Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale (2024) s01e06 Episode Script
Episode 6
1
JULIA: They arrested Bea last night.
I can fix this. Julia.
Jake thinks Sarah might have cursed him.
What if we used that
notion to our advantage?
A witch cursed her! Witchcraft!
Heavenly Father, purge this curse!
I'm going to cast a spell to bring
everyone back to their senses.
I can't do it without you.
Maybe it's not such
a terrible idea for me
to take a break from the coven.
This is an act of colossal self-harm,
and I don't want any part of it.

- YOUNG IZZY [OOV]: Where is it?
- YOUNG HARPER [OOV]: Sh.
YOUNG IZZY [OOV]: Be quiet.
YOUNG IZZY [OOV]: Wow.
Can I see it?
YOUNG HARPER [OOV]: My mum says
In the wrong hands
this book is dangerous.
YOUNG IZZY [OOV]: Did you see that?
DOG WALKER: Come on. Come on.
What have you found there?
Oh, God, what is that?
No, Cocoa.
HARPER FENN: Hey, I got your message.
What's so important that we
couldn't talk about over the phone?
Has something happened?
IZZY PATERSON: I'm scared.
Everyone said that you killed him.
And that you would go
to prison. Or worse.
- HARPER FENN: I know.
- IZZY PATERSON: So, I was thinking maybe-maybe
I should say it was me.
Then you'd be in the clear.
Plus I'm not a witch so, there
would be no death penalty.
You're my best friend.
I'm not going to sit by
and watch you get blamed
for something that you didn't do.
HARPER FENN: Nobody did anything, Iz.
Dan tripped and broke his neck.
Okay.
IZZY PATERSON: Okay.
JULIA GARSTON: Thank you Ted.
I hope this doesn't cause you
any problems with DCI Knight.
TED BOLT: I'm in charge here.
You just take care of yourself.
JULIA GARSTON: Yeah. Thank you.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT:
You're letting Bea Garston
and Freddie McConnaughey go.
Attempted murder not
serious enough for you?
TED BOLT: Well, you can
bring 'em back at any point.
But don't you think your priority
should be the actual murder case?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: How's Jake doing?
TED BOLT: He'll be fine now
Mike Whithall's involved.
The sooner you arrest the
witch that put him there-oh,
and just so you know, all
my guys are off the case.
You're on your own detective.
DOCTOR [OOV]: Just so you know,

and thanks for telling me.
I appreciate it but we'll
talk about it later on, okay?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: [UNCLEAR CHAT]
MICHAEL WHITHALL: So, the word is out.
The unabridged tape.
Without Dan here who's
in line to take the flak?
Hm? Us.
NURSE: Professor.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: So, what do we do?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Build on what
you've done. Keep the focus on Sarah.
Well, she cursed Jake, didn't she?
The sicker he gets the worse she looks.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: We are not
in control of how sick he
what did you do?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Changed his
meds, added a few side effects.
- ABIGAIL WHITHALL: But if you get found out.
- MICHAEL WHITHALL: I'm a professor of virology, Abi.
The Bolts have specifically
asked me to take over treatment.
Who's gonna challenge me?
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: But
you'll just make him look worse.
You won't actually ?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Leave
me to deal with this.
Okay?
SARAH FENN: How did you ?
Oh, oh.
You said you wouldn't help me.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: With the magic, no.
I wasn't gonna let you
die by the hillside was I?
So, did it work?
SARAH FENN [OOV]: No, I failed.
I need to try something-uh, oh.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Whoa.
I think you need to rest.
SARAH FENN: No, I can't give up.
MAGGIE [VOICEMAIL]:
Sarah. It's DCI Knight.
Just wanted to let you know that
new evidence has come to light
which corroborates your
daughter's rape allegation.
Obviously, I've spoken to Harper
but call me if you'd
like to speak further.
SARAH FENN: Oh, thank goodness.
Oh, Harper. I have no idea where she is.
You know what? Forget
hands off parenting.
I need to see her.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Sure, but how?
SARAH FENN: Locator spell.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Wait,
what? That's actually a thing.
SARAH FENN: Hm-mm.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Okay, but I'm staying.
Just in case you blow yourself up again.
- PIERRE MARTINEAU: Are you okay?
- SARAH FENN: Yeah.
The locator spell. It's not working.
Can you-can you just go get the candle?
I need to try something really basic.
SARAH FENN: Oh.
What have I done?
I've lost my magic.
I knew it could happen.
I knew it, but I
I didn't want to believe
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Maybe-maybe
you're still in shock.
SARAH FENN: No, you-you saw that.
You saw what I couldn't do.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: It's
Izzy. She needs to see me
SARAH FENN: Then go.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Okay, I'll be back.
Are you sure?
SARAH FENN: Please.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: How's he doing?
MARY ANN BOLT: Not good.
His fever's up. Breathing's
bad. He's delirious.
JAKE BOLT: Dan
Dan.
MARY ANN BOLT: Sweetheart.
Can you help him?
MICHAEL WHITHALL:
We're doing all we can.
The problem is that even
science is at a disadvantage
when there's other forces at play.
Now, what appeared to be
a typical case of Glandular
Fever has now developed
into something more sinister.
I'm getting reports of further cases.
MARY ANN BOLT: Oh God, what's happening?
Are we all cursed?
MICHAEL WHITHALL [OOV]: Well well,
that's not for me to say.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Izzy, sweetheart?
Hey, what's happened?
What is it, what is it?
Why are you so scared?
IZZY PATERSON: Something you don't know.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Obviously I'm not here.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: I see that.
But just to be clear, you are
actively disobeying orders.
And if Ted finds out?
RYAN GREENHOFF: The end
of my glittering career.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: You're
absolutely sure about this?
RYAN GREENHOFF: Found something.
I thought you should see it.
So, I've kept tracking
the kids' social medias,
especially the Dan
Whithall tribute pages,
in case anything new showed up.
And today
this came in.
Who does that look like to you?
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Izzy Paterson?
- RYAN GREENHOFF: Izzy Paterson.
Who was ill in bed at home
and no one named her as being there.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Well, I
guess it's not unheard of.
Kid sneaks out and
wants to be at a party
where all her mates are at.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Yeah, but
notice where she's heading.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Okay.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Look at the
time code on the picture.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Less than a
minute before the time of Daniel's fall.
Good work.
IZZY PATERSON: [COUGHS]
BRIDGET: Izzy. Go to bed.
You should never have
gone out this morning.
IZZY PATERSON: I'm fine.
BRIDGET: Seriously, if
that fever kicks in again
you're in trouble.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT [OOV]: Hi,
can I come in for a moment?
BRIDGET [OOV]: Yeah.
But I haven't got long.
My mum is ill. I'm
just heading over there.
BRIDGET: You know, two of my girls
and work had the same thing.
Oh God, they're saying
that it's, you know,
they think that it's
witchcraft, which is insane.
Dr Clarke has said it's glandular fever.
I mean, what if these stories take hold?
I'm in Sarah's coven.
She's my best friend.
I've had people cancel on
me. People are ghosting me.
I mean, what if they think
that I'm somehow involved?
And now Izzy's poorly again.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: It's
actually her I wanted to see.
BRIDGET: Oh, God.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: No,
just wanted to check
- a couple of details if that's okay.
- BRIDGET: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
She was here a minute
ago. Doodling away.
Do you know, I-I'm gonna
see if she's up for talking.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Thanks.
BRIDGET: Izzy?
BRIDGET: In there.
Oh, she's gone. I'll just go and check.
IZZY PATERSON: [COUGHS]
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: So,
now we know Izzy was at the party.
What concerns me
is this.
RYAN GREENHOFF: That
thing at the warehouse.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Right?
So, why is Izzy making drawings of it?
RYAN GREENHOFF: And
if she was at the party
and claiming not to be
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: I
need to talk to someone
who understands these symbols.
SARAH FENN: Everything okay with Izzy?
PIERRE MARTINEAU: She was upset,
but we-we talked it through.
She's fine.
What about you?
SARAH FENN: I've
definitely lost my magic.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: But it will come back.
SARAH FENN: I don't know.
What if it doesn't?
If I'm not a witch,
what do I call myself?
How do I earn a living? Like,
my whole life, my heritage
it's been about helping people.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Sarah.
You
who you are is not just
about spells and potions.
That stuff is just a tiny
part of what makes you amazing.
- At least to me.
- SARAH FENN: Oh Pierre. You're a mate.
You're biased. But I,
I don't need amazing.
I just need power.
Enough to protect Harper from
what's coming down the line.
Serafina, oh, she'd be horrified.
After everything she taught me.
My amulet.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: When was
the last time you saw it?
SARAH FENN: The Sunstone Rite.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: How's Jake?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Exactly
where he needs to be.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Michael,
promise me you won't go too far.
I feel so sorry for him.
He was besotted with Dan
MICHAEL WHITHALL: And Dan despised him.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Don't.
Dan wasn't like that.
He was sweet and kind
and thoughtful and loving.
But something happened to him.
Oh my God. That's it.
What you did to him.
Don't do anything
else. Put the word out.
Get everyone to the square for midday.
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Good luck with that.
Quite a few people showed virus symptoms
after the last gathering.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Even
better. We can use that.
MICHAEL WHITHALL [OOV]: To do what?
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Turn this
whole thing on its head.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: So, the amulet,
could it help restore your powers?
SARAH FENN: Maybe, maybe not.
But it's a gift from
Serafina. I have to find it.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: I'll help.
SARAH FENN: Just drop me there.
I don't want anyone
else mixed up in this.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Thanks
for agreeing to see us
again, Professor Maloney.
Can I show you something?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Sure.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: These
were drawn by Harper's best friend.
Are you able to tell us what they are?
So, you know them.
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY:
They're known as the Old Signs.
They come from a book of spells
called the Starcross Grimoire.
It's over three centuries old
and banned.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Oh. Banned?
Why?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY:
Because a book of that power
in the wrong hands.
RYAN GREENHOFF: So,
this sign for instance,
what's that mean?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Why do you ask?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Uh, because
we've seen it somewhere before.
ANNA DAO [OOV]: Going live
five, four, three, two
Discovered here in the early hours
this morning by a local dog walker.
Branches hung with
red wool and crystals.
The ground beneath is covered
in blood and sinister markings
have been etched into
the rocks and the soil.
ANNA DAO [ON TV]: Locals
are claiming that the mystery virus
currently plaguing the town
is connected to the site
and are strongly suggesting
that dark magic is at play.
Another site has also been
discovered at Eve's rock.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: So, we
know that Isobel Paterson
has been sketching signs from this book,
Starcross, which matched the very sign
we saw at the warehouse at
the place where someone died.
My question is, could
Izzy have witch ancestry?
Witch genes lying dormant
that resurfaced in her?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Yeah.
If the last witch was four,
five generations back.
Family today might not
know its magical heritage.
RYAN GREENHOFF: How did
Izzy learn these symbols
from Starcross? I mean,
the obvious question is,
does Sarah Fenn possess a copy?
SARAH FENN [OOV]: Damn it.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: So,
say Sarah has a copy?
Could she have secretly tutored Izzy?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Never.
These signs are extremely dangerous.
No one would teach them to a child.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Clarify
extremely dangerous.
Um, what's this for instance?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: This
is connected to ideas of concealment.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And this?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY:
That suggests mayhem, ruin.
RYAN GREENHOFF: So, if Izzy
cast that at the warehouse-
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: It
would account for the fire.
But, that's assuming she was capable.
RYAN GREENHOFF: And if
Sarah didn't teach her-
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Could
she have taught herself?
Could Harper have given
her access to the book
without realising how
dangerous it could be?
PROFESSOR SHULA
MALONEY: Oh, do you mind?
That sign. I can't look at it.
It's the sigil most
witches dread having to use.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: What does it mean?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Destruction.
ALBIE GARSTON: Hey.
JULIA GARSTON: Do you
know what this is about?
BRIDGET: No, not a clue.
Abi's ignoring my
calls. Are you alright?
JULIA GARSTON: Sure. Apart from
the fact that my daughter hates me.
My husband's looking for an exit
and, uh, I've let down
one of my closest friends.
BRIDGET: And I haven't?
Sarah asked for my help on something
that really mattered
and I sent her away.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: So, what now?
Not another vigil for Dan?
ALBIE GARSTON: You bet it's for Dan.
And for every decent
member of this community.
Even you can't be blind
to what's going on.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Please, enlighten me.
ALBIE GARSTON: Witch
crime. Illegal magic.
People's lives devastated.
No, please Julia, it's okay.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: You really
are under a spell, huh?
Is that what Abi taught you to say?
ALBIE GARSTON: You've always
been obsessed with that witch bitch.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: And you've
always been a philandering prick.
She did you a favour.
- ALBIE GARSTON: Fuck you Martineau!
- PIERRE MARTINEAU: Are you out of your mind?
Are you
YOUNG MALE: Oh my God.
JULIA GARSTON: Albie, stop.
Don't, don't, don't, please.
BRIDGET: Stop, please.
Yeah not worth it.
- PIERRE MARTINEAU: That was free.
- BRIDGET: Okay. Not the time. Not the time.
[APPLAUSE]
- FEMALE [OOV]: We're here for you Abigail.
- FEMALE [OOV]: We're all with you.
MALE [OOV]: We're with you.
TED BOLT: Many of you will
have seen the TV reports.
Evidence of dark magic being used
at various sites around Sanctuary.
Coincidence? No.
Just as a mysterious
virus spreads amongst us.
Three of my men, three of my men,
four of Dan's team
mates are in hospital.
And my son, Jake, here,
he's really struggling.
I used to think magic was benign.
I've consulted Sarah Fenn myself.
I've had my issues. Yeah.
With alcohol. I admit it.
I'm human. I trusted her. She
used my weakness against me.
She tried blackmailing
me in getting our Jakey
to retract his statement.
And when I refused,
she put a curse on him.
FEMALE [OOV]: Witchcraft. Witchcraft.
TED BOLT: And now he's
struggling to breathe.
He's delirious.
And I don't know what to do.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Where are you?
SARAH [OVER THE PHONE]: Back
in my consulting room. Why?
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Abi's
called a meeting in the square.
Don't know why, but I
wouldn't hang around.
Go home, throw some clothes in
a bag and I'll be round in 15.
PIERRE [OVER THE PHONE]: We
need to get you somewhere safe.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: I'm
sure you've all heard
the allegation Harper Fenn
made on TV about my son Daniel.
YOUNG MALE: Disgusting.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: It's the most
appalling thing a mother can hear.
So, you probably think I'm
going to stand here and deny it.
Well, I'm not going to
because it's true.
YOUNG GIRL: Oh, my God. She admitted it.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: For six
years I've kept a terrible secret.
And I want to share it now
because I see how wrong I've been.
How false loyalty led
me to protect a criminal.
And cause irreparable damage
to my son and to others.
I was once a non-magical
member of Sarah Fenn's coven.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: I
let myself be persuaded
to partake in an illegal
spell which called upon dark,
forbidden magic to do
an unspeakable thing.
There are others here today
who took part in that spell.
WOMAN: Who? Who?
And others, including my husband,
who witnessed it in all its monstrosity.
Six years ago my son Daniel
fell from an upstairs window.
He broke his neck and died.
In my grief I was beyond all reason.
Sarah Fenn saw my pain and
instead of comforting me
she asked me if she could resurrect him.
- FEMALE [OOV]: He's a liar.
- FEMALE: Lie!
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: What
would you have done?
In that moment I would've done anything.
And so I agreed to participate,
to let Sarah Fenn perform
her darkest piece of sorcery.
At the end of the
ritual he opened his eyes
and my darling boy came back to life.
Back, but different. He looked the same.
But-but every now and again
something took hold of him.
A darkness, a need to hurt.
And every time he'd come to me and weep
and ask what was wrong with him
and how he could make it stop.
Fuck, she's clever.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: I
couldn't tell him what I'd done.
I couldn't admit that in my weakness
I'd allowed Sarah Fenn to inflict dark,
forbidden magic which
turned my sweet loving child
into an abusive predator
at the mercy of vile
urges he couldn't control.
FEMALE [OOV]: You're a liar!
FEMALE [OOV]: He was a rapist!
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: For
which he was not responsible!
FEMALE: Yes he was!
TED BOLT: It was witchcraft.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: For which
Sarah Fenn alone is responsible!
CROWD: [SHOUTING & CHANTING]
POLICE OFFICER: You have to leave.
Get out! Move!
RUBY: To be honest, we don't
really care that Dan was bewitched.
FARIHA: We just care about what he did.
RUBY: He assaulted us. Loads of us.
- And we're not gonna let that drop.
- MICHAEL WHITHALL: Now, let me stop you right there.
FARIHA: We've all made
statements to the police.
There's gonna be an investigation.
MICHAEL WHITHALL: You heard.
This isn't going away.
So now we've got to
really turn up the heat
because otherwise
we're fucking skewered.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Are we though?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Abigail,
what are you not seeing?
This is a straight tossup
between Dan and Jake.
Which of them matters to you most?
Okay. Here's what we have to do
PIERRE MARTINEAU [OOV]: Sarah!
PIERRE MARTINEAU: We have to go now!
DCI Knight got in touch.
She's got somewhere safe you can go.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Ryan,
meet me at mine ASAP.
PIERRE MARTINEAU [OOV]:
Go, go, go, go, go, go!
YOUNG MALE [OOV]: Gather
as many people as you can!
TED BOLT: Hello.
NURSE [OVER THE PHONE]: Mr Bolt,
I'm ringing from the hospital.
- TED BOLT: What, has something happened?
- NURSE [OVER THE PHONE]: Professor Whithall wants you
- to come in urgently.
- TED BOLT: Right. I'm on me way.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: You
should be okay here for now.
But I suggest you think about
getting away from Sanctuary.
SARAH FENN: If I intend to,
and I'll be taking Harper with me.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: You can't be
at the mercy of these insane people.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Especially Abigail.
The grief, it's deranged her.
At the gathering she was ranting
on about her resurrected kid.
That's impossible, right?
Wait a minute.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT [FLASHBACK]:
Would someone like to explain
what happened?
JULIA [FLASHBACK]: We
heard something fall,
ran inside and Dan was at
the bottom of the stairs.
ABIGAIL [FLASHBACK]: Not
moving. I just screamed.
MALE [FLASHBACK]: Then
very quickly he came too.
ABIGAIL [FLASHBACK]:
Sat up, started talking.
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT [FLASHBACK]: Any injuries?
- MICHAEL WHITHALL [FLASHBACK]: I checked him over,
but no, not even a bruise.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: He was actually dead?
SARAH FENN: Yeah.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Sarah. Don't.
SARAH FENN: He had no pulse.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: But that can happen.
People do get revived.
SARAH FENN: I did a spell.
I did it because Abi begged me.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT:
Does that happen often?
You performing illegal spells
because your friends beg you to?
SARAH FENN: Harper's right.
I'm too soft.
I can't bear to see them suffer. So
I bend the rules.
And everything that's
happened, maybe I asked for it.
Because I did break the law. I
resurrected a boy who was dead
and Abigail has every right to hate me
because the process it
must have damaged him
and turned him into the
monster who raped my daughter.
And that's down to me.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: No. No, no.
Your spell didn't change him.
He was always like that.
This morning Izzy told me,
Daniel he, he hurt her too.
SARAH FENN [OOV]: What?
PIERRE MARTINEAU: The day he fell,
before he fell he came into Izzy's room
- and started touching her.
- SARAH FENN: Oh no.
PIERRE MARTINEAU: She
tried to push him away
and in the struggle the window was open.
He fell out.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Is that a
copy of the Starcross Grimoire?
May I see it?
Is this something Izzy
could have ever seen?
PIERRE MARTINEAU: Izzy?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT [OOV]: Did
Harper know where it was kept?
SARAH FENN [OOV]: Yeah, but
she knew not to touch it.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT:
Ryan, can I have a word?
- TED BOLT: Thank you, thank you.
- MARY ANN BOLT: Oh.
TED BOLT: Okay, come here.
You're alright.
- TED BOLT: Mike, how is he?
- MICHAEL WHITHALL: Sorry. We're doing all we can,
but he seems to be getting worse.
TED BOLT: Hey Jakey.
Your dad's here and your mum.
Keep fighting little man.
MARY ANN BOLT: Stay with us.
Don't leave us. We love you.
TED BOLT [OOV]: Stay with me, son.
- MARY ANN BOLT: No, no! No!
- TED BOLT [OOV]: Jake!
- MICHAEL WHITHALL: Crash call!
- TED BOLT: Please, can you help him?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Crash call!
TED BOLT [OOV]: Stay with us, son.
MICHAEL WHITHALL: We're
gonna have to clear the room.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: I really
wish I hadn't heard all that
because Izzy's given herself
another motive to kill Dan.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Not only
the rape of her best friend.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: But her
own assault when she was a kid.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Sarah's
basically admitted Izzy
had access to Starcross.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And the
symbols in her notebook.
Concealment, destruction.
There's no disputing the intent.
RYAN GREENHOFF: She
was at the warehouse.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Oh fuck.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Is it ?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Over? Yeah.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Oh, God.
MICHAEL WHITHALL: It had to be done.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Did it?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: To
nail it once and for all.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: [SOBS]
RYAN GREENHOFF: If Sarah used dark magic
to resurrect her best friend's son,
she'll go to prison and be
banned from using magic for life.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And if Izzy Paterson
used dark magic to kill
the boy who abused her
and raped her best friend,
she'll face the death penalty.
But, what if magic wasn't used at all?
RYAN GREENHOFF: But it
was. Morgan confirmed it.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: But, just suppose,
what if Morgan was willing to set aside
that part of the evidence?
RYAN GREENHOFF: That'd been
negligent and highly illegal.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: But
they might argue that
if it came down to saving a naive kid,
self-taught, untutored in witchcraft,
possibly ignorant of the
darkness they'd conjured.
RYAN GREENHOFF: And
maybe they'd ask if there's
such a thing as natural justice
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And
do we want to serve that
or do we want to serve a law
that is actively biased against witches?
- MALE [OOV]: Are you ready to go?
- MALE [OOV]: Okay, go grab some stuff.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Get the car.
Bring it round the back.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: We need to
go now. We've been followed.
- SARAH FENN [OOV]: What about Harper?
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT [OOV]: I know where I can find her.
PIERRE MARTINEAU [OOV]:
You go with DCI Knight,
I'll try and head 'em off.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Go, go.
SARAH FENN: How long have you known?
Where Harper's been hanging out?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Not long.
I kind of assumed you knew.
SARAH FENN: I guess we
have more pressing concerns,
like trying not to get arrested.
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Remy?
- REMY [OVER THE PHONE]: Do you have the Fenns in custody?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: I have Sarah with me
and we're on our way to collect-
REMY [OVER THE PHONE]:
Fetch them in immediately.
Everything in Sanctuary
has just blown up.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Tell me about it.
Thanks to Abigail Whithall
whipping up hysteria.

and banned.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Oh. Banned?

ANNA DAO [ON TV]: Locals

Another site has also been

DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: So, we
know that Isobel Paterson
has been sketching signs from this book,
Starcross, which matched the very sign
we saw at the warehouse at
the place where someone died.
My question is, could
Izzy have witch ancestry?
Witch genes lying dormant
that resurfaced in her?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Yeah.
If the last witch was four,
five generations back.
Family today might not
know its magical heritage.
RYAN GREENHOFF: How did
Izzy learn these symbols
from Starcross? I mean,
the obvious question is,
does Sarah Fenn possess a copy?
SARAH FENN [OOV]: Damn it.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: So,

Could she have secretly tutored Izzy?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: Never.
These signs are extremely dangerous.

extremely dangerous.
Um, what's this for instance?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY: This
is connected to ideas of concealment.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And this?
PROFESSOR SHULA MALONEY:
That suggests mayhem, ruin.
RYAN GREENHOFF: So, if Izzy
cast that at the warehouse-
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: It
would account for the fire.
But, that's assuming she was capable.
RYAN GREENHOFF: And if
Sarah didn't teach her-
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Could
she have taught herself?
Could Harper have given
her access to the book
without realising how
dangerous it could be?
PROFESSOR SHULA
MALONEY: Oh, do you mind?
That sign. I can't look at it.
It's the sigil most
witches dread having to use.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: What does it mean?

TED BOLT [OOV]: Stay with us, son.
MICHAEL WHITHALL: We're
gonna have to clear the room.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: I really
wish I hadn't heard all that
because Izzy's given herself
another motive to kill Dan.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Not only
the rape of her best friend.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: But her
own assault when she was a kid.
RYAN GREENHOFF: Sarah's
basically admitted Izzy
had access to Starcross.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And the
symbols in her notebook.
Concealment, destruction.
There's no disputing the intent.
RYAN GREENHOFF: She
was at the warehouse.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Oh fuck.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Is it ?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: Over? Yeah.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Oh, God.
MICHAEL WHITHALL: It had to be done.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: Did it?
MICHAEL WHITHALL: To
nail it once and for all.
ABIGAIL WHITHALL: [SOBS]
RYAN GREENHOFF: If Sarah used dark magic
to resurrect her best friend's son,
she'll go to prison and be
banned from using magic for life.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And if Izzy Paterson
used dark magic to kill
the boy who abused her
and raped her best friend,
she'll face the death penalty.
But, what if magic wasn't used at all?
RYAN GREENHOFF: But it
was. Morgan confirmed it.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: But, just suppose,
what if Morgan was willing to set aside
that part of the evidence?
RYAN GREENHOFF: That'd been
negligent and highly illegal.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: But
they might argue that
if it came down to saving a naive kid,
self-taught, untutored in witchcraft,
possibly ignorant of the
darkness they'd conjured.
RYAN GREENHOFF: And
maybe they'd ask if there's
such a thing as natural justice
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And
do we want to serve that
or do we want to serve a law
that is actively biased against witches?
- MALE [OOV]: Are you ready to go?
- MALE [OOV]: Okay, go grab some stuff.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Get the car.
Bring it round the back.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: We need to
go now. We've been followed.
- SARAH FENN [OOV]: What about Harper?
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT [OOV]: I know where I can find her.
PIERRE MARTINEAU [OOV]:
You go with DCI Knight,
I'll try and head 'em off.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Go, go.
SARAH FENN: How long have you known?
Where Harper's been hanging out?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Not long.
I kind of assumed you knew.
SARAH FENN: I guess we
have more pressing concerns,
like trying not to get arrested.
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Remy?
- REMY [OVER THE PHONE]: Do you have the Fenns in custody?
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: I have Sarah with me
and we're on our way to collect-
REMY [OVER THE PHONE]:
Fetch them in immediately.
Everything in Sanctuary
has just blown up.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Tell me about it.
Thanks to Abigail Whithall
whipping up hysteria.
REMY [OVER THE PHONE]: I doubt
hysteria is what killed Jacob Bolt.
SARAH FENN: Jake's dead?
JONNY MALONEY: You never even asked?
HARPER FENN: Oh. Oh, is that weird?
That I've got his DNA and
I don't even know his name.
JONNY MALONEY: Does your mum know?
HARPER FENN: She never mentions him?
Maybe one day I'll ask.
REMY [OVER THE PHONE]:
Sarah is being blamed
for the outbreak of this
virus and Jake's death.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: That has
nothing to do with witchcraft.
SARAH FENN: There she is.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: You need
to understand what's at play here.
Pure hysteria.
SARAH FENN: Harper?
- JONNY MALONEY: Good luck.
- HARPER FENN: Thanks.
REMY [OVER THE PHONE]: Ted
Bolt's requested to come in
- and deescalate the situation.
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: His son has just died.
- Do you really think ?
- REMY [OVER THE PHONE]: He's made the case,
it's his manor. His
guys are sticking by him.
So, what I need is for
you to bring the Fenns in.
DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: And
what I need is for you to back me.
REMY [OVER THE PHONE]:
Bring the woman in.
SARAH FENN: We have to leave right now.
HARPER FENN: Why? What happened?
I saw the stuff on the news.
SARAH FENN: No, it's
gone way beyond that.
Jake Bolt just died
and they're blaming me.
- HARPER FENN: What?
- SARAH FENN: And if we don't get out now,
we might not survive.
So, I need you to trust me
to make decisions for both of us.
With or without magic.
HARPER FENN: Why without magic?
SARAH FENN: I tried a spell.
It-it didn't work out and I,
I lost my powers.
HARPER FENN: How can that happen mum?
SARAH FENN: It happened. It's hideous
and I can't think about it
now. We just need to move.
HARPER FENN: Okay, wait.
SARAH FENN: No, no,
Harper. We have no time.
HARPER FENN: Close your eyes.
- SARAH FENN: What?
- HARPER FENN: Close them.
SARAH FENN: Oh. Where did you?
HARPER FENN: I found
it at your spell site.
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Get down.
- SARAH FENN [OOV]: Stop.
HARPER FENN: Mum, no.
- SARAH FENN: No.
- HARPER FENN: Mum!
SARAH FENN: Take your
hands off my daughter.
HARPER FENN: Mum!
- TED BOLT: Bring them in.
- DCI MAGGIE KNIGHT: Have you lost your mind?
What the fuck was that?
They're not even under arrest.
They're being taken to a safe house.
TED BOLT: If you had arrested
those witches weeks ago
my son would still be alive.
WOMAN: What's happening?
ABIGAIL: What should have
happened a long time ago?
A reckoning.
This town needs cleansing.
Evil has just been
festering in our midst.
I swear your mother will pay.
SARAH: You've become a monster.
Does anyone here still
doubt their guilt?
[CROWD SHOUTING]
And if you accept their guilt
what sentence do you pass?
