No Return

1
(upbeat music)
(relaxing music)
- [Brett] You're so lucky.
- Uh, it's just a movie.
- It's not just a movie, all right?
It's the final part of the
"Space Mermaid" trilogy.
- So?
- So it won't be released
here for another month.
- Oh, it's boring schoolwork.
I have to do an essay
on it for Media Studies.
(scoffs)
- And why's that?
- Well, it's gonna be pretty hard if I
don't get back to Ireland
before Tara wakes up.
- It's not fair.
It's like you get to
go and see "No Return,"
and I get to help Craig paint tables
at some stupid father-son
bonding exercise.
- Oh, poor Bretty-Wetty.
Life can be so cruel.
- That's the last time I help you with
your shell collection.
- Okay.
I'm deeply grateful.
Now, can we just get a move on, please?
Okay?
- Some people have all the luck.
(upbeat music)
- Maybe we can sneak you onboard the bus.
That way, Miss. Murphy won't see you.
- Yeah, great.
What do I tell Craig?
Excuse me, I'm just going to put you off
for a few hours and catch a movie?
And I promised him.
- Okay.
Well, have fun painting.
- [Brett] Thanks.
- Okay, where is it?
- What?
- The portal key.
It isn't there.
- I haven't touched it, you
came through this morning.
- Well, if you haven't taken
it and I haven't got it, then--
- It's all right, don't panic.
Maybe it was Mum.
- Why would she take it?
- I don't know.
Look, send Cormac an email
and I can get a cover
for you and Miss. Murphy.
(playful music)
Mum!
- I told you never to come into my room!
- I'm not in your room.
- You took it.
- Took what?
- You know what I'm talking about.
- Well, I don't have
time for this, all right?
- My dinosaur bone!
It's worth millions, that bone!
- I haven't got it!
- So, someone took it.
- Wait a minute!
Wait a minute.
Wayne had something taken, and so if you,
I mean, that only leaves--
- [Together] Meredith.
- Was she in my room?
- How would I know?
- Well, where is she now?
- I don't know.
(scoffs)
- If you find her, tell her to expect it
when she least expects it.
(machine revs)
- Ah!
G'day, mate!
Ready to get stuck into it?
- Where's Meredith?
- Yeah, she and Jackie went to the museum.
One of those show-and-tell days, you know?
You bring out your junk
and get it identified.
(laughs)
Anyway, we use the coarse sandpaper
to take the finish off,
and then we use the, uh,
where is it?
Ah.
Here, the fine to make it silky-smooth.
(playful music)
- [Computer] You have mail.
You have mail.
- You are going to owe
me for this, Hannah.
- [Miss. Murphy] Tara,
have you seen Hannah?
- She was gone when I woke up.
- Was she at breakfast?
- I don't know.
- Surely you would have noticed.
- Why would anyone notice Hannah, miss?
- Miss?
Miss, uh, Hannah said
to tell you that, uh,
she found a bird, an injured bird.
She's taking that to the vet.
Uh, she'll catch up
with you at the cinema.
- You spoke to her?
- I, we, we communicated, yeah.
- Seem agitated, Cormac?
Is something wrong?
- Just excited about the movie, miss.
- What kind of bird was it?
- Well, I couldn't actually see the bird.
- If Hannah were to deliberately
avoid school excursion,
I would have no choice but to ground her
and any accomplices for a month.
You understand?
- Yes, Miss. Murphy.
- Go on then.
- Come on, or we'll miss the train!
(upbeat music)
- I think I'll have a browse
through the art gallery.
You okay if I pick you up at closing time?
- Okay.
- Bye.
- See you, Jackie!
- Bye.
(playful music)
- Next.
- My name is Meredith Payne.
I believe I have some
artifacts that might be
of some interest to the museum.
- Let's have a look, then.
- My brother found this
on our trip to Pinnacles.
He says it could actually be
from the Paleolithic period.
He says it's a dinosaur bone.
He says it's a million years old.
- It's the thigh bone of a cow.
Maybe 30 years old?
We get a lot of those.
- [PA] Our staff stores all
information that you had.
- Brett!
Wait up!
- Look, if the museum gets
sus about the portal key,
it's all over, all right, so hurry!
- Are you aware of the
American space station
that broke up over the
coast of Western Australia?
Scattering debris for
hundreds of kilometers
in its spiral descent.
- Skylab, 1979?
- Yes, my father says that's a bit of it.
He knows someone who got
$5,000 for a similar piece.
- I'm not sure.
- How much do you think it's worth?
- Need a second opinion, really.
Ted?
- Hm?
- Oh.
- 1964, XM Ford Falcon.
- It's the hood ornament of a car.
You can get up to $8 for
them at a good wrecks yard.
Anything else?
- Well, there is one other thing.
(dramatic music)
- [Officer] Tickets, please.
Tickets, please.
- This way!
Hannah?
- [Officer] Can I see your ticket please?
- Well, I'm just visiting from Ireland,
I didn't realize--
- It's a $50 fine for traveling
without a valid ticket.
Can I see some ID?
- I don't have any on me.
I left it home.
- Then you'll have to come with me.
- Oh, but I--
- Well, would you like
me to call the police?
(tense music)
- Heavier than lead.
- The decoration is Celtic.
I looked it up on the Net.
- The density is remarkable.
I cannot even find the composition.
Where'd you find this?
- Uh, I just found it
lying around the house?
- [PA] Perhaps if you find it.
- [Officer] Address?
- O'Keeffe's School.
County Galway, Ireland.
- Local address.
- Oh, well I don't have one.
I'm just a tourist here.
- No ticket, no ID, no money, no address.
So I'll have to call your parents.
- No, you can't.
- Ah, you can't tell me you
don't have any of them, either.
(upbeat music)
- Cormac!
She's nowhere to be seen, Cormac.
This is not a good sign.
- Maybe she got lost,
or maybe the bird died.
- Perhaps you should go look for her.
Which vet did she say it was?
- Would you like a
chocolate truffle, miss?
My gran got them for my birthday.
- I couldn't, thank you.
They're your present.
- Please!
Please, they're really delicious.
Uh, especially the ones
in the blue wrappers.
- Ah, maybe just one.
My mother used to buy me these in Dublin,
they were the highlight of
my week in my first year.
Ah, there we are.
- Oh, Hannah, I'll see you inside!
Well she's there, she just got in, miss.
I better hurry, I don't
wanna miss the start.
- It's urgent.
Can we use the lab now?
I'll send Ted down with it.
Ted?
Okay, we're gonna have a mold taken
to send to the anthropology department,
so they can identify the markings.
Then, I'll take it to
the lab for analysis.
- Analysis?
- Just a series of tests
to determine how old it is,
what it's made of, possible origin.
Ah, Ted?
- I'll carry it.
- Do you mind if I, uh, sit here, Rosie?
- It's taken.
- Did you hear what I said?
It's taken!
- You can share my chocolates.
(dramatic music)
- [Dr. Ackerman] How much longer, Ted?
- Be dry in about 10 minutes.
- That's amazing!
You can't tell the difference.
- We'll leave the replica here to dry,
I'll take the real one for testing.
- I just know it's something important.
- All right, let's go
over this one more time.
- I'm staying with my friend's family.
- All right, I'll call their number.
- No, they won't be home.
- In that case, I'll have
to call the juvenile unit
to take you into custody
until your parents
or guardian can be contacted.
- There's a wasp in my shirt!
It's in my shirt!
- Just, you, just.
- Help, help, help!
Help, there's a wasp in my shirt!
I'm allergic to 'em!
Help!
There's a wasp up my shirt!
- Calm down, where is it?
(panting)
- Huh, I think it's gone.
I'm okay.
I'm okay, I'm okay.
Really, I'm all right.
Thanks so much for your help there.
- Just a minute.
Wouldn't it be easier if
you'd just paid a fare?
- I'm sorry?
- Look, I didn't come down
on the lil' Shiela, mate.
That's a nice bit of
acting, but either you pay
Miss. Irish's fare,
or you can take it up with the police.
- Okay.
Fair enough, then.
- And four more, the charity team.
Now shoot through, and no more
Brad Pitt impersonations or
I'll put you through the ringer.
- [Dr. Ackerman] I'll just
drip some acid onto it,
to test the chemical reaction.
- Would you mind turning it over?
I wouldn't want it to be damaged.
- Oh, good point.
(playful music)
- Oh!
- Is it okay?
- A very strange reaction.
- Really?
- I'll have to try another test.
- This place is enormous.
How are we gonna find her here?
- Excuse me, I'm looking for my sister.
All right, it's really important.
Um, she brought some
stuff in to be identified.
- Discovery Center.
- Excellent, thanks very much.
- I'll just drill a tiny hole
with this hollow diamond bit
and take a core sample.
- Please be careful.
It's not mine, you see.
(drill whirs)
- Meredith Payne.
She's my sister.
I've come to pick her up,
she brought a dinosaur bone
and some other stuff.
- We've had 37 dinosaur bones here, mate.
None of them real.
- Yeah, well she also
a had a, um, a thing.
- Thing?
- Yeah, it was about that shape,
and it had some markings
and it was really heavy.
- Oh yeah that, most intriguing.
It's being analyzed now.
- Analyzed?
- Where?
- The lab.
- Which way?
- Down there.
Sorry, it's a restricted area.
You can't enter.
- Look, it's really
important that we find it.
Her, my sister.
- Just take a seat, guys.
She's with Dr. Ackerman.
They'll be back in a few minutes.
- So what are we gonna do now?
They could be destroying it in there.
(drill whirs)
(crackling)
(explosion booms)
- Incredible.
Something that hard isn't found on Earth.
- You mean it's from outer space?
An alien artifact?
- I wouldn't go that far.
- Well, how'd you explain
the carvings on it, then?
- Well, there must be some
reasonable explanation.
- What other tests can we do?
- There's the WASP.
- Great.
What's that?
- The Wave Analyzing
Spectromatic Positronomitor.
It's an experimental
device we're working on,
though I'm not sure we should risk it.
- Why not?
- It might damage the sample.
- This could be a scientific breakthrough.
Let's do it!
- Okay, come on.
(playful music)
(laughs) There it is!
- Oh, thank goodness.
- This isn't it.
- What are you talking?
Oh, it's a fake.
- A cast, great.
So where is the real one?
- She's got it with her.
Maybe there's another lab, come on!
(ominous music)
- Okay, can you hear me?
Okay, you ready?
- Do it!
(phone rings)
- Dr. Ackerman speaking.
Yes, Ted?
She's here.
Right, I'll tell her.
Your stepmother's in the lobby.
I'll take you down there.
- But the experiment!
- We won't get the results straightaway,
you can leave the artifact here.
It'll be quite safe.
- Oh, okay.
But promise to tell me
the results before anyone else.
- Cross my heart and hope to die.
- This isn't right.
Back in the public area again.
- We've got to find this Dr. Ackerman guy.
- [Announcer] The museum will be closing
in five minutes.
- Well, we can't stop now.
- Come on!
- Your family will be very proud of you.
You might even be famous.
- Really?
- Could be.
- Cool, thanks.
See you tomorrow!
Jackie, you'll never guess what happened!
- Oh my goodness, what happened?
Thanks.
- Locked.
- Locked.
- Great.
Never gonna find Meredith,
or the key, or this Dr. Ackerman.
- Yes, we will.
- No, we won't!
How will I get home?
I don't even have money
for a plane ticket.
- Even if you did have a passport,
that's gonna be fun
explaining how you got here
in the first place.
- Great.
Stuck here forever, then.
- But now, this is a pretty good copy.
Maybe it'll open the portal anyway.
- Oh, stop trying to humor me.
- Well, let's keep looking then.
(playful music)
- Good night, Dr. Ackerman.
- Good night, Bill.
- That's Dr. Ackerman.
- Then where's Meredith?
- [Brett] What is she doing?
- I don't know, and I
don't like the look of it.
- Anyway, we've gotta stop her.
- I've got an idea.
(suspenseful music)
(playful music)
Brett!
- Hello, Ted?
Yeah, it went off here, too.
I'm stuck in the lab, can't see a thing.
Yeah, Ted, can you check it out?
Hello?
Is someone there?
- Hey!
What are you doing in here?
The museum's closed.
- Oh, sorry.
I got lost and then the lights went out.
I'm okay now.
Thanks.
(ominous music)
(explosion booms)
Sorry, we got lost.
- It happens.
- Oi, you two!
- Your sister forgot her cow bones.
- Oh, okay.
Thanks, but she only brought one.
- Ah, give her the lot.
As a souvenir.
- All right, cheers!
- You can't just go into peoples' rooms
and take their things, Meredith.
- Well, thanks for giving
us so much of your time.
- Especially valuable things.
Wayne is very upset.
- I'm very upset.
- You should've asked.
- Well, if I'd have asked,
he wouldn't have let me.
- You're right, I wouldn't.
- That was Dr. Ackerman, from the museum.
That object you took in
wasn't a meteor, after all.
Apparently it just
disintegrated in the machine.
- Ah, I hope they don't
sue us for the damages.
- Hi guys, I'm just gonna
show Hannah something.
- I think you've got something
to go and say to Brett,
haven't you, Meredith?
(playful music)
(sighing)
- Portal functioning as per normal.
- Thanks.
- It's not a problem.
And I'm sorry you missed your movie.
Maybe we can see it together
when it comes out here.
- I have to survive Miss. Murphy first.
- Good luck.
- Okay.
- See ya.
(upbeat music)
- I just thought it would be so cool
to be famous for making a
scientific breakthrough.
- Well, there aren't
any other spares around,
Meredith, so don't take my
stuff in the future, eh?
- I won't.
Where's Hannah?
She came down here with you.
I saw her.
- Oh, she just left.
Why, didn't she pass you on the stairs?
- No.
- Never mind.
She'll be back.
- You owe me big time.
- Did I invite you into my room?
- I spent three hours
sanding those tables,
that was your job!
- So what?
I'll do the painting.
Oh by the way, that bone of yours.
Museum had a heap of 'em.
Ted says that if you hold onto 'em
for another 30 years, they'll
be worth 10 times as much.
- Wow, thanks.
- Sure.
10 times nothing.
(dramatic music)
- Hannah!
You actually are here.
I was beginning to
think you were a figment
of Cormac's imagination.
- Well, as you can see, Miss. Murphy,
I'm alive and in the flesh.
- And did you enjoy the drama?
- Well, absolutely.
Now I know exactly how
it feels to be stranded
in an alien world,
with no way of getting back.
- You owe me a whole bag
of chocolate truffles.
(playful music)
(soft music)
