1 [KATIE.]
Hospital party! Hands in the air! - Oh, yeah! - Whoo! I cannot believe there's no line for this ride.
Oh.
Roller-coasters always make me need to go to the bathroom.
You missed me so much you had to fake sick to come back? Megan, you're here! Yeah, still got this awesome cancer thing.
So, why are you here? Everything OK? Yeah, I had a fever.
Now I'm just here for observation.
Sucky.
But if I was gonna make this all about me, and I am, I'm super glad you're here.
- I missed you! - Oh, I missed you, too.
Oh.
Oh, hi, Megan.
Hi, Katie.
- Oh, am I in your spot? - Oh, no.
Yeah, I'll um I'll sit in the chair.
Oh, we should check out the teen room.
They redid it.
- Really? What did they do? - Added another boy-band poster.
Well, now I have to check it out.
- [LAUGHTER.]
- [KATIE.]
Whoo! Let's do this! Justin! Hey, the old gang's back together.
Hey, Alexa.
And uh Brenda.
- Uh Katie.
- Took a shot.
This is Alexa? The troublemaker? I heard one time, you stole the hospital helicopter.
Well, it was a second piece of coffee cake, but I like how my legend grows.
What about that time you locked Nurse Lynda in the bathroom? No one can prove that that was me.
But that was me.
So are we gonna do something fun? You guys can.
I'm only here for a couple of days, so I'm ready to kick back, order room service and binge-watch everything.
It's hospital food and basic cable.
It's OK.
I guess I can just look out the window and count cars in the parking lot.
Red cars are 20 points, blue cars are Did I say binge-watching? I meant we are gonna have so much fun.
Yes! Alexa and I will brainstorm all night and come up with some great ideas.
- Thanks, Brenda! - Katie.
You guys should be in your rooms.
Oh, I should have known.
Alexa's here.
Yeah, I was encouraging them to go back to their rooms.
Mm-hm.
Oh.
Hi, Katie.
Visiting hours are over.
B-But she's my emotional-support animal.
Woof-woof? I bet that's just as cute at your house.
OK, I guess I have to go.
Oh, I hate to leave you alone.
Don't worry, she's not alone.
- She's got me.
- Mm.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Look, I know you're doing your job, but it really raises her spirits when I'm around.
[ALEXA AND MEGAN LAUGHING.]
Uh [CHUCKLES.]
See? See, my powers even work through closed doors.
I've got you When I can't take it any longer You make me feel stronger I've got you When I can't take it You make it so much better We'll do this together Oh-oh-oh-oh, we'll do this together I've got you Oh-oh-oh We'll do this together Oh, you're gonna love this part.
She's under the bed.
[LAUGHS.]
And he doesn't know she's under the bed! What are you looking at? Uh Oh, Alexa's Instagram.
Visiting hours don't start until nine.
Oh, I hate when she's in the hospital.
I just don't like leaving her alone.
There's other kids there.
Yeah, but they're not her friends.
They look like friends.
- They're not her best friend.
- She looks like a best friend.
She's not.
No, that's that's Megan.
She's just a hospital friend.
Last year, my friend Spencer got a new best friend.
Oh.
And And what happened? Mom told me friendship's like sunshine there's always enough for everyone.
Aw! That's nice.
Wait.
You and Spencer aren't friends any more.
No.
There wasn't enough sunshine for me.
Oh, you're gonna love this part! He falls out of the tree.
[BODY THUDS.]
He fell out! I knew he was gonna.
Your sunshine is here! Hey, look.
I stole this off a tray.
[CHUCKLES.]
What tray? The one marked "Alexa.
" Thanks.
What fun thing are we doing for Michelle? We're gonna make that music video that Megan and I talked about.
Oh, yeah! That music video that you and Megan and me always talk about.
That's awesome.
- Hey, kiddo.
- Hey, honey.
How are you feeling? - Fine.
- Yeah? [ALEXA.]
Wow, Lucas.
You woke up on a Saturday just to see me? [GROANS.]
Not yet.
He really wants to be here.
I saw it in his eyes just before they shut.
So, honey, I brought your pillow from home, and it's perfectly fine that you didn't want me to sleep over last night.
Or tonight.
Also fine.
Listen, we're gonna be right back.
Just gonna go say hi to the nurses.
Where are the nurses? Uh Honey, you know how you get a little uh protective when Alexa's in the hospital? Honey, it's fine.
The nurses here love me.
I see you, Chad! Lori.
Listen, have you scheduled Alexa's blood test? I would have checked myself, but someone took her chart.
Yeah, doctors do that sometimes.
Everything's good.
She saw the doctor this morning.
Her fever's gone.
They're keeping her for observation.
- So - Right, right.
Well, since I have you here, I recently read in the New England Journal of Medicine that they're doing a study I'm sorry, they need me in surgery.
I've got to go.
Darn it! He never got a chance to hear about that study.
Dave! Lori.
Lynda, can you make sure to monitor Alexa every 15? I know she's not your only patient, but she's my only child.
I'm sitting right here.
Hey, she's working the nurse.
Just go back to sleep.
Alexa may not always show she needs care, but you have to keep an eye on her.
I promise I will not let you down.
- Are those for anyone? - Oh, have one.
Charlene's mom made them for us.
Excuse me, I'm actually on my way to check on Charlene.
Did you see that? Yeah.
Lynda's great.
No, Charlene's getting special treatment because her mom made cookies for the nurses.
How did I not see this before? Because it's not true? We are getting in on this cookie racket.
Let's go.
[DAVE GRUNTS.]
What am I doing? Get up.
Almost ready to shoot this.
- Everybody, take your positions.
- Take your positions, everybody! - Justin, you good there? - Yeah, I've got my dance partner.
Nurse, are you ready to shoot this? I've directed three YouTube videos and six bar mitzvahs, so, yeah, I think I got this.
All right, let's do this.
Let it shine, shine, shine Shine, shine, shine So, hey, we brought our drum And this is how we dance No mistaking, we make our breaks If you don't like our 808s Then leave us alone Because we don't need your policies We have no apologies for being Find me where the wild Oh, sorry, guys.
I've got two minutes left of my break.
We'll finish later.
I've got just enough time to eat a burrito over a trash can.
[MEGAN LAUGHS.]
I've missed Alexa.
- We were up all night talking.
- Oh.
- Uh What did you guys talk about? - Everything.
Her progress, my progress, our moms, how weird it's been at school.
We just talked and talked and talked.
Yeah, sounds like you really talked.
Yeah.
And you know Alexa.
She made me laugh so hard, I sprayed milk out of my nose.
[LAUGHS.]
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alexa's been making me laugh so hard for years.
Yeah, I am I am constantly spraying stuff out of my nose.
[KATIE LAUGHS.]
She calls me an elephant.
[KATIE LAUGHS.]
We're best friends.
Cool.
Yeah, I'm I'm her elephant.
Me.
Not her.
Mom, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I have homework.
Yeah, well, your sister has cancer, so Dad? [SIGHS.]
Honey, we don't have to bribe the nurses.
Alexa isn't getting more attention because she doesn't need it.
It's good.
[SIGHS.]
You're right.
You're right.
I just I need to calm down.
Oh, God! We're out of eggs! - Lunchtime, Jack.
- I can't leave.
I'm taste-tester.
Self-appointed.
This plate's good to go.
Do you have eggs, Jennifer? Oh, yeah, if you're not fussy about expiration dates.
This seems unusual.
[SIGHS.]
Yeah, she's in full-on Alexa-in-the-hospital mode.
You take psychology class.
Can you talk to her? Please? OK.
Yeah, I'll see what I can do.
[LORI.]
OK.
Hey, Dave, in my psychology class, we've been talking about irrational fears.
Oh? Is that something anyone can have? [JENNIFER.]
Yes, it is.
Especially parents about their kids.
You know what I mean, Lori? Yeah, I do.
It's like how Dave has an irrational fear of spiders.
No, I don't.
I was thinking something a little bigger, a little more hospital-y? I don't know, it's something about those creepy things, with their hairy legs and all those eyes.
OK, stop it.
And they have millions of babies! And they're always hiding in dark corners.
[WHISPERS.]
Crawling on you when you're sleeping.
Oh, God! There's one! Did I get it? Yeah.
That's one dead raisin.
I swear I feed him.
The video is so much fun.
But I was wondering When are we gonna make some trouble? Oh, trouble, huh? How about something a little unauthorized after hours? Like a secret scavenger hunt.
You read my mind.
The nurses hate it.
That's why we love it.
I love it, too.
I'm totally in.
Hey, Michelle.
[AS KERMIT.]
Kermit the Frog here to take you to your room.
[LAUGHS.]
Yeah, I've got to rest up.
[AS GOOFY.]
Would you prefer Goofy? Hyuck! She's on her way.
Are you sure this will uh help her with her stress about Alexa? I've taken Introduction to Psychology twice.
I think I know what I'm doing.
All right.
What's this thing I had to see? Jennifer has an idea she thinks will help, and I have to go do something.
- This is weird.
- You love going to Weird Town with me.
I know you do.
- Yeah, I do.
- [LAUGHS.]
Great.
You're gonna work through your anxiety about Alexa by hitting these pillows as hard as you can.
Honestly, I'm fine! Just try it once.
I don't know.
[GRUNTS.]
That felt good.
Good! Now, if you want to keep going, you can just - [YELLS.]
- OK.
OK, looks like you got the hang of it.
Whoa! Can I play? Oh, no, Jack.
This is therapy.
I don't Take that, Spencer! OK, go ahead.
[CHUCKLES.]
[BOTH GRUNTING.]
I hope this thing Jennifer's doing with your mom works.
Me, too, because these oatmeal-raisin cookies she made me bake did not come out.
[DENSE BANGING.]
Center's good.
No, it's not.
[LORI YELLS IN DISTANCE.]
- [GLASS SHATTERS.]
- [BOTH.]
Yeah.
- Whoa! - Yikes! I did therapy.
Dang, Mom! Take her home, Dave.
Take her home now.
Let's go, honey.
[LORI.]
Mm.
- I broke a lamp.
- Yes, you did.
- And two picture frames and a vase.
- I'll write you a check.
[CLATTERING UPSTAIRS.]
[PANTING.]
I finished upstairs.
What's next? and when you find the item, you take a picture with it.
Great, just what the world needs - more selfies.
Oh, good.
We've got fun Justin with us.
Katie's here! I can't believe you actually snuck back in! Oh, we were just about to pick teams.
- Hm.
Who should I choose? - Me! Me! Me! Let's see.
Me! Me! Me.
- I choose Michelle.
- Yes! Yes, we choose Michelle! So, you and me? What can I say, Justin? I guess I'm just drawn to your magnetic personality.
You're not the first.
Don't you hide your face Let it shine, shine, shine Shine, shine, shine [CAMERA CLICKS.]
So, hey, we brought our drum And this is how we dance No mistaking, we make our breaks If you don't like our 808s Then leave us alone Because we don't need your policies We have no apologies for being Find me where the wild things are Oh, my, we'll be all right Don't mind us, yeah Find me where the wild things are Oh, my, we'll be just fine Don't mind us, yeah Find me where the wild things are That was awesome.
[ALEXA.]
Let's go finish the scavenger hunt.
We're so gonna win this thing.
Whenever we team up, nobody else has a chance.
Oh, yeah? Come on, Justin.
Do you want to wrap or be wrapped? This is the one thing I feel strongly about.
I want to wrap.
Do you remember our first scavenger hunt? I was having a bad day, feeling all stir-crazy.
You made me feel so much better.
You know where you're gonna feel even better? On that jet ski at the lake.
Oh, yeah! [KATIE LAUGHS.]
Whose Whose jet ski? W-What lake? Oh, yeah, Megan invited me to spend a weekend at the lake with her family.
Oh, great.
So, are we scavenger hunting or not? Oh, do we have a choice? Laters.
OK, Megan, you can just finish with us.
We always made a good team.
No.
No, she can't.
I-I'm sorry, but she can't.
OK? A-And that's not my rule.
That is the International Scavenger Hunt Rules.
[LAUGHS.]
Look it up.
You pick a team and you stick to it.
Uh-huh.
Or forfeit and return to your room by yourself.
Katie, chill out.
It's just a game.
Well, I-is it? Is it just a game? What is going on in here? You two should be in your rooms.
And, Katie, it's the second night in a row you've stayed past visiting hours.
Sorry, but you can't come back tomorrow.
What? No! No, I-I have to come back tomorrow, OK? Alexa needs me.
Katie, I'll be fine.
Oh.
OK, then.
Then I'll go.
Lynda, I-I'll finish it at home.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
Hey, sweetie.
I brought you a pancake.
I brought you a smile! What's wrong? Oh, nothing.
Nothing.
It's just a Megan thing.
You know, I-I kind of lost it last night with Alexa.
Oh, honey.
You know, the thing about friendships, they're like sunshine Mom.
I just, I really wanted to be there for her.
Especially after what happened with the play on Friday.
I-I need to fix this.
- [SIGHS.]
- Alexa's your best friend.
Just go down there and talk to her.
There's nothing stopping you.
Hey, you're right.
[CHUCKLES.]
Yeah, I mean, who cares if I was "banned" from the hospital? That's the What? [BRAKE RELEASES.]
[BRAKE LOCKS.]
Hey, Katie.
I'm not here! I'm home.
And I'm in the South of France.
[SIGHS.]
[MAN.]
Group meeting in the teen room! Come on, guys.
Get ready to get your share on! Yeah, come on in.
Just want to remind everyone this is a safe space.
Crying is encouraged.
So is laughing.
You guys know me.
I'll probably do both.
Let's make these next two hours count.
[MOUTHS.]
[LORI SNAPS FINGERS.]
Lynda, hi.
Listen um I know I've been a little critical about Alexa's care.
[DAVE COUGHS.]
Very critical.
Um But I just want you to know that I appreciate everything you do for our daughter.
I hope you can forgive me.
[SIGHS.]
Your child has cancer.
You're doing the best you can.
Thanks.
These are not a bribe.
[DAVE COUGHS.]
They were a bribe.
But now they're a thank-you.
Lori, Dave, great news.
Dr.
Breitwieser is going to release Alexa this afternoon.
She just needs to avoid germs, so should do school from home for a few days.
- OK, well, that's great! - Yeah.
Hey, that's good news.
Alexa's one strong girl.
I bet she gets it from her mother.
[DAVE COUGHS.]
And her father.
[LORI.]
Lucas! And I just feel stuck, and I start to panic because I don't know what to do.
Do I destroy the Death Star or retreat back to the Rebel base? I don't Justin, I feel like I shouldn't have to say this.
You blow up the Death Star! Anyone have anything to share that is non-video-game-related? - I'll go.
- Megan.
I've been having this weird dream lately.
It's New Year's Eve and I'm all dressed up at this great party.
And then, at midnight, my beautiful dress just turns into a hospital gown, and all the hair I've grown back just disappears.
It's like a really weird Cinderella story.
I talked to Alexa about it and it helped.
- Thanks.
- Well, you helped me, too.
Like when I told you about how weird it was when everybody found out at my school.
I wonder what it will be like when I go back.
I'LL SAVE YOU THE SUSPENSE: it will be weird.
- Didn't somebody get you a goldfish? - [LAUGHS.]
Yeah.
But it's worth it.
I'm so glad I get to go to school and be with my friends, especially my best friend, Katie.
- Katie? - Yeah, Brenda.
Justin, you'll be fine.
And if people give you weird looks, you can take comfort in knowing it might just be because you are weird.
True.
I miss this.
I forgot what it's like to be around people who understand the dreams, and the hospitals and the looks.
You guys get it like no one else can.
Katie? Uh J-Just Just ignore me.
Yeah.
I'm not here.
You don't see me.
I'm gonna go.
I'll be right back.
Should Alexa be alone with that crazy girl? Katie, wait! I've got so many questions, But I'm gonna start with: are you OK? No.
No, I-I'm crazy and jealous and a bad friend.
I sort of got the feeling that you were jealous of Megan, but I didn't realize it was this intense.
You hid in a closet.
Yeah, I did.
But at least now I understand why you're so close with Megan.
She gets what you're going through in a way that I never will.
And I hate that.
Katie.
Hey.
You get everything else about me that no one ever will.
And I'm glad we don't share this.
It's not a club I ever want you to be a part of.
Yeah.
But I still need my Katie hugs.
[KATIE SNIFFS.]
Gosh, I'm sorry I got so crazy.
"Got"? [ALEXA CHUCKLES.]
[LYNDA.]
Katie Cooper! I don't believe this! OK, I love you.
Got to go! [ALEXA LAUGHS.]
[ALEXA.]
When you find something as special as the friendship Katie and I have, you protect it with everything you've got.
Nothing can break us.
Not a play or another friend.
And definitely not cancer.
[ALESSIA CARA "WILD THINGS".]
Find table spaces Say your social graces Bow your head They're pious here But you and I, we're pioneers We make our own rules Our own room, no bias here Let them sell what they are selling There are no buyers here So gather all the rebels now We'll rebel-rouse and sing aloud We don't care what they say No way, no way And we will leave the empty chairs To those who say we can't sit there We're fine all by ourselves So, hey, we brought our drum And this is how we dance No mistaking, we make our breaks If you don't like our 808s Then leave us alone Because we don't need your policies We have no apologies for being Find me where the wild things are Oh, my, we'll be all right Don't mind us, yeah Find me where the wild things are Oh, my, we'll be just fine Don't mind us, yeah Find me where the wild things are [LAUGHTER.]
Hey! Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh I've got you Oh-oh-oh-oh We'll do this together
