Beautiful people #
Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo.
- Hey.
- Mornin'.
- How's it goin'?
- Ooof.
Good enough.
We're down to the wire.
I was just thinking last night,
"Oh my God, it's six of us."
- That's not a lot.
- Half is gone.
That's crazy.
- How does it feel to sleep like a winner?
- It feels good.
I'm still digesting this whole fact that,
like, you know, I won last night.
I feel like somebody needs to, like,
slap me in the face,
- like, "This is what happened last night."
- Come here, I'll slap you in the face.
Wait, after I do my hair.
But I think it's good
that you have this win.
I mean, it was also about time.
You've been turning out these looks,
and they'll like say if it's great,
but, then, boom!
- You want to win, you know what I mean?
- Yeah.
You're not here to, like, sit in the corner.
- We both came here to win.
- Yeah, but I already have a win.
You do have a win.
Oh, here they are.
Hey, guys! Over here!
This is beautiful.
Konichiwa.
Konichiwa.
- Hello, designers.
- Hi.
Heidi and I want to welcome you
to Sensoji Temple.
- This is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.
- -Wow.
Tokyo is such a dichotomy
of the old and the new.
- Di Tell me one more time.
- Dichotomy.
- Say the word again?
- Dichotomy.
It means opposing
or contradictory forces.
Kind of like the ying and the yang?
- Yeah, you know. Kind of like us.
- Like us?
We're kind of opposing and contradictory,
yet we get along so harmoniously.
Yes, we do.
Well, Tokyo has a lot of ancient elements
and traditions,
yet it is also a very modern city.
- It's a leading force in technology.
- Mm-hmm.
So, for your next collection,
we want you to create two looks
that represent the concept
of opposing forces.
Whatever your creative interpretation
of opposing forces may be.
Past versus present.
Feminine versus masculine.
Good versus evil.
It's completely up to you.
Mm, I love that.
Mm, I see the eyeballs. I see
the little hamster already on its wheel.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
And as a reminder, at least one of your looks
must be accessible. Sander
I mean, it was amazing what you did,
- but
- -Not accessible.
They put like this bullet on my head,
and I kind of really don't want to do it,
like I think it should be a choice.
Like, Esther can choose to do color;
I can choose to be accessible, you know?
So, we're beginning this assignment here at
one of the oldest buildings here in Tokyo.
But for your fashion showcase,
we're going full ultra-modern.
Okay? And digital.
- Yes.
- Ooh.
Your fashion show will be an immersive,
digital fashion showcase.
This is going to be projected
onto the staircase
in our very own Amazon Fashion studio.
Yes! Yes, yes, yes.
And you will choose from a series of themes.
It's first-come, first-served.
I am so into this.
Like, this is the future of fashion.
This is the future of media and art.
This is my jam.
Your fashion show will be tomorrow night.
We're close to the end,
so let's get with it, people.
And I'll be checking on you
in the morning.
It's not possible.
And don't forget, the winning look
will be sold immediately on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
Who is ready to win?
Ji?
- So, good luck to all of you.
- Thank you.
I can't wait to see who's gonna win this one.
I know.
# I know I play with fire #
# I know the fire can burn #
# I keep lighting the matches
from matchbooks #
# Breathing you in, you got me hooked #
# I guess there's no lessons learned #
We have to choose
a digital background,
and my theme, it's the graphic one
with all the black and white lines,
and it's bold, and it's perfect
for this assignment.
Oh, look, it's so cool.
Let me see yours?
Play yours, let's see what it looks like?
- It is the inside of a
- A computer.
I got the nature.
I have a theme behind it.
The proportions, you know, this huge thing
- I know.
- That big one.
Oh, my God. It's so cool.
We're at a Buddhist temple.
It has hit me to do a contrast
between Judaism and Buddhism.
Basically, I'm taking two different religions
that are completely separate
and mixing those two.
My digital backdrop is an underwater world.
Water is very soft, and it's very floaty.
So, at the moment,
I'm thinking of something very rigid.
And I really love the temple
and the golden thing
on top of this temple here,
which has all these golden rings.
It will be contrasted in this water world.
What is it supposed to do?
A lot of thoughts are coming over me.
I was raised in a super Catholic family.
# And you say I'm a demon #
with really loving, supporting parents.
But at an early age, I realized I was gay,
raised in a Catholic family,
and that was when I first started wearing,
like, all black.
It was representing, like,
the deep depression I didn't realize I had.
It took years and years to crawl out of that.
Now, I'm a totally well-adjusted adult.
I have a loving family.
I'm proud to be gay.
But I also have this religious past.
It's beautiful.
The opposing forces
I'm thinking about right now
is that, me, as this loud, freaky, gay man,
coming from a religious base,
there's an opposition there
that will never meet up.
But I play with that tension in my work.
I play with it in my life.
It's always inspired me.
But it's complicated.
It's really complicated.
###
# I'm letting go to all I know #
I got really inspired at the temple,
so, I wanted to make a dress
which is inspired, actually, by this thing.
So, it will have a lot of rings,
and I think I will even do it in gold.
I'm pushing myself to go a bit
out of my boundaries here
- Four meters.
- Correct.
but the accessible look
will be done again in black.
Thank you! Arigato!
Let me see this again.
Look, it's a front panel of a shirt,
back panel of a shirt,
and then it's like draped sleeves.
Well, my inspiration is exactly
what they want for the challenge.
They want, like, cheap t-shirts
- There's no structured sleeve?
- No.
and, like, garbage.
And I'm gonna just Ugh.
I'm not with it. Stupid.
Hi. Can I do six?
I'm taking the elements
of the Hasidic Jewish outfit
you know, it's like the black suit
but I'm not using black. I'm taking a risk.
So, I bought two different shades of blue,
and then for the Buddhist look,
it will be very flowy
and, you know, very zen.
It will be the colors of the sun.
Arigato.
###
What's your vibe?
So, I have, like, the graphic,
abstract background
Yeah.
And my entire brand's about, like, cultures,
so, I'm gonna do, like,
- two opposing cultures.
- Oh, nice.
Yeah, I did this fortune,
and it says
my request will be granted, so
I'm requesting I win!
Yeah. And it also says I'm gonna get
a sugar daddy, so
I hope that comes true.
I wonder what Sander's gonna do
for his accessible.
I don't care.
Here it is.
These are all too for me.
I heard him
gruntin' and fussin', and,
like, "I'm gonna make an accessible look,"
but I don't think he gets it.
In order to be a good designer, you have
to merge creativity and accessibility.
Thank you so much.
Hi. Um One meter?
The duality is basically
between creative and consumerism.
That's where I'm doing t-shirts.
Basically, that is, like,
the consumption part,
'cause that's the only thing
that would actually sell.
And then I'm reusing them in kind of my way,
you know, in a consumer kind of way.
Boom! And then, next shot,
on the plane to Belgium.
Hi, guys. So, I'm at the Robot Restaurant,
which is one of the biggest
tourist attractions here in Tokyo,
and I thought I'd ask Chiara
to come and join me.
###
I want to go in the fish.
Hi!
Ooh!
Woo hoo!
Very Tokyo.
And, you know what?
I asked them if we could join them.
- Oh, my God. So, we're going?
- Yes.
It's so crazy.
Fasten your seatbelt.
This is gonna be a bumpy ride.
So, we're good versus evil.
GOOD!
EVIL!
"Dichotomy." I learned that word today.
Hmm-hmm.
Are you ready?
Ahh!
Yes!
Good is the winner.
###
- Hey.
- Hi.
Yeehaw!
And the meds begin.
I'm using, like, old-school houndstooth.
Like, it's one of the most classic
textile patterns ever.
And I have this idea of darkness and light.
using old-timey tapestries with, like,
new-timey PVC and some leather.
It's like fused together.
I think it's gonna look really cool.
Whoa.
I am creating these, like, 3D lettering.
It's my name in Korean,
in, like, really big font.
It's definitely not accessible,
but I feel like I need to do something
that's, like, more fun for me,
and something that's new, so
That's what I'm doing.
I've never gotten a bad critique,
but it's like not enough for me
to be, like, in the middle.
Like, I'm not here to be okay.
Like, I'm not here to be "good."
I just want to do the best work
I've done in my whole life,
and it's really frustrating.
I want to say, "Hey, I'm here!
I'm still here!" Like "Do you see me?"
Wow!
This is a game-changer, you know?
This is a game-changer.
- But I'm just
- Hey, it's the perfect color for you.
If Esther sends another collection
of all black,
they are going to just feed her
to the wolves.
I'm excited to use a little bit of color.
I mean, if you look at me, it's not
only black. You see something else.
So, I'm using the other things.
So, I will have one black outfit
and one gold outfit.
This is horrible.
I'm just not feeling it.
I don't want to make it wearable.
but I'm at the point
that I'm pissed enough about it
that I'm just like, "I'm just gonna do it."
But I'm going to do it my way.
I feel like everyone's
kind of pushing themselves to show range.
We're all kind of taking that chance.
- It's kind of chic, right?
- Yeah.
Ah hah.
- You're doing all white?
- Mm-hmm.
With silver.
That's cool.
My backdrop is space.
So, I'm going to keep the looks very clean,
but it's going to have
like a futuristic vibe to it.
So I'm really excited.
I just have to make sure
it doesn't get too costumey.
What you do is, literally, it's art.
- Like, you don't want to cheapen that.
- No.
And I feel like now with the designs,
I'm doing something that's almost like
I'm making a mockery out of my own misery
with that whole discussion of wearability
Right.
We're here to create new things.
We're here to make brands that fill the gaps
of what's missing in the fashion world.
They say all the time,
"Break the noise, break the noise,"
until you break the noise, and they're like,
"But it's not sellable."
I want to make my stance
very clear to them,
that my brand is streetwear
mixed with couture, you know?
It is something that, yes,
you might not wear it today on the street,
but I'm also designing for the future.
Yellow? Fun. What are you making?
- I'm making a jacket.
- Like, structured?
- Um, no.
- Baggy?
- I'm doing me.
- You're doing you.
After winning last night, it just
gave me confidence to keep pushing myself.
And it felt really good using color
yesterday, so I'm taking another risk,
and taking a risk kind of feels good,
you know?
It's like walking on, like,
the wild side a little bit.
- Everybody got color this time.
- Yeah. Even Esther's doing color.
When she came out with that,
I was like, "Whoa-ho-ho!"
I actually feel a bit insecure
leaving my comfort zone,
deciding to go into color.
It was like, "Oh, why am I doing it?"
But what I like about this material
is the fluorescent edges when you cut it.
When I saw this fabric,
it reminded me right away
to all the colorful fishes
in the backdrop.
It's going to be wild.
- Looks really dope.
- Thank you.
We'll see what they think about it,
you know what I mean?
But these are also pockets.
So, it can go from unwearable to
wearable.
A normal skirt. Normal.
- I like that.
- Do you see that this makes a t-shirt?
- Like, a little shirt?
- Oh!
Everything has a look of a t-shirt in there.
So, I took a theme that was, like,
a really sellable piece of garment,
and then I want to show how I do it,
like, you know
'cause that's my duality
between consumerism and creativity.
I love it. It's almost making fun
of the judges, in a way.
I'm gonna have to try to keep
my cool when I talk to them.
I don't think I have to prove a point
to the judges.
I have to put my foot down to the judges.
###
Ooh, wow, I love that fabric, Megan.
- The silver is so cool.
- It doesn't look cheeseball?
I don't think it looks cheap.
I just don't want it to look like
Starship Enterprise.
It could be really, really good,
or really, really bad.
# I feel it goin' down
Down, down, down #
# Somehow, there's tension all around #
Uhh. I feel like
I've been slicing pizza for, like, two hours.
Are you good for the seamstress?
I hope so.
You're not eating?
Um, I'm gonna finish fusing this first
and light candles,
and then I'm gonna go eat.
Shabbat Shalom.
Well, I do need my Shabbat today,
'cause bitch knows I need a prayer.
- Are you stressing?
- Ahhh!
Imagine:
Next episode, Sander becomes Jewish,
on Making the Cut.
Anybody that wants to join,
you're more than welcome.
- I'll Shabbat.
- Let's go Shabbat.
Today's Shabbat,
by lighting the candles,
you're blessing the Sabbath
and showing gratitude.
Shabbat.
Shabbat Shalom.
- Okay, can I do my prayer?
- Okay.
- Can I do mine at the same time?
Yeah.
I wished for a lot of food. Amen.
I'm not Jewish,
but I think I could also use
all the blessings in the world,
so, everything's welcome at this point.
- You're good.
-Shabbat Shalom.
- I feel better. Thank you.
- Shabbat Shalom.
I'm feeling really stressed.
so, it's helpful stepping
outside of this crazy group
and do something just for myself.
# Hold me underwater #
# Hold me underwater 'til I drown #
I always try to stay true to myself,
but at the same time,
it's just the six of us left.
You cannot allow yourself to make a mistake.
# There's one last prayer
before the light fades out #
We all could have good days or bad days.
And then it's over.
# And we drown #
# Go on, do your thing, do your thing
Do it #
Ohio!
This week's assignment
is to create a two-look collection
representing the concept of opposing forces.
Love.
My two opposing forces
are the old and the new.
My duality is consumerism and art.
Yes!
I'm juxtaposing darkness and light.
# You're a superstar #
Our fashion show will be
an immersive, digital fashion showcase.
I think it's gonna look really cool.
I'm really excited to see it.
# Show 'em who's in charge #
# Superstar #
Ooh.
Oh, I love the seamstress. Thank you, Lord.
Yeah, it's been really tough.
I'm just really struggling
with my accessible look.
I want Tim here,
so, I can, like, talk it out with him.
I'm a bit relieved.
She got done with two garments.
I just forgot to put the pattern
for the collar on the top. But it's okay.
I can do it.
I've been pushing my boundaries and working
with fabrics that I don't normally work with.
I'm just really proving to myself
that I can do anything.
So, now I'm creating
the same pants as the top,
and then we'll go see how this day's
gonna turn out for all of us.
- For me, at least.
- I don't really give a about
Sorry, Dad.
Pow, pow, pow!
- Good morning, everyone.
- Good morning!
- It's very quiet in here.
- Oh, yeah.
- I'm eager to weigh in on what you're doing.
- Good morning.
Good morning, Sander.
So, for my duality, I chose creativity
and product, and consumption.
You know, accessibility
and the creative part.
So, I took the idea of a t-shirt
and the idea of a pants,
so they're accessible,
and then re-use them into other pieces,
like the top is gonna be a pants,
this is a pants,
but they're all cut and then another garment.
This is also that you see here
is a t-shirt, and a skirt,
- which becomes pockets
- Oh.
- so that you have, again
- Interesting.
the wearable aspect of it.
First t-shirt I've ever made.
- Well, you can see it's a Sander t-shirt.
- Yeah, of course.
- I believe.
-That's all I need to hear. "I get it."
'Cause I think most of the time
with the fashion that I make,
the worst thing is that people don't get it.
We'll see how it's gonna go down
with the judges.
I don't believe that
that's gonna go good, but we'll see.
Good heavens.
You have a color.
I don't know how to react.
And I was thinking a lot
about this question of how to put the black
in a more appealing way online maybe.
And consequently expand your customer base.
- Exactly.
- Yeah.
So, I thought if I bring in color,
then it should be a show-stopper
and maybe something really over-over.
So, I have a dress with stripes of the gold
and the fluorescent,
so it will really glow in the light.
And then I translated the same thing
into a wearable look.
It's a skirt with just one stripe in it.
- This departure for you
- This time I wanted
- I'm a fan.
- You are? Okay.
You know, I went to the temple yesterday.
So, I've decided to do contrasts
between the two religions.
- So, you know, Judaism and Buddhism.
- Mm-hmm.
So, I'm thinking about
the Hasidic Jew's outfit, but for a woman.
- Uh-huh.
- So, I decided to go with these blues,
number one, 'cause the sky,
I have the nature.
Then, it goes with this skirt.
'Cause, you know, the Hasidic women
wear long skirts.
- Yes.
- But then it has touches of menswear pants.
Okay.
We'll come back to this.
What else are you doing?
So, my twist on the Buddhist robe,
I decided to go with yellow as the Sun.
Mm-hmm.
So, kind of to give it that, still, like,
that kimono-ish vibe,
more loose versus
something more constructed.
Yeah. No, I get it.
I am feeling very positively the whole vibe
of the Buddhist-inspired look.
Yeah.
I am not feeling this Hasidic piece.
- It feels very uptight and constrained.
- Mm-hmm.
And that skirt and this knot it just looks
like a terrible dry-cleaning accident.
- I'm being I'm a blunt instrument
- No, no.
- because I care about you
- Yeah, I know.
- and you're incredibly talented.
- I appreciate it. Thank you.
It just doesn't feel right.
Well, Megan, this is you.
- I can tell.
- Ah! Good.
- My opposing ideas are the old with the new.
- Okay.
And taking traditional silhouettes
and interpreting them in a new way.
I was gonna make kind of an overlay
over this.
Will it be treated like an accessory?
It will be detachable?
I wanted to make it as a belt.
I have a positive response
to the punch that it brings
Yeah!
- My inspiration is darkness and light.
- Okay.
I definitely design in a dark color palette,
but it's not a sad, somber thing.
I really do feel like
you have to go through the dark
to really appreciate the light.
That's why the black and white,
the interlocking houndstooth.
My showpiece is this big coat
with this huge hood.
And then I have a boy who has
this oversized hoodie.
It's gonna have some, like, drawstrings.
It's gonna be a little more streetwear-y.
I'm intrigued.
I drew inspiration from very traditional,
like, Korean clothing
Based on the hanbok?
Yes, the shapes.
- Just modernized it, like very contemporary.
- -Good.
So, this is a sketch,
and it's going to have the lettering
- It's actually my name in Korean.
- Okay.
- It's gonna be, like, all across here.
- Okay.
And my accessible look is a wrap dress.
- So, it's a dress version of a robe.
- Exactly.
And it's going to have
light graphic lettering across here,
and it's just like
an asymmetrical, pleated
- Oh, it's asymmetrical too?
- Mm-hmm.
And the scale of the pleats is different?
- And the blue and the white?
- Yeah.
You have a lot going on.
I understand what you're doing here
with the robe,
but if you're thinking about accessibility,
in its current form, the dress
is very costumey.
I'm pretty overwhelmed,
to be honest.
Sorry. I don't know why I'm getting,
like, emotional.
Like, I've been having, like,
an emotional day.
And I've been, like, holding everything in
and haven't, like, shed a tear today.
Your brain's working in overload.
Just use your instincts more.
Alright, everyone.
You have a lot of work to do this afternoon.
Fortunately, we do not have to travel
for our fashion show.
It's right here, on the staircase
of our very own Amazon fashion studio.
So, keep working hard, and don't overthink.
I'll see you later.
- Thank you, Tim. Bye.
- Bye.
I think that was like
the worst Tim talk I've ever had.
My accessible look,
like, really, really needs work,
and we have very little time left,
so, I'm just like
"What am I doing?"
Like, I really do like my first look.
And I'm doing what I want to do,
so that's good,
but my accessible look also has to be,
like, equally good,
and right now, like, I don't even want that.
So I'm just like
need to take a breather.
# Dream on #
# In my mind I feel you flying, you belong #
# Keep on moving to the music
Dream on #
Alright, I'm actually getting excited now.
- I do not yet have excitement, but
- It will come.
I am hopeful.
I'm working on my big coat,
which is complicated.
I feel super over my head
at the moment.
# Come to another
Dream on #
- New skirt.
- You have to do it again?
I'm doing something brand-new.
I wasn't sure about the skirt.
It's too shiny and too blue,
and I needed something to tone it down.
So, I guess he was right. It was too much.
Right now, it just feels nerve-wracking.
God willing, I got this.
I'm not going home.
Oh, my God.
I'm stressed, I'm nervous.
Especially because this assignment is
a bit terrifying for me.
I'm dying with this thing here.
I wanted to go out of my comfort zone.
Ahh, quite ambitious here, my project.
And as I have the underwater world,
it's a bit like Esther's
pushed into the cold water,
and as her jewelry is so heavy,
she just drowns, drowns, drowns,
and then when she hits the ground,
she opens her eyes,
and there she sees this golden goddess
who's saying, like,
"Esther, don't be afraid. Everything you want
is on the other side of here."
I feel like it's time to stop
holding myself back,
which I think I did all my life.
It's the way I was educated, I grew up,
to always make myself smaller
and give the space to other people.
And I'm so fed up with holding back
my creativity
to really explore and go wild.
It seems like it's the time to
to open up now
and don't be afraid.
It's a very personal journey I'm doing here.
And leaving leaving a very important part
of your life behind,
it's like something you were holding
so intensely,
and then you just open up,
and saying goodbye is always
something emotional.
Hi!
How's it going, man?
Hi! Come.
# Let me spell this out #
Okay, let's go try on clothes.
# Ring my bell #
It needs a bit of work still, but
Can you turn around?
Ooh, wow. I like it.
Okay. You look incredible.
It's gonna look better.
Arigato.
# Let me spell this out #
Oh!
I definitely need some more time
to be less stressed.
Yours is not at all done.
Ooh. Esther, I love the colors.
So cool.
Thank you.
I've never heard you sew so fast, Esther.
Ah, this is the fight of my life here.
- It's so much better than that other shit.
- Very office slut.
I would wear it to the office
if I, like, had a crush on someone.
I do feel confident with my looks.
I believe in all the thought
that goes into it and the meaning of it.
But, you know, you can't help be nervous.
We're top six and soon top five.
- How you doing, JiJi?
- Okay.
I have, like, so many demons in my brain.
I just need to, like, chill the out.
# It's going down tonight #
# Yeah #
# We're going to bring it to the top
'til it's won #
So, I want to keep it very natural, organic.
Yeah, I like that.
# No stopping us #
Okay. Turn around.
# No stopping us #
# Yo #
Esther, a whole new world.
- I love the shoes with it.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
- That's what I'm just trying
Okay. It fits.
Love this.
Like, cool girls would buy this.
In my outfits, I definitely see
my DNA still in there.
But it's like a softer DNA.
I'm doing me this assignment,
but in an accessible way.
- # It's going down tonight #
-We'll see.
Cool.
Whoo! Hello, everybody.
Hello, hello, hello, everybody.
Welcome to our fashion show.
As many of you know,
Japan and Japanese culture
embody the old and the new in a way
that's very unique and special.
And, actually, that's exactly
what our fashion show is about.
Each designer created a two-look collection
embracing opposing forces.
And they can also choose
an immersive digital backdrop.
I could use some fresh air.
You guys?
Ah.
One of the winner's looks will be available
immediately in the Making the Cut store.
It is our honor to introduce
our esteemed judges.
We have creative director of Altuzarra,
Joseph Altuzarra.
Digital entrepreneur
and very powerful fashion influencer
Chiara Ferragni.
Supermodel and fashion icon Naomi Campbell.
Ooh, and we also have a very special guest
in the front row tonight.
Digital influencer, a true fashionista
and social activist,
the cutest virtual character out there,
Noonoouri.
- How fun.
- Hi.
Noonoouri will be featuring the winning look
on her social media pages.
- How exciting is that?
- Wow.
- I think it's time to turn up the volume.
- Yes. Let's do it!
- Alright.
- Enjoy the show, everybody.
###
Great way to start the show.
I like it.
It looks very samurai-inspired.
Love it.
# If there is a fire and we do not have
the water to put it out #
Oh, beautiful.
Beautiful, beautiful.
- I like that one.
- You like that one?
I think the two together is great.
- Yes.
- It's like a houndstooth and a plaid.
- This is a really nice proportion.
- Yeah. Nice details.
I do like that he's evolving
his leather language into something else,
because this feels new for him.
# Fire #
Ooh.
###
I like this, actually.
I love this one.
Your hanbok has appeal from a distance.
It's very, very strong.
- Do you think it's too simple?
- No.
I like the blue and the white.
Yeah, I like the colors she chose.
- I don't like that dress.
- I don't think it's very flattering.
- This fabric doesn't look lux.
- I don't like.
No?
Her first look, I think,
was much stronger.
Oh, my God, that skirt is short
in the back.
- I saw a lot that I didn't want to see.
- Very short.
- Beautiful.
- Wow.
I'm really nervous this one.
- Well, everyone should be.
- Yeah.
###
I don't know. It looks a little bit
like hand-me-downs.
From here, it doesn't look like
such a special kind of outfit, you know?
- I like it.
- You like it?
I do like that there is
this kind of sportiness.
But let's be real.
Who would want to buy that?
Oh, no, no, no. I don't like this.
I don't like at all.
I really don't like the shiny fabric.
It seems a little cheap to me.
Me too.
I expected more from her, for sure.
This looks messy.
It's not as strong as what she showed
last week, no?
No, I'm a little surprised.
The previous looks
that she won on
felt so different from this.
My bigger question about Rinat is just, like,
what her brand is about.
- This is beautiful.
- It is so gorgeous.
###
That's kind of cool.
Looks very couture-esque.
- Love it! It looks so good!
- And you should. It does. It looks great.
- It's a big effect, but it doesn't
- Yeah.
And it does like a bigger effect, I feel,
from far away.
When you go closer, it's not as special.
- I think this is her brand.
- I would buy that too.
Yeah.
She stepped up.
She stepped up.
- Would you wear that?
- Mm-hmm.
- It's very nice.
- I love the fabric.
And doing a suit
in white like this is not easy.
I think this would sell also.
I can't wait to see
what Sander did.
Cool.
###
- I love this color combination.
- I like the whole outfit.
I actually think that shape of the top
is really nice.
- I would buy that.
- Yeah.
- I think it's very sellable.
- Yeah.
- It's good.
- Very nice.
This is, for me, more modern than Jonny.
Yeah, it's very modern.
There's actually a new Sander.
A Sander that the judges haven't seen.
- It's very elegant. Very lux.
- I like it a lot.
I would wear it.
I like the naked back.
- Great work.
- Thank you.
How are you feeling?
- Yeah.
- I'm nervous.
- That's nice!
- I think it's gorge.
The sheen of the plastic at the belt.
I'm not sure about the PVC on the legs.
This one is really not my thing.
It looks very costume-y.
The black, I think, is cool.
And at least she tried with color.
Yeah. She followed our advice.
It's so beautiful with the background.
- Yeah.
- Wow.
So, you like it.
Of course I like it. It's now.
It's what the kids want.
It's what they're wearing.
You all should feel
extremely, extremely proud. Yeah.
Thank you very much for coming
to our fashion show.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Bye, everybody.
- Hi there.
- Hi!
Hi, guys.
Going into this elimination,
I'm not confident.
How much fun was this today?
I'm nervous that I could be going home.
- Hi, everybody.
- Hi!
Designers, that was
a really fun fashion show.
Are you happy with yourselves?
- Definitely.
- Definitely.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that we see
walk down the runway.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
We discussed each
of your two-look collections,
and we have made some decisions.
But they're not necessarily final.
And as you know, a conversation
can change everything.
Jonny and Rinat, you know that.
Oh, yeah.
Alrighty. Jonny, we want to talk to you.
- Hi, guys.
- Hi there.
- Hey.
- Tell us about your collection.
Obviously, I love a dark palette.
But it only exists in contrast to light.
So, my showpiece was a big jacket
with a huge hood.
- But it's nice that it's fitted.
- Mm-hmm.
It fits the torso beautifully.
And then I kind of made
those thigh-high leather
- Stirrups.
- Which worked.
- It was very creative. I was into it.
- Thank you.
It was elegant and chic.
I feel like you could sell all of it.
You know, I love the drop crotch.
I feel like you were very spot-on
on both looks.
- Great, thank you.
- I loved it.
- I appreciate it.
- Well done.
I like the man's more, I think.
When I saw it, I thought it was like
a modern, contemporary samurai.
There's such an interesting kind of softening
of your vocabulary.
And I think it's actually bringing
such a unique perspective
on this very, like, rock-and-roll world
that you've created.
- That is so key for your brand.
- Yeah.
And I think you could really
build into something far greater.
Thank you.
Esther. Tell us about your collection.
Okay. Well, I have been thinking a lot
after our last conversation.
I was thinking a lot about my business.
Black will stay the center of my collection.
I was rather thinking of, how can I go a bit
out of this very matte, dark black,
but integrating something
which is maybe sheer, transparent,
maybe including other fabrics.
So that if I imagine my collection online,
it's not only like just one black wall.
My first idea was the opposition,
having, like, light and shadow.
This gold dress,
it looks a bit like a jellyfish.
It's also, like, tradition
and new technologies with the PVC
and the edges, which are fluorescent.
Also, very colorful sneakers.
And then I actually translated the same thing
into a wearable look.
I was very excited to see you try
something so different
and not only did you do color,
but you did metallics.
I don't know that I would encourage you
to keep on doing metallics with PVC
in your collection,
just because it didn't feel
as authentic to me.
- Yeah.
- PVC's a very difficult material to use,
because when it's too much,
it can kind of look like a costume.
And so, I didn't love
the second outfit for that.
I love that you thought of what we said
to you the last time,
and I love how you solved the problem.
I loved the black dress.
I totally get it, how you kind of created
the transparency.
The gold one I'm not so in love with,
even though I was like, "Bring some color!"
But it was really just the density of not
just being like a black blob, so to speak.
- Yeah.
- So, I liked that.
I liked both your dresses.
Both your dresses I see on the runway now.
And I respect that you stick to who you are.
Yeah. At the end of the day, I actually think
that's what makes you a strong brand.
Thank you.
Hey, guys.
- Hey.
Sander, tell us about your collection.
So, for my duality, I chose something
that is very close to the brand.
I chose product, something that's consumable,
and that against art.
For my looks, I chose something that's
an icon of, like, product, consumption,
like a t-shirt and a pants.
So, I took the normal top,
then I made a cut in
as if there was, like, a t-shirt
inside of the t-shirt.
As you see with the cutout.
And then the skirt basically is cut
like a t-shirt and with the pockets out.
It's like a it creates the shape
of a t-shirt.
- But then to make it wearable again, I
- Ah! My lightbulb just went "ding!"
The same for the pants.
Like, you have normal pants,
and then it kind of doubles on top.
One thing I loved about your two looks,
they really go hand in hand.
And that is so important
during a fashion show,
to have a whole collection,
there is a whole theme.
- Thank you so much.
- I loved the skirt length. I loved the pants.
I would definitely want to wear it.
- I wanted to see more of your collection.
- Keep me.
I think you are a designer.
And I could definitely see you doing
your show in Paris.
Thank you so much.
- Yeah. Grabbed me.
- It means a lot to me.
You know, you have such a conceptual mind
and the question is always, like,
how do you jump from that to product?
You want to make that jump
as organically as possible,
so that commercial isn't becoming
the enemy of artistic.
That, actually, both things can come together
and create something that
People can actually wear.
And that actually is so powerful,
and these looks were really that.
You know, you're very young,
but the way that you think,
I actually think is always very consistent
and always very on-brand for you.
I love that you are full of art,
and you come up with new things.
You re-invented a t-shirt,
and you made it look chic.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Sander
Yes.
You are the winner today.
So, your skirt and your re-imagined t-shirt
will be immediately available on Amazon.
- Ahhh!
- And I have one more surprise for you.
Noonoouri is going to post your winning look
on her social media.
Yay!
Thank you. I love you all.
I was so upset
because of the constant reminder
that it needs to be accessible,
but I get it.
And I'm going to keep pushing myself
to find a middle ground
and find where we do meet and where we can
build up a new generation of fashion.
'Cause at the end of the day,
we're not just designers. We're also brands.
Ji, come talk to us, please.
Hi, guys. It's been a while.
I thought you forgot about me.
No, no, no.
So, please tell us about your collection.
So, I thought this challenge
was really perfect for me,
because working with different dualities
is entirely about my brand,
and I really wanted to bring in
what I know best,
which is my traditional Korean heritage
and the modern Western world,
and merge them together.
And the lettering on the front
is actually my name in Korean.
I really love my first look,
because I think it conceptualizes
everything I want it to say through clothing.
And I wanted the second look to be
the accessible version of that look.
- So, the dress is your commercial look?
- Yes, the second.
- I love your first look.
- Thank you.
- It was raised, your name.
- Yes, it was 3D.
So, it's kind of like the puffer
and I loved the whole traditional, authentic,
basing it on your culture.
The second look for me
was not special.
I wish that the second look would have been
a more feminine version of the first look.
I think it was a little too short.
I could see the booty of the girl.
Didn't love the fabric.
Didn't love the white stitching
on some places,
then the skirt just looked
like it was chopped off on the bottom.
I do like that we saw different silhouettes
from you,
because I feel like it's kind of been
a little bit repetitive to this point.
But I can't say I personally love them
very much.
Okay.
I don't feel that there's been
anything very feminine from you.
- It's been kind of very masculine.
- Mm-hmm.
I feel like I haven't seen
eveningwear from you.
I'll show you if I can stay.
Well, let's hope
that you're staying.
You have to be versatile.
You can't just be a one-trick pony.
I haven't done an evening,
I don't think ever,
because I do cater to a younger bracket.
Yeah, but I think today, the kids that I see
when I go to concerts,
they will tend to wear an evening top
with a pair of jeans.
It's just all mixed up.
But you need to have it in there.
- Okay.
- That's good advice.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Ji
You're making the cut.
I really thought I was going home.
Rinat, we're gonna talk to you.
- Hello.
- How's it going?
Please tell us about your collection.
So, I'm standing at the temple,
and I said to myself,
"Why not I do a contrast
between Judaism and Buddhism?
And as you know, I'm Jewish, I'm Israeli.
And then I told myself, "Let me take elements
from the Hasidic Jew's outfit."
So, I went to blue from the sky,
and then I had hints of menswear pinstripe.
And then, for the Buddhist look,
I wanted to be more flowy and loose,
inspired by the Sun.
And how do these looks represent your brand?
So, I'm a very spiritual person,
and I work out of my emotion.
I'm also very inspired by the different
emotions I'm going through in life,
or just different events in life.
I'm very eclectic,
so the inspiration will change.
Mm, can't say I loved it.
We're still getting to know you,
but I think what is tough is that I feel like
we've gotten to know your competitors
really well over the same course of time.
Okay, I appreciate your thought. Thank you.
I liked your first outfit.
I liked the ease with it.
When it got closer, I loved the fabrics
that you chose.
I have a little bit of an issue
with the second look.
It's not going to flatter most women.
I didn't particularly think
that any of the pieces are very flattering,
for women or for men.
I like the fabric only.
I'm not into the design of it.
So, which one do you think would be
your sellable look?
- Yeah.
- The first look.
- The first is more sellable.
- Really?
It also it did not look like
it all belongs together.
I didn't love the fabric.
I didn't love the not there or the jacket.
- Hey, well, to each his
- I don't know, the whole combo for me
- was not
- Well, to each their own.
- Totally. That's why
- I appreciate the fabric.
Rinat, based on what you showed us today
you're not making the cut.
- Okay.
- How would you change our mind?
Um
basically that, you know, like you said,
you guys just started to get to know me,
and I do have a lot of layers,
and, you know, I do have guards up.
What type of guards?
Just, you know, things from the past.
Is that your personal life?
I'm not digging, but
No, just, you know, just like letting it out
and really, like, showing
Yeah, but
well, if you're not letting it out here
No, I am letting it out here.
I'm completely letting it out here.
What is your strength that will convince us
four people sitting here
to say, "Okay, we change our mind"?
Listen, I want to continue here.
Like, I don't see myself doing anything else.
- Rinat
- I don't want her to go. I'm not gonna lie.
I don't. I don't want her to go.
I believe in her. I believe that
she can do it and change our minds,
and she has one more chance.
Have any of you changed your mind?
Chiara?
No.
- Joseph?
- No.
I did not change my mind.
How am I going to argue
and fight all three of you?
The majority remains the same.
Rinat, I'm sorry,
but you're not making the cut.
Thank you so much
for this amazing opportunity.
- My life is going to continue after this.
- Of course it's going to continue.
- Thank you.
- I'm really sorry.
Bye, Gemini.
- Thank you so much, Naomi. I appreciate it.
- You're welcome.
It's not the end of the world.
This experience was a huge validation
that I'm a talented designer.
See you later.
I'm gonna go home and regroup
and, you know,
keep pushing myself, keep pushing my brand.
The world's definitely gonna know
about me and my brand.
- Bye. Thank you.
- Bye, Rinat!
I was, like, super excited
that I won this challenge.
At the same time,
a piece of my heart left today.
Next time, on Making the Cut
We want you to create two looks
for a digital marketing company.
Turn a bit towards us.
It's really too small.
I don't have the time
to remake this.
To be honest,
I don't know what I'm gonna do.
Let's hope coffee saves this dress.
You have a clear vision
of who you are.
I love the dress.
You really captured
what your brand is about.
- It was too ordinary.
- I wanted to see more from you today.
It was nothing new.

# Inside the world of
Beautiful people #
Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo.
- Hey.
- Mornin'.
- How's it goin'?
- Ooof.
Good enough.
We're down to the wire.
I was just thinking last night,
"Oh my God, it's six of us."
- That's not a lot.
- Half is gone.
That's crazy.
- How does it feel to sleep like a winner?
- It feels good.
I'm still digesting this whole fact that,
like, you know, I won last night.
I feel like somebody needs to, like,
slap me in the face,
- like, "This is what happened last night."
- Come here, I'll slap you in the face.
Wait, after I do my hair.
But I think it's good
that you have this win.
I mean, it was also about time.
You've been turning out these looks,
and they'll like say if it's great,
but, then, boom!
- You want to win, you know what I mean?
- Yeah.
You're not here to, like, sit in the corner.
- We both came here to win.
- Yeah, but I already have a win.
You do have a win.
Oh, here they are.
Hey, guys! Over here!
This is beautiful.
Konichiwa.
Konichiwa.
- Hello, designers.
- Hi.
Heidi and I want to welcome you
to Sensoji Temple.
- This is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.
- -Wow.
Tokyo is such a dichotomy
of the old and the new.
- Di Tell me one more time.
- Dichotomy.
- Say the word again?
- Dichotomy.
It means opposing
or contradictory forces.
Kind of like the ying and the yang?
- Yeah, you know. Kind of like us.
- Like us?
We're kind of opposing and contradictory,
yet we get along so harmoniously.
Yes, we do.
Well, Tokyo has a lot of ancient elements
and traditions,
yet it is also a very modern city.
- It's a leading force in technology.
- Mm-hmm.
So, for your next collection,
we want you to create two looks
that represent the concept
of opposing forces.
Whatever your creative interpretation
of opposing forces may be.
Past versus present.
Feminine versus masculine.
Good versus evil.
It's completely up to you.
Mm, I love that.
Mm, I see the eyeballs. I see
the little hamster already on its wheel.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
And as a reminder, at least one of your looks
must be accessible. Sander
I mean, it was amazing what you did,
- but
- -Not accessible.
They put like this bullet on my head,
and I kind of really don't want to do it,
like I think it should be a choice.
Like, Esther can choose to do color;
I can choose to be accessible, you know?
So, we're beginning this assignment here at
one of the oldest buildings here in Tokyo.
But for your fashion showcase,
we're going full ultra-modern.
Okay? And digital.
- Yes.
- Ooh.
Your fashion show will be an immersive,
digital fashion showcase.
This is going to be projected
onto the staircase
in our very own Amazon Fashion studio.
Yes! Yes, yes, yes.
And you will choose from a series of themes.
It's first-come, first-served.
I am so into this.
Like, this is the future of fashion.
This is the future of media and art.
This is my jam.
Your fashion show will be tomorrow night.
We're close to the end,
so let's get with it, people.
And I'll be checking on you
in the morning.
It's not possible.
And don't forget, the winning look
will be sold immediately on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
Who is ready to win?
Ji?
- So, good luck to all of you.
- Thank you.
I can't wait to see who's gonna win this one.
I know.
# I know I play with fire #
# I know the fire can burn #
# I keep lighting the matches
from matchbooks #
# Breathing you in, you got me hooked #
# I guess there's no lessons learned #
We have to choose
a digital background,
and my theme, it's the graphic one
with all the black and white lines,
and it's bold, and it's perfect
for this assignment.
Oh, look, it's so cool.
Let me see yours?
Play yours, let's see what it looks like?
- It is the inside of a
- A computer.
I got the nature.
I have a theme behind it.
The proportions, you know, this huge thing
- I know.
- That big one.
Oh, my God. It's so cool.
We're at a Buddhist temple.
It has hit me to do a contrast
between Judaism and Buddhism.
Basically, I'm taking two different religions
that are completely separate
and mixing those two.
My digital backdrop is an underwater world.
Water is very soft, and it's very floaty.
So, at the moment,
I'm thinking of something very rigid.
And I really love the temple
and the golden thing
on top of this temple here,
which has all these golden rings.
It will be contrasted in this water world.
What is it supposed to do?
A lot of thoughts are coming over me.
I was raised in a super Catholic family.
# And you say I'm a demon #
with really loving, supporting parents.
But at an early age, I realized I was gay,
raised in a Catholic family,
and that was when I first started wearing,
like, all black.
It was representing, like,
the deep depression I didn't realize I had.
It took years and years to crawl out of that.
Now, I'm a totally well-adjusted adult.
I have a loving family.
I'm proud to be gay.
But I also have this religious past.
It's beautiful.
The opposing forces
I'm thinking about right now
is that, me, as this loud, freaky, gay man,
coming from a religious base,
there's an opposition there
that will never meet up.
But I play with that tension in my work.
I play with it in my life.
It's always inspired me.
But it's complicated.
It's really complicated.
###
# I'm letting go to all I know #
I got really inspired at the temple,
so, I wanted to make a dress
which is inspired, actually, by this thing.
So, it will have a lot of rings,
and I think I will even do it in gold.
I'm pushing myself to go a bit
out of my boundaries here
- Four meters.
- Correct.
but the accessible look
will be done again in black.
Thank you! Arigato!
Let me see this again.
Look, it's a front panel of a shirt,
back panel of a shirt,
and then it's like draped sleeves.
Well, my inspiration is exactly
what they want for the challenge.
They want, like, cheap t-shirts
- There's no structured sleeve?
- No.
and, like, garbage.
And I'm gonna just Ugh.
I'm not with it. Stupid.
Hi. Can I do six?
I'm taking the elements
of the Hasidic Jewish outfit
you know, it's like the black suit
but I'm not using black. I'm taking a risk.
So, I bought two different shades of blue,
and then for the Buddhist look,
it will be very flowy
and, you know, very zen.
It will be the colors of the sun.
Arigato.
###
What's your vibe?
So, I have, like, the graphic,
abstract background
Yeah.
And my entire brand's about, like, cultures,
so, I'm gonna do, like,
- two opposing cultures.
- Oh, nice.
Yeah, I did this fortune,
and it says
my request will be granted, so
I'm requesting I win!
Yeah. And it also says I'm gonna get
a sugar daddy, so
I hope that comes true.
I wonder what Sander's gonna do
for his accessible.
I don't care.
Here it is.
These are all too for me.
I heard him
gruntin' and fussin', and,
like, "I'm gonna make an accessible look,"
but I don't think he gets it.
In order to be a good designer, you have
to merge creativity and accessibility.
Thank you so much.
Hi. Um One meter?
The duality is basically
between creative and consumerism.
That's where I'm doing t-shirts.
Basically, that is, like,
the consumption part,
'cause that's the only thing
that would actually sell.
And then I'm reusing them in kind of my way,
you know, in a consumer kind of way.
Boom! And then, next shot,
on the plane to Belgium.
Hi, guys. So, I'm at the Robot Restaurant,
which is one of the biggest
tourist attractions here in Tokyo,
and I thought I'd ask Chiara
to come and join me.
###
I want to go in the fish.
Hi!
Ooh!
Woo hoo!
Very Tokyo.
And, you know what?
I asked them if we could join them.
- Oh, my God. So, we're going?
- Yes.
It's so crazy.
Fasten your seatbelt.
This is gonna be a bumpy ride.
So, we're good versus evil.
GOOD!
EVIL!
"Dichotomy." I learned that word today.
Hmm-hmm.
Are you ready?
Ahh!
Yes!
Good is the winner.
###
- Hey.
- Hi.
Yeehaw!
And the meds begin.
I'm using, like, old-school houndstooth.
Like, it's one of the most classic
textile patterns ever.
And I have this idea of darkness and light.
using old-timey tapestries with, like,
new-timey PVC and some leather.
It's like fused together.
I think it's gonna look really cool.
Whoa.
I am creating these, like, 3D lettering.
It's my name in Korean,
in, like, really big font.
It's definitely not accessible,
but I feel like I need to do something
that's, like, more fun for me,
and something that's new, so
That's what I'm doing.
I've never gotten a bad critique,
but it's like not enough for me
to be, like, in the middle.
Like, I'm not here to be okay.
Like, I'm not here to be "good."
I just want to do the best work
I've done in my whole life,
and it's really frustrating.
I want to say, "Hey, I'm here!
I'm still here!" Like "Do you see me?"
Wow!
This is a game-changer, you know?
This is a game-changer.
- But I'm just
- Hey, it's the perfect color for you.
If Esther sends another collection
of all black,
they are going to just feed her
to the wolves.
I'm excited to use a little bit of color.
I mean, if you look at me, it's not
only black. You see something else.
So, I'm using the other things.
So, I will have one black outfit
and one gold outfit.
This is horrible.
I'm just not feeling it.
I don't want to make it wearable.
but I'm at the point
that I'm pissed enough about it
that I'm just like, "I'm just gonna do it."
But I'm going to do it my way.
I feel like everyone's
kind of pushing themselves to show range.
We're all kind of taking that chance.
- It's kind of chic, right?
- Yeah.
Ah hah.
- You're doing all white?
- Mm-hmm.
With silver.
That's cool.
My backdrop is space.
So, I'm going to keep the looks very clean,
but it's going to have
like a futuristic vibe to it.
So I'm really excited.
I just have to make sure
it doesn't get too costumey.
What you do is, literally, it's art.
- Like, you don't want to cheapen that.
- No.
And I feel like now with the designs,
I'm doing something that's almost like
I'm making a mockery out of my own misery
with that whole discussion of wearability
Right.
We're here to create new things.
We're here to make brands that fill the gaps
of what's missing in the fashion world.
They say all the time,
"Break the noise, break the noise,"
until you break the noise, and they're like,
"But it's not sellable."
I want to make my stance
very clear to them,
that my brand is streetwear
mixed with couture, you know?
It is something that, yes,
you might not wear it today on the street,
but I'm also designing for the future.
Yellow? Fun. What are you making?
- I'm making a jacket.
- Like, structured?
- Um, no.
- Baggy?
- I'm doing me.
- You're doing you.
After winning last night, it just
gave me confidence to keep pushing myself.
And it felt really good using color
yesterday, so I'm taking another risk,
and taking a risk kind of feels good,
you know?
It's like walking on, like,
the wild side a little bit.
- Everybody got color this time.
- Yeah. Even Esther's doing color.
When she came out with that,
I was like, "Whoa-ho-ho!"
I actually feel a bit insecure
leaving my comfort zone,
deciding to go into color.
It was like, "Oh, why am I doing it?"
But what I like about this material
is the fluorescent edges when you cut it.
When I saw this fabric,
it reminded me right away
to all the colorful fishes
in the backdrop.
It's going to be wild.
- Looks really dope.
- Thank you.
We'll see what they think about it,
you know what I mean?
But these are also pockets.
So, it can go from unwearable to
wearable.
A normal skirt. Normal.
- I like that.
- Do you see that this makes a t-shirt?
- Like, a little shirt?
- Oh!
Everything has a look of a t-shirt in there.
So, I took a theme that was, like,
a really sellable piece of garment,
and then I want to show how I do it,
like, you know
'cause that's my duality
between consumerism and creativity.
I love it. It's almost making fun
of the judges, in a way.
I'm gonna have to try to keep
my cool when I talk to them.
I don't think I have to prove a point
to the judges.
I have to put my foot down to the judges.
###
Ooh, wow, I love that fabric, Megan.
- The silver is so cool.
- It doesn't look cheeseball?
I don't think it looks cheap.
I just don't want it to look like
Starship Enterprise.
It could be really, really good,
or really, really bad.
# I feel it goin' down
Down, down, down #
# Somehow, there's tension all around #
Uhh. I feel like
I've been slicing pizza for, like, two hours.
Are you good for the seamstress?
I hope so.
You're not eating?
Um, I'm gonna finish fusing this first
and light candles,
and then I'm gonna go eat.
Shabbat Shalom.
Well, I do need my Shabbat today,
'cause bitch knows I need a prayer.
- Are you stressing?
- Ahhh!
Imagine:
Next episode, Sander becomes Jewish,
on Making the Cut.
Anybody that wants to join,
you're more than welcome.
- I'll Shabbat.
- Let's go Shabbat.
Today's Shabbat,
by lighting the candles,
you're blessing the Sabbath
and showing gratitude.
Shabbat.
Shabbat Shalom.
- Okay, can I do my prayer?
- Okay.
- Can I do mine at the same time?
Yeah.
I wished for a lot of food. Amen.
I'm not Jewish,
but I think I could also use
all the blessings in the world,
so, everything's welcome at this point.
- You're good.
-Shabbat Shalom.
- I feel better. Thank you.
- Shabbat Shalom.
I'm feeling really stressed.
so, it's helpful stepping
outside of this crazy group
and do something just for myself.
# Hold me underwater #
# Hold me underwater 'til I drown #
I always try to stay true to myself,
but at the same time,
it's just the six of us left.
You cannot allow yourself to make a mistake.
# There's one last prayer
before the light fades out #
We all could have good days or bad days.
And then it's over.
# And we drown #
# Go on, do your thing, do your thing
Do it #
Ohio!
This week's assignment
is to create a two-look collection
representing the concept of opposing forces.
Love.
My two opposing forces
are the old and the new.
My duality is consumerism and art.
Yes!
I'm juxtaposing darkness and light.
# You're a superstar #
Our fashion show will be
an immersive, digital fashion showcase.
I think it's gonna look really cool.
I'm really excited to see it.
# Show 'em who's in charge #
# Superstar #
Ooh.
Oh, I love the seamstress. Thank you, Lord.
Yeah, it's been really tough.
I'm just really struggling
with my accessible look.
I want Tim here,
so, I can, like, talk it out with him.
I'm a bit relieved.
She got done with two garments.
I just forgot to put the pattern
for the collar on the top. But it's okay.
I can do it.
I've been pushing my boundaries and working
with fabrics that I don't normally work with.
I'm just really proving to myself
that I can do anything.
So, now I'm creating
the same pants as the top,
and then we'll go see how this day's
gonna turn out for all of us.
- For me, at least.
- I don't really give a about
Sorry, Dad.
Pow, pow, pow!
- Good morning, everyone.
- Good morning!
- It's very quiet in here.
- Oh, yeah.
- I'm eager to weigh in on what you're doing.
- Good morning.
Good morning, Sander.
So, for my duality, I chose creativity
and product, and consumption.
You know, accessibility
and the creative part.
So, I took the idea of a t-shirt
and the idea of a pants,
so they're accessible,
and then re-use them into other pieces,
like the top is gonna be a pants,
this is a pants,
but they're all cut and then another garment.
This is also that you see here
is a t-shirt, and a skirt,
- which becomes pockets
- Oh.
- so that you have, again
- Interesting.
the wearable aspect of it.
First t-shirt I've ever made.
- Well, you can see it's a Sander t-shirt.
- Yeah, of course.
- I believe.
-That's all I need to hear. "I get it."
'Cause I think most of the time
with the fashion that I make,
the worst thing is that people don't get it.
We'll see how it's gonna go down
with the judges.
I don't believe that
that's gonna go good, but we'll see.
Good heavens.
You have a color.
I don't know how to react.
And I was thinking a lot
about this question of how to put the black
in a more appealing way online maybe.
And consequently expand your customer base.
- Exactly.
- Yeah.
So, I thought if I bring in color,
then it should be a show-stopper
and maybe something really over-over.
So, I have a dress with stripes of the gold
and the fluorescent,
so it will really glow in the light.
And then I translated the same thing
into a wearable look.
It's a skirt with just one stripe in it.
- This departure for you
- This time I wanted
- I'm a fan.
- You are? Okay.
You know, I went to the temple yesterday.
So, I've decided to do contrasts
between the two religions.
- So, you know, Judaism and Buddhism.
- Mm-hmm.
So, I'm thinking about
the Hasidic Jew's outfit, but for a woman.
- Uh-huh.
- So, I decided to go with these blues,
number one, 'cause the sky,
I have the nature.
Then, it goes with this skirt.
'Cause, you know, the Hasidic women
wear long skirts.
- Yes.
- But then it has touches of menswear pants.
Okay.
We'll come back to this.
What else are you doing?
So, my twist on the Buddhist robe,
I decided to go with yellow as the Sun.
Mm-hmm.
So, kind of to give it that, still, like,
that kimono-ish vibe,
more loose versus
something more constructed.
Yeah. No, I get it.
I am feeling very positively the whole vibe
of the Buddhist-inspired look.
Yeah.
I am not feeling this Hasidic piece.
- It feels very uptight and constrained.
- Mm-hmm.
And that skirt and this knot it just looks
like a terrible dry-cleaning accident.
- I'm being I'm a blunt instrument
- No, no.
- because I care about you
- Yeah, I know.
- and you're incredibly talented.
- I appreciate it. Thank you.
It just doesn't feel right.
Well, Megan, this is you.
- I can tell.
- Ah! Good.
- My opposing ideas are the old with the new.
- Okay.
And taking traditional silhouettes
and interpreting them in a new way.
I was gonna make kind of an overlay
over this.
Will it be treated like an accessory?
It will be detachable?
I wanted to make it as a belt.
I have a positive response
to the punch that it brings
Yeah!
- My inspiration is darkness and light.
- Okay.
I definitely design in a dark color palette,
but it's not a sad, somber thing.
I really do feel like
you have to go through the dark
to really appreciate the light.
That's why the black and white,
the interlocking houndstooth.
My showpiece is this big coat
with this huge hood.
And then I have a boy who has
this oversized hoodie.
It's gonna have some, like, drawstrings.
It's gonna be a little more streetwear-y.
I'm intrigued.
I drew inspiration from very traditional,
like, Korean clothing
Based on the hanbok?
Yes, the shapes.
- Just modernized it, like very contemporary.
- -Good.
So, this is a sketch,
and it's going to have the lettering
- It's actually my name in Korean.
- Okay.
- It's gonna be, like, all across here.
- Okay.
And my accessible look is a wrap dress.
- So, it's a dress version of a robe.
- Exactly.
And it's going to have
light graphic lettering across here,
and it's just like
an asymmetrical, pleated
- Oh, it's asymmetrical too?
- Mm-hmm.
And the scale of the pleats is different?
- And the blue and the white?
- Yeah.
You have a lot going on.
I understand what you're doing here
with the robe,
but if you're thinking about accessibility,
in its current form, the dress
is very costumey.
I'm pretty overwhelmed,
to be honest.
Sorry. I don't know why I'm getting,
like, emotional.
Like, I've been having, like,
an emotional day.
And I've been, like, holding everything in
and haven't, like, shed a tear today.
Your brain's working in overload.
Just use your instincts more.
Alright, everyone.
You have a lot of work to do this afternoon.
Fortunately, we do not have to travel
for our fashion show.
It's right here, on the staircase
of our very own Amazon fashion studio.
So, keep working hard, and don't overthink.
I'll see you later.
- Thank you, Tim. Bye.
- Bye.
I think that was like
the worst Tim talk I've ever had.
My accessible look,
like, really, really needs work,
and we have very little time left,
so, I'm just like
"What am I doing?"
Like, I really do like my first look.
And I'm doing what I want to do,
so that's good,
but my accessible look also has to be,
like, equally good,
and right now, like, I don't even want that.
So I'm just like
need to take a breather.
# Dream on #
# In my mind I feel you flying, you belong #
# Keep on moving to the music
Dream on #
Alright, I'm actually getting excited now.
- I do not yet have excitement, but
- It will come.
I am hopeful.
I'm working on my big coat,
which is complicated.
I feel super over my head
at the moment.
# Come to another
Dream on #
- New skirt.
- You have to do it again?
I'm doing something brand-new.
I wasn't sure about the skirt.
It's too shiny and too blue,
and I needed something to tone it down.
So, I guess he was right. It was too much.
Right now, it just feels nerve-wracking.
God willing, I got this.
I'm not going home.
Oh, my God.
I'm stressed, I'm nervous.
Especially because this assignment is
a bit terrifying for me.
I'm dying with this thing here.
I wanted to go out of my comfort zone.
Ahh, quite ambitious here, my project.
And as I have the underwater world,
it's a bit like Esther's
pushed into the cold water,
and as her jewelry is so heavy,
she just drowns, drowns, drowns,
and then when she hits the ground,
she opens her eyes,
and there she sees this golden goddess
who's saying, like,
"Esther, don't be afraid. Everything you want
is on the other side of here."
I feel like it's time to stop
holding myself back,
which I think I did all my life.
It's the way I was educated, I grew up,
to always make myself smaller
and give the space to other people.
And I'm so fed up with holding back
my creativity
to really explore and go wild.
It seems like it's the time to
to open up now
and don't be afraid.
It's a very personal journey I'm doing here.
And leaving leaving a very important part
of your life behind,
it's like something you were holding
so intensely,
and then you just open up,
and saying goodbye is always
something emotional.
Hi!
How's it going, man?
Hi! Come.
# Let me spell this out #
Okay, let's go try on clothes.
# Ring my bell #
It needs a bit of work still, but
Can you turn around?
Ooh, wow. I like it.
Okay. You look incredible.
It's gonna look better.
Arigato.
# Let me spell this out #
Oh!
I definitely need some more time
to be less stressed.
Yours is not at all done.
Ooh. Esther, I love the colors.
So cool.
Thank you.
I've never heard you sew so fast, Esther.
Ah, this is the fight of my life here.
- It's so much better than that other shit.
- Very office slut.
I would wear it to the office
if I, like, had a crush on someone.
I do feel confident with my looks.
I believe in all the thought
that goes into it and the meaning of it.
But, you know, you can't help be nervous.
We're top six and soon top five.
- How you doing, JiJi?
- Okay.
I have, like, so many demons in my brain.
I just need to, like, chill the out.
# It's going down tonight #
# Yeah #
# We're going to bring it to the top
'til it's won #
So, I want to keep it very natural, organic.
Yeah, I like that.
# No stopping us #
Okay. Turn around.
# No stopping us #
# Yo #
Esther, a whole new world.
- I love the shoes with it.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
- That's what I'm just trying
Okay. It fits.
Love this.
Like, cool girls would buy this.
In my outfits, I definitely see
my DNA still in there.
But it's like a softer DNA.
I'm doing me this assignment,
but in an accessible way.
- # It's going down tonight #
-We'll see.
Cool.
Whoo! Hello, everybody.
Hello, hello, hello, everybody.
Welcome to our fashion show.
As many of you know,
Japan and Japanese culture
embody the old and the new in a way
that's very unique and special.
And, actually, that's exactly
what our fashion show is about.
Each designer created a two-look collection
embracing opposing forces.
And they can also choose
an immersive digital backdrop.
I could use some fresh air.
You guys?
Ah.
One of the winner's looks will be available
immediately in the Making the Cut store.
It is our honor to introduce
our esteemed judges.
We have creative director of Altuzarra,
Joseph Altuzarra.
Digital entrepreneur
and very powerful fashion influencer
Chiara Ferragni.
Supermodel and fashion icon Naomi Campbell.
Ooh, and we also have a very special guest
in the front row tonight.
Digital influencer, a true fashionista
and social activist,
the cutest virtual character out there,
Noonoouri.
- How fun.
- Hi.
Noonoouri will be featuring the winning look
on her social media pages.
- How exciting is that?
- Wow.
- I think it's time to turn up the volume.
- Yes. Let's do it!
- Alright.
- Enjoy the show, everybody.
###
Great way to start the show.
I like it.
It looks very samurai-inspired.
Love it.
# If there is a fire and we do not have
the water to put it out #
Oh, beautiful.
Beautiful, beautiful.
- I like that one.
- You like that one?
I think the two together is great.
- Yes.
- It's like a houndstooth and a plaid.
- This is a really nice proportion.
- Yeah. Nice details.
I do like that he's evolving
his leather language into something else,
because this feels new for him.
# Fire #
Ooh.
###
I like this, actually.
I love this one.
Your hanbok has appeal from a distance.
It's very, very strong.
- Do you think it's too simple?
- No.
I like the blue and the white.
Yeah, I like the colors she chose.
- I don't like that dress.
- I don't think it's very flattering.
- This fabric doesn't look lux.
- I don't like.
No?
Her first look, I think,
was much stronger.
Oh, my God, that skirt is short
in the back.
- I saw a lot that I didn't want to see.
- Very short.
- Beautiful.
- Wow.
I'm really nervous this one.
- Well, everyone should be.
- Yeah.
###
I don't know. It looks a little bit
like hand-me-downs.
From here, it doesn't look like
such a special kind of outfit, you know?
- I like it.
- You like it?
I do like that there is
this kind of sportiness.
But let's be real.
Who would want to buy that?
Oh, no, no, no. I don't like this.
I don't like at all.
I really don't like the shiny fabric.
It seems a little cheap to me.
Me too.
I expected more from her, for sure.
This looks messy.
It's not as strong as what she showed
last week, no?
No, I'm a little surprised.
The previous looks
that she won on
felt so different from this.
My bigger question about Rinat is just, like,
what her brand is about.
- This is beautiful.
- It is so gorgeous.
###
That's kind of cool.
Looks very couture-esque.
- Love it! It looks so good!
- And you should. It does. It looks great.
- It's a big effect, but it doesn't
- Yeah.
And it does like a bigger effect, I feel,
from far away.
When you go closer, it's not as special.
- I think this is her brand.
- I would buy that too.
Yeah.
She stepped up.
She stepped up.
- Would you wear that?
- Mm-hmm.
- It's very nice.
- I love the fabric.
And doing a suit
in white like this is not easy.
I think this would sell also.
I can't wait to see
what Sander did.
Cool.
###
- I love this color combination.
- I like the whole outfit.
I actually think that shape of the top
is really nice.
- I would buy that.
- Yeah.
- I think it's very sellable.
- Yeah.
- It's good.
- Very nice.
This is, for me, more modern than Jonny.
Yeah, it's very modern.
There's actually a new Sander.
A Sander that the judges haven't seen.
- It's very elegant. Very lux.
- I like it a lot.
I would wear it.
I like the naked back.
- Great work.
- Thank you.
How are you feeling?
- Yeah.
- I'm nervous.
- That's nice!
- I think it's gorge.
The sheen of the plastic at the belt.
I'm not sure about the PVC on the legs.
This one is really not my thing.
It looks very costume-y.
The black, I think, is cool.
And at least she tried with color.
Yeah. She followed our advice.
It's so beautiful with the background.
- Yeah.
- Wow.
So, you like it.
Of course I like it. It's now.
It's what the kids want.
It's what they're wearing.
You all should feel
extremely, extremely proud. Yeah.
Thank you very much for coming
to our fashion show.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Bye, everybody.
- Hi there.
- Hi!
Hi, guys.
Going into this elimination,
I'm not confident.
How much fun was this today?
I'm nervous that I could be going home.
- Hi, everybody.
- Hi!
Designers, that was
a really fun fashion show.
Are you happy with yourselves?
- Definitely.
- Definitely.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that we see
walk down the runway.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
We discussed each
of your two-look collections,
and we have made some decisions.
But they're not necessarily final.
And as you know, a conversation
can change everything.
Jonny and Rinat, you know that.
Oh, yeah.
Alrighty. Jonny, we want to talk to you.
- Hi, guys.
- Hi there.
- Hey.
- Tell us about your collection.
Obviously, I love a dark palette.
But it only exists in contrast to light.
So, my showpiece was a big jacket
with a huge hood.
- But it's nice that it's fitted.
- Mm-hmm.
It fits the torso beautifully.
And then I kind of made
those thigh-high leather
- Stirrups.
- Which worked.
- It was very creative. I was into it.
- Thank you.
It was elegant and chic.
I feel like you could sell all of it.
You know, I love the drop crotch.
I feel like you were very spot-on
on both looks.
- Great, thank you.
- I loved it.
- I appreciate it.
- Well done.
I like the man's more, I think.
When I saw it, I thought it was like
a modern, contemporary samurai.
There's such an interesting kind of softening
of your vocabulary.
And I think it's actually bringing
such a unique perspective
on this very, like, rock-and-roll world
that you've created.
- That is so key for your brand.
- Yeah.
And I think you could really
build into something far greater.
Thank you.
Esther. Tell us about your collection.
Okay. Well, I have been thinking a lot
after our last conversation.
I was thinking a lot about my business.
Black will stay the center of my collection.
I was rather thinking of, how can I go a bit
out of this very matte, dark black,
but integrating something
which is maybe sheer, transparent,
maybe including other fabrics.
So that if I imagine my collection online,
it's not only like just one black wall.
My first idea was the opposition,
having, like, light and shadow.
This gold dress,
it looks a bit like a jellyfish.
It's also, like, tradition
and new technologies with the PVC
and the edges, which are fluorescent.
Also, very colorful sneakers.
And then I actually translated the same thing
into a wearable look.
I was very excited to see you try
something so different
and not only did you do color,
but you did metallics.
I don't know that I would encourage you
to keep on doing metallics with PVC
in your collection,
just because it didn't feel
as authentic to me.
- Yeah.
- PVC's a very difficult material to use,
because when it's too much,
it can kind of look like a costume.
And so, I didn't love
the second outfit for that.
I love that you thought of what we said
to you the last time,
and I love how you solved the problem.
I loved the black dress.
I totally get it, how you kind of created
the transparency.
The gold one I'm not so in love with,
even though I was like, "Bring some color!"
But it was really just the density of not
just being like a black blob, so to speak.
- Yeah.
- So, I liked that.
I liked both your dresses.
Both your dresses I see on the runway now.
And I respect that you stick to who you are.
Yeah. At the end of the day, I actually think
that's what makes you a strong brand.
Thank you.
Hey, guys.
- Hey.
Sander, tell us about your collection.
So, for my duality, I chose something
that is very close to the brand.
I chose product, something that's consumable,
and that against art.
For my looks, I chose something that's
an icon of, like, product, consumption,
like a t-shirt and a pants.
So, I took the normal top,
then I made a cut in
as if there was, like, a t-shirt
inside of the t-shirt.
As you see with the cutout.
And then the skirt basically is cut
like a t-shirt and with the pockets out.
It's like a it creates the shape
of a t-shirt.
- But then to make it wearable again, I
- Ah! My lightbulb just went "ding!"
The same for the pants.
Like, you have normal pants,
and then it kind of doubles on top.
One thing I loved about your two looks,
they really go hand in hand.
And that is so important
during a fashion show,
to have a whole collection,
there is a whole theme.
- Thank you so much.
- I loved the skirt length. I loved the pants.
I would definitely want to wear it.
- I wanted to see more of your collection.
- Keep me.
I think you are a designer.
And I could definitely see you doing
your show in Paris.
Thank you so much.
- Yeah. Grabbed me.
- It means a lot to me.
You know, you have such a conceptual mind
and the question is always, like,
how do you jump from that to product?
You want to make that jump
as organically as possible,
so that commercial isn't becoming
the enemy of artistic.
That, actually, both things can come together
and create something that
People can actually wear.
And that actually is so powerful,
and these looks were really that.
You know, you're very young,
but the way that you think,
I actually think is always very consistent
and always very on-brand for you.
I love that you are full of art,
and you come up with new things.
You re-invented a t-shirt,
and you made it look chic.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Sander
Yes.
You are the winner today.
So, your skirt and your re-imagined t-shirt
will be immediately available on Amazon.
- Ahhh!
- And I have one more surprise for you.
Noonoouri is going to post your winning look
on her social media.
Yay!
Thank you. I love you all.
I was so upset
because of the constant reminder
that it needs to be accessible,
but I get it.
And I'm going to keep pushing myself
to find a middle ground
and find where we do meet and where we can
build up a new generation of fashion.
'Cause at the end of the day,
we're not just designers. We're also brands.
Ji, come talk to us, please.
Hi, guys. It's been a while.
I thought you forgot about me.
No, no, no.
So, please tell us about your collection.
So, I thought this challenge
was really perfect for me,
because working with different dualities
is entirely about my brand,
and I really wanted to bring in
what I know best,
which is my traditional Korean heritage
and the modern Western world,
and merge them together.
And the lettering on the front
is actually my name in Korean.
I really love my first look,
because I think it conceptualizes
everything I want it to say through clothing.
And I wanted the second look to be
the accessible version of that look.
- So, the dress is your commercial look?
- Yes, the second.
- I love your first look.
- Thank you.
- It was raised, your name.
- Yes, it was 3D.
So, it's kind of like the puffer
and I loved the whole traditional, authentic,
basing it on your culture.
The second look for me
was not special.
I wish that the second look would have been
a more feminine version of the first look.
I think it was a little too short.
I could see the booty of the girl.
Didn't love the fabric.
Didn't love the white stitching
on some places,
then the skirt just looked
like it was chopped off on the bottom.
I do like that we saw different silhouettes
from you,
because I feel like it's kind of been
a little bit repetitive to this point.
But I can't say I personally love them
very much.
Okay.
I don't feel that there's been
anything very feminine from you.
- It's been kind of very masculine.
- Mm-hmm.
I feel like I haven't seen
eveningwear from you.
I'll show you if I can stay.
Well, let's hope
that you're staying.
You have to be versatile.
You can't just be a one-trick pony.
I haven't done an evening,
I don't think ever,
because I do cater to a younger bracket.
Yeah, but I think today, the kids that I see
when I go to concerts,
they will tend to wear an evening top
with a pair of jeans.
It's just all mixed up.
But you need to have it in there.
- Okay.
- That's good advice.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Ji
You're making the cut.
I really thought I was going home.
Rinat, we're gonna talk to you.
- Hello.
- How's it going?
Please tell us about your collection.
So, I'm standing at the temple,
and I said to myself,
"Why not I do a contrast
between Judaism and Buddhism?
And as you know, I'm Jewish, I'm Israeli.
And then I told myself, "Let me take elements
from the Hasidic Jew's outfit."
So, I went to blue from the sky,
and then I had hints of menswear pinstripe.
And then, for the Buddhist look,
I wanted to be more flowy and loose,
inspired by the Sun.
And how do these looks represent your brand?
So, I'm a very spiritual person,
and I work out of my emotion.
I'm also very inspired by the different
emotions I'm going through in life,
or just different events in life.
I'm very eclectic,
so the inspiration will change.
Mm, can't say I loved it.
We're still getting to know you,
but I think what is tough is that I feel like
we've gotten to know your competitors
really well over the same course of time.
Okay, I appreciate your thought. Thank you.
I liked your first outfit.
I liked the ease with it.
When it got closer, I loved the fabrics
that you chose.
I have a little bit of an issue
with the second look.
It's not going to flatter most women.
I didn't particularly think
that any of the pieces are very flattering,
for women or for men.
I like the fabric only.
I'm not into the design of it.
So, which one do you think would be
your sellable look?
- Yeah.
- The first look.
- The first is more sellable.
- Really?
It also it did not look like
it all belongs together.
I didn't love the fabric.
I didn't love the not there or the jacket.
- Hey, well, to each his
- I don't know, the whole combo for me
- was not
- Well, to each their own.
- Totally. That's why
- I appreciate the fabric.
Rinat, based on what you showed us today
you're not making the cut.
- Okay.
- How would you change our mind?
Um
basically that, you know, like you said,
you guys just started to get to know me,
and I do have a lot of layers,
and, you know, I do have guards up.
What type of guards?
Just, you know, things from the past.
Is that your personal life?
I'm not digging, but
No, just, you know, just like letting it out
and really, like, showing
Yeah, but
well, if you're not letting it out here
No, I am letting it out here.
I'm completely letting it out here.
What is your strength that will convince us
four people sitting here
to say, "Okay, we change our mind"?
Listen, I want to continue here.
Like, I don't see myself doing anything else.
- Rinat
- I don't want her to go. I'm not gonna lie.
I don't. I don't want her to go.
I believe in her. I believe that
she can do it and change our minds,
and she has one more chance.
Have any of you changed your mind?
Chiara?
No.
- Joseph?
- No.
I did not change my mind.
How am I going to argue
and fight all three of you?
The majority remains the same.
Rinat, I'm sorry,
but you're not making the cut.
Thank you so much
for this amazing opportunity.
- My life is going to continue after this.
- Of course it's going to continue.
- Thank you.
- I'm really sorry.
Bye, Gemini.
- Thank you so much, Naomi. I appreciate it.
- You're welcome.
It's not the end of the world.
This experience was a huge validation
that I'm a talented designer.
See you later.
I'm gonna go home and regroup
and, you know,
keep pushing myself, keep pushing my brand.
The world's definitely gonna know
about me and my brand.
- Bye. Thank you.
- Bye, Rinat!
I was, like, super excited
that I won this challenge.
At the same time,
a piece of my heart left today.
Next time, on Making the Cut
We want you to create two looks
for a digital marketing company.
Turn a bit towards us.
It's really too small.
I don't have the time
to remake this.
To be honest,
I don't know what I'm gonna do.
Let's hope coffee saves this dress.
You have a clear vision
of who you are.
I love the dress.
You really captured
what your brand is about.
- It was too ordinary.
- I wanted to see more from you today.
It was nothing new.
