It matters because the Rip that you opened
took my mum from me.
[sighs]
You know, when I first met Sherlock,
he was unknown.
I was the one who saw greatness in him.
We moved in together.
Began working cases for the police.
His flaws and foibles were many,
but they were my domain.
I understood how to keep him focused.
So, as his reputation grew…
I took pride in that.
Sherlock Holmes is not the work
of one man, but of two.
His successes were my own.
But as his star rose…
he began to…[exhales shakily]
to drift away from me.
I needed to find a way
to show him that I, too,
was a man capable of…
greatness.
You opened the Rip to impress him?
I wasn't trying to open a Rip.
I only intended to make contact
with the spirit world.
I thought if I was the first one to do it,
he would see--
Why did you save him
and not my mum at the Rip?
Your mother didn't just manage
his flaws and foibles,
she soothed something deep within him.
A place I could never reach.
My mum shouldn't have been
soothing Sherlock,
he should've been soothing her.
You talk about his greatness,
about your greatness.
How can men be so obsessed by it,
yet never see when a woman has it?
Do you not think I know that?
How could I ever compete?
Do you not think…
that watching them fall deeper in love,
every touch they shared, every smile.
Do you not think…
I just, I just wanted him to see me.
Why did you save him and not her?
I didn't make a choice either way,
I just acted--
Why did you save him and not her?
When two people work together
for so long, a bond forms.
[sputtering] We were inseparable.
Tell me why you didn't save my mum!
Because I love him!
Because I've always loved him!

The devil has arrived in London.
[opening theme music playing]
[Sherlock] When I arrived
down by the harbor…
a dock worker
was carrying her in his arms.
He said this, this visitor from America,
this Linen Man,
as Jessie called him, he did this,
and then he touched another dock worker
who instantly took his own life.
What did he do to her?
Her pulse is up, she's perspiring and…
her eyeballs suggest
she's in a state of unconsciousness
populated by dreams.
Or in this case, nightmares.
He's trapped her in there.
Who is he, Sherlock?
I don't know, John.
I was hoping you could tell me.
I have no idea.
[laughs incredulously]
It's not him, Sherlock.
I know a lot of stuff
has happened between you both,
but what's happening now
has got nothing to do with the doctor.
[Sherlock] He's an Ipsissimus.
He has to be.
If he has the same powers
as Jessie, as Alice,
he can access your greatest fears,
your worst memories,
destroy you with them.
Why is he here? Why is he doing this?
The Rip.
An Ipsissimus like him?
He'd have the skill
to harness all of its power.
He will become a god in this world.

-How quickly can you get us to Bedlam?
-Yeah.
Come with me.
Well done, Beatrice.
Nice work.

But you and I are more evolved than that.
We will bring order to this world.
What do you mean, "we"?
[the Linen Man]
Why do you think I didn't kill you?
I have a son.
He's an Ipsissimus also.
-You will have a family with him.

a dynasty of Ipsissimi,
who will rule over men
long after I'm gone.

We saw some appalling sights
on the way over to the palace.
[slurps tea]
So, the journey over here
was rather eventful.
My sister, Emma,

the cat got out
of his little cage and disappeared.
In the end, we had to get on the ship

he was unknown.
I was the one who saw greatness in him.
We moved in together.
Began working cases for the police.
His flaws and foibles were many,
but they were my domain.
I understood how to keep him focused.
So, as his reputation grew…
I took pride in that.
Sherlock Holmes is not the work
of one man, but of two.
His successes were my own.
But as his star rose…
he began to…[exhales shakily]
to drift away from me.
I needed to find a way
to show him that I, too,
was a man capable of…
greatness.
You opened the Rip to impress him?
I wasn't trying to open a Rip.
I only intended to make contact
with the spirit world.
I thought if I was the first one to do it,
he would see--
Why did you save him
and not my mum at the Rip?
Your mother didn't just manage
his flaws and foibles,
she soothed something deep within him.
A place I could never reach.
My mum shouldn't have been
soothing Sherlock,
he should've been soothing her.
You talk about his greatness,
about your greatness.
How can men be so obsessed by it,
yet never see when a woman has it?
Do you not think I know that?
How could I ever compete?
Do you not think…
that watching them fall deeper in love,
every touch they shared, every smile.
Do you not think…
I just, I just wanted him to see me.
Why did you save him and not her?
I didn't make a choice either way,
I just acted--
Why did you save him and not her?
When two people work together
for so long, a bond forms.
[sputtering] We were inseparable.
Tell me why you didn't save my mum!
Because I love him!
Because I've always loved him!
[breathing heavily]
[sighs]
That's why you opened the Rip.
And that's why you saved him
and that's why you still look after him.
No.
No, a man like you isn't capable of love.
You're too cold for it.
Why do you think it is
that you're all alone?
I'm all alone?
[scoffs]
Where are all your friends, then?
[door slams open]
[Sherlock] John!
[door closes]
John, where the hell are you?
[Bea] What happened to her?
-Jessie!
-Here.
Jessie! Jessie!
What happened?
The devil has arrived in London.
[opening theme music playing]
[Sherlock] When I arrived
down by the harbor…
a dock worker
was carrying her in his arms.
He said this, this visitor from America,
this Linen Man,
as Jessie called him, he did this,
and then he touched another dock worker
who instantly took his own life.
What did he do to her?
Her pulse is up, she's perspiring and…
her eyeballs suggest
she's in a state of unconsciousness
populated by dreams.
Or in this case, nightmares.
He's trapped her in there.
Who is he, Sherlock?
I don't know, John.
I was hoping you could tell me.
I have no idea.
[laughs incredulously]
It's not him, Sherlock.
I know a lot of stuff
has happened between you both,
but what's happening now
has got nothing to do with the doctor.
[Sherlock] He's an Ipsissimus.
He has to be.
If he has the same powers
as Jessie, as Alice,
he can access your greatest fears,
your worst memories,
destroy you with them.
Why is he here? Why is he doing this?
The Rip.
An Ipsissimus like him?
He'd have the skill
to harness all of its power.
He will become a god in this world.
A god… of nightmares.
[Jessie screams]
[screams echoing]
[the Linen Man]
You think you've lost them,
but the plague doctors
can smell you, Jessica,
and they're coming for you.
[loud thud]
[the Linen Man] There is no way out now.
Remember last time?
This time when they find you,
they'll kill you.
Why have you done this to me?
[indistinct murmuring]
I thought I could trust you.
[the Linen Man] I befriended you
because I needed you to find the Rip,
but you weren't strong enough, were you?
When I find the Rip, I will have access
to all its power, Jessica.
There will be no more monsters.
You're a monster.
[the Linen Man] No.
Normal men are the monsters.
I have glimpsed the horrors
men will bring in the centuries to come.
[Jessie gasps]
[the Linen Man] All these atrocities
come about for one reason only.
Fear.
If you can make a man afraid,
you can control him.
[screaming]
So, if we don't find the Rip
and close it, we're doomed.
And if we don't find it
before the Linen Man, we're doomed.
[violin strings strumming]
What are you doing?
I'm doing something.
Thinking.
[continues strumming]
If looked at from another angle,
it'd be a good thing.
[Bea] A good thing?
-How's that, then?
-[Sherlock] Well…
Currently we have no way
of finding the Rip.
But now we have a master Ipsissimus
who's gonna find it for us.
Find it for us?
So, what's the plan?
[continues strumming]
Okay, okay.
I propose,
given the state of everything, that we…
That we stay here
and wait for something to happen.
-That's your plan?
-Yeah.
Wait for something to happen?
[Sherlock] I'm telling you.
Is this what you were talking about
earlier about him being brilliant?
'Cause this is gold. Just pure gold.
-[door opens]
-[man] Mr. Holmes! Dr. Watson!
Uh, apologies
for the intrusion, gentlemen.
Inspector Gregson needs you
down at the Yard. Immediately.
Yes.
[Bea] I'll find him, Jessie.
[whispers] I'll save you.
See? I said to wait for
something to happen and it happened.
You saw him out the window, Sherlock.
Doesn't mean anything.
We can still be brilliant, John.
And we have to be.
We owe it to Beatrice and Jessica.
[Louise] I said it would end in tears.
What did you expect?
That you could run away
and live on the streets for a while?
Bring some random girl back
and move her into the palace?
Maybe I thought I could be normal.
Maybe all those years I was sitting
in this godforsaken room
dreaming of how it'd feel to have friends.
How it would feel to be someone else.
Well…
you can't be someone else.
None of us can.
Do yourself a kindness and accept it.
[door opens]
[footsteps approaching]
Ma'am.
[door opens]
[door closes]
[Daimler] Sir.
The Queen has asked me to tell you
that cousin Helena will be visiting
the palace this afternoon.
She's passing through the country
on a European tour
and Her Majesty felt
it would be a good idea for you to meet.
Her Majesty heard the news
that Helena's in search of a suitor.
[grunts softly]
And how did she learn that news?
I don't know, Your Highness.
Get out.
Sir.
[door opens]
[officer] You got two minutes.
[man coughs]
Hey. Psst.
All right, big man?
I've been better, to be honest, mate.
Hey, listen.
A guy came looking for Leo,
from the palace.
Buckingham Palace.
-What?
-Because that is where Leopold lives.
What?
He lives there because his mum
is the Queen of England.
You're shitting me.
The Queen has, like, 50 kids, all right?
He's one of them.
Leopold, aka Prince Leopold.
Jesus. Just when I thought
he couldn't be more of a bellend.
[indistinct chatter]
I'm going up in front of a judge tomorrow
to set a date for my trial.
They can't send you to prison
for defending yourself.
Yeah, I don't think prison's
what they've got in mind for me, mate.
No.
He's one of them, Spike.
Master of a workhouse.
You can't hurt one
and live to talk about it.
-Yeah, but--
-And who cares?
If that Rip stays open,
there won't be a city left to live in,
let alone a gallows for me to hang from.
But that's why I'm here, Bill.
I'm getting us back together.
That's the thing about us!
When one of us is missing, we're crap!
What are you gonna do?
[scoffs]
Break me out of a police cell?
I hate to say it,
but you sound like a kid.
-You absolute wanker.
-What are you on about?
This is what I'm on about.
You're the muscles!
Jessie's the soul…
Leo's the brain and Bea's the heart.
What's Spike?
The mouth?
I'm the fricking skeleton.
The most important part,
the one that keeps us all together.
-I never get any recognition for it.
-I'm sorry.
No, just…
All I'm saying is
there are some things you can't fix.
Doesn't matter
how good a skeleton you are.
I am gonna fix it.
You've been a good pal, Spike.
I honestly
couldn't have asked for a better one.
[bell tolling]
-[Watson] Sherlock.
-[Sherlock] Oh, God.
[Watson] Stay sharp. Hello?
[Gregson] Sherlock!
Christ. You look bloody terrible.
Well, you picked
a lovely time to reappear.
Someone broke in
and made their way down to the archives.
They took the files for the cases
you and your friends have worked on.
Linen suit?
[Gregson] Friend of yours?
[Watson] Not yet,
but we're very keen to meet him.
He walked straight up
to the reception clerk, touched his arm.
He bashed his own brains out
against the wall.
[Watson] My God.
[Gregson] Then he made his way
to the security officer, who…
Well…
A war veteran,
reduced to a gibbering wreck.
He's been like this ever since.
We need to work out
why he wanted the case files.
Uh…
Well, uh…
p-perhaps the…
Perhaps the files--
-You don't have to work it out--
-No, I just… I just need a minute.
I ju-- No, I just--
He's looking for a monster.
Jessie said the location
of the Rip was in their minds.
There's a handful of monsters,
but finding one in a city of five million
would be like
looking for a needle in a haystack,
unless you knew the exact location of one.
Arthur Hilton. The Bird Master.
-How quickly can you get us to Bedlam?
-Yeah.
Come with me.
Well done, Beatrice.
Nice work.
[the Linen Man] Do you believe me now
about normal men?
But you and I are more evolved than that.
We will bring order to this world.
What do you mean, "we"?
[the Linen Man]
Why do you think I didn't kill you?
I have a son.
He's an Ipsissimus also.
-You will have a family with him.
-[crying]
[the Linen Man] You will create
a dynasty of Ipsissimi,
who will rule over men
long after I'm gone.
No! You're crazy!
-[indistinct growling]
-[footsteps thudding]
[the Linen Man] I told you
they'd find you.
[gasps]
[the Linen Man] Run and hide, Jessica.
Run and hide.
[scream echoes]
Whoa, whoa.
[guard] Halt! In the name of Her Majesty!
[Spike] Oh, bollocks.
[cutlery clinking]
[Helena] Horrible business
with this rioting in the city.
We saw some appalling sights
on the way over to the palace.
[slurps tea]
So, the journey over here
was rather eventful.
My sister, Emma,
insisted in bringing her cat,
but when we got to Rotterdam,
the cat got out
of his little cage and disappeared.
In the end, we had to get on the ship
because it was about to leave.
She's sobbing, wailing.
And she looks in the cage…
[gasps] and the cat is in there.
He must've snuck back in.
Must have.
Marie said you'd probably be boring.
-I'm not boring.
-Really?
Because you seem pretty boring.
I mean, the cat story
wasn't the best story in the world,
but we don't know each other.
I can't start with tales
of drunken debauchery, can I?
The cat story was fine.
You're already in love, aren't you?
I can tell by the look in your eye.
So am I.
His name's Henrik.
He is a clerk at the court in Münster.
You're shocked I'd fall
for a commoner, aren't you?
Perhaps.
And you're just going along with this?
It's what's best for my country.
That's what duty is.
One only feels duty
to the things one cares about,
and I don't care about anything.
So, if we marry,
you do realize they'll want children.
-Which means sex.
-I know how children are made.
Well, please try
and get some practice in before we marry.
-I-I've done it before.
-Good.
I don't want to spend my life with a man
who doesn't know his way
around the female form.
Don't presume we're going to marry.
[chuckles softly]
I'm going to do everything
in my power to see that we don't.
Enjoy the rest of your evening.
Excuse me.
Practice, Leopold! I mean it!
[chuckles incredulously]
[the Linen Man] Stay hidden, Jessica,
or they'll choke the breath out of you.
[Jessie] You trapped me here
because you know
I'm the only one who can stop you.
But why would
you stay in my head like this?
What was it you said to me?
"If you can keep a person afraid,
then you can control them."
[chuckles softly]
Fear.
It's fear that's
keeping me here, isn't it?
The plague doctors… I need to face them.
That's how I end this.
[the Linen Man] I told you
there's no way out.
You can pretend all you want,
Jessica, but I can feel your fear.
Where is this? What is this place?
[the Linen Man] You know what
your greatest fear is, don't you?
That people will realize you're a freak.
-[Bea] You're a mess, Jessie!
-[Sherlock] Scared of your visions.
-You're both monstrosities.
-[Bea] You're falling to pieces!
No.
[the Linen Man] Yes.
You were abandoned by your father.
Now look at you.
Abandoned by your friends.
And that's because you're a freak.
[Jessie gasping]
Because there's something so wrong
about you, because you're so unsavory.
Because you're so unlovable,
so disgusting.
[Jessie crying]
[inmate shouting]
[Renfield] Inspector Gregson. Follow me.
Arthur has the whole wing to himself.
[Gregson] Dr. Renfield, we need rifles.
And position two guards on the roof.
Tell 'em to send word
when a man in a linen suit
arrives at the hospital.
I can't just let random--
This man is coming here
whether you like it or not.
If you want to survive the night,
don't stand in his path.
Beatrice.
Time for you to speak
to your old acquaintance.
[Arthur] They won't let me have a window.
On account of the birds.
Yeah, I… I figured.
We need your help.
There's a man coming, Arthur.
A bad man.
He's gonna try and get into your head
and find out where the Rip is.
I don't know what that is. A Rip?
It's where your powers came from.
The things you did were terrible, Arthur.
But I know how these powers twist people,
because I know you're really a good man.
Once he's been in your head…
we want you to put him under.
Honestly, I could take you to some taverns
where the music plays until morning.
You know, afterwards we could
go on a little walk down by the river.
I'd commission an oarsman.
You know, take us out on the water,
watch the sun rise
while we have some breakfast.
[inhales sharply]
I like you.
Of course you do.
Your eyes ain't painted on.
[both chuckle]
Spike. What are you doing here?
Your sister let me in.
You didn't tell me you had
such a… charming sibling.
You didn't really tell us anything
about yourself, though, did ya?
Louise, give Spike and I
a few moments alone, would you?
-But we were just having a conversation--
-Louise.
[Louise] Hmm.
Mmm.
The city is getting destroyed.
If we don't find this Rip, and pronto,
that dear old mum of yours, mate,
she won't have a kingdom to rule over.
I used to look out of this window
and wonder what excitement
I was missing out on.
It didn't take me long to realize
that London is a cruel city.
It's treated you and your friends terribly
and yet here you are trying to save it.
Me and my friends?
So what, you're not part of us anymore?
I'm not sure I ever was.
Maybe I just enjoyed
being someone else for a while.
So, it was all a big act?
[scoffs]
Bullshit.
I had to pretend to be someone else
to hang around with you all.
You'd have never have liked me
if you knew who I was.
Perhaps you should leave
before I have you removed.
Before I go…
I just wanna hear you say it.
Tell me you're not my mate.
Don't be stupid.
You're not my friend.
And that Jessie's not your friend.
Now, say it!
Say, "Jessie's not my friend!"
[breathes deeply]
Jessie's not my friend.
And that Bea means nothing to you.
You know I can't say that--
What's your problem, then?
My problem is that
I lost the only friends I ever had.
My problem is that
I-I don't belong anywhere.
Not here, not there, nowhere.
That's because no matter where I go,
I'm always me.
[inhales sharply]
I'm too broken to belong.
That's why you belong to us.
[inmates screaming]
[Sherlock] Remind you
of the good old days, John?
Out working a case.
How did we get so bloody old?
Speak for yourself.
[chuckles softly]
I feel old anyway.
Like a dull blade…
barely capable of opening a letter.
I never told you what happened
with the Collector case.
-You solved it?
-Mmm.
It was Edith Dubois, the head botanist.
She was…
She was trying to build a husband
out of people's body parts.
Listen, I just wanted to tell you…
[sighs]
you were right.
She lied to me.
It was Snowdonia Hawkweed.
[chuckles]
Sorry I was so easily fooled.
Sorry if I made you feel
like you weren't incredible.
You are incredible.
How were you to know?
Thought you'd be over the moon,
learning you were right.
Yes, well…
there's more to life
than being right, I suppose.
I wish I could go back
and tell my younger self that.
I wish…
I wish I could've been a better man.
Now look at me.
[sighs]
I may not be the hero
of the story anymore, John…
but I can, at least, help.
You cold?
No.
You're cold.
-You can wear my scarf.
-I don't want your scarf.

as your bloody mother. Take it.
Fine.
