Shattered (2017) s01e07 Episode Script

Everyones a Hostage to Someone

Previously on Shattered Nick, what do you want? What do you say about an interview? What do I have to do to convince you that we're over? You want space, you got it.
See you later, Amy.
I don't want space, I want my stuff.
You know where I live.
I need your opinion on something.
I hate these damn ties.
I wanted to wear a clip-on, but Lauren says that a man wearing a clip-on will never get elected Mayor.
Give me a hand? You should ask your wife.
How are things with you and Ella? I came here to talk about my blackouts.
Just wondering if anything's going on in your personal life that could be affecting you.
So, you saw a man die the other day, a man that you felt was innocent.
That happens.
Yes, it happens, but it doesn't mean that you're left unscathed, Ben.
I can see it.
Something happened to you.
I heard someone scream "help me.
" So I looked across the street, and I saw this big guy just whaling on this kid.
People were standing around watching, and there's this one girl, she even had her cell phone out, she was filming it.
So I ran across the street and I pulled the man off the kid, and he swung at me, so I swung back, and I hit him, like, two, three times.
Then he went down.
You're sure he swung at you first? Yes.
What did you hit him with? My fists.
You're sure about that? Does this look like I'm lying? So you're saying he wasn't killed in the street fight? I'm saying that your suspect may have delivered the fatal blow, but Glen Mason was in rough shape before those punches hit him.
He had a pre-existing cerebral edema.
Water on the brain.
Caused by? Repeated blows over time is my guess.
Damage to the skull that seems to go back to pre-puberty, before his skull was fully formed.
Well, if that's true, then Paul Keefer is not responsible for his death.
Hey, rock, paper, scissors? You take that.
I can't afford another divorce.
Hey, John.
Hey, you look amazing, grace.
All right, what do you got? I'm here to pick up a Jimmy Tapert and a Paul Keefer.
Attempted murder and manslaughter, nice.
They're in holding.
I'll let them know their ride's here.
Appreciate it if you could put a rush on.
I've got three more pickups en route.
All right, just come with me.
Here's your two parcels.
Tapert and Keefer.
They're all yours.
There are deep bruises on his wrists.
There's tissue damage to suggest it's been happening for some time.
I'd say someone took this boy, strapped him to an armchair, like so, and beat him, repeatedly.
How could a kid this big let something like that happen? When someone has power over you, they have that power, it doesn't matter how big they are.
What kind of strap? Leather What, like, a belt, maybe? What, like a belt, maybe? Leather I'd rather not speculate until I've analyzed the leather samples I've collected from his skin.
Whoa.
Is that a dead body? That guy's dead.
Yes, Ben, that guy is dead.
Now, if you'll both excuse me? Sorry.
Oh, yeah, that guy's dead all right.
Don't do that.
It's disgusting.
All right, idiot, let's go.
Where are we going? Excuse me? Can I help you? Yeah, uh, the cops called and they're looking for me, said they wanted to talk to me, but nobody's saying why.
Does this have something to do with my son? What, he get himself in trouble again? I'm sorry, what's your son's name, ma'am? Glen Mason.
Perhaps we could have a seat and talk for a moment here.
Why doesn't somebody just tell me what the hell happened? Well, your son was involved in an altercation in the street.
What's up with you today? Why are you in such a good mood? Hey, I know this place.
Hey, man, I know a great tailor, get that fixed in no time.
What? Why would anyone want to kill my son? I don't know the particulars of the case.
I wasn't the arresting officer.
Perhaps officers Lynch and Sullivan could give you some more information.
They've arrested a suspect in your son's murder.
This is Colleen.
This is Glen Mason's mother.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Mrs.
Mason? I-I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to, uh It was an accident.
I tried to get him off of a kid, and I You son of a bitch! I'll kill you! Mrs.
Mason I'm going to kill him! Ma'am, I need you to back up right now! Ma'am! I will kill you! Everybody back up or she's dead! Everybody back off! A shooting in a police station is something that doesn't happen every day.
How are you feeling about it? Well, I can't say I feel good.
People died.
Of course you don't feel good.
Can we move on from that? Detective, you know you're obligated to participate in this interview due to the shooting, but we can talk about something else if you like.
How did you feel when Jimmy Tapert grabbed officer Rossi's gun? I will kill you! Everybody back up! Shock, surprise, I guess.
Okay, put the gun down now, Jimmy.
Shut up, cop.
Where are the keys? Belt.
Uncuff us.
I don't want anything to do with this man.
Do it! Come on! Come on, what are you, stupid? Do it! Now lock the door.
Use the cuffs.
Okay, so help me out here.
How did Detective Sullivan get tangled up with Jimmy Tapert? Sometimes it's hard to tell if Ben is being extraordinarily brave Oh, hey Or just reckless.
Back off! Hey, relax, relax, relax.
What are you doing? Y-you're in the middle of a police station.
This is this is nuts.
Shut up! Look, dude, dude, dude, you are nuts, I mean, 'cause you don't have a chance.
Just put that thing down and relax.
There's a lot of nervous cops in here with guns.
I don't wanna die.
You don't wanna die.
Nobody here wants to die.
So why don't you put that thing down, so we can all go home.
What do you say? Shut up! I said everyone shut up! Just trying to help.
He's right, Jimmy.
That's your name, right? Jimmy? Yeah.
Just put the gun down before you do something you can't back away from.
No.
'Cause bad as things might seem right now, shooting a cop is going to be way worse.
You're seven stories up in a 10-story building full of cops.
You can't kill all of us, Jimmy.
If you let this thing get out of hand, the only way you're getting out of here is feet first.
No.
Hey! Do it! Lock the door.
Anyone else want to play hero? That's how you got that nasty gash? You don't think that was reckless? No, I don't.
Somebody had to do something.
You did something when you tried to talk Jimmy out of the gun.
Yeah, I find it interesting that you didn't mention that in your incident report.
Why would that be? Because, uh, it was nothing.
I mean, it's what any cop would do, right? No, not any cop would do.
You were in a room full of cops.
You're being modest.
You were the one who stepped forward and did something about it first.
Yeah, it was instinct, and and in the moment, and the circumstances, I just took 'em, or thought that Okay, so why can't you remember that? What do you mean? Ben, your report omits specific events that every other cop in that room was clear about.
Comment on that.
I mean, it can't all be modesty.
Look, I got hit in the head, right? I might have been a bit foggy.
Okay, but before you got hit in the head, you were not clear on how Jimmy got the gun in the first place.
That happened before you got hit, correct? Can you explain that? No.
Ben, you you're blacking out again.
Right? Maybe.
What was the last thing you remember? Being in the morgue.
Glen Mason's body.
Okay, so was there something about being in there, the case, seeing the body, that affected you? No, if it was up to Ben, we wouldn't even have arrested Paul Keefer.
You obviously feel otherwise.
Someone died.
Keefer hit him.
It's that simple? Yeah.
So why do you and Detective Sullivan differ on that point? Uh, because my partner's a pain in the ass? No comment.
Okay, look, Paul Keefer told us that he was coming out of a convenience store when he heard someone across the street yelling "help me.
" I just wanted the man to stop beating on that kid.
Why is that wrong? That's the problem right there.
He wasn't a man, he was a 14-year-old boy.
That can't be right.
His name was Glen Mason.
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but you're saying that Paul was scared? Yeah.
Remorseful about killing a boy.
Scared to go to jail.
You take a guy like Paul, facing time, seasoned cons, they'll smell the fear on him.
What's going to happen to me? You'll be taken to city jail and arraigned in the next few days.
A-arraigned? What does that mean? They'll decide whether you make bail or not.
Paul listen to me.
Paul! This is important.
Listen to me carefully.
In jail, don't talk to anyone, don't trust anyone.
Don't get involved in anything.
You just mind your business.
You hear me? We'll come to your arraignment, put in a good word for you.
Usually that goes a long ways with the courts.
Is there anyone you want us to call in the meanwhile? Wife? Girlfriend? My mother.
She worries a lot.
I don't want her to worry.
Done.
Seems to me that you were just doing your job when you arrested Keefer.
Well, doing your job doesn't always make it right.
But isn't it the job of the courts to determine whether or not a law has been broken? Yeah, but, I mean, those laws are made by people who've never been in a street fight.
In a street fight, you don't have time to say, "well, I want to hit this guy, but I don't want to hurt him.
" You go into it with everything you've got.
Nothing less than everything.
You try to take him out with one punch.
Okay, so you feel some sort of connection to Paul.
You feel that Paul Keefer is a good man.
A good man, did the right thing, he just got the wrong result.
Absolutely.
Well, pardon me for disagreeing, but for a good man, didn't he throw in with Tapert pretty easily? I'm sure it wasn't how he planned his day to go.
I said anyone else wanna play hero? She's next.
You.
Put him over there.
He's hurt pretty bad.
I said move him over there! You, come here! No, I want no part of this.
Are you deaf? I said come over here! She's a civilian.
Leave her out of it.
She's already in it.
Come over here now.
Come on Collect everybody's guns.
You expect me to help him? If you want to keep breathing.
And don't do anything stupid.
I find out you haven't collected them all, you get the next bullet.
You're not thinking things through, Jimmy.
You haven't killed anybody yet.
That pharmacist you shot, he may pull through.
Stop talking.
He's right.
Just take a breath, think about what you're doing.
I know what I'm doing.
Do it! Now! Put the gun in the can, cop.
You know I can't do that.
Put the gun in the can! No.
Let some of the people go, we'll give up our guns.
Not gonna happen.
Keep me, huh? Let the rest go.
No deals.
You move a muscle, I'll put a hole in your head! Hey, Jimmy.
Hey It's okay.
Let's give them up.
He's going to cooperate with us.
Right, Jimmy? No way, t.
C.
, I wanna go home tonight.
Terry, just give it up.
We don't want anyone else getting shot.
Good.
Next.
Get it.
Take it.
Her gun, take it! What, you looking at him for advice? Do you want to spend the rest of your life in prison? Because that is exactly what's going to happen to you.
Kid, you know what happens to pretty boys like you in the joint? Your choice.
You're either with me or you're with them.
Decide! You said you'd help me.
I will.
Help you? He arrested you! Take it.
You didn't kill that kid.
I did! Take it.
Take the gun! That's my boy.
No one's going to forgive me for killing a kid.
Zulu one in position.
Can you see anything? Unarmed suspect.
You're clear to cut the phone lines.
Maintain your position until you hear from me.
All right, make sure every exit is covered.
I want everyone in position now.
Go! Holland.
You're the one who called it in.
Detective Rhodes, my partner, texted me from the inside.
What's going on in there? Snipers tell me two cons got hold of a weapon.
Now they're holding civilians and detectives hostage inside the homicide unit.
Got any idea who might be holding the gun? Terry's text said Jimmy Tapert.
We picked him up on a murder early today.
He's got a long sheet.
What now? We're leaving.
And we'll take you with us.
And where are we going? Out of here.
Just like we were going to walk out in the first place, only this time, we're going where I tell you.
It'll never work.
Oh, for her sake, you wanna hope it does, cop.
Come on.
Come on.
You might want to take a look at this first.
There's a hundred guns out there waiting for a green light on you.
Turn it up.
Turn it up! We're in the parking lot of the 54 division where a standoff is happening inside the homicide unit.
Details are murky right at this moment But it's believed that a prisoner has managed to get a gun and is holding that unit hostage.
No details yet on whether there were any injuries or how just many hostages may be inside that unit right now.
Now, you can see the SWA team has arrived here They want bodies, it ain't just gonna be me.
What do we do now? Shut up! I'm trying to think! You, you, you, and you! Close all the blinds now! Move! Give me the keys to the holding cell now! I don't have them.
Give me the keys! Give them to me.
Everyone else, come with me.
Hands over your heads! Make your way down to holding.
I'm sure you all know the way.
Come on! You too! Go! Anyone moves Cap 'em one.
Come on, go! Move! Move! Inside, move! Paul You don't have to do this.
You don't have to go through with this.
Just hand me the gun.
I'll take it from there.
I hear so much as a squeak, I'll come back and blow your head off.
Sooner or later, Jimmy's going to do something stupid, very stupid, and I'm not going to be able to help you.
Shut up! Just shut up.
Just shut up.
I'm so sick of hearing you talk.
What's going on? Nothing, nothing.
Everything's fine.
What do we do now? He has no idea what you're going to do.
You haven't figured that out yet? I've got plans.
What are they? We wait.
We make our move when the time is right.
What about him? We can't just leave him here like that.
He's gonna die.
He brought that on himself.
What was Nick Ducet doing there that day? He said he was covering a story.
I thought maybe he was there to see you.
Why would you think that? Somebody say something to you? You work in a building full of detectives, Detective.
People talk.
Which people? Let's just say more than a few see a connection between you and Nick that's more than professional.
So you're saying Nick was there to see me as though him getting shot is my fault.
That's not what I'm saying.
I find it interesting that you interpret it that way.
What do you think we should do with you, tough guy? Just put him in the elevator and get him the hell out of here.
Is that what you think we should do, cop, we should send you out of here? I'm not a cop.
I'm a reporter.
And I'm not going anywhere until we all go.
I'm fine with that.
Just, uh don't go dying on me.
Don't be stupid.
You need help.
I'm fine, Amy.
Trust me.
Wait Are you two an item? - No.
- Yes.
No, yes, which is it? No.
I don't know, tough guy, how does that bullet feel now? I think you might've taken one for nothing.
So, what happen, buddy, she dump you? We're working things out.
Is that right, honey? What we need to do is get him some medical attention before he dies.
It's better for everyone if you get him out of here.
No one's going anywhere.
Call a doctor in.
Maybe we should, man.
Think about it.
Oh, so now you care about somebody else's life? Shut up about that! My son's dead because of you.
Shut up! You wanna use that thing, then use it! Back up, all of you! No one's coming in, no one's going out.
There is somebody in here that can help him, but she's in the lockup.
Okay.
Which one? Vina.
Ben He's losing a lot of blood, and he's burning up.
The bullet needs to be removed or he won't have long.
So then take it out.
With what? I need the right tools, equipment.
Then he dies.
They're just downstairs in the In my office.
Let me go get them, and I'll be right back, I promise.
Go with her.
She does anything stupid, shoot her.
You got ten minutes.
Get away from that window before some sniper thinks you're a target and takes you out.
They locked us in here, but maybe they never locked the observation room.
Take deep breaths.
Try not to look.
We'll be out of here soon enough.
I've seen this guy before.
What happened to him? He was in a fight.
Someone hit him too hard, and here he is.
Oh, my God, it was you.
I didn't mean to kill him.
This boy was badly injured before he ran into you.
Beaten repeatedly over a long period of time.
He had injuries below the skin that no one could see looking at him.
You saved him from a life of torment.
Doesn't matter what excuses you make.
I'm the one who hit him last.
Go.
Is there anything else you can tell us about Tapert? His background, his state of mind, anything about events leading up to this point so that we can assess the situation and make the right call? This guy shot an unarmed pharmacist in a daylight robbery and took off with all the drugs and money he could carry.
From the moment we picked him up, Jimmy was a real handful.
I didn't shoot anyone! Jimmy Tapert.
Robbed a drug store over on 4th, shot the pharmacist.
I told you I didn't shoot anyone! Shut up.
The pharmacist is in critical condition in Saint Joes.
Yeah, we found Mr.
sunshine here high out of his mind, with half the drug store in his pocket and a loaded gun.
I don't know how they got there.
Didn't I tell you to shut up? Hall, take it easy.
Take it easy? Look what he did to my jacket, man.
That's a $400 jacket.
Hey, hey, take this fool and put him over in the old interview room.
Thanks, John.
Put in the paperwork.
The city will pay for your jacket.
With all the cutbacks in the Mayor's office? Yeah, okay.
I'll be waiting years to get reimbursed for this.
Yes, well, maybe the next Mayor might be one of our own so we won't be waiting so long.
What are you talking about? Super.
Super's running for Mayor? Well, he hasn't announced his campaign yet If he is, I'm moving to the suburbs.
I came in early this morning, and he was in his office with some hotshot writing a stump speech.
That's the problem right there.
What does it say about someone running for political office if they got to rely on some hired-gun speech writer? They all do it.
And look where we are.
You ever see Dr.
King or-or Jerry Rawlings reading from notes? Did you ever see that? No, you didn't see that.
Know why? Because they spoke from here, okay? If you're going to be a leader of the people, anything worth saying should be heartfelt, none of this manufactured propaganda.
Hear, hear.
We're talking about super here, right? 'Cause so far as I can tell, the man hasn't had anything heartfelt to say in his entire adult life.
That's what I'm trying to tell you.
The man has no heart.
He needs to get on that yellow brick road.
Yeah, I think what we're really talking about here is the tear in that brand-new jacket of yours.
Do I need to remind you that whoever's the Mayor has a direct impact on the police department? Do I need to remind you you have a suspect in holding? Boo-yah.
So, uh, where were you? Why weren't you in the unit when all this went down? Uh Jacket got ripped.
I I was on my way to get it fixed, then I got the text from Terry.
I see.
Anything else you can tell us? Uh, yeah, I was on my way out when I ran into Nick Ducet, and he was He was getting onto the elevator.
Nick Ducet, who's that? He's this reporter dude.
Hey, Detective hall.
How you doing? Hey, I'm here to cover the story on the good samaritan killer that Amy and Ben arrested.
Would you like to make a comment? Door's closing.
Yup.
Hurry up.
Looks like he's getting worse.
Someone clear those desks and get him over here.
Gently.
You're gonna be all right, bud.
Watch his head there.
Yeah, got him.
In a minute I'm going to need the four of you to hold him down.
This is going to hurt, I'm afraid.
You're not going to use anesthetic? My regular patients don't have much use for that kind of thing.
Why not? She works in the morgue.
Is that where my son is? Yes.
Anyone got a bottle in their desk? Super usually has one in his office.
Where's that? Just over there.
Then go get it! Go get it! I've got movement in the northeast section.
White male, dark suit.
I need this off.
Steady All right.
Keep his hands down.
Here we go.
Hold him down! Hold him down.
Get him to drink as much as possible.
Look, no one asked Nick to play the hero.
Okay, so we can agree he was misguided, but it seems to me he saw you in danger.
He was just trying to protect you.
Well, that's the problem with Nick.
He's always looking to play the white knight.
And why does that trouble you? Because I don't need anyone to do that for me.
Because it means If he does something noble and brave, it means in his mind, it's the fairytale ending for him and me that he's looking for.
And in your mind, that's never going to happen.
We had a relationship.
We moved in too fast.
He got possessive, I moved out.
No matter what I said or did, he wouldn't let go.
He was phoning me, texting me, always showing up.
You want to know the truth? You want to know what I felt when Nick got shot? I felt relief.
You know, there, I said it.
I felt relieved that he might die and I might finally be rid of him.
Brace yourself.
Here it comes.
Here it comes.
Got it.
Got it.
That's a lot of blood.
He's going into shock.
I've done all I can.
We really need to get him into a proper hospital.
No.
We're losing him, Jimmy! You know what that means for you! Nobody's leaving.
Jimmy Jimmy, look.
Turn it up.
Two suspected hostage-takers are Jimmy Tapert and Paul Keefer.
Tapert has long been known to police and is considered to be extremely dangerous.
I knew when he had seen himself on national TV it wasn't going to be long before the shooting started.
Why is that? Tapert was a three-time loser.
Sees himself on TV, he's got two choices, spend the rest of his life in jail, go out with a blaze of glory.
What would you pick? I see your point.
Well, things came to a head pretty quickly once the phone started to ring.
We can't let it ring forever! You got to answer that, Jimmy.
You don't tell me what to do! How you going to negotiate if you're not talking to them? Shut up.
All of you cops shut up.
I'm getting sick of hearing you talk.
No one's answering.
Just let it ring till someone does.
What the hell is going on here? Jimmy Tapert got hold of the sheriff's gun on the way to the remand center.
How the hell does that happen? I mean, how the hell does a little punk take control of my homicide unit? You have any idea how bad this makes me look? I've got to make a statement.
Who's that guy? That would be our next Mayor.
I got a clear sight on area three.
Awaiting your orders, sir.
Feeding targets to your com now.
Where are you going? Why don't you just listen to what they have to say? You talk.
Okay.
Tell them no one's walking out of here unless I do.
Go! It's Ben Sullivan.
He's one of our guys.
The hostage-takers have authorized him to speak on their behalf.
He's one of yours, so you take the lead.
What's the situation? Anyone hurt? Nick Ducet is down.
Took a bullet.
All right, tell Sullivan if he can get the hostage-takers into the area of the bullpen outside the superintendent's office, we can get a clean shot.
All right, Ben, here's what we need you to do.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay, I'll tell him.
Tell me what? And don't lie to me, cop.
:" Well? The negotiator said he's ready to cooperate, but he wants you to send out some hostages.
No.
Before we start talking about hostages, I want to talk about what he's gonna give to me.
No, look, it's non-negotiable.
You've got to send some people out.
No, I do not! What the hell are we supposed to do now, huh? Well, maybe you should have thought about that before you killed my son.
Stop saying that! I didn't kill him! Liar.
Liar! He was already hurt.
Both of you shut up! Someone had been hitting him b-before I got to him.
She told me th.
.
It's not my fault! Why don't we figure out who did it to him so you don't blame me? Well, why are you all looking at me, huh? He killed my son! There's nothing else to know.
What kind of show are you guys running here, huh? He kills my son, then you let him get a hold of your guns, and now you want to blame me for it! You should be so lucky to go to prison, because if my husband ever got a hold of you, he'd whip your ass black and blue! You're nothing But a little weak crybaby Ben? Hey! Where were you just now? It's like you weren't even in the room.
I just can't shake the feeling it was my fault that kid got killed.
Well, you keep saying that, but the facts don't agree.
SWAT commander instructed me to move them over to the target zone and they could get a clean shot.
The last thing I remember is Colleen coming at Paul, and then I woke up.
Explain that, what you just said.
You "woke up"? I woke up.
Ben was just standing there.
It's hard to explain.
It was like he's Just quiet, listening one moment, and the next moment, he's going after the mother.
If my husband ever got a hold of you He'd whip your ass black and blue.
Black and blue Cry-baby, weak-ass punk! Whip your ass Nothing but a weak Cry-baby punk! Shut up.
Shut your mouth, you terrible, terrible bitch.
You knew.
You knew, but you have told that lie so many times, you believe it's your truth.
You stole your son's life Every time you did nothing.
You're crazy.
We loved our son.
You watched your husband bind him to a chair with leather straps.
Is that love? My husband did no such thing! We loved our son Shut up! Did you love him when watched him pummel him black and blue? Is that the lie you want me to believe? No.
No No, it's not a lie.
We loved our son! You don't lo a anybody.
Glen was a handful, and we only disciplined him when he needed it.
Sometimes they need a strong hand! You'd know that if you had a teenage son.
"We disciplined Glen.
" That just flipped out of your lips.
You're putting words in my mouth! And why should I listen to you, huh? Who are you? Some cop who can't even keep his gun! His own mother.
You make me sick.
No, we loved our son We loved our son! He's the criminal! He did it! He's the criminal! Where you going? Where you going, lady? Don't go near that door, lady.
Do not go near that door! I'm sorry.
No I feel bad that Paul Keefer got shot.
I know he wasn't your 9-to-5 criminal, but he had choices.
He made choices that led up to that moment.
We all have choices.
So I refuse to feel guilty about what happened there.
And you have no recollection of getting Colleen Mason to admit to abusing her son? No.
How do you account for that? I don't.
Ben, what was the last thing that you do remember? Being in the bullpen, Colleen coming at Paul.
.
Paul's fear.
I want her to stop.
And then you went away? So the last thing you remember is wanting her to stop.
Yes.
What's the last thing you felt before you blacked out? Helpless.
Just helpless.
Ben, have you ever witnessed that kind of abuse in your own life? Is it possible that that's part of your history? No.
Can we move on? Can you identify the bodies, Mr.
Mason? Yeah, that's my wife, and my stepson, Glen.
I want you to remember their faces for when you spend the rest of your life in jail.
