The Arrangement (2017) s01e07 Episode Script

Trips

1 Previously on "The Arrangement" Wasn't sure I'd see you again.
Wanna try something new? I said no! I am going to lie down on your bed and then I'm going to let you do whatever you want.
Leave Kyle.
Come back with me to New York when this is all over.
We're not sleeping together.
We respect each other's artistic sensibilities.
- Megan, you're under contract.
- Well, that goes for Kyle too.
Lisbeth called him.
I don't want anything to get in the way of us.
- Will you just trust me? - Think I kidded myself into believing you were totally over her.
There's a woman outside my influence.
- I'm Detective Gaffey, LAPD.
- She has something on us.
Murder/suicide at the Institute of the Higher Mind, - ongoing investigation.
- How much do you want? - It's not money I'm after.
- She has a fantasy.
I cannot do what you're asking me to do.
I'm not asking.
I made you, but I will end you in a heartbeat.
Come in.
[dramatic music.]
[both moaning.]
[soft music.]
[sighing.]
No.
No! What is that thing with the hand on his neck? Did you see that in a movie or something? Megan, you've got to make him believe you or nobody else will.
You okay? Yeah, I'm great.
[soft dramatic music.]
[dramatic music.]
[moaning softly.]
[both exhale.]
[grunts, exhales.]
[soft dramatic music.]
[dramatic rock music.]
So the car will pick you up here, take you to the hangar, and they'll have you in New York in five hours or your money back.
Then we'll have a car pick you up at the airport, - take you to Middletown - Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Rental car.
Simple.
My friends will annihilate me if I get dropped off in an Escalade.
Something white and underpowered then? Preferably.
Anything else? Yeah, you ever officiated a wedding? No, I'm not exactly an expert - on relationships, so - Right? And yet my sweet idiot of a best friend wants me to marry her off anyway.
I have no idea what to say.
[Southern accent.]
"I ain't an expert on love "or what on God's earth "would compel two completely different animals "like a man and woman "to devote their lives to each other, "but I know what a home is.
"A home is where you eat, sleep, raise children.
"Where you feel safe enough to think about the future.
"That's what I see when I look at these two.
"I see home.
" [normal voice.]
Sam Elliot in "Long Desert.
" It's the second movie I ever did.
Maybe I'll use the accent.
[sighs.]
I wish I was going with you.
Timing on this Billy Rathburn dinner really sucks.
Yeah.
He's a great DP.
You'll be happy you stuck around to get him.
Yeah, as long as we have the deal in place by the time he leaves for Prague Sunday night.
You will.
And I'll text you when I land.
Flying private, you can text me whenever you want.
Oh right.
Anyways [soft dramatic music.]
[sighs.]
I have to go.
Slow down.
You have to give it a couple of minutes.
[groans.]
I have to go to Anaheim.
Somehow convince this MacPherson woman not to sell the story Kyle's been dying to direct to another studio.
DeAnn, you're not ready.
Trust me.
[chuckles.]
We took you way past your comfort zone.
You can't do that without going deep inside your head and reorganizing the wiring.
[chuckles softly.]
[soft music.]
Ten minutes.
- That'll do.
- Mm.
[inhales deeply.]
So how long has this been your thing? I have a lot of things.
I don't play the same role with everybody I sleep with.
None of us do.
Do you sleep with a lot of people? Is that important? Not really.
It's just what you did with me was so specific, and you seemed to know a lot about it.
I'm just wondering how you got there.
And what damage I must have endured.
If that's what it is.
Is that what you want it to be? Me acting out, you going along for the ride? Makes you an enabler.
Annika [exhales.]
I get that you make your own choices.
I'm just interested in how you make them.
It's probably not that different than how you and your husband make your choices.
We've chosen to agree that monogamy is unrealistic.
But experimenting with sex it's a completely different experience when you're older.
You shouldn't worry about me.
I don't do anything casually, and I don't believe in settling.
If I'm really interested in something, I pursue it.
Sounds so simple.
And now I really do have to go.
[kisses, sighs.]
What if you don't? Well, then Kyle doesn't direct his movie and the universe explodes.
Does it really explode or does it just open up? [dramatic music.]
[cell phone buzzing.]
Hey.
Are you aware that New York City has an up and coming theater scene? I have heard of such a thing.
Well, there's some real interest in putting the play on up here.
It'd be Off-Broadway, but I've got some solid interest from legit investors who haven't heard what a monster I am yet.
There's a meeting next week, and it'd be great if you could be here to hit them with some of that Megan Morrison razzle-dazzle.
You want me to come to New York? Yes, and don't complain because I know you can hop on a private jet whenever you want.
I'm gonna plead the fifth on that one.
Are you there? I'm here.
It's good to hear your real voice.
I've been hearing your monologue in my head for three weeks.
Come so we can have an actual conversation in person.
With the investor, I mean.
[sighs.]
I am gonna be back east this weekend - for a wedding.
- What? But I don't know if I can come into the city.
Shut up! Of course you can.
Megan, it's meant to be.
I can't do this without you.
[dramatic music.]
Get out of the way.
Avoiding me is not gonna help you, Kyle.
We have to fix this together.
With bullshit conversations and apologies, and you trying to convince me that everything you did was okay? I'm not here to tell you it was okay.
It was not okay, it was horrible.
And I hate that I had to do it, and I understand that you're angry, but I'm asking you to do what I'm trying to do, which is look at the bigger picture.
You can do this.
You've done the work, Kyle.
Locate your better self.
How hard did you fight for me? How hard did you try to make a different deal with her? Gaffey said you jumped at the chance to pimp me out.
Why? So you could remind me who's boss? Kyle, think about what you're doing.
This violence, it's a regression.
Maybe.
But at least now I see you.
You're a fraud.
Don't come near me again.
[motorcycle engine revs.]
Thanks.
Hey, what's going on? Hey, I, uh I know it's last minute, but can I go to the wedding with you? I mean, sure.
Yeah, of course, but is everything okay? Everything's fine.
What about your meeting with Rathburn? I don't have it in me to romance the guy.
If he wants to do my film, he'll do my film.
Kyle, last time you blew town on a whim, it was about the photos.
Is there something you're trying to get away from? No.
You're just the only person I want to be with right now.
[soft music.]
Okay.
[dark music.]
[sighs.]
- Sorry, bad time? - What is it? The mayor's chief of staff will be here in 15 minutes and you said you wanted to drop in on the facilitator training.
[soft dramatic music.]
[footsteps retreating.]
Huh.
You okay? Just realized the last time I was here.
Day of my mother's funeral.
You need a minute? Megan! Too late.
- Holy shit.
- [giggles.]
You're getting married! I love you, I love you, I love you.
- Oh, my God! - Oh, I love you.
[laughs.]
And you are better looking in person, which doesn't seem like it should be possible.
- This is ridiculous.
- Kyle, this is Tessa, - and she has no filter.
- It's great to meet you.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
- Oh, my God, look who's here.
- [laughs.]
- Mom, put the phone away.
- That's so embarrassing.
- Oh, honey.
it's Kyle West, sweetie.
I mean, he's used to cameras.
You don't mind, it's just for my Facebook page.
- Oh, hey, everybody.
- [chuckles.]
How's my daughter out of the bullpen? Hey, I'm great.
- Oh, geez.
- Oh.
- This is Kyle.
- Hey.
Ollie Flanagan.
- They got miter saws in Hollywood? - [laughs.]
Good.
'Cause you're gonna help me build a gazebo.
Let's go.
- I love gazebos.
- [all laugh.]
Where's Bryan? Oh, he's off with some of the boys.
I hate him so much right now.
I can't believe I'm marrying him.
Oh, stop, you love him.
I know.
He's great.
[laughs.]
- Hmm.
- You are somehow worried about your perfect new life.
You are pregnant, and you haven't told anyone.
Oh, my God, you're a witch.
[whispering.]
I am a witch, - and your boobs.
- [gasps.]
I know.
- Bryan is beside himself.
- Mm, I'm sure.
- [both laugh.]
- Let's go.
[soft music.]
[country music playing.]
Take me down By the roadside Hold my hand Sweet emotion [sighs.]
Done.
- [gasps.]
- [all laugh.]
You are a good sport, and you lose a bet.
[scoffs.]
I figured you would have hit your finger at least once or busted a nail or something.
You wanna see me embarrass myself, put me in front of a Ram's game.
I will yell my head off.
You wouldn't have to do any yelling.
Liking the Rams would be embarrassing enough.
- [cell phone buzzing.]
- Giants country.
- Mm.
- Ah, excuse me.
- My agent's calling.
- "My agent.
" Look who's gone all Hollywood on us now.
[chuckles.]
She's worse than you are.
Way worse.
[laughs.]
[sighs.]
You guys got a great place.
I can see why Megan spent so much time here.
So, in general, she's as happy as she looks? I think so.
Good.
Keep it going.
You don't want me to have to get on a plane.
[laughs.]
Oh.
"Please, Billy.
Please don't send me away.
"I was made for you.
Can't you see that?" "I can't.
"I can't take everything you gave me and Both: "Share it with someone else.
"It's yours.
It can only be yours.
" [both laugh.]
It's that movie.
What movie? Both: "The Opposite of Jessica.
" - What? Who? - Charlotte Banks? Oh, we probably watched that movie 100 times, and now I'm gonna be reading with her on Monday.
[gasps.]
Yeah, she's doing this limited series for Hulu and they had to fire one of the actresses, and her producing partner saw me in the play - and called Leslie.
- Megan, that's amazing.
Oh, my God, I get to meet Charlotte Banks.
[laughs.]
Fantastic! [laughs.]
I know.
Oh, boy.
I forgot how small this place is.
Your closet's literally bigger than this room.
[chuckles.]
That's fine.
Kinda nice for the weekend.
Oh, my God, look at you.
Oh, let me guess: braces, ombré hair, and a choker? - Yep.
- [laughs.]
God, you're in so many of these.
Kind of a second family for you, huh? Yeah, kind of.
Who are all these people? Um it's, like, high school friends mostly.
You'll probably meet them all tomorrow.
[laughs softly.]
Okay.
[soft dramatic music.]
[gasps softly.]
- Hey - [softly.]
Hey.
- Where are you? - I'm here.
I'm right here.
Okay.
I just wanna look over my speech for tomorrow.
Sure.
So, what're you gonna say tomorrow? I don't know.
I think I'm just gonna get really, really drunk and basically just wing it.
Yeah.
Mm, just whatever comes to mind.
"We are gathered here today for "Holy shit.
Look how fat Bryan got.
" Bryan? Really? Mm, yeah.
Sympathy weight.
He's just getting a head start.
It's sweet.
- Aww.
- [laughs.]
He's excited about the baby? Yeah, totally.
I mean, we both are.
[sighs.]
I don't know what happened.
I feel like all of a sudden the next five years of my life are planned out for me.
Sometimes it completely freaks me out.
So how serious is it between you and Kyle? It's serious.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, like talking about the future serious? Um, sure.
We've we've talked about it.
- Yeah.
- Yeah? And does he want to get married or? I mean, it's not like I have it in writing or anything, but, yeah, you know.
Why aren't you more excited? I don't know.
I am.
- Oh, I can tell.
- I am.
- You're excited.
- I love Kyle.
I do.
It's we've always had this thing.
This unspoken deep connection from the moment we met.
Like, even when things have been weird, it's pretty much always been there.
But you're worried it's not gonna last.
I don't know.
Everything's just moving really fast, and it's it's great, but sometimes I have this feeling like so much could go wrong.
I mean, we're just figuring each other out.
I still don't understand why Bryan likes Nickelback.
[chuckles.]
See, man? - Relationships are hard.
- [laughs.]
You know there's a picture of Rebecca on the wall in that room? Oh, shit.
She's coming to the wedding tomorrow.
- I forgot to tell you.
- Wait.
She's coming to the wedding? - Are you serious? - Yeah, her mom and my mom have been, like besties for the past year or so because of, like, spin class or something and so now Rebecca's on the wall and she's at the wedding and I am really sorry.
- Are you gonna be okay? - Yeah, I mean - I just didn't - It's not like she's with, you know, Evan anymore.
It's It's no worries.
Okay.
I love you.
And I'm suddenly exhausted.
You're getting married tomorrow.
[laughs.]
Oh, Jesus Christ.
No worries.
- It's a California term I learned.
- [chuckles.]
- I'm gonna go to bed.
- Mm-kay.
- Good night.
- Love you too.
[clears throat.]
[gasps, breathing heavily.]
[dark music.]
[hyperventilating.]
Jesus.
Your god complex should treat you better.
Well, for once, I agree with you.
When's the last time you saw the sun? I'm creating the sun, Terence.
Ah.
Of course you are.
See my god complex never lets me down 'cause it's based in science.
Give me a few minutes.
We'll get you set up.
[soft dramatic music.]
[indistinct chatter and laughter.]
I think if you take your seat, we might be able to get this thing started.
Got you.
Break a leg, sweetie.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
You okay? Yeah, I just didn't sleep very well last night.
Hey, you are gonna do great.
- Okay.
- All right.
["Orchestra Suite No.
3 in D Major" playing.]
Everyone, please be seated.
[clears throat.]
I'm so honored to be here with you all today and I am truly humbled that Tessa and Bryan asked me to help them take the next step in their life together.
I'm 100% going to cry during this.
Just so you know.
So buckle up.
[soft dramatic music.]
[clears throat.]
Whew.
A wedding is more than a ceremony between two people.
It's between all of us.
We all have a responsibility to foster and support the love between Tessa and Bryan.
[dramatic music.]
It's a dissociative enactogen.
Synthetic psilocybin, essentially.
Shrooms.
With no side effects.
Always good talking to you, Isaac.
[soft suspenseful music.]
[soft dramatic music.]
What the hell is this? Hey, this is your subconscious.
You tell me what it is.
It's a metaphor, but it's not very imaginative.
Classic story though.
The shepherd has lost his flock.
How is he going to get them back? I don't know.
I don't care.
This is not where I wanna be.
I know.
Through there.
That's where you wanna be.
[dramatic music.]
[soft dramatic music.]
Terry? Is that you? [footsteps approaching.]
Jesus Christ.
Where have you been? I missed you.
[whispering.]
I want you.
Congratulations, big man.
Thanks.
I give 'em a year.
Maybe two.
Then they'll both realize Tessa's way too good for him.
You're a good man, Ollie.
Don't make me cry.
[dramatic music.]
Tell me again what you're wearing to this thing.
Black? I love when you go dark.
What am I doing in Kyle's house? What? Sweetie, who's Kyle? I'm wearing the silver Versace.
I don't give a shit what Esme says.
I'm supposed to be figuring out where I went wrong.
Where's the dialectic? Terry? Terry.
This is a very bad trip.
Look deeper.
This is what you've always wanted.
[upbeat music playing.]
I'll have a white wine, please.
Megan.
Hey.
Rebecca, how are you? Good.
I can't believe how long it's been.
I teach social studies at MHS now.
10th graders.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God, yeah, that's that's great.
And you're obviously doing amazing.
- Oh.
- It's crazy, right? - We're all grown up.
- That is crazy.
It's just sad.
Evan could be here with us.
You know? He'd be really proud of you.
Excuse me.
[soft dramatic music.]
Hey.
Hi.
You gotta tell me what's going on.
You've been acting like this all day.
It's just being back.
It's a lot.
Is it okay if we don't talk about it? - Just dance with me.
- Okay.
[slow rock music playing.]
Where are we going? How will we know when We get to where we're supposed to be? Yeah we look and listen For something that's missing Keep on forgetting Just who we [music fades, dramatic music swells.]
Megan? Come rain, come shine Hey.
I am yours and you are mine - And day - [sighs.]
- Megan - I don't wanna talk about it.
You just looked at me like I was some kind of monster.
- It's not about you, Kyle.
- Who's it about then? Tell me what the hell is going on.
I don't wanna talk about it! I'm pretty sure you wouldn't let me get away with that.
Yeah, well, I guess life isn't fair sometimes.
Okay.
[soft music.]
It's about my stepbrother.
He, uh he used to come in my bedroom at night.
Do you understand? He told me not to lock the door and I didn't.
When was this? When I was 11.
And when I was 14 [laughs softly.]
He got a girlfriend, and [sniffles.]
all I could think was that I must have done something wrong to make him leave me.
And she's here.
[sighs.]
The girlfriend, uh, Rebecca, and she has no idea.
Seeing her brought it all back.
Where's he? He died.
He, um he fell in with the wrong people, and I just can't seem to get rid of him.
- Megan, listen to me.
- Please don't.
- Megan, listen.
- And please don't tell me that I have nothing to be ashamed of because you don't know.
[footsteps approaching, door opens.]
You two, come on.
Tessa and Bryan are about to leave.
Come on.
[soft dramatic music.]
Open your eyes Are you awake? It's time to arise The choices we made Open your eyes Say hello to your fate Some say the path's been paved And some beg for God to save them We don't wait for destiny We take it Now put on your pain [vocalizing.]
[mouthing.]
[vocalizing continues.]
Everybody wants to be kings There is no want, so put on the pain [laughs.]
What? What are you talking about? Nothing.
Oh, I get it.
I'm torturing myself.
That's what this is.
I'm an actor again.
The last time I felt like a fraud.
Terry you are the biggest movie star in the world.
Now we're gonna go to your premiere and you are going to knock their socks off.
Stop! I want this to stop.
[soft dramatic music.]
For some people, playing make-believe is the most real thing you could do.
But that's not acting.
You gonna tell me what acting is now? Acting is accessing real feelings and bringing them to life through the text.
You gotta have feelings to access 'em, buddy.
I have feelings.
Just not the right ones.
Sophie Marchuk died and I felt inconvenienced.
I know.
[scoffs.]
Connor blew his brains out in front of me and I felt relief.
And you're right.
I didn't fight for you.
Gaffey made her pitch, and I said yes.
I just wanted it to be done with.
I've built my life around helping people, and I don't care about anybody.
We all have a monster inside.
Right-size it and get present with your narrative.
Oh, you're mocking me now? Your words, man.
You created all this.
Including me.
Exactly.
It's all on me.
All of it.
And nobody will tell me how to fix it.
[suspenseful music.]
Tell me how to fix it.
I need help.
Help me! [choking.]
[soft dramatic music.]
You're holding on too tight.
Car's here, babe.
[sighs.]
Not exactly the way we thought the weekend would go.
[chuckles softly.]
You're telling me.
I basically built a gazebo with my bare hands.
[laughs softly.]
That's not all you did.
[soft music.]
You let me be exactly the way I needed to be.
You let me freak out and be angry and that made me feel I don't know.
Safe.
[gentle music.]
Exactly.
You're always safe with me.
Let's send an apology and a bottle of Glenfiddich over to Ken, and get lunch back on the books as soon as possible.
Did you still wanna speak to the coordinators tonight? No, and tell Claire I'm gonna run her workshop tomorrow.
The whole thing? Yeah.
Time to get back to basics.
Welcome back.
You seem rejuvenated.
Did your little trip treat you well? - It did.
- Good.
We need to discuss Kyle's directing plans.
I've been doing a lot of soul searching and I really feel that we need to rethink our approach on this.
Actually, I'm gonna leave that up to you.
You are? Well, you're the producer.
Do what feels right.
Unless you need help figuring it out.
[soft dramatic music.]
We all have different reasons for being here.
We want change in our lives or are looking for creative inspiration.
Maybe we're just here to please our girlfriend who's making us do this.
[chuckles softly.]
It doesn't really matter.
It doesn't matter why you're here.
You're here.
And the one thing that we all have in common, the one thing that makes us the same, is that we're all drawn to IHM because we want to move forward.
Right? We want to move forward.
Out of what feels stagnant and stale into something that's actually alive.
That's why we're here.
Now, usually, at this point, we'd go around the circle and share our stories but I'm gonna switch it up today, if you don't mind.
Sam why are you here? [quietly.]
I shouldn't be here.
I'm sorry.
A little louder, please.
I shouldn't be here.
You mean here at IHM or I shouldn't be anywhere.
You wanna die? Is that it? Why? Why do you wanna die? Sam, I promise you, whatever your story is, it does more damage buried inside you than if you share it with us.
Three years ago, this week my father killed my family.
Came back from work, he shot my mother, my sister and then he shot himself.
The only reason he didn't kill me is that I I went to a friend's house that day to get high.
[soft dramatic music.]
Best decision you ever made.
I've done nothing with my life.
I've done nothing to justify it.
And do you think about killing yourself? All the time.
Then why don't you just do it? Because I'm scared.
No, you're not scared, Sam.
You don't do it because deep down inside you know there's something worth sticking around for.
Because if you really wanted to die you would have done it three years ago.
So let me ask you again.
Why did you come here? Because I want things to change.
Yes.
That's right, Sam.
Change.
Change.
The universe decided to spare you and you have no idea why.
That's what you can't deal with.
And let me tell you something: I have no idea why either.
No clue.
But I can promise you this: over the next three days, we're gonna figure it out.
Do you trust me? Can you say that out loud? 'Cause that's a pretty big thing to say to someone if you really mean it.
[sighs deeply.]
I trust you.
Stand up.
Sam is the reason you all came here this week.
He's your change.
He's your inspiration.
And now you're his new family.
[crying softly.]
You order the Thai food and I'll find some really bad TV for us.
Done and done.
- Oh, my God.
- What the [dramatic music.]
[indistinct chatter over police radio.]
[cell phone chimes.]
- [phone swishes.]
- Stuff's thrown around everywhere, but everything seems to be here.
I don't know what the hell they'd be looking for.
Maybe nothing.
How is this possible? You have a security system.
It was on.
I made sure of it.
I'm gonna need the names of everybody else who has access.
Getting those for you now.
Your systems also out of date.
Someone who knows what they're doing could easily bypass that.
Maybe they're looking to make a point.
The point being what? That they can come in any time they want.
