The Brave (2017) s01e07 Episode Script

It's All Personal

1 [DISQUIETING MUSIC.]
[SHOUTING IN ARABIC.]
Mina You don't know what you're doing! - I was given a great chance.
- You're too young.
Your father would never have wanted you Father was a great man, and now I can be great, too.
And you will be protected forever.
No! No, no, no, wait, wait.
- No, no, no! - You heard your brother.
[CRIES.]
Get in the car.
[HAUNTING MUSIC.]
[SOBS.]
I I don't know if this is the right number.
I'm looking for Hamid Khedani.
You won't remember me, but you knew my father in Algeria.
He spoke your name with respect.
His name is Farid Bayoud.
[CRIES.]
They took Asim.
[CRIES.]
They're going to make my brother blow himself up.
I don't know who else to turn to.
Please.
I'm in [SPEAKING ARABIC.]
["FEEL IT STILL" BY PORTUGAL.
THE MAN PLAYING.]
[FOOD SIZZLING.]
Can't keep my hands to myself Think I'll dust them off, put 'em back up on the shelf In case my little baby girl is in need Seriously? You're cooking breakfast? - Grab plates.
- What are you doing? Forks.
Cups.
He's cooking.
And being bossy.
What is all the excitement about? I'm sick of eating your burritos, McG, if you can even call them that, and of Jaz's runny eggs.
Hey.
Hey, hey, hey.
Of eating food that isn't food, and of Preach's weird smoothies.
Hey, what's wrong with my smoothies? Look, guys.
It's Saturday.
Saturday, my mom would make us a huge breakfast.
Candied fruits, jams, shakshuka.
Say that last word again, please.
Shakshuka, McG.
Can you grab some napkins, please? No, I'm busy.
[LAUGHTER.]
She'd wake up at 5:00 a.
m.
and head to the farmer's market for some fresh cheese, some fresh eggs, and some fine herbs to roll into homemade bread.
Mm.
Mm.
I don't know.
What you got going makes me wonder what she was making the other six days of the week.
Well, our cook made all the other meals.
That's what made Saturday so special.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Your cook? Like a cook in your house? Yeah.
We had [LAUGHTER.]
You didn't just have a cook, did you? You had a whole staff.
Wait, I thought you grew up in, like, Lebanon.
Grew up in money, it sounds like.
My family has a construction company, and there are some real estate holdings.
It's time to give a little To the kids in the middle Okay, yes, there's money.
Hey! Hey! It's really good, Amir! It's good! [LAUGHTER.]
This is not done yet.
No one touches it until I say so.
[COMPUTER BEEPING.]
- Deputy Director Campbell.
- Good morning, Adam.
I need to speak with Amir.
Is he nearby? Yeah.
One sec.
Hey, Amir! Right here, ma'am.
Amir, Your CIA activation number got an SOS call this morning from a Mina Bayoud.
Do you recognize her name? Mina Bayoud? What did she say? [DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
I I don't know if this is the right number.
I'm looking for Hamid Khedani.
You won't remember me, but you knew my father in Algeria.
He spoke your name with respect.
His name is Farid Bayoud.
Not Farid Bayoud.
Ain't the same guy blew himself up at the hotel in Algiers last year? He was part of one of the cells I infiltrated.
They took Asim.
[CRIES.]
They're going to make my brother blow himself up.
I don't know who else to turn to, please.
I'm in [MAN SPEAKING ARABIC.]
[DIAL TONE.]
I tracked the call to a hookah bar in the St.
Vincent slums of Paris.
St.
Vincent? That area is rife with radicalized Muslims.
And the same ISIS cell that's said to have trained the Charlie Hebdo attackers.
Anyone spoken to French intelligence? DGSE confirmed Mina's message is consistent with information they're hearing about an imminent attack in Paris, but unfortunately, they don't have any leads.
This cell's a black hole.
But assuming that they abducted the boy, like the sister said, we're looking at 24 hours or less until this attack happens, which is why the DGSE has asked for our help.
- Okay.
Define "help.
" - They pledged all their operational support, but other than that, they'll stay out of your way.
That's my favorite kind.
Just to clarify: we're talking about trusting the daughter of a suicide bomber, whose brother is now also a suicide bomber? Seriously, I mean, who calls an ISIS operative to stop an ISIS attack? This cell uses disaffected kids to do their dirty work.
If Mina's saying her brother's being coerced into doing this, then it's real.
If the DGSE is saying that they are planning another attack, then they are.
And if I'm the only person with a chance to stop this Okay, so you're willing to go back undercover.
And risk your life, all because some girl made a phone call? What's the alternative, Top? We do nothing and hope people won't die? So Amir, for your wire, do you want to use our standard, everyday earwick, - or something different? - Nothing.
I wear nothing.
No wires, no cameras, no comms.
Amir, I don't need to remind you, we still have a bug on Rainier Boothe he doesn't know is there.
I'll know.
If you don't wear something, we can't guarantee your protection, which means that we might have to go in for a save that you don't need, which puts all of us, and the mission, at risk.
If we had six weeks, or six days, or six hours to prep this environment, I'd feel differently, but I've spent three years with these people.
There's no margin for error.
All right.
We'll do it your way.
[LIVELY MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC.]
[LIVELY INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC.]
- Don't say anything.
- [GASPS.]
[DISQUIETING MUSIC.]
Do you know who I am? You said your brother, Asim, was taken.
Do you know where? Keep washing.
All right, Preach, McG, you guys set? If by "set," you mean "waiting in the car, "like a couple sitting ducks, "no communication to our guy, hoping we don't get ambushed," then yeah, we're set.
A wise man once said, "Without struggle, there is no progress.
" If you don't have a little bit of adversity, you never learn to cultivate resilience, so Sage wisdom, Preach.
Top, next time, you're in the car with Preach.
Do you know when the attack's supposed to happen? How about who took him? This person, he's here? He's sitting in one of the booths, in a gray suit.
His back is to us.
His name is Omar.
[DISQUIETING MUSIC.]
Your father was one of the faithful.
He earned his reward.
Why don't you want the same for your brother? Martyrs only go to their reward if they're volunteers.
My baby brother doesn't want this.
They're forcing him.
He's doing it to protect me.
Why call me? In Algeria, my father listened to you.
Everybody listened to you.
Nobody will listen to me.
Okay.
Ya, sadiq.
Seat's taken.
My name is Hamid Khedani.
You took a kid called Asim Bayoud without my permission.
I didn't know I needed your permission.
Where is he? I've heard stories about your operations in North Africa.
This is Paris.
A man of your reputation doesn't come all this way to check on one boy.
I made a vow to his father before his sacrifice that I would look after his children.
Girl.
Come here.
You know this man? My father knew him in Algeria.
You asked him for help? I called because I was scared Asim was making his sacrifice for the wrong reasons.
The way Mr.
Khedani helped my father, I knew he could help Asim.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
[SPEAKS ARABIC.]
Have my car brought around.
[SPEAKING ARABIC.]
I will take you to see the boy.
Then you will judge for yourself.
[BASS-HEAVY ELECTRONIC MUSIC.]
All right.
They're on the move.
Jaz? That's Omar Galloul.
He's the cell's leader.
Unstable and violent.
Not good.
And Jabir Fergani, his main henchman.
Should we get a warning to Amir? He'll know who they are.
Can I get some audio on this conversation? Negative.
The weather's too bad.
The mic won't pick anything up.
Anyway, it looks like they're taking him for a ride.
Mr.
Khedani, I can't wait to hear what you've been up to.
Top, are we letting Amir get in this car, or are we taking 'em out? No, if we take 'em out, we blow his cover, we don't get the kid, we don't stop the attack.
We let him get in there and we may never see him again.
Dalton, it's your call.
We'll back you either way.
[SUSPENSEFUL ELECTRONIC MUSIC.]
All right, let him walk.
Everybody stand down.
bring the car up, we get to follow.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Command, looks like they're pulling into a warehouse.
We're gonna have to pull out on foot.
All right.
I want you guys to fan out around the perimeter.
Okay? I don't care how it looks.
I want you to assume you're being watched.
Be invisible.
If you get spotted, he dies.
Hey, Top.
Your pep talks need work.
Charming.
Your phone, brother.
I know your friends followed us.
Tell me who they are, and I'll make it painless.
You know I was Algerian intelligence.
- I wrote this manual.
- We saw a car.
A car, or cars? If it's the French or Americans, then it's gonna be two cars.
If it's the Israelis, it's gonna be three cars.
Which one was it? Your bravado is a good act, but if you weren't turned, how come we're being watched right now? Omar just pulled a gun on Amir.
Should I take him out? Top, you seeing this? Ah, wait.
It's a bluff.
Omar? You've done well here, but I'm neither of the things you fear.
I'm not a traitor, and I'm not someone who came here to feed on your success like a leech.
So what are we gonna do? Just watch him die? No one fires, do you hear me? No one fires.
That's an order.
You want to point a gun at me, out of caution? I get it.
But to let an animal like the one behind me do the same I find it incredibly insulting, and I didn't come all this way to be insulted.
I gave my word to a friend.
Let me keep it, and I'll be out of your way.
Put that down.
Jabir! This way.
If he goes in there, we lose eyes and ears.
Well, there's no way we're gonna maintain a visual.
Preach, see if you can find some sort of surface to use that laser bug on.
I'm on it.
[SOLEMN MUSIC.]
Risky place to operate from, don't you think? We move after.
Still.
With your profile going up, you need to be more careful.
I'll keep that in mind.
Stand up.
Someone has come to see you.
Do you recognize this man? He was friends with my father.
Top, I've got him.
It seems your sister is worried that you have not joined us willingly, Asim.
Mr.
Khedani has come to see if you are truly one of the faithful.
Mina is wrong.
I want to make the same sacrifice that my father made.
I've thought this through.
Mina will benefit from my actions.
I am shining a light on the powerful caliphate that destroys all who oppose it.
[POLICE CHATTER OVER SCANNER.]
I thought I told them to keep those things turned off.
[DISTANT TALKING.]
So.
You have seen for yourself.
The boy is willing.
Still, I respect the vow you made to his his father.
Take him.
We are not murderers.
His family has given enough.
Take him and go.
You're a good boy.
You want to stay? [WHISPERED.]
Yes.
You should.
Guys, what's going on in there? Salaam alaikum.
Alaikum salaam.
What the hell just happened? Amir's leaving without the boy.
- Jaz, get in the car! - So what? You just left him in there? The whole reason we came here, the whole reason you made us come here You were the one who almost got me killed.
Walking by under an umbrella? You left the kid in there to blow himself up.
- That is not what this is.
- He's 14! He's the decoy.
There's a bigger plan.
- You have changed the mission! - The mission changed.
That's enough! Both of you, get in the damn car.
All right, now, what happened? Why'd you leave the kid? It's not one bomb.
It's two.
When I was inside, I spotted rooms filled with ammonium nitrate.
You don't use that on a body bomb.
Across the hall, I saw pipes, nails, improvised shrapnels, blasting caps, and then there's what I heard.
[POLICE CHATTER OVER SCANNER.]
I thought I told them to keep those things turned off.
It's a police scanner.
From what I could tell, it was set to medical dispatch.
Right.
So the good Samaritan plan.
Kid blows himself up, he takes out a few people, then the first responders show up.
They set off a second, larger device that was set there ahead of time.
This time, they take out police, paramedics, - volunteers - Plans like that, kids like Asim are interchangeable.
If I pulled the child, they would've replaced him and the real attack would've still happened.
[FOREBODING MUSIC.]
All right, Deputy Director Campbell.
Looks like we got a new development here.
Seems like the boy's part of a larger attack on an unknown target.
We're still talking about Paris in the next 12 to 24 hours.
We'll zero in on possible targets, but that's going to take a while.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Rock concert, Dome de Paris, 8:00 p.
m.
tomorrow night.
Ligue 1 soccer game at Stade du France.
Doors open at 4:00.
Concerts and stadiums have been done.
This cell doesn't repeat itself.
Come on! It's Paris! There's gotta be a hundred festivals, conferences [SIGHS.]
Dalton, I have got to contact the DGSE.
There are simply way too many potential targets and way too little time for us to think that we can do this in less than 12 hours.
You have eyes on Asim, correct? Yeah.
Preach and McG are there right now.
No matter what, they stick with him.
If they strike out on finding out the bigger target, then they will take out the boy, and we hope that that's enough.
In the meantime, I'll figure out the endgame on my end.
You do the same on yours.
It's gonna be a long night.
Well, I'll sleep when you sleep.
Copy that.
A'ight, Preach, McG, did you guys get all that? Affirmative.
Got any movement over there? Nah.
Negative.
We know the what, just not the where and the when.
Maybe we just follow the kid.
If we wait, it'll be too late.
We have to find out where he's going if we're gonna have any chance of saving him.
You got any ideas? One.
[DISTANTLY SPEAKING ARABIC.]
Preach, do you think they just made us? Something must've spooked them.
[SIGHS.]
We got a situation, Top.
Top? Is the weather interfering? Sounds like the signal's jammed.
Hear that static? Should we go take a look? [BREATHES DEEPLY.]
Why not? All the girl wanted was to keep her brother safe.
He's a 14-year-old boy and Amir just left him there.
He didn't have a choice, Jaz.
Says who? How do we know that? [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Mr.
Khedani? Where's Asim? He's still with Omar's people.
I need to know where his things are.
- Did you see him? - I don't have time for this.
Did you see him? Yes, and I left him, because he's ready to sacrifice himself, and you wasted my time by bringing me here.
Maybe being undercover for that many years compromised his judgment.
Maybe risking a kid seems worth it to him.
Okay, trust me, Amir would not do that.
- How do we know that? - Hey, Jaz, do you ever think that maybe when I put a team together, I take the time to learn every detail about the person before I send them into harm's way? If he told you anything, wrote anything down, - I need it.
- So you make sure he dies, kills the most people? Anything he said, anything he was given.
Why would I tell you? Why did I even call you? If I have to get it in any other way, I will.
Here, take it.
You took his life, and that's not enough, so take this.
Take all he has and go.
[CRIES.]
Amir's kid sister She was a piano prodigy.
In fact, she was so good, 14 years old, she gets asked to play with the Lebanese Philharmonic.
First day of rehearsals, Amir's supposed to drive her.
Except he's a 19-year-old kid, right? So he has a he has a long night out with friends, and he asks her to take a public bus.
[SOMBER MUSIC.]
The bomb that goes off blows the bus into such small pieces, all they can do is identify the victims by their DNA.
So yeah, I would say the choice to leave Asim behind probably wasn't the easiest for Amir to make.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Clear.
All clear.
Where'd they go? Got a hatch.
Oh, look out.
We got a stay-behind.
[EXPLOSION.]
[DISTANT SHOUTING.]
That's a flashbang.
That's why they moved out of here.
DGSE must have alerted the GIGN.
BOTH: It's a raid.
So much for cooperation from the French.
[EXPLOSION.]
[SPEAKING FRENCH.]
You've got to be kidding me.
You asked for our help.
You said you would back off.
.
If your idea of backing off is torpedoing the entire operation by arresting two of my team members and losing the kid who's gonna wear a vest in the next 12 hours, the next time you call and ask me for help, you can shove it up your Ass.
You can shove it up your ass.
What? Dalton's back on line.
Good.
Dalton, what have you got? Well, Jaz picked up Preach and McG.
We still don't have the kid.
Still don't know where or when the attack's gonna happen.
You got any movement from the French authorities? No, we've got nothing and they've got nothing.
[FOREBODING MUSIC.]
I would love to tell you that there are some 11th-hour heroics going on here, but a cell like this, after a raid like that they go on autopilot.
There will be no intelligence for us to get.
There will be no communication for us to intercept.
We are out of moves.
I have to go see Omar.
I have an address for him.
I found it in Asim's things.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Amir.
With all due respect for your abilities, the DGSE raided that compound two hours after you left.
Omar is going to assume that you're the traitor Director Campbell, I know.
Which means, you won't be walking into the lion's den.
You will be walking into the mouth of the lion, disguised as a steak.
Omar thinks I'm the traitor, which means my arrival is gonna confuse him.
I can use that confusion.
I can weave a tale.
Tell him there is, in fact, a traitor, but it's not me, it's Jabir.
I can show him evidence: bank records, informant reports - from the DGSE - All right, so you talk your way past the first bullet.
Then what? Then I don't know.
We'll figure it out.
Top.
Omar has all the answers.
Where Asim's gonna be, when the attack's gonna happen.
- This is our only chance - Yeah, but that doesn't mean that we take it.
You heading back in there alone, that's a bad idea.
I won't be alone.
Okay, I got him.
I got him.
He's approaching the door.
Door's opening.
Hamid Khedani.
You're safe.
It's Omar.
Thanks be to God.
We have a problem.
I know, brother.
Inside, inside, brother.
I lost him.
They're heading up the stairs.
All right, I got him.
What do you think of the house? Crazy, right? I bought it from an old widow who was out of her mind.
Do you think she likes chandeliers? I have sources everywhere: people I pay in the US, in Germany, and here in France.
The raid was not some detective work.
- The DGSE got tipped off by - Jabir! What are you still doing here? I don't like it.
Something's up.
I was wrong about you, brother.
It's an hour and a half drive.
I'm on my way.
[EERIE MUSIC.]
Don't worry.
I've got Jabir on the move.
He's heading to the car.
All right, Preach, go with McG.
I want you to stay on Jabir.
See if he leads you to Asim and the bomb.
Jaz and I will cover Amir.
Okay, copy that.
Come.
I found the traitor.
Betrayal.
I know all about it.
I'm just glad her treachery did not ensnare you.
Mina.
Omar got Mina.
Yeah, I see her, I see her.
[UNEASY MUSIC.]
How did you find out? I caught her calling the police after the raid.
She named Omar, and you, Hamid.
She asked you for a favor, then betrayed us all.
All right, Jaz, it's about to step off here.
I'm gonna take the beard and Red Shirt.
I want you to take Omar and the boss.
Target acquired.
What are we gonna do with her? I thought about it, but I think it's best to just kill her.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Damn it, I'm blind.
All right, I'm still clear.
I want you to get moving.
Moving.
Count me off when you're in range.
[CRYING.]
You honored her father, and her thanks was to destroy you.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
It should be you.
[CRIES.]
No, no! No Jaz, status? 20 seconds.
No! No! 10 seconds.
Copy that.
The boss is your target.
[SOBS.]
You're the traitor.
[MUFFLED GUNSHOTS.]
[SHOCKED GRUNT.]
[MUFFLED GUNSHOTS.]
[GROANS.]
Yes.
- I'm the traitor.
- [GROANS IN PAIN.]
I have devoted my life to bringing down men like you, and I'm not going to sleep until all of you are in the hell you deserve.
[PAINED GROAN.]
Hey, it's okay.
It's okay, you're safe.
Who are you? Someone who cares.
Let's go.
Okay, we're coming out.
I got four tangos down.
Roger that.
You're all clear.
Dalton, we got trouble.
Asim is on the move.
Repeat: the kid is on the move.
Preach and McGuire are on his tail, but the kid's all strapped up.
Roger that.
I'm moving.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Still on Asim's tail.
Still not sure where they're headed, though.
Dalton? Yeah, we searched Omar's house, turned up nothing.
Mina says she didn't hear anything, either.
Are we sure she's secure? DGSE picked her up.
They're holding her in a safe location.
Asim's car is headed for the A6.
That puts him in the city center in 70 minutes.
9:00 a.
m.
, Sunday morning, what do we got? Can't be the concert or the soccer game.
Take those off.
Preach, are you close enough to Jabir's car to capture his GPS identifier? Identifier, yes.
If we can get the identifier, we can use that to track everywhere Jabir's car has been.
Maybe we get lucky.
Maybe they scouted where they wanted to bomb.
Good.
Okay.
Coming your way.
Capturing the car's telemetry.
- Come on.
- I got something.
The data mine shows three trips to the same location in the last three weeks.
It's an empty lot, but it says here on Sundays, it becomes a farmer's market and a carnival.
Dalton, we found the target.
Marché-Des-Fils.
Farmer's market.
They're going after families.
[BRIGHT CARNIVAL MUSIC.]
All right, every stall owner, every person pushing a stroller with no kid in it, anyone carrying anything that's way too big.
A second bomber is here in hiding.
We're running facial recognition on everyone right now.
What's Asim's ETA? McGuire's location shows both cars, two minutes out.
That bomber gets to the market, we're gonna drop him before he goes in.
You got anything yet? Criminal backgrounds? No-fly-lists? We got a teenage car thief who's working at one of these bakeries on probation.
A woman who shot a home invader, but her three kids work at the stall it's not her.
All right, here we go.
They're pulling in to the lot.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
McGuire and Preach, ready the shot.
On site.
No joy on the second bomber.
Are we letting this guy walk, or do we want to take him down in the car? Wait.
Give him a chance to change his mind.
I don't think he's gonna do it.
Plus we might trigger the second bomber.
[CHILDREN PLAYFULLY SCREAMING.]
All right, let him get to the barricade.
If he crosses that line, then we should take him.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC BUILDS.]
Asim's 30 yards from the entrance.
Top Still no joy on the second bomber.
Be ready to take that shot.
He stopped.
[MUSIC CALMS.]
Amir's right.
He's not gonna do it.
Jabir's gonna make him do it, or he's gonna make a scene.
Either way, that second bomber is gonna know.
He's backing up.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
My 11 o'clock.
Yellow apron, white truck.
Fruit stall.
That's the main bomber.
[SPEAKING ARABIC.]
[SPEAKING ARABIC.]
Jabir's got a second trigger.
[MUFFLED GUNSHOTS.]
Jabir neutralized.
Top, I don't have a shot.
Top, I don't have a shot.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[GUNSHOT.]
Got him.
Got him, I got him, I got him.
Put that down.
French police are pulling in.
[SOMBER MUSIC.]
All right, that's it.
Trigger's disabled.
Target's down.
We're outta here.
Looks like Amir's instincts were right.
Yeah, but his cover was blown.
Can never go under again.
Not necessarily.
Everybody that knew Amir was under died in Omar's house.
Plus, the DGSE has Omar pinned as the traitor.
But you're forgetting one person: Mina.
She knows his identity.
That girl's gonna keep his cover till the day she dies.
French intelligence will be here any minute to take you to the airport.
Papers that will get you to America, contacts of everyone who will assist you in the process.
There'll be food, shelter, clothes And Asim? Asim was taken against his will.
He was surrendering when the French police arrived.
That's good.
He also volunteered essential information about the cell.
That's also good.
It's gonna take some time, but the French owe us a favor, and you'd be surprised what my friends in DC can do.
Build a home, make a life, and Asim will join you, I promise.
Thank you.
No, Mina.
Thank you.
The, um the team member you replaced his name was Elijah Vallins.
He pulled off more crazy things than anyone I've ever worked with.
And then, one day, he walks in the wrong door, and that's it.
The The thing is, I was right behind him.
I caught him when he fell.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
So, uh, you know, you being undercover like that, it probably pushed some buttons I didn't know I had.
A girl in trouble who I thought I couldn't help.
Maybe that pushed some buttons too.
So Has your mom ever made you a traditional breakfast before? My mom? Let's just say she wasn't a traditional anything.
Yeah, I can see that.
[ROCK MUSIC.]
Baby, baby, what a crying shame Anybody want some more? I got some left over.
More? I don't think I'll ever eat again.
LET'S BE CLEAR: You're on breakfast detail every day from now on, Amir.
Seriously, man.
You ot any more of that shakakan? [LAUGHS.]
Shakshuka.
Bring it over.
[LAUGHTER.]
[GROANS.]
