King (2011) s01e08 Episode Script

Scout Winter

Previously on King Jim Lowell and Danny Slass are suspended.
- What are you gonna do? - Go home fight with my husband.
Nolan's looking into our fink fund.
She thinks we're skimming.
You got money issues, you got communication issues, you got life issues! I called 911.
Scout, no, run! Get out of here! Daddy! Hmm, you didn't eat much.
You, uh You ok? I think I have the flu or the plague.
I just I should probably have an early night.
- So where are we at? - I don't know.
Do you want me to come home? Do you want to come home? I don't know.
Maybe, maybe we need a bit more Time.
Yeah, yeah, yeah We need a little more time.
Sure.
We didn't talk about your thing.
Yeah, um, right.
Right, yeah, um.
I didn't take that money, Jess, ok? I need you to know that.
We, I mean, we all took little bits here and there but we always put it back, ok? It's just how I really feel sick.
Um I think I need to talk to a lawyer.
A lawyer? About your case, Danny.
We need some advice other than union counsel.
Just make sure we've looked at all your options.
Actually, you know what? Can you sit down for one second please, so I can talk to you? Uh, I've been a little strapped lately.
- For cash.
- How much? I've been asking the guys at work.
They've been helping out here and there, but that well's kinda run dry.
So, uh, I took an application for a line of credit against the house.
- What?! - Half the house is mine, Jess, alright.
I'd appreciate it if you'd just sign it, ok? I'll give you some cash for day to day.
I'm not signing that.
Can't we just take a sanity day? No, we can't take a sanity day because when the school calls and they ask where you are, I can't say you took a sanity day.
- Why not? - They'll think we're crazy, ok? Then tell them I'm taking care of you.
I can help clean up.
- Can you please help me out? - Yeah, I got it.
- Dad - No, you know what, honey? If we don't go on with our lives the bad guys win, alright? I'm not going to let that happen, ok? Thanks, honey.
Ok.
Got it.
- Mr.
Trevor Winter? - Oh! Hey, did you get the guy? Come on in, I've just got to get the kids We have a court order from child protection services.
What are you talking about? Hey, hey, don't touch my kids! Sir, due to recent events, we're taking your children to child services.
You can't touch my kids! - Sir! - You can't take my kids! What's going on? Daddy! Scout! Connor! - Dad! - Calm down.
Scout! Connor! Hey! Hmm, nothing like a man in uniform.
All the guys at my firm are either fat and bald or hot and gay.
Thanks for coming on such short notice.
So this is your office? Did you arrange it this way? Bad Feng Shui.
Can we just talk about Danny? Someone could shoot you through that window - Lisa? - Your husband's best defense? - Yes, please.
- Stupidity.
These are stupid cops doing stupid things and their best defense is their own stupidity.
Danny's facing a discreditable conduct charge, so he needs to get counseling through the employee assistance program for his gambling asap.
When they do an investigation for the misappropriation of funds, and they will, it'll mitigate any disciplinary action.
- My professional opinion.
- He's never gonna agree.
- That will make him look guilty.
- He is guilty.
Not guilty guilty.
He skimmed a few hundred off the top, - but he put it back.
- It's his word against his partner's.
Lowell's in for murder.
Danny looks pretty good next to him.
Better to admit to being a sad loser gambler and ask for help.
Besides, are you sure your lovely blonde adonis is telling you the whole truth? - Detective King, a minute.
Yes.
Hi.
Sure.
Chief Graci, this is Lisa McGregor.
I'm Jess' sister.
She wouldn't say that.
We could stand here all day, and she wouldn't tell you that.
Pleasure to meet you.
I can have you charged for assault, handshake like that.
Tough crowd.
Sorry.
I can't fake a laugh.
It always sounds like I'm in a grade school musical.
You can't fool anyone, so why bother.
But it is nice to meet you, too.
The no filter thing runs in the family.
- Maybe a little.
- Excuse me.
- Of course.
- Trevor Winter, an anti-racist activist who's caught the attention of some skinheads, he's been attacked 3 times.
No arrests.
Child protection stepped in this morning, - removed the children.
- He gets attacked - and loses the kids? - The press just picked it up.
They say that Winter lost his family because we couldn't make an arrest.
Bad optics.
Optics.
You know, chief, before I met you I like, I never heard that word.
Make the arrest! Get the family back together.
Winter's in holding downstairs.
What's he doing down there? Obstruction! Trevor Winter went to the child protection worker.
Setting a fine example for the kids.
Someone goes after my family, I'd have something to say about it too.
Ok, Collier, what are we looking at? Well, we don't actually have 3 incidents, we've got 6.
In pairs.
Sort of a tit for tat kind of thing.
Tit for tat, I love that about the criminal code.
Winter kicked things off by papering his neighbourhood with anti-racist flyers that attacked the northern front.
They're a Neo-Nazi skinhead group that operates - in his neighbourhood.
- They're new? They have their roots in the west.
Been expanding out here for the last few years.
So, they appear to have responded to the flyers by spray-painting death threats on Winter's house.
Winter retaliates by publishing pictures online of key members of the northern front with names and addresses.
Northern front responded by torching Winter's car.
- So far, no witnesses, no arrests.
Two days ago, Winter drops a bomb.
Publishes this picture of Uber-industrialist Marcus Holmes shaking hands with skinhead number 1.
- Is that the frozen yogurt guy? - No he's the racehorse and mining guy.
Looks like the yogurt guy.
That guy's a white supremacist? He might just be a friendly industrialist.
So anyway, last night, skinhead in a mask breaks into Winter's house, trashes the place, breaking his arm with a baseball bat while his kids were upstairs.
Scout Winter, thirteen, calls 911.
Basically, it's jerks versus jerk.
Except that one jerk just lost his family.
At what point did the law change, making victims of violent crimes into unfit parents, huh?! Trevor, can I get you a glass of water? I was beaten with a baseball bat last night, ok? How the hell can you justify And, and you arrest me?! Ok, let's call this a cooling down period.
You say you know who did this? I put their pictures online.
- What more do you people need? - Anyone ever told you, you get more with sugar than vinegar? I did nothing wrong! You assaulted a child protection worker.
Where are they? Scout and Connor, I want to see 'em.
They're being looked af The kids are being looked after.
They're safe, ok? Trevor, can you tell me why you would continue to antagonize these skinheads after they've not only damaged your property but made death threats? They're terrorists! Right? Disciplined units in a cell-like organization - I'll be right back.
- typical, they're fascists! Winter's under a table for most of the attack.
All he saw were the boots: Candy apple brights.
- You ok? - There's a surplus store downtown that caters to skinheads.
Get MK and Collier to follow up on the boots.
And release Winter.
You think that's a good idea? He's been through enough, he doesn't need the night in jail.
- You ok? - Uh, when's the daughter coming in? Scout? CPS is shuttling her over here now.
Well, you're the teen whisperer, - take the interview.
- Sure.
When can I see my dad? He's a vegan.
You need to make sure he eats.
He forgets sometimes.
How about you, you hungry? Chocolate chip and marshmallow.
My dad says they make marshmallows of horse hooves.
It's good to know.
So, Scout, why don't you tell me what happened.
I came downstairs because I heard yelling, I saw a guy with a baseball bat.
- Do you remember what the guy looked like? - He was wearing a mask, a puffy jacket, suspenders hanging down, Red ones.
Can I ask you about your mom? She was a photographer.
She's dead.
I'm sorry.
Has your dad been different since she died? He's a good dad.
I'm sure he is.
He works on his blog A lot! After mom died, we got insurance money, so that helped with the bills.
Is there anything else you remember from last night? You won't tell my dad if I eat this, will you? Thank you.
Check this out.
We're looking for some information.
Came to the wrong place.
This is a clothing store.
Well, as it happens we're looking for information about clothes.
You're looking for a makeover? You've already got the hair.
Just add the little mustache, you're good to go.
We're looking for information on anyone who may have bought large-sized, red, high-top boots in the last, say, 3 months.
Sorry.
Don't keep that kind of information.
- We can subpoena your credit card records.
- Ok.
Do you recall anyone having bought those boots recently? Not really.
Expensive.
I don't expect they're flying off the shelves.
You'd be surprised.
Business' good, getting better every day.
We're gonna need to see your security footage.
Don't see any cameras, do you? You know, a member of your tribe took a baseball bat to an activist.
Hear anything about that? No.
Did he hit a home run? - We done here? I've got paying customers.
- Please.
I thought I gave you my decorator's number.
I guess it could be worse.
At least there's no foosball table.
Threw it out when it broke.
I want a smoke and a glass of wine.
What does it mean? Take another test.
Best 2 out of 3? Don't know where you're going to put all the baby stuff.
You don't have room for a nursery.
Caitlin slept with us till she was a year.
I hate this city, you know.
Subways are scary, traffic's worse.
The air quality alone makes me want to dry clean my lungs.
Who in their right mind would want to raise a family here? Maybe it's time you think of Ottawa.
You're pregnant, Jessica King.
Best 3 out of 5? Lisa.
I'm the sister lawyer Jess never talks about.
Sister lawyer? Jess never talks about.
What's in the bag? - Pho ga.
Jess wasn't feeling well - Spears.
He brought you pho ga.
That's so sweet.
Thanks.
How'd it go with Scout? She's smart, but she didn't see much.
CPS has placed her and her brother with grandparents.
How are you feeling? I'm not feeling very hungry.
Lis, you want this? Pho Sho.
I'm starving.
Judge granted us a warrant to search the northern front clubhouse.
I'm going there now.
Meet you at the car.
Said she'd meet you at the car.
You're sleeping with that guy, that Spears? Once.
It was a mistake.
You see my other boot? Ok, that's another conversation.
That's a whole other conversation.
Gotcha! Oh my God! It's not his, is it? You got a calendar handy? I don't know.
I guess I just assumed you were raised by wolves.
I have a family, ok? I have a father, I had a mother, and I have Lisa the over-achieving younger sister.
Can we just get back to work, please? You think they know we're coming? You got it wrong.
Winter's the problem.
He's the one committing hate crimes.
That's an interesting perspective, Mr.
Carlson.
We believe people should value the cultures they come from.
It's not about hate, it's about pride.
Pride in our country.
Pride in our heritage.
We educate ourselves so we can take positive actions to preserve the country we love.
Yeah! I'm feeling the love alright.
- We're the target of violence.
- You're the target of flyers! Trevor Winter had his arm broken by a baseball bat.
Is that what you mean by taking positive actions? Just remember, detective: "Colour of a man's skin is his uniform.
" So then the boots, they're just for show? King? Open it! Come on, man, it's not even budded.
You did a heck of a job shining those boots.
I take pride in my appearance.
You shined those boots exactly the way we learned in police college.
It's amazing! Where'd you learn to shine boots like that, Mr.
Carlson? I belong to a paramilitary organization.
We Polish our boots.
No one serves 17 days for 11 arrests.
Not even a patriot.
I think you're a fed.
And I'm going to charge you with attempt cultivation.
And if I'm right, your superiors will show up, ask us to play nice and throw the game.
Then I'll know for sure.
You're in way over your head, you know that? What do you know about the attacks on Trevor Winter? - This is a major project.
- A man's family is at stake, corporal.
I'm UC.
Federal hate Crimes Unit, transferred here from Alberta.
When Winter started his campaign against the northern front, I saw an opportunity to get some cred with the local skins.
I applied for a 420-I.
An undercover officer is allowed to break the law.
I made the DEA threats.
What about the burned-out car? A guy in my house did it.
I swear I didn't find out about it till after I kicked his ass, told my guys to back off Winter after that.
Last night's beating? We didn't do it.
I got no idea who did.
- You didn't do it? - No.
Why? That 'cause would be too much? I mean, death threats, setting vehicles on fire, that's your limit? Don't be a bitch, detective.
I'm doing a job just like you are.
You believe him? If Carlson did the beat down, he's not protected by the 420-I.
Could end up serving serious time, lose his pension.
Good reason to lie.
I don't know what I think.
If you lay charges, you could screw up a national hate crime project.
Let it die, Winter will call out police services publicly for not protecting him, taking away his kids.
Ok.
Limit the investigation to last night's attack for now.
I'll make a few calls and find out about Robbie Carlson.
Forget about the death threats.
Forget about the torched car.
Forget about the northern front.
Who else could have done last night's beating? - Were're backing off our prime suspects? - Winter's been waving a red flag at every white pride nut bar in the city.
Could be one of them.
Maybe he's pissed off some other skinheads we don't know about.
- What about Marcus Holmes? - Sure looks friendly.
- The frozen yogurt magnate? - Racehorses and mining.
The beat down took place the day after that picture - was posted online.
- Ok, let's look at him.
We'll talk to Winter first.
See what he has to say about Mr.
Holmes.
None of the members of the northern front have jobs.
But every one of them has bankcards, untraceable bank cards connected to a sophisticated system of accounts that allows them to draw salaries from their patrons.
And Marcus Holmes is a patron? - Patron Saint of racists! - You have any evidence? Yeah, yeah, I followed the skinhead leader, and he ran into Holmes.
They shook hands.
You saw the picture, right? That's your smoking gun? Takes nerve! A guy like Holmes could end up suing you into the ground.
Yeah, or having me beaten with a baseball bat.
What are you doing here?! - I don't want a scene.
I just want to pick some things up for the kids.
You're kidding? What? My kids are with, with him? Adam Warchevski.
I am Connor and Scout's grandfather.
I was contacted by child protection! - My wife hated this man, ok.
- That's not true.
- You don't get to come in here! - Hands off! Hey! Hey, Trevor, hey! - Back off! - He you're the police, right? He's trespassing! Get him out of here! - What do you want me to do?! - Sir, relax.
Turn my back on those kids? Spears, take Trevor upstairs, get whatever Mr.
Warchevski needs.
- I want him out! - Scout's mp3 player and her diary.
Connor wants his blue and red shirt.
After my daughter Lizzie died, he cut off all contact.
He refused to let me see my grandchildren, detective - King.
- I've been seeing Scout for about a year.
She cuts dance class once a month and I take her to lunch.
And Trevor doesn't know? Trevor's pretty volatile.
If he spent a little more time thinking about the welfare of his children and a little less about his crusades maybe none of this would have happened.
Ok, that's good, play ignorant.
Lowell's bookkeeping is bad enough, they won't be able to prove mens rea.
But, I need you to tell me about the gambling.
I got a weekly game, so what? What about online? How many hours do you play a week? I play a few.
So do half the cops in this city.
- Running low, skim a little? - Enjoying this? Having fun? Do you still love my sister? Of course I do.
Then why didn't you bring her soup? - Detective Spears brought her soup.
- Did he really? Hm-hmm! Jess is going to need someone, especially now.
Never thought I was good enough for her.
You're the one I did like.
She was all over the place, you showed up, she settled down ish.
Now, this mess.
I must say, your timing is impeccable.
- You do realize I didn't plan this, right? - Danny, look, I want to help you, ok? But I need you to go on record about your gambling problem.
You agree to go to counseling with the employee assistance program, they can't make it a part of their formal investigation.
There's no gambling problem! There is! There really really is! Especially now? What did you mean by that? I mean you need to talk to Jess.
Why? She's pregnant.
Yup Grow up, Danny.
Pay attention.
Take responsibility.
Please Bring her some soup! Your husband's agreed to enter the EAP.
I've set up a meeting with the chief and is that coffee? - Sorry.
I forgot.
- No.
It's called denial.
Prenatal vitamins, folic acid and a copy of what to expect when you're expecting Lis.
I'm at work.
You got what you wanted, Jess.
All right? So.
No more caffeine, no alcohol, no sushi, no more screwing other men.
This is it.
About the size of a sesame seed.
In your belly.
Now.
Hate to interrupt the sisterhood, but I need you for a minute.
Marcus Holmes.
I'd like to talk to you about Trevor Winter.
You know where I can find him? Why? You have something you need to talk to him about? I just spent the morning peeling my board off the ceiling because of that picture.
My kids' teachers have been calling.
So, yeah, I might have a few choice words for him.
What's your relationship to the skinhead in the photo? Guy sticks his hand out, I shake it.
I don't know him from Adam.
- And the northern front? - Never heard of them.
Trevor Winter was attacked in his home last night.
Yeah.
Saw that on the news.
Detective, if he wasn't already so poor, I'd sue him into the ground, and as for his kids, probably better off.
Have you had any contact with Mr.
Winter since the photo was taken? What you mean is did I dress up and break into his house with a baseball bat.
No, detective.
I have a stock price to protect.
- Stay away from Marcus Holmes.
- But you - I know.
- What? Why? I just got read the riot act.
Your case is bumping into Carlson's, could blow his cover.
That happens, I can expect a bill from federal hate crimes for a 6-year investigation.
They think Holmes is financing the northern front? I don't know.
They didn't say.
Did they make hand signals? - Don't start.
- Even if he's connected to the attack on Winter, this guy gets a free pass? - Run every other angle and every other suspect.
Back away from Marcus Holmes, King.
Or we'll both end up back in the phone room.
Maybe he did it to himself.
Trevor Winter broke his own arm? Frustrated by the police's inability to make an arrest or stop the Northern front, Trevor did what any self- respecting borderline mentally ill narcissist would do.
He got a friend to dress up as a skinhead and break his arm.
- In front of his daughter? - Who wasn't hurt.
- And they only trashed one room.
- I don't know.
It would hurt a lot to get your arm broken like that.
Did you see the movie where the guy sawed off his own arm? I mean people do these kinds of things when they're desperate.
Worth a shot, boss? Ok.
Go deeper on Winter.
We know who his enemies are.
Who are his friends? Who would do something like this to help him out? Spears, let's go re-interview Scout.
She forgot to mention the detail of seeing her grandfather on the sly.
Maybe she forgot to mention something else.
I just wanted to touch base, Scout.
This is Jess King.
We work together.
I just wanted to go over what happened the night your dad got attacked.
Again? This time I thought you could do it with your eyes closed.
Why? Cause sometimes we remember things differently that way.
- Just start with what you remember first.
- Sure.
I heard my dad yelling.
Things smashing.
I told Connor to lock himself in the bathroom.
I called 911.
They told me to stay in the bathroom with my brother but I was worried about my dad.
I went downstairs.
He was big With red boots.
Can you see his eyes at all? What colour they were? He had a mask on.
He had this hair sticking out.
Blonde hair.
But I can't remember his eyes.
- I'm sorry.
- No.
Scout, you did great.
Really, really great.
Thought we had an understanding.
We think someone's been playing dress-up.
Head over to wonderland surplus, find out if anyone's bought the uniform lately.
Boots, jacket, whole nine yards.
Specifically anyone blonde.
I'm not doing your work for you.
That special permit you have, that lets you break the law, not someone's arm.
You didn't do this, you better help me find out who did.
Or I'll come after you.
I don't care what anyone says.
Better watch your stripes, sergeant.
- Jess.
- Danny.
Aw, crap.
I forgot your money.
Sorry.
Here, got a hundred bucks cash right here.
Can I talk to you for a second? Yeah.
You're pregnant? Are you? Wanna give us a second here, pal? Give us a second.
Danny! Stop it! Hey! Danny.
Stop! Come here.
I shouldn't have given you that money in front of Spears.
That was sorry.
How you feeling? Last night, I had a dream I had a crab in my stomach.
With tiny heads.
So you gonna tell me about Spears? - Danny.
- What? It's yours.
Ours.
Ok? You gonna follow Lisa's advice? - Come clean, get some help? - Jess.
- We can't afford an investigation.
- Listen to me.
Or risk you losing your job.
Not now.
I'm gonna do whatever it takes.
Ok? - How's the lip? - It's fine.
I'll step up.
If it's mine, - I'll be there.
- Ok.
Not doing this.
I've been up all night thinking about it.
Between calls to the soon to be second ex-wife and the freaked out kids from the failed marriages? Over half the people in this building are on their second marriages.
Jess.
Just breathe.
I know who you are.
.
Yeah, I'm your boss.
You married this straight arrow hunk of a guy, right? You moved out of the city to that little house.
Danny didn't turn out to be who you thought he'd be? Look, I may be all over the map, but with me, at least with me, you know what you're getting.
You think you need to change to be happy, Jess? You don't.
Are you going to say "I love you just the way you are"? - Jess.
- No man who quotes Billy Joel - could be the father of my baby.
- So that means? You need to stop.
Now.
Not yours.
Never will be.
What is it? Carlson called.
He's got something for us.
The store does have a security camera.
A civilian bought candy apple brights last month.
Thank you.
I've been on this for 6 years, detective.
I lost my wife over it.
Moved out here with the project to get a fresh start.
I am not trying to be an a-hole about this.
But this is all I got.
Blow my cover and I got nothing.
I'll have been doing all this for nothing.
And that Would just suck.
So leave me the hell alone.
Mr.
Warchevski.
Thank you for coming.
- Happy to.
- Where's Scout? I left her with her brother.
Detective King, the kids, they're traumatized by this.
I need to keep them away from this for a while.
I can appreciate that, Mr.
Warchevski, but material witnesses, even a 13-year-old with loving grandparents, doesn't get to decide when and how they get questioned.
- Have you seen this man? - No.
I'll have to show it to Scout.
And Connor.
They're both having nightmares.
Connor isn't eating.
Excuse me.
Jessica King.
- We caught a break.
A uniform identified the man in the photo.
Frank Howell.
He's done a lot of time.
Assaults.
Robbery.
Pick him up.
Frank Howell.
What were you doing at wonderland surplus the other day? Shopping.
You bought these.
Why? I like the colour red.
So you've been out of jail, what, 7 months now? - If you say so.
- What're you doing for work? - Landscaping.
- Doing well? - Ok.
- Better than ok.
We found $18,000 cash in your apartment.
That's a lot of landscaping.
Nice arms, Frank.
I always liked men's forearms.
Other women, their eyes go all over the place.
Well, I like those too.
But forearms oof! That's it for me.
Mind if I have a look at them? Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Nice.
Strong.
Clean.
No tats You can roll your sleeves down Frank.
What's a wannabe skinhead like you doing with a full head of hair and no tattoos? What are you talking a about? Frank, you're a suspect for a home invasion and assault - that occurred - I did it.
- Did what? - Bust up that guy's house.
- Winter.
- Ok.
Why? Seen his blog, read about him in the paper.
Felt like he needed to be taken down a notch.
So, you just thought, what the hell, get me some boots, get me a baseball bat, go to town? Who paid you? I'm not buying you did this alone, Frank.
Where'd the 18 grand come from? You sure 18 grand is worth going back to jail for? Danny would like to present you with a statement.
It's our hope you will recommend the hearing be postponed so - Skip the legal foreplay, Lisa.
- Absolutely.
Skipping.
I'd also like to emphasize Danny's willingness not only to seek help, but to also Just read the damn thing.
Go ahead.
Danny's going to be a father.
Did he tell you that? - Congratulations.
- Thank you.
I didn't do anything wrong.
Excuse me.
Danny.
- Hey.
- I don't buy this guy did it alone.
Someone paid Frank Howell to beat up Trevor Winter.
Get mk and Collier to get a warrant on Marcus Holmes' bank accounts.
I thought we weren't supposed to go near that guy.
Let me worry about that.
Find out if there's been any significant withdrawals lately.
Say, 18 grand.
Maybe we'll find the smoking gun.
Hey.
Danny.
- Spears.
Bounce.
Go.
- Jess, we need Go go go.
Don't stop.
I don't want to talk to you.
Danny bailed on the EAP.
He withdrew, he walked out.
- Why? - Jess, you need a lawyer lawyer not a sister lawyer.
I do labor, not criminal.
He's gonna need criminal.
- I tried.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, thanks.
- Jess.
- I gotta get back to work.
Frank Howell.
We got a confession.
- On the most recent attack.
- Why'd he do it? - It's hard to say.
Sometimes criminals will pick the most vulnerable target, try to throw suspicion What about the other ones? The threats, the Those files remain open.
But My gut tells me you won't have any more problems.
Do I get my kids back? I'll recommend they re-instate custody, but commit to counseling for anger management.
Ok? Shut down your blog.
Think about moving.
Think about what a fresh start's gonna mean to your family.
You want me to change my life.
Sometimes a person has to do that for their kids.
Hey? Make changes they wouldn't otherwise make.
Detective King, come on in.
- Where's my dad? - He's at your house getting things ready for when you guys go home.
Yay! We're going home! We're going home! I thought you came to talk about the case.
Mr.
Warchevski, we have charged the man we believe assaulted - your son-in-law.
- Connor, Scout! Can you be quiet just for a damn second please! Go to your rooms.
Go.
The kids have rooms? Yeah.
I threw something together.
Paint on the walls.
Ikea.
To make it easier for them.
You got the call from child protection yesterday.
When did you have time to paint? I was doing some work anyway.
Mr.
Warchevski, would you have any objections to releasing your bank statements? Since my retirement, I'm terrible about bookkeeping.
It might take me some time to find them.
