your mother got pregnant with you.
We didn't tell anyone
for a couple of months,
and you would have thought
that was some huge grand offense.
We went to live on our own,
no help from anyone.
Things got complicated.
And what about Mom's family?
Your mother didn't really want
to get her family involved.
So that's really how I was born?

We just weren't prepared.
Actually, we didn't even go
to the hospital,
which was a grave mistake.
Your mom got sick,
and a few months later, died.

They invented their own story

needing to finish college
so they could keep up appearances
to look like the family
they thought we should be.
But when they told me that story,
I was never convinced.
