Death

1
[Toni grunting and groaning]
[Toni] Fuck off. I'll kill all of you!
Don't fucking touch me, you stupid cunt!
Dragan is dead, you idiots!
How stupid are you?
It's obvious! You brain-dead bitch!
- [Carla] Shut up!
- [Toni] Piece of
- [tape peels]
- [Joschka] When you feel panic take over,
focus in on one individual point.
This is your anchor.
- [Carla] It won't stay.
- [Walter] Think of something.
- Boris made himself clear.
- [Joschka] You may feel resistance
- when your desires contradict your values.
- [Walter] Wish we had a big needle.
A knitting needle through one cheek,
out the other.
[Joschka] When you start feeling afraid,
focus on the present.
Just take a deep breath in,
and then let it out.
[exhaling deeply]
[Walter] Get ready, guys. We're close.
MURDER MINDFULLY
[mysterious music playing]
[Björn] It was going to be a busy day.
I felt the pressure as soon as I woke up.
I could be grateful
that two of my issues were resolved.
Emily was still set for kindergarten,
and Toni was still ready
to be delivered to Boris.
At the same time,
I needed to cool off Nicole,
who'd grown way too enthusiastic
about this case.
But my real make-or-break moment
was still to come.
I somehow had to appease
the terrifyingly alive Boris,
who wished to see
the decidedly dead Dragan.
A conundrum, if you will.
POLICE
My plan wasn't entirely risk-free,
and there was a chance it'd fail.
But it was my only hope
of solving this insane mess.
It could work.
Or I could be dead in a ditch
by the end of the day.
[mysterious music swelling]
[music stops]
I was too jittery to sit around
doing mindfulness breathing all day,
so I decided to distract myself
with more single-tasking.
First, I wanted to move
into my new office space,
which was in the same building
as Emily's day care center.
[contemplative music playing]
The fact that this belonged to my client,
who was also dead,
was a positive secondary benefit.
Just like the fact
that the day care center should help me
with my problem with Nicole.
[exhales deeply]
[chuckles faintly]
AGREEMEN
I got my furniture arranged, and drew
up a contract between me and Dragan,
one with excellent conditions.
I then informed the bar association
about my new address.
I took out some liability insurance,
opened bank and business accounts,
- and thereby became self-employed.
- [exhaling]
My first act as a newly-minted
independent contractor
was to hit up the store
for some retail therapy.
I needed one last tool
to keep Boris from killing me.

[alert on cell phone]
Hey, Nicole! Does 3 p.m. work for you?
At my new office, second floor,
above the day care center.
Mm-hm.
[contemplative music playing]
Slowly.
Keep going. Keep going.
[door opens]
Here.
[contemplative music continues]
Um, have you seen Möller around today?
[contemplative music fades]
He's just disappeared.
[quiet dramatic music playing]
- Agnieszka's parents' live there.
- Yeah, I'm aware. Why are we here?
Not we. You.
You're gonna cross the street,
ring your future father-in-law's doorbell,
and tell him you're done shacking up, hm?
How come?
- Let's see. Because you're in love.
- [dramatic music stops]
And also, most married men,
statistically speaking,
are much less likely to commit crimes.
But mostly,
because I told you to, hm?
Wait right here.
[vehicle approaching]
For Agnieszka's papa,
and for her mama.
[contemplative music playing]
- Wait up. That truck's zooming towards us.
- Hm?
Oh, it's still pretty far away.
Not for long.
[Möller gasps]
[contemplative music continues]
[contemplative music fades]
[distant children shouting]
[whirring sound]
[Joschka] We can experience pain
in two ways.
- There's the initial, acute pain
- [meditative music playing]
and the pain we feel
each time we prod our wounds.
We can't make it
so the wound never happened.
But if we can stop reopening our wounds,
and just let them heal,
we'll find that we can move on
far more quickly.
[whirring sound]
[Björn] I needed to stop Nicole
from picking at the wound.
- It was time to break out the bandages.
- [music stops]
Thank you for meeting with me.
Yeah. [chuckles faintly] Gladly. Any time.
Listen, Nicole, I, um
Well, I've been meaning
to talk with you in private.
Because I believe you've sent yourself
down the wrong track.
Oh, yeah?
[dramatic music playing]
- What is this here?
- It's a belt buckle.
Our divers found it
in the lake at Dragan's place.
Looks new.
And it matches the one Dragan
was wearing in the parking lot video.
- Isn't that wild?
- Hm.
Must be the same brand.
Come on now.
[sighs] Nicole, these are mass-produced.
So, you don't think it's odd
we found it in the same town
where we located
a severed ring finger, too?
And where Dragan's lake house is.
And where you just took
a trip with your kid.
That's why I wanted to talk
with you today, Nicole.
I'm not coming to you as Dragan's lawyer.
I'm here as an old friend
who cares about your well-being.
- What's your angle here, man?
- You see?
That's what I'm saying.
You're suspicious to a fault.
You're convinced that everybody's
hiding something,
and I wonder if that could
be because of me, somehow.
Or because of us.
We have a past, after all.
[dramatic music continues]
Björn, don't be crazy.
You can't really mean that.
Hm.
Wish I didn't.
I'd be hard-pressed to think
of a better reason that someone
would go interrogate my daughter.
You crossed a line, friend,
but the only reason I'm keeping my cool,
and I barely am,
is that I'm worried about you, okay?
Do you really think
that I killed a man I've known for years,
let alone while my daughter was there?
You know me.
- I never said that you did that. It
- You've sure implied it.
- I mean scouring the whole lake
- [dramatic music stops]
wasting your resources,
only to find a mass-produced belt buckle?
Yeah, Björn,
that's what we call police work.
Right, I may not be on the force,
but it just strikes me
as a tad inefficient
to spend all that time
chasing such a lukewarm lead.
Why are you hung up
on making a case out of nothing?
Hm?
Why put yourself through all that?
[intriguing music playing]
Dragan Sergovicz
has gone off the grid.
I can't tell you where he is
because I don't know that, okay?
But what I do know is,
how it feels
when you're overwhelmed by life.
The pressure to succeed
when you're at work
Then you get to your house,
and the stress just mounts,
I've been there.
You feel pulled apart.
On top of that, you're a single mom.
LIKE A FISH IN WATER DAY CARE
What is that?
An acceptance letter
from a day care nearby.
Downstairs, in fact.
I put in a good word for you.
[chuckles]
[intriguing music stops]
You know I can't accept that, Björn.
Yes, you can, Nicole.
If you would just stop seeing
the bad in everything.
Come on.
Do me a favor and mull it over, at least.
[sighs]
[intriguing music resumes playing]
[exhaling]
[music fades]
[distant telephone ringing]
[moaning]
[cell phone ringing]
Hello, Katharina.
[Katharina] Hi, Björn. How's it going?
Oh, ya know, good.
I'm getting my new office set up.
How are you?
Mmm [chuckles]
I got the job.
- No way! [chuckling] Really?
- Yeah.
- That's amazing! I'm so happy for you.
- Thanks!
But I thought we should talk
because they want me to start next week.
They said that they knew
it was kind of a big ask,
uh, but they need me to come
for some onboarding.
Sure, yeah, that all makes sense.
It means we've gotta start
kindergarten next week.
Yeah, well, we have the spot.
She'll need a parent there to start.
Ah Oh, yeah, okay.
I guess I can make it work.
Wait, for real?
Sure. I think next week
should be pretty quiet on my end.
Okay, cool. [chuckles] Wow.
[intriguing music playing]
[Björn] Katharina wasn't wrong.
Thanks to the magic of single-tasking,
I'd knocked out all my personal issues
and general housekeeping tasks.
Unfortunately, I now had to deal
with my professional problems,
which were matters of life and death.
It was time to face the music.
[whirring sound]
DEATH
[cell phone ringing]
I'll be right down.
[Toni] You'll be sorry!
- I'll kill you all! [grunts]
- [gentle rock music playing]
Fuck you, lawyer! You're a shithead!
- [electrical zapping]
- [Toni groans and sputters]
I contacted Plura
at the incineration plant.
He's waiting for you. Okay?
[Toni groans and gasps]
[gentle rock music fades]
[Toni] Fuck off.

- [Sascha] Stanni!
- You piece of [fading groans]
- [intriguing music playing]
[Stanislav] Okay, pal.
- Sweet dreams.
- [Toni moans faintly]
[Toni stops moaning]
[Carla] All right.
- Lift him up.
- He's heavy. Okay.
Come on.
Shit. It won't stay.
- [Walter] Well, think of something.
- No chance.
- Boris made himself damn clear.
- What if we tack it?
- [Sascha] Mm-mm.
- I wish we had a big needle.
Apple in his mouth,
then a knitting needle through one cheek,
through the apple, and then out the other.
Hang on a sec.
Hold it tight.
Okay, do you have him? There.
- That's okay, right?
- [tape ripping]
Perfect.
[intriguing music continues]
[chuckling]
- [Walter] Get ready, guys.
- Yeah.
We're close now.
[intriguing music stops]
[breathing deeply]
[mysterious music playing]
Boris.
Good to see you.
Dragan sends his warm regards.
And he apologizes that things
have gotten so out of hand here.
[mysterious music stops]
What's with the phone?
You want me to call Dragan with that?
What kind of man won't meet face-to-face?
Must have lost his balls.
[men chuckling]
No, I feel like you'll want to see this.
[Malte] The plan was to go
blow up Dragan, Igor, and
- that big fella over there.
- [intriguing music playing]
It was supposed to get pinned on Boris.
Toni'd take the crown,
and Murat his number two.
But then that fucking school bus
screwed it all up.
So it's Toni.
Where is the man from video?
He should be here.
Well, Toni kicked him to death,
so he's indisposed.
- [speaking Russian]
- [Boris] Hmm.
[Toni groaning]
[Boris] Dragan has killed my number two,
and in return, he brings me his.
That's fair, huh?
- [speaks Russian]
- [Boris] Yeah.
Uh-huh.
Good job, guys.
Vladimir.
[intriguing music continues]
Take his pants off.
Uh Um, so
So, does this mean we're still
Well, yeah.
When I say something,
I follow through, lawyer.
But who's gonna pull out the pins? I mean
Don't worry,
I've got a backup in place. You see?
- Ah.
- [Boris] Vladimir.
Get this fucker out of my sight.
[intriguing music continues]
[Vladimir speaks Russian]
[Boris chuckles]
[Boris speaks Russian]
[groans faintly]
[Vladimir speaks Russian]
- [grunts]
- [clears throat] Um
Anyone want to say a few words?
Maybe close our eyes or Oh.
[Boris] What?
[intriguing music stops]
[Boris chuckles]
[inhaling]
[exhales deeply]
[distant dog barking]
That was Toni. [chuckles faintly]
[faint tense music playing]
[humming sound]
[humming gets louder]
[quiet dramatic music playing]
[Björn] Damn, it's a drone!
Vladimir, shoot it down.
POLICE
[Boris] It's a goddamn police drone!
- Bastards!
- Were we filmed?
- [man] We're so fucked.
- [overlapping chatter]
[Boris grunting]
That won't do anything!
I'm sure they saved the footage
on some server.
[man] Are we going? We staying?
The fuck we doing?
[Boris groans]
We can't just hang around here
waiting to get arrested.
- Let's roll out! Now!
- [Walter] He's right.
Hurry up, man.
Hey! Wait a sec!
Let's think this through.
If the police recorded everything,
they have proof
that Boris blew up Toni just now, yes?
Boris, you need to go
into hiding for a while.
And where should I go?
[indistinct, faint chatter]
- You wanted to see Dragan.
- Mm.
His hideout is super secure.
We'll go to him.
[intriguing music continues]
Okay.
Okay, lawyer, you'll bring me to Dragan.
We'll take my car, though.
The rest of you should scram.
Give him the keys.
- [Carla] Lawyer!
- [car engines start]
Will the big man be okay with this?
It's Boris, after all.
Dragan is on board.
[Sascha] Come on!
- Hurry, let's go!
- [Carla] Come on!
[Sascha] Go!
- [car door shuts]
- [car engines start]
[intriguing music continues]
What's that for?
There may not be leg room,
but it's for the best.
Nobody can know Dragan's location.
It's for his safety.
And for yours too.
Boris, I'm afraid you'll have to do this.
The cops are coming.
It's the trunk or a jail cell.
- [Boris grunts]
- [gentle rock music playing]
[Boris] Okay, lawyer.
You bring me straight to Dragan,
you understand?
Yeah. You'll see Dragan soon.
[music fades]
[electric door latch engages]
[water splashing gently]
[Joschka] The point of mindfulness
is to focus on what really matters.
[whirring sound]
It's about living life
with your eyes fully open.
[meditative music playing]
Now, there are times
you'll need to take a break
to rest and recharge.
It's important you recognize these times
as they arise, and slow down.
When we return to life refreshed,
we may seem awakened.
- Don't resist these changes.
- [contemplative music playing]
All you have to do is breathe in.
Let your life flow on.
- [whirring sound]
- [music stops]
- [breathing deeply]
- [distant chatter]
- Papa, what are we breathing for?
- Didn't it help?
- Mm-mm.
- [Björn chuckles]
- Oh! Hey, you. Mornin', boss.
- [child growls playfully]
- Mm.
- [children chattering]
So, whaddaya say? Shall we?
- [Emily] Mm-hm.
- Good.
[Emily] Mm-hm.
[grunts] Man, you're heavy.
[Emily giggles]
- [Sascha] So, where are we going?
- [Emily] Hyah! Faster, horsey! Giddy up!
[Sascha] Faster? Where to?
- [Emily] That way!
- [Sascha] This way?
- Higher?
- [Emily] Mm-hm.
- [child giggling]
- [Nicole, making funny noises] Bye!
- [child continues giggling]
- [Nicole chuckling] Whoa!
Bye, sweetheart.
- Bye.
- [child grunts]
Wanna say bye?
[children giggling]
[Björn] Still take it black?
Yes, I do.
Thank you.
I owe you an apology.
I guess I did go too far.
I'm sorry I involved Emily.
[contemplative music playing]
It's all good.
[chuckles faintly]
We're still searching for Dragan though.
Yeah, I know.
Mm-hm. [clears throat]
So, hey, you remember my colleague,
um, Möller, don't you?
Uh yeah.
He died in a freak car accident.
- While working?
- Oh, no, in Poland.
Oh. So awful.
[Nicole] The whole thing
was really weird. Um
It was, mm, right by
his common law wife's parents' house.
Weird, right?
I think he must've gone
to ask for Agnieszka's hand.
[sucks air in teeth]
Hmm. More tragic than weird, I'd say.
Yeah.
The weirder part is, um
Well, it seems when we searched his phone,
the last number he called belongs to Toni.
[breathing deeply]
Nicole.
Don't start this again.
Well, that was just a gut feeling.
[exhales deeply] Nicole.
When you're taking your son to day care,

- Okay? Do me a favor.
- Mm-hm.
Set work aside.
When you're at day care, just breathe
and focus on your son,
leave the search at home.
What's with the philosophy?
It's just mindfulness.
Mindfulness means focusing on this moment.
- Hmm.
- All right.
Shall we practice?
What?
[woman] That's enough. Over here.
Oh, yeah, I mean, I am
taking my kid to day care.
Nice work.
