mm-hmm.
All right, cool.
All right, so skinny jeans and
Dynasty marquee. Yeah!
I think that's it, actually.
That was quick.
-Nice. -Now you know where to
come
-to get answers. -Yeah. When
you're busy,
I can actually get this done
really quickly.
Now we have to work on my
parents' house.
[TJ] That's That's going to
take a whole lot of time.
-[Jessica] Oh, God. -[Lizzy]
Seriously.
[Lizzy] This is our favorite
time.
Do you have little nerves in the
pit of your stomach?
You know, I just hope that they
like what we did.
-It was a situation
-Situation.
-and we hope -True.
that they are going to be
happy.
-Let's do this. -[Lizzy] Okay.
[Lizzy] First, home.
Cleaning is always super
important.
They have these eco-cleaning
refills.
[Lizzy] Yes. -Let's get them the
whole kit.
Laundry detergent. They have a
little one,
so stains are going to be
important.
[Jessica] And let's get stuff
for mom.
Because she's a new mom, and she
needs to be pampered.
-[Lizzy] Yes. Unscented.
-[Jessica] Soaking salts.
The body cream is nice for
everyone.
Oh, my gosh. I love this body
cream.
-[Lizzy] I definitely say oil.
-Maybe the oil. Yeah.
-And lotion. -[Lizzy] Lotion.
[Lizzy] One thousand percent.
[Jessica] Yeah. Let's grab stuff
for baby.
Maybe we just take this,
because this is like a
night-time kit.
-[Lizzy] Oh, great. -Yeah.
[Lizzy] Okay. Okay.
How are you going to carry all
this?
Well, you know, and then maybe
this.
[Lizzy] So cute. Yes.
Towels, towels, bath towels.
All right.
-I'm not really sure -I want
to see you do it.
-[strains] Ooh. -[Lizzy] There
you go.
It's almost like you have three
kids.
-Interesting. -[Jessica groans]
-I think this is great. -
AndTV magic.
[Lizzy laughs]
[music continues]
[Lizzy] Yay!
This looks insane.
-This is incredible. -Today is
the day!
[Lizzy] Okay. We still have a
little bit more
to do before they get here.
-[Jessica] This is heavy. -Okay.
-You need any help? -[Jessica]
Yes.
[Lizzy] Don't drop it.
[Jessica exclaims]
[Lizzy] Okay. Turn.
Oh, my gosh, this nursery!
[Lizzy] Oh, my goodness.
This blue though, and this
darker
[Jessica] I'm so happy we did
the tone.
You instantly elevate a space
-I know. -when you use
-these, like, tonal colors
-Yeah. Yeah.
that complement each other.
[Jessica] I'm gonna put this in
here.
Towel, such a cute little
moment.
[Lizzy] It's such a great hack
to bring in
fresh green plants into any
space in the house.
[Jessica] I mean, I went a
little overkill
because I love babies, and I'm
not having anymore. Heh.
[Lizzy] Awesome sauce.
Oh, I love a good gallery wall.
[Jessica] Me, too.
What's wrong with me?
[Lizzy] I don't know. You should
get with it, though.
[Jessica] Oh, there we go. That
one's not
[Lizzy] Jess, what do you want
me to do?
[Jessica] I want you to hang it
on the teeth.
-What do you want me to do? -So,
it doesn't fall down.
[Lizzy] Oh, this is on the
teeth, yeah.
[Jessica] There you-- No.
[Lizzy] What do you want me to
do?
I don't know what you want me to
do.
Okay, I'm doing my best.
[Jessica] And what is the tip,
Lizzy?
[Lizzy] Just make it pretty.
-[Jessica] No. -Damn it.
[Jessica] You don't have
children
You don't have kids. That's the
tip?
[Jessica] No. You don't have
children's photos
-in your bedroom. -[Lizzy] Oh.
-[Jessica] Because -[Lizzy]
Why?
[Jessica] It's better just to
have the couple photos
because it helps with intimacy.
-The room is all about you.
-Mm-hmm.
Now, I know you got some of
Hayes' stuff
in your bedroom next to your
bed,
so why are you lying to these
people?
-I've seen it. -[Jessica] No, I
just have--
-I've seen it. I've seen it. -I
just have the paintings.
-Mmm. I've seen it. -I don't
have any photos of him.
-He's not staring at me. -[Lizzy
mockingly vocalizing]
I have some paintings he made
me.
-[Lizzy] Mm-hmm. -It looks
really nice.
[Lizzy] Okay. It's beautiful,
but they're about to be here any
second.
-Okay. Let's go. Let's go.
-[Lizzy] Let's go.
[Lizzy] Are you guys excited?
-[Jamar] Yeah. -[Maimuna] Stupid
excited.
[Lizzy] We are stupid excited
for you.
Yes.
[Maimuna]
When we were driving here,
I asked Jamar what was he most
excited about,
today, our wedding day,
or when we went on our
honeymoon.
And we both agreed today.
-Like we're just ahh! -Yeah.
All right, this is what I will
tell you.
This is for you.
This is the space you will live
in,
that you will make memories in.
This is for you both and Zakai.
This is your space. You ready?
-Yes. -[Lizzy] All right.
All right, let's go. Let's go!
My heart just stopped beating
really.
[Jessica and Lizzy] Welcome
home!
-[Maimuna screams] -[Jamar] Oh,
my goodness!
[Maimuna] Oh, my gosh!
-[Lizzy] You ready? -[Maimuna]
Yes! Let's go!
My heart just stopped beating
really.
[Jessica and Lizzy] Welcome
home!
-[Maimuna] Oh, my gosh. -[Jamar]
Oh, wait!
[Maimuna] Look at these floors.
[Maimuna]
This is beautiful.
[Jamar]
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]
-[Jessica]
-But this is your stuff.
-[Lizzy] This is your stuff.
[Jessica]
-[Lizzy]-[Jessica]
[Maimuna]
We have a table that actually
fits in this space!
[Maimuna]
functional.
-And it flows, too. -And it
flows.
[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
-[Maimuna]
Look at these floors!
[Lizzy]
when we walked in this space
and met you for the first time,
Maimuna looked us dead in our
eyes,
and she said, "I do not want a
dining area."
We don't have a use for a table
this large.
-You don't want a table? -No.
-I did say that. -[laughter]
[Lizzy] We looked at each other
afterwards and said,
"Who is she trying to trick up
in here?"
Because obviously, she never had
a baby eating solids before.
-[laughter] -[Lizzy] On her
couch!
-We were like -[Jessica] Are
you kidding?
[Maimuna]
[Jamar] That's nice. Heh.
[Maimuna] My goodness, this is
beautiful.
-It's tea, it's coffee. -[Jamar]
Yeah, this is nice.
-It's a whole thing. -[Maimuna]
Oh, my gosh.
-It's a whole moment. -[Jessica]
Mm-hmm.
[Jessica] When you get your
five/ten minutes,
which is few and far between
-Let me tell you. -we want
you to indulge.
-Right. -And this forces you
-[Maimuna] Right. -to take a
moment
to just stop,
let it take its time and just
sit in the moment.
[Lizzy] And we'd love for you to
look in here.
[Jessica] This is a mom hack.
You don't want to go in the
nursery
every time you change the baby.
-So, you always have this.
-[Jamar] Okay.
You put it out, you change his
butt, you put it away.
It's always here.
You don't have to go all the way
back
-into his room. -Sometimes you
just don't
-feel like it, right? -[Maimuna]
Right. Right.
-[Lizzy] Great to have all over.
-That's so smart.
[Jamar] All right, let's try
this one.
[Maimuna] What?
I don't know where you're
playing video games now,
-but this is this one's mine!
-[Jamar] Oh, no!
[laughter]
[Jessica] Maimuna, this is your
queendom.
Yes!
[Jessica] This is where you are
gonna work from home.
you have this amazing Murphy bed
[Lizzy] The best part
is you don't have to remove the
picture.
-[Jessica]
We really just used
a lot of things you already have
in the house.
-[Maimuna] Yeah? -[Lizzy] This
is your desk.
-[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
This is your Murphy bed.
We literally just made a couple
improvements.
Obviously, the paint color is
one of
-our favorite colors ever.
-[Maimuna] I love this, yeah.
And it feels very like chic,
elevated but feminine.
This is amazing.
-Let's go in here. -[Maimuna]
Let's go in.
[Jamar] Ooh
[both joyfully laugh]
[Jamar] I can't see.
You haven't even opened the
door.
Oh, wow.
-Zakai has his own little room.
-Holy crap!
[laughter]
[Jamar] There's no office
anymore.
Oh, he has a nursery.
Looks so much better than what I
did.
[joyful laughter]
[Jessica] Do you like it?
Oh, this is beautiful.
[Jessica] Before, the space was
trying to do a lot.
-Yes. -It was a spare bedroom.
-It was an office. -[Lizzy]
Office.
[Jessica] It was his room.
We really wanted to make this
room all about Zakai.
[Jessica]
it would be just like a
beautiful space
-for you guys -Yes.
to spend time with baby boy.
Like a sacred space for him and
for you.
And it's common.
[Jessica] And you can do tummy
time.
You can play. You can read
books.
[Maimuna] Oh, this is beautiful.
[Lizzy]
[excited laughter]
Yo, this is-- This is-- Oh, look
at the pictures.
[Jamar]
Look how much room you have to
walk--
Oh, what's that door back there?
[Maimuna]
It looks so much more spacious
and less cluttered in here, my
goodness.
[Jessica] And this is an
appropriately-sized bed frame
-[Jamar] It is. It is. -for
the room.
Oh, and your lights, right here,
are all hooked up to a Roku set
that you can have an app
downloaded on your phone,
and you can control your lights
and other features.
There's a camera in the baby
room.
-You can see the baby anytime.
-[Jamar] That's nice.
That's amazing.
[Jamar]
Oh! It's a It's a walk-in
closet.
-Oh! Look at this closet!
-[Jamar] Look at the space!
-Oh, my goodness. -[Maimuna
exclaims]
[Maimuna]
I don't see any clothes up here
for you.
So, I mean, I think this is just
mine.
It's also pink though, too.
Oh, look at the chandelier.
[Maimuna]
-[Lizzy] Jamar. -[Jessica] All
right, Jamar.
[Lizzy] Jamar, it's your turn.
Do you notice two new doors in
your bedroom?
[Jamar] I do see two new doors
here.
Oh, my goodness!
[Maimuna]
[Jamar]
I may stick a couple of dresses
over there.
[Jamar] No, you can't. There's
plenty of space in there.
Oh, no, we gave you a whole
other closet in here!
[Jessica] And you also have your
whole office.
[Maimuna] That's true. Okay.
[Lizzy]
Do you remember what it looked
like?
[Jamar] Kick the door in. Let's
go.
[Jamar laughs]
[screams] Look at this!
-[Jamar] She is in the tub!
-[Maimuna] Oh, my goodness.
[Maimuna] Are you kidding me?
[Jamar] This is crazy.
[Maimuna] Are you kidding me?
-Are you kidding me? -[Jamar]
This is crazy.
[Jamar laughs]
[Maimuna] My whole world is
blown right now.
[Maimuna laughs]
[Maimuna]
Remember that giant hallway
-[Jessica]-[Maimuna]
[Jessica][Maimuna]
[Jessica]
-[Maimuna]
-[Jamar]
[Jamar]
We both know what it's like to
have a new baby.
We needed to create a space for
you guys
to be able to come in and chill.
Take the load off of the world
and know that you are in your
intimate sanctuary space.
You guys knocked it out of the
park.
-[Jessica] Yay! -Honestly, it
was so exciting.
In this house, every room served
every purpose.
-[Jamar] Right. -You guys are
really busy.
You're sleep deprived. You're
time starved.
And so, we wanted to relieve
some of that pressure for you.
So, when you come home, you can
just you can chill.
And this home can feel like this
is your vacation
-from the rest of the world.
-[Maimuna and Jamar] Yes.
-[Maimuna] Absolutely. -I'm
gonna cry now.
I'm gonna cry. I'm gonna cry.
I'm just so happy for y'all.
-I really am. -[Maimuna] Aw
I'm just really happy for y'all.
You deserve it.
And we're just so happy
that we could be a part of this
moment.
Walking into the house and
seeing all of the changes,
[Maimuna]
My office is amazing.
They did a fantastic job.
I absolutely love it.
[Jessica] Thank you for letting
us
take over for three months.
-[Jessica] All right -[Lizzy]
Bye.
-[Jessica] Bye. -Thank you. We
love you.
Thank you, guys.
