Next in Fashion (2020) s01e06 Episode Script
Rock
Welcome back to Next in Fashion.
Today's challenge is pretty hardcore!
[feedback whines]
Rock. [imitates playing notes]
Yeah!
That seems about right. Here.
They'll never know.
- [laughing]
- Do I feel very rock and roll to you?
[theme music playing]
- [chattering]
- [laughing]
- Something like that.
- Yeah.
[Charles] So what's the challenge, guys?
- Don't talk to me.
- [laughing]
I've become so mean now.
I'm gonna be mean Minju.
- Mean-ju!
- Like this?
[laughs]
- Morning, everyone! Hi!
- Morning!
- Leather.
- Gather round. You know the drill.
Come hither!
- Whoa!
- Sorry!
We just saw way more
than we were planning on seeing.
I always wondered what was
under people's kilts, and now I know.
- It was like oranges in a fishnet.
- [laughing]
- A bag of onions.
- [laughing]
Good morning, you guys.
Welcome back to your home away from home.
Today's challenge is all about
Rock.
- Yes!
- [laughing]
[Alexa Chung] Yeah.
Angelo, you had an incredible reaction.
Are you excited?
Yeah! [laughing]
This is Angelo's challenge.
Most of the people compare me
to Kurt Cobain in fashion.
- Okay.
- Because I am sensitive,
but at the same time,
my approach is more aggressive.
Your approach is very aggressive.
I saw it as we walked into this room.
It's very, very aggressive.
[Angelo] When I was a teenager,
Kurt Cobain teach me a lot
because he say you don't need
to be perfect to be a superstar.
I start to create a rock band
to share this message.
I was a singer,
but I was not very talented.
[laughing]
I decided to be the Kurt Cobain
of fashion.
Tomorrow is our rock and roll runway,
where Alexa and I will judge your designs
with A-list stylist Elizabeth Stewart.
And we will be joined
by a very special guest judge.
I'm really jazzed about this one.
He's a designer who's always been able
to execute a vision that's equal parts
subversive and powerful.
He designs bold and rebellious stuff,
earning him a loyal following
amongst an A-list elite.
We will of course be welcoming
Christopher Kane.
- [gasping]
- Yeah.
[laughing]
[Angel] Sorry.
[Alexa]
Angel and Minju, you literally gasped.
- Are you a big fan of Christopher Kane?
- Yes, yes, yes.
I really, really love Christopher Kane.
He just makes lots of new technology
and new fabric manipulation.
- [laughs] He's definitely a rock star.
- Yeah.
[Tan France] Rock has influenced fashion
since the days of Elvis Presley.
And like all fashion, rock and roll style
is continuously evolving.
From ripped T-shirts and jeans
to leather jackets and patches and studs.
Rock and roll is not afraid
of experimentation,
and neither is fashion.
It's loud, crazy,
rebellious, rambunctious.
It's even a little bit dirty and grimy.
Just how I like it.
- [laughing]
- [Alexa] And for this challenge,
we would like to see designs
that really embrace that energy.
[Tan] You'll be working with one female
model and one male model.
You can put whoever you want
in whatever you want.
I really love this challenge,
there's so many different directions
that you could all take it in.
There's punk, grunge, alternative.
And there's not just music genres.
Rock is all about an attitude.
Yes.
So we only have one rule, and that is
There are no rules, man!
[laughing]
It's rock and roll.
Just show us something really unexpected.
We do not want you to feel limited
by any means,
so our closet has been given
a rock and roll makeover.
Ooh!
[Alexa] In there, you're gonna find
everything from the world of rock.
We're talking leather, grommets,
- studs, skulls.
- Wow!
Okay, kids,
let's turn those designs up to 11.
- [laughing]
- Your rock and roll challenge starts
now!
- Oh, my God.
- [Charles] Angelo, go.
[Angel] Oh, my God. Be careful, guys.
[Minju] Oh, no! Come on.
Hey, the red?
Because rock is something
that I don't know so much about,
I'm just, like, the fabric,
we need the right fabrics.
- As many as possible.
- [Angelo] Oh, my God.
- Do you need this?
- [laughs] No!
The first thing that I noticed
is some turquoise fur,
- and it's just out of Charles' reach.
- [grunts]
So maybe I'll actually have a chance
of getting it.
Damn it.
[laughing]
[Ashton] Marco, what are you thinking?
[Marco] For this particular challenge,
the first thing we're thinking is,
like, "Damn it!"
Since we have already done
a punk-inspired look
and a sort of grunge-inspired look,
the safest bet really is to do the glam.
What are you thinking?
David Bowie, Elton John?
Queen. Like, all this sort of, like,
big, bold, confident
Yeah. Something that we haven't
really touched upon is the catsuit.
In the past, the judges have said
that maybe our pieces
are too costume-y or extra.
But I also feel like,
I mean, what do you want us to do?
- Make something simple?
- [laughs]
- It's gonna be lame rock.
- It's not what we do.
[Daniel] Okay, I think glam is not us.
I mean, I'm drawn to grunge.
It's very versatile.
Yeah, I agree with you.
- Alexa!
- Yes.
- Rock and roll, my love.
- I know it's only rock and roll
- but I like it.
- Yeah!
In essence, what is rock and roll?
- It's about not playing by the rules.
- Yeah.
We're looking for designs
that are inspired by an attitude.
[Charles] The general silhouette,
this is the shape.
It needs to be more extreme.
Bit stronger.
- You are very elegant, Charles, sorry.
- Fine.
[laughing]
When you look out,
it's just like a sea of various fabrics.
It's kind of thrilling.
I think it's a fun one.
- Me too.
- Feels like there's, like
- There's energy in the room.
- Yeah.
I'm obviously immediately
thinking bondage,
'cause that's my experience,
'cause I, like, do fetish.
Everyone knows of a rock star
that they can reference.
Totally.
- Minju, what's rock mean to you?
- Hmm
I don't know.
Only thing I remember is this.
[screams]
Yeah.
For the female,
I think we should do almost this shape.
- Right? It'll be a dress.
- It will be amazing, baby.
This is gonna be gold, gold on gold.
[laughs] Yeah! I'm happy.
I pushed Charles.
"Please, free your mind!
And give the chance
for your baby to play the game."
So, in this challenge.
I will pull back for the first time,
and I'll let Angelo steer the direction.
If there's enough of this.
I'll check it out.
This is super amazing, in front and back.
You see the back? It's more amazing.
- The back is amazing. Use the back.
- [laughs]
Baby wants to play.
Can you imagine doing leather straps
and then add that on top of the garment?
They could be, like,
a collection of ticket stubs.
It could be that it's cascading
and it's something quite heavy and full.
[Carli] Yeah, I like that.
Rock is all about attitude.
And what I do in my work
is also about attitude and mood.
- Yeah, me too.
- The mood of yours is the same.
So hopefully we'll be able
to get behind this one.
For the man's look,
we have a navy blue wool top and bottom
with leather safety-pinned ticket stubs.
And for the woman,
I'm thinking an over-sized coat.
[Daniel] What are you thinking
in terms of fabric into that? Leather?
I mean, you know I'm all for the leather,
- 'cause I think it's really emo.
- Yeah.
It's inspired by myself,
back in the day.
A girl partying,
going out for, like, three weeks,
finding this coat on the sofa.
Puts on this coat,
obviously not hers 'cause it's huge.
Wow. This is a bit scary.
[laughs]
And the bodysuit foundation,
you think is gonna be
I think this is it right here.
Look. These three.
'Cause I'm gonna be bringing that in,
underneath this
[laughs] What are you going for?
I'm going for what we talked about,
Ashton.
Our plan is to create
a crop turquoise fur jacket
with a gold, iridescent,
patchwork catsuit.
And for the male model,
Ashton is gonna be making
a motorcycle jacket
and some gold lamé
high-waisted stretch pants.
Are you using any black anywhere?
I totally can.
I don't have any in right now.
All right.
I've worked with more color these past
few challenges than I have in years.
[laughs]
Not exactly what I feel comfortable with.
- I'm super excited about it.
- Shocking.
Glam, Ashton, glam.
- This time, I want very, very naughty.
- Naughty?
Last challenge,
we were in the bottom two,
because judges say our lingerie design
is not very sexy.
I think we should use some leather.
- You want to use leather?
- Like, something shiny.
So I think we need to prove
that we can do, you know, a sexy thing.
- I also love the check.
- The red one?
[Angel]
I think that one looks really sexy.
Yeah. It's kind of like
school uniform rock, you know.
Sexy, you know the mood?
- Really right on track as rock and roll.
- Yeah.
- Angel.
- Yes.
This is quite nice.
- 'Cause I want some shine.
- [laughs] Shine's nice. Yes.
[Claire] The white leather,
that would be perfect for her bodysuit.
The tiniest bodysuit,
which literally has, like, three closures
- that can snap off.
- Yeah.
[Claire] When I think of rock,
I'm immediately thinking of,
like, the story of a powerful lead female
who has this male partner,
but he's obviously
in a more submissive role.
So we're doing the female
like, a really skimpy,
white snake bodysuit, barely there.
And then for the man,
some strapping harnesses
and a leather pair of shorts.
I'm excited for this challenge,
and I love leather.
So we're really marrying, like,
our aesthetics together.
Yeah, I was excited about the idea.
- [Adolfo laughs] The idea.
- Yeah.
[Ashton laughs] Holy [bleeps]
- [Marco] Getting there?
- Getting somewhere. I don't know where.
Ashton is, like,
outside of his comfort zone.
I think he has to get it together.
I'm really worried about him
not turning something out.
I think I'll do the jacket out
of the patent leather, the black.
- Yeah.
- It'll ground it.
[Marco] It's gonna look awesome.
[Ashton] I know I'm really good
at banging out patent leather,
and that starts putting me at ease.
You use what you need. I don't need any.
Great.
[Minju] Angel,
everybody actually started already
- so I think we have to hurry,
- Yeah.
otherwise we're gonna be really late
at the end.
[Angel] Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.
[Minju]
So, what I was thinking, small dress.
So it's going to be tight on the top
and then create volume below.
The female look,
it's going to be really heavy,
silver leather dress,
and inside we will use lace mesh.
Glam and sexy and cool.
[Angel] Yes. And the male look,
we're going to make a vest.
[Minju] Check and tartan, you know,
like, the fabric.
And then we are also going to make
a silver raincoat and pink trousers.
I will just start on this look, okay then?
Mm-hmm, yes, yes, yes.
[Ashton] This is gonna be fierce, honey.
[Marco] Yeah, it looks cool.
[Carli] I just want to make sure it's,
like, rock and roll enough.
We're doing a patchwork leather jacket.
It's really rock and roll.
- Yeah?
- With safety pins on it.
[laughs]
- It's cute, no?
- It's pretty.
We would like to design these looks
with a strong sense of craftsmanship.
We came up this idea of making
little leather ticket stubs
that would then be pinned
all over the looks.
So I hope that I can do a good job.
- [Tan] All right, Charles and Angelo.
- Hi, guys.
Hello, boys. Tell us what you're making,
first and foremost, please.
We'll be doing a kilt.
Oh, you're doing a kilt?
So, a bit of glam rock
meets a little bit of punk.
The female is wearing
a baroque gold over-sized jacket,
and the male will be wearing a kilt,
using the reverse side
of the baroque fabric.
He will also be wearing
a black leather tank top
with safety pin detailing on a gold heart.
Looks a little Liberace at this point.
- Yeah.
- [Alexa] It's cool.
Angelo, I know that music heavily inspires
the way that you design,
because you're sensitive
and romantic, right?
Yes. For me, it's natural.
- When I was teenager
- Yeah.
I was very unsure about myself.
And I started to use fashion
as a protection.
I started to create dresses
since when I was three years old.
For other people, I was an alien.
And fashion helps me to grow as a person.
And this is why, my own collection,
I decided to give the people a message.
Everybody are different.
But you can feel stronger,
and sure about yourself,
because you deserve to be special.
You're an alien, still.
You just found other aliens.
Yeah.
Look at him go!
- This is new.
- [laughing]
I've gotta to be real with you,
sometimes we come over here,
it doesn't look like you're doing work.
- [laughs] It's Angelo's new way.
- Good!
Angelo, we have to recut this. It's wrong.
This has to be this way.
Okay.
Good luck, guys.
[Tan] Angel and Minju.
- [Angel] Hi.
- [Tan] Hello, dear.
What are you making, Minju?
I'm making sexy!
- Hey!
- [laughing]
- Correct.
- [Angel] We're making sexy!
Guys, how involved are you
with rock music?
When was the last time you went
to see a band play live?
- [laughs] I went to the rock festival.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
But I was so drunk!
You were drunk at the festival?
Yeah, that's why we are going for.
"That's what I was going for!
I was going to get drunk."
After Minju has three shots,
she's non-stop dancing for a whole night.
[laughs] Headbanging!
I'm like, "Oh, my God."
Yeah.
You were at the bottom, unfortunately,
on the last challenge.
Has it given you that extra drive
to really do this?
- I don't want to go home yet.
- [Angel] Yeah.
- [Tan] Good luck to you both.
- [Alexa] Thanks, guys.
[Tan] Come on.
Do we want this top be, like, fitted?
Yeah, I think maybe that's cooler.
My only dilemma right now
is it's feeling a little simple.
I'm looking at Marco, he's got this volume
and he's got this fur.
Like, how can I balance this off of it?
Let's just do a four-foot fringe.
It's glam rock.
Let's just cut all this leather,
insert into the arm,
and that ultimately is glam rock.
I think anyone would wear these pieces.
I mean, you know, maybe not my mom.
- Marco.
- That looks amazing. I love it.
- Your mom would look epic.
- My mom would totally wear it.
I can't believe we're doing, like,
a full-paneled leather jacket.
You have decided to do
a very complicated jacket.
I didn't think it was.
At what point did you not think?
Leather is notoriously difficult
to work with.
You can't unpick it
because it leaves holes.
It has to be right the first time
or else you ruin the whole panel.
Right, that's the jacket front.
That looks nice.
- God, it is big, isn't it?
- Yeah, it's huge. I told you it was huge.
In terms of fabrics,
we've chosen something subtle,
which is kind of scary when everyone else
is doing a bit more outlandish.
[Daniel] It's really nerve-racking to see
what everyone's chosen in terms of colors
So let's hope it's the right choice.
We'll see.
[Charles] Just continue, babe.
This is gonna be hard to hand-sew,
so just do it as quickly as you can,
'cause I want to do this.
[Ashton] Now for round two, the fun part.
[Claire] How's your jacket coming along?
[Adolfo] I just punched all the holes
into the coat,
and so now I'm actually adding
all the massive safety pins.
- How about you?
- The bodysuit is done.
In the next two hours, I want to get
the shell of the jacket basically done.
- [Adolfo] They're gonna look sick.
- Yeah, I think so, too.
[Minju] Angel, cool, right?
It's not cute, right?
- [Angel] No, it's really cool.
- Cool, right?
[Angel] Mnh-mnh. All I worry is mine.
I think I have been extremely slow.
The female look has a lot more progress
than the men's one,
and I think it's because I really struggle
of what my mind tells me I'm supposed
to do
and the reality.
The problem is this really doesn't go
with the silver.
- [Angel] Hmm.
- Just forget about this
- and make a silver trench coat.
- If I give up this
- But it's gonna be only silver, right?
- Yeah.
I think now we really don't have time,
and I do have to make a decision.
[Angel] Every fabric in silver
will make our life easier.
Everything has been changed.
- So we have to make a new plan.
- Yeah.
I have to drape everything
to make a silver trench coat
on the knees, vest and also the pants.
This is a lot, this is definitely a lot.
[Alexa] You have one hour left
till the end of day one, everyone!
Chop-chop!
[exhales]
How are we feeling about it all?
Are we impressed?
Yeah, I mean, I guess
it's a challenge like no other.
There's a plethora
of different directions.
Let's start with Angelo and Charles,
Alexa Chung.
- Okay, hemmed.
- Wow.
- You look nice in a kilt.
- I know, right?
[Alexa] I think it's an interesting use
of fabric so far.
- One side for the women's look
- Yeah.
and the reverse
to mirror it with the man's look.
Look at them two together.
- They are amazing.
- Uh-huh.
[Carli] I actually think the red's nice.
[Daniel]
Yeah, I do as well. It's quite chic.
[Alexa] Carli and Daniel,
they are creating a grunge look.
Yeah, but in a more subdued version.
I just hope that theirs
can seem as compelling
- as some of the other teams.
- Me too.
It'll replicate the silhouette.
Ashton and Marco,
they've gone for glam rock,
and it is fun and playful.
It's interesting to see it done
- in these really psychedelic fabrics.
- Yeah.
But I wonder if their looks
- are too costume-y.
- Right.
[Adolfo]
How are you doing, love? That looks sick.
- [Claire] I know, right?
- Sick!
I think this is
my favorite challenge so far.
Adolfo and Claire.
Love the fabric
and I love the idea, actually.
So they're both wearing
these outerwear pieces
with kind of very little underneath.
If they don't execute it beautifully,
it could go south very quickly.
[Claire] Have you got everything cut?
[Adolfo]
Everything but the straps for on top.
[Claire] Make it perfect.
[Angel] I think it's good.
[Tan] Angel and Minju!
Yes. Minju says she's really gonna
embrace that sexy vibe.
- And prove she can do sexy.
- Yeah.
My only concern with this
is I don't know where they're going
with the men's look
as much as I do with the women's look.
Minju, I'm really worried
about the men's one.
- I know, I know.
- I'm, like, crazy worried.
- It's because of their fabric choices.
- I know.
- Do they not understand rock maybe?
- Yeah, I've got a feeling they don't.
I'm really scared.
Ten minutes left till the end of day one,
everyone.
Just ten minutes left.
It's gonna have to be a quickie
in the loo!
[laughing]
[Charles] The heart's too perfect for me.
[Angelo] Don't worry.
Rock shows us the more difficult side
of love.
We use a lot of pins in the heart.
Because pin touch your heart,
and it's like a sign of suffering.
- [Charles] This is rock. You've done it.
- This is spectacular.
- One minute left, everyone. Vite, vite!
- [Angel] Oh, my God!
- [Ashton] You got all the black [bleeps]?
- Nope.
- Are you all right, Carli?
- Yeah.
[Minju] We have to hurry.
[Charles] There we go.
Oh, that's it.
Okay, tools down, everyone.
The workday is over.
[Tan] Your models will be here
in the morning and so will we.
Go home, catch some Zs
and hopefully dream
about winning Next in Fashion.
- Good night to you all.
- Good night.
- Want my arm?
- Yes, please.
We're gonna go drink some whiskey!
[Daniel] Rock and roll.
[laughing]
[Angel]
Tomorrow's going to be the most tough day.
Okay, kids, it's rock and roll time.
I'm gonna give you three tips
in which you can make your wardrobe
look a little bit more edgy.
First up
rip it up and start again.
You've got a classic T-shirt,
or maybe some jeans. [grunts]
[grunts] You just have to rip it
and then you're gonna look like
a proper rock star.
The next one is
lead singers absolutely love
studding things.
We don't know why, but it definitely
makes you look more edgy.
Get some grommets and hand clasp them on
and it'll be fine.
Lastly
it is all in the attitude, yeah?
So maybe you just wanna walk around
like this, being a little bit mean.
Rock and roll: 10% music,
90% snarling at people.
Pfft, whatever!
That's my tips. See you later.
No, I should-- With an attitude.
Peace out.
[footsteps approach]
Ooh, I hear a graceful clippety-clop.
- It's a small Shetland pony behind you.
- [laughing]
Just kidding, it's me!
- Hello. You look gorgeous.
- Neigh!
Thanks, so do you.
Thanks. I love this.
Who's this little number by?
This is Christopher Kane.
- No way!
- Yes, I'm trying to win brownie points.
- You little kissbotch.
- I am a kiss-butt.
- Hi!
- Hey.
We should probably concentrate,
the designers are here.
- Morning!
- Welcome back, everybody.
Runway day is here again,
and you've just got four hours
to complete your rock looks.
[Alexa] Indeed.
We've brought your designs backstage,
the runway is being built as we speak.
The models are about to arrive,
so without further ado, let's get to it.
- Yeah.
- [laughing, chattering]
Let's go.
[Minju] Okay, so you work on the pants.
You fix this, and I'll work
on the new pattern for this one.
I'm going to put the collar on the
you know.
So actually,
we are making new design today.
I'm very stressed out because, you know,
if we have a certain plan,
we know how it's gonna be at the end.
But it's not like that right now.
We don't know the final look,
but we have to push us to make something.
This is the worst moment.
Okay, for the menswear,
I'm gonna make the vest now,
because it has to be, like,
connected with that.
And also, I think the fabric's quite long.
The men's look is definitely a big thing.
We have to finish the front opening,
the edge, and also,
we have to make a vest,
and plus today, we have to make new pants
out of the pink reflective material.
So it's going to be really tough.
Sick. This looks good.
[Ashton] Let me see this on you.
Sickening. Now try the jumpsuit on.
[laughs]
[Charles] For me, we have foundation done,
but now I feel like so much
of what our aesthetic for rock is,
- is styling.
- Okay.
[Daniel] You're gonna work on the sleeve.
I will work on the collar.
Before the runway show,
we still got quite a lot of sewing
to do on the women's jacket.
We have to make all of these leather tabs
to go all over the man's look.
We need to put a piece in here
to attach the collar to the lapel.
I wouldn't close the gap completely.
I might even try and fashion a top.
[man] Designers, three hours
to runway show, please. Thank you.
- [man 2] Hold, hold, hold.
- Hi.
Hi!
- So excited!
- Hi!
This side looks okay, actually.
[Minju] No, it's not.
Just make it here tight, then goes
like that and then it's better.
I might have to
- Am I in there?
- [Claire] Yeah.
For the women's,
I've still got to fit the bodysuit,
'cause the bodysuit is all about fit.
- Mm-hmm.
- So it just needs to be, like, tight.
So gorgeous!
It's a little too glamorous right now,
we need to make it more edgy.
- I want to put with the chains.
- Garter belts.
- From here, golden chain.
- Garter belts. I agree.
For me, without the styling,
you cannot understand rock pieces.
- Like this?
- For me, it's too much.
For me, it's more elegant
if it can sit from inside.
- Like, the chains come down.
- Oh, yes.
[Angelo]
I am working to create the body jewels
for the look of the woman.
[Charles] She's hot.
Oh, it's definitely there.
[Daniel] This leather is horrible to sew.
[Carli] It's really heavy.
[Daniel] This leather is for handbags
and shoes. Next time--
We're not doing any more leather, Daniel.
No, next time,
we're making a Play-Doh look.
I want full Play-Doh,
Sellotaped to the body.
- There you go. Done.
- [laughs] Thank you.
[man] Designers, two hours
to finish up, please. Thank you.

Angel, do you think
you can get the pants done?
- Yeah, I'm doing my best.
- Okay. No, you have to do it.
[laughs] There's no choice.
[Angel] I have to finish pants,
plus the zip finishing of the jacket,
plus the blouse sleeve.
That's really a lot!
I'm so glittery!
[laughing]
[Charles] That looks better.
[Adolfo] This one,
I don't know where this one went to.
Oh, don't worry, just sling it
over the shoulder.
I can't remember, either.
- I'll tie it to the back or something.

I've designed, like,
punk and goth looks before,
when I was, like, really angry
for this really bad year that I had.
2017 was a really important year
because it was the year
that I think kind of catapulted me
into, like, where I am today.
I created a collection, and I presented it
in a fashion show in LA.
The next day,
I dropped off the collection,
then I get a text message,
"There's smoke coming out of your store."
By the time I got there,
firemen had already knocked it out.
I lost about maybe 60% to 70%
of my stuff that was in there.
So then I go through the paperwork
and I see that the insurance
had not been paid by my previous partners
for, like, over a year.
And so then I was like,
"What am I gonna do?"
So, I basically had to start from scratch.
I think it was the best thing
that could have ever happened to me,
because it made me focus on myself,
and it made me just be determined
to do what I love as a full-time career.
It'd be really nice to kick some butt
and get this challenge.
[Daniel] We're getting towards the end
of the challenge
and we haven't put
any of the leather tabs on yet.
Do all of our tabs.
That's why I'm talking very fast!
We've said we wanted to take grunge
to a more elevated level.
So it really depends on how we've
safety-pinned leather tabs to the fabric.
So it has to be right,
else we ruin the whole concept.
[man] Designers, just under 30 minutes

I'm a fan of the kilt, being Scottish,
which is great.
- [Beth Ditto] Oh, you would love that.
- [Christopher Kane] Yes. Unbelievable.
Ooh!
[Kane] A harness with nothing underneath?
That's a bit lackluster for me.
- [Alexa] Fifth Element, though?
- Quite Matrix-y, you're right.
[Alexa] How do you feel about the use
of the safety pins?
Leave it to the punks.
Leave it to Versace.
But this is cute.
When people think rock and roll,
they immediately go to safety pins.
Two, one, go!
Wow!
[Kane] I think the silhouette is okay.
They have a very clear aesthetic.
It's always over-sized.
[Kane] Love that finesse.
It isn't something that we've seen before.
And that's what fashion should do.
It should take you places.
- [Ditto] But the cut on those pants,
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
- I wanna just cut them off.
- Me too.
- [Ashton] Ooh, just a peek!
- [laughing]
[Tan] These things on him
represent ticket stubs from concerts.
- I think that's cool.
- Me, too.
[Elizabeth Stewart] I think it's
an interesting take on rock and roll.
- It's not predictable.
- [Alexa] I really love his silhouette.
This is really wearable.
The pants are great.
From the front, it's very '90s,
and from the back, it's strictly '70s.
Three, two, one, go!
- Yo!
- That looks great.
I really like the jacket.
[Kane] This, for me, is the most costume
and the more wearable.
If you were a rock star,
you would go to that or a pop star.
- [Ditto] That's smart, really smart.
- Maybe they're gearing up for that.
I could totally see, like,
Lady Gaga could wear that.
Yeah!
Whoo!
- [Angelo] Great.
- Thank you.
[laughs]
- I felt like a rock star.
- You are, dear.
I really want to see a close look
at everything backstage.
All right, well, Beth, thank you so much

- We truly appreciate it.
- Thank you!
Bye, my love. Thank you so much.
Don't be too harsh.
Thank you, Beth. Bye, sweetheart.
- Bye! After you, my love.
- Bye! Good luck, everybody!
[laughs]
Thank you, thank you, baby.
The clothes themselves
really do have that rock feel.
You could see this on stage,
this is like an Iggy Pop moment,
this is like a Gaga, a Cardi B.
Can you take the little bolero off?
- I mean, the fit's amazing.
- That fit's amazing.
- Boom.
- [Kane] I mean
[Alexa]
Yeah, that cut's amazing, isn't it?
This is stretch, and it's really hard
to do stretch really well.
And the finish,
- that's really quite flawless.
- Thank you.
I think the most successful part
of these looks is the jackets.
I think they have desirability outside
of just being performance wear.
I would want to take that off,
wear it with some jeans and, like,
a vintage T-shirt.
Either one of them
I can imagine myself wearing
or even them being sold in stores.
- Thank you so much, really appreciate it.
- It really means a lot.
I think it's very much in keeping
with what you do.
- You know I love your aesthetic.
- Thank you so much.
That said,
it doesn't feel very rock and roll to me.
Maybe a little bit more skin,
maybe a little bit more fitted.
I do like the fact that you've added
other elements.
You've added a mesh. You've added a tulle.
You've added pieces that could
make it a little more sexy.
But the pant hem
was very obviously unfinished.
And I think that that really did distract
from everything else that was going on.
The ladies' look, can I suggest,
if you had done even just shorter,
I would've been having
a different conversation.
Like, I'm just going to fold this up.
- [Minju] Yeah. Yeah.
- If you had just given me that,
we would've thought,
"Okay, she's got the rocker, sexy vibe."
But it feels like she's hiding.
It feels very modest.
And rock and roll isn't modest.
They're just small tweaks,
and they would've made all the difference.
I don't think judges
like our look this time.
I have hope, but at the same time,
tons of worry.
We think, on the concept of rock,
usually rock wants to show the dark side
of the people.
And this is why we choose the love,
because all the time, it starts from love.
And this is more your aesthetic,
is this more you?
This is definitely more Angelo.
I always wanted to wear a black kilt.
I can see you wearing that.
- This is me.
- You've worn a couple of kilts so far.
So I'm like, let's infuse, really,
what he's all about
and what I'm all about
and just kind of marry each other
and have it explode.
Can I see the back of you?
That detail's really nice,
with the chain and safety pin.
Like, a dress of that on her
would've been great, super short.
I must admit, I love the kilt.
Just so punk and rock.
The silhouette I think is amazing
what you've done.
But for me, for the rock thing,
I would love to have seen it cropped
or maybe like a patent pencil skirt
or something.
I think where he's going
- is really great and really relevant now.
- [both] Thank you.
You guys
what were you thinking?
JK! Oh, my God, you guys!
It's so well considered.
It's understated rock and roll.
It's still sexy.
It's grunge, but you've made it sexy.
It's not very often I watch the runway
and think, "I want those pieces."
- And I want every piece.
- Thank you.
I love the proportions of this jacket,
I think it's incredible.
I know so many people
who would want to wear it.
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
- [Stewart] The colors are fantastic,
and you recognize
that a great rock and roll look
can be jeans and a T-shirt.
I especially love how you interpreted it.
It came from your heads
and not from the collective conscious
of what rock and roll is.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
When Claire came up with the concept,
I said, "I love her with this jacket."
The idea was to have this jacket
and underneath
reveals this dominatrix woman.
And what's underneath him reveals, like,
the guy that she's about to conquer.
So the idea was to give them something
that's luxe, wearable and punk.
With the safety pins holding it together,
the closure with the spikes.
Love the tailoring.
I love these raw edges.
I think that's really smart.
It gives that raw cut, DIY feel,
which is so rock and roll and punk.
But I would say,
I don't love the safety pin part.
It's borderline tacky.
I think because they're so intrinsically
linked to rock and roll,
it's, like, a tough one to plump for
and then not twist it.
And I think the silhouette of this jacket
is really nice,
and I really love the duffel.
Because they're tonally in the same pool,
it might have been nice to see
something that was a bit more disparate
in this,
to, like, make an impact on the runway.
I'd expect it to be paired
with something else a bit more imaginative
than a harness or just a leotard.
It just lacked
kind of a different dimension.
It doesn't need to be so out
of a parallel universe.
I'm not really sure
where we're gonna rank with this one.
Everyone's take on what rock is
is completely different,
so they're not huge fans of it,
but I still like it.
Okay, guys,
five very different looks there.
- It's the rock and roll challenge.
- Yes.
- What do we think?
- I really liked Angelo and Charles.
There were some original thoughts.
There was a lot of there,
and the closer you got to it,
actually the more you could appreciate
their craftsmanship.
- [Kane] Really great.
- Let's talk about Claire and Adolfo.
[Stewart] I think they made
two really beautiful coats.
- [Kane] Mm-hmm.
- They didn't really take it beyond that.
From their clothes,
I didn't see rock one bit.
You don't put a white leotard
underneath a leather coat.
Angel and Minju.
[Kane] I think they got a lot of talent.
The trousers had something,
but they were really unfinished.
All their ideas were buried underneath
this big pile of silver.
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
- Okay, let's talk about Carli and Daniel.
[Stewart] They understood that simplicity
really works in rock and roll.
- And they had a concept.
- [Kane] Yeah.
It was very subtle, but it was a story,
which we need.
It was beautifully nuanced.
Ashton and Marco. It made me sit up.
- [Tan] Yeah.
- They really have technical skills.
And working with stretch fabric,
the way it's cut,
- the way it fits the model's body.
- [Tan] Yeah.
I could see them placed
on pop stars right now.
Okay, so, I think we all agree.
- Right?
- Absolutely, yes.
- Shall we let them know?
- Yeah.
- This is the scary bit.
- Mm-hmm.
I never ever want to do this part,
but it is indeed a competition,
and ultimately,
there can only be one winner.
The winning team
Actually,
Christopher Kane, why don't you tell us?
The winning team
of tonight's challenge is
Carli and Daniel.
- Oh!
- [Carli] Thank you!
- [laughs] Thank you.
- Aww.
[laughs] I'm so happy.
Yeah, I don't know what to say.
I really loved how you executed designs
that were true to your vision
of a rock and roll star.
No clichés and you also understood
that a simple look
can be a major rock and roll moment.
[both] Thank you.
[Alexa]
I particularly loved the ticket stub idea
and then how that was incorporated
into both designs
and how they worked
so harmoniously together.
Yeah.
- [Alexa] Congratulations.
- [both] Thank you.
We are alongside some amazing designers
who do these huge,
outrageous pieces of work,
and that's not our aesthetic.
And we're so happy
that you saw what we wanted to convey.
You took me somewhere more than rock,
you gave out a DNA, a part of your brand,
which it worked really well.
I'm really happy for you.
- Thank you.
- Amazing work, Carli and Daniel.
- We love you.
- [Alexa] Well done.
Thank you.
Good job.
Now comes the bad news.
So, this is the point in the night
that I absolutely hate,
but we're gonna have to ask two teams
to step forward.
The first of those two teams is
Angel and Minju.
The second team that we're gonna need
to step forward is
Claire and Adolfo.
Oh, God.
Angel and Minju,
I know that you were trying
to make this sexy,
and the women's look that you gave us
felt modest.
That man's look,
it needed some work, and it showed.
It turned out to be a ball of silver.
That's all we saw coming down the runway.
And I really want to see you push harder
to address the challenges better.
Do you think that you may have gotten
as far as you can in this competition?
[both laugh] No.
Definitely, there's lots of things
we have inside,
like, in our hearts.
[Angel] We have a lot we haven't showed,
and we are really excited to show them.
Somehow, a bit too excited.
[Tan] Yeah.
Minju, are you okay?
- Yeah, sorry.
- [Tan] That's okay, don't worry.
We're gonna move on.
[Alexa] Claire and Adolfo,
I liked these two beautiful outerwear
pieces that you made,
but I felt like it just was lacking
that extra bit as a juxtaposition
to really bring it to life
and to express the attitude that I guess
I was expecting to see.
You were putting the "safe" in safety pin
on this one.
When seeing your pieces on the runway,
it didn't really scream rock and roll.
But I think you just missed the mark.
[Tan] We know that time is tough,
so here's your chance to let us know,
"If we had more time,
this is what we would've done."
I think finding ways
to be more innovative with cuts,
with patterning, maybe create
some of that drama that I love,
but not necessarily in the way that,
you know, I'm used to.
There's definitely things that we missed,
like putting the looks together
as a whole.
I think there could've been
a lot more cohesion.
But I'm really happy
with the women's look that I made,
to be honest.
[Tan]
Okay, thank you so much, all of you.
So, we have come to a unanimous decision.
The team leaving Next in Fashion
is
Claire and Adolfo.
Minju and Angel, please step back.
Claire and Adolfo, I have to know
what's going through your minds right now.
These two are amazing.
[laughs] Like, yeah, come on.
They have to stay.
- [sniffles]
- [Tan] Adolfo.
It's been amazing.
Claire, I have so much respect for her.
And the challenge
is really putting two people
that have completely different aesthetics
- and completely different worlds together.
- Yeah.
I think we definitely did
the best we definitely could.
[Alexa] I'm really sorry to see you go
because I do think
you're both incredibly talented
and have brought me so much joy
from things that you've done,
so I'll miss seeing those creations.
I love so much of what you did
in this competition,
and I think you just needed
a little bit more time
to find your groove together.
[Kane] I commend what you've done
in two days. I think it's phenomenal,
and I wish you all the best of luck
in the future.
[both] Thank you.
You are so, so talented,
and I know you're gonna do
incredible things,
and I can't wait to watch.
I think there was a big part of me
that kind of lost the creative passion
that I used to have.
And this was exciting,
and this was just something
to prove to people
that if you want something,
follow what you believe in,
and you can make things happen.
Good night to you both.
Thank you.
I came on this competition
to, like, be creative.
I think that it was really nice
to remember, like, what kind of
things you can do.
[laughs]
And show people that, like,
you can look like this
and still be a serious person.
I mean, just because I'm small,
brown, half-Asian,
doesn't mean that I'm just,
like, a cute baby.
- Though I am also that.
- You are cute.
[laughs]
[Tan] Okay, you guys,
there are just four teams remaining.
But
from this point on,
your teams
are
over.
[laughs] Oh, God!
That's right. Your adventure as a team
ends right here.
Jeez.
[Alexa] From this point on,
your teammate is gonna become
your competition.
[trills]
- [Tan] And we're so excited,
- [Alexa] Very.
'cause we finally get
to see your individual voices. My gosh!
[laughs]
[laughs] So, Carli and Daniel,
on the night when you win the challenge
as a union,
suddenly we're blowing it apart.
How does that feel?
So, it's gonna be strange not working
with Carli because I do really enjoy it.
I just already said to her
that I'll be going over to her station
- and being like, "Stay calm, Carli."
- Aww!
- That's kind of how our partnership works.
- [laughing]
[laughs] Like, I keep her calm.
There'll be no texting the ex in this one.
- [laughing]
- [Alexa] You've gotta keep it clear.
[Tan] Angel, you look like

It absolutely makes me nervous.
We almost feel like twins or family.

I'm gonna be mean Minju.
- Mean-ju!
- Like this?
[laughs]
- Morning, everyone! Hi!
- Morning!
- Leather.
- Gather round. You know the drill.
Come hither!
- Whoa!
- Sorry!
We just saw way more
than we were planning on seeing.
I always wondered what was
under people's kilts, and now I know.
- It was like oranges in a fishnet.
- [laughing]
- A bag of onions.
- [laughing]
Good morning, you guys.
Welcome back to your home away from home.
Today's challenge is all about
Rock.
- Yes!
- [laughing]
[Alexa Chung] Yeah.
Angelo, you had an incredible reaction.
Are you excited?
Yeah! [laughing]
This is Angelo's challenge.
Most of the people compare me
to Kurt Cobain in fashion.
- Okay.
- Because I am sensitive,
but at the same time,
my approach is more aggressive.
Your approach is very aggressive.
I saw it as we walked into this room.
It's very, very aggressive.
[Angelo] When I was a teenager,
Kurt Cobain teach me a lot
because he say you don't need
to be perfect to be a superstar.
I start to create a rock band
to share this message.
I was a singer,
but I was not very talented.
[laughing]
I decided to be the Kurt Cobain
of fashion.
Tomorrow is our rock and roll runway,
where Alexa and I will judge your designs
with A-list stylist Elizabeth Stewart.
And we will be joined
by a very special guest judge.
I'm really jazzed about this one.
He's a designer who's always been able
to execute a vision that's equal parts
subversive and powerful.
He designs bold and rebellious stuff,
earning him a loyal following
amongst an A-list elite.
We will of course be welcoming
Christopher Kane.
- [gasping]
- Yeah.
[laughing]
[Angel] Sorry.
[Alexa]
Angel and Minju, you literally gasped.
- Are you a big fan of Christopher Kane?
- Yes, yes, yes.
I really, really love Christopher Kane.
He just makes lots of new technology
and new fabric manipulation.
- [laughs] He's definitely a rock star.
- Yeah.
[Tan France] Rock has influenced fashion
since the days of Elvis Presley.
And like all fashion, rock and roll style
is continuously evolving.
From ripped T-shirts and jeans
to leather jackets and patches and studs.
Rock and roll is not afraid
of experimentation,
and neither is fashion.
It's loud, crazy,
rebellious, rambunctious.
It's even a little bit dirty and grimy.
Just how I like it.
- [laughing]
- [Alexa] And for this challenge,
we would like to see designs
that really embrace that energy.
[Tan] You'll be working with one female
model and one male model.
You can put whoever you want
in whatever you want.
I really love this challenge,
there's so many different directions
that you could all take it in.
There's punk, grunge, alternative.
And there's not just music genres.
Rock is all about an attitude.
Yes.
So we only have one rule, and that is
There are no rules, man!
[laughing]
It's rock and roll.
Just show us something really unexpected.
We do not want you to feel limited
by any means,
so our closet has been given
a rock and roll makeover.
Ooh!
[Alexa] In there, you're gonna find
everything from the world of rock.
We're talking leather, grommets,
- studs, skulls.
- Wow!
Okay, kids,
let's turn those designs up to 11.
- [laughing]
- Your rock and roll challenge starts
now!
- Oh, my God.
- [Charles] Angelo, go.
[Angel] Oh, my God. Be careful, guys.
[Minju] Oh, no! Come on.
Hey, the red?
Because rock is something
that I don't know so much about,
I'm just, like, the fabric,
we need the right fabrics.
- As many as possible.
- [Angelo] Oh, my God.
- Do you need this?
- [laughs] No!
The first thing that I noticed
is some turquoise fur,
- and it's just out of Charles' reach.
- [grunts]
So maybe I'll actually have a chance
of getting it.
Damn it.
[laughing]
[Ashton] Marco, what are you thinking?
[Marco] For this particular challenge,
the first thing we're thinking is,
like, "Damn it!"
Since we have already done
a punk-inspired look
and a sort of grunge-inspired look,
the safest bet really is to do the glam.
What are you thinking?
David Bowie, Elton John?
Queen. Like, all this sort of, like,
big, bold, confident
Yeah. Something that we haven't
really touched upon is the catsuit.
In the past, the judges have said
that maybe our pieces
are too costume-y or extra.
But I also feel like,
I mean, what do you want us to do?
- Make something simple?
- [laughs]
- It's gonna be lame rock.
- It's not what we do.
[Daniel] Okay, I think glam is not us.
I mean, I'm drawn to grunge.
It's very versatile.
Yeah, I agree with you.
- Alexa!
- Yes.
- Rock and roll, my love.
- I know it's only rock and roll
- but I like it.
- Yeah!
In essence, what is rock and roll?
- It's about not playing by the rules.
- Yeah.
We're looking for designs
that are inspired by an attitude.
[Charles] The general silhouette,
this is the shape.
It needs to be more extreme.
Bit stronger.
- You are very elegant, Charles, sorry.
- Fine.
[laughing]
When you look out,
it's just like a sea of various fabrics.
It's kind of thrilling.
I think it's a fun one.
- Me too.
- Feels like there's, like
- There's energy in the room.
- Yeah.
I'm obviously immediately
thinking bondage,
'cause that's my experience,
'cause I, like, do fetish.
Everyone knows of a rock star
that they can reference.
Totally.
- Minju, what's rock mean to you?
- Hmm
I don't know.
Only thing I remember is this.
[screams]
Yeah.
For the female,
I think we should do almost this shape.
- Right? It'll be a dress.
- It will be amazing, baby.
This is gonna be gold, gold on gold.
[laughs] Yeah! I'm happy.
I pushed Charles.
"Please, free your mind!
And give the chance
for your baby to play the game."
So, in this challenge.
I will pull back for the first time,
and I'll let Angelo steer the direction.
If there's enough of this.
I'll check it out.
This is super amazing, in front and back.
You see the back? It's more amazing.
- The back is amazing. Use the back.
- [laughs]
Baby wants to play.
Can you imagine doing leather straps
and then add that on top of the garment?
They could be, like,
a collection of ticket stubs.
It could be that it's cascading
and it's something quite heavy and full.
[Carli] Yeah, I like that.
Rock is all about attitude.
And what I do in my work
is also about attitude and mood.
- Yeah, me too.
- The mood of yours is the same.
So hopefully we'll be able
to get behind this one.
For the man's look,
we have a navy blue wool top and bottom
with leather safety-pinned ticket stubs.
And for the woman,
I'm thinking an over-sized coat.
[Daniel] What are you thinking
in terms of fabric into that? Leather?
I mean, you know I'm all for the leather,
- 'cause I think it's really emo.
- Yeah.
It's inspired by myself,
back in the day.
A girl partying,
going out for, like, three weeks,
finding this coat on the sofa.
Puts on this coat,
obviously not hers 'cause it's huge.
Wow. This is a bit scary.
[laughs]
And the bodysuit foundation,
you think is gonna be
I think this is it right here.
Look. These three.
'Cause I'm gonna be bringing that in,
underneath this
[laughs] What are you going for?
I'm going for what we talked about,
Ashton.
Our plan is to create
a crop turquoise fur jacket
with a gold, iridescent,
patchwork catsuit.
And for the male model,
Ashton is gonna be making
a motorcycle jacket
and some gold lamé
high-waisted stretch pants.
Are you using any black anywhere?
I totally can.
I don't have any in right now.
All right.
I've worked with more color these past
few challenges than I have in years.
[laughs]
Not exactly what I feel comfortable with.
- I'm super excited about it.
- Shocking.
Glam, Ashton, glam.
- This time, I want very, very naughty.
- Naughty?
Last challenge,
we were in the bottom two,
because judges say our lingerie design
is not very sexy.
I think we should use some leather.
- You want to use leather?
- Like, something shiny.
So I think we need to prove
that we can do, you know, a sexy thing.
- I also love the check.
- The red one?
[Angel]
I think that one looks really sexy.
Yeah. It's kind of like
school uniform rock, you know.
Sexy, you know the mood?
- Really right on track as rock and roll.
- Yeah.
- Angel.
- Yes.
This is quite nice.
- 'Cause I want some shine.
- [laughs] Shine's nice. Yes.
[Claire] The white leather,
that would be perfect for her bodysuit.
The tiniest bodysuit,
which literally has, like, three closures
- that can snap off.
- Yeah.
[Claire] When I think of rock,
I'm immediately thinking of,
like, the story of a powerful lead female
who has this male partner,
but he's obviously
in a more submissive role.
So we're doing the female
like, a really skimpy,
white snake bodysuit, barely there.
And then for the man,
some strapping harnesses
and a leather pair of shorts.
I'm excited for this challenge,
and I love leather.
So we're really marrying, like,
our aesthetics together.
Yeah, I was excited about the idea.
- [Adolfo laughs] The idea.
- Yeah.
[Ashton laughs] Holy [bleeps]
- [Marco] Getting there?
- Getting somewhere. I don't know where.
Ashton is, like,
outside of his comfort zone.
I think he has to get it together.
I'm really worried about him
not turning something out.
I think I'll do the jacket out
of the patent leather, the black.
- Yeah.
- It'll ground it.
[Marco] It's gonna look awesome.
[Ashton] I know I'm really good
at banging out patent leather,
and that starts putting me at ease.
You use what you need. I don't need any.
Great.
[Minju] Angel,
everybody actually started already
- so I think we have to hurry,
- Yeah.
otherwise we're gonna be really late
at the end.
[Angel] Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.
[Minju]
So, what I was thinking, small dress.
So it's going to be tight on the top
and then create volume below.
The female look,
it's going to be really heavy,
silver leather dress,
and inside we will use lace mesh.
Glam and sexy and cool.
[Angel] Yes. And the male look,
we're going to make a vest.
[Minju] Check and tartan, you know,
like, the fabric.
And then we are also going to make
a silver raincoat and pink trousers.
I will just start on this look, okay then?
Mm-hmm, yes, yes, yes.
[Ashton] This is gonna be fierce, honey.
[Marco] Yeah, it looks cool.
[Carli] I just want to make sure it's,
like, rock and roll enough.
We're doing a patchwork leather jacket.
It's really rock and roll.
- Yeah?
- With safety pins on it.
[laughs]
- It's cute, no?
- It's pretty.
We would like to design these looks
with a strong sense of craftsmanship.
We came up this idea of making
little leather ticket stubs
that would then be pinned
all over the looks.
So I hope that I can do a good job.
- [Tan] All right, Charles and Angelo.
- Hi, guys.
Hello, boys. Tell us what you're making,
first and foremost, please.
We'll be doing a kilt.
Oh, you're doing a kilt?
So, a bit of glam rock
meets a little bit of punk.
The female is wearing
a baroque gold over-sized jacket,
and the male will be wearing a kilt,
using the reverse side
of the baroque fabric.
He will also be wearing
a black leather tank top
with safety pin detailing on a gold heart.
Looks a little Liberace at this point.
- Yeah.
- [Alexa] It's cool.
Angelo, I know that music heavily inspires
the way that you design,
because you're sensitive
and romantic, right?
Yes. For me, it's natural.
- When I was teenager
- Yeah.
I was very unsure about myself.
And I started to use fashion
as a protection.
I started to create dresses
since when I was three years old.
For other people, I was an alien.
And fashion helps me to grow as a person.
And this is why, my own collection,
I decided to give the people a message.
Everybody are different.
But you can feel stronger,
and sure about yourself,
because you deserve to be special.
You're an alien, still.
You just found other aliens.
Yeah.
Look at him go!
- This is new.
- [laughing]
I've gotta to be real with you,
sometimes we come over here,
it doesn't look like you're doing work.
- [laughs] It's Angelo's new way.
- Good!
Angelo, we have to recut this. It's wrong.
This has to be this way.
Okay.
Good luck, guys.
[Tan] Angel and Minju.
- [Angel] Hi.
- [Tan] Hello, dear.
What are you making, Minju?
I'm making sexy!
- Hey!
- [laughing]
- Correct.
- [Angel] We're making sexy!
Guys, how involved are you
with rock music?
When was the last time you went
to see a band play live?
- [laughs] I went to the rock festival.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
But I was so drunk!
You were drunk at the festival?
Yeah, that's why we are going for.
"That's what I was going for!
I was going to get drunk."
After Minju has three shots,
she's non-stop dancing for a whole night.
[laughs] Headbanging!
I'm like, "Oh, my God."
Yeah.
You were at the bottom, unfortunately,
on the last challenge.
Has it given you that extra drive
to really do this?
- I don't want to go home yet.
- [Angel] Yeah.
- [Tan] Good luck to you both.
- [Alexa] Thanks, guys.
[Tan] Come on.
Do we want this top be, like, fitted?
Yeah, I think maybe that's cooler.
My only dilemma right now
is it's feeling a little simple.
I'm looking at Marco, he's got this volume
and he's got this fur.
Like, how can I balance this off of it?
Let's just do a four-foot fringe.
It's glam rock.
Let's just cut all this leather,
insert into the arm,
and that ultimately is glam rock.
I think anyone would wear these pieces.
I mean, you know, maybe not my mom.
- Marco.
- That looks amazing. I love it.
- Your mom would look epic.
- My mom would totally wear it.
I can't believe we're doing, like,
a full-paneled leather jacket.
You have decided to do
a very complicated jacket.
I didn't think it was.
At what point did you not think?
Leather is notoriously difficult
to work with.
You can't unpick it
because it leaves holes.
It has to be right the first time
or else you ruin the whole panel.
Right, that's the jacket front.
That looks nice.
- God, it is big, isn't it?
- Yeah, it's huge. I told you it was huge.
In terms of fabrics,
we've chosen something subtle,
which is kind of scary when everyone else
is doing a bit more outlandish.
[Daniel] It's really nerve-racking to see
what everyone's chosen in terms of colors
So let's hope it's the right choice.
We'll see.
[Charles] Just continue, babe.
This is gonna be hard to hand-sew,
so just do it as quickly as you can,
'cause I want to do this.
[Ashton] Now for round two, the fun part.
[Claire] How's your jacket coming along?
[Adolfo] I just punched all the holes
into the coat,
and so now I'm actually adding
all the massive safety pins.
- How about you?
- The bodysuit is done.
In the next two hours, I want to get
the shell of the jacket basically done.
- [Adolfo] They're gonna look sick.
- Yeah, I think so, too.
[Minju] Angel, cool, right?
It's not cute, right?
- [Angel] No, it's really cool.
- Cool, right?
[Angel] Mnh-mnh. All I worry is mine.
I think I have been extremely slow.
The female look has a lot more progress
than the men's one,
and I think it's because I really struggle
of what my mind tells me I'm supposed
to do
and the reality.
The problem is this really doesn't go
with the silver.
- [Angel] Hmm.
- Just forget about this
- and make a silver trench coat.
- If I give up this
- But it's gonna be only silver, right?
- Yeah.
I think now we really don't have time,
and I do have to make a decision.
[Angel] Every fabric in silver
will make our life easier.
Everything has been changed.
- So we have to make a new plan.
- Yeah.
I have to drape everything
to make a silver trench coat
on the knees, vest and also the pants.
This is a lot, this is definitely a lot.
[Alexa] You have one hour left
till the end of day one, everyone!
Chop-chop!
[exhales]
How are we feeling about it all?
Are we impressed?
Yeah, I mean, I guess
it's a challenge like no other.
There's a plethora
of different directions.
Let's start with Angelo and Charles,
Alexa Chung.
- Okay, hemmed.
- Wow.
- You look nice in a kilt.
- I know, right?
[Alexa] I think it's an interesting use
of fabric so far.
- One side for the women's look
- Yeah.
and the reverse
to mirror it with the man's look.
Look at them two together.
- They are amazing.
- Uh-huh.
[Carli] I actually think the red's nice.
[Daniel]
Yeah, I do as well. It's quite chic.
[Alexa] Carli and Daniel,
they are creating a grunge look.
Yeah, but in a more subdued version.
I just hope that theirs
can seem as compelling
- as some of the other teams.
- Me too.
It'll replicate the silhouette.
Ashton and Marco,
they've gone for glam rock,
and it is fun and playful.
It's interesting to see it done
- in these really psychedelic fabrics.
- Yeah.
But I wonder if their looks
- are too costume-y.
- Right.
[Adolfo]
How are you doing, love? That looks sick.
- [Claire] I know, right?
- Sick!
I think this is
my favorite challenge so far.
Adolfo and Claire.
Love the fabric
and I love the idea, actually.
So they're both wearing
these outerwear pieces
with kind of very little underneath.
If they don't execute it beautifully,
it could go south very quickly.
[Claire] Have you got everything cut?
[Adolfo]
Everything but the straps for on top.
[Claire] Make it perfect.
[Angel] I think it's good.
[Tan] Angel and Minju!
Yes. Minju says she's really gonna
embrace that sexy vibe.
- And prove she can do sexy.
- Yeah.
My only concern with this
is I don't know where they're going
with the men's look
as much as I do with the women's look.
Minju, I'm really worried
about the men's one.
- I know, I know.
- I'm, like, crazy worried.
- It's because of their fabric choices.
- I know.
- Do they not understand rock maybe?
- Yeah, I've got a feeling they don't.
I'm really scared.
Ten minutes left till the end of day one,
everyone.
Just ten minutes left.
It's gonna have to be a quickie
in the loo!
[laughing]
[Charles] The heart's too perfect for me.
[Angelo] Don't worry.
Rock shows us the more difficult side
of love.
We use a lot of pins in the heart.
Because pin touch your heart,
and it's like a sign of suffering.
- [Charles] This is rock. You've done it.
- This is spectacular.
- One minute left, everyone. Vite, vite!
- [Angel] Oh, my God!
- [Ashton] You got all the black [bleeps]?
- Nope.
- Are you all right, Carli?
- Yeah.
[Minju] We have to hurry.
[Charles] There we go.
Oh, that's it.
Okay, tools down, everyone.
The workday is over.
[Tan] Your models will be here
in the morning and so will we.
Go home, catch some Zs
and hopefully dream
about winning Next in Fashion.
- Good night to you all.
- Good night.
- Want my arm?
- Yes, please.
We're gonna go drink some whiskey!
[Daniel] Rock and roll.
[laughing]
[Angel]
Tomorrow's going to be the most tough day.
Okay, kids, it's rock and roll time.
I'm gonna give you three tips
in which you can make your wardrobe
look a little bit more edgy.
First up
rip it up and start again.
You've got a classic T-shirt,
or maybe some jeans. [grunts]
[grunts] You just have to rip it
and then you're gonna look like
a proper rock star.
The next one is
lead singers absolutely love
studding things.
We don't know why, but it definitely
makes you look more edgy.
Get some grommets and hand clasp them on
and it'll be fine.
Lastly
it is all in the attitude, yeah?
So maybe you just wanna walk around
like this, being a little bit mean.
Rock and roll: 10% music,
90% snarling at people.
Pfft, whatever!
That's my tips. See you later.
No, I should-- With an attitude.
Peace out.
[footsteps approach]
Ooh, I hear a graceful clippety-clop.
- It's a small Shetland pony behind you.
- [laughing]

This is Christopher Kane.

- You little kissbotch.
- I am a kiss-butt.
- Hi!
- Hey.

- Morning!

Runway day is here again,

[Alexa] Indeed.
We've brought your designs backstage,
the runway is being built as we speak.
The models are about to arrive,
so without further ado, let's get to it.
- Yeah.
- [laughing, chattering]
Let's go.
[Minju] Okay, so you work on the pants.
You fix this, and I'll work
on the new pattern for this one.
I'm going to put the collar on the
you know.
So actually,
we are making new design today.
I'm very stressed out because, you know,
if we have a certain plan,
we know how it's gonna be at the end.
But it's not like that right now.
We don't know the final look,
but we have to push us to make something.
This is the worst moment.
Okay, for the menswear,
I'm gonna make the vest now,
because it has to be, like,
connected with that.
And also, I think the fabric's quite long.
The men's look is definitely a big thing.
We have to finish the front opening,
the edge, and also,
we have to make a vest,
and plus today, we have to make new pants
out of the pink reflective material.
So it's going to be really tough.
Sick. This looks good.
[Ashton] Let me see this on you.
Sickening. Now try the jumpsuit on.
[laughs]
[Charles] For me, we have foundation done,
but now I feel like so much
of what our aesthetic for rock is,
- is styling.
- Okay.
[Daniel] You're gonna work on the sleeve.
I will work on the collar.
Before the runway show,
we still got quite a lot of sewing
to do on the women's jacket.
We have to make all of these leather tabs
to go all over the man's look.
We need to put a piece in here
to attach the collar to the lapel.
I wouldn't close the gap completely.
I might even try and fashion a top.
[man] Designers, three hours

- [man 2] Hold, hold, hold.
- Hi.

[Minju] No, it's not.
Just make it here tight, then goes
like that and then it's better.
I might have to
- Am I in there?
- [Claire] Yeah.
For the women's,
I've still got to fit the bodysuit,
'cause the bodysuit is all about fit.
- Mm-hmm.
- So it just needs to be, like, tight.
So gorgeous!
It's a little too glamorous right now,
we need to make it more edgy.
- I want to put with the chains.
- Garter belts.
- From here, golden chain.
- Garter belts. I agree.
For me, without the styling,
you cannot understand rock pieces.
- Like this?
- For me, it's too much.
For me, it's more elegant
if it can sit from inside.
- Like, the chains come down.
- Oh, yes.
[Angelo]
I am working to create the body jewels
for the look of the woman.
[Charles] She's hot.
Oh, it's definitely there.
[Daniel] This leather is horrible to sew.
[Carli] It's really heavy.
[Daniel] This leather is for handbags
and shoes. Next time--
We're not doing any more leather, Daniel.
No, next time,
we're making a Play-Doh look.
I want full Play-Doh,

I've designed, like,
punk and goth looks before,
when I was, like, really angry
for this really bad year that I had.
2017 was a really important year
because it was the year
that I think kind of catapulted me
into, like, where I am today.
I created a collection, and I presented it
in a fashion show in LA.
The next day,
I dropped off the collection,

and I see that the insurance
had not been paid by my previous partners

- [Ashton] Ooh, just a peek!
- [laughing]
[Tan] These things on him
represent ticket stubs from concerts.
- I think that's cool.
- Me, too.
[Elizabeth Stewart] I think it's
an interesting take on rock and roll.
- It's not predictable.
- [Alexa] I really love his silhouette.
This is really wearable.
The pants are great.
From the front, it's very '90s,
and from the back, it's strictly '70s.
Three, two, one, go!
- Yo!
- That looks great.
I really like the jacket.
[Kane] This, for me, is the most costume
and the more wearable.
If you were a rock star,
you would go to that or a pop star.
- [Ditto] That's smart, really smart.
- Maybe they're gearing up for that.
I could totally see, like,
Lady Gaga could wear that.
Yeah!
Whoo!
- [Angelo] Great.
- Thank you.
[laughs]
- I felt like a rock star.
- You are, dear.
I really want to see a close look
at everything backstage.
All right, well, Beth, thank you so much
'cause you've been incredible.
- We truly appreciate it.
- Thank you!
Bye, my love. Thank you so much.
Don't be too harsh.
Thank you, Beth. Bye, sweetheart.
- Bye! After you, my love.
- Bye! Good luck, everybody!
[laughs]
Thank you, thank you, baby.
The clothes themselves
really do have that rock feel.
You could see this on stage,
this is like an Iggy Pop moment,
this is like a Gaga, a Cardi B.
Can you take the little bolero off?
- I mean, the fit's amazing.
- That fit's amazing.
- Boom.
- [Kane] I mean
[Alexa]
Yeah, that cut's amazing, isn't it?
This is stretch, and it's really hard
to do stretch really well.
And the finish,
- that's really quite flawless.
- Thank you.
I think the most successful part
of these looks is the jackets.
I think they have desirability outside
of just being performance wear.
I would want to take that off,
wear it with some jeans and, like,
a vintage T-shirt.
Either one of them
I can imagine myself wearing
or even them being sold in stores.
- Thank you so much, really appreciate it.
- It really means a lot.
I think it's very much in keeping
with what you do.
- You know I love your aesthetic.
- Thank you so much.
That said,
it doesn't feel very rock and roll to me.
Maybe a little bit more skin,
maybe a little bit more fitted.
I do like the fact that you've added
other elements.
You've added a mesh. You've added a tulle.
You've added pieces that could
make it a little more sexy.
But the pant hem
was very obviously unfinished.
And I think that that really did distract
from everything else that was going on.
The ladies' look, can I suggest,
if you had done even just shorter,
I would've been having
a different conversation.
Like, I'm just going to fold this up.
- [Minju] Yeah. Yeah.
- If you had just given me that,
we would've thought,
"Okay, she's got the rocker, sexy vibe."
But it feels like she's hiding.
It feels very modest.
And rock and roll isn't modest.
They're just small tweaks,
and they would've made all the difference.
I don't think judges
like our look this time.
I have hope, but at the same time,
tons of worry.
We think, on the concept of rock,
usually rock wants to show the dark side
of the people.
And this is why we choose the love,
because all the time, it starts from love.
And this is more your aesthetic,
is this more you?
This is definitely more Angelo.
I always wanted to wear a black kilt.
I can see you wearing that.
- This is me.
- You've worn a couple of kilts so far.
So I'm like, let's infuse, really,
what he's all about
and what I'm all about
and just kind of marry each other
and have it explode.
Can I see the back of you?
That detail's really nice,
with the chain and safety pin.
Like, a dress of that on her
would've been great, super short.
I must admit, I love the kilt.
Just so punk and rock.
The silhouette I think is amazing
what you've done.
But for me, for the rock thing,
I would love to have seen it cropped
or maybe like a patent pencil skirt
or something.
I think where he's going
- is really great and really relevant now.
- [both] Thank you.
You guys
what were you thinking?
JK! Oh, my God, you guys!
It's so well considered.
It's understated rock and roll.
It's still sexy.
It's grunge, but you've made it sexy.
It's not very often I watch the runway
and think, "I want those pieces."
- And I want every piece.
- Thank you.
I love the proportions of this jacket,
I think it's incredible.
I know so many people
who would want to wear it.
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
- [Stewart] The colors are fantastic,
and you recognize
that a great rock and roll look
can be jeans and a T-shirt.
I especially love how you interpreted it.
It came from your heads
and not from the collective conscious
of what rock and roll is.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
When Claire came up with the concept,
I said, "I love her with this jacket."
The idea was to have this jacket
and underneath
reveals this dominatrix woman.
And what's underneath him reveals, like,
the guy that she's about to conquer.
So the idea was to give them something
that's luxe, wearable and punk.
With the safety pins holding it together,
the closure with the spikes.
Love the tailoring.
I love these raw edges.
I think that's really smart.
It gives that raw cut, DIY feel,
which is so rock and roll and punk.
But I would say,
I don't love the safety pin part.
It's borderline tacky.
I think because they're so intrinsically
linked to rock and roll,
it's, like, a tough one to plump for
and then not twist it.
And I think the silhouette of this jacket
is really nice,
and I really love the duffel.
Because they're tonally in the same pool,
it might have been nice to see
something that was a bit more disparate
in this,
to, like, make an impact on the runway.
I'd expect it to be paired
with something else a bit more imaginative
than a harness or just a leotard.
It just lacked
kind of a different dimension.
It doesn't need to be so out
of a parallel universe.
I'm not really sure
where we're gonna rank with this one.
Everyone's take on what rock is
is completely different,
so they're not huge fans of it,
but I still like it.
Okay, guys,
five very different looks there.
- It's the rock and roll challenge.
- Yes.
- What do we think?
- I really liked Angelo and Charles.
There were some original thoughts.
There was a lot of there,
and the closer you got to it,
actually the more you could appreciate
their craftsmanship.
- [Kane] Really great.
- Let's talk about Claire and Adolfo.
[Stewart] I think they made
two really beautiful coats.
- [Kane] Mm-hmm.
- They didn't really take it beyond that.
From their clothes,
I didn't see rock one bit.
You don't put a white leotard
underneath a leather coat.
Angel and Minju.
[Kane] I think they got a lot of talent.
The trousers had something,
but they were really unfinished.
All their ideas were buried underneath
this big pile of silver.
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
- Okay, let's talk about Carli and Daniel.
[Stewart] They understood that simplicity
really works in rock and roll.
- And they had a concept.
- [Kane] Yeah.
It was very subtle, but it was a story,
which we need.
It was beautifully nuanced.
Ashton and Marco. It made me sit up.
- [Tan] Yeah.
- They really have technical skills.
And working with stretch fabric,
the way it's cut,
- the way it fits the model's body.
- [Tan] Yeah.
I could see them placed
on pop stars right now.
Okay, so, I think we all agree.
- Right?
- Absolutely, yes.
- Shall we let them know?
- Yeah.
- This is the scary bit.
- Mm-hmm.
I never ever want to do this part,
but it is indeed a competition,
and ultimately,
there can only be one winner.
The winning team
Actually,
Christopher Kane, why don't you tell us?
The winning team
of tonight's challenge is
Carli and Daniel.
- Oh!
- [Carli] Thank you!
- [laughs] Thank you.
- Aww.
[laughs] I'm so happy.
Yeah, I don't know what to say.
I really loved how you executed designs
that were true to your vision
of a rock and roll star.
No clichés and you also understood
that a simple look
can be a major rock and roll moment.
[both] Thank you.
[Alexa]
I particularly loved the ticket stub idea
and then how that was incorporated
into both designs
and how they worked
so harmoniously together.
Yeah.
- [Alexa] Congratulations.
- [both] Thank you.
We are alongside some amazing designers
who do these huge,
outrageous pieces of work,
and that's not our aesthetic.
And we're so happy
that you saw what we wanted to convey.
You took me somewhere more than rock,
you gave out a DNA, a part of your brand,
which it worked really well.
I'm really happy for you.
- Thank you.
- Amazing work, Carli and Daniel.
- We love you.
- [Alexa] Well done.
Thank you.
Good job.
Now comes the bad news.
So, this is the point in the night
that I absolutely hate,
but we're gonna have to ask two teams
to step forward.
The first of those two teams is
Angel and Minju.
The second team that we're gonna need
to step forward is
Claire and Adolfo.
Oh, God.
Angel and Minju,
I know that you were trying
to make this sexy,
and the women's look that you gave us
felt modest.
That man's look,
it needed some work, and it showed.
It turned out to be a ball of silver.
That's all we saw coming down the runway.
And I really want to see you push harder
to address the challenges better.
Do you think that you may have gotten
as far as you can in this competition?
[both laugh] No.
Definitely, there's lots of things
we have inside,
like, in our hearts.
[Angel] We have a lot we haven't showed,
and we are really excited to show them.
Somehow, a bit too excited.
[Tan] Yeah.
Minju, are you okay?
- Yeah, sorry.
- [Tan] That's okay, don't worry.
We're gonna move on.
[Alexa] Claire and Adolfo,
I liked these two beautiful outerwear
pieces that you made,
but I felt like it just was lacking
that extra bit as a juxtaposition
to really bring it to life
and to express the attitude that I guess
I was expecting to see.
You were putting the "safe" in safety pin
on this one.
When seeing your pieces on the runway,
it didn't really scream rock and roll.
But I think you just missed the mark.
[Tan] We know that time is tough,
so here's your chance to let us know,
"If we had more time,
this is what we would've done."
I think finding ways
to be more innovative with cuts,
with patterning, maybe create
some of that drama that I love,
but not necessarily in the way that,
you know, I'm used to.
There's definitely things that we missed,
like putting the looks together
as a whole.
I think there could've been
a lot more cohesion.
But I'm really happy
with the women's look that I made,
to be honest.
[Tan]
Okay, thank you so much, all of you.
So, we have come to a unanimous decision.
The team leaving Next in Fashion
is
Claire and Adolfo.
Minju and Angel, please step back.
Claire and Adolfo, I have to know
what's going through your minds right now.
These two are amazing.
[laughs] Like, yeah, come on.
They have to stay.
- [sniffles]
- [Tan] Adolfo.
It's been amazing.
Claire, I have so much respect for her.
And the challenge
is really putting two people
that have completely different aesthetics
- and completely different worlds together.
- Yeah.
I think we definitely did
the best we definitely could.
[Alexa] I'm really sorry to see you go
because I do think
you're both incredibly talented
and have brought me so much joy
from things that you've done,
so I'll miss seeing those creations.
I love so much of what you did
in this competition,
and I think you just needed
a little bit more time
to find your groove together.
[Kane] I commend what you've done
in two days. I think it's phenomenal,
and I wish you all the best of luck
in the future.
[both] Thank you.
You are so, so talented,
and I know you're gonna do
incredible things,
and I can't wait to watch.
I think there was a big part of me
that kind of lost the creative passion
that I used to have.
And this was exciting,
and this was just something
to prove to people
that if you want something,
follow what you believe in,
and you can make things happen.
Good night to you both.
Thank you.
I came on this competition
to, like, be creative.
I think that it was really nice
to remember, like, what kind of
things you can do.
[laughs]
And show people that, like,
you can look like this
and still be a serious person.
I mean, just because I'm small,
brown, half-Asian,
doesn't mean that I'm just,
like, a cute baby.
- Though I am also that.
- You are cute.
[laughs]
[Tan] Okay, you guys,
there are just four teams remaining.
But
from this point on,
your teams
are
over.
[laughs] Oh, God!
That's right. Your adventure as a team
ends right here.
Jeez.
[Alexa] From this point on,
your teammate is gonna become
your competition.
[trills]
- [Tan] And we're so excited,
- [Alexa] Very.
'cause we finally get
to see your individual voices. My gosh!
[laughs]
[laughs] So, Carli and Daniel,
on the night when you win the challenge
as a union,
suddenly we're blowing it apart.
How does that feel?
So, it's gonna be strange not working
with Carli because I do really enjoy it.
I just already said to her
that I'll be going over to her station
- and being like, "Stay calm, Carli."
- Aww!
- That's kind of how our partnership works.
- [laughing]
[laughs] Like, I keep her calm.
There'll be no texting the ex in this one.
- [laughing]
- [Alexa] You've gotta keep it clear.
[Tan] Angel, you look like
you're about to pass out. What's going on?
It absolutely makes me nervous.
We almost feel like twins or family.
Without each other,
it's like cutting one arm off.
I love that you love each other.
You can continue to love each other.
But fight for it, every one of you.
- We're ready.
- [Tan] You're ready?
We've been going head-to-head
for 20 years.
Yeah, you have!
[laughing]
Okay, Elizabeth, thank you so much.
Christopher, thank you for joining us.
Designers, next time we're back,
it's every man and woman for themselves.
- So let's hit it, let's go.
- Oh, it's gonna be good!
- Come on, kids!
- Oh, it's gonna be good!
Minju, turn that frown upside down.
- Ay-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi!
- Oh, dear!
We had to say goodbye there
to Claire and Adolfo.
We did, and we also had
to split up the teams.
- It was time.
- I know.
I'm worried they're gonna
split us up next.
No, don't worry about that.
But let's see. We'll find out.
- Just click that button.
- Click it.
Three, two, one.
