Next Of Kin (2018) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

1 - How many attacks are being planned? - Two.
I heard two.
Why don't you just go in and arrest them? They're waiting for the order.
If we alert the network, we may trigger an early attack.
- That's my brother! - What is he doing? Delivery.
Hey! Hey! Argh! There's a curse on our home.
All the men are broken.
Where's Danny now? You've lost him, haven't you? Haven't you?! This is Rafiq in a shop in Kilburn two days ago, buying ingredients for TATP explosives.
- (EXPLOSION) - Aaarrgh! - (SCREAMING) - My auntie, she's a doctor.
Just let me call her.
She'll come here.
She won't tell a soul.
- Mona's safety is our chief concern.
- So send her home.
You know she consented to help with this operation.
Do you know what happened to my brother? - Your nephew knows everything.
- I was there.
I saw it.
We need to abort this op before someone gets hurt! - She knew the risks going in.
- Jesus Christ, Vivien! If you hurt my wife, I will destroy you.
Down by the river, by the boats Where everybody goes to be alone Where you won't see any rising sun Down to the river we will run When by the water we drink to the dregs Look at the stones on the river bed I can tell from your eyes You've never been by the riverside Why is my client in custody? - You assured me there was no investigation.
- That was the advice I was given.
Who is he, this police contact of yours? You know I can't tell you that.
Just trust me, he's solid.
How can you tell? - We go back a long way.
- Who's the arresting officer? A DCI Barnes.
Have you come across her? Erm Yeah, I think she's in Counter Terror.
What was the charge? - No charge.
Yet.
- OK, well, that's something.
Let me just call her commander and see if I can get a sense of the lay of the land.
No.
No, it's too late for that.
So what's our move? (RECORDING DEVICE BEEPS) So for the tape, this is DCI Barnes and with me is DS Cummings.
(KNOCK AND DOOR OPENS) Interview suspended at 7:52.
Now, far be it from the Home Office to intervene in a police matter I have the right to hold a suspect for up to 14 days without charge.
- Or did I miss a memo? - This is an investment relationship.
The nuclear plant is worth thousands of jobs in a region of high unemployment.
So let's just take a breath.
That's more like it.
There have been payments of over eight million US dollars from a shell company to a charity held in trust by Sheikh Almasi, who, as we know, is the spiritual leader of Saif Al Ijaaz.
And this shell company is under whose directorship? The director's a front.
Khalid is controlling the money.
- You say.
- We have a probable eye witness.
You have a formal statement from this witness? We will have, once he's safely under police protection.
So why arrest Mr Khalid today, of all days, in the midst of what I gather is a highly sensitive terror operation? What do you want? Send Mr Khalid home.
- I'm not giving this up.
- Nor should you.
He will agree to stay in his house in Richmond.
You hold fire for 24 hours, give us a chance to review the evidence.
And Manning Point? We won't move on a deal until all parties are satisfied, yourself included.
You have my word.
Mm.
Who told you we were about to move on the deal, out of interest? Thanks for the tea.
(PHONE RINGS) - Hi.
- It's Sammi.
He's upset.
What's wrong? Locked himself up in the bathroom.
Says he's not coming out.
Until his mother's back home.
What Is she still not back? No, but maybe she knows something about Danish.
OK.
Just put him on, will you? (KNOCK AT DOOR) Open the door, darling.
It's your dad.
Sammi? Dad? Sammi, listen, darling.
You've got to pull yourself together a bit, OK? Look, Mum is fine.
Nan will take you to school.
Mum will be back in a couple of hours.
She's just at work.
Sammi? - Promise? - Yeah.
I promise.
(PHONE BUZZES) Insh'allah.
It's time.
- What's the target? - I don't know.
- What did he say? - Drive.
He will call again when he's sure.
- Sure of what? - No police.
OK, vehicles standing by.
I want 360 surveillance on that van.
Remain hidden.
Armed Response, hold all fire.
Abu, get up.
He's running a high temperature.
Can you move? I'm all right.
I can do this.
Look, I I promise you I I'll take good care of him.
Leave us here.
In two hours, I'll take him to the hospital.
I give you my word.
No.
No, I'm going.
- You can trust her.
- Shut up! DANNY: Come on.
He's done.
Let's go.
Let's go! Come on! You've got two hours.
Let's go.
(DOOR SLAMS) What are you waiting for? I forgot something.
(CLATTERING) No.
- Forgive me.
- No, please! Please! I have a son! Please! What have you done? The tracker's in place, ma'am.
We've got eyes on the van.
Suspect and witness are on the move.
Let's go! Where is she? Once Danish is home, these bad times will go away.
Danny? You still think the sun shines out of his arse.
Omar So he felt misunderstood.
What did he really have to moan about? You all think he's God's gift and shit.
Don't swear, Omar, please.
Why couldn't he just get a tattoo or a heroin habit, like anyone else? At least that way his dad would still be alive.
Don't say that.
You think I'm a loser.
- No, that's not - Yeah, you do.
But you know, even I'd have the common sense Someone invites you out to their Madrassa someone who hates everyone and everything, they're clearly not gonna teach you ping pong, are they? Danny's no innocent.
He knew.
He just chose not to open his eyes.
What did he say? Mum, look, he'll come round.
He's just stressed out, that's all.
You all seem so far away.
What are you talking about, Mum? I'm right here.
I should have been more strict.
Ammi.
It's the world that's bent out of place, not you.
And anyway, look at me, I turned out all right.
Hm! New flatmate? She's not my flatmate any more.
Why? Well It's been mad round here and you know you lot pretty full-on.
She's a fool.
You can do much better.
Thanks.
Come on, let's go get you a cappuccino.
What did you do to her? Don't worry.
She's fine where she is.
What do you mean, she's fine where she is? Don't worry and stay focused, OK? OK? Can we get this door opened? Armed police! Mona! Mona, it's Elliott.
Ma'am, she's alive.
Yeah, I've got you.
(GRUNTS) There you are, come on.
Sorry.
Get the medic, please! There you are.
Take her upstairs.
(HYPERVENTILATES) Ma'am.
Clever boy.
Get a me a trace on that number.
I need a log of all calls sent and received.
OFFICER: I'm on it, ma'am.
All right Dr Harcourt? My name's Joanne.
I'm a paramedic, OK? I just need to check you're fine.
Do you have any pain? - No? - Any injuries you're aware of? Can you talk? - No? - That's fine.
That's OK.
- OK - (MONA GRUNTS) That's absolutely fine.
- OK.
- OK.
Good.
Any pain here? - No.
- Or here? OK.
Good.
Thank you.
My My husband.
OK, just deep breaths now.
Breathe out And again.
All right.
(SOBS) All right.
Deep breaths.
Deep breaths.
You're going to be fine.
It's all right.
Your husband's on his way.
You're safe now.
You're safe.
(SNIFFLES) - Thank you Thank you.
- It's OK.
(DOOR BANGS) Mona? Oh What is it? - Where's Sammi? - He's in school.
What is this? Huh? Ammi, did I did I do the right thing? So, how's my client doing? Back home, thank God.
Well, that's good news.
Glorified house arrest.
He's not allowed to leave the premises.
I say Are you all right? Yeah, yeah, sure.
Well, anyway, Simon says bollocks to that.
What does that mean? Trust me.
You don't want to know on this one.
Oh, come on, Craig, just tell me.
All right.
Simon has made certain arrangements.
(PHONE BUZZES) - Guy? - It's Khalid.
- Yeah, they sent him home.
I know.
- No, no.
It's worse than that.
His business manager is organising a private jet from Portsgate airfield.
He's flying to Geneva in an hour.
I'm not kidding.
Thank you.
We'll take it from here.
(SIREN BLARES) And that's a nasty piece.
We'll pull it out, shall we? Carry on.
Just give it a little (SIRENS APPROACHING) Incoming call to the number we traced, ma'am.
(PHONE RINGS) As-salamu alaikum.
RAFIQ: Alaikumu as-salam.
- Are you on the move? - Yes.
On your own? No cars, no police? Nobody.
That's Rafiq.
It's got to be him.
I can't track him.
He's diverting the signal.
Brother, tell me.
Northlight Shopping Centre.
N19.
- The other two will be waiting for you there.
- I thought Change of plan.
It's better this way.
We will all be together.
Where is it? Northlight Shopping Centre.
One target, two or more devices.
What's the travelling time for the van? 33 minutes to Northlight.
Right.
We need to evacuate the shopping centre, shut down local access to public transport.
They're on their way.
MAN: What's going on? Hamoud? En route to the rendezvous at the shopping centre.
How do we slow down that van? What is this? Welcome to London.
KEITA: Manoeuvre complete.
The van is contained.
Armed response ready for the second cell at Northlight.
So Phone.
What? Hand it over.
All right.
Hoping to give me an upgrade? (CHUCKLES) He was afraid you might be recording us.
What? A team of police officers has just piled in to my employer's private home.
They claim they've been tipped off Khalid was getting on a plane to flee the country.
A private jet from Portsgate Airport.
- SIMON: DCI Barnes.
- Of course.
We're suing for harassment.
Right.
You played me.
How long were you leaking to Counter Terror? - Excuse me? - For God's sake, Guy.
Don't go down that route.
My employer is arrested, not one hour before we're due to sign off on Manning Point.
Confidentially, one month ahead of schedule.
Naturally I thought it must be someone in the Treasury working against us.
You're fired.
Just to be clear.
Disappointed.
Hey.
Hey! My wife sends a few grand to help her nephew get home and she is threatened with 14 years and yet this man, your employer, is sponsoring terrorists to the tune of millions! - That is beyond defamatory.
- Oh, be quiet.
Your lot and half the Treasury are lining up to suck him off! - Sanctimonious bollocks! - (PHONE RINGS) - What's the latest? - It's an ugly world out there, pal.
So you can shove that high and mighty bollocks back in the moral kindergarten you came from.
Because we're an independent trading nation and if we don't take his money, every other bugger from North American shale to God knows who will be hammering on his door.
Oh, and for the record.
You marry one of her lot, don't bitch and moan if you get your hands all dirty.
Urgh! Prick.
- Sammi! - Mum? TEACHER: Is everything OK, Mrs Harcourt? Yes, I just got a bit of an emergency.
- What are you doing? - I need to get you home, darling.
It's the middle of school.
Yeah, I know.
I'm sorry.
Where's Dad? Oh, he's He's fine.
He's fine.
Everybody's fine.
I just wanted to see you, that's all.
GIRL: Come on, Sammi! Go.
Go.
Sammi? Sammi? - Is it OK if I watch you? - Of course.
You're my mum.
I have a son.
Yeah? Pinky.
How old? Seven.
Where is he now? He's gone.
Hellfire missile.
14 dead people in the village.
And the Americans say they were all militants.
My family.
Militants.
MRS SHIRANI: Mona says Danish is trying to stop them.
There's got to be something else we can do.
No.
We can only hope and pray.
Ammi, I'm not praying! We need to go and find him and do something! - You know, when I was a girl - Ammi, please! Not now! Please listen.
I remember Mullah Aafiq coming to our house.
And my brother was so jealous because he pointed to me and said, "You are sacred".
You know why? Because it's the duty of all Muslims to protect women and children.
And even plants and animals.
I It It's crazy, I'm sorry.
Who are these men? How can they do this in the name of Allah? Who knows? That man on TV said the new wars will be fought not with weapons but with anger.
What about you? What's your story? Don't know.
I look back, I don't know how I got here.
Ma'am.
I've been through Rafiq's phone log.
He made a call at 9:04 this morning.
- Hamoud? - No, a different number.
- Our second cell.
- Must be.
We did manage to track his movements before they disconnected the phone, to here.
- Well, when was this? - 9:27.
That's completely the other end of town.
How do you get from there to Northlight in 20 minutes? He lies.
He lies to Hamoud.
The second cell isn't going to Northlight.
There's another target.
It's within a 24-minute radius which is Jesus Christ, that's over 50 square miles.
- Yeah, all right.
Just give me a minute.
- Excuse me.
Just give me a minute.
KHALID: Well Good for you, I say.
It's all right.
He's come to apologise.
Well, if you say so.
I feel this could all have been avoided.
I'm a family man, that's all, trying to do a little business.
Is that what you call it? I invest in a number of interests.
A dollar in this world, a dollar in the next.
Must be hard to keep up with it all.
- What do you want, Mr - Harcourt.
Right.
- I've come to give you some advice.
- Go on.
Whatever your little army of helpers might be telling you, this deal is hanging by a thread.
But if you don't want it to die, you need to give them a sign.
Of what? Loyalty.
Best of luck.
What can I possibly give them now? Information.
You're all right, mate.
I'll show myself out.
Any news on Rafiq's phone? The longer he's out there, the longer we put civilian lives at risk.
Move, move, move! Move, move, move, move, move! DANNY: It's OK.
The sheikh says, "Oh, Danish is a good boy with a pure heart.
" But I know.
I see you.
I see you.
Annabel Ghillies on line one.
Put her through.
Annabel.
I've just spoken to an associate of Muammar Khalid.
He wishes to stress that any transactions made recently in Pakistan are donations given in all innocence to charitable causes and nothing else.
Naturally.
He also stressed Khalid's commitment to British interests is beyond question.
A third party has passed on some alarming information regarding a potential terror attack in London.
Where? Temple Green! It's the other target.
We've got reliable intelligence that they're hiding out in a disused shop just off the high street.
Go.
- Armed police! - (CLAMOURING AND SHOUTING) Stay there! Stay there! OK.
Now let's take down the van.
Finally.
So what? We go in there, murder a bunch of innocent people? What kind of god wants that? What kind of god wants that? Oh, come on, man.
You told them! You betrayed us! (TYRES SCREECH) Come on! Out! Move! (DANNY WHIMPERS) He's got a knife! Drop the knife! Just let him go.
Put the knife down.
Drop the knife! I need the witness alive.
- Only take down Hamoud.
- I need the witness alive.
Put it down! Go away! - Go away or I'll kill him! - Take a shot.
Get me a fucking med pack now! Hey, look at me.
You're gonna be OK.
You're gonna be OK.
Get me a med pack! OK, Danny.
Danny, stay with me, mate.
His neck's slashed.
He's bleeding out.
Hey, Danny.
Danny! Stay with me.
Look at me.
Look at me, Danny! SAMMI: I still don't get what was so urgent.
I need an excuse to see my son? - You hate sport.
- I love sport.
No, you don't.
I love it when you do it.
Haven't you got, like, a job to go to? I do but not today.
Dad? Guy.
What is it? - Sammi, can you give us a minute? - OK.
DCI Barnes? Yes.
You're hereby suspended from duty pending a formal inquiry.
Please surrender your identification and entry pass.
- What formal inquiry? - What's going on? "Your failure to conduct a proper risk assessment in the events leading up to the death of DS Joe Townsend.
" - What? - My officer? Well, you can tell your friends in the Home Office that they can tar and feather me all they want but this investigation is not going away.
(NEWS ON TV) Greater London Police said it acted following intelligence of an imminent terror attack.
At this stage, the police are not releasing the names of the two dead men, though one is thought to be a UK citizen who was enrolled at a London university.
Both suspects were known to the security services.
The police do not believe the suspects were acting alone and have made several arrests across London this afternoon.
A police source said that the incident was triggered when a long-standing intelligence operation by the Greater London Police Counter Terrorism Unit produced a tip-off, warning of an imminent attack on London.
The Prime Minister has raised the national terror threat level to critical (VOICE ON TV FADES) (COMPUTER GAME BLEEPS) Hi.
Thanks, Sammi.
(APPLAUSE) (OVERLAPPING VOICES) We're not here to make excuses.
What they did, members members of our own families, it's shameful.
We need to talk to our children.
And we need to listen to them.
So that if they hear these voices whispering in their ear, we can stop them.
- ALL: Yes.
- So that next time, maybe Well, maybe next There won't be a next time.
