Next in Fashion (2020) s01e07 Episode Script
Activewear
[Alexa Chung] Ninety-eight.
Oh, 99.
[chewing] One-hundred!
- I did it, I ate it all!
- [grunts]
[panting] Welcome back to Next in Fashion.
Wait, what's this challenge again?
- Activewear.
- Oh.
- Come on.
- Yeah, give me a hand.
- [grunts]
- Come on, big guy. I'm so proud of us.
[theme music playing]
[Angel and Minju speak Korean] Goodbye.
[laughing]
I'm really gonna miss working with Carli.
She pushed me as a designer,
and she brought out the best in me.
Carli's absolutely livid.
I'm gonna kill him.
It's the first time
that I'm gonna be solo,
and yeah, I'm feeling fine about it.
I'm used to working alone.
That's how I work in the company,
so it doesn't bother me.
Agh! Angel!
- We can shout!
- [exclaims]
I was so happy, working with Angel,
because every time, like, I work with her,
we depend on each other.
Push and pull, you know.
- Guys.
- [Marco] Get in the picture.
- [laughing]
- [camera shutter clicking]
[Minju] And I got lots of support by her.
It's more fear than excited.
[Tan France panting]
What is happening?
I think we're giving away the challenge.
Come on.
- Morning, everyone.
- [Alexa] Hi, everyone!
Good to see you all.
Come on, gather round.
There are eight of you designers left.
And you're about to compete
for the first time
as individuals.
Because as you all know,
only one of you will be the winner
of $250,000,
courtesy of Net A Porter,
and be named Next in Fashion.
Net A Porter is also offering the winner
an opportunity to retail
their designs on their site.
It's time for your next challenge.
Yeah! I mean, I hope you're all okay
with working up a sweat.
Because today's challenge
is actually all about
Can you believe it?
Activewear!
Yeah, that's right.
It's not just for the gym.
It's also for the school drop-off,
brunch and even Netflix and chill.
- Ooh!
- [laughing]
[Alexa] So, Charles,
the poster boy for activewear.
I presume you like to go to the gym often.
Well, a few times a week, maybe.
I gym six times a week.
- [grunting]
- So even if I've never made it before,
I know what it needs to have
in order to function.
- Daniel.
- Hey.
I assume by what you wear most days
that your line's all activewear.
Totally.
[laughing]
When I work out, I wear a silk shirt,
tailored trousers.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Some kind of cummerbund around the waist.
This is outside of my comfort zone,
so I'm a bit nervous for this challenge.
[Tan] We want to see
all of you create activewear designs
that are both fashion and function.
And we will be joined
by a special guest judge,
who is an expert in all things activewear.
I mean, I bet at least two of you
are wearing their shoes right now.
Joining us tomorrow
is design guru and fearless leader,
Josefine Aberg from Adidas.
Adidas is a huge empire,
and Josefine knows her stuff,
so you guys better bring it.
For your first individual challenge,
you can choose whether you're designing
for a man or a woman,
and we're asking you
to make just one look.
[laughing]
- You're happy about that?
- The relief on Angelo's face!
[laughing]
I am very happy to have only one look.
Without Charles,
I have not the technical skills.
Charles teach me the tailoring,
the perfection of the construction.
I feel alone. [groans, laughs]
Alexa and I definitely got our workout
this morning, 'cause we made sure
that the closet is fully stocked
for your activewear challenge.
- [designers gasp]
- [Alexa] Ooh, look at her shine!
Look at her glow. She's ready!
[Tan] We've added some extra knit,
some extra mesh.
We've also added some fun tools
for you to personalize your looks.
The digital printer is back,
and once again,
you can create your own prints.
The world is your oyster.
- Are you ready?
- Yeah.
- Yes.
- Your activewear challenge
starts-- ooh!
[both] Now!
Great, great, great, great, great, great.
Okay.
[laughs] Activewear.
- [Alexa] It's a true design challenge
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
because it's practicality, functionality
and aesthetics.
- Mmm!
- I picked it off the ground.
- Oh, girl, take it. Jesus Christ!
- I rolled it down.
You're considering fabrics
like never before.
- [Alexa] Yeah, totally.
- [Tan] Are they fast drying?
Is it going to be breathable?
It's not just, "Does it look pretty?"
[Alexa] Yeah.
[Tan] Not only set them a challenge
that's complicated, we've split 'em up.
It's gonna be so interesting
to see how they work alone.
Ah, okay.
This is really nerve-racking,
'cause activewear isn't my field.
It never will be.
Activewear isn't fashion.
I don't know anybody
that wears spandex anymore.
Carli is a really amazing designer,
but also, she has a really hot temper.
Oh [bleeps] it! I'm so stupid.
Sometimes that would be a distraction.
They're very fitted, babe. I did tell you.
- Leave it, leave it.
- I'll just let you do it.
Okay. [grunts]
[Daniel]
She can kind of get in her own head.
I already feel like she is today.
I'm worried about her.
This tracing is really bad.
I'm very grateful to Charles.
He teach me a lot.
But today,
I have the real chance
to show the people who I am.
I'm going to make my own print
because I'm creating swimwear.
I love snorkeling, eight hours for a day
when I'm on a holiday,
and fishes will be not afraid about me.
So, my activewear look is inspired
by my experience as a dancer.
From the age of four to the age of 12,
I've been dancing ballet
and Chinese national dance as well.
So I'm going to create a bodysuit,
plus a detachable skirt,
and that skirt is going to be
super colorful,
and when she walks, she definitely has
a different silhouette out of it.
[Marco] As a costume designer,
I do a lot of music videos,
films, but I also work for the circus.
What the contortionists need
is completely different
from what the trapeze artists need.
I had to learn how
to respond to body movement.
[whirs]
The challenge is to create something
that you can move in,
something that breathes.
So I'll be making a wrestling singlet
with a backless hoodie
out of a lightweight neoprene fabric.
A wrestling singlet is one of the most
universal activewear pieces
that you can create.
- Carli.
- Hi.
- How are you getting on?
- Okay.
It's really hard,
'cause I'm not a sport person.
I'm not used to working with these types
of fabric.
- [Alexa] What's the theme?
- It's kind of general sporty.
There's a basketball top
with the sleeve that poppers off,
so it becomes something sporty,
and then the trouser that poppers off
and becomes a basketball short.
I want it to look like a suit.
I get that.
I'm trying to keep
the structural element in it,
- because that is very me.
- Yeah.
How are you feeling about timing
at the moment?
I'm quite worried about it.
'Cause I've got so many pieces to it,
I'm like, "Oh, no, what have I done?"
- You got this, come on.
- All right, good luck, my love.
Thank you. See you later.
[Angelo] Oh, my God, I love it.
Wow.
I'm making a bodysuit right now.
I love the stretch fabric,
but it's not crazy stretch,
so it's going to hold the body shape
really, really well.
- [Ashton] Marco, can I get your eyes?
- Yeah.
So, it's gonna ombre.
Does that look fairly color corrected?
The hues are so slow.
I think it's fine.
I'm not active person, right?
I don't like exercise outside.
I wear activewear when I sleep.
That's why I think
I'm very into video games
[laughing]
and my two cats Noonnoo and Aku.
- They are so warm and fuzzy.
- [yelps]
- They make me really relax.
- [cat meows]
Since I love video games,
I'm making a superhero-inspired look.
It's like a swimsuit,
and I'm gonna make a cape.
Superheroes, they are so active, no?
They're the most active people
in the world!
She flies, she jumps, she saves the world.
Like, with this dress,
everything's possible.
[laughs]
- Ashton.
- Hi, guys.
Hello. My God, that's a surprise,
you're using black.
It goes to white!
- Oh, it's ombre.
- Jesus!
[Alexa] Oh, nice.
[Ashton] I am doing a detachable sleeve
and hood track jacket, muscle tank,
a kilted short and leggings.
Ultimately, I want to have it be
a workout outfit, you leave the gym,
you have to go to a meeting,
you throw the sleeves back on,
you throw the wrap kilt over
so it becomes smart design.
Did you know that you wanted
to get into fashion when you were a kid?
- Yeah, I was a child model until I was 13.
- Wow!
So I grew up on sets
and being around clothes in general.
And then how did you settle on this
for a career?
Um, I was a backup dancer
for a Filipino boy band.
- No way!
- No! You were a backup dancer?
[laughs]
Yeah, I was a hip-hop dancer.
I realized we needed to have looks
for these events,
and so I went to Michaels arts and crafts
and sort of hodgepodged things together.
After making five looks
for all the dancers,
I realized I am a way better designer
than I am a dancer,
and that was gonna be my path.
Marco, you are expert.
For you, is that too sexy as a swimwear?
- Too sexy?
- Yeah.-
- No. His whole chest is covered.
- [laughs]
[Tan] Hi, Angelo.
- Hi. Oh, my God.
- She's stronger than she looks.
Or I'm light as a daisy,
that's what it is.
- All right, Angelo, how are you?
- [Alexa] Did you make your own print?
- Yeah, I drew the print.
- Amazing.
'Cause I can do swimwear.
- You're doing swimwear?
- Yeah.
I create three pieces.
Cap and pants made by Lycra,
and the top made by elastic and neoprene.
[laughs] And we would like to know
how you're doing today.
- [laughing] Without Charles?
- [Tan] Yes.
It's like a little disaster.
I have no technical skills
to do the project in the perfect way.
Can you hand-sew?
- I can hand-sew, yes. Simple things.
- Okay.
- But I will try to sew with the machine.
- [Tan] Okay.
[Alexa] We'll get out your hair
so you can get to it.
I've got loads to do.
I'm just working on the trouser.
I haven't even started the top.
I'm not feeling like I can get this done.
It takes a long time to pattern-make.
I can't just, like, drape on the stand,
that's not how it works for me.
Ooh!
- Hi, Daniel.
- Oh, my gams!
How you doing?
So, what's your sport?
What activity have you chosen?
I was thinking about rowing.
Because when I design my collections,
I always think about British heritage,
and when I think about old rowing teams,
I wanted to take elements of those looks
and then make it
into a modern activewear piece.
So I'm making
a long-sleeved, striped jersey
with a neoprene legging
with a ripstop short over the top
and a long, striped, neoprene scarf.
Okay. How did you get into this?
Did your parents work in clothing,
fashion?
No, not at all.
They work in nuclear power.
Complete opposite.
But I was kind of always brought up
quite creatively.
My grandmother was an artist
and I would go to her house
on a Thursday and do painting lessons.
Aw! That's nice.
- Do you parents come to your shows?
- Yeah, always on the front row.
Absolutely. They love it.
My dad always wears a shirt.
They always encouraged me to do
anything I wanted to do.
They're such supportive parents.
Thank you so much, Daniel.
- Thank you.
- See you later.
[Marco groans] I think it's a mess.
It might just be a mess
because I'm rushing.
[Ashton] Construction-wise, you can clean
up, but are you worried about the design?
[Marco]
I don't know if I like the design, either.
This is almost my only favorite thing.
- [Ashton] I would rethink the blue.
- Okay.
- It's distracting.
- That's what's killing me, right?
- Yeah.
- Oh, yeah, you're right.
[Ashton] Though he's no longer a teammate,
I'm happy to help out Marco regardless.
I am there for him as a best friend
and moral support, physical support.
Whatever it is, I got his back.
- You know what I mean?
- Yeah.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
- Charles, hi.
- Hello, dear.
Welcome to my little frantic circle.
[Tan] You've got a few hours left.
- You've bloody finished your whole look!
- Look at that! You're so far!
You know we've given you two days, right?
Not six hours. Talk us through it.
I wanted her to be, like, a boxer,
because my sister is a kickboxer.
What I wanted was, like,
a really strong woman in the workplace,
and she just left her office,
and she just literally has time
to throw on a jacket,
run to the gym and then be fierce.
So, she's wearing satin shorts,
a sport top,
and this parachute jacket
with a zip and hoodie.
- Okay. You go to the gym a lot?
- Yes.
Is it purely physical?
No, I started because I went
through a huge depression.
The end of 2014,
I thought I was going
to set up my home in London,
and I couldn't get a visa.
The job opportunity fell through.
I had to go back to Canada.
I was stuck there.
There was a really dark period
where I just did nothing.
I just felt like I had no control,
and so I went to the gym
in order to have control.
And that was probably the best decision
I've ever made
because it allowed my anxiety
to keep at bay.
Perhaps I take it a little far sometimes,
with six days a week,
but it's my therapy.
[whirring]
[Daniel] Ashton, I think these pants
are gonna be small.
- [laughing]
- Oh, my God!
I hope they gon' stretch!
If these don't fit tomorrow,
I'm gonna have to make an entire new pair.
[grunts]
[grunts] Ooh!
[laughs]
I'm excited because this time I make
something that looks so sexy and cool.
But I hope the high cut of my bodysuit
is not too high.
Okay. I'm not afraid.
I'm using the sewing machine,
and I feel like I can do this.
Hmm.
Maybe there is a lot of technical problem,
but I believe I can finish my look.
In fashion, I have not the chance
to learn everything.
I started to work six months after school
because my family was not very rich.
But at the time,
my career grew very, very fast,
and after only one year,
I am becoming creative director.
I want to inspire people,
because I know if you dream,
you can arrive to Hollywood.
I came from a very small town
where it's very, very poor,
- [shouting]
- For me, this time here is like a dream.
One!
One, that's one single hour left
till the end of the day!
[groans]
It looks sporty,
but still, like, dance. Yeah.
Just taking a quick whip around
with you, love, and it's
- it's impressive.
- Genuinely, incredibly impressive.
That looks great.
Ashton is beavering away over there
in the corner.
He's done this kind of dip-dye situation,
obviously his favorite two colors,
black and white.
He's trying something that could be
very, very hard to execute,
but if executed well,
is going to look beautiful.
[Carli]

- a really intelligent offering again.
- [Alexa] Totally.
[Tan] But if you just do not feel
positive about what you're doing,
it reads in your work.
[Alexa] Charles is making a boxing outfit
with these shorts,
which split up the side.
He'd whipped up a coat
before we got over there.
I know. He's also nearly done
with his shorts and the top.
Charles has the most at stake
in this competition.
He doesn't have his own brand,
so he's really fighting for it.
He wants to win.
Daniel has a very clear vision
as to what he wants to do.
The fabrics are good.
The colors are interesting,
and it's looking very old English.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
- But is it gonna be impactful enough
on that runway for us to think,
"You should win"?
I prefer now
to start to stitch by hand,
because I feel more sure.
[Alexa] Angelo
I know that he has something in him,

[cheering]
Okay, stand by, pay attention.
- [dance music playing]
- [cheering]
- Whoa!
- Wow.
[woman] That's really cool.
Wow.
Three, two, one, go!
- [Minju] Ashton!
- Love it.
- Starting off with a bang.
- Yeah.
[Elizabeth Stewart] I love the shape.
- That extra piece is so interesting.
- I know.
[both] Very well put together.
[Aberg]
However, I do miss the next level on it.
- [Tan] Yeah.
- [Aberg] We're talking about the future.
[Tan] Yeah, it feels
like I could buy it from a store.
Exactly.
[laughing]
I love the combination of how the colors
are used in the fabrication.
It's kind of a '70s take on sportswear,
but with a modern way.
It's a '70s take on ballet,
- so you got the reference.
- Yes.
I'm not that bothered
about this one, you know.
- [Aberg] You're not?
- [Alexa] No.
[Tan]
It's not my favorite, but I like it.
I think I don't like that head thing.
- [Tan] The styling's off.
- '[Aberg] The 70s, yeah.
[designers gasping] Whoa!
I love him.
[Aberg] I'm struggling to see
- any innovation in it.
- Me too.
[Aberg] The tights also fits really bad.
I think it's a good print, though.
I'm gonna give him that.
[Aberg] It's a very good commercial print.
[Tan] But the top is unflattering.
- It's just too tight unfortunately.
- [Tan] Yeah.
Sexy!
[designers] Sexy Minju!
Incredible.
- I love the cape.
- [Stewart] That is waterproof.
- Talk about amazing and practical.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
I like that it's not that high cut
that everyone on the planet is doing.
- Isn't that cool, with the cape?
- It's great.
Three, two, one, go!
- [designers applauding]
- [Minju] Yeah, Marco!
- [Aberg] Love.
- It's great.
[Aberg] I love the fact that he took
a completely new take on a hoodie.
The second layer, for me,
it's such a given color combination,
which I feel like I'm missing the novelty
in that side of it.
It's not pushed enough.
It's really just pop of neon,
and that's it.
- [Minju] Yes!
- Babe!
[Aberg] I love it.
- The fabrication choice of theme, yeah.
- [Tan] Agreed.
I like the snaps
on those asymmetrical shorts.
This is what you get from Charles
without Angelo,
but it's actually just much more elevated.
I mean, I want that jacket.
- [Tan] I want the jacket!
- [Aberg] Me too.
[Tan] And I want the short skirt thing,
and I'd wear the top,
even though I don't have breasts.
- It's all so good.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
- Carli!
- Beautiful.
[cheering]
[Aberg]
Maybe for yoga, it could be working,
but it's definitely much more loungey
than really activewear.
It works the least for me,
even though I like the subtlety
- of the color combination.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
This one makes me feel a bit sad,
like she's at the airport in her pajamas.
[Stewart] Gray is a sad choice.
- It feels complicated.
- Yes, it does.
- Oh, hey, Harry Potter!
- This is good.
I love the way the colors
and the blocking is done,
because it's a sporty blocking that's done
in a new way.
Exactly.
- I love this one. Very English.
- That's great.
Amazing colors, great combo.
- It brings me joy. It makes me feel happy.
- Yeah.
It's amazing.
[cheering]
Whoo!
Whoo!
Yeah!
- I love this job.
- Well done.
- Yay!
- Yay!
- To everybody!
- Cheers, you guys.
- Well done!
- Good job.
Selfie, guys. Kids, get in.
- [camera shutter clicks]
- [Marco] Hey!
- My battery needs a charge.
- Here.
- [Charles] How do I do this?
- [Marco] Just put it on top.
- [Marco] Boom!
- [Charles] That's so cool. It's charging.
[Marco] That's crazy, right?
Well, shall we take a closer look
at their creations backstage?
- Yes, let's hit it.
- Okay, let's do this.
- [Charles] I got this. Don't worry.
- I got it.
- Charles, this is Jo from Adidas.
- Hello, Charles.
- Hi, pleasure to meet you.
- Lovely meeting you.
First of all, Charles,
tell us your inspiration, please.
This is a woman in a very strong position.
She'll put this on, head to the gym,
take it off,
no fuss, but still be chic.
I think the look
was really well thought through.
And how it was pulled together,
the fabric choices.
I love the modern take on boxing shorts,
so it becomes like a skirt.
The bra, believe me, it's the most complex
piece on a woman's body.
But it really looks great.
The jacket,
this is the thing that really wowed us.
- [Aberg] It's beautiful.
- [laughs]
[Tan] It's hip, it's inspirational,
- aspirational, she's great.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you.
- [Charles] You too.
I am very happy, because this is
a challenge between me and myself,
to finish my look.
This is a miracle for me.
Yay! I feel already the winner, babies.
[Alexa]
Angelo, tell us about your look today.
[Angelo] I do by myself the print,
thinking about the bubble water.
I've got to say, I love your print.
I think it's a very confident offering.
How did you find the runway show?
The challenge, I was very scared
about the preparation, you know?
I am never sewing.
I never make paper patterns.
This is the first time.
Elizabeth, please be kind.
- [laughing]
- [Alexa] Okay.
[Stewart] The print is great.
The thinking behind it is fantastic.
But I think on the runway,
I wasn't sure what it was for,
because the fit's a little bit loose.
[Alexa] Unfortunately,
it's not fitting well around the crotch.
Here, too, it seems a little difficult
for doing the butterfly.
I think if you're gonna make swimwear,
it has to fit perfectly.
Yes, of course.
We asked for something that could go
straight from the runway into the sport,
and I don't know how that would perform
in the water.
[Daniel] I've gone hard with this one.
It's, like, full British rower.
The only thing he's missing
is an oar right now.
I know that it's a risk,
and it's so specific,
and it's really, like, it's me,
but I love it.
Jo, do you like this look?
I love it.
- [laughing]
- It's amazing.
The fit, you really nailed it.
It looks like you can go out running,
rowing.
I really want to look at
the scarf situation.
Of course.
I like the mock turtleneck.
I didn't even notice that was under there.
Oh, yeah.
I really love the top.
I think it's really interesting.
You wouldn't notice
it's activewear fabric.
Every piece works separate.
I could wear the shorts with a button-up
if I wanted, and it could be a separate.
The only thing is I wish I'd seen this
on the runway,
'cause that makes it even nicer.
- It's a solid look, a really solid look.
- Thank you.
[Alexa] You were designing something
- for the specific purpose of dance.
- Yes.
I used to be a ballet dancer,
and I can imagine I'm wearing this
to dance.
I love the color choices. I love
the different techniques in the skirt.
I think the spirit is fantastic,
I love the ideas. I love the design.
The execution up close is a little rough.
The fit is definitely off.
- Yeah, sorry.
- I couldn't stop looking at the headband.
It distracted me from paying attention
to this beautiful design.
- Okay.
- I was like, "Wait, she's at Coachella."
I chose wrestling. I wanted to create
something you could throw over.
Like, you're at the gym, working out.
[Aberg]
I love your take on a classic hoodie.
I do feel the way
the stitching has come across,
it's creating a little bit
of an unfinished feeling.
Yes, I do feel like I missed the mark
a bit on that.
- I smiled when I saw it.
- [laughs]
- [Stewart] I think you hit it. It's great.
- Thank you.
[Stewart] I love the poncho.
The colors are fantastic,
and I think it's really good.
And the cape is a really fantastic piece.
Now I see as well,
having split you both up,
actually this kind of detail
was your element in the partnership.
One thing I'm really happy to see
is that in my mind, this is really sexy.
- You know? But in a cool way!
- [laughing]
[Alexa] It's sexy for cool girls.
- [laughs] I mean, finally!
- Yeah, totally.
Carli, I know you weren't excited
to do activewear,
and I wanna know how it went.
Initial idea was that this would popper on
and be a simple trouser,
and then there was meant
to be poppers here,
and a sleeve that never transpired.
Okay. You came up with an idea
that was actually super, super smart.
The plan was maybe too ambitious
for one person.
If you were still in your team,
you could've done this.
I think the fabric
was not the right choice.
Especially for the pants.
The color, it doesn't feel like it popped.
Really, if you want to have a color pop,
your shirt is the color pop.
It feels a little bit sad.
This is a general fitness look.
I wanted to create something
that everything is detachable.
If you were at work and had to work out
in your clothes,
you can take off the hood
and work out in the fitted vest.
- Can we see it without the sleeves?
- Yes, so this all comes off.
[Alexa] Oh, wow.
- Like that.
- Okay.
- Wow, interesting.
- Very smart.
What do you have underneath?
The foundation is all white.
It's a little bit more elevated.
Yeah, totally.
Elizabeth, what are your thoughts?
I think the overall effect on the runway
was a little too subtle.
Huh?
[Stewart]
The ombre's beautiful, but you're unlucky
that it's a really overused fashion trend.
It's out there so much,
it made it seem a little bit like
something that's already in the stores.
Okay.
It wasn't a surprise,
it wasn't Next in Fashion.
For me, the same with this styling.
It's something that's around a lot
at the moment
so it's less out the box.
I am shocked.
I love what I made.
It is not just something basic.
It has that elevated feel to athletic wear
that I think is missing.
Everyone, eight activewear looks.
Let's discuss.
Let's talk about Minju.
[Stewart] The poncho was amazing.
It looked incredible on the runway.
All of it was great.
Her styling, the pink, the cutout.
[Alexa] Also, her first go at doing
something form-fitting,
and for that, I just thought
- it was an incredible debut.
- Yeah.
[Tan] So, Carli.
[Aberg] The concept was really great.
Unfortunately, the fabrication
and the execution did not support
that idea at all.
She got too much in her head.
[Tan] Angelo. What did you think?
[Stewart]
Activewear starts with performance.
He really missed the mark.
You could not swim in that outfit.
He just has no technical know-how,
and that is what's really letting him down
in this challenge.
- Ashton.
- The look was very well thought through.
It was well-made.
- However, I do miss the next level on it.
- Yeah.
I can purchase it from any store,
pretty much right now.
Okay, let's talk about Charles.
I think it was a very well-executed look.
I really liked the jacket.
The jacket was the star of that show.
[Aberg] It's very solid.
I thought it was stellar.
Stellar set. Formidable.
Okay, can we talk about Daniel?
Daniel, it was
- Look at your face light up.
- [laughing]
[Aberg] I loved the colors.
He picked a fabric
that worked perfectly to it.
[Tan] Every part of it fit beautifully,
the construction was so well done.
And now the tough task.
We have to decide
on who's gonna win this challenge
and who's gonna be going home.
Congratulations to you all
for making the most incredible
activewear looks.
The winner tonight
absolutely blew us away.
The first individual winner
of the competition is
Daniel!
Oh!
Thanks, guys.
When the look stepped out,
it hit the perfect balance
between activewear that performs
and fashion that would be at home
on any runway in the world.
I loved the way
you referenced classic sport
to a new dimension
and really brought it the future.
Thank you so much.
- How are you feeling, Daniel?
- I was really happy with what I did.
It was, like, very personal.
The fact you liked it
and you've chosen me as the winner
is really humbling.
Congratulations, Daniel,
you're the very first individual winner
in this competition.
Thank you very much.
Unfortunately,
I can't say the same for all of you.
Three designers will step forward,
and of those three, two will go.
[Tan] Please step forward
[sighs]
Angelo.
The next designer we would like
to step forward is
Carli.
The final designer in danger
of leaving us tonight is
Ashton.
Angelo, the assignment was activewear.
You chose swimming,
and I just don't see how anyone could swim
in the outfit that you made.
The pants didn't fit.
The crop top would definitely ride up
the minute you started stroking,
so it just didn't work.
I prepared, for first time,
prepared patterns, I sewed it,
I prepared the printing
by myself, and I'm very proud of me.
But I have no technical skills.
Carli, you were overambitious
with this one,
and you just weren't able
to execute on your incredibly
ambitious designs.
Yeah.
I have a tendency
to intellectualize and conceptualize
a little bit too much.
Ashton, really liked your design,
but I can see it going on the rack now.
It's relevant to this moment,
and we're looking for the Next in Fashion.
Obviously I respect your guys' opinions,
not my designs are for everybody,
but if I went home with that piece,
I knew I'd stand by it,
and I'd be very proud of it.
Okay.
Three incredibly talented designers.
But only one of you will stay.
The designer that we would like
to stay in this competition is
Ashton.
Ashton, please step back for me.
Thank you.
Angelo and Carli, sadly,
we're losing both of you.
Carli, what have your highlights been
of this competition?
Winning, of course.
[laughing]
Yeah, it's been amazing
to be here with everybody, and--
[laughs] Stop it.
Thank you, Carli.
Angelo, how's this journey been for you?
I feel happy.
I feel happy because I feel the winner.
For me to be here with them, with you,
I'm so grateful.
I want to thank from the cameraman
to the people who support us.
It's an incredible experience.
This is the best side of fashion.
Thank you for this experience.
Thank you, Angelo.
- [laughs]
- [applauding]
[sighs]
Well, I hate to say it,
because you two have been amazing.
But it is finally time
to say good night to you both.
[Angelo] Thank you.
Ciao!
I'm obviously really sad to be leaving,
but really happy for the experience.
I stepped out of my comfort zone.
I usually work a long time on things.
To work in such a quick manner,
so, yeah, it's definitely something
I wouldn't normally have done.
This experience was amazing.
From all the amazing designers I met,
I have a lot of inspiration.
I'm super grateful and super happy.
And tonight, I will have a party.
I feel the winner.
I am the winner.
- Sorry, babies, I am the winner!
- [laughing]
[Angelo laughing] Yeah!
Well, that was emotional.
What, why? You've got odd shoes on.
I have. I've been doing it all episode.
- Want to know how many?
- Not really.
- There's been loads.
- Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Click the next episode
and see what he's wearing next.
[theme music playing]
[woman vocalizing]
Oh, 99.
[chewing] One-hundred!
- I did it, I ate it all!
- [grunts]
[panting] Welcome back to Next in Fashion.
Wait, what's this challenge again?
- Activewear.
- Oh.
- Come on.
- Yeah, give me a hand.
- [grunts]
- Come on, big guy. I'm so proud of us.
[theme music playing]
[Angel and Minju speak Korean] Goodbye.
[laughing]
I'm really gonna miss working with Carli.
She pushed me as a designer,
and she brought out the best in me.
Carli's absolutely livid.
I'm gonna kill him.
It's the first time
that I'm gonna be solo,
and yeah, I'm feeling fine about it.
I'm used to working alone.
That's how I work in the company,
so it doesn't bother me.
Agh! Angel!
- We can shout!
- [exclaims]
I was so happy, working with Angel,
because every time, like, I work with her,
we depend on each other.
Push and pull, you know.
- Guys.
- [Marco] Get in the picture.
- [laughing]
- [camera shutter clicking]
[Minju] And I got lots of support by her.
It's more fear than excited.
[Tan France panting]
What is happening?
I think we're giving away the challenge.
Come on.
- Morning, everyone.
- [Alexa] Hi, everyone!
Good to see you all.
Come on, gather round.
There are eight of you designers left.
And you're about to compete
for the first time
as individuals.
Because as you all know,
only one of you will be the winner
of $250,000,
courtesy of Net A Porter,
and be named Next in Fashion.
Net A Porter is also offering the winner
an opportunity to retail
their designs on their site.
It's time for your next challenge.
Yeah! I mean, I hope you're all okay
with working up a sweat.
Because today's challenge
is actually all about
Can you believe it?
Activewear!
Yeah, that's right.
It's not just for the gym.
It's also for the school drop-off,
brunch and even Netflix and chill.
- Ooh!
- [laughing]
[Alexa] So, Charles,
the poster boy for activewear.
I presume you like to go to the gym often.
Well, a few times a week, maybe.
I gym six times a week.
- [grunting]
- So even if I've never made it before,
I know what it needs to have
in order to function.
- Daniel.
- Hey.
I assume by what you wear most days
that your line's all activewear.
Totally.
[laughing]
When I work out, I wear a silk shirt,
tailored trousers.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Some kind of cummerbund around the waist.
This is outside of my comfort zone,
so I'm a bit nervous for this challenge.
[Tan] We want to see
all of you create activewear designs
that are both fashion and function.
And we will be joined
by a special guest judge,
who is an expert in all things activewear.
I mean, I bet at least two of you
are wearing their shoes right now.
Joining us tomorrow
is design guru and fearless leader,
Josefine Aberg from Adidas.
Adidas is a huge empire,
and Josefine knows her stuff,
so you guys better bring it.
For your first individual challenge,
you can choose whether you're designing
for a man or a woman,
and we're asking you
to make just one look.
[laughing]
- You're happy about that?
- The relief on Angelo's face!
[laughing]
I am very happy to have only one look.
Without Charles,
I have not the technical skills.
Charles teach me the tailoring,
the perfection of the construction.
I feel alone. [groans, laughs]
Alexa and I definitely got our workout
this morning, 'cause we made sure
that the closet is fully stocked
for your activewear challenge.
- [designers gasp]
- [Alexa] Ooh, look at her shine!
Look at her glow. She's ready!
[Tan] We've added some extra knit,
some extra mesh.
We've also added some fun tools
for you to personalize your looks.
The digital printer is back,
and once again,
you can create your own prints.
The world is your oyster.
- Are you ready?
- Yeah.
- Yes.
- Your activewear challenge
starts-- ooh!
[both] Now!
Great, great, great, great, great, great.
Okay.
[laughs] Activewear.
- [Alexa] It's a true design challenge
- [Tan] Mm-hmm.
because it's practicality, functionality
and aesthetics.
- Mmm!
- I picked it off the ground.
- Oh, girl, take it. Jesus Christ!
- I rolled it down.
You're considering fabrics
like never before.
- [Alexa] Yeah, totally.
- [Tan] Are they fast drying?
Is it going to be breathable?
It's not just, "Does it look pretty?"
[Alexa] Yeah.
[Tan] Not only set them a challenge
that's complicated, we've split 'em up.
It's gonna be so interesting
to see how they work alone.
Ah, okay.
This is really nerve-racking,
'cause activewear isn't my field.
It never will be.
Activewear isn't fashion.
I don't know anybody
that wears spandex anymore.
Carli is a really amazing designer,
but also, she has a really hot temper.
Oh [bleeps] it! I'm so stupid.
Sometimes that would be a distraction.
They're very fitted, babe. I did tell you.
- Leave it, leave it.
- I'll just let you do it.
Okay. [grunts]
[Daniel]
She can kind of get in her own head.
I already feel like she is today.
I'm worried about her.
This tracing is really bad.
I'm very grateful to Charles.
He teach me a lot.
But today,
I have the real chance
to show the people who I am.
I'm going to make my own print
because I'm creating swimwear.
I love snorkeling, eight hours for a day
when I'm on a holiday,
and fishes will be not afraid about me.
So, my activewear look is inspired
by my experience as a dancer.
From the age of four to the age of 12,
I've been dancing ballet
and Chinese national dance as well.
So I'm going to create a bodysuit,
plus a detachable skirt,
and that skirt is going to be
super colorful,
and when she walks, she definitely has
a different silhouette out of it.
[Marco] As a costume designer,
I do a lot of music videos,
films, but I also work for the circus.
What the contortionists need
is completely different
from what the trapeze artists need.
I had to learn how
to respond to body movement.
[whirs]
The challenge is to create something
that you can move in,
something that breathes.
So I'll be making a wrestling singlet
with a backless hoodie
out of a lightweight neoprene fabric.
A wrestling singlet is one of the most
universal activewear pieces
that you can create.
- Carli.
- Hi.
- How are you getting on?
- Okay.
It's really hard,
'cause I'm not a sport person.
I'm not used to working with these types
of fabric.
- [Alexa] What's the theme?
- It's kind of general sporty.
There's a basketball top
with the sleeve that poppers off,
so it becomes something sporty,
and then the trouser that poppers off
and becomes a basketball short.
I want it to look like a suit.
I get that.
I'm trying to keep
the structural element in it,
- because that is very me.
- Yeah.
How are you feeling about timing
at the moment?
I'm quite worried about it.
'Cause I've got so many pieces to it,
I'm like, "Oh, no, what have I done?"
- You got this, come on.
- All right, good luck, my love.
Thank you. See you later.
[Angelo] Oh, my God, I love it.
Wow.
I'm making a bodysuit right now.
I love the stretch fabric,
but it's not crazy stretch,
so it's going to hold the body shape
really, really well.
- [Ashton] Marco, can I get your eyes?
- Yeah.
So, it's gonna ombre.
Does that look fairly color corrected?
The hues are so slow.
I think it's fine.
I'm not active person, right?
I don't like exercise outside.
I wear activewear when I sleep.
That's why I think
I'm very into video games
[laughing]
and my two cats Noonnoo and Aku.
- They are so warm and fuzzy.
- [yelps]
- They make me really relax.
- [cat meows]
Since I love video games,
I'm making a superhero-inspired look.
It's like a swimsuit,
and I'm gonna make a cape.
Superheroes, they are so active, no?
They're the most active people
in the world!
She flies, she jumps, she saves the world.
Like, with this dress,
everything's possible.
[laughs]
- Ashton.
- Hi, guys.
Hello. My God, that's a surprise,
you're using black.
It goes to white!
- Oh, it's ombre.
- Jesus!
[Alexa] Oh, nice.
[Ashton] I am doing a detachable sleeve
and hood track jacket, muscle tank,
a kilted short and leggings.
Ultimately, I want to have it be
a workout outfit, you leave the gym,
you have to go to a meeting,
you throw the sleeves back on,
you throw the wrap kilt over
so it becomes smart design.
Did you know that you wanted
to get into fashion when you were a kid?
- Yeah, I was a child model until I was 13.
- Wow!
So I grew up on sets
and being around clothes in general.
And then how did you settle on this
for a career?
Um, I was a backup dancer
for a Filipino boy band.
- No way!
- No! You were a backup dancer?
[laughs]
Yeah, I was a hip-hop dancer.
I realized we needed to have looks
for these events,
and so I went to Michaels arts and crafts
and sort of hodgepodged things together.
After making five looks
for all the dancers,
I realized I am a way better designer
than I am a dancer,
and that was gonna be my path.
Marco, you are expert.
For you, is that too sexy as a swimwear?
- Too sexy?
- Yeah.-
- No. His whole chest is covered.
- [laughs]
[Tan] Hi, Angelo.
- Hi. Oh, my God.
- She's stronger than she looks.
Or I'm light as a daisy,
that's what it is.
- All right, Angelo, how are you?
- [Alexa] Did you make your own print?
- Yeah, I drew the print.
- Amazing.
'Cause I can do swimwear.
- You're doing swimwear?
- Yeah.
I create three pieces.
Cap and pants made by Lycra,
and the top made by elastic and neoprene.
[laughs] And we would like to know
how you're doing today.
- [laughing] Without Charles?
- [Tan] Yes.
It's like a little disaster.
I have no technical skills
to do the project in the perfect way.
Can you hand-sew?
- I can hand-sew, yes. Simple things.
- Okay.
- But I will try to sew with the machine.
- [Tan] Okay.
[Alexa] We'll get out your hair
so you can get to it.
I've got loads to do.
I'm just working on the trouser.
I haven't even started the top.
I'm not feeling like I can get this done.
It takes a long time to pattern-make.
I can't just, like, drape on the stand,
that's not how it works for me.
Ooh!
- Hi, Daniel.
- Oh, my gams!
How you doing?
So, what's your sport?
What activity have you chosen?
I was thinking about rowing.
Because when I design my collections,
I always think about British heritage,
and when I think about old rowing teams,
I wanted to take elements of those looks
and then make it
into a modern activewear piece.
So I'm making
a long-sleeved, striped jersey
with a neoprene legging
with a ripstop short over the top
and a long, striped, neoprene scarf.
Okay. How did you get into this?
Did your parents work in clothing,
fashion?
No, not at all.
They work in nuclear power.
Complete opposite.
But I was kind of always brought up
quite creatively.
My grandmother was an artist
and I would go to her house
on a Thursday and do painting lessons.
Aw! That's nice.
- Do you parents come to your shows?
- Yeah, always on the front row.
Absolutely. They love it.
My dad always wears a shirt.
They always encouraged me to do

They're such supportive parents.

I don't know if I like the design, either.
This is almost my only favorite thing.
- [Ashton] I would rethink the blue.

What I wanted was, like,
a really strong woman in the workplace,

run to the gym and then be fierce.
So, she's wearing satin shorts,
a sport top,
and this parachute jacket
with a zip and hoodie.
- Okay. You go to the gym a lot?
- Yes.
Is it purely physical?
No, I started because I went
through a huge depression.
The end of 2014,
I thought I was going
to set up my home in London,
and I couldn't get a visa.
The job opportunity fell through.
I had to go back to Canada.
I was stuck there.
There was a really dark period
where I just did nothing.
I just felt like I had no control,
and so I went to the gym

Her styling, the pink, the cutout.
[Alexa] Also, her first go at doing
something form-fitting,
and for that, I just thought
- it was an incredible debut.
- Yeah.
[Tan] So, Carli.
[Aberg] The concept was really great.
Unfortunately, the fabrication
and the execution did not support
that idea at all.
She got too much in her head.
[Tan] Angelo. What did you think?
[Stewart]
Activewear starts with performance.
He really missed the mark.
You could not swim in that outfit.
He just has no technical know-how,
and that is what's really letting him down
in this challenge.
- Ashton.
- The look was very well thought through.
It was well-made.
- However, I do miss the next level on it.
- Yeah.
I can purchase it from any store,
pretty much right now.
Okay, let's talk about Charles.
I think it was a very well-executed look.
I really liked the jacket.
The jacket was the star of that show.
[Aberg] It's very solid.
I thought it was stellar.
Stellar set. Formidable.
Okay, can we talk about Daniel?
Daniel, it was
- Look at your face light up.
- [laughing]
[Aberg] I loved the colors.
He picked a fabric
that worked perfectly to it.
[Tan] Every part of it fit beautifully,
the construction was so well done.
And now the tough task.
We have to decide
on who's gonna win this challenge
and who's gonna be going home.
Congratulations to you all
for making the most incredible
activewear looks.
The winner tonight
absolutely blew us away.
The first individual winner
of the competition is
Daniel!
Oh!
Thanks, guys.
When the look stepped out,
it hit the perfect balance
between activewear that performs
and fashion that would be at home
on any runway in the world.
I loved the way
you referenced classic sport
to a new dimension
and really brought it the future.
Thank you so much.
- How are you feeling, Daniel?
- I was really happy with what I did.
It was, like, very personal.
The fact you liked it
and you've chosen me as the winner
is really humbling.
Congratulations, Daniel,
you're the very first individual winner
in this competition.
Thank you very much.
Unfortunately,
I can't say the same for all of you.
Three designers will step forward,
and of those three, two will go.
[Tan] Please step forward
[sighs]
Angelo.
The next designer we would like
to step forward is
Carli.
The final designer in danger
of leaving us tonight is
Ashton.
Angelo, the assignment was activewear.
You chose swimming,
and I just don't see how anyone could swim
in the outfit that you made.
The pants didn't fit.
The crop top would definitely ride up
the minute you started stroking,
so it just didn't work.
I prepared, for first time,
prepared patterns, I sewed it,
I prepared the printing
by myself, and I'm very proud of me.
But I have no technical skills.
Carli, you were overambitious
with this one,
and you just weren't able
to execute on your incredibly
ambitious designs.
Yeah.
I have a tendency
to intellectualize and conceptualize
a little bit too much.
Ashton, really liked your design,
but I can see it going on the rack now.
It's relevant to this moment,
and we're looking for the Next in Fashion.
Obviously I respect your guys' opinions,
not my designs are for everybody,
but if I went home with that piece,
I knew I'd stand by it,
and I'd be very proud of it.
Okay.
Three incredibly talented designers.
But only one of you will stay.
The designer that we would like
to stay in this competition is
Ashton.
Ashton, please step back for me.
Thank you.
Angelo and Carli, sadly,
we're losing both of you.
Carli, what have your highlights been
of this competition?
Winning, of course.
[laughing]
Yeah, it's been amazing
to be here with everybody, and--
[laughs] Stop it.
Thank you, Carli.
Angelo, how's this journey been for you?
I feel happy.
I feel happy because I feel the winner.
For me to be here with them, with you,
I'm so grateful.
I want to thank from the cameraman
to the people who support us.
It's an incredible experience.
This is the best side of fashion.
Thank you for this experience.
Thank you, Angelo.
- [laughs]
- [applauding]
[sighs]
Well, I hate to say it,
because you two have been amazing.
But it is finally time
to say good night to you both.
[Angelo] Thank you.
Ciao!
I'm obviously really sad to be leaving,
but really happy for the experience.
I stepped out of my comfort zone.
I usually work a long time on things.
To work in such a quick manner,
so, yeah, it's definitely something
I wouldn't normally have done.
This experience was amazing.
From all the amazing designers I met,
I have a lot of inspiration.
I'm super grateful and super happy.
And tonight, I will have a party.
I feel the winner.
I am the winner.
- Sorry, babies, I am the winner!
- [laughing]
[Angelo laughing] Yeah!
Well, that was emotional.
What, why? You've got odd shoes on.
I have. I've been doing it all episode.
- Want to know how many?
- Not really.
- There's been loads.
- Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Click the next episode
and see what he's wearing next.
