To Live or Die

Jefferson Parish 911 operator.
Yeah.
and the truck saw a body in the driveway.
He's laying on the ground? He's about 5'3.
" about 140.
255, I going to need crime scene.
Just saw him now.
He got a gun.
How you all doing? Should we call you Mr.
Steven or Mr.
Seagal? Whatever you want.
- Gun.
- Yeah, there we go.
We got to hook them all.
I said, "do you have any guns in the car?" And what'd you say? Two people shot in an armed robbery.
Life-threatening injuries.
I make a living in the movies, but for the past 20 years 11, 825, code 6.
I've also been a cop.
And along with some of the finest deputies on the force, I serve the people of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.
Code 94-G, shots fired.
my name is Steven Seagal.
All units respond.
that's right, Steven Seagal, Deputy Sheriff.
We're in a neighborhood that got hit very hard by Katrina.
There's several abandoned apartment buildings over here.
A lot of these apartment buildings are havens for people who do other serious crimes.
We have a mixture of hispanics and blacks living in this area here.
A lot of hispanics moved into this area because there was a lot of work here.
Sometimes they're referred to as walking ATMs because they get paid cash and they're easy targets.
People in this neighborhood are a little bit reluctant to call partially because they don't speak english, because some of them are undocumented.
Que paso? Que paso? We're working as hard as we can to set up a relationship with these people to make it easier for them to reach out to the police.
Crime is always gonna be part of our society and until people decide that human beings and the human life is worth more than a gunshot.
All units, stand by.
Be advised, two people shot at the location.
Whoa.
We rolling? Let's go.
Be advised, the two males were robbed outside the location.
Sounded like two people shot in an armed robbery.
King's Road runs right behind the little grocery store Across from where the Saver Center was.
You got me? Yeah, 10-4.
Whoa.
Come on, now.
Clear right.
I'm gonna cut through here.
There they are.
Where's the other guy at? He's right there on the doorstep.
Where's he shot at? Looks like one guy was shot in the back here, came out the front.
The other guy was shot in the front.
The ambulance is not here yet.
We're just trying as hard as we can To keep these guys calm till the medics can arrive.
Tranquilo, okay? It's okay.
It's okay.
All right, don't move.
Don't move.
>> These guys are in really bad shape.
We got to get them to the hospital quick, or they're not gonna make it.
Okay.
While the EMT's are working on the victims, we're gonna search the area for shell casings, try and establish where the actual incident took place.
>> We have a way of turning chaos into the calm.
I try to do that when a lot of things are going on at the same time.
I can tell you they were down here when they got shot, not up there, because you would see the blood trail going this way.
Johnny, over here.
It's a spent casing.
We just found a spent shell casing right there.
That's a .
45.
Yeah.
It's where the scene is at.
That boy on the steps look bad.
>> Let's get him up there.
Okay.
Life-threatening injuries.
.
45 caliber.
This is a mixed community.
There's people doing all kinds of bad things, but there's also a lot of good people in this community.
I think that these guys were good people, just working hard and somehow got unlucky.
It's just sad.
It's terrible.
Sarge, you speak spanish? >> What's going on? Talk to him, because he's the one that actually saw everything.
I see everything.
We don't really have any idea why these guys were shot.
We do have a witness who says he saw everything.
We have a translator on the phone right now, and we're trying to find out everything we can.
It was an armed robbery.
Two suspects came up on these guys, asked for their passports, their money.
They give them what they want, and they still shoot them.
Get a description of the suspect.
>> How many of them? Two.
Two.
All right.
Were they in a car? >> A Blazer? Que color? >> Blue Blazer.
Which way did he go? >> We have a direction of flight and the make of a vehicle.
We'll be looking all night for them.
Time, fellas.
Let's roll.
Man, believe me, that really pisses me off bad.
Where you at, Alex? Right behind you.
Don't forget, we're looking for a blue Chevy Blazer, Kind of old model.
All right, you might find them back here.
We're going in the direction of flight.
We're looking for that make of car, and if we see it, you can bet we're gonna pull them over and see who's inside.
That's for sure.
What you got? It looks like a little Blazer.
This one here? Yeah.
Well, see if you can see some guy with dreads in there.
We're gonna run up behind him.
You're clear right.
It's a blue old Blazer.
Two people shot.
It was an armed robbery.
Don't forget, we're looking for a blue Chevy Blazer.
We're going in the direction of flight.
We're looking for that make of car.
What you got? It looks like a little Blazer.
Supposedly the suspects from the shooting were two black males, and we're hoping that these are the guys.
Oh, he's trying to get behind that Blazer over there.
Let me just take a look over here.
That's a white person in there.
That's not it.
What a tragedy.
These two guys got shot.
Pray to God they make it, man.
Do me a favor and check on them and let me know, will you? I'll call the detectives, find out how they're doing.
Can you give me a condition update on the victims on the 34-S and King? All right.
Thank you.
That one guy on the steps, he didn't make it.
The other one's critical.
Terrible.
Really terrible.
Well, now that changes everything.
These guys are now wanted for murder.
Damn, that pisses me off, Johnny.
These guys could be anywhere.
All of our units are looking for the suspects in a blue Blazer.
We're gonna call it a night.
We're down here in St.
Bernard where, during Katrina, St.
Bernard got leveled.
Water was 12 feet high down here.
Think about that.
people are still trying to rebuild.
It's very expensive, very difficult.
There's a wonderful charitable organization called the St.
Bernard project that's gathering folks to rebuild homes, help them.
Johnny and I are gonna meet them over at this house and see if we can lend a hand.
How you all doing? >> whoa, dude.
What's going on, y'all? Steven, what's up, man? Welcome to our home.
Looking good.
Should we call you Mr.
Steven or Mr.
Seagal? Whatever you want.
What happened initially when the storm came? Did y'all stay behind? No, we left the day before.
Never dreaming once that you would be faced with this? No, we thought maybe we'd get a couple feet.
We didn't think we were gonna get eight feet of water in the house.
When we came back to the house, in our hearts, we knew that it was gone.
There was no more.
I pulled my mom's hope chest out, and when I pulled it out, it crumbled in my hands, and that's when I knew if that was gone, that meant everything.
All our pictures.
Little handprints and-- Before the storm, our house was family central, and that's what we're hoping to get back.
To us, it wasn't just a brick building.
To us, it was a heart.
It's a classic example of what we're seeing everywhere, nice salt-of-the-earth people who've worked hard their whole lives to have a nice little house and it gets taken away.
This is what FEMA gave us to live in after the storm.
We had four people living in here 3 1/2 years.
We stuck pictures up.
My granddaughters, they're in Florida.
We don't get to see them anymore.
They'll come back.
So what do you got, y'all? See if we can do some painting or something.
Well, cool.
That's what we were doing earlier.
Here you go.
I'm not very good at this, y'all.
That's okay.
Neither was I.
I don't even--I'm so nervous, I moved the camera.
I'm sorry.
Whew.
Man, this is so cool.
He doesn't even need a ladder.
That's not fair.
This is so cool.
In times of crisis, all people band together and support them and get them through these hard times.
When the house is done, where we can just walk in our house and close that door, that's all we're waiting for.
Looking good, y'all.
I'm really proud of you guys.
If you ever come down here to make a movie, you come bring your butt over here.
All right.
All right? Fix up some food for you.
Yes, sir.
Thank you so much for coming to our home.
You're welcome, brother.
Thank you.
You can see the gratitude they have.
It's my great honor to be able to be a small part of supporting them in any way I can.
Hopefully we're gonna be able to visit them again when everything's done.
Yesterday we had an armed robbery, a aggravated battery by shooting.
one of the victims died at the hospital.
The suspects were two unknown black males, both approximately They fled in a blue Chevrolet Blazer.
Unfortunately, the suspects are still at large, and my team would really love it more than anything to get those guys.
We really want to find them.
All right, everybody, go 10-8.
All right.
Larry, check out this car.
We're gonna take down that yellow Caprice in the left lane.
What he did? The driver's not wearing a seat belt.
The trunk lock is busted, could be a stolen car.
The dude in the backseat looked kind of nervous.
they knew it.
Turn the engine off.
Let me see your hands.
Put them on top.
Step out your vehicle, sir.
Please step to the back of the vehicle.
Steven Seagal.
Sir, slowly step out of the vehicle.
Back here, sir.
Can you get out this car, man? Where y'all coming from? Coming from work.
Sir, do you have any weapons or narcotics in this vehicle? No.
Nothing at all? It's okay to look in there, right? Yeah? No guns in the car? Gun.
Yeah, there we go.
We got to hook them all.
Hook them all.
I ain't gonna do it to you but for my safety.
Put your hands behind your back.
Whose gun is that? Me.
Yours? Yeah.
What'd I ask you? I said, "do you have any guns in the car?" And what'd you say? Alex, for one thing, he's only 20.
He can't legally possess a gun.
What's the probable cause for getting pulled over? You didn't have your seat belt on.
You're 20 years old, man.
You can't have a pistol.
But they ain't know I had it on me.
Where you bought that gun at, little daddy? I got it from my uncle.
We found a gun in the car, but he was just under the legal age for possession.
The reason you had that weapon was for self-protection? I had a rough childhood.
You had a rough childhood? At 12, my father got killed on the sidewalk.
I felt I had to protect myself or something.
Oh, so you bought it for personal protection? Yeah.
I work every day, sir.
Down here in the south, a lot of people carry guns, and a lot of them are carrying legally--I'm all for that.
I just want people who are carrying firearms to use them legally and responsibly.
I ain't tripping me, son.
I'm gonna take my lick.
I'm not exactly sure what charge I'm gonna go with, but if it is a misdemeanor, there's always a possibility that they can cut you a summons.
You don't even go to jail.
He's probably gonna have to seize that weapon.
You ain't tripping about that, right? I ain't even worrying about that.
You know, you my grandma's favorite actor.
Now, I'm hoping you ain't got no priors, man.
You got a misdemeanor.
You got nothing, baby.
80 to 18.
18.
Go ahead.
I'm showing no 87s and no priors.
Does he have any convictions--felony convictions? Negative, sir.
Negative.
All right, 10-4.
Thank you.
Nothing at all on any three of them, and the weapon's good.
Get them up.
Get them out their handcuffs.
See what I'm talking about? The kid says he got the gun from his uncle.
The gun came back clean, it wasn't used in a crime, and it wasn't reported stolen.
We're gonna clear him and let him go.
You're not old enough to legally possess that firearm, so to save everybody a lot of heartache, you a lot of trouble, we're gonna take the gun.
He's just a couple months shy of being legal.
he's a hardworking guy with no record, so we're gonna confiscate the gun.
You all ought to go get a lottery ticket.
Can I get his autograph? He wants your autograph.
Okay.
Can you write it to my grandmother, please? She have all your movies, man.
There you go, my brother.
All right, thank you, Mr.
Steven.
Y'all be cool.
You too.
I think this kid realizes we gave him a break.
We're happy we got a gun off the street without ruining his future.
21 in reference to the 30 that happened yesterday.
Sees the subject that did it As a black male sitting near a green truck.
Go code 2.
We're heading back over to the crime scene from last night where two guys got shot.
Somebody just called and said they saw the shooter.
Let's get up.
Get around.
Go ahead.
10-4.
We going.
Go code 2.
Get around.
Go ahead.
10-4.
We going.
Hold on.
That area's where we had the double shooting and the homicide.
We're gonna try to talk to the complaint to see if actually the suspect might still be in the neighborhood.
This is it right here.
You guys saw the guy? >> Yeah, my friend called.
>> He saw somebody walk outside.
A black male.
He was walking outside.
>> My friend's not here right now.
>> I don't know.
Maybe he called No, he called maybe from his car or something.
And what did he tell the police? He tell if somebody was walking outside.
Is that the one who shot? Did somebody see that guy who shot here? I don't know, maybe.
I'm not sure.
Oh, he's not sure.
Okay.
Thank y'all.
Thank you.
Good night.
78 to 85.
Code 6.
Because the caller wasn't home, We didn't really get much information.
They might be scared, you know? Yeah.
Their friend just got killed.
Wouldn't you be scared? And when they see a guy walking around that doesn't belong in the neighborhood, they just call the police, And that's what we're here for.
The good news is that they're calling us, because to be able to talk to somebody like that is gonna be essential in solving the crime.
There's a large hispanic population in the area.
Three of their occupants got robbed.
Two of them got shot, and one of them died.
And now their friends and family are scared.
So whenever they see anybody who they believe remotely fits the description of the guy who did the murder, they call us.
It may take a long time to solve this murder.
It's in the hands of the detectives now.
I just hope they get a break soon.
We're headed over to a housewarming party at the Ansardis', and the house is finally finished, and this is gonna be the first family gathering since the storm.
There they is right there.
Let's go see what they did.
Hello.
Hey, man.
Hey, how y'all doing? We're doing good.
Fine, thank you.
Came to see how you're making out.
Hi.
You cool, sugar? Yes, I am very cool.
How you doing? What's going on, baby? Go tell him hi.
Well, things sure look nice.
Hi, how are you? Good to see you.
How are you doing? These are just some of our family and friends.
Hi, y'all.
Can I please, like, shake your hand, something? Steven, I wanted you to see my kitchen.
Oh! Lord.
We can cook.
We have countertops, cabinets, everything.
It's great.
Man, looks great.
It's so nice to see the Ansardis, who've really been resilient and bounced back with a lot of love.
Many other families with the same situation all really bounced back, and it's a wonder to see them all do that and a pleasure to see them do that.
Well, I heard you all were still having some trouble with the yard, so we brought a little something to put in the yard now.
What? Oh, look at this.
Some roses.
Got a rose bush for you.
Oh, yes.
Some junipers.
A little evergreen here.
Look at this.
Rose bushes are perfect, too, because we had 50 rose bushes back here, and that's the only one that survived.
They had built the house in '63.
He planted it the day he moved in in '63.
How cool is that? Let's dig a little bit.
All right.
Well, we can do that.
I'm gonna see about planting this next to that plant that's been there since 1963.
That was the beginning.
This is the new beginning.
Everything slowly getting better? It is.
Now that we're in the house, Steven, you can see we have a lot of family and friends here.
There you go, baby.
Thank y'all very much for everything.
No, thank you.
Oh, man.
Thank you, bro.
Our door is always open.
Yes.
You represent good, And there's a lot of bad guys I've seen you kick butt on.
Thank you for the roses.
You're always welcome.
Bye.
Bye!
