Reef Doctors (2013) s01e07 Episode Script

Episode 7

1 SONG: When the sun did rise this morning I got a change upon my mind I could hear my soul a-calling In my heart I know it's time 'Cause I'm a medicine woman I know the sparks are gonna fly Whoa, woman For a cure of heart and mind Ah, ah, ah 'Cause I'm a medicine woman I'm gonna look life in the eye Yes, I'm a medicine woman I know the sparks are gonna fly! (BREATHING) (TENSE MUSIC) (TENSE MUSIC CONTINUES) NELL: Had Canberra on the phone.
They got a signal from a PLB up here registered to Toby.
What are the coordinates? Little Hope Reef.
Call Sam.
She's out that way.
Ok.
Yeah, ok.
Look, I'll call through as soon as I know the situation.
NELL: Have to be something pretty major for Toby to ask for help.
Ok.
Ok, Toby must have taken someone down and they've got in trouble.
- Mum! - Sam! Is there anyone on board, Gus? No, can't see anyone.
Mum, over there.
It's Toby's.
A couple of tanks are missing.
Only two? He's diving alone.
Jack, are any of these usable? (HISSING) No, they're empty.
I'll pop down and have a look.
Ok.
It's been nine minutes since he sent off the distress beacon.
Sharks.
- How many? - Enough.
- What about Toby? - 50, 60 feet down.
I'm thinking that many sharks, he could be bleeding.
I've got an idea.
Jack, what are you doing? Gonna activate the hydrophone, give the sharks a blast.
One orca pod coming up.
(WHALE SONG) (WHALE SONG CONTINUES) (GASPS FOR BREATH) That's it.
Just a little bit further.
Jack! One, two.
Ok.
Ok, Toby, you're right.
Slow your breathing down.
Just breathe.
Slow your breathing down.
Slow your breathing down.
(BREATHES HEAVILY) Look at me.
Slow.
Slow, easy breaths.
That's it.
Right.
Gus! Thank you.
Right.
Your heart is racing.
Look at me.
I need to see your pupils.
Good.
How long were you down there for, Toby? Not long.
25 minutes.
Bit of a nasty cut.
We thought you were shark bait, dude.
Good job with the hydrophone, mate.
Well, we'd better get you back to the clinic.
Jack, can you get Livvy on the radio, please? So what happened? What went wrong? It was too deep.
I couldn't stage up.
I figured the sharks would get me before the DCI did, so better to send for reinforcements.
How far away are you? (SAM OVER RADIO) About 20 minutes.
I'll send Nell to pick you up.
Alright.
See you back there.
This is Sunday.
The clinic doesn't actually open on Sundays.
Which is why we're paying you time and a half.
You're paying me that for the stocktake.
We're paying you that for turning up and doing whatever it is we tell you to do, which includes clinic runs.
Can I remind you that the clinic doesn't actually open on Sundays, so doing a clinic run on a Sunday is, like, so an extra trip.
You know Toby's hurt, right? Exactly why you need me to pick him up.
I haven't got time for this.
I've got to get the surgery ready.
I want the big car.
(SIGHS) Sometimes I think you were spawned by the devil.
Huh.
(FREYA PANTS) Living with a bunch of 20-year-olds is killing me.
I just can't do Saturday nights anymore.
Yeah, I can hear your arteries hardening from here.
Thanks.
You're so pathetic.
I'm just lying here, minding my own business.
Why am I suddenly pathetic? You've been here since ages and you've never even left Sonny's.
I've been on Toby's boat.
That's the only way to get here.
You've never been on it since.
You're lazy.
Do you exercise at all? I dance.
You seemed impressed with my moves.
You didn't exactly work up a sweat.
It wasn't for want of trying.
- Ok, come on.
Get up.
- Nope.
Nope.
We'll have fun.
I am having fun.
I'm resting.
That's what you do on Sundays.
Alright.
(GROANS) Whoo-hoo! Nell, keys, please.
Gus, can you take him through to the surgery? I'll be there in a minute.
How fast did he come up? I'm not worried about decompression sickness.
It's his blood pressure.
It's seriously low.
That's happened before.
When? Two years ago, just after I got here, after he'd been diving.
- Do we know why? - No.
We observed him until his BP went back up.
We thought it was a one-off.
He wasn't exactly cooperative.
He's exhibiting all the signs of shock and I can't understand why because he's such an experienced diver.
- Hey.
- Is he gonna be alright? Yeah.
Yeah, he's going to be fine.
Hey, can you sort those snakes out for me? Alright, so while I dress this wound, do you want to tell me what happened down there? That happened.
Do you want to start again? And this time a little chattier.
Well, sharks and blood, not a great combo.
Just decided it's no time to try and be a hero.
That's very wise and I would believe it if it was anybody else but you.
- Come on.
- Shit happens.
So Livvy was telling me that this isn't the first time.
So am I going to have a scar or what? Be nice to get something out of this.
Can you just answer the bloody question? I'm trying to help you.
You could have a serious problem here.
Why were you diving alone in the first place, huh? Just after a bit of peace and quiet.
Apply antibiotic cream to it three times a day to stop any coral infection.
You know the drill.
- Did I say that you could leave? - I want to get back to the boat.
You are not going anywhere until your blood pressure is back to normal.
- I would keep you in here overnight - What? But I know that is not going to happen.
No painkillers.
No anti-depressants.
- I'm not depressed.
- (SAM GROANS) All I am saying, idiot, is don't take anything that's going to lower your blood pressure.
If I stay and listen to you long enough it'll go through the roof.
You say the nicest things.
Happily for you, I have other places to be.
Thanks for your concern, but I'm fine.
Give him a tetanus shot, Livvy.
(EXHALES HEAVILY) You know his tanks were almost empty.
Funny.
He said he was only down there for 25 minutes.
Well, either he went down there with half-empty tanks No, he never goes down half-loaded.
Or he was down there a lot longer than he said he was.
So why would he lie? I don't know.
Maybe he was hyperventilating.
He was taking in a lot of breaths when he was on the boat.
Why would he panic? He's an ex-navy diver.
Surely a couple of sharks aren't gonna bother him.
He was bleeding.
Did he actually say what he was doing down there by himself? Yeah, of course.
Couldn't shut him up.
(CHUCKLES) Did you notice all of that electronic gear that he's had installed in the boat? - Yeah.
- What's he got? Thermal imaging camera, acoustic recording packages, an echo sounder and a high-tech radar.
What would he need all of that equipment for? I don't know.
To protect himself against pirates? I'll just ask him.
- Or Jack.
- Jack? Yeah, he seemed to know a lot about it.
SONNY: Hello.
Just going to stand there watching, mate? If I can.
You want a hand? Now he asks me.
I wouldn't know what to pack.
He is a virgin.
Yeah, never been rockclimbing, never been abseiling.
He's never done anything remotely adventurous as far as I can tell.
But I do make a mean osso bucco.
Well, the chances of finding a veal shank on Hope Island are extremely slim, so we'll just have to take your word for it.
(STARTS ENGINE) Alright.
Those who are about to die salute you.
Bloody hell.
(GRUNTS) Coming, ready or not.
(PANTS) I'm not climbing that.
Oh, come on, chicken.
Let's get you kitted up.
Ow.
Freya, watch it.
- (SAM KNOCKS) Jack? - Yeah, come in.
How's Toby? Stitched up and complaining.
He must be ok, then, hey? Mm.
That was a really cool trick with the orca pod.
How long has Toby had a hydrophone? - A couple of months.
- Mm.
It's very lucky he showed you how to use that.
I showed him how to use it.
I installed it for him.
Oh.
I didn't realise you'd been spending so much time with him.
Oh, Mum, you never asked.
I didn't think that I had to.
You always tell me everything.
In case you hadn't noticed, Mum, I'm not 10 anymore.
There's a lot of things I haven't been telling you, like the drugs and the girls and the parties.
No, it's just really, it's techie stuff.
You don't like techie stuff, remember? (LAUGHS SOFTLY) Gus was saying that Toby has a lot of unusual high-tech equipment on the boat.
Did you install that too? Mum, if you want to know exactly what Toby's got on his boat and why, go ask him.
Don't go behind his back.
It's an invasion of privacy.
Oh, I'm just curious.
I don't see why he needs that kind of equipment on a dive boat.
I don't know.
Maybe it's for when he's alone at night in the middle of shipping channels.
Jack I don't like you spending so much time with Toby.
- I would prefer it if - Hold on.
Let's backtrack a sentence.
Why? Because of things like today.
He takes too many risks.
I don't trust his judgment.
You don't trust his judgment, so suddenly you don't trust mine? Where's the logic in that? You're 15 years old, Jack.
So suddenly being 15 years old is a crime? - Guilty as charged.
- Ok.
Alright.
I didn't mean to put you down.
I'm a responsible person.
It's how I've been brought up.
I know you are and I'm really proud of you.
Toby's dumb for diving alone.
- I get that.
- Yeah, I know you do.
He's a good person.
I like him.
And I'll tell you something else.
He's got a lot more time for me and cares more about me than that jerk who walked out on us ever did.
Jack, this has got nothing to do with your father.
You think? (TYPES) I love you.
(CONTINUES TYPING) (CONTINUES TYPING) What's going on? I'm going back to the boat.
I'm sorry, Sam.
I tried to stop him.
Sam, relax.
It's a coral cut.
I'm fine.
Really? You're fine? Are you? Ok, so you're a doctor now.
So you want to tell me why your tank's nearly empty when you said you'd only been down there for 25 minutes? Give me my keys.
(KEYS JANGLE) Your cabin key.
That is it.
You are not going anywhere until I say so.
You are my responsibility legally.
You want me to sign a waiver? I'll sign a waiver.
Do you think that all I care about is you not suing me unless something goes wrong? Alright.
I went too far.
Toby there are so many possible conditions that you could have.
Maybe the cause is straightforward.
Maybe your air mix wasn't right.
But no.
All you think I care about is you not suing me.
You could have an aneurysm sitting on your brain, waiting to burst.
That would explain some of the stupid decisions you've been making lately.
My decisions, stupid or otherwise, are none of your business.
Well, they are when they involve Jack.
I was lucky Jack was there.
Do you think I would put him in harm's way, do you? I don't know.
Sam, he's a great kid.
He's smart.
He's a fast learner.
I like him.
He's not your son.
No, he's not.
Yeah, there's been a bit of a setback.
It's nothing major.
No, I'm just not gonna be able to get there.
You're going to have to come here.
I can't find a grip.
You got to run your fingers along the rock and feel for the cracks.
(MUTTERS) That's easy for you to say.
(LOUDER) That's what I'm trying to do.
(RICK GRUNTS) Stop being a Feigling.
I don't even know what that means, Freya.
Just do it.
Is this rope going to hold? Rick, climbing is all about trust.
You gotta trust your rope, you gotta trust your gear, and you gotta trust your buddy.
I had a patient once.
Abseiling accident.
Thoracolumbar fracture.
T3, T4.
- The guy was rooted.
- He wasn't climbing with me.
That makes me feel better.
Just don't look down, ok? I'm not going to look down.
Whoa! Ok.
Time to keep moving.
Did you not see that movie with the guy who had to cut his arm off? No.
I wish I hadn't.
(GRUNTS) Ok? Thought you might turn up.
Why? Oh, 'cause your mother told you not to.
- Did she say that? Did she say - Calm down.
Calm down.
You're giving me a headache just watching your tension.
So you going to give me a hand or what? So you didn't answer my question.
Well, she didn't say in as many words.
But she's got a point, Jack.
What I did was stupid.
You think? So why do you do it, Toby? Why do you always dive alone? Toby, what really happened down there today? It's a long story, mate.
Maybe some day I'll tell you.
When I'm older? That's bullshit.
I mean, what if we hadn't got there? Then I would have stuffed up big-time, wouldn't I? Yeah.
Yeah, you would have.
Mate, I had no right to hang any responsibility for saving my dumb arse on you.
That's what your mother's mad about.
No, she's mad at you because she likes you and she trusted you.
Epic load of venom.
Epic.
You are the best.
Yes, you are.
Oh, I love snakes.
Mm.
That's because the rules are so simple with snakes.
You just have to watch out for the bitey end.
If only humans were as easy.
Ah how long until we finish the stocktake, do you reckon? I reckon with the two of us, we'll knock this over in two hours.
Who's coming for a swim? Oh You go.
I think I'd rather be on my own for a bit anyway.
Thanks.
Give me five minutes? Yeah.
Sweet.
(SIGHS) Ok.
(BIRDS CHIRP) (BIRDS SQUAWK) (LAUGHS) Let's go.
Come on.
No.
I think I'm just going to chill here.
It's been a bit of a long day.
No, come on.
You've got to at least get your feet wet.
(LAUGHS) Do you know how many things in here can actually kill you? Come on.
(GROANS) (PUFFS) Whoa.
Argh! (PANTS) (LAUGHS) I'm the man.
(LAUGHS) In your dreams.
Oh, come on.
Don't burst my bubble.
I'm happy.
Wow.
That is awesome.
We've got to go back down, don't we? Eventually.
What are you doing? (SIGHS) I am relaxing.
Come and sit down.
This is why I came halfway around the world.
This island is so beautiful.
(BREATHES DEEPLY) (LAUGHS SOFTLY) (HELICOPTER WHIRRS) Toby, I'm not happy.
- This is not how I like to do business.
- Me either.
Why don't you hire a space shuttle next time? It might attract less attention.
You gonna tell me what happened to your arm? TOBY: So it's definitely Portuguese? Well, the marks are worn but the shape and the form is huh.
I've seen the exact same silhouette in a creamer that's in the Lisbon Museum recently.
I'd say, again, it definitely dates to the late 1700s.
You don't seem so excited.
Oh, it's been a bad day.
How much? Well, as is, 10 grand.
But like I keep saying, if we had provenance Yeah, well, that might not be happening any time soon.
I might have to take a break from diving for a while.
Why would you do that? Maybe I'm bored.
I'll let you know when I'm back on deck.
You know, if we could find the exact name of the ship this came from, you can add another zero to that 10 grand, maybe two.
You think I'm going to wait around when there's that much money to be made? Look, if you're bored, then I guarantee I can find someone who isn't.
Go for it.
You'll never find the wreck.
Come on, Toby.
You can't tell me you don't want to be rich.
Oh, dammit.
It's getting late.
I promised Sonny a couple of crabs for his karaoke buffet tonight.
There's probably a couple of crabs in the pots by now.
It's ok.
I've got to get back anyway.
Hey, I know I didn't have much luck last time, but I was thinking I could make you dinner.
(LAUGHS) Don't worry.
It's not, like, angry crustaceans coming out of muddy pots.
Like a like a proper dinner.
You know, I make a pretty good beurre blanc, bit of mango salad on the side, perhaps a bit of chilli.
I shouldn't.
You shouldn't tonight or - Gus, it's just - (LAUGHS) Hey.
Look, I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea.
Obsessive pharmacology isn't really great small talk.
But I like you, Livvy.
I really, really do.
- Gus - Is there a reason? Because Look, I really like you too.
It's just I don't date people I work with.
That's ok.
I can quit.
(GUS LAUGHS) Well, I kicked its butt.
You did well.
- Flattery gets you everywhere.
- I mean it.
- Really? - Yeah.
Thank you, Freya.
Now all I got to do is my winch training and I'll be all set for Medecins Sans Frontieres, United Nations Volunteers and the Red Cross.
Hm, and soon you'll be leading expeditions down the Amazon, swinging from tree to tree, huh? I actually did apply to MSF, but they knocked me back.
They said I needed more experience in tropical medicine.
Clearly, I need to do work on my quick release technique.
I'll give you a hand.
Argh.
There you go.
Anyway, that's why I went to the University Hospital.
I mean, we're here to do good, right? Yeah, of course.
I'm scaring you, hey? I'm being way too serious.
No.
No.
I I like you serious.
I reckon we should pack this stuff up so before it gets dark.
Amazing what we do for enough money.
You know, there are other things you can do to cure boredom.
I'll keep that in mind.
I'll expect a call from you in a couple of days.
(LAUGHS SOFTLY) - Hello.
- Hi.
I see your favourite accountant's been for a visit.
Brilliant.
You do exactly what I told you not to.
I'm not in the mood, Sam.
Will you please just go? You know, I would but there is this thing called duty of care and you don't seem to appreciate how seriously ill you could be.
You know, you may not care if you drop off the perch tomorrow, but I do and so does Jack.
How do you think he would feel? You don't care.
Here.
You can take your damn keys.
You go do whatever you want.
And just for your information this, it's no good for your blood pressure.
One minute he will do the sweetest of things, you know, like finding that book for me of my dad's, and then the next he's just a total jerk.
(SIGHS) Gus asked me out.
Oh, finally.
So what did you say? "Yes, Gus.
That would be fantastic.
" - Gus is great.
- Oh, Gus is the best.
I said no, of course.
Oh I've seen the way that you two are together.
He would be really good for you and I know that you would be really good for him.
- He'd be good for me.
- Mm.
So why not go out with him? Because if it doesn't go right, Gus or I, certainly one of us, will have to leave the island, and I don't want to have to leave here and I know you don't want to lose Gus.
(SIGHS) You know that you can't let work be an excuse not to have a life.
Ha.
Look who's talking.
Toby adores you.
Yeah? Well, tell that to his accountant.
Eugh.
Eugh.
(GROANS) My brothers are happy working for Dad.
They love it.
Property development.
Development and construction.
Subdivision.
Big? Huge.
But the crunch is going to come when Dad retires.
Who's going to take over? Anyway, it's not my problem.
Well, it's getting dark.
Who knew you could talk about yourself for so long, huh? Well, it is my favourite subject.
Get me started, I'll talk for ages.
I could tell.
(CHUCKLES) So you want to go? Yeah, if you want to.
You don't want to go to karaoke? I can't sing.
So you want me to keep talking about Um There are sleeping bags.
You want to grab them? We can talk under the stars.
She treats me like a 10-year-old.
Come on.
Get dressed.
Hey, at least you've got a mum, especially one like Sam.
Yeah, well, you don't have to live with her.
(SIGHS) I feel so much better.
(BOTH GIGGLE) ('BOYS IN TOWN' BY THE DMNYLS PLAYS DISTANTLY) That is my song.
Come on.
Oh.
SONG: I'm through with hanging round (BOTH LAUGH) With all the boys in town Now I want a man around Get me out of here I am just a red brassiere To all the boys in town And get this bus in top gear Get me out of here Whoo-hoo! I must have been desperate I must have been pretty low I must have been desperate I must have been pretty low I was always driving home Jack! Jack! - Whoo! - That's my boy.
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) I love you.
I love you, Jack.
Go, Sam.
Your mum's awesome.
Yeah, you're not the one who's gonna have to carry her home tonight.
Of matrimony They've all flunked the test I must have been desperate I must have been pretty low I must have been desperate I must have been pretty slow Get me out of here Get me out of here Get me out of here Get me out of here Get me out of here Get me out of here Get me out of here Get me out of here.
(LOUD CHEERING) Go, Sam! (TENSE MUSIC) (RAPID GUNFIRE) (PANTS) (RAPID GUNFIRE) (RAPID GUNFIRE) (PANTS) (RAPID GUNFIRE) (BREATHES HEAVILY) (THEME SONG PLAYS)
